digha tour image

traveller Souvik

Digha Travel Guide for planning your trip on a budget will help you explore this destination without creating holes in your pocket. Enjoy the scenic beach town of Digha and return enchanted.

The beautiful beach town of Digha is situated by the shores of the mighty Bay of Bengal. It is situated in the south of West Bengal or as the Bengalis say, “ Poschim Bongo”  (I know that because I am a Bengali too). Digha is very near to the Bengal and Odisha border. This is surely a place which is well within reach for all people easily.

I hope that after reading this detailed Digha Travel Guide, you imagine yourself visiting typical Indian streets, astounding beaches, and eating phenomenal regional delicacies. Once you’re done the reading, I’m sure you’ll be convinced to travel to Digha and experience something wonderful.

Digha Travel Guide

The beautiful beach town of Digha is situated by the shores of the mighty Bay of Bengal. It truly is a shame that not many know of this enchanting destination. However, this is something that makes it all the more unexplored, serene, and special.

Digha Travel Guide on a Budget: An Overview

Digha is a small town located in the Indian state of West Bengal. Situated in the south of the state and very near to the Bengal-Odisha border, this coastal town is by far the most-visited weekend/mini holiday getaway for most people living in the state.

“3-days long weekend upcoming? No problem, let’s go to Digha!”

“Want to escape from the rush of monotonous city life? Let’s go to Digha!”

“Want to spend a romantic outing with your better half? Go visit Digha!”

“Let us just go to Digha” is all that the travel passionate people care for here. Of course, this applies to the people who are in close proximity to the place unless you really want to discover yourself in a new heaven-like place even if you live far.

Digha Travel Guide

Digha is the perfect destination to enjoy shimmering sunsets and seafood. Some spicy fried prawns along with a chilled beer make for a classic combination by the beach. Furthermore, what makes it even better is the fact that it’s super cheap.

Digha Travel Guide: Best Time to Visit

Being a coastal town, Digha can be extremely humid in the rainy season as well as in summers. So as per the Digha travel guide, the best time to visit it is in the winter or at least nearing the winter months i.e October to February.

Modes of Travel Inter City and Intra City

As per the Digha travel guide, the best mode of travel to Digha is via road. Usually, there are two main connecting roads to the other parts of the state from Digha. One is directly connecting Kolkata, and the other one is actually joined to NH2 near Raniganj via Kharagpur.

If road travel is not what you intend to opt for, then another great alternative is travelling by train. Hats off to the Indian Railways   for connecting us with even the most remote places of the country. It almost seems like it has stitched and kept the country intact.

If this is also not an option for you, then you might consider travelling waterways or maybe even airways. Who knows! Maybe this is the time to finally test your private Chopper. I’m not kidding.

Digha travel guide

View of the landscape outside as seen from the train window. Trains are my personal favourite way of travelling around the country. It’s cheap, comfortable, scenic, environment-friendly, and also often a great way to meet like-minded travelers.

Digha Travel Guide:  Budget Plan for First Time Travelers

This is always the trickiest and most difficult part of the Digha travel guide. Good thing is that Digha is one of the cheapest places in Bengal, so planning a budget for Digha shouldn’t be an issue. You can easily go for a 4 day trip with an expenditure of around Rs.5000 to Rs.8000 per person. The best part is that if you travel in a group, the expenditure becomes almost half of what has been mentioned above.

Breaking Down the Budget for a Nominal Trip

Transportation.

Taking a train from Kolkata to Digha will be in the Price Range of Rs.100 to Rs.1100 per person, depending upon the type of seating you choose. The least priced ticket is for a non-AC second-class seater, and the highest-priced ticket is the AC-Executive Class seater where catering is included, and the first-class service is provided.

You can also opt for bus service from Kolkata to Digha, where the price range of ticket is Rs.125 to Rs.400 per person. The least priced ticket is for Government transportation buses, and the highest priced ticket is by luxury full-AC private semi-sleeper buses.

Of course, there are other places where people can travel to Digha from, but via Kolkata is the most popular route and hence, you should choose this option.

Please make sure that you travel in a way that you directly reach Digha and don’t go to the nearest place first. Else, you’ll waste both money and time.

Digha travel guide

A budget trip can easily be planned to the beach town of Digha. However, this completely depends on your choices. If you’re willing to compromise on some amount of comfort and convenience, a budget-friendly trip to Digha is more than possible.

