ghost new zealand tour

Useful information and an overview of what to expect those intending to tramp The Old Ghost Road.

ABOUT THE OLD GHOST ROAD

In the North West corner of the South Island of New Zealand a ghost has awakened. A long-forgotten gold miners’ road has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.

A proud member of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, the volunteer-driven Mokihinui-Lyell Backcountry Trust has partnered with a range of other entities to make The Old Ghost Road a reality. It’s almost as if the engineers from the 1870’s knew we were coming! The spirits of the old miners and track builders are inescapable and four ghost towns populate the route. The Old Ghost Road is quite literally an 85km-long outdoor museum.

Our volunteers and supporters know that each generation grows up in an increasingly urbanised environment. Our connection to the land dims. Here, on The Old Ghost Road, heritage, wilderness, accessibility and storytelling come together in an unforgettable way. We invite you to join the journey……

Muscle and Dreams - Creating The Old Ghost Road

Created by  VISIONCO ,  Muscle & Dreams – Creating The Old Ghost Road  is an engaging documentary following a keen group of enthusiasts as they transform an idea for a gold miners road from the 1800s into New Zealand’s longest continuous single-track.

A hair-raising ghost tour of new zealand’s most haunted city.

  • Share Story

Andrew Smith has been running ghostly walking tours of Dunedin for 25 years, and admits he still gets scared silly some nights. Tara Ward joins him for a stroll.

It’s nine o’clock on a dark Wednesday evening in Ōtepoti, and I’m standing on a street corner listening to a man dressed in full Victorian garb. He’s telling me a chilling story that I’ve never heard before, about the 1962 unsolved murder of a local lawyer which took place in a nearby building. A parcel bomb was delivered in the morning post, the blast blew a hole in the first floor window, and people apparently reported seeing a severed hand flying through the air.

Suddenly, a pale, floppy hand hits me in the chest. Is it a five-fingered ghost? Is it THE hand, only now landing from 1962? Thankfully, it’s merely a rubber prop launched unexpectedly from the pocket of Andrew Smith, the barber and haunted historian who runs award-winning ghost walking tours around Dunedin . Moments earlier, his deep voice had boomed out from the darkness across the street. “Are you looking for a ghost?” he’d asked. I wasn’t sure. All I knew was that Halloween was fast approaching, and if I was going to write a story about a ghost tour, there was no better time to do it.

As Smith and I shook hands (no rubber props involved), he informed me the group I was supposed to be joining had been forced to cancel. So tonight’s Hair Raiser Ghost Walk would now be me and a man who had seemingly just arrived from 1865. Spooky? Seems fine. “It’s like a date,” Smith announced, and I immediately thought of the Say Yes To the Dress episode where a bride married a ghost named Eduardo. Things seemed to end happily for her. What could go wrong for me?

ghost new zealand tour

Smith has been walking Dunedin streets in top hat, black frock coat and cane since 1999, sharing the ghostly tales of New Zealand’s “Halloween capital” to tourists and locals alike. He admits he’s always been a fan of “dark history and horrible stories”, having been raised with the tales of his Irish ancestors who emigrated during the Otago gold rush, and the superstitions and beliefs of his strict Scottish grandmother (“she had quite a dark vibe”). A skeptic in his youth, Smith never expected to end up telling spooky stories for a living.

“I never wanted to see a ghost. I’m the last person that should be doing this, because I didn’t really believe. But I also had quite an imagination when it came to the possibility.”

It wasn’t until Smith saw his first ghost while living in the UK that he changed his thinking. Every night, Smith would walk past a stone house near Kirkstall Abbey and see the light on and a man walking around inside; later he discovered there was no floor to the building, and the man he’d seen was the well-known ghost of an abbot who died 200 years earlier. Smith’s curiosity was piqued. On his return to Dunedin, he began to explore how these superstitions and ghostly notions had influenced the city established by Scottish settlers in 1848 , and started offering themed walking tours around the city centre and local cemeteries.

Smith tells me that tonight’s tour is based on a lot of Scottish superstitions, but it seems anyone hoping to say hello to the other side may be disappointed. While Smith has had people arrive brandishing spirit boxes and ghost-hunting gear, he reckons that’s not what his tours are about. “Whether you believe in ghosts or not is irrelevant to me,” he says. Rather, Smith hopes his spooky stories will connect people to Dunedin’s past, through a haunting combination of history, storytelling and atmosphere.

