Come Visit Or Come And Visit: Which Is Correct?

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re trying to find the answer to this question, and you’re not alone. Many people struggle with choosing the right phrasing when it comes to this expression. But don’t worry, I’m here to help.

I know just how important it is to use the right language to effectively communicate your message. That’s why in this article, we’ll explore the nuances of ‘Come Visit’ and ‘Come And Visit,’ and help you choose the right one for your specific situation.

We’ll also examine their usage in everyday conversation, and provide examples of each to help you understand the difference.

So whether you’re a writer, marketer, or simply someone looking to improve your language skills, this article has something for you. So let’s get into it.

Which Is Grammatically Correct, And Why?

One of the questions that frequently comes up is whether it’s grammatically correct to say ‘come visit’ or ‘come and visit’. So, which is correct and why?

The short answer is that ‘come and visit’ is grammatically correct. The reason for this is that ‘and’ is a coordinating conjunction that is used to join two independent clauses

In this case, ‘come’ and ‘visit’ are both independent clauses and ‘and’ is necessary to join them together.

On the other hand, ‘come visit’ is technically a sentence fragment. While it’s commonly used in conversation and informal writing, it’s not considered proper grammar.

In formal writing, it’s important to use the full form ‘come and visit’.

It’s worth noting that this is a relatively minor issue, and most people won’t even notice if you use ‘come visit’ instead of ‘come and visit’.

However, if you want to ensure that your writing is grammatically correct and polished, it’s best to err on the side of caution and use the full form.

For example, in some dialects or regional variations of English, it’s common to drop the ‘and’ in phrases like ‘come visit’. Additionally, in poetry or creative writing, there’s often more leeway with grammar and syntax.

In summary, ‘come and visit’ is the grammatically correct form of the phrase, and should be used in formal writing or when you want to ensure that your writing is polished.

However, there are exceptions to this rule, and in some dialects or creative contexts, ‘come visit’ may be acceptable.

Why Is Come And Visit Us Used?

Have you ever seen a sign or an advertisement that says ‘Come and visit us’? Maybe you’ve heard a friend or a family member use that phrase when inviting you over to their house. But have you ever wondered why we use this particular phrase?

First and foremost, the phrase ‘Come and visit us’ is a friendly and inviting way to ask someone to spend time with you.

Whether it’s a business inviting potential customers to check out their products or services, or a friend inviting someone over for dinner, ‘Come and visit us’ is a warm and welcoming way to extend an invitation.

Another reason why ‘Come and visit us’ is used is that it can help create a sense of community and belonging.

When a business or organization invites people to visit them, they’re inviting people to become a part of their community and to experience what they have to offer.

Similarly, when a friend invites someone to their home, they’re inviting them to be a part of their personal community and to share in their life experiences.

In conclusion, the phrase ‘Come and visit us’ is used because it’s a warm and welcoming way to invite someone to spend time with you.

It has its roots in Middle English and Latin, and it can help create a sense of community and belonging.

So, the next time you see a sign or hear someone say ‘Come and visit us,’ remember that it’s more than just an invitation – it’s an invitation to connect and build relationships.

Why Is Come Visit Us Used?

‘Come visit us’ is a phrase that has been used for decades, and for good reason. It is a simple, yet effective way to encourage people to physically visit a location, whether it be a store, restaurant, or any other type of business.

One of the main reasons why ‘come visit us’ is such a popular phrase is because it appeals to our human need for connection.

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the world around us. We spend so much time on our phones and computers that we forget about the importance of face-to-face interactions.

By inviting people to come visit a physical location, businesses are able to create a sense of community and connection that is hard to replicate online.

Of course, the effectiveness of ‘come visit us’ as a call-to-action also depends on how it is used. It’s important for businesses to be creative and come up with unique ways to use this phrase in their marketing efforts.

For example, a restaurant may use ‘come visit us for our daily specials’ or ‘come visit us to try our new menu items’.

By incorporating specific details, businesses can make this phrase more compelling and increase the chances of people actually visiting.

How Is Come And Visit Us Used In A Sentence?

‘Come and visit us’ is a commonly used phrase that can be used in a variety of contexts. From personal invitations to business advertisements, this phrase has become a staple in our everyday language.

Here, we’ll take a closer look at how ‘come and visit us’ is used in a sentence and explore some of the different ways this phrase can be incorporated into your everyday communication.

