Asian Tour unveils early 2023 schedule ahead of strongest-ever season

golf asia tour 2023

The Asian Tour has unveiled its 2023 schedule through May, for what promises to be the finest start to a season the Tour has ever enjoyed.

The campaign will commence in Saudi Arabia, at the most lucrative event of the year, before being followed by an exciting blend of established and new tournaments, including four International Series events.

The impressive schedule boasts a total of 11 tournaments contested over 14 weeks, starting with the $5 million PIF Saudi International — won dramatically by American Harold Varner III this year when he holed a 92-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole – at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club, near Jeddah, from February 2-5.

The Tour will then journey to two inaugural International Series tournaments in Oman and then Qatar – marking the first time the International Series will have visited the Middle East. Al Mouj Golf will host the former event, while Doha Golf Club will stage the latter.

These will be the first of an expanded 10 International Series events in 2023, with International Series stops to follow in Hua Hin, Thailand, in March, and Cam Ranh, Vietnam the following month. The International Series Thailand launched the International Series earlier this year and saw American Sihwan Kim triumph at Black Mountain Golf Club, while the Tour visits the spectacular KN Golf Links for the first edition of the Vietnam event. This will be the first time the Asian Tour will return to Vietnam in seven years.

The New Zealand Open makes a popular return to the calendar following a two-year COVID-19 enforced break in the first week of March at Millbrook Resort in Queenstown – the tournament’s home since 2014.

The DGC Open, inaugurated in the 2022 season, will also be staged in March at the historic Delhi Golf Club, as well as the Tour’s long-awaited return to Hong Kong with a new event at one of the region’s most iconic golfing venues, the Hong Kong Golf Club.

“We are very proud to announce the start of the 2023 season, hot off the heels of a tremendous 2022. It is fantastic to see us carry the momentum of the season we have just completed and start the new season at full pace.” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner & CEO, Asian Tour.

“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks. It reaches a wide range of exciting destination, offers extremely lucrative purses, world-class venues and a great balance of established and new events.

“The PIF Saudi International, a truly global golfing event, is the perfect way to start the season and sets the tone for what will be, unquestionably, the strongest season in the history of the Asian Tour.”

Indonesian Masters 2023 golf: Gaganjeet Bhullar wins 11th Asian Tour title

The Indian pro golfer carded 24-under to beat compatriot Karandeep Kochhar by five strokes and win his first title of the year.

Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar

India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar won his 11th Asian Tour title at the Indonesian Masters 2023 golf tournament, which concluded at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club on Sunday.

Bhullar carded 24-under 260 (63-67-63-67) after four rounds to finish five strokes ahead of compatriot Karandeep Kochhar, who had a bogey-free final day to finish 19-under (69-68-65-63) in the Indonesian capital.

It was Gaganjeet Bhullar’s first title of the year. His previous title came at the Indonesia Open last year. New Zealand’s Ben Campbell, who won the Hong Kong Open last week, was third with 18-under.

Gaganjeet Bhullar, an Asian Games silver medallist, teed off the golf meet with eight birdies on the opening day and led the leaderboard by two strokes. The Indian golfer led Canada’s Richard Lee by three strokes on the second day and increased his lead on top by seven strokes on the third day courtesy of nine birdies.

Though Bhullar hit two bogies on the fourth day, the 35-year-old had enough of the lead to see off the challenge from Karandeep Kochhar and sealed his victory with an eagle on the final hole.

The win also lifted Bhullar to eighth place on the final International Series order of merit and fourth on the Asian Tour. He was 46th before the start of the Indonesian Masters 2023 on the International Series order of merit.

Among the other Indian golfers, Veer Ahlawat was tied for third after three days but dropped to T-7 at the end of the final day with 14-under.

India’s Chikkarangappa S finished 12th, Rashid Khan T-36, Anirban Lahiri 67th, and Honey Baisoya T-68 among the players who made the cut for the final two rounds.

Prominent Golf Tournaments Taking Place In Asia This 2023

Asia will be hosting some of the finest golf tournaments through 2023. Both the Asian Tour and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournaments are holding some exciting rounds on the beautiful greens of some of the finest golf courses in the region.

The Asian Tour and the LPGA are on, and golf tournaments as part of the Asian Tour were held in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and New Zealand in the early months of 2023. International Series Thailand concluded in March. However, the tour enters India in March, followed by Hong Kong, Vietnam and South Korea, before ending in the United Kingdom.

