Mo was an excellent tour leader in that he has such passion and enthusiasm about Jordan. I learnt so much about the history and culture and so enjoyed all of the activities. Mo went over and beyond to ensure my dietary needs were met as I have coeliac disease which was much appreciated. Highly recommend this tour.

Dead Sea From Amman

Dead Sea from Amman

Dead Sea Amman Beach

Located in the Jordan Valley, part of the Great Rift Valley that runs from East Africa to Turkey, the Dead Sea is the remains of a giant inland lake. Lake Lisan was 200 kilometers long and approximately 200 meters deeper than the current level of the Dead Sea. As it contracted, it left Lake Tiberias and the Dead Sea, which at 408 meters below sea level is the lowest point on earth.

The salt content of the sea is 20%, eight times the level of the world s oceans. This concentration contributes to the amazing buoyancy of the water and is a legacy of years of evaporation. The only life forms left in the Dead Sea are eleven species of bacteria. The waters are rich in minerals, including calcium, magnesium, bromine, iodine, and bitumen. All these have healing properties that can alleviate or ease allergies, skin rashes, bronchial irritations or glandular conditions. Visitors come from all over the world to ease or cure their conditions at the medical treatment centers at the Dead Sea. Even those suffering only from ennui can enjoy the high-quality spas in the area. In addition, due the unique depth of its location, the climate and quality of sunshine in the Dead Sea area is beneficial. Dead Sea salts and mud are known worldwide for their healthful properties.

With us, you can enjoy a memorable dead sea holiday tour. Your full day trip to the Dead Sea starts from Amman (if one to three persons, then in a Modern Sedan vehicle or we use an H1 van for accommodating four to seven).

The full-day trip to the Dead Sea will help you explore the Mount Nebo, Baptism Site, A-Mujib Siq Trail “Summer Time” .

Sunset at Amman Beach.

Its 2km south of the main resort strip, is run by Amman municipality to give affordable access to the Dead Sea. The grounds are attractively landscaped and the beach is clean, with sun umbrellas, freshwater showers and a vibrant local flavour, making it a great place to strike up conversation with a Jordanian family. There are also a number of swimming pools, a restaurant (JD10 buffet), some drinks stalls, basketball courts and an amusement park next door.

Dead Sea from Amman Image

DENVER — A superheated blast from the skies obliterated cities and farming settlements north of the Dead Sea around 3,700 years ago, preliminary findings suggest.

Radiocarbon dating and unearthed minerals that instantly crystallized at high temperatures indicate that a massive airburst caused by a meteor that exploded in the atmosphere instantaneously destroyed civilization in a 25-kilometer-wide circular plain called Middle Ghor, said archaeologist Phillip Silvia. The event also pushed a bubbling brine of Dead Sea salts over once-fertile farm land, Silvia and his colleagues suspect.

People did not return to the region for 600 to 700 years, said Silvia, of Trinity Southwest University in Albuquerque. He reported these findings at the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research on November 17.

Excavations at five large Middle Ghor sites, in what’s now Jordan, indicate that all were continuously occupied for at least 2,500 years until a sudden, collective collapse toward the end of the Bronze Age. Ground surveys have located 120 additional, smaller settlements in the region that the researchers suspect were also exposed to extreme, collapse-inducing heat and wind. An estimated 40,000 to 65,000 people inhabited Middle Ghor when the cosmic calamity hit, Silvia said.

The most comprehensive evidence of destruction caused by a low-altitude meteor explosion comes from the Bronze Age city of Tall el-Hammam, where a team that includes Silvia has been excavating for the last 13 years. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the mud-brick walls of nearly all structures suddenly disappeared around 3,700 years ago, leaving only stone foundations.

What’s more, the outer layers of many pieces of pottery from same time period show signs of having melted into glass. Zircon crystals in those glassy coats formed within one second at extremely high temperatures, perhaps as hot as the surface of the sun, Silvia said.

High-force winds created tiny, spherical mineral grains that apparently rained down on Tall el-Hammam, he said. The research team has identified these minuscule bits of rock on pottery fragments at the site.

Examples exist of exploding space rocks that have wreaked havoc on Earth (SN: 5/13/17, p. 12). An apparent meteor blast over a sparsely populated Siberian region in 1908, known as the Tunguska event, killed no one but flattened 2,000 square kilometers of forest. And a meteor explosion over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013 injured more than 1,600 people, mainly due to broken glass from windows that were blown out.

Amman to Dead Sea Guide (2024): Car, Bus, Taxi, Day Tour

Getting from Amman to the Dead Sea is not too complicated, as there are limited options on how to do it. Whether you are planning on going to the Dead Sea from Amman as a day trip or as part of a one-way itinerary through Jordan, it is all highway driving (once you are out of Amman).