Let’s start with the basics. The phrase ‘Come and visit us’ is often used to convey a sense of urgency or enthusiasm in an invitation.

By using the conjunction ‘and,’ we emphasize the invitation and make it sound more welcoming and informal.

For example, if you’re inviting a friend to come over to your house, you might say ‘Come and visit us!.’

The use of ‘and’ here conveys a sense of excitement and enthusiasm, which makes your friend feel more welcome and appreciated.

  • Personal Invitation: ‘Hey, why don’t you come and visit us next weekend? We’d love to have you over for dinner.’

Come Visit Or Come And Visit

Another common usage of ‘Come and visit us’ is in a business or commercial setting. Companies often use this phrase in their advertising campaigns to encourage customers to visit their store, office, or website.

The use of ‘and’ here conveys a sense of urgency and importance, which makes the invitation sound more compelling.

For instance, a store might say ‘Come and visit us for our end-of-season sale!’ or a website might say ‘Come and visit us for the latest deals and discounts!’

The use of ‘and’ in both these examples adds emphasis and encourages the customer to take action.

  • Business Advertisement: ‘Come and visit us at our new location and see our latest products in person!’

Come Visit Or Come And Visit

Finally, ‘come and visit us’ can be used to create a sense of community and belonging.

Whether you’re inviting someone to your home or encouraging them to check out your business, this phrase communicates a sense of openness and inclusivity.

It invites people to become a part of your community and to share in your experiences. Here’s an example:

  • Creating Community: ‘We’re having a neighborhood block party next weekend. Come and visit us and get to know your neighbors!’

Overall, the phrase ‘Come and visit us’ is a versatile and effective way to invite someone to visit you, whether in a personal or professional setting.

The use of ‘and’ adds emphasis, urgency, and warmth to the invitation, making it sound more genuine and appealing.

How Is Come Visit Us Used In A Sentence?

Let’s take a closer look at the usage of ‘Come visit us.’ Unlike ‘Come and visit us,’ the phrase ‘Come visit us’ does not use the conjunction ‘and,’ which makes it sound more direct and straightforward.

The phrase ‘Come visit us’ is commonly used when the invitation is more formal or professional in nature.

For example, if you’re inviting a colleague or business partner to your office, you might say ‘Please come visit us at our headquarters.’

The use of ‘Come visit us’ in this context conveys a sense of professionalism and formality, which is appropriate for a business setting.

In addition to being used in a professional setting, ‘Come visit us’ can also be used in a personal setting to invite friends or family to visit.

For example, if you’re inviting a friend to your home, you might say ‘Come visit us this weekend.’ The use of ‘Come visit us’ in this context conveys a sense of warmth and hospitality, which is appropriate for a personal invitation.

Another common usage of ‘Come visit us’ is in the context of travel and tourism. Cities and countries often use this phrase to invite tourists to visit their destination.

For example, a tourism board might say ‘Come visit us in sunny California!’ The use of ‘Come visit us’ in this context conveys a sense of excitement and invitation, which is appropriate for attracting tourists.

  • Tourist Attraction: “If you’re ever in town, be sure to come and visit us at the local museum. We have some amazing exhibits on display.”

Overall, the key to using ‘Come visit us’ in a sentence is to keep it simple, direct, and inviting.

Whether you’re using it in a personal or business context, this phrase is an effective way to communicate your desire to spend time with others and build relationships.

So, the next time you’re extending an invitation, consider using ‘Come visit us’ as a warm and welcoming way to invite others into your life.

The answer to the question ‘Come Visit’ or ‘Come and Visit’: Which is correct?’ is that both are acceptable and commonly used in different contexts.

‘Come visit’ is a more casual and friendly invitation, often used among friends and family. It can also be used in marketing or advertising to create a sense of personal connection with the audience.

‘Come and visit,’ on the other hand, is a more formal invitation, often used in professional or business settings. It can also be used to emphasize the importance of the invitation or to convey a sense of urgency.

Ultimately, the choice between ‘come visit’ and ‘come and visit’ depends on the context and the tone you want to convey.

Both are grammatically correct, and the important thing is to use the one that feels most appropriate for the situation.

So, next time you’re inviting someone to come over, consider your relationship with them and the context of the invitation.

Whether you choose ‘come visit’ or ‘come and visit,’ make sure to do so with a friendly and inviting tone that will make your guests feel welcome and appreciated.

