Spectacular Glaciers, Denali & Alaska Rail Adventure

We are so grateful for the careful planning and ideal itinerary for our vacation. We loved every hotel or mountain cabin we stayed in, the boat ride through the Seward fjords, Alaska Railroad, the bush ride into Denali Park for a close enough encounter with a mama grizzly and her 2 cubs....and awesome scenery at every curve.

Wayne Michigan, United States

Excellent trip. Well planned out. We were able to get all our additional destinations accommodated.

Paul Williams Canada

Just a note to tell you how much we enjoyed our unexpected trip. Thank you for organising this so quickly for us to fill in the extra 5 days after the cruise was terminated.Everything went so smoothly, and we were on everyone's' 'list' on all the transfers. The best part was the small plane flight back from Denali- it was brilliant. The cruises on the Fiords were also a highlight. So, thanks again. We are thinking of coming back to view the Northern Lights at Fairbanks and also the start of the Iditarod.

Lynne Sydney, Australia

Arrival & Departure

The Camp Denali Adventure begins and ends in Anchorage, Alaska (ANC). Plan to arrive anytime on Day 1 and depart anytime on your final day. Airport transfers will be provided upon arrival on Day 1 and departure on your final day.

Internal Flights

Due to a major landslide in the Pretty Rocks section on the Denali Park Road in August of 2021, the road was closed at Mile 43, and will remain closed for the 2024 summer season. Consequently, there is no longer road access to Kantishna, where Camp Denali is located. For 2024, Camp Denali will provide round-trip fixed-wing aircraft transportation to the lodge from the Park entrance area. Luggage limit will be 25 pounds per passenger, and must be packed in soft-sided luggage. Storage for additional luggage is available at the Camp Denali office, near the Park entrance. Flight times are about 55 minutes inbound (including a scenic fly-by of Denali and the Alaska Range, weather-permitting) and 35 minutes return.

Whether you are looking for light activity options or more challenging outdoor pursuits, the guides can tailor most excursions to suit your skill level. Adventure activities include daily naturalist guided hikes with a unique, historic status of being able to hike both deep in the park near Wonder Lake, as well as in the park’s six-million-acre, trail-less wilderness. Each year Camp Denali invites guest speakers to share their expertise in the field and through evening presentations.

Guided hikes

The strenuous hike (all-day outing, 4-6 miles, up to 1,800 feet elevation gain) is for guests who want to hike at a steady pace for longer distances and gain significant elevation. Moderate hikes (all-day outing, 3-5 miles, up to 800 feet elevation gain) allow guests to travel through a variety of terrain at an average pace. Forays (all-day outing with 1-3 walks of a quarter to a half mile each) operate from a van and take short walks on the gravel park road, on unimproved trails or in firmer tundra, as group members are able.

Independent activities

Independent activities consist of canoeing on Wonder Lake, biking along the Denali Park road, photography and fishing for grayling in Moose Creek or trout in Wonder Lake.

Room Configuration

There are no discounts offered for triple or quad rooming. Upgrades may be available, contact us for details.

Families & Children

In our experience, families with children 8 years and older tend to gain the most from the opportunities at Camp Denali. Note that daycare is not provided and the guest complement may not include other families. Children 12 and under at time of travel receive a 15% discount when sharing a room with a full fare adult.

Travel Insurance

Protect your travel investment with insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget. Coverage for a pre-existing medical condition is also available if you purchase the Travel Select plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment; refer to plan details.  Learn more about travel insurance  or  get a free quote .

Reviews from Our Experts So You Know What to Expect

AdventureSmith's founder reviews his Camp Denali Adventure with his family of four. Learn why he says there is no better way to explore Denali National Park.

Hear It from Travelers Who Have Explored with Us

Both my husband and I absolutely loved our trip and wouldn't have changed a thing about it. We highly recommend AdventureSmith, Taylor and our itinerary to anyone who is looking for an active, outdoor adventure trip in Alaska. Let AdventureSmith plan your trip and you won't regret it!

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

Overall our trip was perfect! The variety of activities and the length of stay in each location was ideal. We felt like for our first trip to Alaska we saw a great variety of landscapes and wildlife.

We started with a week aboard an UnCruise boat on the inside passage and as far north as Glacier Bay National Park. We saw lots of humpback whales, orcas, sea lions, and many types of birds, beautiful rainforest and stunning glaciers. Next we traveled to Denali National Park and had the opportunity to hike the mountains and tundra and see grizzly bears, caribou, moose, beavers and lots of birds and small animals. Lastly we spent a week on the Kenai Peninsula first on the Kenai River, then rafting to Skilak Lake and staying at the Backcountry Lodge and lastly traveling by boat through Resurrection Bay to the Glacier Lodge where we had gorgeous views of the Pederson Glacier from our cabin. On this leg of our trip we saw lots of shorebirds, black bear, otters, harbor seals, stunning scenery and several glaciers. We had the opportunity to hike, kayak, canoe and just sit on our porch and enjoy the amazing scenery.

