19 Fun Things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota

Home » Blog » U.S.A. » 19 Fun Things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota

We were pleasantly surprised on our first visit to this Midwest town. In this article we’re going over all the fun things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota, plus our favorite restaurants and where to find the best entertainment and shopping.

Things to Do in Grand Forks

As Minnesota natives, we have driven through North Dakota several times. But it was always on our way to get somewhere else… and usually in a hurry!

So it wasn’t until our most recent visit that we actually truly took the time to explore Grand Forks, North Dakota.

And I’ve got to say, we had a wonderful time exploring this Midwest town.

With a lively university campus, parks and green space to enjoy, and an array of fun spots to dig into the local food (and beer!) scene, we spent a couple of days exploring the best Grand Forks has to offer.

Whether you’re a Midwesterner looking for a getaway close to home or you’re passing through North Dakota and want a fun place to stop off and explore, we’re going to share some of the best things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Disclaimer: Our trip was sponsored by Visit Grand Forks and the North Dakota tourism board , but as with every piece of content on our website, all opinions are completely our own.

Best Day in Grand Forks Itinerary

Below is what we think would make a great itinerary, packed with some of the best things to do in Grand Forks. You’ll find more information about each of these activities (and more!) below…

  • Coffee & breakfast sandwich at Urban Stampede
  • Rent bikes and explore the Greenway Trail
  • Day trip to Turtle River State Park to try fishing, walk the trails and enjoy a picnic
  • Wander UND campus & stop in the North Dakota Museum of Art
  • Cocktails and fried pickle appetizer at The Toasted Frog
  • Dinner and local beer at either Rhombus Guys or Half Brothers
  • Walk along the Greenway Trail as the sun sets
Insider Tip: Check to see if there will be events taking place during your visit (like the summer concert series, the farmers market, trivia night, or a hockey game), and add them to your itinerary.

1. Jumpstart your day with a coffee in a funky atmosphere

Urban Stampede Grand Forks ND

We’re borderline coffee snobs… but, like, in a down-to-earth way (or so we’d like to think!). Let’s just say we love a solid coffee shop, and finding the best in each town we visit is kind of a hobby of ours.

Well, we only made it into one coffee shop in Grand Forks, but we’d like to think we found the best (after a bit of pre-trip research!).

With eclectic decor and hip tunes on speaker, Urban Stampede is oozing with c ool kid vibes . The space appears to have been a bar in a past life, but with lots of natural light and colorful art, the space is inviting and begs you to stay a while.

What to order:

In addition to a funky and welcoming atmosphere, their drink menu is robust and interesting.

Of course you’ll find the typical suspects – cortado, americano, cappuccino. But the menu expands to include a variety of herbal tea concoctions, fresh smoothies, and intriguing coffee specialties, like a Thai-inspired coffee made with cardamom and condensed milk.

We went pretty standard – a cortado and a green smoothie – but both were great. It was the best coffee we had in all of North Dakota, and the smoothie was light and refreshing (especially on a hot day!).

If you need a little sustenance to go with your liquid order, choose from a breakfast bagel and artisan waffles.

While you can certainly grab your coffee to go, we’d highly recommend ordering your coffee “for here”, sliding into a booth and taking a minute to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.

2. Fish for trout at Turtle River State Park

Fishing in the Turtle River Grand Forks ND

Whether you’re an avid angler, a complete newbie, or somewhere in between (like us!), Turtle River State Park is a fun place to cast a line and try your luck.

This tranquil river snakes its way through a forested ravine and makes a nice place to spend the morning or afternoon in nature.

While we didn’t personally have luck catching anything, a big something tugged on my line real hard, then proceeded to bite off my sinker and hook. Yikes! So there are some big boys in the river for sure. Fingers crossed you have more luck reeling them in than we did!

Good to know: This park is located roughly 30 minutes outside of Grand Forks, but it makes a nice little day trip for fishing, hiking and a picnic lunch. You can even spend the night camping here (like we did!).

Where to rent fishing equipment:

If you don’t have fishing equipment of your own, you can rent a fishing pole and lures for free! Simply head to the main office and pick yours up!

Insider Tip: They won’t come with worms, so you may want to bring your own. Corn is also a good bait, so you can bring a can to use.

3. Hike one of the best wooded trails in the state

Turtle River Walking Path Grand Forks ND

If you love hiking as much as we do, Turtle River State Park should be on your Grand Forks itinerary.

A network of trails is nestled in a forested river valley. With minimal elevation gain, these talking paths are suitable for people of most abilities and are a great way to get into nature while in Grand Forks.

Do it yourself: Read trail descriptions here to choose one that is what you’re looking for. Raven Ravine is a particularly good one!