Hi, native speakers of English! I'm writing a notice advertising a course. The idea is to pin it to noticeboards around the university campus. After explaining briefly what the course is about, I'd like to finish the notice with the following sentence: If you are interested in [topic of the course] , COME AND VISIT US! My doubt is with "come" and the following verb. Should I write "come and visit us", "come to visit us", or "come visit us"? Somehow I guess the three of them are possible, but I would like to check with you because probably all of them are not equally suitable (remember this is a notice about a course for university students). Thank you in advance.

'Come and visit us' is my preference. 'Come to visit us' would also be OK but I think that 'Come visit us' is too informal.

Hullo LB. Well, first of all I wouldn't use the verb visit ~ that sounds (to me, anyway) too much like you'll be serving sherry and canapés. I'd expect to see on this kind of notice COME AND TALK TO US , without the ! . NB: This is British English. I'm not sure how such a notice would read in the USA, maybe COME TALK WITH US . As far as I know come and + bare infinitive is predominantly BE; AE is more likely to use come + bare infinitive.

Hello, Li'l Bull. Ewie's "Come and talk to us" sounds good to me. Your "Come and visit us" also sounds good. Both sound casual, friendly, and inviting. Both versions would sound as good to me if you omitted "and", but "and" sure doesn't strike me as odd.

I eat my words, Mr O. A question for you: Does Come talk to us sound more informal to you than Come and talk to us ? As Bev said above, it sounds too informal in BE.

「come over」と「come」の違いも解説します。

Why don't you come over for dinner tonight?

My friends are coming over tomorrow morning. So, I have to clean up the room.

My family is coming over from Japan.

「come over to...」

「come over」に前置詞 「to」 を付けて使うと、 「... 例えば、「come here」と「come over here」と言った場合、「come over here」の方が「遠くからこちらに来なさい」という意味合いになります。 ちなみに「here」は「ここへ」という意味の副詞なので、「come to here」ではなく「come here」になります。

Then come over to my house and we will talk about it.

Hey everyone! Come over here!

Could you please come over to my office?

「come over+形容詞」 で 「突然...

After eating ten hamburgers, I just came over all dizzy.

I came over sick when I saw my ex again.

come over visit

「What has come over you?」

  • What has gotten into you?
  • What has happened to you?
  • What is wrong with you?
  • What is up?

What has come over you?

When I remembered it, anger came over me.

I watched her interview and felt she came over very polite.

Blinken to Return to Israel to Discuss Hostages and Planned Rafah Incursion

The visit next week will come as talks on a cease-fire deal have stalled and tensions have risen over the treatment of civilians in the war.

A young person walks on a pile of rubble below a floor of exposed furniture sitting in a destroyed house.

By Patrick Kingsley ,  Peter Baker and Euan Ward

Patrick Kingsley reported from Jerusalem, Peter Baker from Washington and Euan Ward from Beirut, Lebanon.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken will visit Israel next week, an Israeli official said on Friday, as talks on a cease-fire deal have stalled and tensions have risen between Israel and the United States over the treatment of civilians in the war.

The Israeli official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said talks with Mr. Blinken would center on the remaining hostages held in Gaza and an impending Israeli military operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Mr. Blinken last visited Israel in March, when he warned that its plans to invade Rafah , where more than a million displaced Palestinians are sheltering, would pose severe risks to the population. Since then, the Biden administration has continued to raise concerns about the planned incursion, saying it should not be carried out without a credible plan to protect civilians.

But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has vowed to press ahead with the invasion, saying it is necessary to eliminate Hamas battalions in the city.

Mr. Blinken’s visit would come as international mediators have failed to broker a temporary cease-fire that would give Palestinians some respite from Israel’s bombardment and allow for the release of hostages abducted in the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

The United States has proposed a deal through Egyptian and Qatari intermediaries in which Hamas would release 40 of the most vulnerable hostages in exchange for a six-week truce and the release of hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

A senior Biden administration official who briefed reporters on Thursday on the condition of anonymity under official ground rules blamed Hamas solely for blocking the deal. The official said that while Israel had signaled it would accept those terms, the response from Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader hiding underground in Gaza, had been “totally nonconstructive.”

Hamas has since signaled that it was not completely rejecting the deal and was willing to return to talks again, the official said, adding that the United States and its partners would test that signaling in coming days.

