How to download old versions of macOS: Get Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, and more

There are a few reasons why you might want to download and install an old version of macOS or Mac OS X. Perhaps you’re relying on software you have discovered doesn’t work properly in the latest version. Perhaps your Mac has run slowly ever since you updated. Or maybe you just don’t like the new version of macOS that you have installed. Either way, you have questions and we have answers. 

In this article, we will cover how to get old versions of macOS, including Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, El Capitan, Sierra, Yosemite, and even old versions of Mac OS X. We explain how to get hold of the relevant installer files so that you can install the software on your Mac.

Just note: if you were hoping to run Catalina, Mojave, or a version of macOS older than Big Sur on an M1- or later Mac, that’s not possible.

Where to get older versions of macOS

Before you can install an older version of macOS or Mac OS X you will need to get hold of the installer for the version of macOS you want to install. Luckily it is possible to get ahold of these files, as long as you know where to go on the Mac App Store. If you’re unsure of your Mac’s compatibility, check out our list of which Macs run which versions of macOS & Mac OS X .

It is possible to download older versions of macOS from the Mac App Store. Click on the links to download the installers for the following macOS versions:

*Note that we have discovered that the links we give below will only work if you are using Safari, so we suggest you switch to Apple’s browser before moving on. You should also close the Mac App Store app if you have that open or the link may not work*

• macOS Ventura
• macOS Monterey
• macOS Big Sur
• macOS Catalina
• macOS Mojave
• macOS High Siera

Older verisons of macOS aren’t availbale on the Mac App Store, but Apple does provide dmg files of them. You need to download them in Safari. A disk image named InstallOS.dmg will download and once it does you need to locate the pkg installer inside the disk image.

• OS X El Capitan
• OS X Yosemite
• OS X Mountain Lion

How to download an older version of macOS for an M-Series Mac

Apple began transitioning away from Apple silicon with the release of macOS Big Sur in 2020, so any version of macOS before that won’t run on an M1 Mac or later.

If you have a M1 or later Mac you will see a message that your Mac is not compatible with versions of macOS that predate Apple’s move to its own silicon. All versions of macOS prior to Big Sur require an Intel Mac.

How to download macOS Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave and High Sierra

You can download the installers for many versions of macOS from the Mac App Store. Follow these steps to download the version of macOS that you want from the Mac App Store. Use Safari and close the Mac App Store app if you have that open before you begin.

• Follow the Mac App Store link above to the software you require. Use Safari and the Mac App Store will open on the page for the macOS version you require.
• Click on Get.
• Software Update will open with the words “Finding Update”. Eventually a message “Are you sure you want to download macOS [name]” will appear. It might look like an update rather than the full version, but you’ll see from the size of the download (around 6GB) that this is the complete installer for macOS.
• Once the installer has downloaded do not click “Install”. If you do, the installer will automatically be deleted (plus it won’t install if you are already running something newer).
• You should be able to find the “Install macOS [name]” app in your Applications folder, which you can use to downgrade macOS to an older version (see our separate tutorial).

How to download Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mountain Lion and Lion

Apple provides dmg files of these older macOS versions, but you need to download them using Safari. A disk image named InstallOS.dmg will download and once it does you need to locate the pkg installer inside the disk image.

Prior to June 2021, you could purchase OS X 10.7 Lion or Mountain Lion from Apple for $19.99/£19.99 each – Apple would send you a download code. Now Apple has stopped charging for the aging operating system versions. Instead, you can download the operating systems directly from the company along with these other versions.

We saw a warning about the connection not being private when trying to download these, this message is appearing because it’s not an https connection, probably because these files predate that standard, but do exercise caution here. The links come from this Apple page so should be secure.

What to do if the Mac App Store links above aren’t working

We’ve said above that in our experience usually the reason the above links don’t work is if you are browsing in something other than Safari, or if you have already got the Mac App Store open. However, if you are still finding that the link isn’t working you could try the alternative methods below.

Another issue is if the link takes you to the correct page in the Mac App Store, but you see an Update not found error message when you try to download it. This is an issue we are aware of that others have encountered, although we haven’t. In that case, we suggest you try to download the installer via that link using an older Mac.

You may also encounter issues if you are trying to download an older version of macOS that your Mac cannot support. Usually, when Apple introduces a new Mac it will not be able to run the version of macOS that shipped before the one installed on that Mac. The older macOS might not support certain components in that Mac, for example.

Other ways to get older macOS versions

If you are running an older version of macOS – or someone you know is – you should be able to easily find older versions of macOS and even Mac OS X in the Mac App Store. How easy they are to find will be determined by the version of macOS running on that Mac.

