A Visit to the Ship’s Doctor on Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Wonder

Coupon image not uploaded

When you’re vacationing with Disney, whether that’s Disneyland , Walt Disney World , or on the Disney Cruise Line , it’s easy to forget that the real world exists. You’re immersed in a fantasy world where childhood dreams come true and magic happens all around you. But the truth is, a Disney vacation IS part of the real world, and like it or not, sometimes things go wrong. In past blogs I talked about having to go to a medical clinic in Walt Disney World , losing my driver’s license in Animal Kingdom , and taking a fall in Disneyland . Today I wanted to talk about something we never thought we’d need to do: visiting the ship’s doctor on a Disney Cruise.

The Disney Wonder in port

Towards the end of our recent cruise to Alaska , someone in our party became ill in the middle of the night. At first, we weren’t sure what to do. We called Guest Services, who put us in touch with the nurse on duty. When we explained the situation, the nurse let us know about the three tiers of service that the onboard Disney Cruise Line Health Center offered. First, there was emergency medical services. This would happen if someone onboard had a life-threatening, serious emergency. That individual would be evacuated from the ship and brought to the nearest hospital. This was clearly not the case for us. The second was urgent care, in which we would go to the Health Center without an appointment to get something taken care of right away. She warned us that this was quite expensive and shouldn’t be done unless we were seriously concerned about someone’s condition. This also was not the case for us. The third option, which is what we opted for, was to make an appointment with the Disney Cruse ship’s doctor during regular operating hours. There would be a charge, but the nurse said that in most cases, guests can get reimbursed by their insurance carriers.

On the Disney Wonder, the Health Center is located on the first deck

We arrived at our appointment promptly at 10:00am the next morning. On the Wonder, the Health Center is located on the first deck. All personnel were masked, and some also wore face shields. We were escorted into an examination room where a nurse carefully checked the patient’s vitals. The nurse pointed out that there was a bathroom adjoining the room in case anyone needed it. Dr. Alyssa met us very soon afterwards. She gave the patient a thorough examination and gave us instructions for care. She also gave us a small amount of prescription medication in case we needed it. The doctor also wrote us a letter to excuse us from that day’s shore excursion so that we could get a refund. Since the patient was a minor, she said usually they only will refund for the patient and one adult. However, she requested that both parents get the refund, and this request was honored. She also gave us an itemized bill that we could submit to our insurance for reimbursement. I’m happy to say that we were reimbursed the full amount. She told us to call back that evening to report on how the patient was doing. All in all, the medical personnel at the Health Center on a Disney Cruise did a great job in calming our fears, making the patient feel better, and helping us to navigate the complexities of the end of our cruise. I hope this post helps you to understand what your options are if someone becomes ill during your Disney Cruise.

Medical Services Aboard a Disney Cruise Ship & the Benefits of Travel Insurance

This is a guest post written by Cynthia, who found herself in need of medical attention on the Disney Fantasy.  Hopefully this review may help others to be prepared and know how the process works.

Imagine yourself sailing aboard a Disney Cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean, having a fabulous time with your family and enjoying all the sights and sounds that a Disney Cruise has to offer.   Pure magic . . . . until you slip and fall on Deck 13 while walking the Goofy Mini Golf course, resulting in a broken hand. It happened to me and I am here to tell you all I learned about the medical services onboard a Disney ship, and the benefit of having travel insurance.

In July 2018, my two girls and I were on a seven day Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Fantasy – our 5th Disney cruise.   I decided to spend the morning of day 5 of the cruise photographing the ship as we had a full day at sea and the weather was beautiful.   I wandered up to Deck 13 to take pictures around the aft of the ship where the Goofy Mini Golf course is located.   As I walked around a corner, I hit a puddle of water, causing me to slip and fall to the deck.   On my way down, my hand hit the side of a metal box.   I immediately knew something was wrong.

After locating my oldest daughter, I headed directly to guest services to let them know what happened and to ask about medical services.   I was told that the medical clinic opened at 4:00 p.m. – it was about noon at this point.   First lesson I learned:   even though the medical clinic has set hours, they will always open for an emergency.   Unfortunately I did not know this until I went to the clinic at 4:00 p.m.

