Highlights of Carnival Cruise Line’s Itinerary and Program for 2024

Carnival Cruise Line has big plans for 2024, including a new ship entering service and several deployment changes.

As the line announces more information about its itineraries for the next year, CruiseBooking.com News examines the highlights.

Carnival Firenze debuted on the West Coast

In line with Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Fun Italian Style concept, the Costa Firenze will transfer from Costa Cruises to Carnival Cruise Line .

Starting in spring 2024, the 2021-built vessel will be renamed Carnival Firenze and offer year-round Mexican Riviera cruises from Long Beach.

European Itineraries to be Expanded on Carnival Legend

A summer program on the Carnival Legend will be offered in 2024 as part of Carnival Cruise Line’s expansion into Europe.

This 2,200-guest vessel will sail 17 cruises between April and October in the Mediterranean, the Greek Islands, West Europe, the British Isles, and Iceland.

Ports of call for Carnival Glory and Carnival Liberty

May 2024 will mark the swap of homeports for the Carnival Liberty and Carnival Glory. A short cruise service out of Port Canaveral will be taken over by the Glory since it sails from New Orleans since 2019.

A seven-night itinerary to the Bahamas will be offered by Carnival Liberty from New Orleans.

The Carnival Panorama tour of Asia

Two transpacific itineraries will be offered by Carnival Panorama in 2024. California, Japan, Southeast Asia, Alaska, and Hawaii are all visited during the month-long cruise that leaves from the ship’s homeport in Long Beach.

It will depart in late August for the U.S.-Asia itinerary, and in mid-October for the Asia-US itinerary.

Galveston’s fourth ship

A fourth ship will join Carnival’s Galveston fleet for the 2024-2025 season. Carnival Miracle will sail to the Caribbean and Panama Canal after repositioning from the West Coast.

Carnival currently offers 19 cruises from its Texas homeport, including the 12-night Carnival Journey to the Southern Caribbean, which includes ports in Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire.

Ships are different in Baltimore and Tampa

Baltimore and Tampa will receive new Carnival ships in 2024. A year-round cruise program will begin from Maryland after Carnival Pride replaces the Legend in April.

After its summer season in Europe, the Carnival Legend will reposition to Tampa in November.

Journeys to the Carnival

The Carnival Journeys program will also be expanded in 2024. The company describes the cruises as limited “special cruises that will amaze” with longer itineraries that typically include unusual ports and exotic destinations.

The Carnival Spirit will sail 14 nights to Alaska this year, the Carnival Pride will cruise three times to Greenland, and the Carnival Radiance will sail to Hawaii again.

Miami, Port Canaveral, Galveston, Mobile and New York City

A number of homeports will also continue to develop in 2024. The Carnival Spirit will remain homeported in Mobile after its debut in Alabama in late 2023, for example.

The city of Miami and the city of New York City are also getting new year-round services. During the first year, Carnival Magic will add an additional ship to the fleet, while Carnival Venezia will debut for the first time in the second year.

Starting in late 2023, the Carnival Jubilee will launch a year-round cruise program from Port Canaveral, replacing the Carnival Conquest in Galveston.

Carnival Corp. Releases 2023 Sustainability Report

  • April 10, 2024

Carnival Jubilee Arrives in Galveston

Carnival Corporation has released its 14th annual sustainability report detailing meaningful progress in its six sustainability focus areas, including toward its highest-priority goals supporting climate action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promoting a circular economy model to reduce waste.

The company said achieved several 2030 environmental goals well in advance and is tracking ahead of schedule on a number of other key targets, including GHG intensity reductions. Details are outlined in the full report, titled “Sustainable from Ship to Shore,” and available on the company’s website at www.CarnivalSustainability.com .

“Thanks to our 160,000 remarkable team members who show up every day with passion and dedication, 2023 was a year of significant accomplishments across the board,” said Josh Weinstein, CEO and chief climate officer for Carnival Corporation. “We achieved record-breaking financial performance, welcomed three stunning new ships, expanded our global presence to over 800 incredible destinations and communities, and delivered unforgettable happiness to 12.5 million guests by providing them with extraordinary cruise vacations.\

Added Weinstein: “We also demonstrated our continued commitment to leading the way in making cruising more sustainable, marked by amazing progress toward reaching – and in many cases, exceeding – our vital 2030 environmental performance targets. Since we’re so aggressively tracking toward all our 2030 sustainability goals, we’re evaluating new interim targets along our pursuit of net zero GHG emissions by 2050.”

