15 Best Places To Visit In Dirang Arunachal

Places to visit in Dirang

If you are looking for top tourist places to visit in Dirang, you will not find many. I want to begin this post with this disclaimer because Dirang is one of the hidden gems in Arunachal(I hope it remains that way for a long time). Most travelers make a quick stop or pass through this quaint town on their way to Tawang or Bomdilla, or possibly spend a few hours.

But I beg to differ here because Dirang is one of the fantastic places in Arunachal you should not miss. I was ready to spend a month or more in this town as I fell in love with this tiny hamlet(which did not materialize at that time).

Still, I am grateful that I witnessed this gorgeous small town thanks to my trip with Rajiv, the founder of the excellent North East India Explorers, which arranged my Arunachal trip.

How does a beautiful river surrounded by lush mountains, kiwi orchids, apples and orange farms, incredible viewpoints to enjoy 360-degree of the Himalayas, gorgeous monasteries, and enough places to make you feel the peace sound? Are you nodding your head for a yes? Then make sure to remember that you will fall in love with Dirang as you set foot.

This hamlet of the Monpa tribe is blessed with all these things and much more if you want to go off the touristy radar. Read this post to know all about the best places to visit in Dirang and the offbeat things to do, which will convince you to add Dirang to your itinerary if you are not yet convinced!

TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN DIRANG

Whether you are a nature lover, adventurous soul or a seeker of spiritual journeys, or a photographer, Dirang, a small town located on the banks of Dirang Chu River, lying at the foothills of the snow-clad Eastern Himalaya in West Kameng district in Arunachal, is the ideal place to find all these.

It is on the way to Tawang and is about 40 away from Bomdilla, the district headquarter of West Kameng. Let’s check out the top Dirang attractions in this list first.

Check out the Famous Dirang Dzong

Dirang Dzong, or Fort, located at the centre of the town, is one of the famous places to visit in Dirang. It is situated between Sangti and Dirang town on the banks of the Dirang river atop a hill, offering splendid views of the river and the mountain valleys.

This citadel was built initially in the 17th-century. Although not many artefacts are available to confirm, it is believed that the Dirang Dzong was used by the Britishers as a prison cell during the World Wars and later during the Vietnam War.

The Dzong is known for its fantastic architecture and its rich history. Many old homes, some even dating to over 500 years, can be found here.

These old houses were built to sustain any hostile conditions, including invasions and extreme weather conditions, common in this part of Arunachal.

The wooden gate at the entrance is beautifully decorated in the Tibetan style, and the historic village is a multi-storeys structure with fortified stone roofs coupled with wooden logs.

The inhabitants in these traditional hamlets are from the Monpa community, who are in charge of looking after the historical artefacts of the village.

Swim in dirang chu river.

You will love your time in Dirang River no matter what you choose.

Visit a Weaver’s Home

I had the chance to visit the home of a very experienced weaver as Rajiv of North East Explorers was kind enough to show me some glimpses of local lives.

That’s how I learned that the people in Dirang are very good at curating textiles and have extensive equipment set up in their homes to do so.

dirang tourist places images

They make things for personal uses, but textile manufacturing, sales, and export is an important small-scale business run mostly by women in Dirang.

You will get to enter a traditional home, get peeks of how they create beautiful things, and of course, you can bring a few of their lovely items back home by buying their woollen wear and traditional clothes.

Take Tours of the Fruit Farms In Dirang

Dirang is one of the most fertile places in Arunachal, like many of its towns and villages. One of the offbeat things to do in Dirang is planning tours of the kiwi farms, apple and orange orchids which are very easy to spot.

Dirang Arunachal Pradesh

You can stroll through the pretty farms, get to know about their cultivation, go plucking, and of course, taste the delicious fruits. Apart from getting to know about fruit farming, locals will love sharing their experiences, and you can savour the fruits while enjoying the beautiful views.

Dirang is one of the hotspots for bird watching in Arunachal, and its splendid location amidst the gorgeous mountains and fertile valleys means that no matter what time of the year you visit Dirang, you will spot some unique and beautiful birds that migrate or are local species dwelling in the hills and the faraway forested mountains.

Get on the village’s panoramic trails to spot some fantastic species like white-throated redstarts, fire-tailed sunbirds, and Rufous-bellied birds usually spotted around sunrise and early morning hours.

If you plan a Dirang trip during November and December, head to Sangti valley to watch the winter unique migratory birds – the Black Necked Cranes that fly for thousands of miles from upper regions of China to Bhutan and Arunachal every year.

Plan Treks in and Around Dirang

There is no shortage of trails and viewpoints when you are in Dirang for some adventure. If you are fond of hiking as I do, you can explore the many gravel paths in the hills leading to incredible viewpoints up the mountains overlooking the valley.

If you want to do multiple-day hikes, you can also visit a few hot springs and lakes. But the best hikes are not only not farther, but easier for any visitor to enjoy.

You will be rewarded with some of the beautiful panoramas, so make sure you make a climb or two when in Dirang.

Check out the Sheep Farm

Along with yaks, the other animal that you will constantly encounter when wandering in Dirang is the sheep. The herds will block the road for sure, which is fun.

But if you want to know a bit about how they are farmed, check out some farms in Sangti where you can tour and witness the rearing and culture of sheep.

Stroll around Dirang Market

Whether you want to do people watching or do some shopping in Dirang or check out the small shops and taste delicious food in the local eateries, you can do so best while taking walks through the market area in central Dirang.

HOW TO REACH DIRANG

Depending on where you plan to travel from, your time, budget, and other preferences, you can choose between these ways to reach Dirang in Arunachal.

Note that no matter how you choose to travel, you will need at least two days to arrive and head back(unless you stay close). So ensure to keep this in mind while planning your Dirang trip.

Dirang By Air

If you are flying from abroad, there are two international airports that you can access – Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, Assam, which is the closest airport.

And the other is the Kolkata International Airport, much further, but well connected to many international cities.

If you arrive in India at any major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, you can fly to Guwahati. The distance between Guwahati to Dirang is 350 km. It takes around 8 to 9 hours to drive from Guhawati to Dirang.

The small town of Tezpur in Assam is the nearest railway station to reach Dirang. The distance between Tezpur and Dirang is 190 km, and you can book a cab from the station that takes about 6 to 7 hours to get to Dirang from Tezpur.

By Road

One of the convenient ways to cover Dirang is to plan a road trip like I did, to explore Arunachal with North East Explorers. You can solve the hassle of transport, food, accommodations and plan for sightseeing, and you will be able to make the most of your time.

Your trip starts from Guhawati in Assam, and from there, you can customise the places and things to do according to your preferences. Neat, right?

You can rent a car in Tawang or Guhawati, Bomdilla, or Tezpur, the nearest bigger towns from where you can arrive in Dirang.

Another fantastic thing about traveling by road is the splendid landscapes that blow your mind away, the local food, and the people’s warmth on your journey.

Dirang is also connected to other towns through Arunachal Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus services with smaller villages Bhalukpong, Tezpur, Itanagar, Guwahati in Assam, and Shillong in Meghalaya.

The upside of the buses is their meagre prices, but the downsides are the very limited buses running every day. If you can plan it right, you can backpack via bus.

