  • Icychick 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous experience So glad we decided to take the overnight cruise through Milford Sound. A beautiful boat, welcoming staff, great local food and wine. The cabins are well designed, with comfortable beds, powerful shower ( I would agree the loo needs a shelf) nice linens and beautiful views from your cabin A great experience to cruise through the sound, see the waterfalls, kayak, have a hot tub on the upper deck and all so leisurely. The staff went out of their way to make this a very special trip. Thank you Jimmy, Liv, Leish and Chris, ( sorry for the crew I have not mentioned). It was a very memorable trip and highly recommended. We will be singing your praises. Read more Written 5 February 2024
  • 242bernardl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An Awesome Trip. Ticked off the bucket list! This 6 day trip of from Doubtful Sound down to Preservation inlet is an absolute treat. Our crew were knowledgeable, friendly, engaged and helpful, and the food absolutely top notch all trip. The boat is comfortable and fit for purpose. And then the scenery, the environment and the history. . Fiordland is a beautiful place, with lots to see. Regular trips and walks off the boat are interesting too. A real adventure and getting to and from the boat is part of it with the boat ride on Lake Manapouri, the bus ride over the Wilmont pass and a helicopter ride back to Te Anau to finish. • GeorgeNZ44 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Incredible Fiordland on MV Jewel We recently completed the Fiordland Discovery 6 night southern Fiords trip on the MV Jewel. We did this with 6 friends and another 6 passengers. We left from Te Anau joining the boat at Doubtful Sound and returning by Helicopter from Preservation inlet 7 days later. The weather was predominantly inclement with rain, wind and cold however this did not spoil the trip as these conditions tend to show Fiordland at its best. Our group were well experienced with boats and found the Jewel to be perfect for the conditions. The boat was dry, warm and handled the rough sea conditions comfortably. All the crew were outstanding and contributed greatly to our wonderful experience. Rob (owner and skipper) and Dave were brilliant hosts with great senses of humour and knowledge of the the flora, fauna, geography and history of the area. The cuisine provided by Mateus (Chef) and the service and guiding from Kiahani (Raratonga) and Allie (Sweden) were all outstanding. Particularly the seafood meals harvested from the boat. The 7 days on Jewel passed very quickly. This was capped off by an outstanding Helicopter ride from Preservation Inlet to Te Anau captained by Sir Richard (Hannibal) Hayes who flew over beautiful parts of Western Southland for added interest. We have been very fortunate to do several land and sea trips but this was probably the best trip of its kind we had ever done. Read more Written 3 October 2021

A week spent travelling through fiords from Doubtful to Milford Sound. Loved kayaking in the Sounds then having a warm dry room on the boat to return to. Three exceptional meals each day with a wonderful array of fresh seafood throughout the week. Experienced crew to make you feel safe at all times. Lots of fun and humour from our pick-up in Queenstown till we returned. Loved every minute of it. Thankyou Rob, Dave, Matt, Jack, Juan and Hal for making it an unforgettable week. Hope to be back. • nzp0ppy 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Stunning Fiordland We did the 7 day six night fiordland trip. As others have said - this isnt a luxury trip, but the ship is comfortable. There is no daily servicing of cabins. in fact, crew dont come into your cabins at all during the trip. Unfortunately as others have said, the food is nice, but there isnt enough. We went eight hours between breakfast and lunch one day and no morning tea provided, So be warned - take peanuts, crackers, cheese and snacks with you. I feel serving alcohol and having no snacks is wrong. And i will always never under appreciate my beer with snacks in the future. commercial processed biscuits for afternoon tea was poor. Id like to see some morning and afternoon teas. Fruit was available, but it doesnt fill you up. Some of the males on our trip didnt have enough to eat. I even felt dizzy and hungry. However, the boat is comfortable (especially the top cabin and definitely go for that with the wonderful views if you can). The scenery is amazing, the wildlife awesome. We enjoyed the kayking and walks. It would be five stars if little things were improved, Four crew for 18 passengers werent enough. And 8 kayaks for 18 passengers werent enough either. Would I recommend the trip - yes. But take your own snacks. Read more Written 21 October 2020