Both my husband and I absolutely loved our trip and wouldn't have changed a thing about it. We highly recommend Adventuresmith, Taylor and our itinerary to anyone who is looking for an active, outdoor adventure trip in Alaska.

Accommodations Review

All of our accommodations from the Safari Explorer UnCruise boat, Camp Denali Lodge and the three Kenai Lodges [Kenai Riverside Lodge, Kenai Backcountry Lodge, and Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge] were amazing and all unique in their own ways.

Meals Review

The meals on each leg of our trip were amazing first class dining experiences. Our favorites were the Safari Explorer and the Kenai Backcountry Lodge.

Crew & Guides Review

We had many different trip leaders and guides throughout our trip and all of them were excellent. They were all knowledgeable in their own areas and helped us to learn about the history or each area we visited, the wildlife in each area, as well as the animals that were native to each area. Even the chefs informed us about the meals we were enjoying. All of our guides, chefs and leaders were so enthusiastic about their areas of expertise.

Itinerary Review

We liked various parts of each leg of our trip. The inside passage for the marine life and the Tongass National Forest and Glacier Bay National Park. Denali National Park for the great hiking, glaciers, the tundra which I knew nothing about but learned to appreciate and enjoy the beauty of as well as the wildlife of the park. And the Kenai Peninsula portion of our trip for the activities like rafting the Kenai River, hiking through the stunning scenic countryside and enjoying the peace of the Backcountry Lodge and boating from Resurrection Bay to the Glacier Lodge and seeing the glaciers coming down from the Harding Icefield. Juneau and Anchorage were not very pretty towns but we were glad that we had the opportunity to see them.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

AdventureSmith, and specifically Taylor, was so thorough and meticulous in planning our trip. She had first hand experience and knowledge of each location and planned our trip with the perfect amount of time in each location. I don't think we would change anything about our itinerary. We would absolutely recommend AdventureSmith and specifically Taylor to anyone contemplating traveling to Alaska.

Note that this review also includes comments on the traveler’s  Prince William Sound Discovery cruise with AdventureSmith Exploration s.

This was certainly one of the top three trips we have taken in our 35 years we have been married. I'm waiting a while to put it into perspective, but it is probably the top one. I will be recommending the Discovery cruise in particular to my travelling friends! Camp Denali and especially the Discovery crew went out of their way to personalize our experience, make sure we were taken care of, and adjusting daily itineraries to account for the weather. We got to see beautiful scenery, wildlife, and learned a lot about the places and animals we were seeing.

We visited Alaska on our honeymoon 35 years ago and wanted to get back to see Denali and tidewater glaciers (we saw Glacier Bay from large cruise ship). We were among 20 people on the cruise ship outside when that ship visited Glacier Bay, and found the focus on entertainment, shopping, and eating was not our style. The Discovery cruise bypassed everything we didn't care for on the large cruise ship and packed our days with activities and sights that made us want to return to Alaska. The personal service and camaraderie were an added bonus!

We did not anticipate the convenience of the short bus trips at Camp Denali to the daily adventures. We saw plentiful wildlife each day with much shorter drives and were able to get out of the bus for extended appreciation of the park on foot.

Camp Denali - rustic, but nice cabins ("glamping"); wonderful lodge.

Camp Denali - excellent main courses; more emphasis on "health-food" for side dishes than we cared for.

Camp Denali - all guides were very knowledgeable about general interest topics, plus at least one specialty.

Transportation Review

Transportation went smoothly.

Pre-trip communication was timely and accurate. Your packing lists were spot-on. We combined two of the AdventureSmith offerings into a single trip. I usually book trips on my own, after exhaustive internet research. This trip involved combining two trips with limited start and end dates. AdventureSmith helped ensure that the trips were compatible and also worked with me to adjust the itineraries for some self-directed travel at the beginning of the trip. I also appreciate the reassurances that AdventureSmith provided when wildfires threatened some of the transportation plans. They assured me that they were in daily contact with the service providers and that backup plans were available in case there were any disruptions.

DO IT! We spent three years vacation budget on this trip. And it was worth it! The five day trip on the Discovery was a good length. I would have enjoyed an additional day. I think I would have been disappointed with a 3-day/2-night trip, in that it would have been hard to get in enough of the activities that we enjoyed so much. (Like eating an appetizer when you want a full meal).