7 Awesome Things to Do in Dirang (2024) – India’s Heaven on Earth!

Dirang was my little heaven on Earth. In the whole of Arunachal Pradesh, which is in North East India, I think this little village was my favourite of all.

I recently went on a tour with Holiday Scout and was quite literally introduced to paradise.

It was the beautiful tall mountains, the fresh flowing rivers, the traditional houses, and the clean fresh air.

Arunachal Pradesh, including Dirang, isn’t a place that draws much tourism yet. I think this needs to change.

It’s by far one of the most beautiful states in India and has many gems in store.

Here are the 7 awesome things to do in Dirang!

dirang things to do

Top things to do in Dirang

1. take a picture perfect walk.

In my opinion, there is nothing better than taking a walk in nature. It’s so refreshing for the soul and is something that you can easily take for granted (especially as I used to live in the overly polluted capital city of Delhi!).

Dirang was a picture-perfect village. It provided easy strolls, but they would all blow you away with their beauty.

My personal favourite  is the one towards the old monastery, Khastung Gompa.

From here you can get stunning panoramic views of the whole place.

Exploring this place on foot is easily the most exciting. You will come across ancient houses, bridges laced with Himalayan flags, wildlife, and prayer wheels. There’s a surprise around every corner.

2. Visit Khastung Gompa

I’ve always thought that temples with history have the best stories to tell and in Dirang, there’s an ancient Buddhist gem.

Khastung Gompa is located high above the village. It’s over 500 years old, claiming the title of the oldest monastery in Arunachal Pradesh.

What I loved about this monastery was seeing all the ancient prayer wheels.

Did you know that they used to be made out of layers of leather? Inside, they would print Buddhist scriptures.

It’s amazing learning about old traditions and how they still are alive today!

Nowadays Buddhist monks make pilgrimages here. It’s worth checking out the amazing entrance gate and the hidden secrets on the ceiling.

3. Cool down by the Dirang Chu river

After you’ve taken a stroll around, you might want to cool down and dip your feet in the Dirang Chu river.

When I visited in December, the water was absolutely freezing! Like, turn your feet blue freezing. But, it was needed after the weather was surprisingly hot that day.

The Dirang Chu river originates and travels all the way from Tawang. But, it’s still as fresh and clear as it was from the source.

It was a beautiful place to relax and could act as an awesome picnic spot. Take an hour out to listen to the water and enjoy the mountain views.

4. Head to Sangti valley

Located around 12km out of the village (but around 40 mins by car), Sangti is another Shanti retreat into nature.

As soon as we arrived, we followed a herd of sheep who were heading back into their stable to get fed.

It was so fun watching the hungry little guys sprint in for dinner time!

We met some of the local farmers who were also monitoring the sheep. They were making sure they have well looked after.

I only realised then that I hardly see many sheep in India. It’s usually goats.

I found out that a lot of these breeds were imported from all over India and also from countries like Russia.

What I loved is seeing all the symmetry in the pine trees on the hills over the valley.

Looking down on the village and exploring all the fields speckled with wildflowers was like something you could only imagine.

5. Meet the locals and be invited to drink tea!

I don’t think I’ve ever been invited in for so much tea as I was here. I loved how friendly the Monpa people were in Dirang.

Everyone was curious to know you and talk to you. They would want to find out where you were from and what you thought of the village.

It was like being welcomed in as family and it made me think a lot about the way we greet strangers in the West.

Would I invite a random stranger into my house for tea?

Probably not. But why?

India has always been a place that has blown me away with its hospitality but this was on another level.

dirang things to do

My favourite was being invited in for some of the local spirits at 11 am (hic). It’s heated up to keep you warm.

Also, being invited in for chai with a kind lady. I met two of her beautiful dogs who would do nothing but bark at people as they walked past!

dirang things to do

I loved seeing the traditional weaving, the busy kitchens, the farming houses, and the cheeky kids playing in the alleyways.

All these moments really touched my heart. So, don’t be shy!

If someone invites you into their home, take the offer with open hands. It’s not a guarantee, but I think you’ll be asked by the kind people of Dirang at least once.

6. See Thubsung Dhargyeling Monastery at sunrise

This monastery was built in April 2017 and was inaugurated by his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama himself.

It’s a temple and learning institute of Tibetan Buddhism by monks and members of the Buddhist faith.

The name Thupsung Dhargye Ling was given by the Dalai Lama and means: “Place of Flourishing of the Buddha’s Speech”.

Although it didn’t have as much charm as the old monastery (I have a thing for historic buildings), this one was so bright, colourful, and had that fresh new feel.

Dirang used to be a region of Tibet. Since China’s suzerainty of Tibet, many Tibetan refugees have fled to Dirang.

This monastery now acts as a hub for Tibetan culture and Buddhist teachings to ensure they stay alive for future generations.

To read more about this issue in Tibet and the Dalai Lama’s new home in India, see here.

dirang things to do

The best time to visit this monastery is at sunrise. This is when the monks perform their morning prayers.

Unfortunately, when we visited, the prayers were cancelled due to a ceremony happening later that day. But, it’s supposed to be a beautiful experience.

Prayer starts at 6 am in the morning. Top tip  – Bring thick socks as the monasteries, and their marble floors, are freezing!

7. Explore Dirang Dzong

Another name for Dirang is Dirang Dzong. Dzong means jail and refers to the name of the fort/jail located within the center of the village.

The fort has an interesting history surrounding it. Built in the 17th century, it was first used as a fort to protect the village from neighbouring states.

Nowadays, these are used as houses for the Monpa people. I had the pleasure of being invited inside and meeting the families!

It’s definitely worth exploring and getting wonderfully lost in this part of town.

You’ll find the architecture is so quaint. The history talks to you through the walls.

On my visit, I stayed in a beautiful homestay called Dirang Cottage.

It is run by the loveliest family, has comfy warm beds, and is impeccably clean. The lady who runs it, who I call ‘Auntie’, was such a kind soul.

My favourite Dirang photos

Dirang was my little slice of paradise and is a place I would definitely head back to. But, I wouldn’t go back for a few days, I’d try to stay for a few weeks!

This village is definitely worth a stop off for the night on the Tawang circuit.

Don’t skip it, you’ll be really missing out. To finish, if there weren’t enough photos already, here’s some more wanderlust :P

Excellent info but I'm struggling to understand the geography of Dirang. I read that there's an Old and a New Dirang. Is this the case and is it easy to move between the two?

Sophie Pearce

Monday 14th of October 2019

Hi Claire, There is an old and new part of Dirang. The main places you'll want to visit are in Old Dirang. The New Monastery is worth a visit but you will need a car to access it. there isn't any rickshaws but you can take a sharing cab to the new monastery. I'm actually heading to Dirang in a few days so I can find out more for you :) Sophie x

Sunday 13th of January 2019

yes i like it

Thanks again, Chandra

Really its well described, but needs more travel aid write up for catching mode of travel, nearest railway station or Airport, weather report and best period to travel Dirang

Thank you Chandra, I totally agree. I will make some additions to this post and provide more information. The best way to reach Dirang is by public Sumo jeep. These you can catch from Tezpur/Bomdilla for around 400 rupees one way. There are no railway stations in Arunachal Pradesh as it's in the Himalayas. The nearest large Airports would be Dibrugarh and Tezpur in Assam. There are smaller airports in Arunachal Pradesh in Tezu and Itanagar but maybe costly. The weather, in peak season, is freezing as it's 4,900ft from sea level. I would say the best time is from October - March in Winter. But expect snow and crossing the Sela Pass is unpredictable. I will make some changes to this blog post, Thanks for the nudge :) Sophie x

The Best Places to visit in Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh

12 mar the best places to visit in dirang, arunachal pradesh.