Prior to macOS Mojave’s arrival in 2018, the installers for the older macOS versions could be searched for or found via the Purchased tab (not that anyone has had to pay for a Mac OS X update for years).

However, when Apple introduced Mojave the Mac App Store changed, and these installers can no longer be searched for or found in the purchased section of the store. (Although we do have redirect links in the section above to each of the relevant pages on the Mac App Store.)

If you happen to have access to a Mac that’s running an older version of macOS, log into the Mac App Store with your password and download the Mojave installer on that Mac. Alternatively, ask a friend to download a copy of the installer from the Mac App Store for you. Once the installer has downloaded don’t install it! If you do the installer will be deleted. You’ll find the installer in your Applications folder from which you can copy it onto your Mac or create a bootable installer .

You may also find updates to an older version of macOS on Apple’s website . However these are just point updates, rather than the full version, so it won’t be much help if you are trying to get the full download.

The one thing you really mustn’t do is go to a torrent site and download a copy of the macOS you want. Just because Apple gives away its software for free, don’t think it’s fine to just pick up a copy. Pirated copies of Apple software could have been adjusted to allow hackers access to the software and your Mac.

How to get OS X Snow Leopard 

If your Mac has a version of macOS installed that is older than Snow Leopard you won’t have access to the Mac App Store. For a number of years after Snow Leopard arrived all versions of Mac OS X arrived via the Mac App Store, those who never installed Snow Leopard had a problem: without Snow Leopard, they couldn’t update.

Until 2021 Apple still sold a boxed version of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard for $19.99/£19.99 (at its launch in 2009 it cost $25/£25). If you purchased Snow Leopard this way you were sent a physical box containing an optical disc – so you will need a CD/DVD drive to install it (which you will probably have if the Mac is that old).

Apple has now removed the ability to buy Snow Leopard. However, this isn’t a big problem because those people who were previously locked out of updates can now download the Lion or Mountain Lion update via the links provided above.

How to get OS X Leopard or earlier

If the old version of the OS you are after predates Snow Leopard and you have a developer account you might be able to get it from developer.apple.com/downloads . If you search within the OS X category you should see downloads for all versions of OS X, at least from version 10.3 to 10.6.

You may be able to access the Developer section of the website, but you will only be able to access certain software downloads if your Apple ID is associated with a paid Apple Developer Program. It costs $99/£79 a year to join the Apple Developer Program and you have to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

You could also try looking on Amazon or eBay to see if anyone is selling old versions of the Mac operating system or perhaps a Mac running one.

Troubleshooting, where to download old mac os software from.

Do you have an older Mac that you still use? Or maybe an older retro Mac is sitting in a closet that you’d like to dust off and get some use out of? Maybe it’s a PowerBook that is running Snow Leopard, an original iMac with Tiger, an older Macintosh LC 475 with System 7.0.1, a Quadra 800 with Mac OS 9, or a Macintosh SE with System 6.

Whatever the older Macintosh computer is, to make it useful nowadays you’d likely want to find and download some old Mac software for it.

This post will aggregate a collection of links and resources for finding and downloading old Mac software, including old Mac system software, old Macintosh applications, and more, for everything from older Intel Macs, to PowerPC Macs, to 68040 and 030 Macs.

Where to Find & Download Old Mac OS Software

First, Apple offers many downloads of older software on their official Apple Support Downloads page. Of course this only includes Apple software, but if you’re looking for old versions of iMovie, Pages, Keynote, the iLife Suite, older Mac OS X system updates, firmware updates and security updates, older versions of iTunes and QuickTime, and similar Apple apps and software, it’s a great place to start.

The Apple Support Downloads page is most useful for finding software for more recent older Macs, particularly anything that is running a version of Mac OS X, even if it’s no longer a supported or updated system software release, like for Macs running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 or Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.5. If you’re looking to extend the life of such a Mac, the official Apple Support Downloads page can be quite useful and provide you with older versions of iTunes, Safari, iLife, and much more. Try looking there first, there’s a lot available! Just search for apps, system updates, and software packages by name.

Where to Find & Download Much Older Mac OS Software for Classic Mac OS, PowerPC, 040, etc

What about locating much older Mac OS software? Say, Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 system software, or System 7.5.2 and System 7.6.1? And what about apps for those much older Mac OS Classic system software releases for older PowerPC, 68040, and 68030 processors? The following links may be helpful for that purpose, though keep in mind all of these are not officially supported by anyone, they are not sanctioned by Apple or any other developer, and most of the links are to what is considered abandonware software – meaning it’s old, no longer updated, or supported. But these type of resources are excellent for working with much older Macintosh computers, whether it’s an original Bondi Blue iMac, a G4 Cube, a Macintosh SE/30, Performa 6220, iBook, PowerBook 2400, or the whole array of pre-Intel Mac computers.