“My motivation for doing the tours is really this,” Smith says, raising his Victorian cane towards Dunedin’s Town Hall, its gothic stone front lit up by amber lights against a black night sky. “You know, look at it. It’s my theatre set. Nobody’s here. 25 years later, still nobody is here.”

Nobody was in the Octagon that night, but there were plenty of untimely and unfortunate deaths to discuss. First, we visited the alleyway Smith calls the “corridor of death”, which was the site of Dunedin’s first hospital in the 1850s. This is where a friendly ghost known as the original Grey Lady is said to appear, wearing her nurse’s uniform and wafting a distinct perfume. I ask him what the ghost smells like; he tells me it’s the smell of antiseptic from the public toilets down the lane.

After the incident with the flying hand, I’m not sure what to believe, but it almost doesn’t matter; Smith’s an entertaining storyteller with a huge passion for bringing Dunedin’s colonial past to life. As we stroll through the shadows, Smith launches into gripping yarns about the Leviathan Hotel’s landlady ghost, of security guards who refuse to enter certain buildings because of what they’ve seen, and a jilted bride who threw herself off the cliff behind First Church. Legend has it that seeing the selkie bride is an omen of misfortune – if only she hadn’t said yes to the dress, after all.

We wander down gloomy alleyways and brick lanes, with Smith pointing out historic features and hidden corners that I’d never noticed before. “Nobody comes out just to look up at these buildings at night,” Smith says. He loves that Dunedin residents on his tours suddenly see their city in a new light, and it’s even better when these locals begin to open up and share their own unearthly experiences. “A good ghost story is like an onion,” Smith reckons, with each new and unexpected anecdote adding another layer to these mysterious urban legends.

We walk down an alley behind the Regent Theatre, where Smith recounts the unsettling story of a tragic 1879 fire that swept through the area and killed 12 people. People who live and work here today, he says, speak of peculiar cold spaces, strange smells of smoke and unexplained sounds of crying. The Otago Daily Times reported a “ ghostly gushing ” as recently as 2018, and Smith says the suspected 1879 arsonist was a plumber. The pipes, the pipes are calling, Dunedin.

By the time we visit an old World War Two underground bunker deep below the CBD, I’m on edge. Smith knows his stories can make a sudden breath of wind or a quiet footstep feel like something much more sinister, if that’s what people want to believe. “Once you tell people something, how much does that feed into it?” he wonders aloud. He’s also found himself genuinely terrified on some evenings, particularly during his cemetery tours. “Some nights I think, ‘Jesus, what am I doing?’ I’m supposed to have nerves of steel,” he laughs.

But 25 years since Smith first donned his top hat and cane, interest in his ghost tours is stronger than ever. “When I first started, people would look at me and go, ‘what are you doing? Dunedin’s not old enough, there’s no ghost stories here’.” He says that over the years, ghosts have become more fashionable, and people have become more comfortable exploring their own horrible histories. For Smith, though, the Hair Raiser tours are a way of keeping the stories and memories of early Dunedin alive, with his own family’s history as a backdrop.

“I’m not out to talk to dead people, chase dead people, or invite them home with me,” he says, as we prepare to go our separate ways into the cool Dunedin night. “But as I say to everyone: if you see me running at any point on any of my tours, you might want to follow.”

A modern mountain-biking classic famous the world over, the Old Ghost Road Cycle Trail is an epic wilderness adventure through remote mountain ranges and backcountry.

The Old Ghost Road Cycle Trail is New Zealand’s longest singletrack and a must-do for experienced mountain bikers in search of the ultimate backcountry cycle journey. Winding up and over the mountains, it follows the footsteps of old gold miners’ on two rediscovered trails now linked by a flowing track. This Ngā Haeranga Great Ride of New Zealand (opens in new window)  has a unique history, flourishing birdlife and memorable overnight stops in simple huts.

Old Ghost Road

Ride experience

Completely off the beaten track, the Old Ghost Road Cycle Trail (opens in new window)  winds over the ranges between the Buller Gorge highway and the small, rural of Seddonville on the West Coast .

The trail is best ridden from the southern end at the old ‘ghost town’ of Lyell from where it climbs steadily through young forest to reach the first of six backcountry huts (opens in new window) . Faraway views open up as the trail emerges above the bush line and passes its highpoint (1280m) before reaching the superbly situated Ghost Lake and its namesake hut.