Dirang is not a place people look forward to spending time in. While it is a lovely small town, it is usually thought more of as a stopover for an overnight stay on the way to Tawang. But there are quite a few places to visit in Dirang. Some of us choose to visit, and some don’t.

I stopped at Dirang both while going towards Tawang and while returning too. Although I think Bomdila makes a better stop while returning back since you cover more distance. Anyway, I had a chance to explore a little more of Dirang town and I wanted to share that.

So here is more on Dirang along with some of the places you can visit in Dirang.

If you are in a hurry to reach Tawang, then maybe not. But if you plan to travel slowly and wish to explore more of the West Kamaeng region, you can make a longer stay in Dirang and head out to the town and some of the areas nearby.

For the ones who love the countryside, you can take day trips to Lubrang and Sangti village which are like 30 mins detours from Dirang. The valleys with views of lazy paddy fields, fruit orchards and some tributaries of the Dirang river make some of the most picturesque views on this route.

Apart from that, I found Dirang less touristy, more peaceful and worth spending more time in. Also, since it is at a lower altitude, you can still hike in the area without extreme discomfort and lack of oxygen.

How to reach Dirang

Like most other places in this route in Arunachal, you can only reach Dirang by road. You can either take a taxi or private transportation from Guwahati or Tezpur or use public transportation.

Public transportation is not too frequent but it is still available. You can take a bus/shared sumo from Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati or from ASTC stand in Tezpur. The journey from Guwahati can take upto 10 hours and around 8 hours from Tezpur. This is also the most affordable way to travel.

If you are fond of riding, you can also explore a bike trip on this route. But there are definitely a lot of things to consider. Riding in a group with an experienced tour guide can make your journey way more comfortable.

Check out our blog article where I have shared much more details on how to reach Dirang on the way to Tawang .

Where to Stay in Dirang

Dirang has several options for hotels. Some of them can be booked online, while others are available on the spot only. During the peak season, the hotels are easily sold out and are booked ahead by tour operators due to heavy tourist footfalls. So if you find the town booked online, don’t rely on the chance to get a room on the spot.

We stayed in two separate hotels on our way to and back from Tawang – Hotel Pemaling and Wangdi Homestay (right next to the river). Both of them were the best we could find in town. And I think both of them were quite nice and comfortable.

Room at Pemaling Hotel

Here are other popular hotels/homestays that you can stay in Dirang:

Pemaling Lords Inn

Dirang Buddha Hotel

Oshin Homestay

If you want to experience something different, you can also board a room in Dirang Monastery . Apart from the lovely Tibetan architecture, the view of the town from the monastery is fantastic.

Things to do in Dirang

1. thupsung dhargye monastery.

Thupsung Dhargye Ling or Dirang Monastery is the new shining place in the town, a holy place founded by the 14th Dalai Lama himself, and today a major tourist attraction. He also named this place that  translates to “Place of Flourishing of the Buddha’s Speech”

The foundation ceremony in 2017 was a large-scale event with several teaching sessions and people gathered from hundreds of miles around. It is also a learning institute for Tibetan Buddhism for monks and people in the area.

The monastery is complete now and is built on high grounds at a place where you can see it from most of Dirang. On the other hand, you can also see most of Dirang from there too. The place itself is astounding. Built in the traditional Tibetan style, it sparkles in bright red and golden colours.

There are large chortens outside the main buildings and the main hall is decorated with beautiful murals and these large cylindrical garments hanging from the ceiling (I think they are called the Chukhor). The prayer halls were quiet and I couldn’t see any monks around. One strangely nice thing I find about Buddhist monasteries is they are usually unmanned and they trust the visitors to keep the decorum.

You can easily spend an hour here. Wear some warm socks since you need to leave your shoes outside and the marble floors are freezing cold most of the time.

P.S. -> The monastery also has boarding facilities, so you can stay in the room here. The rooms are minimally furnished but you will find a cosy bed with blankets and good food on order.

2. Kalachakra Gompa

A less visited but important Gompa is located down in the valley in the middle of Dirang town knowns as the Kalachakra Gompa. Kalachakra (The Wheel of Time) is a series of texts and teachings from Indian and Tibetan Buddhism with its own philosophy on worldly practices.

I am assuming that this gompa was termed ‘Kalachakra Gompa’ after the 14th Dalai Lama initiated a Kalachakra ceremony here in Dirang in 1983. People say the gompa goes back 500 years. But if you know more, let us know in the comments.

It’s a nice little place that was recently renovated with the money collected by the community and by their collective efforts. We asked the local monk if we can see its main hall after its closing hours in the evening and it was nice to let us in and take some photos. We also met a few locals hanging around the area and enjoying the evening.

3. Dirang Dzong

If you are unaware of Dzongs, a Dzong (pronounced as Zong) is a structure that Tibetan rulers built in each district in the area they ruled that worked both as an administrative place and also had a religious sanctum. You will find Dzongs, large and small, across all of Bhutan, some parts of Arunachal, Sikkim, Tibet and the Leh area.

The Dzong in Dirang is around 400 years old. You cannot really spot it from the road and have to take this conspicuous staircase to reach it. And while you can still see the massive structure, a lot of it is crumbling inside. Luckily, the restoration work is in progress.

There are a few small prayer areas and people have settled in the area with their houses made in typical brick and wood style. We found some kids curious and running around. There is also a lovely view of the valley right behind it.

It is an important landmark and is around 5 km from Dirang town. So you can walk to it if you are in the mood for a long walk and have a lot of time.

Store stairways taking to Dirang Dzong

4. Dirang Hot Springs

Slightly north of the city, there are a couple of hot springs from Dirang on the way to Tawang. You can see the sign on the road and then need to climb down some steps to reach the hot springs that sit near the Dirang River.

There is two separate square container kind of structures painted in bright Tibetan colours. There are a few washrooms on the side to wash before and after you take a dip. The hot springs are communal and you may find a few people and kids enjoying themselves. People say that water has healing properties. The view of the river on the other side is pretty great too.

I found one hot spring filled with debris. Also, there were quite a few pieces of plastic waste lying in the area. So I think it may need additional care in terms of cleanliness. But again, things may change when you visit. I cannot say if you should carry your swimsuit.

There are no timings or charges to visit or even to use the hot springs.

5. Dirang Chu River

I know it sounds kind of obvious, but you may not be able to visit or spend some time if you are staying at the place high up on the hillside. If you have some time go ahead and spend some time by the river. It is easily accessible but you will have to walk down to the town.

We stayed at Wandi Guesthouse and we could see the river right behind our home from the windows and the balcony. I think things could get pretty scary during the monsoons and stormy weather though.

Dirang River changes its name as it goes through different areas in Arunachal and as it pours into Kameng river down south. It is mostly fed by the snow and glaciers from the higher-altitude mountains inside Arunachal.