These links can also be helpful if you’re a retro emulator fan and you’re wanting to acquire a particular software package or library for local emulation, for example you can use Mini vMac emulator to run System 7 and have an entire old Mac system installation right on top of your existing modern MacOS, or you can use third party tools like Basilisk or SheepShaver for emulation on modern Macs too. But if you don’t want to commit to local emulation, you can also run Hypercard in retro Mac OS System in a web browser or run a web browser based Mac Plus emulator with Mac OS Classic too . There are many other fun retro computing possibilities out there to enjoy too.

One thing to keep in mind when downloading software packages for much older Macintosh computers and system software versions is that while the software itself is often tiny in size (remember when Photoshop was under 1 MB??), getting those software packages onto the older Macs can be a challenge. Often the simplest way is to start an FTP server on the Mac running a modern Mac OS X release and then using an FTP client like Fetch or Archie on the much older Mac to directly download the packages to the older computer. That would require some local networking however, but if the older Macintosh is directly connected to the internet already they could always just download the package files directly too. And of course the other option is to use physical media, whether it’s an SD card, CD / DVD, an external hard drive with an appropriate adapter, or floppy disks, that’s up to you.

Hey guys, Anyone know where I can download an old app called “Memory Cleaner 1” that will work with Mountain OS 10.7.5?

This is so useful, I am so glad I found this page and now I know where to get old Mac software from! Hooray!!!!!

Before downloading any software make sure that your Mac is running at least Snow Leopard preferably up to date version 10.6.8 and check if your Mac can run the newer software. You can download most older versions of macOS using the Mac App Store or direct links to Apple’s website. Unfortunately, Apple doesn’t index the Mac App Store entries so that you can search for them in the app. To get them, you’ll need to follow direct links. Direct Disk Image Links for Older macOS Downloads macOS Sierra (2016) Mac OS X El Capitan (2015) Mac OS X Yosemite (2014) Safari will download the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. Move pkg installer to the Application folder.It will install an app named Install [Version Name]. Open that app from your Applications folder to start installing the operating system directly onto your Mac. macOS Sierra 10.12 can upgrade El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion OS X El Capitan 10.11 can upgrade Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion or Snow Leopard OS X Yosemite 10.10 can upgrade Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion or Snow Leopard Prepare USB as follows for use to instal on other Mac computers. USB must be at least 16gb. Plug in USB Go to Applications. Go to Utilities Erase disk Make sure that Mac OS [Journaled] and GUID are selected. Always make a backup of any files before installing software upgrade in case something goes wrong. Download: example OS X El Capitan This will be downloaded as a disk image called InstallMacOSX.dmg. Copy and paste to a USB. On a Mac that is compatible with El Capitan, open the disk image from the USB. Copy and paste to Applications folder then open and run the installer, which has the name InstallMacOSX.pkg. It installs for example Install OS X El Capitan or any other OSX you have selected into your Applications folder. Start up the Mac you want to instal the software on. Once up and running plug in USB and instal new OSX. You don’t need a bootable installer to upgrade macOS or reinstall macOS, but it can be useful when you want to install it on multiple computers without having to download the installer each time. I have tried this method on a MacBook Pro 2008 and a MacBook 2010 and it worked.

I used to use the cover/title design templates from iDVD to export into the old FCP for special effects. Apple really did a good job with that software back in the mid-2000s. Very impressive. I really miss how easy it was to use.

Amazing to see a version of TeamViewer for PPC. My Mum loves her 10.4.11 PPC machine but theversion TeamViewer have has gone E-o-L. I’ll be trying this out tomorrow!!

Another good place to download old Mac software, and old DOS and Windows PC software too is a website called http://www.myabandonware.com

I think the theory behind abandonware is that it has long since been abandoned by the developers and creators and so it becomes available to download, but ultimately I do not know much about that aside from it makes downloading old Mac games and old DOS PC games very easy.

Long live the old Mac!

I found one Answer: “Regarding APFS and macOS High Sierra, Apple says the following on a knowledge base support article:”

“When you install macOS High Sierra on the Mac volume of a solid-state drive (SSD) or other all-flash storage device, that volume is automatically converted to APFS. Fusion Drives, traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), and non-Mac volumes aren’t converted. You can’t opt out of the transition to APFS.”