Similarly, the LPGA Tour, one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events for women, is holding 12 of its 34 golf tournaments outside the US. Two of these have already been held in Thailand and Singapore. The other four Asian countries on the LPGA Tour in 2023 are China, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

Besides the top tournaments held under Asian Tour and LPGA Tour, several other golf events are set to take place in Asian countries. Some of these, such as Metta Charity Golf and FaithActs Charity Golf Tournament happening here in Singapore, are charity tournaments.

Others, such as LIV Golf’s Singapore tournament and the prestigious Hong Kong Open, which will be held after nearly three years, are professional sporting events. There are also the Women’s Aramco Team Series rounds in Hong Kong and Riyadh, where both professional and amateur golfers participate.

The DGC Open

Date: 16-19 March

Location: New Delhi, India

The DGC Open will be held at the Lodhi course at the Delhi Golf Club. The 72-hole tournament will witness some of the very best golfers from the world, including the top names in the Asian Tour Order of Merit such as Sadom Kaewkanjana, Gunn Charoenkul, Berry Henson, Suradit Yongcharoenchai and Phachara Khongwatmai.

Icons such as Thaworn Wiratchant, Jyoti Randhawa, Scott Hend and Chapchai Nirat will also be present alongside promising young players such as Yuvraj Sandhu, Viraj Madappa and S Chikkarangappa. A full field of 132 players from 25 countries is expected to participate in the tournament.

The tournament was first held in 2022, which means that the upcoming edition is only its second. Yet, the DGC Open immediately became one of the biggest golf tournaments on the Asian Tour. In fact, the prize fund of USD 750,000 for the 2023 tournament is 50 percent more than last year.

Golf fans in Thailand will be particularly interested in this tournament because the winner of its inaugural edition, Nitithorn Thippong, will be defending his title in the tournament. Since then, Thippong has gone on to win International Series Singapore and Bangkok Open, on the local Thai Golf Tour, to end 2022 at the fourth rank on the Asian Tour Order of Merit. His biggest challenger could be India’s Ajeetesh Sandhu, who was the runner-up at The DGC Open in 2022.

World City Championship

Date: 23-26 March

Location: Hong Kong

Like the DGC Open, the inaugural World City Championship is part of the Asian Tour. The 2023 edition will be held at the Hong Kong Golf Club (HKGC) in the New Territories region and is the first golf event in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) in 38 months. The last one was the Hong Kong Open, which was held in January 2020 — two months before the pandemic brought the world to a standstill.

The reopening of Hong Kong has made the tournament one of the most eagerly anticipated ones for golf fans. The World City Championship carries a prize money of USD 1 million. It will be played at the Tournament Composite Course at HKGC’s Fanling venue.

Ian Poulter, a former Hong Kong Open winner, and Henrik Stenson, the 2016 Open champion, are among the major names who will headline the World City Championship. Hong Kong’s own Taichi Kho, Matthew Cheung and Leon D’Souza are also reportedly expected to participate.

LIV Golf Singapore 2023

Former Singapore Open champions Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia will be among the 48 of the world’s finest golfers who will tee off at the outstanding course during the tournament. Among other top stars who would be present are major champions Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson, Patrick Reed and Phil Mickelson.

The tournament would be one of the most exciting ones, especially because of Sentosa Golf Club’s reputation as one of the best in Asia. In 2022, it was named Asia’s Best Golf Course at the World Golf Awards and named the World’s Best Eco-Friendly Golf Facility for the third consecutive year.

Maekyung Open

Date: 4-7 May

Location: Seongnam, South Korea

The penultimate golf tournament in the Asian Tour in 2023, Maekyung Open will hold its 42nd edition at the Namseoul Country Club in Gyeonggi Province. The golf course was designed by Japanese golf course design icon Seiichi Inoue in 1971 and covers mountainous terrain, making it a challenging turf for players.

Kim Bi-o of South Korea was the winner of the 2022 edition. In fact, South Korean golfers have been winning the tournament since 2005 when Choi Sang-ho took home the title at the age of 50.

It is estimated that the field size at the Maekyung Open will be 144. Though the 2023 prize money is not clear yet, the fund was around one million dollars in the previous edition.

The course was built in 1993 and designed by Perry Dye, the son of architect Pete Dye.

The 2022 edition of the tournament was won by South Korea’s Kim Min-kyu. Usually, the tournament is played with a field size of 144 golfers.

