8 Incredible Walking Tours In England

england walking tour

  • Activities and Interests

  • United Kingdom

England is a walker’s paradise. With hills and valleys, lakes and mountains, moorland and coastlines, this country has some of the most breathtaking scenery, and the best way to see it is by walking. But aside from rambling the trails and tracks and stopping off for a pint in a country pub, there are also some incredible city walking tours and some interesting arts-based walks you can do. You can book organized tours with dedicated guides who know their area well, or you can be your own guide and take things at your own pace. To get you started, here are 8 incredible walking tours to try in England.

1. The Lake District — Literary Inspiration On A Grand Scale

This tour from Inntravel is the perfect introduction to walking in the Lake District National Park, an area of high fells and shimmering waters, and also home to a fascinating literary culture. Walkers stay in three high quality country inns, finishing in style at a four-star retreat in Grasmere. The trip begins on the shores of Windermere, England’s largest lake, where a circular route takes walkers toward Ambleside, the iconic Lakeside town, past Stockghyll Force, a waterfall that tumbles 21 meters (around 60 feet),  and to the summit of Wansfell Pike.

After taking a boat across Windermere and crossing the fell to Hawkshead, home to an impressive collection of Beatrix Potter artwork, guests arrive in Coniston. From here, there is a choice of routes: a challenging hike to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston or a gentler, but equally scenic walk to Tarn Hows through coniferous woodland. The final base is Grasmere, reached by a walk past Cathedral Quarry, then more fell walks and time to visit Dove Cottage, the former home of William Wordsworth.

Pro Tip: Make sure you pick up some traditional Grasmere gingerbread from The Grasmere Gingerbread Shop. It’s unlike any other gingerbread you’ll ever taste — spicy and crumbly and completely unique.

2. England Coast To Coast

Wilderness England offers an accessible adventure for all on this 12-day trip that takes hikers from St. Bee’s Head on the shores of the Irish Sea to Robin Hood’s Bay, crisscrossing three of northern England’s National Parks and covering 128 miles on foot. Beginning in the Lake District, guests will hike through Ennerdale Forest and Honister Pass, visit Wordsworth’s house in Grasmere before taking a steamship journey across Ullswater. Heading next into the Yorkshire Dales, there are stops in charming villages such as Gunnerside and Ravenstonedale and hikes through the rolling scenery of Swaledale. The third and final National Park is the North York Moors where, after hikes in the brilliantly named Great Fryup and Blakely Ridge, the group arrives at the North Sea. This is quite a hike, so it’s only suitable for experienced walkers.

3. The Cotswolds Way

The Cotswolds is an area of England that needs no introduction. The chocolate box charm of its honey-hued villages and its rolling scenery is famous the world over. Walkers on this self-guided trip that follows the 102 miles of the Cotswolds Way , perhaps England’s prettiest long-distance trail, will see plenty of the Cotswolds as expected, but also another side of this area, too. Walkers will stride past Belas Knap, a 5000-year-old Neolithic burial chamber, follow old tramway routes, and see the remains of antique limestone kilns and quarries. Beginning in the medieval town of Chipping Campden, home to an incredible 256 historic buildings, the route will wind south over nine days before finishing in the regency city of Bath.

Thermae Bath Spa at dusk

4. Bespoke Walking Tours With The Gainsborough Bath Spa

The Gainsborough Bath Spa has partnered with The Bath Tour Guide, creating bespoke (custom) tours. Choose from two-hour strolls taking in the top highlights or daylong adventures uncovering the city’s secrets. Literary buffs can rejoice with a specialized Jane Austen book tour and Bridgerton fans can marvel at Bath’s Georgian splendor while admiring the Bath Assembly Rooms where parts of the hit lockdown series were filmed. For something a little more unconventional, the Laugh at Bath tour ensures a light-hearted and comedic walk through Bath’s history with a mischievous tour guide, Jamie.