As I waited for the clinic to open, I iced my hand (the gallon ziplock bags I always pack sure came in handy).   I also realized that it was going to be pretty difficult to get my wedding rings off because of how swollen my hand was.

Finally 4:00 p.m. arrived and I found my way down to the clinic.   The staff got me right in after seeing my hand.  The super funny nurse from Brazil mentioned how fun it was going to be to deal with something other than a cough or sea sickness!   X-rays confirmed a break, so a cast was necessary.   The more challenging issue was how to remove my wedding rings.   After 30 minutes or so of cutting, bending, pulling, and pain, the rings came off.   Here is what was left of my rings.

As the doctor was setting my hand and applying a soft cast that would get me through the last 2 days of the cruise, security was called to take a report.   The medical personnel also located my oldest daughter and had her come down to sit with me.   In all, I think I was in the clinic for about 2 hours.   The staff was wonderful.   I have nothing but good things to say about their care.   The doctor even called my cabin in the evening to make sure I was ok.

So how much did this all cost, and how do you pay for the medical services?   First, no medical insurance is accepted on board.   The cost of my treatment was $400 – much cheaper than back home.   The charge went directly on my ship account and was paid at the end of the cruise when I settled my account.   The medical clinic does give you all the documents you will need to submit to any insurance you might have that covers the treatment – more on that in a minute.   Make sure you get copies of everything before you leave the ship.

I do have a funny side story from dinner the night of the accident.  This night happened to be formal night.   I was dressed in my formal attire complete with cast and black arm sling.   When my family and I arrived for dinner, our serving team wanted to know the whole story of the accident.   When my dinner was served, my waiter immediately began cutting my steak!   My girls were laughing hysterically and encouraged the waiter to give me a “ketchup Mickey.”

I did not let this accident damper my fun or spoil the rest of the cruise.   Our next day was Castaway Cay day.   As you can see, broken hand and all, we enjoyed the day.

So now you’re home and have to continue with treatment for your injury.   What can you expect?   Most personal medical insurance does not cover the cost of treatment obtained while outside the USA (and onboard a cruise ship is considered outside the USA).   It will, however, cover the cost of your treatment once you return home.   So for me, my regular insurance did not cover the ship board medical services, but it did cover my follow-up care received at home: 2 doctor visits, x-rays, hand cast, and physical therapy.   I was responsible for my deductibles.   However, I purchased travel insurance before the trip and it really paid off.   The policy I purchased included coverage for medical services received outside the USA and follow-up care received once I returned home.

When I returned home, I immediately contacted the insurance company and submitted a claim.   I had to provide them with proof that the accident occurred while travelling and proof of all my out-of-pocket costs shipboard costs and my deductibles for follow-up care at home.   Within days of submitting my paperwork, I received a check reimbursing me for the total amount I paid for medical care.   To my surprise, the cost of repairing my rings was also covered.   By having the travel insurance, I saved myself about $1,500 after factoring in the cost of the policy.

In my mind, the cost of travel insurance is well worth it and I will continue to purchase travel insurance every time we travel internationally.

In summary, here is what I learned from this experience:

Take advantage of the medical services onboard the Disney ships if you need to – the medical staff is there to help

Keep copies of all documents you get from the medical staff

Seriously consider getting travel insurance before you sail

The eighth hole on the Goofy Mini Golf course is a doozy

Don’t let an accident spoil your trip.

Happy and safe sailing on your Disney Cruise!

Did you purchase travel insurance through DCL or separately? Going overseas in July, we have DCL travel insurance just need to know if we need additional.

Unless you purchased your airfare through DCL, your flights will not be covered by the DCL insurance. If something happens causing you to cancel the trip right before, you would not get reimbursed for airfare unless you have bought the airfare through DCL or have a separate travel policy. Also, any injury/illness that were to occur before/after the cruise while in a different country would not be covered by the DCL insurance, you would have to have a separate policy for that as well. Most US health insurance policies don’t cover things that happen outside the US, although some do so you should check yours.