Wilderness adventure tours beyond imagination, denali national park tour packages | denali activities and sightseeing tours, welcome to denali national park | more than a mountain ... hiking, wildlife viewing, adventure activities in alaska.

denali land tours from anchorage

Denali National Park and Preserve is a vast and breathtaking wilderness area that spans over six million acres. Its centerpiece is Denali, the highest peak in North America, towering at 20,310 feet. The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, encompassing taiga forests, alpine tundra, and snow-clad mountains. Established in 1917 as Mount McKinley National Park, it was later renamed Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980, emphasizing the significance of the native Athabaskan name "Denali," meaning "the high one." The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, hosting a variety of species such as grizzly bears, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, and migratory birds. A notable feature is the Denali Wilderness, which covers a significant portion of the park and is designated to preserve the natural environment in its pristine state. The park offers limited road access to reduce human impact, promoting a sense of remoteness and wilderness. Visitors can explore the landscape through bus tours, hiking trails, and ranger-led programs. The park stands as a testament to the unspoiled beauty of Alaska's wilderness and the importance of conservation efforts in preserving such remarkable landscapes for future generations. The park is crossed by a single road. Along this road, travelers see the relatively low-elevation taiga forest transition to high alpine tundra and snow-capped mountains. On a drive along the park road, visitors may see a moose grazing in a stand of willows, caribou resting on a snowfield, Dall sheep high on the slopes, a wolf trotting across the tundra, or a grizzly bear feeding on blueberries. A goal of many visitors to the park is to see the "Big Five." Solitude, tranquility and wilderness await you. We offer a wide variety of Denali vacation packages, ranging from driving tours , motorcoach tours and railroad adventures .

Hiking at Denali National Park

There are not very many marked trails in Denali, and most of the trails here are short (less than 2 miles) and near the park entrance. One of the reasons Denali exists is to provide people with a place to explore a trail-less wilderness, and a result of this is a limited trail network. Some of these trails are utilitarian—they travel alongside the Denali Park Road and connect the visitor center with other important facilities in the entrance area of the park. Other trails offer a departure from the immediate surroundings of the park's only road, allowing you to seek a bit of solace and quiet, while still having an obvious, established path to follow. Hiking off-trail can seem intimidating at first, but is a memorable and unique experience. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Arriving into Seward by Cruise Ship or Alaska Ferry ? And want to explore more of Alaska ?? Then we have the perfect Alaska rail tour ready for you. Board the comfortable motorcoach in Seward and enjoy the scenic transfer along Turnagain Arm to Anchorage. You can view Alaska’s most famous animals - grizzly bears, moose, muskox, caribou, bison -   up close in a natural setting during the stopover at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Your next destination is Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city and filled with lot of adventures along with metropolitan amenities. Board in Anchorage the last full-service railroad in North America and choose between the “Adventure Class” seating in the single-storey railway car or the “Deluxe Dome Railcar” on board the Alaska Railroad or with one of the privately operated trains. All train cars feature large panorama windows ensuring unobstructed views around every bend of the majestic beauty of the glaciers, mountains and Alaskan wildlife. An elk or moose could graze on a river. The blue of a glacier peeps out from a mountain under the melting snow in summer. Visit one of the dining carriages and, over a meal of Alaskan salmon served on fine porcelain, relive the experience. Denali National  Park  is  the  natural  habitat  for many types of wildlife including caribou, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, bald eagles, and the mighty grizzly bears. It is most likely you will spot some of them while taking our full day Denali Transit Bus to Eielson Center, Wonder Lake or Kantishna Roadhouse. You may exchange this tour and join the guided Tundra wilderness bus tour. Many optional activities and excursions are offered at Denali Village - enjoy a scenic float down the Nenana River or an exhilarating jetboat safari. Play a round of golf in the Midnight Sun, or rise above it on a thrilling flightseeing tour. Hike in the backcountry or the many trails around the visitor center. Visit an Iditarod champion's dog kennel ... and hold the puppies! It's all up to you. Please read our itinerary to have more detailed day-to-day experience. On request, this trip can be customized and organized in reverse order.

Customizing Tours

All of our tours are flexible and you can add, modify or exchange nights in destinations to suit your timetable and preferred routing. Thus, sometimes it will be necessary to observe ferry schedules, national park opening/closing dates etc. to match certain dates and/or departures. Please check also each itinerary online.