4. Indulge in Midwest classics at Darcy’s Cafe

Darcy Cafe Grand Forks North Dakota

There’s nothing that screams Americana quite like grabbing breakfast at a diner. And Darcy’s serves up some of the best in town in an unpretentious atmosphere.

The walls are covered with university paraphernalia, vintage posters and coloring book pages signed by little patrons (many of which say “to Darcy” on their corners).

Like we said, classic diner.

The service is a little hurried (this place gets busy!), and the coffee is, well, what you’d expect from a bottomless mug at a diner. (For actually great coffee, see #1 on this list.)

And this pocket-sized cafe isn’t much to look at, but once you see your plate piled high with perfectly crispy hashbrowns, an expertly-folded omelet or fluffy, just-off-the-griddle pancakes, you’ll understand what the hype is about.

Come hungry, because the portions are large and the food is hearty!

What to order:

We liked the Kasper Special, which is hash browns topped with corn beef hash, sausage, ham, bacon, peppers, onions, cheese, and eggs cooked to order.

You can upgrade your side of pancakes to be their famed “Cinnamon Roll Pancakes” for just a small upcharge.

Insider tip: If you like things spicy, be sure to try their (many!) hot sauces. We particularly liked the chipotle and the garlic (mixed).

5. Wander the UND campus

UND Picnic on Campus Grand Forks, ND

I have a thing for wandering around college campuses. Anyone else?!

There’s just something about walking through a quad and knowing this is a place where so many memories are made and dreams are realized. Oh, and university campuses usually have some pretty cool architecture, too!

Whether or not you’re visiting Grand Forks while school is in season, you can stroll the campus or find a place to spread out on the grass and do a bit of people watching.

6. Peruse the Museum of Art… for FREE!

UND Museum of Art Grand Forks ND

If you’re looking for free things to do in Grand Forks, be sure to make your way to the North Dakota Museum of Art.

Located on the university campus, this museum is free to all!

I double majored in journalism and art, so I’ve been to quite a few art museums in my day. And I will say this one is quite small. When we were there, we only saw two artists’ work displayed, but it is still a neat stop to make while exploring the university campus.

Plus, there are some cool artworks on display just outside the museum, which is known as their (small) sculpture garden.

7. Try the best pizza in the state on the Rhombus Guys Rooftop

Rhombus Brothers Pizza Grand Forks, ND

Voted the best pizza in North Dakota by Business Insider, this town staple has a cult following.

We had heard great things about Rhombus Guys from family and friends even before getting to Grand Forks, so we had high expectations. And we’ve got to say, it is pretty great pizza.

If you’re visiting on a nice day, grab a seat on their intimate rooftop for dinner with a bit of a view. The only bummer about the rooftop is that they don’t have their beer on tap here (just in cans).

One of their most raved about pizzas is the “T-Rex”, but it’s essentially just an all-meat pizza. Not really our thing, but if it’s yours, go for it! Or choose the Midwesterner, which is the T-Rex, plus green peppers and onions and a side of ranch.

With so many more unique options (like pizza with tater tots or pickles), we had a tough time choosing. We landed on the Amalfi Coast (a Greek-style pizza that was okay), and the Happy Pig (pulled pork, honey BBQ, pineapple, pepperoncini, red peppers), which was great!

Just an honest note here: The pizza was very good, but we had some pretty sub-par service here. We would certainly try it again and know all restaurants have their good and bad days, but we do feel the need to share our honest experience.

8. Cheers with local craft beer

We’re huge craft beer fans, so scoping out the local brewery scene is always at the top of our to do list when visiting a new city.

Below are the two most popular breweries in town:

Rhombus Guys Brewing Company

Rhombus Brothers Brewery Grand Forks ND

Located in what was once the Metropolitan Opera House, you can grab a beer and get a little taste of history all at the same time.

We’ve gotta say, the beer from Rhombus Guys Brewing Company is pretty darn good. We’re IPA fans, and we both loved the Greenway IPA. But they have a variety of styles to choose from.

Interesting note: Rhombus Guys began with pizza (see #7), then opened a brewery. I mean, pizza and beer go together like peanut butter and jelly, so it makes sense, right? Being that they share a name, we thought they’d be connected, but they seem more like separate businesses. The brewery has its own food menu, and the pizza location serves Rhombus Guys beer as well as brews from elsewhere.

Rhombus Guys Brewing: Location | Website

Half Brothers Brewing

Half Brothers Brewery Grand Forks ND

With a large beer menu as well as pizza and pub eats, Half Brothers is the perfect place to grab dinner and a drink (or two!) while in Grand Forks.

From classic, like golden ales and IPAs to more unique offerings, like a sour called “Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows”, Half Brothers has a beer for just about everybody!

Half Brothers Brewing Co.: Location | Website

9. Shop local at the Town Square Farmers Market

On Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Town Square turns into a lively farmers market, full of local vendors and artisans.