After a year of separation, an uplifting comedy walking tour is a great chance to catch up on some overdue amusement. Guests will be picked up from the hotel to embark on a journey through the city, exploring famous sights and landmarks, from beautiful Bath Abbey to the iconic Royal Crescent. Led by experienced guides, families, and friends can uncover hidden gems and lesser-known delights, so even locals might find a new favorite corner of this stunning Somerset city.

Pro Tip: Be sure to try out the Thermae Spa while you’re in Bath. With a rooftop mineral pool, naturally warm, aroma steam rooms, celestial relaxation room, and a generous ice room, it’s the perfect way to spend a couple of hours in the city of the spa.

London photography tour.

5. London Food, Fashion, And Photography Walks

Join East Londoner Simon as he guides groups around the iconic markets of London. Choose one or more markets from Camden, Borough, Brick Lane, Portobello Road or Columbia Road, or Simon’s very own Hackney market. Along the way, groups will meet the locals and get an insight into true market life in London. Visit historical spots to hear local history, from Shakespeare to WWII to today, spot some street art, stop for coffee and get under the skin of the area in a way only a tour with a local can. You can also enjoy a unique view of London with a private night photography tour . Capture London’s famous landmarks in the evening light, from the iconic London Bridge to the tallest building in the city, The Shard.

6. Go Foraging In Falmouth With An Expert Local Guide

Learn to identify the tastiest and most nutritious edible plants, from delicious seaweeds to bright summer berries and the freshest young spring greens. Zoe, a guide on the Tours By Locals platform will give an introductory talk at Swanpool before ambling to the woods, fields, and hedges to spend a few hours collecting a diversity of local seasonal wild food. Take a walk along the beach and out to the rocks by Blue Flag Gyllyngvase Beach and collect some of the tastiest seaweed in Cornwall, then sit down and enjoy your foraging feast. This is a lovely, gentle walk, suitable for all fitness levels, with a focus on foraging and enjoying the area, rather than distance.

Bicycle near a marina in Plymouth, England.

7. Plymouth Walking Tour

From the classic 1950s architecture of the rebuilt city to the scenic grandeur of the expanse of the Hoe, Plymouth never fails to surprise visitors. The walking tour showcases the expanse of Plymouth Hoe and the old medieval town, while also taking in the views across the waters of the Sound which is soon going to be the first UK marine park. The tour is hosted by local guide, Chrissie , who has been a Blue Badge Tourist Guide in England’s southwest for many years.

Pro Tip: Don’t miss a tour of the Plymouth Gin Distillery , one of the oldest distilleries in the country, where you’ll find out how gin is made and you’ll get the chance to taste some. For more ideas of things to do in the city by the sea, take a look at Best Things To Do In Historic Plymouth, England, The City By The Sea .

8. North Downs Way Arts Trail

The North Downs Way Art Trail is designed to entice visitors to stop, rest and enjoy some of the beautiful views along the 153-mile-long trail which runs from Dover in Kent to Farnham in Surrey. The trail and the artworks will all reflect the special characteristics of each beautiful location, and are all made from sustainable materials, and will also act as sculptural seats to allow visitors a chance to sit, reflect and relax while being surrounded by wonderful and inspiring art, history and nature. In addition, each piece will be supported by a range of downloadable self-guided walking routes that will make visiting the sites even easier.

All you need to know about British Walking Tours

What are walking tours.

A walking tour takes you around a city, park, historical site, or any attraction, on foot. Whether you stroll down cobblestone streets, wander ancient ruins or hike through a forest, you’ll get an intimate look at the local landscapes and culture on a walking tour. Even better, you’ll get some exercise in the fresh air while appreciating the close-up details that are often missed when you whizz by in a car.

Is Windsor Castle worth visiting?

As the world’s largest and oldest occupied castle, Windsor Castle is definitely worth visiting. With almost 1,000 years of history starting with William the Conqueror, the castle is now one of the Queen’s grand homes. We’ll take you to see the castle’s elegant State Apartments with intricate ceilings, artworks and Queen Mary’s Doll House, and St. George’s Chapel where Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle.

What palaces can you visit in London?