March 1, 2019 at 4:51 pm

I asked Cynthia what she does, and she says she purchases all travel insurance through Costco Travel. The policy that she purchase covers items such as flight costs, cruise cost, property damage, lost luggage, flight interruption, medical treatment, and emergency medical transport back to the United States. The cost of the insurance is normally between 3% and 5% of the total trip cost.

March 1, 2019 at 6:55 pm

We have both travel insurance and our air fare thru DCL for our cruise. We’re flying into Heathrow 2 days early before embarkation (as we can with a Disney arranged airfare). This not only allows for a travel delay but also gives us some time to see the sites. So my question is: is the time (approx. 2 days) between arriving in England and boarding the ship is not covered by DCL travel insurance?

March 1, 2019 at 7:14 pm

I don’t know. I would check with DCL or your travel agent, if you’re using one.

Do prescription drugs have to be in original containers for a cruise?

According to Disney Cruise Prescription Drug Policy, it is recommended that prescription drugs be carried in their original containers during a cruise. While it is not explicitly stated as a requirement, having medications in their original packaging helps ensure identification, dosage, and instructions are readily available. This practice promotes passenger safety and allows medical personnel to easily verify the legitimacy of the medication. Additionally, it is advised to carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s note to provide further documentation if needed. Disney cruise medication policy

Disney Cruise Line has a comprehensive medication policy in place to ensure passenger safety and compliance with international regulations. It is important for passengers to carefully review the guidelines outlined in the Disney Cruise Prescription Drug Policy. The policy covers the proper handling and storage of medications, as well as restrictions on certain types of drugs. Passengers are advised to carry their prescription medications in their original packaging, clearly labeled with their name and dosage information. Additionally, it is essential to bring a sufficient supply of medications for the duration of the cruise. In case of emergencies, guests are encouraged to carry a copy of their prescription or a letter from their healthcare provider. For more detailed information, please visit the official Disney Cruise Line website.

In conclusion, understanding the Disney Cruise Prescription Drug Policy is essential for passengers who rely on prescription medication to manage their health conditions while on board. By adhering to the guidelines outlined by Disney Cruise Line, passengers can ensure a safe and enjoyable cruise experience without any complications or difficulties regarding their medications.

It is crucial for passengers to familiarize themselves with the policy before embarking on their Disney cruise. This includes understanding the rules regarding the transportation and storage of prescription medications, as well as the documentation required to bring them on board. By reviewing the Disney Cruise Line’s official website, passengers can find detailed information and guidelines on these matters [1].

Moreover, it is recommended that passengers consult with their healthcare providers and pharmacists prior to the cruise to ensure they have an ample supply of medications for the duration of their trip. This is especially important for those with chronic conditions or individuals who require certain medications for daily maintenance. By planning ahead and obtaining the necessary prescriptions and refills, passengers can avoid any potential medication shortages or complications during their cruise.

Passengers should also be aware of the restrictions on certain medications and substances while on board. It is important to note that Disney Cruise Line strictly prohibits the use of illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription medications [2]. This policy is in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew members.

Additionally, it is advisable for passengers to keep their medications in their original, labeled containers to facilitate the screening process at security checkpoints. This helps prevent any misunderstandings or confusion regarding the nature of the medications being carried. It is also recommended to carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor’s note, especially for controlled substances, to provide further documentation if needed.

Throughout the cruise, passengers should ensure that their medications are stored properly. This includes keeping them in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. It is also advisable to carry medications in carry-on luggage rather than checked baggage, as this ensures easy access and minimizes the risk of loss or damage.

In the event of a medical emergency or the need for additional supplies, Disney Cruise Line provides medical facilities and services on board their ships. The medical staff can assist passengers with basic medical needs, including the dispensing of prescribed medications. However, it is important to note that any additional medical services or medications obtained on board may incur additional charges [3].

By following these essential guidelines and being aware of the Disney Cruise Prescription Drug Policy, passengers can enjoy their cruise vacation with peace of mind, knowing that their health needs are being properly addressed. It is always recommended to check the official Disney Cruise Line website for the most up-to-date information and guidelines regarding prescription medications.