For a typical 4 night-5 day Digha trip experience, you may look forward to something which will cost you around Rs.3000 and up. This is actually cheap for a beach town. This predictive price is based on lodging for 3 people in a hotel, meaning that it will cost about 1000 INR per person.

Food is very cheap in this town compared to any other beach town in India. You may look forward to spending anything less than   Rs.500 per day per person.

Digha Travel Guide:  Activities and Sight Seeing

Water sports as a total package will cost you around Rs.1000 per person.

Renting a two-wheeler will cost you about Rs.100.

Entry to all the parks will cost around Rs.10 to Rs.50 and an additional cost will be the rides in the park which are optional.

Renting an “electric Toto” for a city tour will cost around Rs.500.

Intra-city transport is also available, and you can share a ride in the toto or a “motored 3-wheeler thela” for a price of Rs.10 per person.

Buying souvenirs and other pretty and attractive stuff will vary from person to person, and it cannot be included in this budget, However, do keep some extra money if you are an extensive shopper.

Digha Travel Guide:  Places for Sight Seeing

The marine aquarium by the zoological survey of india.

Well, this is a place where you will find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful creatures of the sea world. Most of you have only seen them either on TV or on the internet, or maybe physical pictures or images and videos. You might not have ever imagined to see them in real life. On average, you will spend around one hour at this place. You’ll surely enjoy.

Digha travel guide

A silver shaded lobster at the Marine Aquarium. Here, you will find yourself surrounded by the most beautiful creatures of the sea world. Open for the public since 2003, this aquarium also caters to the needs of students, scientists, and researchers.

Chandaneswar Temple

We all know how diverse our culture is, and how religious and spiritual we are. Well, Digha is no different. This place is situated right near the Odisha border, and the interesting part is that you actually have to cross the border in order to visit this temple.

The Science Museum

While most of you might just visit the place for taking a break or doing other activities, the Science Museum is a place worth visiting. This is especially for those who are into science and even people who love acquiring knowledge of various things.

One thing is for sure, I can bet that you will revisit your school days once you enter the museum. Seeing various types of scientific demonstrations, most of which relate to the experiments studied in school was truly nostalgic. The fun part is that you get to participate in those science activities happening around you.

Digha travel guide

Photo mosaic at the science museum. Here, there’s a variety of science activities and experiments you can take part in, which will transport you to your school days. There’s also a 3D science show, a Jurassic live show, quiz contests, seminars, etc.

Digha Travel Guide for the Two  Parks: Wonderland and Amarabati

Both of these parks are equally beautiful and perfect places for short walks. When you want time to move slowly, the Wonderland and Amaravati parks are an absolute must-visit. While the former is slightly smaller compared to the latter, I promise you, it still is a pure thrill. The enormous amounts of joy that you will receive when you come down riding slides will prove to be fun. Also, you can go boating in lakes, spend some time strolling around a mini zoo or take a ride on a beautiful toy train around the park.

Wild Geese

Wild geese as seen at the Wonderland park in Digha. The park is open from 8 am to 8 pm on all days of the week, and is frequently visited by locals and tourists alike. If you do not want to engage in any of the activities, simply read a book or nap under a tree.

Digha Travel Guide for  Old Digha and New Digha Beaches: Which One is Better?

Even though both beaches are good, as a traveler, I’d say that Old Digha Beach is better than New Digha Beach. Also, Old Digha Beach is more comfortable when it comes to seating. There are stone seat places across the beach where you can sit and gaze at the sea. The tides in the Bay of Bengal are very rough so while you enjoy yourself, prevent going too far in the sea.

Digha Travel Guide

Make sure that you don’t venture far into the Old or New Digha beaches. They are beautiful, yet dangerous. Even seasoned and experienced swimmers can be swept out. Also, note that the Old Digha beach is more comfortable when it comes to its seating.

Digha Travel Guide for Where and What to Eat at the Beaches ?

If you’re near the sea, you should most certainly feed yourself with fish and crabs. This is what the Digha travel guide suggests as well. Crabs in Digha are one of the best in the state. So, please go for them. Enjoy the freshest of seafood from almost any of the street food stalls or even restaurants.

After this quick snack, if you feel it’s time for dinner/lunch, there is a great restaurant in Old Digha that sells one of the best Biriyanis in the city. My suggestion will be the famous chicken Biriyani.