While Buckingham Palace is the most iconic palace in London, there are a few more that are well worth a trip. Be sure to check out the famous Kensington Palace, the Kew Palace and stunning Kew Gardens, the regal Hampton Court Palace, and the historic Palace of Westminster. And don’t forget the Tower of London, officially known as Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London.

When should I go to Ireland and Scotland?

If you’re looking for the best things to do in the United Kingdom, you can’t miss the highlights of Northern Ireland and Scotland. See the iconic cities like Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh, then discover the spectacular landscapes. Marvel at the Giant’s Causeway, cross to the Isle of Skye, and explore the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands. And that’s just scratching the surface!

Coast To Coast Walking Tours

Beginning the Coast to Coast walk along the green cliffs of England | Tim Charody

Destination

Bosnia and herzegovina, czech republic, liechtenstein, netherlands, north macedonia, switzerland, türkiye/turkey, united kingdom, bike & boat, multi-activity, vessels & boats, advanced search, coast to coast walk, discover the uk's iconic walking trail, the coast to coast.

Devised by renowned walker and writer Alfred Wainwright in 1973, the Coast to Coast Walk is the most famous long-distance trail in UK. At 315km or 195 miles, the Coast to Coast Walk uses a network of public footpaths tracks, permissive paths and access land to cross England’s huge variety of landscapes, terrain, villages and three unique national parks – the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

Walkers are encouraged to dip their boots in the Irish Sea the before setting off and in the North Sea at the end of the trail.

Starting in the tiny Cumbrian seaside village of St Bees, the trail climbs steeply into the Lake District National Park, home to spectacular lake and mountain scenery, before crossing classic rolling farmland, the Pennine Hills and the mystical cairns atop Nine Standards Rigg.

Follow the beautiful River Swale to the historic market town of Richmond before leaving the Yorkshire Dales to cross the low-lying Vale of Mowbray and linking up with the North York Moors National Park. From here the trail undulates spectacularly before depositing you at Robin Hood's Bay.

As you make your way across the Coast to Coast trail on foot or by bike, enjoy staying in specially handpicked hotels, guesthouses and pubs, where you’ll come to appreciate just how much a full English breakfast will set you up for a long day of walking or cycling.

Because of the popularity of this trail, people often fall into the trap of thinking that it is easy. However, our trips on the Coast to Coast trail are amongst our most challenging but rewarding tours in Europe.

Experience the diversity of England by choosing a guided or self guided walking or cycling trip on the Coast to Coast trail.

The climate of northern England is variable with rainfall occurring throughout the year (though more likely from October to April). The sunniest month is July. On average temperatures between April and October range from 4°C (39°F) -19°C (67°F), although it may be slightly cooler on higher sections. Being prepared with the correct clothing and equipment for the conditions is important as the going may be muddy underfoot in wet weather.

The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is an area of gentle hills, but with a maximum altitude of just over one thousand feet, walking here is within the reach of almost anyone. Yet, those same hills mean that wonderful, dramatic views are possible with comparatively little effort – views down to gem-like villages, and across valleys and plains to the Black Mountains in Wales, the Malvern Hills and the Forest of Dean, another beautiful part of Gloucestershire beyond the River Severn.

The abbey, visible from afar, is unmistakable, even though it is much diminished in stature (in all senses). It was founded as a Benedictine monastery around 675 either by an Irish monk named Maildubh (from whom, some say, the town gets its name) or the scholar-poet...

"Dear Christopher,

Kay and I thank you for a wonderful experience in England. Your personal interest in our travels and research was much appreciated.

Please feel comfortable using us a reference for any future clients that might request references. I have attahed a letter to Ms. G. R recommending and complimenting your service to us.

If you ever travel to Tennessee, we would be happy to return the favor.

Tennessee State Senator, USA

"Hi Ann and Chris,

Just had to contact you to say the holiday in the Cotswolds was fantastic. The accomodation was all very good - the Broadway Hotel and the Redesdale (Morton) were exceptional.

I was also amazed how efficient the taxis were for ourselves and the luggage. Your directions (maps etc.) were so easy to follow and we felt we could relax all the time. So, thanks so much for all the effort which must have gone into the organisation, we really appreciate it.