Shop for fresh produce and handmade goods while enjoying a fun community atmosphere.

We love farmers markets, so this would have definitely been on our Grand Forks itinerary had we been visiting on a weekend.

10. Kayak the river

Turtle River Grand Forks ND

While the river was too high to get on the water while we were visiting in early August (womp, womp), kayaking the Red River makes a fun and adventurous thing to do in Grand Forks.

Do it yourself: Rentals are available at Boathouse on the Red and are $15 per paddler for 90 minutes.

11. Bike (or walk) the Greenway

grand forks nd places to visit

Calling all active travelers!

The Greenway hugs the Red River, which runs right through town and marks the state line between North Dakota and Minnesota.

After this river flooded in 1997, the Greenway Trail was established as a recreation space that could be enjoyed year round.

Comprised of roughly 2,2000 acres, this is a perfect spot to start your day with a little light exercise, or ya know, work off that pizza and beer from Rhombus Guys as the sun sets.

biking the Greenway Grand Forks, ND

You can choose to explore the Greenway on foot or on two wheels, as there are a few bike share stations that have rentals available. The best part is bike rentals are free for the first 6 hours of use!

Insider Tip: Be sure to stop at the Flood Memorial Marker, which is right next to the river. It is pretty startling to see just how high the river has risen in the past.

12. Find a small slice of zen at Sertoma Park Japanese Gardens

Sertoma Park Japanese Garden Grand Forks, ND

If you’ve perused around our blog before, you may already know that we are obsessed with Japan . (It’s one of our favorite countries!)

So whenever we have the opportunity to imagine — even if just for a minute — that we are in the Land of the Rising Sun, we take it!

Not gonna lie, Sertoma Park Japanese Gardens is small. Like really small. It is essentially a pond with two traditional stone lanterns gifted by Grand Forks’ sister town in Japan.

While not big in size (and not worth going out of your way much to get here), there is a playground in the adjoining park, making this a nice place to get a little morning zen (or to wear your little ones out before nap time!). Bring a thermos of tea and sit on a bench to soak up the view.

13. Trivia Tuesdays at Up North Pizza

We’re huge fans of finding trivia nights on our travels. Don’t get me wrong — we’re not good at trivia. But we think it is a fun way to get a taste of the local scene.

Plus, we just learn a ton every trivia night we go to, and that’s always fun!

Up North Pizza is known for serving up some fantastic pies, and on Tuesdays, you can join a local crowd for tasty eats, good beer, and some brain-powered fun!

14. Try North Dakota’s take on fried pickles

Toasted Frog Deep Fried Pickles Grand Forks ND

While fried pickles originated in the American South (Atkins, Arkansas, to be exact!), North Dakota has its own spin on this addictive bar food that we are kind of loving…

Instead of pickle slices getting battered then fried, the North Dakota version starts with a pickle spear that is wrapped in havarti cheese (because cheese is a staple Midwest ingredient that makes everything better, dontcha know!).

The cheese-wrapped pickle is then covered in a wonton wrapper before being fried. Served with a sriracha-based dipping sauce, we are big fans.

Sound like a snack you’ve gotta get your hands on? Here’s what you’re gonna do…

While the ND-style fried pickle can be found on menus throughout the state, the original version is supposedly from The Toasted Frog . And it is good.

Come for dinner or make it a happy hour stop and pair your pickles with one of their signature martinis.

While we didn’t have the most wonderful service at the restaurants we visited in Grand Forks, The Toasted Frog was the one exception.

The bartender was super friendly and we would have loved to stay and enjoy our pickles in the handsomely appointed bar. However, since we were traveling with a baby – aka not allowed in bars – we had to take our order to go (after snapping a few photos to share with you, of course!).

Even though we couldn’t hang with a martini, we’re so glad we tried these pickles because they may have been our favorite thing we ate in Grand Forks. And the sriracha dipping sauce they were served with actually had a kick (we love spicy!) which was hard to find on other menus in this Midwest town. Definitely give these pickles a taste when you’re in Grand Forks!

15. Go to a hockey game at “one of the finest arenas in the world”

Visiting Grand Forks in the winter? You’re in for a treat, as this town is a hockey-lover’s haven.

Book tickets and experience not only an exciting game, but a world-class venue and the magic of the entire city getting behind the sport.

A little background on the Ralph Engelstad Arena

We knew nothing about this facility before our visit, so we did a little digging and what we found is pretty interesting…

The Ralph Engelstad Arena is located on the university campus is the proud home of men’s hockey and has been named as one of the top college hockey arenas in the world. In fact, it has reportedly been referred to as “the Taj Mahal of hockey”, in reference to the level of high-end materials used in the construction of this facility, such as granite floors, and spectator seats made of cherry wood and leather.

Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky has even called this arena “one of the most beautiful buildings we have in North America”.

However, this arena is not without its controversy. UND was known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the NCAA barred the use of Native American symbols in 2012. This ban stirred up some controversy, especially in the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

If you want to get the full deets on the drama, read more here , or you can tour the facility when you’re in Grand Forks and ask for the scoop firsthand. Tours take place Monday – Friday at 1:30 p.m. and costs $7 per adult.

16. Catch outdoor music at “Concerts in the Garden”

Summer Concerts in the Garden Grand Forks ND

Outdoor concerts are one of our very favorite things to do. Ever .

Pair that with a local beer, and boom – we are two very happy people. (It doesn’t take much!)

If you happen to be in Grand Forks during one of their annual summer concert series shows, don’t miss out!

Hosted by the North Dakota Museum of Art (located on the university campus), shows are Tuesday evenings during July and August ( see their website for dates). Artists from around the country perform on a stage in the museum’s sculpture garden, while concert goers enjoy the tunes, local beer and burgers or brats hot off the grill.

The shows are casual and family-friendly, and tickets cost $15. Bring a blanket and lawn chairs and enjoy a fun evening of outdoor music.

17. Shop at the flagship Scheels

Did you know that Grand Forks was the birthplace of the “All Sports Superstore” Scheels? We certainly didn’t. It first opened in 1989, but in the years since, this chain has grown immensely. Now in 14 different US states, you can visit the flagship location while in Grand Forks.

With more than 150,000 square feet, visiting this megastore is part shopping, part entertainment.

18. Taste Grand Forks’ famous “Chippers”

Widmans Chocolate Potato Chips Grand Forks ND

Widman’s Candy Shop is a Grand Forks icon. The Widman family has been in the candy-making business for 4 generations – since 1885. And the thing they’re known for is chocolate.

Their most popular confection is chocolate-covered potato chips, known lovingly as “chippers”.

While they are the thing to get at Wildman’s I have to admit that they’re just not my personal favorite, as I’m not a big milk chocolate person. (The darker the better for me!)

But if sweet milk chocolate is your jam, you’ll love these thickly coated chips that have a bit of a salty crunch!

19. Explore downtown Grand Forks

Downtown Grand Forks, ND

With ax throwing, an escape room, cafes, and a handful of cute boutiques, there’s a little something for everyone in downtown Grand Forks. It’s easy to find (free!) parking downtown and everything is very walkable, so go for a stroll and see what catches your eye!

Places in downtown Grand Forks

Entertainment:

  • Downtown Axe
  • Grand Forks Escape Room
  • The Silo Boutique
  • Dakota Styles

Where to eat & drink in Grand Forks, North Dakota

Where to eat and drink in Grand Forks ND

While the variety of cuisine is rather limited, Grand Forks has a pretty decent selection of American eats.

Think pub fare, pizza, burgers, and Midwest comfort foods.

We did a lot of “research” for this section by eating as much as possible during our stay. I’ve got to say, we ate pretty darn well in Grand Forks and have curated a list of some of the best restaurants in town — from local staples to hip brewpubs.

We’ve even included some tips on what to order so you have the best foodie experience in Grand Forks!

Urban Stampede

Fun atmosphere and excellent coffee… What more could you ask for? We would definitely come here again!

Urban Stampede: Location | Website

Darcy’s Diner

This true diner is a local favorite for their big, hearty portions and no-frills atmosphere.

What to order: The Karl Special (eggs atop corned beef hash with veggies and meat) was really good. And if you have a sweet tooth, upgrade your side to cinnamon roll pancakes.

Darcy’s Cafe: Location | Website

Rhombus Guys Pizza

With a lot of pizza options, you’ll have no problem finding one (or several!) that are up your alley!

What to order: We loved the Happy Pig, which is a combo of pulled pork, honey BBQ, peppers and pineapple.

Rhombus Guys Pizza: Location | Website

The Toasted Frog

Cozy bar with cocktails and bites makes a nice happy hour spot or a place to grab a late nosh.

What to order: The fried pickle appetizer was one of our favorite things we ate in Grand Forks. Had we not been traveling with a baby, we would have tried some other dishes and paired it all with a signature martini.

The Toasted Frog: Location | Website

Blue Moose Bar & Grill

Classic American fare in a lively, cabin-like setting makes this a popular place for locals to gather.

What to order: They have a few types of walleye on the menu, which we’d recommend trying as it is a true Midwest classic. Upon our server’s suggestion, we ordered it pan-fried and truthfully, it was too much breading for what we prefer. We’d give it another try, but next time we’d choose one of the grilled or broiled preparations.