Highlights;

  • GHG Intensity: Tracking toward its 2030 goal four years ahead of schedule, the company formally committed to reducing its GHG intensity by at least 20% by 2026 (versus 2019 levels; measured on a lower berth capacity basis). The company expects this performance to put it ahead of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2030 carbon intensity reduction timeline.
  • Shore Power: Surpassing its 2030 goal in 2023 – seven years early – the company now leads the industry with 64% of its fleet shore power-capable, meaning it has twice as many ships able to “plug in” than there are ports equipped to provide shore power. The company is now working closely with port authorities worldwide to foster increased adoption of this important technology.
  • Particulate Matter: Recording a 68% reduction in absolute particulate matter emissions (versus the 2015 baseline), the company continued accelerating well beyond its 2030 goal to reduce particulate matter emissions by 50%.
  • Food Waste: Achieving a 38% reduction in food waste per person (versus the 2019 baseline), the company came within two percentage points of reaching its 2025 goal to reduce food waste by 40% and continues efforts toward achieving its 50% food reduction goal by 2030.
  • Single-Use Items: As of 2023, the company had cut down enormously on single-use items and plastics, eliminating ~500 million single-use items from the fleet by the end of last year (compared to 2018) – outpacing its 2030 50% reduction goal, which it initially surpassed in 2021, nine years early.
  • Advanced Waste Water Treatment Systems: Finishing the year just a few points shy of its 2030 goal to outfit 75% of its fleet capacity with AWWTS, in 2023, the company had completed installation of systems covering 70% of the company’s fleet capacity, purifying even more water used onboard to municipal-water quality before releasing it back to nature.

Lvmh’s tag heuer opens largest boutique at sea on carnival jubilee.

The collection onboard Carnival Jubilee includes Tag Heuer's Carrera Skipper.

Tag Heuer, a star performer in the watches portfolio of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton last year, has opened a 550-square-foot boutique on Carnival Jubilee, marking the biggest standalone store for the luxury brand at sea.

The launch on one of Carnival’s flagship vessels—plying a Gulf of Mexico route from this Saturday—is the latest in the brand’s expansion in the duty-free cruise channel. Jubilee’s seven-day cruise starts at Galveston, Texas with stops along Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Cruise retailer Starboard is the operator of the store and continues a partnership that spans more than 20 years. Like Tag Hauer, Starboard was, until recently, also controlled by LVMH before the French luxury group sold most of its stake to Florida-based Gissy Investments, to form a new joint-venture company called Global Travel Retail Holdings.

In a statement about the new watch boutique, Starboard’s president and CEO Lisa Bauer talked of “nurturing guests on their shopping journey at sea” and connecting them with “perfect” vacation mementos.

Carrera in the spotlight

Tag Heuer plans to do more than that. Last year, the brand celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Carrera collection with the launch of the Glassbox ($6,450*) and a five-minute-movie campaign starring Ryan Gosling that’s had more than 20 million views on YouTube. The brand is also expanding its range designed in partnership with Porsche.

Carnival Jubilee currently has itineraries in the Gulf of Mexico.

Onboard Carnival Jubilee, Tag Heuer’s boutique is a modern affair, paying homage to the brand’s motor-sport heritage with bold blue and orange hues that make a distinct impression. The retail concept was created in-house by the brand’s design and architecture team in Switzerland.

Franck Suznjevic, Tag Heuer’s executive vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, said: “There is huge momentum with Tag Heuer clientele in cruise retail and, together with Starboard, we are committed to delivering precision, performance, and savoir-faire for new and existing customers at sea.”

Among the products that are expected to grab the attention of cruise passengers are some nautical-themed timepieces. They include the Carrera Skipper ($6,750, see main image above), said to be a tribute to Tag Heuer’s “return to the high seas and sailing heritage.”

Though it has a traditional chronograph look, the watch stands out thanks to an eye-catching trio of colors in the two mini dials surrounded by a brushed main dial in Carrera’s signature blue, a tone inspired by the sea.

The Tag Heuer boutique on Carnival Jubilee is colorful and bright.

Other special models include the technical precision of the Tag Heuer Monaco Skeleton ($10,750), integrating, for the first time, a complex skeleton dial with bold colors in a square format; the Carrera Chronosprint x Porsche ($9,200); and Aquaracer Solargraph collection (from $2,150).