6. Sangti Valley

Sangti Valley was one of my favourite places not just in Dirang my on my whole Arunachal trip to Tawang. It is around 14 km from Dirang town and you will need a private vehicle (a car or motorbike to be specific) to reach here. Unless you want to hitchhike.

The valley is just gorgeous and you will see a large expanse of paddy fields with mountains in the background as you enter. We travelled all the way to an iron bridge on a stream that was quite far into the valley. You can just walk around and enjoy the freshness.

As we came back we stopped at a kiwi orchard right next to a homestay. The kiwis were already plucked but we could still spot some flower buds. If you wish, you can also stay at a homestay in this area. I bet it will be amazing.

There is also a sheep farm as you enter the valley on your left side. You can spot it with black-coloured huts but it may or may not be open at the time. Explore the place if it is open.

Posing for photos with beautiful green paddy fields

Lubrang is a small nomadic village around 30 km from Dirang that will take you to some of the most remote landscapes of Arunachal. It is where a group of people live who move to this village during the colder months and move to the highlands, near the Tibet border during the summer season.

The most common occupation of people here is yak rearing and you will find a herd of yaks grazing in the area. They are also the reason that people relocate terrains to give access to suitable weather conditions for yaks. Their owners milk these yaks, make cheese (called Churpa) and sell them in the market in exchange for other products or money.

The people are the most fun part of the journey. Ask around people in Dirang to get you a guide or a local in Lubrang who can take you around or tell you about their culture. The views of the way just add to the experience.

Lubrang Village

8. Mandala Top

Mandala top is another less-visited place near Dirang on the Tawang route. It is an open-air structure with 108 rectangular stupas inscribed with ‘Om Mani Padme Hum’ built around a central figure that is still in construction.

The top view shows a near-circular pattern and the stupas are perfectly placed around the centre with a lot of prayer flags around them. Kind of reminds me of Dochula Pass.

It is also at a considerable height. Mandala Top is at around 7,600ft approximately 32 km from Dirang which takes a full one-hour drive. The ride will be pretty steep if you plan to ride on a motorbike.

You probably won’t find many tourists here. Due to the height, the place gives spectacular views of the surroundings and maybe even Gorichen Mountain peak, the highest peak in Arunachal . There is also a lodge here in case you want to spend more time.

Try to reach this place in the first half of the day since the weather is more probable to deteriorate by the second half. You may find snow here too. Pack some warm clothes since it is much colder than Dirang.

9. National Research Center on Yak

A unique place, National Research Center on Yak is what it says. It is a small centre and the first of its kind. The research centre focuses on the husbandry and rearing of yaks, a very important cattle here. In fact, the first test-tube yak baby was made in the laboratory here.

They aim to research cost-effective technology for the socio-economic upliftment of the highland farmers of this region. And you can find a lot of information on yak types, breeding and conservation. You can find a lot of products made of yak hair.

They also have their own farm at Nyikamadung. Therefore, you can find things like yak cheese called Churpa from there at a very reasonable price. Only cards are accepted for payment here.

10. Namshu Village

Another quaint village near Dirang lies 14km before you enter Dirang town. You can access the town from the road that leads to Dirang but then you have to walk down to go around the village. It is a sweet little place with views of paddy fields from several viewpoints.

There are two small monasteries that you can visit inside the village too – The Ritshow Gompa and the Trashi Rabten Gompa. The latter one is quite unique since it is two-storeyed and the main Buddha statue is so large that you can see only their feet from the ground floor and the face from the first floor.

Laze around the place, walk inside the village and drink some butter tea with the locals. Enjoy your day in peace here.

11. Thembang Village

This is another place that you can put on your list if you have more time in Dirang and wish to explore the rural highland culture. Thembang village has an ancient history. In fact, according to some prehistoric excavations here, people believe that the roots of this village date back to the 1st century.

But what you can actually see are the remnants of a dzong or a fortress kind of place with two entrances and boundaries around the village. This structure dates back to the 12th century AD. It is now a nominee of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

You can visit the small village and its inhabitants and also check out the monastery where a lot of ancient stone blocks and carvings have been preserved. The village is also the base camp for the treks starting with Gorichen Peak Trek and the Bailey Trail.

If you are travelling back from Dirang to Guwahati, you can also consider stopping at Kaziranga National Park for a couple of days and enjoy a jungle safari ride.

Places to Visit and Things to do in Dirang Valley

Let us now explore the gems of Dirang valley and discover its beauty and tranquility.

Meditate at Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang (Dirang Gompa)

The first of the things to do in Dirang, has ot be a visit to the TDL Gompa. Thupsung Dhargye Ling Gompa ( TDL monastery, as it is also called by tourists) is quite new when compared with other gompas in this area. Thupsung Dhargye Ling is a temple and learning institute for the study of Tibetan Buddhism for monks and others who are interested.

Prayer hall or Dukhang Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang (Dirang Gompa) TDL Monastery

TDL Gompa is also the biggest Gompa in Dirang region. Take some time out to unwind and relax with a visit to Dirang Monastery. Located atop a hill overlooking the picturesque Dirang town, this ancient monastery is home to many calming prayer sessions for devotees and visitors.

The colorful Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery, was consecrated in the year 2017 by none other than the current 14th Dalai Lama. This monastery was named so by the Dalai Lama which is said to mean “place of the flourish of the Buddha’s speech”.  Thanks to Holiday Scouts, we even got to see the private chambers of the Dalai Lama, who stayed there during the inauguration and uses them as and when he visits Dirang.

The ambience is peaceful and most conducive for meditation. There are a few well-appointed rooms for anyone who wishes to stay at the monastery.

Visit Khastung Monastery

Khastung monastery, also known as Khastong Monastery or Khasto Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery in Dirang Valley, and is one of the oldest Monastery of Arunachal Pradesh. Probably only Urgelling Monastery is older. It is in Dirang Basti (Dirang Village) and perched atop a hill. It is said to be even older than Tawang Monastery. Dirang Basti is about 4 KM from Dirang Town.

Khastung Gompa dedicated to Tara things to do in dirang

Khastung Monastery is one of the very few Gompas dedicated to Jetsun Dölma or Tara, worshipped for peace, love and compassion (the female Bodhisattva in Tibetan Buddhism, perhaps equivalent to Shakti or Lakshmi depending on how she is depicted).

You can get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding mountains, settlements along Dirang River and the silvery winding river itself.

Learn to Cook and Savour Monpa Style Momos

There are a few households where one can learn to cook and eat awesome momos or other Monpa dishes. Momos are similar to dumplings. The experience, I am told, increases multifold, if you are a non-vegetarian. My own experience, I felt, was nothing less, even as a vegetarian. The chef, the lady of the house, knew exactly what to mix in the filling to make the momos finger licking good. The ones I made looked like a cross between a duck and a turtle! 😀 Once steamed it tasted awesome.

Later you may wash it down with a warm ara (a local alcohol brewed from millets or corn) or with butter tea or both!

This lady was also an expert weaver and showed us some of her creations. She also demonstrated how to wear a Shingka, Monpas women’s traditional dress, in a minute!