Blue Moose Bar & Grill: Location | Website

More Grand Forks restaurant suggestions

We could only eat so much during our 2-day visit to Grand Forks. #travelbloggerproblems

We made a big list of all the places we want to hit on our next visit (based off recommendations we got!), so we thought we’d share them with you in case you have more time to eat your way around Grand Forks.

This place looks like it would be right up our alley. If you’re in search of a lighter take on American cuisine, Ely’s serves up salad bowls and other farm-to-table fare. This would likely be our first stop next time in Grand Forks!

Ely’s Ivy: Location | Website

Up North Pizza

If you’re a big pizza fan, this joint on the east side of the river serves up some of the best pies in the city. With unique topping combinations like their “Duck Duck Goat” which has bechamel sauce, roasted duck, grapes, goat cheese, candied pecans and arugula, this pizza joint is well worth a spot on your Grand Forks itinerary. If we’re ever back in GF, we’ll be sure to make it here!

Up North Pizza & Pub: Location | Website

This local haunt has a handful of locations around town, but this is the original. This Grand Forks staple has been in business since 1961 and remains a town icon to this day.

Known for a Midwest spin on Mexican* cuisine, the menu has tacos, tostadas and their beloved “grinder” sandwich, expect a line and no-frills. In fact, they serve all of their dishes on paper plates and don’t have forks (just spoons!).

*By “Mexican cuisine”, I want to be specific and say that it is very much Midwest-American-Mexican. Think ground hamburger “taco meat”, cheddar cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, hard shell tacos. We’re huge fans of traditional Mexican food , so we feel the need to clarify this is a whole different genre of cuisine!

Red Pepper: Location | Website

Sky’s Restaurant

If you’re looking for a meal that’s on the fancier side, Sky’s Restaurant fits the bill. With elevated American cuisine and handcrafted cocktails, this restaurant makes a great date night spot. Make a reservation if you’re planning to visit on the weekend.

Sky’s Restaurant: Location | Website

Parrot’s Cay Tavern

If you’re a fan of dives, look no further. My sister has been here and says this place serves up some fantastic chicken wings!

Parrot’s Cay: Location

DogMahal DogHaus

For a super unique food-slash-entertainment experience, the DogMahal has hot dogs (supposedly some of the best in North Dakota), poutine, vinyls, comics and live music all in one place. Part hipster haunt, part dingy dive, this place earns rave reviews and speaks to a certain soul… perhaps that’s you?!

Comments (5) on “ 19 Fun Things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota ”

Up North pizza is in East Grand Forks, MN. Yes, it’s right across the river from Grand Forks, but it would be nice if East Grand Forks got the recognition.

Scheels started in Moorhead. Do your research…..

Thanks, Dan, for your thoughtful and not at all rude comment 😉 Fun Fact: Yes, Scheels hardware store started back in 1927 in Moorhead. But the Scheels flagship sports superstore opened in 1989 in Grand Forks, ND.

Turtle River is definitely worth the drive! When the Red River is high, you can drive out a little further to Larimore Dam and kayak the lake. You hit some of the real culinary highlights, but next time you come through, try out some of the also-excellent, less-midwestern fare: House of Punjab, King Pho, Casa Mexico, Chino Latino, and Safari (inside the African Market north of UND). I’ve also heard good things about the new Nepalese place on South Washington, but havent been yet.

You missed an awesome restaurant by passing up MO’s Cafe in the south Washington mall near Rumors! Great food made by real chefs who know what they are doing…no shortcuts there! Wonderful!!

The Best Things To See And Do In Unique Grand Forks, North Dakota

grand forks nd places to visit

  • Destinations
  • North Dakota
  • United States

Grand Forks, about 80 miles south of the Canadian border along Interstate 29, is home to one of the top collegiate hockey programs in the United States as well as the Grand Forks Air Force Base. It’s also been the site of some of the worst flooding in American history. Here are some of the best things to see and do in this unique city.

Things To Do In Grand Forks

From bird-watching to exploring the historic downtown along the Red River, Grand Forks offers plenty of ways for visitors to enjoy themselves. The city is home to a great culinary scene, fun college sports, and lots of quirky culture.

Here’s what to do on a trip to the area.

Appreciate Regional Creativity At The North Dakota Museum Of Art

The North Dakota Museum of Art is perfectly situated in the nearly 120-year-old former University of North Dakota gymnasium and is home to a series of special exhibits featuring regional artists. Highlighting everything from contemporary Native American life to Chinese vases, the North Dakota Museum of Art challenges visitors to expand their horizons and conceptions of art. The museum also includes permanent collections, such as the apartment and studio exhibit of New York artist Barton Lidice Benes and an outdoor sculpture garden.