Swiss watches on the crest of a wave

Swiss-made timepieces have been a success for Carnival helped by Starboard’s drive to roll out brands from houses like Cartier, IWC IWC , Montblanc, and Panerai. Luis Terife, vice president of onboard guest commerce at Carnival Cruise Line commented: “The success to date reinforces the incredible opportunity we see in expanding our Swiss offering for our luxury guests.”

Founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland, Tag Heuer, under the LVMH umbrella, has expanded to a network of 260 boutiques and 2,300 points of sale globally. The brand was led by Frédéric Arnault, the second son of the world’s richest man, multi-billionaire Bernard Arnault , before he stepped up to become CEO of the entire LVMH Watches business in January. He was succeeded at Tag Heuer by Julien Tornare.

The house continues to pursue a strategy of opening directly operated stores and is gradually taking direct control over its distribution in South Korea. Last year, Tag Heuer also relocated its Fifth Avenue store in New York.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse is impacting cruises and could cause up to $10 million in losses for Carnival

By Caitlin O'Kane

Updated on: March 28, 2024 / 10:22 PM EDT / CBS News

The Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse  has impacted cruise travel in Baltimore. Carnival Cruise Line had to temporarily move its Baltimore operations to Norfolk, Virginia, as the Baltimore Harbor has been closed to marine traffic — which could cause up to a $10 million monetary loss for the company.

The company's ship, Carnival Legend, was scheduled to return to Baltimore on  Sunday, March 31, but guests will instead go to Norfolk. There will be a complimentary bus service to get back to Baltimore from that port, Carnival announced on Tuesday . The drive between these cities could be up to five hours long.

The upcoming Carnival Legend cruise on March 31 will depart and return to Norfolk.

"Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore," Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. "We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk."

"We will continue to actively monitor the situation and look forward to getting back to Baltimore as soon as possible," a Carnival spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

As for the impact on business, the spokesperson told CBS News the company expects a less than $10 million impact on both adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization as well as its adjusted net income for the full year 2024.

Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore

Cruise Lines International Association , the largest cruise industry trade association, says 12 cruise ships made 115 trips through Baltimore in 2024. And in 2023, about 444,000 cruise passengers moved through the port, the 29th largest in the U.S.

Other cruise companies like Royal Caribbean and American Cruise Lines also have ships that go to Baltimore, however, it is unclear if those lines have been impacted yet. CBS News reached out to several cruise companies for comment.

The bridge collapsed around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday when a cargo ship, called the Dali , lost power and crashed into one of the bridge's columns. The ship made a mayday call ahead of the crash and first responders were able to prevent cars from driving onto the bridge, but eight construction workers  were on the structure pouring concrete.

Two of the construction workers were recovered alive, but the other six were presumed dead on Tuesday. Two bodies were found in a construction vehicle  submerged in the water on Wednesday.

Following the incident, Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and President Biden said the federal government would pay for the entire cost of reconstructing the bridge, which is still sitting in the river, on top of the cargo ship, which had 22 people on board – none of them harmed.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday March 26, 2024, after a support column was struck by a vessel.

Baltimore is the ninth-busiest port in the nation and handled a record 11.7 million tons of cargo last year,  the Associated Press reports. More than 50 shipping and cruise ship companies do business with the port, mainly moving cars, coal, wood, steel, aluminum, home appliances, furniture, sugar and liquefied natural gas.

"For everybody who is buying cars, for everybody who is (buying) farm equipment, we're the largest port in the country that does that," Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said . "So this is not just impacting Maryland."

Shipping companies and automakers will likely divert ships heading to Baltimore to other East Coast cities, experts say, according to the AP.

Ships waiting to get into Baltimore were stalled after the incident, with many drifting in the North Atlantic, waiting to be assigned to a new port, according to Windward Maritime, which analyzes maritime data.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge  won't be easy or cheap. "That does not necessarily mean it will take five years to replace, but that tells you what went into that original structure going up," he said. "We need to get a sense of the conditions, of the parts that look ok, to the naked eye, but we just don't know yet, especially in terms of their foundational infrastructure."

White nights festival - russia's biggest celebration.

Avatar

World festivals mark global events that are a must-see for any dedicated traveler. Although lesser known than major global favorites like Carnival or Burning Man , the White Nights Festival in Russia is a collision of culture, arts and music that provides one of the richest experience around.

Every May through July, the streets of St. Petersburg, Russia, come alive with colorful celebrations and performances by some of the world's most talented artists. The White Nights Festival is an international arts festival that takes place during the season of the midnight sun, when the Northern Light shines at both dawn and dusk, allowing the millions of festival-goers that visit each year the opportunity to celebrate all day and all night long.

