Dodge Journey Check Engine Light On: Why and What to Do

The check engine is the most common warning light that appears in the Dodge Journey’s instrument cluster.  Well over half of this site’s content is related to solving the various reasons why the check engine light comes on.

The good news is that the check engine light indicates that there are Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) stored in your Journey’s computer , which is a very good thing.  DTC’s really help save time determining what is wrong with your vehicle.

The check engine light is often referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Service Engine Soon light.  All three terms are 100% interchangeable.

How to Reset the Check Engine Light

Common questions, what are trouble codes.

Trouble codes are a number sequence of letters and numbers that correspond with a standardized list of problems that can occur in any vehicle, including the Dodge Journey . Some of them are Dodge specific, while most have the same meaning no matter who made the vehicle.

Common OBD II Codes 

The most common of all trouble codes is P0420 (it indicates your Dodge Journey’s catalytic converter isn’t scrubbing pollutants efficiently).

Here are some of the other most common codes:  

• P0442 – Small EVAP leak (most commonly fixed by tightening a loose gas cap or replacing it)
• P0300 – Random misfire (bad ignition coil(s), spark plugs, or spark plug wires).
• P0128 – Engine running too cool (almost always caused by a thermostat that’s stuck open)
• P0172 – Air Fuel mixture too rich (there are many causes, including oxygen sensors, leaking injectors, or too much fuel pressure)

The most common codes are related to the emissions system .  Some of them are as easy to fix as replacing your Journey’s.  Others require serious diagnostic tests from a repair shop.

How to Pull Trouble Codes on the Dodge Journey

You can either pull the trouble codes from your Journey’s PCM (Powertrain Control Module) yourself, or you can bring your vehicle to a parts store or shop to have it scanned.

Pull Them Yourself  

You can put a scan tool into the OBD II port and pull codes out of the diagnostic system yourself.  Any vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up uses the same protocol.

You can usually find the OBD II port underneath the Journey’s steering wheel. The exact location of the port is going to depend on what model year you have. If you don’t see it check the owner’s manual or do a quick google image search.

Once your scanner is online, you can pull the codes. You should see a retrieve codes option.

Take Your Carortruck to a Shop or Parts Store

If you don’t have a scan tool, you can take your Journey to the local parts store.  Most of them are happy to pull the codes for you for free . 

A lot of auto shops also offer free scan service, but you may find pressured into authorizing whatever repairs they suggest on the spot.

Once you have the codes in hand, you can look them up and determine what’s wrong with your Journey.

There are three ways to reset the Dodge Journey’s check engine light.  We recommend trying to identify the problem and fixing it before resetting the check engine light.

1. Fix and Wait

The best way to clear the check engine light is to pull the trouble code, identify and fix the issue and then drive your Journey around until the module that threw the code recognizes that the problem is fixed. 

Sometimes it can take a few drive cycles for your vehicle’s check engine light to shut down.  Other times, it’ll happen as soon as you fire the vehicle up.  Some folks prefer to clear the code and see if it comes back on

2. Use an OBDII Scanner

You can use an OBDII scanner to turn off your Journey’s check engine light.  The catch is, that if you don’t fix the problem, the light will turn on again.

This is done by connecting a scan tool to your Journey’s PCM and choosing the “clear codes” option.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the issue, wait for three or four days of normal driving to see if the Check Engine Light turns back on.

If it does not come back on after this period, then you can assume that your Dodge Journey is fixed and the light won’t be turning back on.

3. Disconnect the Battery

If you’ve identified and fixed the issue that caused your Journey’s Check Engine Light to come on, resetting the light is as simple as disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. This can be done by unhooking both cables from the battery terminals (negative cable first) and waiting 30 seconds before reconnecting them.

Once the battery is reconnected, your Check Engine Light should be reset and should no longer be illuminated. If the light does come back on again after you reset it, then it means that the issue has not been properly fixed and needs further attention.

Will a Vehicle Fail Inspection With the Check Engine Light On

If you are looking to get your Dodge Journey through emissions and the check engine light is on, it is an automatic fail in almost every State in the Union.  It doesn’t matter why the check engine light is on, it only matters that a code is stored.