Learn About The 1997 Red River Flood

Grand Forks has been the site of several of the worst floods in American history. The flood of 1997 crested at nearly 55 feet, forcing the evacuation of about 50,000 people and causing more than $3.5 billion in damage to the region. The downtown area suffered major damage from flooding and fires.

Today, thanks to a new floodwall, the Red River safely flows through the area, and there’s a walking and cycling trail located near where the floodwaters crested. The downtown buildings were renovated with respect to their historical appearance. On a walk through the area, you’ll see the county courthouse and newspaper office, as well as a flood monument featuring poster-sized photos of the damage and a unique sculpture celebrating the heroes who rescued residents from impending doom. A small streetside park features interesting art pieces, including a bicycle sculpture.

The Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks.

Tour The Ralph Engelstad Arena

The University of North Dakota is home to one of college hockey’s best programs; the Fighting Hawks have captured seven national championships and produced dozens of professional hockey players. Whether or not you’re a hockey fan, a tour of the Ralph Engelstad Arena is a must when visiting Grand Forks. From the giant scoreboard that encompasses about a third of the hockey rink to the championship hallway featuring floor-to-ceiling photos of some of the best players to advance to the National Hockey League, you’ll see what makes the sport so important to Grand Forks.

Watch For Birds At Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge

Home to more than 300 bird species, Kellys Slough National Wildlife Refuge , about 20 minutes west of Grand Forks, offers nature enthusiasts a fun place to bird-watch. Ducks, dowitchers, and the American avocet can all be found at the wetlands. The refuge has three trails — two that are about a quarter of a mile long and a third that’s about 2 miles long. The area attracts more than 30,000 birds each spring and summer.

Enjoy A Drink At A Craft Brewery

If you’re looking for great brews, you won’t be disappointed — Grand Forks is home to two fantastic craft breweries. Rhombus Guys Brewing Company , located in Grand Forks’s historic opera house, sells unique IPAs, pales, and stouts in its 15-barrel brewhouse. You can also order a pizza or sandwich during your visit. If you’re up for a challenge to your taste buds, try the brown ale or green tea pale ale at Half Brothers Brewing Company in downtown Grand Forks.

Sample Fine Wine At Grape Mill Vineyard & Winery

Cross the Red River and head into East Grand Forks, Minnesota, to sample some excellent northern wine. With a short growing season, Grape Mill Vineyard & Winery uses the best cold-weather grapes to create their white and red wines. Open Friday through Sunday, Grape Mill is the perfect spot for relaxing before dinner and unwinding after an action-packed day.

Experience Cold War History At The Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site

Grand Forks Air Force Base was once home to 150 missiles pointed at the Soviet Union and its allies during the Cold War . Today, you can tour the Ronald Reagan Minuteman Missile State Historic Site near Cooperstown, North Dakota, about 90 minutes southwest of Grand Forks. See the launch control facility and the place where the missile crew spent their 24-hour assignments on alert.

Where To Shop In Grand Forks

Known for its chippers, or chocolate-covered potato chips, Carol Widman’s Candy in downtown Grand Forks is one of three locations in the area. The tasty treats combine the sweetness of chocolate with the saltiness of potato chips. Once you try them, you’ll be hooked! The store also features a variety of locally produced goodies, such as chocolates, sunflower seeds, and chocolate roses.

Art lovers will adore Badman Design , featuring the creations of metalsmith David Badman. The artist produces jewelry, metal flags, and religious works. If you love antiques and vintage finds, head to the Plain and Fancy Antique Mall , where you’ll find almost anything you desire, including home goods, clothing, and fun knickknacks.

Best Restaurants In Grand Forks

From pub food to upscale dining, the Grand Forks area has it all. Look for steaks prepared to order, burgers, and poutine, a northern favorite.

Tavern United

Located inside the Canad Inns Destination Centre, Tavern United is a favorite hangout following University of North Dakota sporting events. But it’s a great choice at any time. The menu focuses on pub food — mainly burgers and sandwiches — but the poutine is a must. Featuring French fries smothered in dark gravy and fried cheese curds and topped with meats such as pulled pork, bacon, and buffalo chicken, the Canadian dish has found a home in Grand Forks.

The Toasted Frog

Don’t worry about ordering the frog legs at The Toasted Frog , but definitely try the fried cheesy pickles starring dill pickles wrapped in Havarti cheese and fried and served with a side of sriracha. The entrees are rather good, too — wood-fired sandwiches, lavash flatbread pizza, elk burgers, and more.

Sky’s Fine Dining

Featuring an upscale menu of steaks, such as filet mignon and New York strip, Sky’s also offers grilled salmon with a special North Dakota sauce. The restaurant is perfect for a romantic night out. Sky’s also offers an outstanding Sunday brunch, with items such as smoked salmon eggs Benedict and huge bananas Foster pancakes.