Kind regards"

"Hi Ann / Chris,

Chris, we had a wonderful time. A few notes are attached with minor suggestions about directions. The snafu over lodging in Winchcombe was handled gracefully, and we think the Lion and Wesley House were actually a step up from the White Hart. We found excellent evening dining options along the way, and pub lunches were always available enroute.

Trust your wife and baby are doing well.

Best regards"

Just a quick note to say thanks immensely for everything. The maps, routes and information was a great help to making our visit to the Cotswolds a very enjoyable experience.

Best Regards"

J.M, United Kingdom

I would just like to let you know that we had a wonderful holiday & all the hotels that we stayed in were superb! Thankyou very much for arranging it all for us as we had a fabulous holiday staying in complete luxury. We loved the Cotswolds & would love to return again before too long.

We really enjoyed our anniversary stay at The Lords of the Manor, especially the exquisite meal in the restaurant. Thankyou again for sorting out such a special treat for us!

We won't hesitate to use your company & services again.

Coast to Coast Hike England

Coast to coast.

  • Hike across the whole of England from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea
  • Experience dramatic mountains, rolling green valleys and heather-clad moors
  • Recharge in charming English villages like Grasmere and Patterdale
  • Follow the ancient paths which inspired Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter
  • Become part of the ‘coast to coast’ comradery as you complete a favorite route of the Brits
  • Have afternoon tea with jam and scones, a pint in the pub and fish & chips on the beach

Spanning across the entirety of Northern England, this 200 mile Coast to Coast hiking trail is a journey through three of England’s most beautiful and rugged National Parks.

As the trail winds its way over the Lake District National Park mountains and into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, opportunities are endless to experience historical landmarks or traditional pubs with local ale. Revel in ancient farming practices as you pass mile upon mile of sheep pastures and hand build dry stone walls. Harking back to classical nineteenth century novelists Bronte and Jane Austin, the trail rambles over the moody North York Moors and descents into the charming coastal town of Robin Hoods Bay.

In 1973, Alfred Wainwright laid the foundations of the route, and today, Macs has expert first-hand knowledge to send you on his path.

Our most popular route is the 18 day complete trail , while shorter tours are also available for folks who just want a taste of the of the C2C or want to do one half of the route. Whichever route you choose your hiking vacation will be packed full of beautiful countryside and historic sites.

‘Surely there cannot be a finer itinerary for a long-distance walk! … The countryside traversed is beautiful almost everywhere, yet extremely varied in character, with mountains and hills, valleys and rivers, heather moors and sea-cliffs combining in a pageant of colourful scenery.’ A Coast to Coast Walk, 1973

Wainwright’s first visit to the Lake District in 1930 took him to the summit of Orrest Head, about which he said ‘those few hours cast a spell which changed my life'.

Since he made it famous, thousands have hiked this route in search of Wainwright’s legend as they follow his pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells.

england walking tour

I can honestly say that it was the best vacation of my life! We loved every minute of it and with your planning it went without a hitch! We did manage to get turned around twice during the walk, which we put down to our own error by misreading the map instructions, but were easily able to get back on track. All of the accommodations provided friendly owners, great breakfasts and locations.

We just came back from a 4 day hiking trip of the Cotswolds Triangle. We had a fantastic time! Everything was very well organised and attention was paid to every single detail (e.g. luggage tags, a plastic cover for our booklet with directions, good suggestions for wining and dining). Communication with the company leading up to our trip, also went very smoothly. I would definitely use Cotswolds Walks again and would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to explore the beautiful Cotswolds.

We all agreed that we had a wonderful time in the Cotswolds and thank you so much for making it a very special holiday.  Our days were planned so well and it was nice to have everything taken care of ahead of time for us.  You live in a special part of the world and it was a great experience to visit it.  A big thank you to Robert as well - such a pleasure to walk around with him for a couple of days.

My wife and I were initially circumspect for the need of such detail your guide provided and we laughed at the thought and at some of the guide’s vocabulary, but a chance meeting with an American couple the night before our first day on the Walk quickly dispelled any doubt. They had just used your services for their Walk and said to follow the guide and we wouldn’t go wrong. We did, and they were right! Again, thank you for taking good care of us.