You can’t reset a check engine light to circumvent emissions requirements.  When you reconnect the battery, the OBD II system is going to need several drive cycles to qualify to take an emissions test, which will give it enough time to recognize the issue.

Can You Drive With the Check Engine Light On?

Whether you can drive your Journey with the check engine light on depends on the code(s) that triggered the check engine light.  

You certainly can’t drive the Dodge Journey with the check engine light flashing.   A flashing check engine light indicates that there is a serious problem with the engine.

Why is My Check Engine Light Flashing?

A flashing Check Engine Light typically indicates a serious issue with your Journey and should not be ignored.  It usually indicates a catastrophic misfire that can dump raw fuel into the exhaust system, which can damage the catalytic converter and cause backfiring.  Do not drive your vehicle with a flashing check engine light .

What does the check engine light of your Journey mean?

In a few words: It’s a warning light that alerts the driver about any type of engine problems . In some vehicles, the light comes in two colors: yellow to indicate minor problems and red to indicate serious problems.

The check engine light is part of every vehicle that has an electronic engine management system, either an integral one or only for fuel ignition. Its function is to alert the driver about any type of engine problems .

Indicator status and severity

• The light turns on when you switch on the ignition key and then it turns off : It’s normal. It’s used to verify that the light itself is working and the bulb is not burned out.
• The light blinks and then it turns off (cyclically) : This indicates that the car had a problem at one point but it is not happening at the moment.
• The light is steady: This indicates that there is a problem but is not so serious as to stop driving your vehicle.

1. Gas Cap Problems

A loose, broken, or missing gas cap can trigger the check engine light on your dash.  

Why? The gas cap helps maintain the fuel pressure inside the fuel tank. When faulty, it could affect the fuel system and reduce fuel economy. Your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) will register the P0440 trouble code if there are issues with the gas cap.

The catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust system. But it tends to clog over time , reducing how well it can remove carbon monoxide from the exhaust gases. 

A clogged catalytic converter can trigger the engine warning light when the buildup of carbon monoxide emissions in the exhaust system causes overheating and poor engine performance. If your clogged catalytic converter isn’t functioning properly, the OBD II scanner will show a P0420 engine code. 

3. Faulty Spark Plugs or Spark Plug Wires 

When you turn on your car, the spark plugs (and spark plug wires) receive high-voltage electricity through the ignition coil. Each spark plug ignites the air-fuel mixture that starts the engine. 

A dirty or worn spark plug (or bad ignition coil) may lead to an engine misfire (and poor engine performance), which triggers the check engine light. Faulty spark plugs can also impact your fuel economy. Your ECU will register a P0300 or P0171 code if your spark plugs or plug wires are the issue.

4. Faulty Oxygen Sensor (O2 Sensor)

When the ECU receives inaccurate readings from the oxygen sensor, it supplies the engine with the wrong amount of fuel and air, leading to an engine misfire, poor engine performance, and bad fuel economy.  

Why does this happen? The oxygen sensor is constantly exposed to hot exhaust gases, which results in its deterioration over time. Depending on the specific oxygen sensor problem, the P0175 , P0713, P0171, or P0162 check engine light codes may appear.

5. Faulty Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)

The mass airflow sensor (MAF) sensor measures how much air enters the engine. When it malfunctions, the engine receives the wrong fuel-air mixture, resulting in a misfire and an active CEL. The engine code for a faulty MAF is P0101 , but several other check engine light codes often appear simultaneously. 

6. A Vacuum Leak 

The vacuum system pushes gas fumes through the engine to reduce harmful emissions. It also provides a vacuum environment to control RPMs. 

If the vacuum system leaks , unmetered air enters the combustion chamber. This affects the air-fuel mixture, resulting in an engine misfire and an active CEL. The ECU will register a P2279 diagnostic trouble code if this happens.

Now that you know some likely culprits for your illuminated check engine light, let’s look at what to do next. 

What to Do If Your Dodge Check Engine Light Turns On?

Besides reading the specific error code, the key trick to assessing the CEL severity on your Dodge Grand Caravan or another model is observing the way it turns on. You may see a flashing light, a constant light, or even a check engine light that only comes on occasionally. 