This is about downloading old Mac OS software, like System 7, Mac OS 8, or ResEdit, KidPix, or Hypercard, specifically for old Macs. This article has nothing to do with APFS or High Sierra, High Sierra is a newer operating system, like Mojave, etc.

There is no older Mac with an SSD so this is irrelevant for older Macs, what you describe pertains to new Macs.

I run High Sierra on a 2.4Ghz i7 late 2011 17″ MBP, 4GB RAM and old HD. Of course the beachball has attacked and bad. I want to go back to something that worked, as I was happy enough until this month. I’ve gathered, from you smart guys, that Snow Leopard is the best choice for MacOS and I can download all the Apple apps to go along with that(?)

Questions: 1. What about my files? Didn’t the new file system change all the files I’ve opened??? Just Pages docs & photos I edited. and PDFs.

2. If I install a diff OS will my HD be erased in the process? (No I don’t have any backup, no comments on that please.)

3. If I run Snow Leopard can my MBP 750GB Mac HD function properly to back up my new system (coming in the mail with a SDD) running High Sierra?

I have an old iMac 2006 (intel) running Tiger (the best and most beautiful OS made by Apple so far). Pity Safari does not work perfectly. Unfortunately nor Classilla neither TenFourFox are made for Intel processors…

I love Snow Leopard and only upgraded to OS X 10.9.5 for upgraded browser support by Firefox. I wish Firefox still supported Snow Leopard but what can you do. I may go back to Snow Leopard one day as it is so much faster and stable compared to any other version of OS X. In reality, what do operating systems really offer that can not already be done? Just wish developers would keep supporting older operating systems, such as Snow Leopard and XP.

I run High Sierra on a 2.5Ghz i5 mid 2012 13″ MBP, 16GB RAM and dueling SSD’s (took out the optical I never use installed a second SSD) and it rocks. I have a 2.26Ghz mini with 8GB RAM and an SSD system drive running Snow Leopard that is ok but HS on the MBP totally slays it for speed and processing power.

The two major apps that are MUCH worse in their modern forms as to be iMovie and Airport Utility. These are the two that I have used several hours up getting to run again on my hardware.

PowerBooks can’t run Snow Leopard as they are all PowerPC architecture. Snow Leopard was the first OS that was Intel only. Please correct your article.

If you have an old Mac, surely you know what software it runs already. So can’t you figure that out on your own? Everyone needs their hand held constantly don’t they?

I run Snow Leopard on an i5 hackintosh. I run Tiger 10.4.11 on a PowerBook 1.67GHz using Classic mode to run OS9. I have hundreds of old apps going back to MacOS 6. (I also run several MacBook Pros, which are much better for web browsing and videos.)

Me too, I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and it’s performance is far better than what I can ring out of anything ‘new’

Also the “old” Mac computers have more ports, and are upgradable by the user. They are more “pro” than anything coming out of the company now.

Hi, I search a SQLITE for a old PowerPC ??

Snow Leopard. The last competent OS for the Mac. Too bad VMWare doesn’t support it and I’ll have to get a copy of Snow Leopard Server if I want decent sized scroll bars with scroll bar arrows. Speed was never the issue for me but user friendliness most definitely is. The only thing Sierra has that’s better than something on Snow Leopard is the option-command-space-bar search function. That’s it. Period. Preview, TextEdit and just about every formerly properly configured Apple application of the past have devolved significantly in useability. QuickTime Player 7 in Pro mode is just barely operating under Sierra but it still has a better interface the current QuickTime Player. I’m still running iTunes 9.02 as it has vastly superior interface to the current iTunes. Apple is the new MicroSoft. We’ve been “Borged”. The computer for the rest of us has been laid in its grave.

You can run Mac OS X Snow Leopard in Parallels in modern Mac releases. Why this matters is it allows you to virtualize PPC (PowerPC) Mac apps on the latest Macs despite having no official support for “Classic” or for “Rosetta”

IT’s not a simple process but it does work if you want to put Snow Leopard into a virtual machine in ‘macOS’

VMWare 2.02 runs my virtualized copy of Mac OS X Tiger perfectly in Snow Leopard on my MacMini2,1.

I simply throw my Mac Book Pro in the trash every November 1st and buy a new one with the new MacOS installed. That is Tim Cooks preferred method.

Your article gives me hope, now I just need some instructions to update while maintaining the use of Appleworks which I use and it is the reason I have not upgraded my Mac OS beyond 10.6.8. I don’t want to lose Appleworks so I’ve stayed with it as it is, but would love to move my system to the newest it can handle. I have an iMac, 3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo with memory, 4 GB 1067 MHzDDR3.