Highlights of the journey onward include the 11 kilometre (km) downhill into Stern Valley, and flowing trail beside the beautiful Mokihinui River and through its remote gorge. Up close, The Old Ghost Road will wow you with natural wonders such as the endangered whio (blue duck) (opens in new window) , lush podocarp forest and spectacular rock forms.

The trail can be completed in full over two days, but you will need to be extremely fit and experienced. It is recommended that to enjoy the cycle trail more cyclists should allow 3-4 days – especially as staying overnight in the trail’s huts and campsites (opens in new window)  is such unique experience. Day rides can also be enjoyed from either end.

Need to know

  • The Old Ghost Road Cycle Trail is a remote journey which takes you over rugged terrain, it is not suitable for unexperienced cyclist as it is a grade 4 (advanced) rating. There are some particularly narrow and rocky sections where cyclists are required to dismount and walk.
  • A high-quality, mountain bike in excellent working condition is essential (dual-suspension is highly recommended), as are good mechanical skills and necessary tools.
  • The trail is well signposted, but cyclists should carry a map and a mobile phone, although coverage is only available in some areas. Carrying a personal locator beacon (PLB) is strongly recommended and can be hired from outdoor gear shops.
  • The trail is open all year but can be subject to heavy rain, cold temperatures and snow on elevated sections, even in summer, so appropriate clothing is vital. And always check the weather (opens in new window)  before you begin the trail.
  • Hut capacity is limited, so book well in advance (opens in new window) . There’s no food or other support services on the trail, so riders needed to be self-sufficient and well prepared.
  • An excellent planning and safety video can be found here: The Official Old Ghost Road Video (opens in new window) .

Ghost Adventures  is returning for a new season, and ET has the first official look at the trailer! The Discovery Channel series kicks off season 29 with a special two-hour episode on May 15, reuniting paranormal investigators  Zak Bagans , Aaron Goodwin, Billy Tolley and Jay Wasley as they investigate more chilling cases of ghostly phenomena.

This season documents some of the team's most haunting encounters yet, including sinister Skinwalkers and an unprecedented first-ever investigation of the iconic Los Angeles Hospital.

Each episode follows the ghost hunters as they travel to haunted locations to document proof of the afterlife, meeting with locals, eyewitnesses and experts to piece together the haunted history of each site. Using the latest scientific gadgets and technology, they initiate an immersive lockdown investigation to capture physical evidence of the paranormal and understand each supernatural mystery.

"This season begins with one the most surreal investigations we've ever done," show creator Bagans said in a statement. "The activity the team and I witnessed in and around Torrey, Utah, was terrifying. There is an incredibly old and intense energy permeating the area that has created a vortex of paranormal activity of both the human and non-human kind."

Season 29 includes the investigation of an Arizona hotel connected to one of America's most violent gangsters and plagued by poltergeist activity; an Old West town haunted by a blood-soaked curse and a former brothel overrun with dark spirit activity; and the iconic Los Angeles Hospital, where thousands of deaths have left a disturbing energy roaming its abandoned halls.

Last year, ET sat down with Bagans to celebrate the show's 15th anniversary  and look back on a few of his spookiest scares and happiest haunts.

"Fifteen years of  Ghost Adventures , it's kind of like a celebration," Bagans said of the franchise's milestone. "I love doing it. It's just a total break from the material world, which I have gotten very bored with. And I'm just very intrigued to know what happens. There's so much mystery out there. There's so much more than our eyes and our ears and that our bodies can't detect. There's so much more to this life. People see this as a TV show, but this is my life. Fifteen years. I'm having a moment right now of, 'Wow, that's a long time. That's a long time.'"

Among the highlights Bagans reacts to are episodes such as "Island of Dolls" from season 10 ("My forever nightmare!" he passionately recalled), "Clown Motel and Goldfield High School" from season 11, "Gettysburg" from season 4 ("You have such a big place in my heart," he reacted), "The Viper Room" from season 14, "The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum" from season 3 (which was also broadcast live), "Cecil Hotel" from season 21, "Devil's Den" from a 2022 two-hour special ("A place that scarred me forever," Bagans admitted) and "The Winchester Mystery House" from season 5, among others.

While Bagans shows no signs of slowing down, he addressed the future of  Ghost Adventures --  which first debuted on Travel Channel before moving to its current home on Discovery Channel and Discovery+ -- and was open about whether he's thought about ending the show.