Please note that while this article aims to provide comprehensive information, it is always advisable to consult with the official Disney Cruise Line website or contact their customer service for any specific concerns or queries regarding the prescription drug policy.

Medical services on a Disney cruise?

Earning my ears.

Hello! We just booked our first cruise ever, the Disney Fantasy, departing on Oct 27th this year. I'm a little nervous about the length (7 days) because with two kids (5 and 1 at time of travel) you never know. Is there a doctor on call 24 hrs or they have a scheduled time? Do you have any illness related experiences on a cruise? We will be traveling with basic medication (fever, etc.) Thank you for your input!

DIS Veteran

The medical center facilities are better than I've seen in some small hospital ICUs. There are "hours" for non-emergencies, but the doc is on call 24/7 for emergencies. They are well stocked with medications. What they do not have is a lot of personnel. They are designed to stabilize and transport patients who need hospitalization because the do not have the staff to maintain round the clock care nor do they want that responsibility. The staff is employed by Vanter medical. You will pay for any services at the time (charge to KTTW) and are given the forms to submit to your travel insurance or health insurance for reimbursement.

My son (6 yrs at the time) was really sick on our Eastern Cruise, he ended up in the ship hospital hooked up to IV's, and was monitored and quarrantined for 3 days in the stateroom. When we got home, my comment was, "if you are a kid, the best place to get sick is on a Disney Ship." They took really good care of him, and they checked on him all the time. He finally was able to get off the ship at Castaway Cay to get fresh air and enjoy the last day of our cruise. They are very good, the medical team is also the medical team that takes care of the entire crew of the ship.

Fairytalelover - thanks for asking, not to scare anybody...but after all of the tests, it came down to...he swallowed too much of the pool water and the chlorine level just tore his stomach up. He couldn't eat or drink for a few days, throwing everything up, and then became dehydrated. He even had a siezure, so they monitored him and had him hooked up to IV's. They took good care of him, we even had several calls from them after we disembarked, and came home.

mdvlprof

Pool water. Yuck. 20-yr old DD had a reaction to pool water [Carnival]. Didn't have IVs, but had to go to ship hospital. Ships hospitals get an undeserved bad rap.

We have used the medical center twice. Once was when I got a vicious UTI on the Magic. I waited until the center was open that morning but it was quick and easy to get in and out for the antibiotics and the pain meds I needed - faster than my doctor's office here on land. The second was this past June on the Dream when my daughter got her thumb smashed in the hinge side of the stateroom bathroom door. They were really good with her. Gave her pain meds, took x-rays, etc.. Thankfully it was not broken - just looked horrible - and they were able to bandage her up and send us on our way. She felt pretty bad for a day or so just because of the pain but I was glad we knew it was not broken or anything more serious.

Livin' for disney.

My step-father had an heart attack on a 7 day Western 7 years ago. They honestly saved his life. The entire medical team was beyond fabulous. They took him off the ship and had someone stay with my mom until a plane arrived to airlift him back to the US and they constantly stayed in contact with my mom and the US hospital and called our room with updates.

Stunning video shows a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter airlifting a pregnant passenger from a Disney cruise ship near Puerto Rico.

The chopper was dispatched from Miami on Monday after the 35-year-old woman experienced unspecified health complications and required more advanced care than what was available onboard the Disney Fantasy ship .

The vessel was about 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico when the rescue call was made by the ship’s crew.

The woman and the ship’s doctor were hoisted aboard the aircraft and flew to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan before she was taken to a hospital.

“We are glad everything came together to help this passenger,” Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader, said in a news release Tuesday. “The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference.”

Moscow cruise port

Region Russia Rivers

Local Time 2024-04-26 03:44

Moscow is a Volga River cruise port, Russia's capital and largest city (population over 12,2 million, metro 17 million). Moscow City covers a total area of approx 2610 km 2 (970 mi2). By population, the city is ranked the world's 14th largest. Moscow is one of the Russian Federation's all 3 federal cities - together with St Petersburg and Sevastopol .

Being Russian Federation's capital, Moscow is a major economic, political, scientific and cultural center, as well as Europe's biggest city.