1. Check Engine Illuminates under Certain Circumstances 

Take note of any performance change when the check engine light turns on. If the change is significant, it’s likely that a component is about to fail. So, get your vehicle looked at soon. 

2. Check Engine Light Is Constantly On

My check engine light appears only when starting the car from [off -> acc -> run] without pressing the brake pedal. But pressing the brake pedal + start button it doesn't show. Please Help.

Do you have push button start? It shouldn't start without pressing the brake pedal. It may be an issue with your transmission lock, or maybe with your ignition lock itself. For a proper diagnosis you'll want to take it to your dealer.This is something you'll want to get checked out pretty soon, if it is push button start then it could make the car vulnerable to theft.

Its supposed to. It’s a bulb check. 

It's also an "emissions ready" check. If you leave it in "run" without starting the engine , the light will illuminate, and then either stay solid if the vehicle is ready for an emissions test (no pending trouble codes) or flash 10 times if it's not ready (existing trouble code, or not enough data since the last time all codes were cleared/battery was disconnected).

Now, does the light turn on once the engine  is running if you start from "ACC," or does it immediately turn off once the engine is running?

Also, can you get the engine to start without pressing the brake pedal? If so, that's a separate issue with your vehicle that needs to be addressed. It should only be possible to start the engine with the brake pedal depressed.

5 Reasons Why Your Check Engine Light May Be On

The dashboard of your car provides plenty of useful information while you're driving, from the speed you're traveling at to the amount of gas left in your tank. The check engine light is another dashboard staple, but because the information it provides isn't as specific as other lights and meters, you might be tempted to ignore it. Conversely, you might start to panic the moment it lights up, assuming the worst and envisioning costly bills from your mechanic.

There are many different reasons your check engine light may be on — ranging from minor inconveniences to dangerous problems that should be fixed as soon as possible. That's why you shouldn't freak out or ignore the sensor when you notice it, but instead hone in on the exact cause and respond accordingly. The quickest way to determine what's setting off your check engine light is by buying and using an OBD2 scanner . This relatively inexpensive device can plug into your vehicle's computer and assess what issues your car is suffering from. This is the same type of scanner used by mechanics, and it can save you a lot of money by skipping a trip to the body shop.

If you don't have an OBD2 scanner on hand, there are a few common problems that could trigger your check engine light. By knowing what they are, you can quickly check for yourself if they're what's lighting up your dashboard, and you can possibly even troubleshoot and correct them yourself without spending a ton of money. Here are five reasons why your check engine light may be on.

Loose or broken gas cap

A common explanation for why your check engine light is on is a loose or broken gas cap. In this capacity, the light is useful as a reminder to make sure you've replaced it after refilling your tank, just as your car will usually alert you when you leave a driver-side or passenger door ajar. If the hinge cover or another part of your cap is broken, you'll need to put a little more effort into fixing it and getting the check engine light to go away.

What you shouldn't do is ignore the issue, even if it seems like a minor one. Driving without a gas cap can mess with the recirculation in your fuel system and cause fuel to evaporate from your tank. Gas is already expensive enough — you definitely don't want to be paying for more than you already need because you're letting some of it vanish into the ether. Evaporating gas shouldn't be taken lightly, which is exactly why vehicles are built with sealed evaporative systems and have sensors closely monitoring this part of your car in the first place.

The check engine light may be sensing leaks caused by bigger issues than just your gas cap, such as a problem with one of the plastic recirculation lines, connectors, or fittings in the system. If replacing your gas cap doesn't solve the issue, you may need to get these checked out. The best thing to do is to prevent leaks in the first place by making sure you always replace your gas cap carefully when pumping gas. Topping off your gas tank is also a big mistake  and could cause serious damage to the cap or other parts of your car.

Faulty sensors

Your vehicle is loaded with sensors that measure everything from oxygen to coolant temperature, so it's not uncommon for at least one of these sensors to malfunction from time to time, in which case your check engine light may begin glowing. The oxygen sensor that measures how much unburned oxygen is in your car's exhaust system often operates in an environment exceeding 800 degrees, so it shouldn't be a surprise it'll eventually need to be replaced. A broken oxygen sensor can lead to the air-fuel mixture in your engine becoming inefficient, and you'll be burning more gas than you should be. Worse, a faulty oxygen sensor can also cause damage to the spark plugs and catalytic converter in your vehicle, causing even bigger headaches down the road.