Peggy, if it works for you then I would stay put on 10.6.8 as that is a famously stable release of Mac OS system software that runs great. Just for some reference I have several Macs running older versions like you and they still work great. AppleWorks was transformed into Pages, for better or worse. With your Mac the main thing I would probably do is get more RAM as more memory always improves performance, as does an SSD hard disk, if you want performance boost, but why mess with software when what you have works?

My opinion is there is absolutely no need to update older systems when they work well as is, I firmly believe that after experiencing huge problems with Lion, Yosemite, and High Sierra. The old saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies to computers now more than ever before! Often the new updates make performance worse or stop compatibility of applications, or make things buggy or just worsen the overall experience, what the heck is the point of that? No thank you! The grass is NOT always greener!

A lot of these older versions of software have greater compatibility with many apps, so if app compatibility is a requirement sometimes you have to stay with those versions. And big deal, there is NOTHING ‘new’ in the new versions worth any hassle of losing compatibility or performance in my opinion.

Attempting to browse the internet is very frustrating. The browsers I’ve tried to download reject attempts due to my system being out of date and the two I have, Safari and Google Chrome, become less successful each day to connect. There is nothing wrong with my computer, but by my not updating the system I am being punished by the WWW gods who have locked me out of doing much on the internet.

Peggy, I’ve restored a number of older Macs, and for some, bit the bullet and upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.6.11 and then to 10.7. This provides a version of Safari that works on the modern Internet, and will run most modern OS X software.

Unfortunately, it won’t run PowerPC OS X software like 10.6 does. So for other Macs, I’ve stayed at 10.6.8 and installed FireFox. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1200697 has the details on the best version to install — it will work with most, but not all modern web pages.

Peggy, you can easily upgrade and still continue to create, edit and otherwise access your Appleworks files with Libreoffice. Libreoffice will open, edit and save your Appleworks files easily. It can also convert them to Micro$oft Office compatible files. I have been using Libreoffice for years moving to it from Appleworks when I departed Snow Leopard which is a HUGE security risk OS.

Accessing them is good to know about using LibreOffice, but I want to continue using Appleworks. If I upgrade my system that will end my use of Appleworks. I don’t want that to happen!

I have created a wine port of AppleWorks 6.2 that works on all intel macs that I’ve tested so far…

10.7.5 tested – 10.14.1 tested working perfectly!!

Keeping safari updated, how to update safari in system preferences.

It's a good practice to keep your web browser constantly updated for security reasons , but Apple Safari on Mac doesn't have an update button. Here's how to keep Safari updated.

Every year, Apple releases new features for Safari, and you usually install them without realizing it because they're linked to macOS updates that you get in System Preferences.

But because Safari is a browser, Apple often lets you update to the latest version of Safari without installing the next big OS release. For example, while Safari 14.0 came bundled in macOS Big Sur , macOS Catalina users can still update to it. Apple also provides regular security updates to older versions of Safari, which is the main reason why  we recommend that you keep it updated .

To update Safari, you'll have to use the Software Update feature in System Preferences. To get there, click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

In the menu that appears, choose the "System Preferences" option.

In System Preferences, click "Software Update."

The Software Update panel will show you whether there are any software updates available for your Mac. If there are, you have two choices.

If you want to install the latest operating system along with the latest version of Safari, just click the "Update Now" button and follow the process.

If you only want to install an update to Safari, click "More Info" under the list of available updates to see a detailed list of all updates.

After clicking "More info," a panel will appear listing the updates available for your Mac. Make sure that the "Safari" update is selected, and uncheck "macOS" if you don't want to install a system update along with it. When you're ready, click "Install Now."

After a while, the Safari update will be installed on your Mac.

Once the update process is finished, you can safely quit the System Preferences app using the red Close button in the corner of the window.

Since this process is somewhat confusing and non-obvious, we recommend enabling the auto-update feature to keep Safari and your Mac updated. Good luck!

Apple upgrades Safari for older versions of macOS

Version 11 of the browser adds intelligent tracking protection, a feature that has drawn the ire of the online advertising industry..

Apple upgraded the macOS Safari browser to version 11 this week, adding a feature that has drawn the ire of the online advertising industry.

Safari 11 can be downloaded to Macs running 2016’s Sierra or 2015’s El Capitan from the Mac App Store. Users can access that e-mart by clicking on the Apple menu at the top left of the screen, then choosing “App Store…” The browser upgrade should appear under the “Updates Available” section.