To make your meal a perfect combo, end your day with the most soothing and refreshing natural drink of all time, the Coconut water or as they say “ daab/narkel er jol. ”

Digha Travel Guide

When in Digha, make sure you sip on some fresh coconut water. There is nothing as pure as this drink, that comes straight from the coconut trees lining the beaches. A coconut should cost you as little as 30-35 INR. Trust me, it’s totally worth it.

Digha Travel Guide: Safety for Backpackers – Top Tips

The first Digha Travel Guide tip is to not venture deep inside beaches. Not only can you be bitten by sea snakes, but also sink yourself.

The second Digha Travel Guide tip is to spend more time at Old Digha Beach but to stay near New Digha beach only.

Lastly, beware of pickpockets around the town.

Keep these 3 Digha Travel Guide tips in mind at all times and have a fantastic Digha tour.

Now, stop with the imagination, and start making your next trip to Digha. Frankly speaking, don’t even make a plan. Just start because you already got this, so what’s left to plan?

Happy Wayfaring 🙂

However, the town started gaining fame when in 1923, John Frank Smith, an English tourist got so greatly allured by its charm that he started living here and writing about Digha. Digha Beach Kolkata Timings

Located at a distance of 187 kilometers from Kolkata, the city of Joy, in the Eastern Indian state of West Bengal in India, Digha is a small yet popular beach town on the southern border. Digha beach is a flat beach and is one of the widest sea beaches in the world. It is the best weekend getaway destination for locals and its proximity to the Odisha border also means people from Odisha living close to the border town can hop in here during the weekend.

One of the unique features of Digha is that the beach is lined by casuarina plantations all around making the place more alluring. Surprisingly, there aren’t any coconut trees around Digha beach. Since the beach is shallow and flat for around one mile, it makes a safe option for visitors to take a dip or go swimming in the ocean waters.

History about Digha Beach

It was the Britishers who discovered the tiny beach town during the late 18th century at the time when Warren Hastings was the Governor of Bengal. Hastings was so smitten by the beauty and serenity of the place that he had referred Digha beach to ‘Brighton of the East’ in one of his letters to his wife.

Later, around 1923, when the English tourist John Frank Smith decided to settle in Digha after being charmed by the place, he started promoting it through his articles that he had published about this place. That’s how, the quaint beach town, which was known as Beerkul originally, became the quick getaway option for local tourists. It was John Frank Smith who persuaded the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop Digha as a beach resort town.

About Digha Beach

Old Digha Beach : The old Digha Beach is located 2 kilometers from the Digha Railway Station in East Midnapore district of West Bengal. The old Digha beach is famous for the sunrise and sunset views. When in Digha, it is a must to visit the Digha Beach market and you would find numerous souvenir shopping options from home décor items to fashion accessories to clothes, bags, jewelry made out of sea shells and all kinds of sea stones.

Regarding the food, Digha has got enough options for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, restaurants offer delicacies ranging from fast food to local authentic cuisine to multi cuisine.

New Digha Beach : The New Digha Beach is an extension of the Old Digha Beach, created artificially, and is located at a distance of 2 kilometers from Old Beach. The sands of New Digha are soft sands and it is recommended to visit the beach before 9:00 PM for your own safety.

Because of its proximity to the old beach, you may simply walk to the New Digha Beach from the Old Digha beach. This beach is less crowded than old beach, has easy accessibility and larger expanse and is hence preferred by most visitors looking for a secluded and more peaceful place.

Other places to visit in digha.

1. Shankarpur Beach : Known as the virgin beach, Shankarpur beach is located around 15 kilometers from Digha with a few temples and a park at the beach side for locals to come for day picnics. Since fishing is the main livelihood in the area, you would see quite a few fishing boats lined by the beach.

Visitors can climb up to the nearby watchtower to get a 360 degree view of the place.

2. Udaipur Beach : A pristine yet laid back and serene beach in Digha, the Udaipur Beach is favorite among travelers who look for lonely stretches of seashore just to themselves for enjoying long walks or taking a dip in the ocean waters without having to worry about the crowd. The Udaipur beach is located 3 kilometers from Old Digha railway station, between New Digha and Talasari Beaches, on the border of Odisha. This beach too, is dotted with casuarina trees and gives a feel of accommodation at a private beach due to its location.