Our luxury tours are tailor-made to provide the best possible experience, fully immersing you in our amazing destinations while completely eliminating any-and-all stress. Your Itinerary

Arriving into Chippenham railway station, our friendly local guides will transfer you straight into the Cotswolds to begin the tour. Travelling via the picturesque Castle Combe, we enjoy lunch at The Castle Inn and hike between some of the region’s best unknown villages. Leaving the tourist trail well and truly behind, we meet a local dry stone walling expert, before ending our day with dinner at the glamorous Brasserie at our first hotel, Lucknam Park.

Today we walk from Ashwicke to the Roman city of Bath, meandering along the canal before spending the afternoon exploring this ancient city with a local expert. From the Roman Baths, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman remains, to the Royal Crescent overlooking the city, we’ll ensure you see all this historic location has to offer. With the day drawing to an end, we journey back to Lucknam Park for a spot of wine tasting and a Michelin star dining experience at Hywel Jones.

Travelling north through the Cotswolds, today’s itinerary takes us to the Slad Valley, where we follow in Laurie Lee’s footsteps as we traverse this beautiful hideaway. After lunching at an award-winning local pub, we spend the afternoon tracing our way to Painswick, ‘The Queen of the Cotswolds’, where we’ll find our next luxurious hotel.

This morning we transfer to Cheltenham for a hike around Cleeve Hill to Belas Knapp, before lunching at The Lion Inn in Winchcombe. From here, we visit Sudley Castle, where we learn about its 1,000 years of fascinating heritage and the pivotal role it has played in English history. We then enjoy dinner at The Falcon Inn before spending another night at the Painswick Hotel.

Heading across the country, we spend our final day exploring Oxford. Beginning with a local walking tour of the city’s most unusual hidden gems, we then tread the historic hallways of Oxford University’s famous collages, before enjoying a champagne punting race along the Thames. In the evening, we enjoy one last dinner together and relax in the sumptuous Old Parsonage Hotel.

With a heavy heart, this morning we bid farewell. Our Active England guides will escort you to Oxford railway station, where you’ll be able to easily catch a direct train to London. Wherever your journey takes you next, though, we’ll provide any assistance you might need with your onward travel.

Where are the Cotswolds? The Cotswolds National Landscape (previously referred to as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – AONB) stretches from Bath in the South to Stratford Upon Avon in the North, and across to Oxford in the East. An iconic pocket of England with breath-taking natural beauty, rolling hills and historic towns and villages, built from the golden Cotswold stone.

What is the best way to get out of London into the Cotswolds? The best way into the Cotswolds from London and most major cities is by a direct train from Paddington into Oxford, Moreton-in-Marsh or Bath Spa. Our trips begin from mainline stations so you can arrive relaxed, refreshed and ready to start your tour. If you prefer to drive, please confirm with our team the best place to park for each tour.

Can I join a tour as a solo traveller? Of course! All our trips are open for single travellers to join. You will have a great time on our walking tours whether travelling on your own, as a couple, family or group, meeting like-minded people on our guided trips, or choosing your own adventure on our self-guided tours. “As a single female, I would not hesitate to go on another Active England trip as a solo traveller”. S.G.

How hilly are the Cotswolds? The Cotswolds are a range of hills, with its name stemming from ‘Cote’ meaning sheep enclosure and ‘wold’ meaning hills. There are therefore lots of hills and incredible views from the top! However, you will able to miss out some of the steeper inclines – or add in some hillier walk for those looking to stretch their legs. There are routes for everyone and with our routes your guide will tailor your tour to your preferences.

Why go on a guided holiday? Our guides are the beating heart of our tours and can make all the difference to the enjoyment of your walking holiday – so we make sure to choose them VERY carefully! They are driven, knowledgeable, know how to have A LOT of fun and importantly will take you on the ‘road less travelled’ across the Cotswolds. They know the best spots for making your walking tour truly different and truly magical!