Amman to the Dead Sea distance is only about 45 minutes by car, but unfortunately for visitors, there are no reliable and frequent public transit options . But do not worry, I have been to the Dead Sea several times while in Jordan. In my guide to getting to the Dead Sea, you will find options for getting there by car, bus and private transfers. I rent a car , but there are other ways to do it.

Lindsay Guide from Amman to the Dead Sea

How to Get from Amman to the Dead Sea

So I wanted to start with why the Dead Sea is so popular for those who are starting their research. It is one of the top things to do in Jordan. It offers more than ticking off a bucket list and taking a salty dip as a curious tourist. The air has a higher oxygen concentration in this area and its mineral-rich properties bring people from all over the world who are suffering from various types of skin diseases and rheumatism. SOme visit and stay for quite awhile. Most tourists however, come and explore the salty shores, take a dip, enjoy a resort and then move on on their travels.

Amman to the Dead Sea by Rental Car

My suggested method for visiting the Dead Sea from Amman is to rent a car and drive yourself there. A rental car in Jordan is about 25-30JD per day (depending on the car size etc) and once you are out of downtown Amman, it is highway driving from the 7th Circle in Amman to the Dead Sea. There are various checkpoints on the way, and as a visitor, I have never had more than a glance at my Canadian passport (and my kids in the back) and been waved through to continue.  I suggest that if you have time, to spend a night at one of the many Dead Sea Hotels so you can enjoy a dip, then enjoy the amenities of the resort as well before returning to Amman or continuing on your Jordan self-drive itinerary!

But if you only have time for an Amman to Dead Sea day trip, it is only about 45 minutes by car and you can easily visit for a few hours and then drive back to Amman the same day! It is also the perfect way to start or end an entire itinerary in Jordan.

Jordan - Dead Sea

Amman to Dead Sea Taxi

It is possible to hire a taxi to take you for an Amman to Dead Sea day trip. You can also take a one-way fare, but it would probably be easier to negotiate to hire the driver for the day and then you have a ride back to Amman after you have finished visiting the Dead Sea. They might even be able to stop at a few souvenir shops outside of the hotel strip where you can purchase Dead Sea mud, as well as a lot of other souvenirs from Jordan .

It is very difficult to get a taxi out of the Dead Sea area unless arranged in advance, so I highly suggest you negotiate a round-trip fare if you choose this route. Prices can vary but expect about JD75 for a day rate.

Private Driver

Similar to a taxi, you can hire a driver for the day to take you to the Dead Sea. I have been stopped on the street and offered cards from drivers, but your hotel can help you find something suitable most likely. Similar to taxi’s expect about JD75 for a day rate.

Here is an example of a private driver you can book online .

Amman to Dead Sea Day Trips

If you are not comfortable renting a car to drive to the Dead Sea, this would be the second option I would suggest. You can prebook a day tour from Amman to the Dead Sea and you will probably get more bang for your buck if you do a Madaba, Mount Nebo, Dead Sea tour.

Check out Tour Options:

Madaba, Nebo and Dead Sea Private Tour: This tour gives you entrance to Dead Sea Beach, as well as a visit to Mount Nebo and Madaba in a private air-conditioned vehicle.

Amman and Dead Sea Tour:  This tour offers a driving tour through Amman including a visit to the Amman Citadel and the markets. The tour then makes its way to the Dead Sea. It does not include entrance fees however so expect to pay entrance fees to the Amman Citadel and a private beach at the Dead Sea.

Madaba and Dead Sea Tour: This one includes a visit to Madaba and Saint George’s Church, as well as Mount Nebo, the baptism site and the Dead Sea. It does not include any entrance fees.

Visiting the Dead Sea as a stop on an Organized Tour

I love tours. I am not afraid to say it. All I have to do is choose a destination and let someone figure out all of the logistics for me! If you are like me and like this kind of travel, then a visit to the Dead Sea is likely on your itinerary! You will not have to worry about the logistics of getting there as your tour will likely include a day pass in one of the resorts where you can enjoy the amenities of the resort (like the pools etc) after you have experienced the Dead Sea!

Amman to Dead Sea Bus

It is often hard to remember that Jordan is still an emerging tourism market. While it seems like a no-brainer that there would be busses around the country, moving tourists by bus has not developed much. Recently JETT has made mention of a dailly bus from Amman to the Dead Sea. However, I have not seen recent options to book this online. You can inquire at JETT when you are in Jordan.

There is an Amman to Dead Sea local mini-bus service for those wanting a local option or are on a backpacker budget. While I find this a bit of a hassle, you can take a bus from Mujaharin Station in downtown Amman to Rame and then taxi to wherever you wish to go at the Dead Sea. It is best to know a few words of Arabic if you plan on using local transportation in Jordan as each time I have hopped on one, the driver has not spoken any English! This is your cheapest option for a bus from Amman to the Dead Sea.