Since this is a public beach, there are makeshift food stalls available near the beach. These stalls are usually set up by local fishermen who cook their catch of the day and sell the fish. There are boat rides, camel, and horse rides available. Water sports like banana rides, speed boats and All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are also available. The ATV rides cost between INR 50 to 70 for a 3-kilometer ride.

There are accommodation facilities available here too. Tourist huts are run by West Bengal Tourism and OCEANA Tourist Complex separately. There is a parking facility available by the beach. The parking fee is INR 40.

The only flipside of this beach is that it is quite dirty when the tides are low.

3. Talasari Beach : Known to be the last beach of North-eastern coast of India, Talasari beach is located 5- 6 kilometers from Digha, in the Baleswar district of Odisha. The beach is famous for being quaint, squeaky clean, and serene which is inhabited by sand dunes and calm waves. The beach is dotted with palm trees, coconut trees and cashew plantations.

The name Talasari literally translates to rhythm of the palm trees where, ‘Tala’ means palm tree and ‘Sari’ means rhythm. It indicates the rhythm formed by the golden sands and green trees with an occasional dash of red in between formed due to the red crabs which are found in abundance here.

An interesting fact about Talasari Beach is that in addition to being a sea beach, it is also a riverbank for the Subornorekha River which merges into the Bay of Bengal at Talasari. Talasari Beach is known for its fresh seafood.

4. Chandaneshwar Temple : Located in the Baleswar district of neighboring state of Odisha, the Chandaneshwar temple is located near Talasari beach at a distance of 5 – 6 kilometers from Digha. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and sees huge footfall during the occasion of Pana Sankranti, which is also called the Chaitra Mela, which is the first day of the Oriya New Year.

5. Chandpur Beach : Chandpur beach is also one of the beaches that is very rarely visited by tourists and thus makes a great option to visit and experience the peacefulness and serenity of the place. Located around 18 kilometers from Digha, the Chandpur beach is different from the other beaches due to its eroded banks and due to the recession caused by the seawater gradually, in the course of the past few years.

Please note that there aren’t any food stalls near the beach hence, you will need to carry your own food if you wish to spend a full day on the beach. It is recommended to spend at least two hours to experience the place.

5. Amarabati Park : The Amarabati Park is situated less than one kilometer from the New Digha Beach and is famous for its sprawling lush green lawns lined with seasonal flower plants and a lake, giving a wonderland-like look to the park. There is a ropeway ride that pans across the length of the park and one can enjoy the view of the New Digha region and get a bird’s eye view of the park below.

There are boating facilities in the lake by the park. The boating charges are INR 60 per person for a 25-minute boat ride.

6. Digha Science Center : Housing a mini Jurassic Park that resembles the original to the T, the Digha Science Centre was established by National Council of Science Museums with an intention to make science fun through interactive learning experience.

The sound and light show at the 3D theater is an amazing experience to explore the prehistoric Jurassic park. These interactive sessions pique the curiosity of kids and learners and make them urge for more information and they would want to learn how things actually work. There are intergalactic stories to view at the planetarium.

The Digha Science Center is a must visit place for families and kids.

7. Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC) : The Marine Aquarium and Research Centre (MARC) as it is famously known is also the regional center for Zoological Survey of India and is maintained and run by the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Known to be the largest in-built aquarium in Asia, MARC was opened for public access in February 2016 and is located right opposite the Digha hospital. There are 24 huge sized marine tanks, and 8 fresh water tanks equipped with compressed air supply, and light in addition to the water inflow and outflow being regulated in frequent intervals.

The marine species housed here include sea anemones, sharks, rays, lobsters, sea snakes, sea horses, horseshoe crabs, butterfly fish, and a lot many others. There are posters all around the center to raise awareness to conserve marine biodiversity, environment concerns, and explain the necessity for the same.

Students interested in pursuing a career in marine biology and oceanology should visit MARC.

8. Casuarina Forest : This option is for art lovers, photographers or couples who are looking for short escapades. Exploring the casuarina forests right by the beach is an awesome option to get to do something other than the usual tourist activities like water sports and adventure sports.

The casuarina forests are a haven for photographers as it would give a perfect setting for beach and forest.

Miles Russell, 15, becomes youngest to make cut on Korn Ferry Tour

Top-ranked AJGA player opens in 68-66 at LECOM Suncoast Classic

Change Text Size

Miles Russell, 15, isn’t particularly nostalgic. When it was time to switch golf balls midway through the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s LECOM Suncoast Classic, the No. 1-ranked AJGA player considered singling out his first ball as a keepsake. Alas, it made its way into the fray at the bottom of his golf bag.