With more than 34,000 people killed in Gaza amid Israeli strikes, according to the Gazan Health Ministry, Palestinians in the territory were contending with yet another misery this week — a blast of extreme heat that pushed temperatures above 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Thursday.

The heat, combined with a lack of clean water, has made life unbearable in the tents that many Gazans are using for shelter and has intensified worries about the spread of diseases.

“My children were stung by insects and mosquitoes because there is no sanitation around, and sewage is leaking almost everywhere,” said Mohammed Abu Hatab, a father of four, including a 7-month-old child, who added that it was so hot that he had to dress his children only in their underwear.

“The tent, the heat wave and the horror of this war are all a nightmare,” Mr. Abu Hatab, 33, said. “How can my children live healthily and safely?”

In an effort to bring more food, water and medicine into Gaza, U.S. Army engineers on Thursday began constructing a floating pier and causeway off the territory’s coast, Defense Department officials said. The maritime project is expected to be completed early next month.

But aid workers say, and defense officials have acknowledged, that shipments by sea are not an adequate substitute for land convoys, which are much more efficient. Such convoys fell sharply when the war began and have only partly recovered . The World Food Program said this week that a famine in Gaza could begin in six weeks.

While Israel remains determined to eliminate Hamas in Gaza, its military is also battling Hezbollah , Iran’s most powerful regional proxy , in a conflict that has caused a growing number of civilian casualties on both sides of the Israeli-Lebanese border.

On Friday, the Israeli military said that an Israeli man was killed while carrying out “infrastructure work” on Thursday, when two anti-tank missiles from Lebanon struck the area of Har Dov in northern Israel. Also known as Shebaa Farms, the area is claimed by Lebanon but occupied by Israel, and it has long been a crucible for violence.

Hezbollah described the overnight attack as an “ambush” and claimed that two vehicles had been destroyed in a combined missile, artillery and rocket assault on an Israeli military base in the area. The Israeli military’s statement did not say whether a base had been hit.

Israeli forces responded by striking Hezbollah targets across southern Lebanon, among them a weapon storage center and military compound, according to the military. Lebanese state media reported on Friday that several towns had been targeted by heavy Israeli bombardment, damaging dozens of houses. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The fighting between Hezbollah and Israel, the heaviest between the two sides in nearly two decades, has shown no sign of subsiding.

In Israel, 19 soldiers and civilians have been killed in the recent violence, which began after Hezbollah launched rockets into northern Israel in support of the Oct. 7 attack led by Hamas, also supported by Iran. Since the assault, more than 70 civilians have been killed in Lebanon, along with about 270 Hezbollah fighters, the group has said, a figure that exceeds its losses in a 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Joe Biden is in Tampa today. Here’s what you need to know.

  • Kirby Wilson Times staff

President Joe Biden is making a campaign stop in Tampa this afternoon, where he plans to emphasize his support for abortion rights.

It will be the first official stop for the Biden campaign in the Tampa Bay area during the 2024 election season, and it comes as his campaign looks to make the case that an increasingly conservative Florida is still winnable for Democrats.

Here’s what you need to know about Biden’s appearance.

Where and when is the event?

Biden will speak about abortion rights at Hillsborough Community College’s Dale Mabry campus in Tampa, according to an event invite circulated to supporters of the president. Attendees have been asked to arrive between noon and 2 p.m., per the invitation.

Why Florida, and why now?

In a call with reporters Monday afternoon, Biden’s team emphasized that he plans to invest in Florida ahead of this November’s rematch against presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“With our enormous financial advantage, the Biden-Harris campaign can afford to invest in many paths to victory, and that includes Florida,” Biden spokesperson Michael Tyler said on the call.

At the same time that voters pick the next president, Floridians in November will decide on a ballot initiative that would enshrine abortion rights in the state Constitution. The Biden campaign is betting that abortion will prove to be a winning issue, highlighting the differences between Trump’s record on the issue and Biden’s.

For example, the Biden campaign is quick to note that Trump appointed three of the conservative U.S. Supreme Court justices who voted in 2022 to overturn federal abortion protections. As a result of that decision and the actions of Republican leaders, Florida is set to see a six-week abortion ban go into effect at the beginning of May.

“Trump will do everything he can to ban abortion nationwide,” Tyler said. “Whenever Trump has had power, he’s used it to take away rights from women.”

When asked about the Biden campaign’s criticisms, the Trump campaign said the president has made the country less safe for women.