Included Services

Please refer to the appropriate tour page for a listing of included services. Our service generally includes the rental car, accommodation, applicable local taxes, ferry trips as scheduled, sightseeing as per itinerary, a detailed tour description, highway or road logs. Not included are: Meals, tunnel tolls, gasoline, entrance fees, additional sightseeing tours. The rental of a compact car (automatic) is always included in our flexible self drive tour packages. Additional rental days or upgrade to a Mid and Full Size Car, Mini Van or Sport Utility Vehicles (4x4) are available. The displayed upgrade rental rates are always per car (not per person) - and of course for the total length of the tour package. Our advertised rates include all local taxes, licensing fee, airport fee, road tax and unlimited mileage. Rental Car insurance is not included as most US guests can use their own private insurance. A valid driver license and a valid major credit card are mandatory for all individual vehicle rentals and/or tour packages including vehicle rentals. Driving on gravel roads/highways is at own risk. The rental car insurance is void on the following highways Denali Highway, Dalton Highway, Top of the World Highway, Taylor Highway, McCarthy Road, Dempster Highway and all other gravel roads. You will be responsible for any damages. Drivers have to be more than 25 years of age. Contact us if you are below 25 years of age.

Advance Reservation

If you travel during the high season from the middle/end of June until the end of August we recommend booking as early as possible to avoid disappointments with sold out situations in highly frequented national parks and gateways - because the northern tour season is very short. The same applies in/around national holidays. Any hotel accommodation, rentals cars and ferry space must be definitely booked well in advance. Thus, tour operator such as our company may still have space on a short notice. Accordingly it is well worth to contact us.

Travel Month

The last two weeks of May, June and September are perfect months for a vacation in the Land of the Midnight Sun. The weather is usually stable and sunny with almost 24 hours of daylight. July and August are prime travel months and are obviously very busy.

Emergency Assistance

You can contact us in case of an emergency. We have a dedicated 24/7 helpline available for our guests.

We strongly encourage you to purchase travel insurance to cover: cancellation fees associated with an outing as well as airfare or other nonrefundable expense in the event you need to cancel a trip; medical expenses incurred on a trip; and the cost of a possible medical evacuation from a trip, canceled flights due to weather. We have made arrangements with our trusted travel insurance provider for you to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance plan. Please contact us for details

Levis, San Francisco: Thank you for organizing this amazing post cruise tour. We arrived in Seward aboard the Celebrity Millenium and really enjoyed our visit to the Alaska wildlife conservation center. The variety of animals to view did not disappoint. The setting is perfect! I loved that you are able to observe up close - that could have been a little luck too. The schedules, vouchers, trips, tours all went according to plan and expectations. After travelling we feel we really happy with your quality of services. The McKinley resort was vey good in all facilities which had a good flexible breakfast program. We really enjoyed the Dome car ride from Anchorage to Denali and wished we had booked it to the return journey too.

An insider’s guide to Denali National Park and Preserve

Denali National Park and Preserve is named for the nation’s mightiest mountain, but the 6-million-acre park encompasses so much more. Denali has options for every type of visitor. Whether you’re an avid backpacker looking to forge new trails or a relaxed traveler content to watch for animals on a tour, you’re sure to experience jaw-dropping scenery.

Getting there

Located roughly four hours north of Anchorage and two hours south of Fairbanks on the George Parks Highway, it’s an easy drive to the heart of the state — after all, there’s only one road entrance to the park.

If you don’t have your own wheels, here’s how to get there:

Bus: One option is Alaska/Yukon Trails, a passenger van company that can transport up to 16 passengers. They run from Anchorage to Talkeetna to Denali to Fairbanks and the same route in reverse. Expect to leave town early for either departure and to get in around lunchtime. For a ride in a deluxe motorcoach, one option is The Park Connection, where travelers can either book tickets from Anchorage or Seward. Another is the Alaska Shuttle, which runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks, allowing passengers to get out at any point along the journey and rejoin via a later bus.

Train: Taking the train (the Alaska Railroad turns 101 this season) adds about three hours of travel time to your journey, but it goes through wilderness only accessible on the track. Plus, there’s a dining and bar car, knowledgeable guides and dome cars with sweeping views of the mountains and valleys along the way. The train makes a stop on the nearly 1,000-foot-long railroad bridge over an enormous gorge known as Hurricane Gulch. On a clear day, you can see Denali from there. (A more economical option both in terms of funds and time is taking the rails one way and a motorcoach back. Bonus: You’ll see even more of the state.) Check out alaskarailroad.com for more information on riding the train.

Getting around

The National Park Service maintains the only road leading into the park. It’s a 92-mile, mostly gravel route running parallel to the Alaska Range to what was once the mining community of Kantishna. Normally, from late May to early September, visitors can drive the first 12.5 miles of the road to Savage River with just their park pass.