Buick LPGA Shanghai

Date: 12-15 October

Location: Shanghai, China

The Buick LPGA Shanghai is part of the Ladies Professional Golf Tour (LPGA) tournaments that are played through 2023. Debuting in 2018, its second edition took place in 2019. The tournament has not been held since 2020 because of the pandemic. American golfer Daniella Kang won both editions, which makes her the undisputed defending champion.

The tournament has a total prize fund of USD 2.1 million. It will be played at the Qizhong Garden Golf Club, which has a par of 72.

BMW Ladies Championship

Date: 19-22 October

Location: South Korea

First held in 2015, BMW Ladies Championship replaced LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship as an LPGA Tour event in 2019. Its third edition as part of the series was held in 2022 after a gap of two years because of the pandemic.

The BMW Ladies Championship has been held in Wonju in Gangwon Province of the country. The 2022 edition was played at Oak Valley Country Club. The prize purse at the time was USD 2.2 million. The venue of the 2023 edition is yet to be announced.

Lydia Ko of New Zealand is the defending champion, having become the first non-Asian to win the tournament at the 2022 edition. Ko, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, is currently the World No.1 in Women’s World Golf Rankings. Though a New Zealander, she was born in Seoul.

Interestingly, current World No.3 Ko Jin-young of South Korea was the winner of the tournament in 2021. In March 2023, Ko Jin-young successfully defended her HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore.

Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA

Date: 26-29 October

Location: New Taipei City, Taiwan

Although the tournament has been played as an LPGA Tour round since 2011, it has not been held since 2019 because of the pandemic. This makes the Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA one of the most-anticipated golf tournaments in Asia.

Like previous editions, the venue of the 2023 tournament is Miramar Golf Country Club — a 36-hole golf facility designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1994. The prize fund is set to be USD 2.2 million.

Current World No.2 and 2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda is the reigning champion. Korda was only 20 years old when she first won the Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA. She again won the tournament the following year and is, therefore, the defending champion. Lydia Ko is also a former Taiwan Swinging Skirts LPGA champion, having won it in 2015 at age 18.

Toto Japan Classic

Date: 2-5 November

Location: Omitama, Japan

The golf tournament is the last of the Asian rounds on the LPGA calendar before it returns to the US. It is co-sanctioned by both LPGA and Japan Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association (JLPGA).

The tournament was first held in 1973. The LPGA did not include the tournament in its calendar in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. On both occasions, the Toto Japan Classic was held as a JLPGA-sanctioned tour only. It returned as part of the LPGA in 2022 when the tournament was won by Gemma Dryburgh of Scotland.

The 2023 edition is to be held at the Minori course of Taiheiyo Club in Omitama of Ibaraki Prefecture. The course has a par of 72, and the total prize fund of the tournament will be USD 2 million.

FOUR INTERNATIONAL SERIES EVENTS PART OF ASIAN TOUR'S EARLY 2023 SCHEDULE

LIV Golf Logo

Four International Series tournaments, including debut events in the Middle East and trips to Thailand and Vietnam, are included in the early portion of the  2023 Asian Tour schedule released Friday .

The 2023 season will mark the second year of the LIV Golf-supported International Series, the ground-breaking set of elevated events on the Asian Tour that recognizes and develops next-generation stars while providing playing opportunities for LIV Golf members. LIV Golf has made a sizable commitment to the International Series, with prize purses of $2 million or more for each tournament to help invigorate the game in Asia and the Middle East.

The International Series also offers a pathway to playing privileges at LIV Golf events. Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent won the International Series Order of Merit in 2022 and  received an exemption to play in the upcoming 2023 LIV Golf League . Vincent and several others also played a full LIV schedule in 2022 thanks to their success in last year’s International Series events.

The 2023 Asian Tour season will open with its flagship event, the $5 million PIF Saudi International powered by Softbank Investment Advisers on Feb. 2-5. Royal Greens Golf and Country Club, site of the last regular-season event during the inaugural 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Series, is the tournament venue for the fifth consecutive year. The defending champion is current LIV Golf member Harold Varner III, who won in dramatic fashion with a 92-foot eagle putt on the final hole to beat Bubba Watson; the two eventually became teammates on Niblicks GC, with Watson the non-playing captain while recovering from knee surgery.

The first International Series tournament takes place the following week, Feb. 9-12 in Oman. The $2 million event will be held in Muscat at Al Mouj Golf, Oman’s first links-style course set along more than a mile of coastline along the Indian Ocean. The layout, designed by LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman, is considered the second-best course in the region, according to the Top 100 Golf Courses rankings. It will be the first International Series event ever held in the Middle East.