Yet it stands to reason this week will linger in Russell’s mind forever – and if not, it will be etched in the history books anyway. Russell carded rounds of 68-66 at Lakewood National Golf Club’s Commander course, becoming the youngest player to make the cut in a Korn Ferry Tour event and joining Guan Tian Liang (age 14 / 2013 Masters and Zurich Classic of New Orleans) as the only players under 16 to make a cut on the PGA TOUR or Korn Ferry Tour, on record (since 1983). Russell surpasses the Korn Ferry Tour mark previously set by Gipper Finau (16 years, 20 days) at the 2006 Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank. Russell set the new mark at 15 years, 5 months, 18 days.

"That's a cool one for me," Russell said. "It's a cool record, and hopefully it will get broken."

This week marked Russell’s PGA TOUR-sanctioned debut, competing on a sponsor exemption, and he has quickly shown that he belongs. After a 3-under 68 in Thursday’s opening round, Russell had one stroke of cushion on the projected cut line, and he further separated himself with two eagles on the front nine Friday – coming at the 282-yard, par-4 fourth and 563-yard, par-5 ninth. He added birdies at Nos. 10 and 11, fell back with a bogey at the par-3 13th but finished with five straight pars to end three strokes inside the cut line.

He'll enter the weekend in a share of 26th place at 8-under 134, six back of 36-hole leader Brandon Crick.

"I knew it was going to be a good test to see where I am against some of the best," Russell said. "It's definitely something I'll remember even when times will get hard; I'll remember it when that happens and go with the flow."

In the context of Russell’s robust list of junior accomplishments, this feat should come as no surprise. Last fall, he became the youngest winner of the AJGA Boys Junior Player of the Year award, surpassing Tiger Woods, his year including a seven-stroke victory at the Junior PGA Championship and a three-shot win at the Junior PLAYERS (which included a second-round 66 at TPC Sawgrass’ PLAYERS Stadium Course).

Although he’s a high school freshman, navigating classes like Earth science and geometry, Russell has carried himself like a pro this week in his home state of Florida (Lakewood National, just outside Bradenton, is located roughly four hours from his hometown of Jacksonville Beach.) Perhaps diminutive in nature for now, the left-hander already generates swing speed that compares to the average TOUR pro and is still growing – suggesting he could become one of the game’s longer hitters in years to come. Combine that with a creative short game, high golf IQ and inquisitive mind – “he’s like a sponge,” said his longtime swing and skills coach Ramon Bescansa – and a successful pro career could be in his future.

Not that he’s taking it for granted. Between shots in a Tuesday practice round at Lakewood National, Russell expressed appreciation for this week’s opportunity and the chance to work toward a career as a professional golfer overall.

“I’ve always wanted to be able to do it," Russell said Tuesday of eventually pursuing professional golf. "To have the chance to do it would be even cooler, and then to be able to do it would be awesome. I think it would just be cool to do something I love, and there’s not much more I love than this.”

The top 25 finishers and ties at the LECOM (not otherwise exempt) will gain access to next week’s Veritex Bank Championship in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Russell is eligible for this perk, but he’s not eligible to earn non-member Korn Ferry Tour points toward Special Temporary Membership, as the minimum age for Korn Ferry Tour membership is 18.

For now, Russell has secured two more competitive rounds against the pros this weekend, having authored a slice of Korn Ferry Tour history.

"I'm kind of speechless," Russell said Friday. "The goal was to make the cut and we made it, so we'll see where the weekend goes.

"It's a cool record to break. I don't know how much longer ... people are getting so good, so young. It could hold out for a week, you never know, but it's pretty cool right now."

Dubai’s Extraordinary Flooding: Here’s What to Know

Images of a saturated desert metropolis startled the world, prompting talk of cloud seeding, climate change and designing cities for intensified weather.

  • Share full article

A dozen or so cars, buses and trucks sit in axle-deep water on a wide, flooded highway.

By Raymond Zhong

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions have stunned the world this week. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a freak event — forecasters anticipated the storms several days out and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual. Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on Tuesday was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . But parts of the nation had experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms just last month.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every corner of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried across the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this week’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets this week that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times on Thursday, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t immediately have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

Omnia Al Desoukie contributed reporting.