“Joe Biden and the Democrats are radically out of touch with the majority of Americans in their support for abortion up until birth and even after birth and forcing taxpayers to fund it,” said Trump National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. (The Biden campaign has said it supports abortion until the point of fetal viability.)

Biden staffers are using Florida as an opportunity to talk about abortion as a national issue. The impending six-week abortion ban here will affect the entire southeast, Tyler noted on the call.

Will there be protesters?

Demonstrators who are against the United States’ support of Israel’s war on Hamas plan to make their voices heard today.

In an Instagram post last week, the Tampa Bay Area Dream Defenders called Biden “Genocide Joe,” writing, “The people of Tampa stand with Palestine and refuse to let this warmonger roam our streets!”

At least five other groups plan to have a presence as well: Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society, Tampa Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Freedom Road Socialist Organization, Young Lords Florida chapter and the Restorative Justice Coalition.

Several groups are planning to gather at the corner of Lois Avenue and Tampa Bay Boulevard at 1 p.m. today, according to a social media post.

Laura Rodriguez, an organizer with Tampa Bay Students for a Democratic Society, said Democrats need to replace Biden on the 2024 ballot.

“They need to pick a new candidate or suffer the consequences, Rodriguez said. “We’re done picking between the lesser of two evils.”

Grade the Trade: Rams give up a ton to Panthers to take DT Braden Fiske

The Rams gave up a lot to the Panthers to come up for Braden Fiske in the 2024 NFL Draft. Will it be worth it?

  • Author: Cory Kinnan

The Los Angeles Rams took Jared Verse in the first round and have now made another pick along their defensive line in the 2024 NFL Draft after trading up with the Carolina Panthers. Selecting Florida State's Braden Fiske, the Rams may have some questions to answer.

To move up 13 spots, the Rams gave up their fifth round pick this year, and a massive 2025 second round pick. This is quite a lopsided trade in favor of the Panthers who now add a top-64 pick next season.

Fiske is athletic and has a high ceiling, but he is also 24 years old and had a late breakout, transferring to the Seminoles from Western Michigan this past season. Can the Rams get he most out of him and make the haul they gave up to get him worth it?

Apple Sinks From First to Fifth Place in Chinese Smartphone Market

Analytics company Canalys has released its latest report on China's smartphone market for the first quarter of 2024, and Apple has come off worst among the top five brands jostling for supremacy in Asia's largest economy.

iphone 15 china

HONOR shipped 10.6 million units with a 16% share, a year-on-year increase of 9%, while vivo shipped 10.3 million units with a 15% share, a year-on-year decrease of 9%. Apple declined the most among the top five, sinking to fifth from first place, with 10 million units and a 15% share, which is a year-on-year decrease of 25%.

Huawei's performance is up 70% from a year earlier, when the company was still reorganizing its phone business following U.S. sanctions. Huawei's 5G Mate 60 Pro uses a China-made 7-nanometer processor tailored for the local market, showcasing the kind of advanced semiconductor manufacturing capabilities that US sanctions were originally designed to prevent.

Huawei has since released its new Pure line of flagship smartphones, and has been busy developing its own operating system, HarmonyOS, since it could not use Google's Android and Google Mobile Services. The continued expansion of the HarmonyOS ecosystem breaks the two-horse race of Android and iOS in Mainland China.

Apple is deepening its ties with China despite expanding production in Southeast Asia and India. Approximately 17% of Apple's net sales from October to December were derived from the greater China region, making it the largest regional supplier in the company's supply chain. But Apple is facing an uphill battle to reverse falling iPhone sales there, with a 24% year-on-year decline in 2023 projected to deepen through 2024.

How Trump could win at the Supreme Court even if his broad immunity argument is rejected

Donald Trump

WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump might be able to declare victory in his upcoming Supreme Court case on presidential immunity even if the justices reject his most extreme arguments.

At issue in the high-stakes showdown Thursday is whether Trump's criminal charges over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results should be dismissed based on a broad claim of immunity.

Even if the court rejects that bold argument, it could still send the case back to Washington-based U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan for more proceedings on whether some of Trump's actions are insulated from prosecution.

With the case, initially scheduled for trial in March, already plagued by delays, such a ruling would further imperil the chances of any trial being concluded before November's election.