The Blue Moose

The Blue Moose has all the classic bar food, like burgers, wings, and fries. They also offer great dry-aged steak, barbecue ribs, and fresh walleye. Located along the Red River in East Grand Forks, the restaurant provides lovely views as well.

The Urban Stampede

The Urban Stampede , a downtown coffeehouse, is located inside an old furrier shop and features Wild West saloon-style decor. Order a coffee, and you’ll half expect the barkeep — er, barista — to slide it down the bar to you. Instead, they’ll make you the drink of your choice, talk to you a little about the history of the place, and let you enjoy your drink. The coffeehouse also features “the world’s smallest art gallery,” with paintings and sculptures in a corner.

Best Places To Stay In Grand Forks

With nearly three dozen national chain hotels to choose from, Grand Forks offers plenty of reasonably priced places to rest your head after a long day of shopping or exploring.

However, if you’re looking for a unique choice, consider the Canad Inn Destination Centre , connected to the convention center and the University of North Dakota’s domed stadium. It feels like a small town inside a hotel. There are several restaurants on-site, including Tavern United, ’l Bistro , and Garbonzo’s Pizza & Arcade , so you won’t need to leave the hotel to get some great bites.

Eight cool things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota

With so many legendary things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota, it might just be the coolest city you’ve never visited.

When you roll into town, you’re immediately greeted by a winky smile on the city’s water tower – and the cool factor doesn’t stop there. Grand Forks is filled with cool places to eat, things to do, and friendly people you’ll never forget. Here are some of our favorite (and very cool) things to do in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Our visit to Grand Forks was hosted, and Travel North Dakota sponsored this post. The opinions expressed and cool memories are our own.

Things to do in Grand Forks: get saucy at Red Pepper

Your first stop in Grand Forks must be Red Pepper . Grand Forks residents will tell you there’s no reason to mess with perfection, which is why the iconic Red Pepper has remained basically unchanged since it opened in 1961.

Things to do in Grand Forks Red Pepper

Locals wait patiently in line for tasty tacos, cheese tostadas, and the famous grinder. They are all served on thin paper plates and with strangely addictive sauces. When you go, be sure to try one of their ever-popular grinders. It’s a basic sub sandwich, but taco meat and a mysterious white sauce take it to a whole new level. Trust us on this one. If you’re feeling even more adventurous, order the garbage plate.

PIN FOR LATER

Warm up with a cup of coffee.

In the heart of downtown, warm up with a cup of coffee at Urban Stampede or try one of their brightly colored, cool “concoctions.”  We tried the Blueberry Muffin and the Green Machine concoctions paired with a freshly baked scone. Both smoothies were made with all natural ingredients and not loaded with extra sugar or calories.

For a super-cool experience and delicious cup of coffee, ask one of the talented baristas for a pour-over. It takes a few minutes to craft your cup of Joe, but it’s well worth the wait and something you don’t see at most coffee shops.

Things to do in Grand Forks: grab a bite

In my humble opinion, Grand Forks may well be the bar food capitol of the world. With dozens of bars and restaurants serving up local brews and fried favorites, there are tasty burgers, nachos, and wings on every corner.

The Toasted Frog , for instance, offers upscale bar food alongside well-crafted cocktails. This North Dakota favorite also has daily pasta, steak, and fish specials and serves new twists on old favorites. Be sure to try their fried pickle appetizer. There’s nothing quite like biting into a fresh-out-of-the-fryer dill pickle spear wrapped in Havarti cheese and a wonton wrapper. You’ll find similar fried pickles on menus across North Dakota, but this is the original. Dipped in a creamy Sriracha sauce, it is also our favorite.

Check out the cool art in Grand Forks

Do public art projects get any cooler than this? Grand Forks is full of interesting and totally Instagramable art. Take a walk around town and find unique art like this giant blue head with a planter for hair!

Also, watch for the installation of metal light pillars downtown designed and created by a local artist. We saw the metalwork in production at Badman Design , and can’t wait to return to see the project installed. The design honors the Red River that runs through town, and will, in part, commemorate the flood of 1997 that changed Grand Forks forever.

Artist David Badman is a metalsmith and jewelry designer who has been in downtown Grand Forks for more than 33 years. Stop in the studio to meet this cool dude and see (or purchase) some of the pieces he’s designed.

Things to do in Grand Forks: enjoy the outdoors

After the flood of 1997 destroyed much of the downtown, residents knew that rebuilding everything just wasn’t a wise option. Instead, they turned the flood-prone areas into the Greenway , a 2,200 acre outdoor recreation wonderland that takes Grand Forks’ cool factor to a whole new level.