According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the 9th most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to Globalization and World Cities Research Network. It is also one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations in the world according to MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Moscow is the northernmost and the coldest megacity and metropolis on the Earth. It's home to Ostankino Tower, the tallest free-standing European structure; the Federation Tower, the tallest European skyscraper; and the Moscow International Business Center.

Moscow is situated on Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, which makes it the most populated inland city in the world. Moscow city is well known for architecture, particularly its historic buildings like Saint Basil's Cathedral. With over 40% of its territory covered by greenery, it's one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world. Moscow is the seat of power of the Russian Government, being the site of Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is now the residence of the President of Russia. Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are among the several World Heritage Sites in the city.

Moscow has 2 passenger terminals, North River Terminal (Rechnoy vokzal) and South River Terminal. The regular ship routes and cruises along Moskva and Oka rivers are used mostly for entertainment. North River Terminal (1937-built) is currently the main hub for long-range routes along the river. There are 3 freight ports that serve Moscow.

In late-July 2021 the city announced plans to incorporate a fleet (unspecified number) of fully electric passenger ferries into its public transportation network from summer 2022, the goal being to reduce the dependence on cars.

  • The boats are designed with length ~22 m (72 ft), passenger capacity 42, modern amenities (Wi-Fi, USB charging points, tables for working commuters), spaces for storing scooters and bicycles.
  • Moscow Transport confirmed that two routes (with max daily capacity ~16,000 passengers) have already been mapped out.
  • Passengers will be able to pay via bank cards, the city’s Troika card (smart card for travel by any public transportation) or biometric payment cards. Those with monthly/yearly public transit tickets will use the boats at no extra cost.
  • The new electric ferry service is up to 5 times faster (in comparison to other city public transports) and ~2 times faster than by car.

Moscow cruise terminal

Moscow's cruise terminal is called North River Terminal or River Station  ("Rechnoy Vokzal" / "речной вокзал").

The terminal was opened in 1937 and is one of 2 passenger terminals (the other being South River Terminal) of the city's river transport. North River Terminal is the main hub for long-range (including cruise) shipping routes.

South River Terminal (above photo) was opened in 1985.

Disney Cruise Line passenger rescued by US Coast Guard after emergency off Puerto Rico

Drone footage captured the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday.

A rescuer could be seen rappelling down from an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter onto the Disney Fantasy, floating in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Puerto Rico , in video shared by the Coast Guard.

The 35-year-old woman was strapped to a gurney and reeled into the helicopter in the heart-pounding moment. The agency said the woman "required a higher level of medical care" than what on board doctors could provide in the ship's medical bay.

Healthcare in Moscow

disney cruise medical services

This guide was written prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not reflective of the current situation. Travel to Russia is currently not advisable due to the area's volatile political situation.

Healthcare in Moscow is organised by the Moscow Health Department. While public healthcare facilities are available, most expats seek out private healthcare at international medical centres. Expats are advised to take out private medical insurance if it is not provided to them by their company.

Subsidised healthcare is provided to everyone living in the country, paid for by the state and the mandatory health insurance system. That said, professionals in the state system are likely to speak little to no English.

There are several private medical centres in Moscow where English is spoken and where the healthcare is on par with expat standards. These clinics are generally very expensive, so it is highly recommended that expats take out private medical insurance to cover medical costs in Moscow. Most insurance coverage plans will also include evacuation cover for emergencies or life-threatening situations.

Pregnant Woman Evacuated From Disney Cruise Ship

The US Coast Guard has released dramatic footage of the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship after suffering "health complications".

A MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter was filmed landing on the bow of the Disney Fantasy ship that was sailing 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla in Puerto Rico .

The coastguard said in a statement: "The medevac patient was a 35-year-old pregnant woman, US citizen, who experienced health complications and required a higher level of medical care ashore."

In a video shared on social media, a member of the helicopter crew is seen attaching the stretcher to a rope which is then hoisted, lifting the passenger into the aircraft.

The pregnant passenger was taken to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, where emergency service personnel were waiting, the US Coast Guard said.

She was later transported to the Centro Medico Hospital to receive treatment.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range medevac for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," Lieutenant Commander Todd Stephens said.