Likewise, the mass airflow sensor in your car can often be faulty, especially as it gets gunked up from use. This can lead to your engine jerking, dragging, stalling, or failing to start, among other problems. You can purchase specialized cleaners or save money by putting your mass airflow sensor in a Ziploc bag filled with rubbing alcohol to remove grime and dirt. Doing this twice a year or when you're changing your oil can prevent problems before they start or worsen and trip the check engine light.

In addition to the oxygen sensor, coolant temperature sensor, and mass airflow sensor, your check engine light may indicate problems with your engine oil sensor, throttle position sensor, fuel pressure sensor, or coolant level sensor. The best way to determine a specific issue is by seeing what codes your OBD2 scanner brings up when plugged into your vehicle's computer.

Spark plug issues

Spark plugs are relatively affordable and simple components of your vehicle, but they're important nonetheless, as are the ignition coils that give them the electricity they need to ignite the fuel/air mixture in your engine. Issues with your spark plugs, coils, or spark plug wires can activate your check engine light, so you may want to inspect them when the pesky warning shows up on your dashboard.

Many modern cars contain multiple coils for each cylinder in your engine, which means there are more places for something to go wrong. Spark plugs can wear down or become fouled by oil, carbon, or fuel. They can also blister if they're running too hot for too long. If you know how to tell if you have a bad spark , you can identify whether or not they're the issue pretty quickly after popping your hood. Replacing them yourself isn't that hard, and spark plugs typically cost less than $20, while coils are around $50 — so you can save a lot of money by fixing this issue in your garage rather than having a mechanic do so at a body shop.

Older vehicles also use wires to connect spark plugs and coils, and if damaged, these wires can set off your check engine light. If your engine sounds shaky while idling, has a significant drop in performance, or does not get as many miles to the gallon as it usually does, it could be a sign that your spark plug wires are causing your Check Engine Light to illuminate. Fortunately, these are also cheap and easy to swap out yourself.

Bad or incorrect gas in your tank

Your vehicle likely doesn't have a dedicated light for when you have a bad tank of gas, but if you do, it could trigger your check engine light. Gasoline can expire, or impurities in the mixture could make it very hard for your engine to properly run on it. The gas could also be perfectly fine, but not the right kind for your car. If you're driving a higher-performance vehicle that is designed to use the more expensive premium fuel offered by gas stations (typically octane grade 91 to 94), don't try to save money by feeding it the cheaper stuff, which is usually octane level 87.

Conversely, if you own a car that runs fine on regular fuel, that doesn't mean paying extra for the higher-octane premium gas will give you better performance . You should just go with the type of gas your engine is designed to use. If you're unsure what that is, check your owner's manual to see what octane levels your engine requires. If you do have a tank filled with bad gas or the wrong type of fuel, you can try to keep driving until it's all used up, but this can hurt the performance of your engine or cause it to overheat. The best way to get rid of the check engine light in this situation is to have a mechanic drain your fuel tank completely before filling it back up with proper gasoline.

Catalytic converter issues

Catalytic converters have been an important part of engines for decades, helping keep carbon monoxide out of the environment. If yours isn't working properly, your engine will have lower performance and fuel economy and could even fail completely. You also won't pass your next vehicle inspection. If your car is making weird noises or the smoke coming out of your tailpipe is thicker or a different color than usual, it could be from issues with your catalytic converter. A check engine light could also mean there's something wrong with it or that, perhaps, it's missing entirely (which is very possible, even as California strives to end catalytic converter theft) .

You'll definitely want a mechanic to replace a busted catalytic converter, but you'll also want to inspect the exhaust system and rest of your engine as well, as issues with other components may have damaged it in the first place and could do the same with a new one. Also, make sure you (or a mechanic) perform regular oil changes and you consistently get in enough highway miles with your car to keep your current converter free of clogs and in good shape to avoid setting off another check engine light down the line.