The browser will also be bundled with macOS 10.13, aka High Sierra, set to release Monday, Sept. 25 . This week’s upgrade targeted users who will, whether permanently or temporarily, stick with the older Sierra or El Capitan.

Apple simultaneously supports three editions of macOS, but only one version of Safari. When the Cupertino, Calif. company ships High Sierra next week, that means it will continue to supply patches for the past two years’ worth of operating systems — Sierra and El Capitan — but will stop support of 2014’s Yosemite and drop Safari 10 entirely.

Those running Yosemite and Safari 10 should consider switching to an alternate browser that still receives security fixes, like Google’s Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox.

Although Safari 11 patched several vulnerabilities that had existed in its predecessor, the most notable change was the introduction of what Apple called “Intelligent Tracking Protection,” or ITP.

ITP automatically deletes some browser cookies — the small bits of code used by sites to “remember” previous visitors — to crack down on cross-site tracking. The practice has been widely criticized by privacy advocates for its use by advertisers to follow users from site to site, then bombard them with ads similar to those clicked on previously. Also, those cross-site cookies will be ignored after 24 hours (unless the user during that time has again interacted with the original site).

Groups representing online advertising blasted ITP in an open letter published in AdWeek Sept. 14, claimed that Apple’s move would “sabotage the economic model for the Internet” and asked the company to reconsider before “disrupting the valuable digital advertising ecosystem.”

Apple declined, and in a statement of its own, said that the tracking cookies “collected [information] without permission and … used [that information] for ad re-targeting, which is how ads follow people around the Internet.”

Unlike browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, Safari is upgraded only once a year, when Apple issues new versions of macOS and iOS. Between those annual upgrades, Apple releases security patches and other bug fixes on a schedule that averages about every 10 weeks.

How to get apps for old iPhones and iPads

Apple devices that can't update to the latest version of iOS will eventually get "left behind" by apps when they update their platforms to require newer software updates. You can still download older versions of apps, but the way to do so is a bit hidden.

Certified pre-owned apps

If you've previously purchased or downloaded an app, then you'll be able to install older versions of it on hardware that doesn't support iOS 16.

All you need to do is power on your old device and open up the App Store . From there, click on the profile icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. It should have your profile picture or your initials on a gray background.

From there, you can tap on the Purchased button. Under My Purchases , you'll find a list of all the apps that you've previously downloaded and installed on your iPhones and iPads.

Be patient here — older devices may struggle under the load. It may take a minute or two for the App Store to pull up a list of purchased apps.

Once you see the list, you can scroll or search for the app in question. What you won't be able to find is apps that have been completely stricken from the app store, either by the developer, or by Apple's purge of unupdated apps.

So, there are some apps that are completely lost, even if you've been an iPhone or iPad owner from the beginning.

Downloading older versions of iPhone & iPad apps

Every app that you've previously purchased, but isn't currently on your device, will have an iCloud icon by it.

Tapping on this iCloud icon will install the app on your device. Don't tap away from this screen just yet, however. If the latest version of the app isn't compatible with the current iOS version you have, you'll have to wait a minute or so.

If this is the case, the App Store will display a notification saying that you can't download the latest version of the app. However, it will offer an alternative version of the app that you will be able to download.

Tap the Download button and that app will be on your aging iPhone or iPad.

This will technically be an "outdated" version of the app in question, but the upside is that you'll still be able to run it on the older device. You're not going to get the latest-and-greatest experience when you install an older version of an app.

In any case, you won't be able to select which version of the app you want. You'll be limited to the last version of the app that runs on your installed operating system.

A trick for getting apps you don't have

One issue with this method is that you're only going to be able to download apps that you've previously "purchased" in the past. However, there's a workaround that will let you get apps that you've never installed.

The workaround requires a newer iOS or iPadOS device. An additional limitation is that it's difficult to know whether the app in question actually still supports your old hardware. You'll have to figure that out by trial and error, but it's worth a shot.

All you need to do is purchase the app on your newer device. From there, it will show up in the "Purchased" pane of the App Store across all of your other devices.

Once it's in Purchased, you can download a compatible version on your older iPhones and iPads using the method outlined above.

This tip doesn't so much apply to devices that are just getting left behind, stuck on iOS 16. It is helpful for the iPhone 6 and older, though.

3 Ways to Install Older Versions of Apps on an Older iPhone

If your iPhone is too old, the App Store might not let you download new apps. Here are some easy workarounds so you can still get the apps you want.

If you use an old iPhone, chances are you've run into the problem of not being able to download new apps. This might be due to Apple no longer supporting iOS updates for your device or app developers optimizing software for the latest iOS release, which pushes you to buy a new iPhone. But what if you don't want to do that?