To go farther than the dozen-ish miles allowed to personal vehicles, travelers have to be on foot, bike or riding on one of the school-bus-style shuttles. You can hop on a cheaper, more flexible bus tour that allows you to get off and on and explore on your own, or you can take a narrated bus tour with a driver who crafts an itinerary for you. There are also courtesy buses that serve the portion of the park road that is publicly drivable, which includes stops at the sled dog kennel and Visitors Center.

For summer 2024, the road will only be open to Mile 43 due to rock slides (the road is expected to reopen in 2026). Be sure to check the National Park Service site for updates.

‘Will the mountain be out?’: Where to see Denali

Rising 20,310 feet, Denali can be seen from parts of Anchorage to Fairbanks on a clear day. But clear days can be hard to come by. National Park Service rangers stress to visitors that the mammoth mountain is out only one of every three days (a rule that isn’t hard and fast — it could be out for days at a time and then hidden for a month straight).

Even with its great height, the mountain isn’t visible from the park entrance, the surrounding campgrounds or nearby hotels. Miles 9 and 11 are your first chances of spotting it, the latter spot having a pullout and interpretive waysides with information about the cliff. There are many other spots along the road that allow for peeks of the peak. While the most iconic view of Denali is at Reflection Pond, near Mile 85, the road to that view is closed in 2024, unless you’re staying at one of the fly-in-only accommodations in Kantishna.

For sure open in 2024

Sled dog kennel: Denali is the only national park in the U.S. where rangers do winter patrols via dog sled. But during the few precious months when there isn’t snow on the ground, the dogs have different duties: educating tourists, posing for pictures and getting belly rubs. Their kennel is free to visit, and their handlers are available to chat about what goes into making a sled dog. (Bonus: There’s usually a litter of puppies there training to become full-fledged sled dogs.)

Denali National Park Visitors Center: If you come in by train, the visitors center will be one of the first buildings you see. It’s the main information center in the park, with exhibits on the park’s history and the animals you might see in the boreal forest outside its doors. There are also various ranger-led activities and hikes that launch from there.

Adventure sports and flightseeing: Various operators tout all manners of escape from their storefronts on Glitter Gulch, a half-mile stretch of road near the park entrance. Activities range from ATV rides and ziplining near the park to rafting down the Nenana River or flightseeing around the mountain. Shop around to find an itinerary that matches your interest and budget.

Wonder Lake: This is where Ansel Adams’ famous photograph of the mountain was taken. When Denali isn’t shrouded in clouds, its image is mirrored in the water below, making Wonder Lake a favorite spot for photographers. However, because it’s located at Mile 85 of the Denali Park Road, it’s only accessible to those staying in Kantishna this season.

Reopening in 2026

The National Park Service has announced that the road will remain closed at Mile 43 through the 2026 season. If you’re planning ahead for a later summer, however, you can add Eielson Visitor Center to your list. Located at Mile 66, you can reach the Eielson Visitor Center by shuttle. On a clear day, the views of Denali are stunning. Three maintained trails spider out from the center, though hikers are welcome to go off path. Inside the center is also a small art gallery with works depicting the wilderness of Denali.

Where to stay

There are four campgrounds in Denali National Park that will be accessible in 2024: Riley Creek (at the park entrance), Savage River (13 miles in), Sanctuary River (23 miles) and Teklanika River (29 miles).

The sites have anywhere from seven to 53 tent-only campsites, with the exception of Riley Creek, which has 150 sites suitable for camping and RVs. Considering how few campsites there are in the park, we highly recommended you make a reservation ahead of time. For more information, go to reservedenali.com .

There are also many hotel, cabin, B&B and hostel options for visitors to Denali National Park. Many are clustered just outside the park entrance, a few are found at the end of the park road and more are located in neighboring towns.

While remote, the accommodations at the end of the park road in Kantishna are far from roughing it. Places like Denali Backcountry Lodge, Kantishna Roadhouse and Camp Denali may be 92 miles into the national park, but they don’t skimp on creature comforts like running water, electricity, heat and private bathrooms (granted, there’s no Wi-Fi or cell reception). Generally much spendier than the options at the park entrance, these lodges are usually all-inclusive. During the 2024 season, these accommodations are fly-in only.

Outside the park, your options vary widely. Crow’s Nest is made up of terraced rows of cozy cabins tucked up on a hillside, offering exponentially better views of Mount Healy the higher you go, and Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge is one of the biggest lodging options with high-end amenities, including an espresso bar, a dinner theater and laundry services. More lodging options can be found at denalichamber.com .