A Cultural Celebration of Music and Arts

The festival celebrates the arts of opera, ballet, and classical music and is kicked off with the "Stars of the White Nights" at the world famous Mariinsky Theatre. The program presents the company's most exceptional productions, with performances by leading Russian and international artists, and combines famous historical productions along with new premieres and contemporary pieces. This year's program kicks off on May 27th and has featured nationally renowned productions like Swan Lake in the past. During the festival there are daily evening performances of either ballet or opera at the theatre and classical or opera musical performances at the Mariinsky Concert Hall. The series of performances always features some of the biggest names in the arts world, including famed Spanish tenor Placido Domingo, Russian operatic soprano Anna Netrebko , and Los Angeles Opera conductor James Conlon. Ballet performances have included revivals of Russian choreographer George Balanchine's classics, as well as contemporary dance versions of The Nutcracker and Cinderella. The performances are all widely attended and visitors' best bet would be to purchase tickets online in advance.

Carnivals - Fun for the Whole Family

Carnivals also occur during the White Nights Festival and allow both children and adults to delight in traditional games and fine food. The largest carnival is held in the suburb of Peterhof, where historical figures and events are reinterpreted by costumed actors. Carnivals at the Catherine Palace and in the Pavlovsk suburb of St. Petersburg are also known for their highly artistic reproductions of the historic events that took place at those palaces. For music lovers, St. Petersburg's Palace Square becomes home to some of the international music world's biggest stars during the festival. The large square has been used for official military parades and massive demonstrations, and has also been the site of recent concerts by legendary musicians like Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones.

Fireworks and Finales

The culminating event of the festival is the Scarlet Sails celebration, which is a massive event to celebrate the end of the school year that is known for its spectacular fireworks display and a water show that features boats full of pirates battling on the Neva River. Musical acts and motorboat and rowing races are also highlights of the celebration. The tradition began in St. Petersburg after the end of WWII, when several schools in Leningrad united to celebrate the ending of a school year in connection with symbolism of the popular children's book "Scarlet Sails" by Alexander Grin. At the first celebration a boat with scarlet sails sailed along the English Embankment and the Admiralty Embankment towards the Winter Palace.

Cruises are heading to different ports because of the Baltimore bridge collapse, and Carnival says it's only taking a little loss

  • The Baltimore bridge collapse will have a small impact on Carnival's bottom line.
  • Carnival secured a temporary home port in Norfolk, Virginia, to minimize operational changes.
  • Royal Caribbean and American Cruise Line's operations may also be affected.

Insider Today

Tuesday's Baltimore bridge collapse may marginally affect the world's largest cruise company.

All vessel traffic has been halted at Baltimore's port, stopping both containerships and cruise ships.

Josh Weinstein, the CEO of Carnival, addressed the incident at the start of Wednesday's earnings call, thanking emergency services and the Coast Guard. Noting the "fluid" situation, he said the port closure's impact was not factored into full-year guidance or the earnings presentation, which covered the three months ending February 29.

Related stories

"We expect the situation to have less than a $10 million impact on a full-year guidance," Weinstein said .

The company said it secured a temporary home port in Norfolk, Virginia, for as long as needed, which should minimize operational changes. One of its cruises, the Carnival Legend, departed on Sunday for a seven-day round trip from the Baltimore port and will return instead to Norfolk. Its passengers will be bussed back to Baltimore , Weinstein said.

Without factoring in the collapse, Carnival's adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization for 2024 are expected to be $5.63 billion, according to its earnings release .

Carnival stock fell about 3% at 10:20 a.m. in New York after the earnings call before paring losses. Competitors Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line were up around 3% and 6% respectively at closing.

Other cruise companies that sail out of Baltimore are similarly adjusting their plans.

The second-largest cruise operator, Royal Caribbean, has about 30 cruises out of Baltimore scheduled for the rest of this year. One left Baltimore on Saturday, with plans to return on April 4. The company is working on "alternatives" for that ship and others slated to sail out of the port, per the Washington Post .

American Cruise Line also frequents the Baltimore port on East Coast itineraries — its American Glory cruise is set to sail next week. The company has over 30 cruises scheduled from the Baltimore port for the rest of 2024.

The Baltimore port is the 17th-largest in the US, and the bridge collapse has left six construction workers presumed dead .