"When the time comes, the time comes and to be doing a show for -- we're going on 16 years now -- it's just unheard of. So if the time comes, the time comes," he said. "And I'm going to be so thankful for the opportunity that I've had to investigate with these three guys that I love. And for all the experiences that we've shared in the locations back then, we're done but we're not."

"I appreciate all of that so much. It's not easy to be on this schedule and to be doing this as much as we do and the toll that it takes on us spiritually and mentally," Bagans noted. "Sometimes we get a lot of s**t for going crazy and acting dramatic or whatever. But these are very real reactions that we have from doing this for so long. And there's no other bigger adrenaline rush. There are no other great moments than helping people, seeing tears from people and just sitting down and talking to people and learning their stories and telling them that they're not alone. That's what they're experiencing, I've experienced it too."

Bagans also credited the  Ghost Adventures  fans for engaging with their ghost hunts and continuing to tune in to new episodes.

"I love our fans," he said. "And yeah, we'll see how long we keep doing this before we turn into what we're hunting. When I turn into that, there's some people I'm gonna haunt the hell out of. And I ain't even laughing. Because I got a list and I'm checking it twice. And I'm finding out who's naughty or nice. I'm not Santa Claus, but I'm gonna have some fun."

He promised that there's still a long way to go for  Ghost Adventures  before he and the crew hang their flashlights up for good. "Continue watching us. We're not that old yet. We still got a lot of energy," Bagans quipped, joking that ghost hunting has kept him young. "We're gonna stay looking young, but I think investigating ghosts, it does help us a little bit. Would that be weird? If that's the fountain of youth? Cracked the code."

Ghost Adventures  returns with a new episode Wednesday, May 15 on Discovery Channel and Max.

Looking for a paranormal experience? Check out these haunted hotels on your next trip to northern Arizona

ghost new zealand tour

Ghost hunters have long claimed northern Arizona boasts a unique history of paranormal encounters — especially in some of the region's oldest hotels.

The spirits of former staff, famous guests, pets and more are reported to still roam the halls and interact with guests. But luckily for today's visitors, most of the spirits are reported to be friendly.

If you're looking for a unique experience on your next visit to northern Arizona, consider a stop at one of these hotels that some have claimed over the years are haunted.

Hassayampa Inn, Prescott

Most of the paranormal encounters reported at the Hassayampa Inn involve a ghost named Faith.

Legend has it Faith and her new husband checked into the hotel to celebrate their honeymoon. When her husband left to buy a pack of cigarettes and never returned, Faith waited for him for three days before eventually taking her own life. But, many say, Faith never truly left the hotel.

Guests and employees have reported hearing crying throughout the hotel and noticed the disappearance of random objects over the years. Others have reported feeling cold spots in the honeymoon suite where the smell of flowers often emanates from the empty room. Some people have even reported seeing Faith’s spirit in the form of a translucent shadow donned in a pink gown, and on rare occasions, holding a bouquet of flowers. Notably, Faith never threatens during her encounters.

While Faith may have never left, the Hassayampa Inn has been upgraded with modern amenities since first opening in 1927. Today’s guests can enjoy a variety of room options as well as the on-site Peacock Dining Room, a glass bar and a fitness center. Dogs up to 45 pounds also stay for free. The hotel also offers a variety of special packages including at the Stoneridge Golf Course and with Angry Ape Off-Road Adventures.

Hotel Monte Vista, Flagstaff

Located just off Historic Route 66 in downtown Flagstaff, Hotel Monte Vista has long been known for rumors of haunting with a cast of characters each with their own unique backstory.

The Meat Man in room 220 was a long-term boarder known for his habit of hanging raw meat from the chandelier. He reportedly died in the room and his body was found three days later. Soon after, a maintenance worker reported returning to the room to find the television on at full volume and the linens on the bed had been ripped and scattered throughout the room. Today, it is common for the television to act on its own and some guests report feeling cold hands touching them in their sleep.

On the third floor, room 305 is known as the most active room in the hotel. Numerous people have reported seeing a woman in the rocking chair near the window. Legend has it that an elderly woman and long-term renter would sit by the window for hours.

Appearances of the Women of the Night are connected to room 306, where two prostitutes were killed and thrown from the third floor to the street below in the early 1940s. In the years since numerous guests have reported being awakened in the middle of the night and unable to return to sleep because they have an overwhelming feeling of being watched. Some male guests also report the feeling of having hands placed over their mouths and throats before awakening unable to breathe.