Take a trip to Dirang Dzong

A visit to Dirang Dzong, a fort-like structure built in the traditional Tibetan style is a must. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and is adjacent to Dirang Basti which is on the other side of the highway.

Dirang Dzong fort like entrance things to do in dirang

In the Tibetan language, Dzong means a fort and Dirang Dzong is believed to have been built about 300 to 400 years back depending on who you talk to.  It is also believed that this village has been inhabited for the last 900 years or so. There does not seem to be many authentic historical sources on this.

However, that does not take away the charm of this fortified village. The entrance is via a stone staircase, with two bastion-like structures on either side.

Many houses are made of stone and look very old. There is even a Gompa inside this settlement. We were greeted by a bunch of kids who were enacting some scene or the other from Bollywood movies. 😊

It is said that the dzong was also used as barracks and later as a prison too. It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to explore Dirang Dzong and as such, is not to be missed.

Destress on the banks of Dirang River (Dirang Chu)

Things to do in Dirang cannot be complete without wetting your feet at the river. If you are like me then this would be your most important activity to kickstart the day! 😊

My days here started very early. At the crack of dawn, I would saunter down to the banks of Dirang Chu river with my camera and spend an hour or so. The perpetual sounds of water flowing has an unbelievable therapeutic effect! If I did not have other things to do, I would have spent hours walking along the river or sitting on the rocks.

Clear day at Dirang Valley at Dirang Chu river

I loved to do the same in the evening too, to unwind and let the tiredness be blown away.

There are more places to visit within a short distance from Dirang town.

Mandala Top Dirang

Exploring the picturesque Dirang region, Arunachal Pradesh, is an enchanting experience by itself, and no trip to this region is complete without a visit to the magical Mandala Top. This elevated summit at an altitude of over 3000 Meters, is home to 108 Buddhist stupas or manes, funded and built by Monpa families from this region.

Dirang Mandala top 108 Mane foggy day

It is situated about 30 km away from the town of Dirang. Referred also as Mane, the cuboidal structures have a significant spiritual importance in Buddhism. The people of Dirang believe that the Mane installations at Mandala Hill protect them from evil. Enjoy the breathtaking views from the top. Unfortunately for us, the place was covered in fog and the weather was quite cold.

Mandala Top is a new attraction for tourists. However, this has been a haven for bird watchers for years. Some of the rare birds have been sighted here.

Dirang Mandala top 108 Mane foggy day

Every year, in November, this place bustles with musicians and music lovers during the 108 Mane Mandala Music Festival.

The drive to Mandala Top is even more mesmerizing after the monsoons and when there is no snowfall.

Have a Riverside Picnic at Sangti Valley

If  ‘spectacularest’ was a word, then I would have used it to describe Sangti Valley. It is about 13 KM from Dirang Town along Sangti River, one of the tributaries of Dirang River.  This also is one of the highlights of the things to do in Dirang.

Sangti Valley Dirang Chu Arunachal Pradesh

The beauty of the valley must be seen to be believed. Here is our detailed article on Sangti Valley Riverside Picnic.

Visit the Sheep Research Center at Sangti

The Sheep research centre is on the way to Sangti Valley Picnic Spot and one can have real ice-breaking sessions with hundreds of sheep when you mingle with them. Don’t forget! The best view of Sangti valley is from the Sheep Farm. Here is our article on the Sangti Valley Sheep Farm.

Chug Valley

Chug valley is about 12 KM from Dirang Town and is parallel to Sangti Valley on the other side of a high mountain. I was told that during flowering season, (October – November), the whole valley gets converted into a carpet of rhododendrons and cosmos flowers (also knowns as I love you flowers) of various hues.

Vasudevan R at a bridge at Chug Valley

The Chug village is inhabited by the people of Monpa tribe. We got invited to one of the households to try their Ara, butter tea and snacks. The people, though friendly, are quite shy of cameras, especially the women folk. It is always best to ask before taking photos.

More Places to visit and things to do in and around Dirang Valley

There are a lot more things to do and places to see in and around Dirang valley which we could not experience for want of time. They are,

  • There are many fruit orchards around Dirang Valley growing apples, persimmons, kiwis etc.

The fields are all sprinkled with wildflowers and don’t be surprised if you get invited over by the locals-the Monpa Tribe for some tea! The Sangti Valley is encompassed with an incredible mountain range and beautiful weather with chances of light drizzle or snow fall. Do you want to escape to a place where the hills are filled with orange orchards and kiwi plantations? Do you want to delve into a world of gompas and sprawling meadows? Do you want to be lulled by the wind as you pass by the fluttering Buddhist flags along the mountain road? If yes, then Dirang is the place to be. Lying in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, Dirang is a small quaint town in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. It stands on the way to Tawang and is 42.2 km away from Bomdilla, the district headquarter of West Kameng. Many suggest that due to the long journey to Tawang, one can visit Bomdilla or Dirang as a stopover for the night. We suggest otherwise. We suggest that you opt for a full trip around Dirang and its surrounding areas. The reason? Let’s check it out.

Dirang is soothingly scenic and picturesque. Wherever you look, you will find steep hills with monasteries and Buddhist flags fluttering in unison. There are also meadows with cattle, yak and horses and the majestic Dirang Chu River meandering through it. Let’s have a glimpse of the best places to visit in and around Dirang.

1. Kalachakra Gompa

It is the oldest monastery that lies in the Kalachakra village in the heart of Dirang. It is said to be more than 500 years old. This monastery is relatively smaller and less crowded. On fine afternoons, you’ll find children from the village playing football and hide-and-seek around the premises. Along the entrance, the gompa has an assembly of elongated whitish Buddhist player flags fluttering in the wind. It also has yellow-painted walls and doors to attract the eyes of the visitors. It is at a walking distance from the main road of Dirang.

One of the key things that attract the visitors is the churning wheels that are aligned throughout the way to the monastery. It also has stupas at its entrance. The main prayer hall has Buddhist artefacts, sculptures and scriptures. It also has colorful flags and carpets that offer a spiritual delight. The steps that lead to the prayer hall are decorated with flower pots. Straight up ahead the prayer hall, there is a huge metal bell that is considered holy in Buddhism. People can sit and relax in the courtyard and can enjoy the view. They also have an adjoining guest house and fooding facility for visitors.

Even a short stroll around the village offers so many perspectives of beauty that you will definitely fall in love with.

Dirang Dzong is a historical village in Dirang. It lies in-between Sangti and Dirang town. According to legend, this was an erstwhile fortress dating back to probably the 9 th century and kept getting renovated occasionally. However, the present-day Dzong is a quaint village with towering walls and traditional hamlets. Nevertheless, the assembly of pillars and the location offer a birds-eye-view of the areas below making it a perfect place to visit while in Dirang.

A View of Dirang

Dirang Dzong – tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh

Last Updated on January 23, 2021 by asoulwindow

Dirang is surely one of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh. Tourist places in Dirang are many and varied. Many people make Dirang a mere stop while going to Tawang from Bhalukpong in Assam . However, having spent quality time in Dirang, I recommend all to spend at least 2 -3 days in Dirang or even 4-5 days if time is not a constraint for you.

Dirang which is situated in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh is after all a destination in itself. There are many places to visit in Dirang which will stay with you for a long time. I have been to many places in Arunachal Pradesh, which is also my new favourite state in India.