This overnight cruise was very expensive so was expecting boutique type boat but it was very simply decorated and plain. It was clean. Captain very controlling. Was told to watch video after meal BEFORE he’d open hot tub! Then when a few of us did get in hot tub not one crew member checked on us to see if we needed more towels, water or another beer. Hot tub closed at 10pm and the bar. Weather very choppy. Ok when we anchored captain said we’d stay at anchor to have breakfast so it was semi calm but that didn’t happen he left then told us to all go to breakfast, by that time it was very rough. Sick people. Could wait to get off. Capt made announcement when we got off boat to make reviews if we liked it but not to say anything if we didn’t!!!!! Huge waste of money nothing special. Only good thing was chef did a good evening meal!!!! That was it Read more Written 3 December 2019
  • nesswil1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highly Recommend - AMAZING!! What a place! Recommend overnight cruise to get the full experience. Not rushed, cruised, watched the landscape change, a kayak and very (very) quick swim (cold). Very enjoyable dinner with wine and woke from a comfortable sleep to the impressive Milford Sound and view of the mountains in the morning. If you are lucky like we were, a little rain meant plenty of waterfalls during our cruise and snow overnight ensured picturesque snow capped peaks surrounded us. Enjoyed the hot tub and the general ambience and friendliness of all aboard. Book it and Enjoy! Thanks to Carl, Jack, Drew and Damien for ensuring our stay was incredible. AMAZING!! Weather was moody so great for photography. Boat is extremely comfortable, warm and well set up for this over night trip. Our room - the Captain Cook was spacious and very clean with nice shower. The skipper Rob and his crew couldn't have been more helpful and very knowledgeable with the family having lived in the Fiordland area for many years. Food was excellent. Fresh lobster and blue cod were on the menu. This remote area of New Zealand is well worth the effort to explore. The road trip in from Te Anau very scenic but allow plenty of time to stop along the way as beautiful water falls, walks etc. Would highly recommend. A trip not to be missed. • WarwickR18 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Walking in the footsteps of Cook My wife and I and two friends decided that we needed to see Fiordland before we passed over. It was left to me to book a suitable tour for four. Fiordland Discovery seemed to fill our requirements. What a wonderful surprise to have such a welcome and to be able to participate in six days of discovery , in an area of NZ few have had the privilege to enjoy. Rob , the skipper and owner, along with his sons and crew, gave us an experience we could not fault. The weather in that part of NZ is always variable and as we had selected to travel in winter, we thought we may suffer from the cold. Not so, it was cosy and the accommodation was every thing we could ask for.If you love nature and want to experience firsthand what NZ was like in Captain Cook's day, take the plunge and book as soon as you can to make sure you can see and feel what we did.Rob is a legend. Overnight Cruise With Fiordland Discovery – The Best Way To Experience Milford Sound

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 3 1

Being a New Zealand travel fanatic I’ve been to Milford Sound on several day cruises, and scenic flights and recently I even walked there on foot along  the Milford Track .

When I received the opportunity to do an overnight cruise I thought, well there’s not actually that much more I can see or learn about Milford Sound. Oh, how wrong was I?

If you are  planning a road trip around New Zealand , staying overnight in Milford Sound should be on your bucket list!

Why is the overnight cruise on Milford Sound worth it?

My overnight experience on Milford Sound with Fiordland Discovery taught me more in a single night than I learnt in weeks of exploring Milford Sound on my own.

This was mainly down to 3 things:

  • The limited numbers aboard gave us more personal time with the boat crew.
  • The knowledge that the crew possessed and shared with us.
  • My eagerness to learn as much as I could about this amazing place.

My review of the overnight cruise in Milford Sound with Fiordland Discovery

Let’s start from the beginning. Upon arriving at the Milford Sound Ferry Terminal, we were warmly greeted and given our lanyards that confirmed our participation in the overnight experience. After being ushered on board the vessel – the aptly named Fiordland Jewel, we were personally introduced to every member of the boat’s crew from the porter to the captain.

After a quick, but essential, safety briefing we embarked on our sunset cruise on the Fjord. The fact that there were only 12 of us, not including the boat crew, and that we were in one of the most remote areas of the World, immediately made us feel like we were the only people left on this planet.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 13

For me, one of the  biggest advantages of an overnight cruise  is the lack of what I like to call the ‘conveyor belt issue’. Day cruises are constantly boarding and departing, forming a continuous stream of boats. This certainly distracts you from the grandeur of the fjord.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 16

Thankfully, the day cruises were finished by the time our overnight experience with  Fiordland Discovery  started.  It meant we had the whole place to ourselves!  If we wanted to wait at a particular waterfall we could, because there wasn’t a queue behind us.

When we came across a pod of dolphins we stopped and enjoyed their presence for a while.  There was never a rush.

dolphins in Milford Sound

With the limited numbers aboard our vessel, we had the opportunity to ask questions and interact with the knowledgeable captain and staff.