"Trump’s first preference would be a ruling that he is immune, but a second preference would be a ruling that there is some kind of complicated factual test for immunity so it has to be remanded," said Richard Bernstein, a lawyer who filed a friend-of-the-court brief opposing Trump on behalf of former government officials .

In that scenario, "the case would get bogged down" on questions about to what extent each of the four counts in the indictment rest on official acts of the then-president, which might be protected, he added.

The case in Washington, separate from the ongoing criminal trial in New York, concerns Trump's involvement in a scheme to submit fake election certificates to Congress in the hope that it would nullify Joe Biden’s victory, a chain of events that led to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters.

Prosecutors led by special counsel Jack Smith say those acts constituted a series of crimes. Trump says he was merely expressing his concerns, which were not based on any evidence, that the election was plagued with fraud.

The four charges he faces are: conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy to violate the right to vote and have one's vote counted.

The question of whether the obstruction charge can be used to prosecute people involved in the Jan. 6 riot is the subject of another Supreme Court case argued last week .

The legal issues in the election interference case have sometimes served as a sideshow to the issue of timing, with Trump opponents hoping that a trial could take place before the election in the belief that a guilty verdict could affect the 2024 general election, in which Trump once again faces off against Biden.

Some legal commentators say Trump has in many ways already won by persuading the Supreme Court not to intervene in the case at an earlier stage , making it less likely that a trial can take place before the election even if the immunity claim is outright rejected. The court also dithered when deciding how to frame the legal question when it ultimately took up Trump's appeal.

The Supreme Court's handling of the case so far might suggest it will fall short of a sweeping ruling against Trump as some have predicted, legal experts say.

The court might think that there are some official duties that do merit immunity but leave it to a trial court to figure out how that applies to Trump's case, according to Randall Eliason, a former federal prosecutor who teaches at the George Washington University Law School.

"The reason they took the case is because they want to write something more nuanced that accepts there may be immunity in some circumstances," he added.

Smith has argued in court papers that Trump has no immunity and that the case should go immediately to trial.

But in his latest brief , Smith offered his views on what the court should do if it thinks that there is some form of immunity for official acts.

In that scenario, the trial should still go ahead, he argued, because the charges in the indictment also include "private conduct" that has nothing to do with Trump's official duties.

If there are concerns about actions that should be subject to immunity being used as evidence against Trump, the trial court could weigh whether that evidence should be excluded, Smith argued.

"The district court can make evidentiary rulings and craft appropriate jury instructions for trial clarifying that petitioner may be held criminally liable based only on the private conduct alleged in the indictment," Smith wrote.

The prosecution's theory of the case is that any use of official presidential power "was merely an additional means of achieving a private aim" — remaining in office after losing an election.

Smith cited, among other things, Trump's coordination with private lawyers in forming the scheme to submit false alternative election certifications to Congress in the hope that then-Vice President Mike Pence would refuse to certify Biden's victory.

Smith also argued that, at a minimum, some evidence arising from official duties could be used at trial in order to show Trump's "knowledge or notice of the falsity of his election-fraud claims."

Trump's own brief calls for sweeping immunity, seeking an extension of a 1982 Supreme Court ruling called Nixon v. Fitzgerald that said presidents cannot be sued for conduct within the "outer perimeter" of their official duties. That was a civil case and has never been applied in the criminal context.

The possibility of a remand is also addressed in Trump's brief, with his lawyers appearing to envisage a pretrial proceeding that would include detailed consideration of whether his conduct constituted protected official acts.

They cite an appeals court ruling that allowed civil claims to move ahead against Trump over his involvement in Jan. 6. That court rejected Trump's broad immunity argument but said he could raise the issue again later in the litigation.

Trump could also seek to appeal any adverse ruling in a pretrial proceeding, although, depending on how the process works, he might have to wait until after trial.

Opinions vary on how much more time, from days to weeks, additional litigation on immunity could add before a trial commences.

"How much delay that causes is a real open question," said Matthew Seligman, another lawyer who filed a brief backing prosecutors.

Chutkan, who put the case on hold while Trump appealed the immunity issue, has previously indicated that a trial could start three months after she gets the case back following a Supreme Court ruling.

If that ruling comes at the end of June, when the Supreme Court typically issues decisions in its most consequential cases before breaking for the summer, that would lead to a trial starting no earlier than the end of September. The trial could last up to 12 weeks.

A trial before the election is "still theoretically possible," Eliason said, but "the window is closing."