However, Dirang continues to enjoy the top position. I just love Dirang! My 15 days long road trip to North East India with Holiday Scout turned out to be memorable. Dirang was one of my stops during this once in a lifetime trip.

The verdant valleys, picturesque hills, ubiquitous Dirang Chu river, crisp fresh air, snow capped peaks, visually delightful landscapes, availability of good vegetarian/vegan food, availability of wi fi, good cellular internet reception, traditional architecture, modern facilities  and the perfect weather makes it one of the best hill stations I have been to.

The scattered religious places , displayed pots and pans outside most homes, napping dogs and cats, boundless prayer flags and a perfect mélange of old and new makes Dirang Dzong a must see place in Dirang. Dirang is one of the top tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh and yet an offbeat destination. That is the beauty of this beautiful state access by the chicken neck in North East India. Let’s have a quick look at some of the top 24 offbeat things to do in Dirang:

  • DIRANG DZONG

What is a dzong? The best thing about Dirang is the centuries old Dirang Dzong aka Dirang Fort. This 17 th century village is a living breathing testimony to the rich culture and heritage of Dirang. Located on the banks of the serpentine Dirang Chu river, Dirang Dzong offers a window to the ancient past of this part of Arunachal Pradesh. We visited many houses, many of which were more than 500 years old. The entire fort area was built to protect its inhabitants from attacks from the nearby places.

The architectural brilliance of the ancient buildings here are to be seen to be believed. One such house belonged to the forefathers of Sange Tsering , the very bright young man behind the Dirang Boutique Cottages and Holiday Scout, the pioneers in customized trips to anywhere in North East India. In fact Sange’s grandmother used to live in the home we visited. (Please see attached picture). Dirang Dzong, no doubt is the best place to see during Dirang sightseeing.

Built in the traditional local architectures, the houses at this walled town sustained and flourished through the years. We even visited a massive ancient fort which now lies in ruins. Most of the old buildings we visited were made with a combination of wood and stone. The architecture style is typically Buddhist. We also visited a small monastery right opposite the Dzong. The Dirang Gompa are a must visit place.

Located in the heart of the heritage village, the fort aka Dzong even had a jail which we could see from the outside as it was locked. The prison dated back to 9 th century. The massive fort dwarfed the old lady who was sunbathing and lived nearby. The Dirang Dzong reminded me of Paro Dzong and Thimphu Dzong which I explored during my visit to Bhutan .

I am not sure if she even had a modicum of idea about the historical importance of the fort. I tried to peep in through an ancient window of the fort jail and was cold shouldered by pitch black darkness. It was quite a huge prison. People from Dirang as well as other nearby town were imprisoned here. Isn’t Dirang the best of offbeat places in Arunachal Pradesh?

  • MANE TANGPU MONASTERY, DIRANG DZONG

When we visited this monastery, little idea did we have that we will be rewarded with an immersive local experience. We happened to visit the monastery during Tongchen, a ritual which happens every month during the full moon. It was one of the unique Dirang monastery.

On this occasion, ladies from Dirang town congregate and pray together at the monastery over some hot tea and snacks. They light butter lamps, pray, meditate, chant and swirl the individual prayer wheels for hours. It is like a monthly day out for local women. We visited on 24 th January. Do visit this Dirang Gompa.

  • WATERMILL – tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh

There is an impressive watermill near the Monastery in Dirang Dzong. Do not forget to pay it a visit. It is huge and looks impressive. The flowing river near the watermill adds to its beauty. Do not forget to take some nice pictures here. Selfies are OK, proper pictures are better. Just saying! But do not miss this unique place during your Dirang sightseeing trip.

  • THUPSUNG DHARGYE LING MONASTERY DIRANG

Do not miss this massive Dirang monastery. Inaugurated by His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama, the sprawling Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang is a must visit place in Dirang. Built on a huge area, if offers stupendous 360 degree views of Dirang valley. I got amazing views of the small villages, far away stupas and Dirang valley from here. We visited the monastery early morning. The calming quietude at the monastery engulfed us as we found ourselves to be the only visitors here when we visited.

The well maintained and manicured gardens of the premises of monastery make for a pleasant stroll. Also known as TDL Monastery by the locals, do not forget to pay a visit to the impressive bhāvacakra on the back wall on the ground floor. It is located on the back wall of the Mahayana Buddhist Monastery to aid the local people in understanding the Buddhist teaching easily. The graphic depictions and Buddhist concepts are explain in a beautiful and aesthetical way. It is one of the best tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

Built recently in April, 2017, the Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang is both a learning institute and a practicing temple. Monks and other Buddhists spend time here improving their knowledge of Buddhism. The literal meaning of Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery, which was christened so by His Holiness, the 14 th Dalai Lama is ‘Place of Flourishing of the Speech of Buddha’. No wonder, the Dirang monastery is a very important place for Buddhists.

Thupsung Dhargye Ling monastery was built with the aim of preserving and nurturing the ancient Tibetan Culture and Buddhist teaching which are under constant threat. We missed the morning prayers. You must wake up early to catch the monks praying early morning at around 6 a.m. This unique spiritual experience will stay with you for a long time. Do not miss any of the Dirang Gompa.

Contact of Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang: 8414998557, 7640 869686.

  • DIRANG CHU RIVER – GREAT FOR A DIP OR STROLL

During my many trips to North East India, I realized that people from different states of North East India love to picnic around a water body, preferably a lake or river. The swift running Dirang Chu River was omnipresent. Its origin can be traced back to Tawang which is located nearby. Dirang valley, indeed is one of the best offbeat places in Arunachal Pradesh.

Since Dirang valley is warmer than Bomdilla and other nearby places, you may want to take a quick dip here. I am not into dips in cold water, so I settled with a walk near the clear winding river. Isn’t Dirang sightseeing so refreshing!

  • KHASTUNG GOMPA: OLDEST MONASTERY

The 500 year old Gompa or monastery is no wonder a pilgrimage site for many Buddhists in this region. The entrance gate and the ancient leather prayer wheels impressed me. Very rarely have I seen something so precious casually existing and integrating with modern life. We have all (OK, most!) seen the metallic Buddhist prayer wheels in monasteries across the world.

It was for the first time that I had seen a leather Buddhist prayer wheel. The umpteen layers of leather were peeling off the Buddhist Prayer Wheel. I had goosebumps seeing ancient Buddhist scriptures which were still visible. It is one of the best tourist places in Dirang.

No prizes for guessing that Khastung Gompa is also the oldest Buddhist monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. There are many beautiful monasteries across all the poplar and offbeat tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • KALACHAKRA GOMPA- tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

The native people of Dirang revere this Buddhist monastery located in the Kalachakra Village. Dirang valley is predominantly Buddhist, which explains the presence of so many gompas or monastries in Dirang and the nearby Bomdilla. These are some of the best places to visit in Dirang. Have you been to these places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh?