Where to Stay at the Dead Sea

Each of these hotels is located on the Dead Sea and has frontage at the beach. Many other hotels offer shuttles to the beach. If you want to be able to walk from your hotel room to float at the Dead Sea, choose one of these hotels! Many also offer day rates to use the pools and the beach. It is impossible to book online but you can call the hotels in advance to ask about the day rate. If you want my suggestion, spend a night at the Dead Sea Spa.  By the time you pay for beach access for the day, you could book a room for the night for just a few extra dollars.

Amman – Dead Sea – Amman (Daily)

About this tour.

Departure Time from Jett Abdali Station at 8:30

Departure Time from Jett office 7th. Circle at 9:00 ( Location )

Return from the Dead Sea to Amman at 17:00

The Dead Sea, located in the Jordan Valley and 55 km southeast of Amman, is famously known as the Lowest Point on Earth. It is a one of kind natural landscape with the world’s richest source of natural salts and mud known for its health properties. At the Dead Sea, visitors can relax for hours,  swim,  sunbathe and experience the healing benefits of the therapeutic mud.  People flock from around the world to this natural spa for skin treatment and the chance to float on the water’s surface.

The Amman – Dead Sea – Amman route runs daily.

We Highly Recommend you reserve Swim and Lunch Package for easy comfortable access

  • The Dead Sea, which lies between Israel (and the West Bank) and Jordan, is the lowest point on earth, reaching depths of 13,000 feet (3,900m) below sea level. This enclosed body of water's high salt content makes it impossible for any kind of plant or animal life to survive. For humans, however, the rich accumulation of salt and minerals is highly beneficial, especially for the skin. In addition, the high concentration of salt makes it nearly impossible for even the most inexperienced of swimmers to drown in the sea's waters. The town of Suweimeh offers accommodations for those wishing to spend one or two nights along the sea. There are also numerous plans underway to develop additional towns, including Zara and El Mazra'a, into major tourist resorts. It was built along a hillside in the 2nd century, large enough to seat about 6,000 spectators in one time, and is still used as a venue for the city’s cultural events. Then we will visit Amman Citadel located on the top of the city’s highest hill. It has a long history of being occupied by several great civilizations and therefore many featured remnants of different cultures were left. Particularly remarkable is its panoramic view of the entire city. Inside the fortress, you will also visit Jordan Archaeological Museum and Umayyad Palace, an 8th-century palatial complex with an imposing domed entrance chamber. When the Amman city tour is completed, we will drive 2 hours to Petra.

Day 3: Petra visit and Wadi Rum tour (120 km)

Today we are going to tour Petra, the ancient capital established by the mysterious Nabataean. It, described by a poet as “a rose-red city half as old as time”, is a city carved into the surrounding sandstone mountains, and so did the evidences of its history and ancient civilization. You will have a horse ride from the entrance gate to a 1.2-kilometer-long gorge called Siq. Then hike through the deep and narrow gorge to visit Al-Khazneh Temple, better known as The Treasure. It is one of the most extraordinary rock-cut architecture in Petra, which was hewn into a red-colored sandstone cliff, supported by tall columns, and engraved with intricate carvings. Other places within the city center such as Royal Tombs, the Monastery, and the Theatre are also worth exploring.

In the early afternoon, we will take a 1.5-hour drive to Wadi Rum, nicknamed The Valley of the Moon well-known for its spectacular alien-like landscape. The red sandstone mountains, strange rock formations, sea of rolling red dunes, and clear night sky make people feel like stepping on the moon. If weather permits, you may catch the chance to see its awe-inspiring sunset. At the end of our Wadi Rum tours, we will have dinner and overnight at the campsite inside the desert.

  • Overnight in Wadi Rum
  • Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner
  • Accommodation: Rum Stars Camp OR Sun City Camp or similar (Standard quality)

Day 4: Private transfer from Wadi Rum to Dead Sea

Today we will go for a 3-hour drive to Dead Sea, the last stop of our Wadi Rum tour packages. After the hotel check-in, you could enjoy exploring the place without company. Dead Sea, more precisely, a hypersaline lake, located 430 meters (1,410 feet) below sea level, holds its reputation as the lowest place on the surface of the earth. Though without fish and aquatic plants living in it, its high salinity environment offers a magical body buoyancy experience and its mud rich in minerals is very good for skin massage.

  • Overnight in Dead Sea
  • Accommodation: Dead Sea Spa Hotel OR Holiday Inn Hotel OR Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa or similar (Standard quality)

Day 5: Drive to Amman Airport for departure

Free time in the morning to enjoy the resort and the beach area. You will check out from your hotel in Dead Sea (hotel check-out is before 12:00 noon) and will then be transferred to the Amman Airport according to your flight details. This will be the end of our tour and services.