Guests also might hear an unexpected knock at the door and a muffled voice announcing “room service” courtesy of The Phantom Bellboy. But when guests open the door, no one is there. Some people have reported seeing the figure of a bellboy standing outside of room 210, including legendary actor John Wayne during a few of his stays at the hotel. Wayne reported that the ghost seemed friendly.

Today’s guests can enjoy modern amenities in a variety of different room options while they seek out their own paranormal experience. Visitors can also enjoy the Monte Vista Cocktail Lounge, the first speakeasy in Flagstaff, where the ghosts of a dancing couple have frequently been reported on the dance floor.

Jerome Grand Hotel

The Jerome Grand Hotel is a well-known hotspot for alleged paranormal encounters with frequent visits from ghost hunters and other enthusiasts looking for proof ghosts exist. The site was the former home of the United Verde Hospital where nearly 9,000 people are reported to have died before the hospital closed in 1950. After sitting unused for more than 40 years, the hotel opened for business in 1996.

Guests have often reported seeing the ghosts of a doctor carrying a clipboard, a female nurse and a female patient in a gown wandering the halls together.

Notably, not all spirits at the hotel are human — the ghost of a cat also allegedly lives in the building. Guests have reported feeling the cat brush up against their legs, purring meowing and scratching at doors. A guest was able to capture a clear photo of the cat sitting at a table in 2008, and the photo is kept at the front desk alongside other photos of ghosts.

Perhaps the best-known spirit people have reported seeing at the Jerome Grand Hotel is the ghost of Claude Harvey, a hospital maintenance worker who died in 1935 under mysterious circumstances when his body was found pinned under the elevator. Harvey was believed to have been murdered. He appears as a shadow against the wall, but nobody has reported seeing a full apparition.

Much of the current hotel harkens back to its history including still being serviced by the original 1926 Otis elevator and the 1926 Kewanee Boiler to provide steam heat throughout the building.

In between ghost encounters, guests can enjoy their stay in a variety of modern rooms and have lunch and dinner on-site at the award-winning Asylum Restaurant during their visit.

Oatman Hotel

Alongside the famous burros roaming the area, the Oatman Hotel is one of the best-known buildings in the small town along Route 66. The hotel was originally built in 1902 and survived three major fires that nearly destroyed the town over the course of just a few years. Today, the Oatman Hotel is a well-known destination for paranormal enthusiasts and welcomes curious visitors from far and wide.

The ghost of an Irishman known as Oatie has been known to pull sheets off the beds and open the window of his old room. Legend has it that Oatie, a miner who lived at the hotel, drank too much one night and collapsed behind the hotel where he was later found dead. Visitors report that Oatie can often be heard playing the bagpipe around the building.

Some of the hotel’s more famous alleged spirits include Clark Gable and his wife Carole Lombard who stayed at the hotel during their honeymoon in 1939 and are believed to still inhabit their honeymoon suite. The couple has been caught whispering to each other and laughing together in the suite.

The second floor houses a Theater Room Museum where distinct outlines of sleeping bodies have been found in the dust on the beds — sightings that have been attributed to a former chambermaid. In the downstairs bar, spirits often lift money off the bar and raise glasses into the air.

While the hotel no longer provides overnight accommodations for guests, visitors can still enjoy a bar and restaurant on the ground floor and a museum on the upper floors.

Taylor Swift Fans Think She Will Open Up About Her Controversial Matty Healy Relationship On Her New Album. Here’s Everything There Is To Know.

Here is some required reading ahead of The Tortured Poets Department ’s release on Friday.

Stephanie Soteriou

BuzzFeed Staff

As you are probably aware, we are now less than 24 hours away from the release of Taylor Swift ’s highly anticipated new album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Taylor Swift poses in an elegant strapless dress with layered necklaces

With the star renowned for the autobiographical nature of her music , fans are expecting to gain some insight into what has been going on in Taylor’s life since the release of her last album, Midnights , in October 2022.

This includes the surprise end of her six-year relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn , which was announced in April 2023, and her controversial fling with The 1975’s Matty Healy the following month.

And with Joe already dominating headlines in the lead-up to the album’s release, what better time to refresh our memories on Taylor and Matty’s ill-fated romance? Here’s everything there is to know.

Taylor and Matty’s origin can actually be dated back to 10 years ago, with the two first sparking romance rumors after Taylor was spotted at his band's concert in 2014.