Ensconced in purity and tranquility, Kalachakra Gompa will awaken your spiritual side. Don’t forget to admire the details: stucco sculptures and gorgeous murals. As they said, the beauty lies in the details. Dirang sightseeing is rewarding at every step! Do not miss this best of tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • SANGTI VALLEY

Located just 15 kilometers away from Dirang, Sangti Valley is a hidden gem very few know about. Dense jungles, voluptuous rivers and a looming presence of the Eastern Himalayas make it a picture postcard perfect destination. Punctuated with wildflowers and pine trees, Sangti Valley is a hidden paradise few know about. Hang out with the sheep, meditate in the midst of nature or pose for ridiculous pictures here, the choice is yours. Make sure you visit Sangti valley, which is one of the top places to visit in Dirang.

Sangti valley is visually stunning, so keep those batteries charged and SD cards empty before you head to Sangti Valley. It is a good idea to stay at Dirang Boutique Cottages and make a day trip to Sangti valley due to the lack of good places to stay at in Sangti valley. It is a beautiful Dirang homestay with acess to all the best places to see in Dirang. It takes around 30 minutes to cover the distance between Dirang valley and Sangti valley by car. Sangti valley and Tenga valley are some of the most picturesque tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • BIRD WATCHING

Dirang India is a heaven for serious bird watchers and bird photographers. I did see a fleeting glimpse of many colorful birds. The deep red colored (unidentified) bird I saw in Dirang Boutique Cottages remains one of my best memories from Dirang India.

In case Birdwatching gets your mojo back, then do head to Sangti valley near Dirang during winters, especially November and December. Migratory birds like Black Necked Cranes come all the way from China to Dirang every year. The local people call it tung tung ka uk.

  • GO FARM HOPPING IN DIRANG

You can also pay a visit to the Kiwi Farms, Regional Apple Nursery, Progeny Orchards or one of the many Oranges orchards. Fruits are grown in abundance in this region, thanks to a fertile soil and favorable weather conditions. In fact, we plucked fresh oranges right from the trees planted in the picturesque Dirang Boutique Cottages. Our gracious host Sange encouraged us to eat fresh, after all! It is one of the most offbeat places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • GO TREKKING IN DIRANG ARUNACHAL

There are many virgin trekking trails in and around Dirang. If you have some spare time you must embark upon a picturesque trek in and around Dirang valley. I am sure trekking in this part of India must be very different from any other trek you must have done till date. You can book a trek with Holiday Scout. They offer many exciting packages if you are looking for unique and offbeat places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh and other states of North East India. Dirang and Bomdila, both are some of the best offbeat places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • VISIT A WEAVER’S HOME IN DIRANG DZONG

India is a land of rich textiles. Predictably, you will see huge difference in the different textile styles in different parts of India. Dirang is no exception. We visited the home of a local weaver in Dirang Dzong. Not only did we learn about the textiles common in this part of Arunachal Pradesh but we also got to see a local home from inside. The fact that the home was in the midst of a centuries old village just added to its charm. You can even buy traditional shirts, scarves, bags etc from the local weavers.

  • HOT WATER SPRING

Most locals and tourists enjoy a refreshing bath in the hot water spring located in Dirang, especially during winter season. The hot waters spring is known to contain medicinal properties and is rich in sulphur, which adds to its benefits. These hot water springs are some of the little known offbeat tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • NATIONAL RESEARCH CENTRE ON YAK

Sange told me that the first test tube Yak in Dirang was born in National Research Centre on Yak which was founded by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Thus this centre plays an instrumental role in the conservation of the Indian Yaks, found in this part of India.

The centre also aims to develop and improve the quality of Yak products. You can visit National Research Centre on Yak with prior permission. Holiday Scout can help you get the permissions. Research and development (R & D) on issues related to Yak breeding and genetic resources are also done here. You can also get a good view of the National Research Centre on Yak from Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang. It is one of the top tourist places in Dirang.

  • HIMALAYAN CULTURE AND TRADITION PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Not only is it the newest monastery in Dirang but is also a learning centre for Buddhist monks. Tibetan and Buddhist teachings is taught here. Even foreigners and locals can enroll for a course here. It was established by Buddhist Culture Preservation Society in the year 2003. You can learn more about it on their website .  Do visit this and other tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • VISIT THE EXOTIC DIRANG MARKET

You must visit the vibrant Dirang market for a feel of the traditional local lifestyle. Keep your eyes peeled for the local fruits, vegetables and herbs which you must have never seen before. You can also get many shared taxis to different places in Arunachal and Assam from here.

I was however busy devouring a hearty breakfast at a typical North Indian style restaurant, which was probably owned by someone from Bihar or Uttar Pradesh . It is also a good place to pick some souvenirs. Shared cab or Tata Sumo from Dirang to Guwahati, Tawang, Tezpur etc are available from here. I love visiting such tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • MANDALA TOP

The breathtaking 108 Mani or Mandala Top is a lesser known cousin of the popular Dochu La Pass of Bhutan. The pious Mandala Top premises will include a house for keeping butter lamps, a fountain, a small museum and even a coffee house. A Buddha statue is also proposed in the centre. It is a plastic free and eco friendly zone.

The work here is undertaken by Shri. Phurpa Tsering, an MLA of Dirang. You can even camp here overnight. The drive to the Mandala Top becomes even more scenic during snowfall. Needless to say, Mandala Top is a popular picnic spot for both locals and tourists alike. I am sure no one told you about these secret places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh .

  • TAKE LONG WALKS

I love walking alone for hours on stretch. The simple yet soul satisfying walking trails are not only rejuvenating but also provide a glimpse into the local lifestyle. Greet a local, share a bread as you walk in different small villages in and around Dirang. In fact, the place near my hotel Dirang Boutique Cottages was apt for long walks. This is why it is the best of Dirang hotels!

Expect to walk next to gushing rivers, Buddhist stupas , ruins, ancient houses, lazy dogs, slow moving cows, suspension bridges, locals doing their chores, Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the air.

Walking amidst nature in fresh clean air is therapeutic, denied no one ever. You should spend some time walking near the sprawling Thupsung Dhargye Ling Monastery Dirang. The views from here are just too good.

  • EAT ORGANIC VEGETARIAN AND VEGAN FOOD

Most places grow organic food here. My meals at Dirang Boutique Cottages were very satisfying. Not only did I manage to find local dishes, North Indian food, vegan and vegetarian meals here but the fact that all the ingredients were organic made it all the more special.

The lack of pollution and low density of people eradicates the need of using pesticides in Dirang. Folks at Dirang Boutique Cottage grow their own food in their farm area. It was 100% organic. We could taste the difference. Enjoy great food as your get used to the pace of one of the best offbeat places in Arunachal Pradesh. I am sure they didn’t tell you about it!

  • READ OR WRITE: TAKE YOUR OWN SWEET TIME!

The balmy weather of Dirang makes you want to write that pending poem or article, or even better, a book! It is also apt for reading on soft grass under the sun. Sleeping while reading is optional though! Many places to see in Arunachal Pradesh come with this benefit of good weather and clean air. As you see the best of places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh, take some time for yourself and enjoy reading as it gets dark early in North East India.

  • SPEND TIME WITH LOCAL PEOPLE

The main population of Dirang comprises of the very friendly and simple Monpa people. Monpa people follow Buddhism and are easy to talk to. Many Monpa people in Dirang understand and speak good Hindi followed by English, of course after their native language. Also, always take permission before taking pictures of the local people. Most local people do not mind getting their pictures clicked. In fact, they might even approach you for the same.

