FAA investigating Rockies charter flight for unauthorized personnel in cockpit, airline 'deeply disturbed'

Video surfaced on social media that shows a rockies coach in the cockpit 'at cruise altitude'.

colorado-rockies-getty.png

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and United Airlines have opened an investigation after a video surfaced on social media showing unauthorized personnel in the cockpit during a flight chartered by the Colorado Rockies to Toronto, according to CNN .

"We're deeply disturbed by what we see in that video, which appears to show an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged," United Airlines told CNN in a statement. United also confirmed that they've reported the incident to the FAA. Both pilots have been sidelined.

"The FAA is investigating this event," a spokesperson told Denver's KDVR FOX affiliate . "Federal regulations restrict flight deck access to specific individuals. We do not comment on the details of open investigations."

A video originally posted from hitting coach   Hensley Meulens' Instagram that appears to match the description provided by United Airlines has since been shared on social media. CBS Sports has been unable to confirm its authenticity, but it shows Meulens in the pilot seat, next to one of the pilots and with the flight in the air. Later, another individual makes their way into the flight deck. The caption on the since-deleted Instagram post reads: "Had some fun in the cockpit on our flight from Denver to Toronto. Thanks to the captain and the first officer of our United charter that allowed me this great experience."

"[Meulens], he apologized," Rockies manager Bud Black told MLB.com . "I can't comment any further because there's what's being called an investigation of the matter. As far as Bam Bam goes, he apologized to the Rockies organization, to United and to the team."

It's perhaps notable that the violation took place just weeks after the FAA announced it would increase its oversight of United Airlines' compliance with safety regulations . One must reason that this is not the kind of activity that will help reduced the FAA's scrutiny of United's operations.

The Rockies have opened this season with a 4-15 mark, placing them in last place in the National League West.

U.S. FAA to probe baseball coach in cockpit during a flight from Denver to Toronto

L OS ANGELES — Authorities in the United States are investigating after a video surfaced on social media of a hitting coach for the Colorado Rockies sitting in the cockpit of an aircraft "at cruise altitude," while bound for Toronto.

A statement from the Federal Aviation Administration says an investigation is underway but it will not comment further while the process is ongoing.

The comments come after a post on social media platform X showed a video allegedly taken from the Instagram account of Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens, showing a man who appears to be Meulens sitting in the pilot's seat on an active flight.

The Instagram post, which has been taken down, included a caption that said "the captain and the first officer" of a United Airlines charter flight allowed the poster to sit in the cockpit during the Denver-to-Toronto flight.

In a statement, United Airlines confirmed the video appears to be taken from an April 10 charter flight from Denver to Toronto and may have shown "an unauthorized person in the flight deck at cruise altitude while the autopilot was engaged."

The airline also says it is "disturbed" by the content of the video and has taken the pilots who were allegedly involved out of service.

"As a clear violation of our safety and operational policies, we’ve reported the incident to the FAA and have withheld the pilots from service while we conduct an investigation," United says.

The Rockies were in Toronto to play the Blue Jays in a three-game series between April 12 and April 14.

The Major League Baseball team did not immediately return a request for comment.

U.S. regulations say no one can be admitted to the flight deck of an aircraft unless the person is a crew member, an authorized inspector, a certified individual advantageous for safe operations or someone who has the pilot's permission in emergencies "in the interest of safety."

This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 19, 2024.

Former WSU guard Jabe Mullins announces commitment to Montana State

PULLMAN – Former Washington State guard Jabe Mullins is on the move again.

Mullins has committed to Montana State, he posted on social media Friday, heading to the third school of his career. He played his first two seasons at Saint Mary’s.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jabe Mullins (@jabemullins_)

Mullins, a Snoqualmie, Washington, native, averaged 1.6 points in 9.2 minutes last season, taking a lesser role as WSU broke its 16-year NCAA Tournament drought. After starting eight of 30 games as a junior, Mullins saw limited action as a senior, playing his most minutes in Pac-12 with a 17-minute outing in Washington State’s win over USC on Jan. 10.

At Saint Mary’s, where he played the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, Mullins started 11 of 53 games, all of his starts coming as a freshman.

Mullins, who entered the transfer portal in late March, is the fifth former Cougar to find a new home this offseason. Guard Myles Rice landed at Indiana, center Rueben Chinyelu transferred to Florida, fellow center Oscar Cluff moved on to South Dakota State and guard Dylan Darling transferred to Idaho State.

That leaves six Cougs in the portal: senior wing Andrej Jakimovski, senior guard Joseph Yesufu, sophomore wing Kymany Houinsou, forward AJ Rohosy, walk-on forward AJ LeBeau and sophomore forward Spencer Mahoney, who entered the portal on Thursday.

Holdovers from last season still on the roster are rising sophomore guards Isaiah Watts and Parker Gerrits, plus rising senior wing Jaylen Wells, who has until May 29 to decide whether to stay in the NBA draft pool or return to school.

This week, WSU also secured two commitments from new coach David Riley’s former squad at Eastern Washington: center Ethan Price and wing LeJuan Watts.

Bowker credits coach for career day as Haddon Heights cruises past Haddonfield

Austin Bowker had the best day at the plate of his high school career Friday.

In the end, all he wanted to do was give a shout out to his hitting coach, Erik Christensen.

“It’s been coaching,” the senior first baseman said. “Big shout out to the hitting coach for keeping it real with me. He’s been working with me; helped me gain my confidence.

“Last year, I was all over the place.”

Baseball: Haddon Heights vs. Haddonfield, April 19, 2024

Unfortunately, Christensen missed the game against rival Haddonfield. But he was certainly there in spirit.