Luckily, you can download older versions of apps on your iPhone in several safe and legal ways. And it's far easier than you might think! So, here are all the options you have to download old versions of apps.

1. Let Apple Download the Last Compatible Version

This is the easiest option available to download an older version of an app, but one that you may not know about. That's because the App Store doesn't clarify whether an older version of an app exists.

On the app page, it's common to come across a message telling you that an app Requires iOS 13.0 or later , leading you to believe that your phone is incompatible. But this isn't always true. You can ignore that message and proceed to hit the download button anyway. When you do, the App Store will display a message asking if you want to download an older version of the app.

Here's what to do:

• Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for the app you want to download.
• Select the app name or icon to open the download page.
• Start downloading the app by hitting the Get button or tapping on the cloud symbol with the downward arrow.
• Wait for the App Store to display the message Download an older version of this app?
• Select the Download button to get the app.

If this doesn't work for you, you will see the following message: This application requires iOS 13.0 or later . In this case, there are a couple of other solutions you can try to solve the problem of how to download an older version of an app. But if you want to learn more about iOS before continuing, you can read our explanation of Apple's iPhone software .

2. Download Apps From Your Purchased List

The second option for how to download older versions of apps is to find them in your Purchased app history. This works well if you've recently reset your iPhone to factory settings, only to find out that some of the previously installed apps now require a later version of iOS to work.

Additionally, some people find that the App Store won't automatically give them an option to download a previous compatible version. This is despite having just had a working version installed on their phone. If you're one of those people, try downloading an app from your Purchased app list instead. We tried it out and discovered that we were able to get an app that we had first downloaded in 2015, one that's now only available on iOS 13.2 or later.

The Purchased app list is not just apps you have paid for; it is a complete history of apps you have downloaded using your iCloud account .

To download previously purchased apps:

• Open the App Store app on your phone and navigate to your Account page by selecting the profile icon in the top right corner of the screen.
• Select Purchased to bring up a list of all your purchased apps linked to that iCloud account.
• Scroll through the list to find the app you want to install.
• Hit the cloud icon with the downward arrow beside the app's name to begin downloading it.

3. Use a New Device to Add Apps to Your Purchased List

I've tried re-downloading apps from my Purchased list and found that it worked with no issues at all. But what do you do if you haven't purchased or downloaded an app in the past? One workaround is to use a newer iPhone running on a more recent iOS to download the app you want.

The key is to make sure you log into your iCloud account on the newer device to ensure that the app is saved to your history of app purchases. Once you download the app, head back to your old iPhone and try downloading it from your Purchased list, following the same steps as in the previous method.

To test this method, we used an iPhone XS to log into our iCloud account. We then downloaded an app that we knew we couldn't download on to our older device. Once we got the app, we went back to a spare iPhone 5S and downloaded the same app from our Purchased list, and it worked!

Here are the step-by-step instructions if you need more clarity:

• Log into your iCloud account using an iPhone running a recent iOS version.
• Open the App Store and download the app you want.
• Go back to your old iPhone device and open up the App Store .
• Navigate to your Account page by selecting the profile icon in the top right corner of the screen.
• Scroll through the list to find the app you just installed on the newer iPhone device.
• Hit the cloud icon with the downward arrow beside the app to begin downloading it.

Limitations of These Methods to Download Old Versions of Apps

The benefit of these methods is that they don't require you to download any third-party apps that may be dangerous or present security issues. But, of course, it doesn't mean our methods will work for every app on the App Store.

Some newer apps won't have backward compatibility—especially the ones made for more recent iOS devices. Apps like that won't have an older version available for you to download, and there's nothing you can do about it. Adding to this, the older your iPhone is, the less likely you are to find a compatible version of the app you're after.

But with how easy it is to see if an older app version is available, it's well worth giving these methods a go. If you suspect another issue stopping you from getting an app, don't worry, as there are several other fixes for apps not downloading on your iPhone that you can try.

Get Older Versions of Apps Easily on Your iPhone

With how Apple has designed the App Store, you can easily think that your favorite app is no longer compatible with your iPhone. But don't be fooled! Several apps offer older versions that will work on your old iPhone, and they're incredibly easy to get.

Always try the regular download method from the App Store first to see if an older version exists. You can also get any app that you've downloaded in the past by going to your Purchased list. And if all else fails, try downloading the app using a newer iPhone, and then find and install it from your purchase history.