And you never know, a local might just call you inside their home for a tea or a local alcoholic drink, eh! And in case you are an introvert, then you can indulge in some people watching, especially in the Dirang Dzong area. Generally most places in Arunachal Pradesh are inhabited by genuine, warm local people.

People sunbathing, mischievous kids painting the town red, women cooking the lunch, locals doing chores are some of the scenes you will enjoy observing here. It was a great advantage to explore Dirang with Sange Tsering from Holiday Scout. The local people know him well. Not only did he take us to a lot of secret places in North East India but also gave a very immersive travel experience.

You must visit Bomdila from Dirang. Bomdilla is surely one of the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh. Bomdila is little colder than Dirang. Bomdila sightseeing is rewarding. You can visit the lovely monasteries of Bomdilla. I particularly enjoyed spending time in the vibrant Bomdila market and the trek to a secret monastery early morning. We even visited an oracle who told me good things about my future. It is one of those hidden places in Arunachal Pradesh. What’s not to love? Arunachal Pradesh tour is just too rewarding!

BEST TIME TO VISIT DIRANG ARUNACHAL

Dirang is a year round destination. The weather in Dirang is great throughout the year. I visited Dirang during January. The nights were only slightly cold and the days were balmy and pleasantly sunny. Since Dirang is located than a lower altitude from Bomdila , Sela Pass and Tawang so it is pleasantly warmer and sunny than the other destinations in this region.

November to February is the best time of the year when the temperature hovers between a comfortable 5°C to 12°C. Dirang tourism is best enjoyed in these months.

Is Arunachal Pradesh safe to travel?

How safe is Arunachal Pradesh for female travelers? Well, Arunachal Pradesh is one of the safest states I have been to. I know many females who had traveled to Dirang, Bomdila and Tawang solo and enjoyed the trip. Most of the places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh have great infrastructure, good road connectivity and ease of communication.

The Monpa people are very friendly and you will not face any issue in traveling solo in Arunachal Pradesh. You just need to take precautions which you take while traveling elsewhere. Arunachal Pradesh is very safe for female solo travelers. Most of thetourist places in Arunachal Pradesh are very safe.

CONCLUSION: LAST WORDS ON DIRANG

Dirang is not your typical touristy Hill Station like Shimla, Manali or even offbeat places like Chakrata and Harsil in North India . That is what makes Dirang worth a visit. Having traveled to both neighboring Tibet and Bhutan , I can vouch about the similarity between these two and Dirang. And yet, it is different. Arunachal Pradesh sightseeing is just so rewarding! Many people also wonder if Dirang Tawang is a nice place for a honeymoon. I feel it is just perfect. The weather, lack of crowd, altitude and friendly atmosphere is apt for a honeymoon in Arunachal Pradesh.

The ease with which Hindi language is spoken and understood here by many along with easy availability of modern amenities, North Indian style vegan / vegetarian food etc makes Dirang a perfect stop for Indians.

That said, foreigners love Dirang too as it offers them an intimate introduction into Tibetan way of living which more popular destinations often fail to. Do visit Dirang with Holiday Scout and stay at the dream cottage like Dirang Boutique Cottages for a soul satisfying experience. Thank me later! Hope you have a great time exploring Dirang valley and other tourist places in Arunachal Pradesh.

The view from my Soul Window is rejuvenating!

To fend off tourists, a town in Japan is building a big screen blocking the view of Mount Fuji

A huge black barrier to block Mount Fuji from view will be installed in a popular photo spot by Japanese authorities exasperated by crowds of badly behaved foreign tourists, it was reported on April 26, 2024.

FUJIKAWAGUCHIKO, Japan — The town of Fujikawaguchiko has had enough of tourists.

Known for a number of scenic photo spots that offer a near-perfect shot of Japan ’s iconic Mount Fuji , the town on Tuesday began constructing a large black screen on a stretch of a sidewalk to block the view of the mountain. The reason: misbehaving foreign tourists.

“Kawaguchiko is a town built on tourism, and I welcome many visitors, and the town welcomes them too, but there are many things about their manners that are worrying,” said Michie Motomochi, owner of a cafe serving the Japanese sweets “ohagi,” near the soon-to-be-blocked photo spot.

Motomochi mentioned littering, crossing the road with busy traffic, ignoring traffic lights and trespassing on private property. She isn’t unhappy though — 80% of her customers are foreign visitors whose numbers have surged after a pandemic hiatus that kept Japan closed for about two years.

Her neighborhood suddenly became a popular spot about two years ago, apparently after a photo taken at a particular angle showing Mount Fuji in the background, as if sitting atop a local convenience store, became a social media sensation known as “Mt. Fuji Lawson,” town officials say.

The mostly foreign tourists have since crowded the small area, setting off a wave of concerns and complaints from residents about visitors blocking the narrow sidewalk, taking photos on the busy road or walking into neighbors’ properties, officials said.

In Europe, concerns over tourists overcrowding historic cities led  Venice last week to launch a pilot program  to charge day-trippers a 5-euro ($5.35) entry fee. Authorities hope it will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Fujikawaguchiko has tried other methods: signs urging visitors not to run into the road and to use the designated crosswalk in English, Chinese, Thai and Korean, and even hiring a security guard as crowd control. None worked.

The black mesh net, when completed in mid-May, will be more than 8 feet high and 65 feet long, and will almost completely block the view of Mount Fuji, officials said.

A town in Japan is building a large black screen to block the view of the country’s iconic Mount Fuji, in an effort to fend off misbehaving foreign tourists.

Dozens of tourists gathered Tuesday taking photos even though Mount Fuji was not in sight due to cloudy weather.

Anthony Hok, from France, thought the screen was an overreaction. “Too big solution for subject not as big, even if tourists are making trouble. Doesn’t look right to me,” he said. The 26-year-old suggested setting up road barriers for safety instead of blocking views for pictures.

But Helen Pull, a 34-year-old visitor from Britainthe U.K., was sympathetic to the local concern. While traveling in Japan in the past few weeks, she has seen tourism “really ramped up here in Japan from what we’ve seen.”

“I can see why people who live and work here might want to do something about that,” she said, noting many were taking pictures even when the mountain was not in view. “That’s the power of the social media.”

Foreign visitors have flocked to Japan since the border restrictions were lifted, in part due to the weaker yen.

Last year, Japan had more than 25 million visitors, and the number this year is expected to surpass the 2019 record of almost 32 million, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. And the government wants more tourists.

While booming tourism has helped the economy, it has brought complaints from residents in popular tourist destinations, such as Kyoto and Kamakura. In Kyoto, a famous geisha district recently decided to close some private-property alleys.

Locals are uncertain about what to do.

Motomochi said she cannot imagine how the black screen can help control the flow of people on the narrow pedestrian walk and the road next to it.

Yoshihiko Ogawa, who runs a more than half-century-old rice shop in the Fujikawaguchiko area, said the overcrowding worsened in the past few months, with tourists gathering from around 4-5 a.m. and talking loudly. He sometimes struggles to get his car in and out of the garage.

“We’ve never thought we’d face a situation like this,” Ogawa said, adding he is unsure what the solution might be. “I suppose we all just need to get used to it.”