Taylor Swift and Matty Healy with British DJ Nick Grimshaw

However, Matty got incredibly defensive when quizzed about these reports in a 2016 interview with Q magazine , where he claimed that it would be “emasculating” to date Taylor.

Matty initially dismissed the star by saying that she “wasn't a big impact on my life," and then ranted: “If I had [properly] gone out with Taylor Swift, the first thing I would’ve [thought was] ‘Fucking hell I am NOT being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.’ You know, FUCK. THAT.”

“That’s also a man thing, a demasculinating, emasculating thing,” he added at the time.

In the years since that interview, Matty has continued to cultivate a seriously divisive public image and has been repeatedly accused of racism, misogyny, antisemitism, and being anti-Muslim.

And he actively leans into this image, even adding a skit to The 1975 ’s recent tour where he acted as though he was going to go on a racist rant before being cut off by his bandmates playing the beginning of the next song.

And Matty’s controversies came to a head at the start of 2023 when he was accused of doing the Nazi salute while marching on stage during one of his shows just days after International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Matty Healy giving two thumbs up on the red carpet

Later in January, Matty posted a screenshot of a “List of Jews” Wikipedia page to his Instagram story, which some deemed to be an unsettling reference to the records of Jewish people that Nazis kept during the Holocaust.

The following month, Matty faced even more backlash during an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show podcast that was deemed so offensive it was eventually removed from Spotify and Apple.

In the episode, Matty laughed hysterically as the host made a series of racist jibes, referring to American rapper Ice Spice as “one of the Inuit Spice Girls ” and a “chubby Chinese lady” before mocking a variety of accents.

Matty told Adam that he’d messaged Ice Spice, and was asked: “So you slide into her DMs and ask ‘What are you? A fucking Eskimo or something?’” The star laughed and replied: “Yeah, that's what I was like, you fucking…” before saying something unintelligible.

Matty then encouraged Adam to do an impression of Japanese people working in concentration camps, and he could be heard laughing uncontrollably at the racist stereotyping as the host mocked the Japanese accent.

In the same podcast, Matty nonchalantly admitted to masturbating to Black women being “brutalized” on an extreme pornography website that is renowned for its controversial videos that have been branded “ abuse porn .”

In April 2023, Matty apologized to Ice Spice for his comments on the podcast, insisting during one of The 1975’s New Zealand shows that his “joking got misconstrued” and that he feels “a bit bad” about potentially offending the young rapper.

Taylor’s rekindled affiliation with Matty was soft-launched in January 2023, when she was still publicly in a relationship with Joe. At the time, Taylor simply gave a surprise performance at The 1975’s London concert, singing her hit “Anti-Hero” and an acoustic cover of the band’s song “The City.”

Taylor Swift in a sparkling jeweled dress and earrings

Then, on May 3, 2023, it was reported that the two were dating, with a source telling the Sun : “She and Matty are madly in love. It’s super-early days, but it feels right. They first dated, very briefly, almost ten years ago, but timings just didn’t work out.”

“They are both massively proud and excited about this relationship and, unlike Taylor’s last one — which was very much kept out of the spotlight, deliberately — she wants to ‘own’ this romance and not hide it away,” they added at the time.

Initially, fans didn’t believe the report — especially as news of Taylor and Joe’s split had broken less than a month earlier on April 8. However, just two days after the news broke, Matty was spotted with Taylor’s friends and family in the VIP tent at her Eras Tour in Nashville.

He ended up attending all three shows that weekend, and even performed with Taylor’s opening act, Phoebe Bridgers.

Things escalated from here, with Taylor and Matty pictured holding hands , spotted kissing , and filmed looking cozy as they left a party together. Matty was also seen entering and leaving Taylor’s New York City home on multiple occasions, as well as joining her at a recording studio.

Taylor Swift in a casual top exits a building with Matty Healy

Perceptive fans then noticed that both stars mouthed the exact same words during their respective shows in an apparent secret declaration of their love.

During Matty’s May 3 concert, he mouthed: “This is about you. You know who you are. I love you,” while on stage. Taylor did the same thing during her May 5 show in Nashville.

Suffice to say, Taylor’s involvement with Matty did not go down well with her fans, who were left disappointed by her decision to associate with him, considering his problematic history. Understandably, Jewish, Black, and Asian Swifties were particularly upset.

But as exposé after exposé on the concerning things that Matty had done started to emerge, Taylor appeared to remain defiant. Although she had previously teased that she sees everything her fans say about her online, she seemingly made a point of ignoring the offense that her new relationship was causing.