The name of every mountain, every animal and every waterfall intertwined with personal anecdotes and facts that never felt recited.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 7

We stayed in a private twin ensuite room. It was modern, clean and had everything we needed including USB docking stations, plug sockets, towels and toiletries. It was like a fancy hotel room but with much better views!

Speaking about the views!  One huge window at the foot of the beds gave uninterrupted vistas of wherever we were docked or sailing through.  Just imagine waking up to it!

Before dinner, we had the opportunity to go on a  sightseeing tour in the smaller boat or go kayaking as the sunset over the mountains.  I did both. I also captured some stunning images of Jack paddling away into the sunset. The light conditions were certainly in my favour.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 19

Whilst kayaking we had a  private guide come along with us  giving us information about the surroundings. We were also free to go explore if we wanted some alone time.

The brave ones could also choose to  dive into the chilly water from the helipad!  Interestingly when I jumped in, I expected to taste salt water but the fresh water from rivers and rain sits on top of the salt water! It was really quite refreshing.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 1

After working up our appetite and given a chance to shower and freshen up for dinner, we were treated to a 3-course extravagance including  freshly caught lobster with wasabi mayonnaise, New Zealand Blue Cod with pancetta and home-made ice cream with berry coulis and pistachio snap.  YUM!

The menu does highly depend on what’s freshly caught and what seasonal vegetables are available. Vegetarian, vegan, lactose-free and all other dietary requirements can be catered for.

After a glass of wine enjoyed with good company,  we spent the evening in the hot tub on the top deck,  watching the stars turn slowly above our heads. That night I slept like a baby being gently rocked by the waves in the bay, where we anchored for the night.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 22

When we awoke, we could tell we were moving but it was still dark.  We were getting out in the fjord for the sunrise.  Again, all alone apart from the dolphins and seals. Once the sun rose, breakfast was served. Eggs any style, bacon, toast, cereals, fruit, tea and coffee plus yoghurts and bottles of water.

After our sunrise cruise, we started our return to the Milford Sound Ferry Terminal and arrived just as the first-day cruises were leaving. Perfect timing.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise 6

As we were helped with our bags, the staff gave us heartfelt goodbyes and wished us well on our onward journey.

I couldn’t recommend Fiordland Discovery enough. There was literally nothing I could complain about even if I wanted to. The boat was modern, the food tasty and the staff friendly but that’s not all!

Being alone in Milford Sound kayaking at sunset in Deep Water Cove, and waking up to the view of Mitre Peak is a top experience and  no other boat tour company operating in Milford Sound will give you that.

These are the experiences that you pay for and what make the overnight cruises offered by Fiordland Discovery so sought after and unique.

How to book the Fiordland Discovery overnight cruise?

Luxury Milford Sound Overnight Cruise

  • Ask a Question

Description

Milford Sound is undoubtedly the most spectacular of the twelve major fiords in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park. Known by many as the "eighth wonder of the world" it is home to majestic peaks such as the infamous Mitre Peak, Stirling Falls waterfall and ancient luscious beech rainforests. Join the Fiordland Jewel for a luxury overnight cruise to explore the area in style.

Not only is the scenery breathtaking in Milford Sound but the wildlife is abundant. On a typical cruise, you may come across seals, dolphins and penguins and that's just above the surface! Following dinner, you will get the opportunity to view underwater footage captured by the ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) below the surface of Milford Sound and the surrounding fiords on screens from the comfort of the main saloon.

After an afternoon of exploring the fiord your boat will anchor for the night. Hi WILL YOU BE OPERATING IN OCTOBER THIS YEAR? THANKS VICKI

Thank you for your question, regarding the Fiordland Discovery Overnight Cruise in Milford Sound. Unfortunately, they are not operating in October, but they are in December.

Comment by: ETG on 7th Jan 22 at 11:52

Does the overnight cruise operate in June?

On your site it's full or can not book for Tuesday or Wednesday the double bed room. Here I can, wish to believe? Is it free?

Hi, we are a family of 2 adults and 1 child, if we book 3 "Single Bunks (3 Occupants)" are we sure not to share the bedroom with someone else ? Do you have a minimum number of participants to confirm the cruise? What are your cancellation / refund conditions?

Heya, They do not sell the cabins by the bed, if you were to book the Resolution Quad for 3 people then it would be a private cabin for you. They would not sell the remaining bed. Their cancellation policy is at least 5 days prior to arrival with full refund given up until this time. There is no minimum numbers to operate the cruise.