Bowker went 3-for-4, including a two-run home run, and collected a career-high five RBIs as Haddon Heights pushed eight runs across in second inning en route to a 10-3 Colonial Liberty victory.

“I’ve had a few good games, but this was my best,” said Bowker, who also delivered a two-run single in the second and added an RBI single in the sixth. “I’m real confident at the plate this year. My hitting coach has been helping me all the way through.

“Last year, I was real jumpy. Now I’m real simple at the plate; keeping it nice and clean, staying calm.”

Drew Costello picked up the decision, striking out four in six innings of work. The senior left-hander headed to West Chester faced the minimum 14 batters after allowing a one-out single in the first before surrendering a walk to lead off the sixth. Working the seventh, Drew Harris struck out the side in order to secure the victory.

“I was just finding my fastball and they couldn’t really hit my curveball,” Costello said. “I was hitting my spots and felt good out there.

“We showed who we are today.”

Haddon Heights (6-2) bounced back from a loss to Gloucester on Thursday, a 5-1 defeat in which the Garnets seemingly hit everything right at someone. In defeating Haddonfield (3-2), they sprayed the ball around, finishing with nine hits.

“We looked at today as a new opportunity to take care of business,” Haddon Heights coach Eric Newell said. “That’s the beauty of baseball. There’s always another to look forward to.”

Bowker put the visitors in front after Cameron Simon led off the second with a walk. His blast to left field was the first of the season and second in his varsity career. The first came last season against Gateway.

“He’s one of the hardest working kids I’ve ever coached; one of the best teammates I’ve ever coached,” Newell said. “He’s always helping out, always looking for something to do. You don’t have to tell him to get on something. He approaches the game that way, too.

“He deserves all the good things that are coming for him because he does all the right things. He’s hit into a lot of tough luck; barreled a lot of balls at people. But his quality at-bats are really good, and he’s a phenomenal first baseman. He does everything.”

Jake Griess and Kevin Clark added two hits apiece for the winners, with Griess also picking up a pair of RBIs. Harris added an RBI double, with Jaxon Motta scoring two runs.

Haddonfeld put its runs on the board in the sixth, with Julian Butler-Galliera connecting for an RBI single and Joey Tedeschi adding a two-run single. Three of the team’s four hits came in the frame.

“Every time we play them, we’re just so hyped,” Bowker said. “Today we were really aggressive, got on them early.”

High school sports | cousino cruises in run-rule win over warren woods tower.

Baseball players

The Cousino Patriots smacked 10 base hits – including two extra base hits – on Thursday as they defeated the Warren Woods Tower Titans 11-1 in five innings for their first MAC Gold win of the season.

Starting pitcher J’Von Mason struck out two Titans in the top of the first, and the Patriots smacked three singles in five at bats, scoring two runs before the inning was over. Mason hit an RBI single and proceeded to steal second and third on his first at bat.

It was just the start of what ended up being a strong day for the senior. He threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. He threw 44 of his 69 pitches for strikes.

Along with his first inning RBI single, he also walked twice, reaching in all of his plate appearances.

“As a senior, you know, (I’m) being a good teammate, doing my job,” Mason said. “Getting some runs in, being out there on the mound, stealing bases and scoring. It’s a good thing.”

Cousino head coach Kyle Gleason had high praise for the senior, who plays outfield when he’s not on the mound.

“J’Von is a total team player,” Gleason said. “Whether it’s pitching, playing in the outfield, (I’m) really proud of the steps he’s taken this year to get better. He really came out and swung it today. To have an athlete like that on the basepaths definitely gives us an advantage.”

Baseball player

The lone run against Mason came in the top of the third inning, when back-to-back singles by Kevin Legato and Derek Akins allowed Arjay Zimmerman to drive in a run. But two failed stolen base attempts against catcher Blake Johnson and one groundout later, and the threat was over.

It was all Cousino from there. A triple by Parker Wiezcorek, a Miles Moody double, and Bradyn Brubaker and AJ Trost singles drove in runs along with a bases loaded walk and a handful of passed balls and an error. Eight different Patriots recorded hits, every starter reached base and they stole six total bases.

“We had little mental lapses in the field sometimes,” said WWT head coach Jose Jimenez. “Not knowing what to do with the ball or where to go. Basically, that was it. Once we do that, then it starts getting ugly sometimes. And we got a young team, so we’re going to get young mistakes. It’s one of those years going in, a majority of my lineup is sophomores.”

Jimenez added that he felt as though one mistake rolled into two and beyond to the point where the game became out of reach.

Derek Akins got the first 10 outs for Tower, but was pulled after losing his command in the fourth inning. Daniel Staniszewski spelled him and got the next two outs, and Foley Kedzior pitched the fifth until Cousino reached 11 runs, triggering the mercy rule. Altogether, WWT combined to walk seven batters and threw six wild pitches.

And because of rainouts, the Titans are scheduled to play seven games in seven days between Thursday, April 18 and Thursday, April 25.

“We probably won’t have a practice until probably sometime next week,” Jimenez said. “Then we’ve got a list of things we need to work on. And we’ve worked on these things in the past and during the offseason, but until they see it in a game, they tend to forget.”

Cousino, now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MAC Gold, ended a two-game losing streak which included a nine-run loss to conference rival Lamphere.

They feel confident that, if they can continue to get strong performances like they did on Thursday, they can achieve their goal of winning the competitive Gold.

“We got to continue having great pitching performances like we did from J’Von tonight,” Gleason said. “Defense, we’re a young group, but continuing to limit those errors and mistakes and continuing to get better at the plate every single day (is necessary).”