In fact, the star was accused of doubling down on her decision to date Matty amid the backlash. Just days after his comments about masturbating to “brutalized” Black women resurfaced, she made the uncharacteristic decision to reference her personal life during her Eras Tour show.

In a pointed statement, Taylor suggested that she was unfazed by the online discourse, telling fans: “I’ve just never been this happy in my life — in all aspects of my life — ever before.”

And while some defended Taylor by saying that she shouldn’t be held accountable for her boyfriend’s actions, others refuted this by pointing out that she was actually being criticized for her own actions — the decision to align herself with someone who had made so many problematic statements, as well as the implication that she was unbothered by the concerning things that he’d said and done.

Taylor ended up being branded “ another complicit white woman ,” and horrified fans even said that they were canceling their preorders for her upcoming album and selling their tickets to her tour.

Matty Healy with a guitar wearing a suit and tie performing on stage

Amid all of this, Matty shot down the public outrage surrounding him as he shared his thoughts on the situation in an interview with the New Yorker .

He claimed: “It doesn’t actually matter. Nobody is sitting there at night slumped at their computer, and their boyfriend comes over and goes, ‘What’s wrong, darling?’ and they go, ‘It’s just this thing with Matty Healy.’ That doesn’t happen.”

“If it does, you’re either deluded or you are, sorry, a liar,” Matty went on. “You’re either lying that you are hurt, or you’re a bit mental for being hurt.”

“It’s just people going, ‘Oh, there’s a bad thing over there, let me get as close to it as possible so you can see how good I am,’” he then insisted. “And I kind of want them to do that because they’re demonstrating something so base level.”

Matty was called out for his reductive remarks on social media at the time, with people accusing him of having a “lack of empathy” and “hiding behind satire/edgy humor.”

As the scrutiny reached fever pitch, Taylor announced that she had collaborated with Ice Spice for a new version of her 2022 song “Karma” — a move that was branded “ insidiously calculated ” as Taylor was accused of using the rapper to distract from the growing backlash surrounding her relationship.

Taylor Swift and Ice Spice performing on stage

It was pointed out that this was the first time that Taylor had ever collaborated with a Black woman in her 17-year career, and the timing was considered to be very “ telling ,” with many theorizing that Ice Spice teaming up with Taylor was supposed to imply that Matty’s past podcast comments were a non-issue.

Things escalated when Adam Friedland, the host of the podcast in question, suggested that Taylor’s collaboration with the rapper was a direct result of Matty’s involvement in the controversial episode. He retweeted an account reporting on the collaboration and simply wrote: “You’re welcome.”

Then, on May 29, photos of Matty wearing merchandise for Red Scare , a cultural commentary podcast hosted by Dasha Nekrasova and Anna Khachiyan, emerged online. Matty is good friends with Dasha, and he has regularly been spotted with her over the years; however, his continued support for her podcast amid his relationship with Taylor raised eyebrows.

This is because Dasha and Anna have been less than complimentary of the US singer in the past, and in their podcast episode “ Make Americana Great Again ,” the two hosts made cruel comments about Taylor’s body, sexual assault case, and even her mom — who they referred to as “Miss Piggy” — in a 30-minute tirade.

Just days later, on June 5, it was reported that Taylor and Matty had broken up. At the time, it was said that they had “decided to just go back to being friends” and that “nothing complicated happened.”

Taylor Swift performer in a tiered dress singing on stage

But fans questioned this narrative when a video of Taylor choking up while performing her heartbreak song “I Don’t Want to Live Forever” emerged online from one of her first shows post-split.

In the clip, Taylor looked emotional, and her voice audibly cracked as she sang the line: “Wondering if I dodged a bullet or just lost the love of my life,” prompting speculation that this is how she felt about Matty.

Around the same time,  TMZ reported that Matty’s various controversies were not a factor in the relationship ending. They stated that Taylor was well aware of Matty’s reputation before they started dating and that she “simply blocked out” the “noise” from her concerned fans.

Taylor started her relationship with NFL tight end Travis Kelce a few weeks after her and Matty’s split, and the two are currently still together and looked seriously loved up during a recent appearance at Coachella .

Taylor has never publicly commented on her romance with Matty, but fans believe he will be referenced to in her upcoming songs, with speculation mounting when the track list was revealed in February.

And with The Tortured Poets Department finally being released on Friday, we thankfully don’t have much longer to wait before finding out.