Where do I download an older version of Safari for Windows

I need a specific version of Safari using WebKit 525.27; I have tracked it to Safari 3.2.1. The first Google hit on Apple points to:

I know this question has already been answered, but I like to give people options. Another option is filehippo.com. They have every version of a lot of programs out there including popular items such as Safari. Here is the link that would be relevant to this question. Below are some of the other very popular downloads that Filehippo has.

I t's no secret that Safari is the go-to browser for many Mac users . Sure, other browsers like Google Chrome have their advantages , especially if you're deep into Google's ecosystem, but using third-party browsers other than Safari on your Mac has downsides. Safari is optimized for macOS and integrates seamlessly with your other Apple devices like your iPhone and iPad by using Handoff.

If you've been a part of the Apple ecosystem for a while now, you're probably aware of Handoff, a very convenient Apple feature that allows you to begin a task on one of your devices, and pick up where you left off on another device.

Safari is no exception — Handoff allows you to start reading or watching something on your iPhone or iPad, and pick up where you left off on your Mac. This not only saves you the time of looking for a webpage but also makes jumping from one task to another extremely simple. Like any application, keeping Safari up to date is extremely important. Not only do new Safari updates come with newer features, but Apple also frequently rolls out updates to address security threats.

Now that you know it is a good idea to install Safari updates whenever they're rolled out, the real question is: How do you update Safari? Strangely enough, if your Apple device is updated to macOS Ventura or later , the only way to update Safari is to update your Mac itself.

How To Update macOS

While you can't update Safari without updating macOS, you can check which version of Safari you're currently using. To do so, open the Safari app on your Mac and click on Safari from the menu bar. Now, select About Safari from the dropdown menu. Once you do so, a dialogue box will appear. The version of Safari you're currently using should be mentioned below the "Safari" text.

If you'd like to update Safari, follow the steps below to update macOS:

Click the Apple menu in the menu bar and select System Settings from the dropdown menu.

Select General from the sidebar on the left.

Click Software Update and wait for a few seconds.

Now, if a new update is available, click Update Now next to Updates Available.

If a Safari-specific update is available, you can click More Info and select Safari from the "Updates are available for your Mac" section.

To avoid having to update macOS manually to update Safari, we recommend enabling automatic updates. This way, you won't miss out on new features and can rest easy, knowing that Apple has fixed any known security threats . To do so, click the info icon next to Automatic updates and toggle on the switch next to Download new updates when available, Install macOS updates, and Install Security Responses and system files.

what version of Safari is running on macOS Big Sur 11.7.10?

I currently have Big Sur v.11.5 on my 2020 macBook Air and have started having issues with my version of Safari (v.14.1.2) and would like to update Safari. 

Software update on my macBook offers an macOS update to Big Sur v.11.7.10 (as well as an update to Sonoma 14.4.1).

I’m not ready to try updating all the way to Sonoma, so I was hoping Big Sur 11.7.10 would be an easier update and include an update from my current Safari v.14.1.2.

Big Sur 11.7.10 includes Safari 16.6.1.

Personally, I would upgrade to Sonoma but you could also upgrade to Monterey or Ventura.

Monterey, Ventura and Sonoma all include the latest version of Safari, 17.4.1.

Thank you. I’m a bit nervous about updating all the way to Sonoma 14.1.2 from Big Sur 11.5. Is that typically the best way to do it, rather than updating a little at a time?

I’m afraid something will stop working.

I normally update/upgrade as soon as the new version is available but you shouldn't have any issue updating directly to Sonoma. As stated in my previous reply you can also upgrade to Monterey or Ventura.

Either way you choose to do it, you should have a backup first (a good idea at all times).

You can update your iPhone or iPad to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS wirelessly.

If the update doesn’t appear on your device, use your computer to update your device manually. Find out how to update your device manually if you’re using a Mac with macOS Catalina or later , or if you’re using a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier or a Windows PC .

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.

Plug your device into a power source and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi .

Customise automatic updates

Your device can update automatically overnight while it's charging.

Turn on automatic updates

Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

Tap Automatic Updates, then turn on Download iOS Updates.

Turn on Install iOS Updates. Your device will be updated automatically to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Some updates may need to be installed manually.

Install Rapid Security Responses

Rapid Security Responses deliver important security improvements quicker, before they are included in future software updates.

To get Rapid Security Responses automatically:

Tap Automatic Updates.

Make sure Security Responses & System Files is turned on.

If you don't want Rapid Security Responses to be installed automatically, you can install Rapid Security Responses like software updates .

If you need to remove a Rapid Security Response:

Go to Settings > General > About.

Tap iOS Version.

Tap Remove Security Response.

You can reinstall the Rapid Security Response later, or wait for it to be installed permanently as part of a standard software update.