The International Series will remain in the Middle East for the event in Qatar, Feb. 16-19. The host course for the $2.5 million tournament is Doha Golf Club, among the oldest golf destinations in the region. Current LIV members Branden Grace, Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson have won professional events at Doha, which first hosted the Qatar Masters in 1998.

International Series Thailand will return to Black Mountain Golf Club on March 9-12. Located in the foothills outside the royal town of Hua Hin, Black Mountain has been voted as Thailand’s top course seven times and hosted its first professional event in 2009. Last year, it was the venue for the first of seven International Series events, with Sihwan Kim winning the title that helped lead to several LIV Golf starts.

A month later, International Series Vietnam will be played at KN Golf Links in Cam Ranh on April 13-16. The Norman-designed signature course, a links-style layout with views of the South China Sea, ranks among the best in Asia. It will be the first time in seven years that the Asian Tour has played in Vietnam.

A total of 10 International Series events will be part of the full 2023 Asian Tour schedule, with the remaining six in the series to be included in future announcements.

“The Asian Tour is absolutely thrilled with how the schedule looks,” Asian Tour Commissioner and CEO Cho Minn Thant said in Friday's news release. “It reaches a wide range of exciting destinations, offers extremely lucrative purses, world-class venues and a great balance of established and new events.”

International stars ready to shine at 2024 Saudi Open

T he 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF begins tomorrow morning, Wednesday 17 April, as an Asian Tour field strengthened by LIV Golf and DP World Tour stars tee off, all with the desire to lift the trophy on Saturday evening at Riyadh Golf Club.

Thai star Denwit Boriboonsub won the 2023 Saudi Open in December in stunning fashion, but Henrik Stenson, Peter Uihlien and Haotong Li are the standout names hoping to dethrone him, as 144 players from 33 different countries fight for glory

There are 20 Arab golfers from eight nations in the field, including seven from Saudi Arabia, who have all been handed the opportunity to compete alongside some of the world’s best players as golf continues to develop in the region.

Peter Uihlein, who plays for LIV Golf team RangeGoats GC, is making his first visit to Riyadh and expressed his excitement at playing in the Saudi capital. The American believes it will be an action-packed four rounds, filled with low scores and plenty of birdies.

Uihlein said: “I watched the 2023 Saudi Open on TV in December and the Aramco Series Ladies International recently and I saw a lot of low scores, so I am hoping for a tournament full of birdies. It does depend how much the wind blows, but hopefully it dies down later in the week.

“It’s my first time in Riyadh, having been to Jeddah a few times, and I’m excited about it. I spoke to Othman [Almulla] about how many courses are planned and the ones they are already building around the Kingdom. It is really cool to be here.

“I feel like the stuff I am working on is getting better and better, and I feel a little bit sharper as the weeks go on. It is why I’m here - to carry on working on my game ahead of LIV Adelaide and LIV Singapore.”

Chinese sensation Haotong Li is a four-time DP World Tour winner and has chosen to play in the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF to experience the continued growth of the game in the Kingdom.

Li said: “I want to see different golf courses to the ones I have played previously and to visit new parts of the world. It’s extremely exciting to play this week and do something special. I am truly honoured to be here and be a part of growing the game as big as possible. Hopefully everybody starts to fall in love with golf.

“I haven’t practiced much in the past couple of weeks, but I feel fresh, and ready for a good week. I have played a couple of practice rounds and the course shapes up beautifully, it’s in perfect condition. I’m looking forward to having a good week.”

Golf Saudi CEO Noah Alireza spoke to gathered media ahead of the tournament and he stressed the importance of the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF’s commitment to handing opportunities to national and regional players.

Alireza said: “We are delighted to welcome a strong field to the 2024 Saudi Open presented by PIF following its first holding on the Asian Tour last year and I am certain that this week will prove a success with exciting golf on show at Riyadh Golf Club.

“The opportunity that the Saudi Open presents to all of the competitors, but particularly to the seven Saudi nationals and the 13 other Arab golfers in the field, is one of the main driving forces behind our desire to host this tournament in Riyadh. Playing alongside the best Asian Tour players, plus a number of LIV Golf and DP World Tour members, helps them understand what it takes to reach this level and is a vital part of their golf education. It is a key part of Golf Saudi’s commitment to golf in our country.”

The stars of the golfing world are hoping to get their hands on the trophy