Things to do in Grand Forks trails

Take a bike ride (you can rent one in town) or go for a jog on more than 20 miles of beautiful trails that snake along the banks of the scenic Red River. Try to make par at one of two golf courses or three disc golf courses. Feeling a little more outdoorsy than that? Cast a line and do a little shore fishing or even set up camp and sleep under the stars in this zone that’s twice the size of New York’s Central Park.

Things to do in Grand Forks biking

Outdoor adventure doesn’t stop there. Head a little ways out of town and find Turtle River State Park . We had fun hiking the trails and enjoying the woods, while seeing others camping, mountain biking, and fishing.

Things to do in Grand Forks Turtle River State Park

In the winter, the park is a great destination for cross-country skiing. It is a quiet, relaxing place that provides a nice escape from the city.

Visit a brewery

After all that exercise, you’ll probably want to wet your whistle, so head to one of Grand Forks’ great breweries like  Rhombus Guy’s Brewing Company . Sit back and sip one of their cold beers while munching on some great food. Ann tried the veggie burger and has raved about it ever since. I loved the appetizers (I could eat all the pretzel sticks) and found my Cuban sandwich to be absolutely delicious.

Things to do in Grand Forks Rhombus Guys

The real stars, however, are the great beers brewed and bottled right there in the building. Rhombus Guys offers a wide variety of beers from dark to hoppy to light and refreshing. Truly, there’s something for every taste.

Things to do in Grand Forks Rhombus Guys

Also located in Grand Forks are Half Brothers Brewing Company , Oxford Brewing Company, JL Beers , and Brick and Barley . We didn’t have a chance to visit all of those on this trip, but we definitely will try to get to them the next time we’re in town.

Engage in a little retail therapy

Unwinding with a little retail therapy is another of the many enjoyable things to do in Grand Forks. Chic downtown boutiques like Kittsona and Geneva’s Found Goods sell clothing, North Dakota gift items, and décor. You’re sure to find a cool souvenir and maybe will even get to check some boxes on your holiday shopping list.

Have some dessert

At the end of your day, you’ll be looking for one more thing to do in Grand Forks: have dessert. And the only thing hard about that in Grand Forks is deciding where to go for it.

You really must stop by Widman’s , a candy shop unlike any other. They’re famous for their “Chippers,” which are ripple potato chips covered in milk, dark, or white chocolate, as well as other candy confections like peanut butter. Each bite is the perfect embodiment of the sweet-salt cycle. You’ll tell yourself you’ll just have a few, but you know that’s a lie. Simply looking at this picture makes my mouth water!

Things to do in Grand Forks Widman's chippers box

But Chippers aren’t the only candy offered at Widman’s. They’ve taken the cool factor to a whole new level with a wide variety of chocolate-covered treats that we promise you’ve never thought of or thought you wanted to try. Sample their chocolate-covered green olives or bacon, for instance. Really. Looking at the plate you can see that they sell well.

Things to do in Grand Forks Widman's

If you’re looking for a more traditional (and literally cooler) dessert, may we suggest T and Crepe Café ? Order a bubble tea and then step up to the counter and watch with eager anticipation as they pour sweet cream and your choice of flavorings on a frozen flat top. See as they mix, knead and hand roll your ice cream to come up with a creation like this:

Things to do in Grand Forks tea and crepe

Or stand and watch as they prepare a fresh crepe for you. It’s fun to see the building process from batter on the flat top to the fresh ingredient-filled treat below. Yum!

One more cool thing we didn’t do in Grand Forks

Sadly, we were not in Grand Forks during hockey season. However, we understand that seeing a University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena is, by far, THE COOLEST thing to do there. Guess we’ll have to come back.

We’d like to thank North Dakota Tourism , Greater Grand Forks , and Downtown Forks for hosting us and showing us such a cool time in your city and state.

Have you visited Grand Forks, North Dakota? What are your favorite things to do there?

For me, this is one of the coolest things to do in Grand Forks in winter. As an avid ice hockey fan, I think this is a fun evening activity for young and old.

The Ralph Engelstad Arena is worth a visit, even for non-hockey fans.

The arena is one of the top college hockey arenas in the world. Even the spectator seats are made from cherry wood and real leather.

This came as an absolute surprise to us, but North Dakota is actually a prime spot for seeing the Northern Lights.

Watching the ribbons of green, blue, and yellow dance across the star-filled North Dakota sky is such a unique experience. During your visit, you can check the National Weather Service for Grand Forks for alerts.

Go about 20-30 miles outside of the town to avoid light pollution. If you go in winter, bring a winter emergency kit with you!

The Grand Forks County Historical Society Myra Museum was constructed in 1976. The architecture of the house reflects the Gothic Revival style of the Campbell House.

The museum showcases the history of Grand Forks, beginning with the Ice Ages. You will learn about the settlement period and other interesting times for the region.

Visiting the Myra Museum is a great way to learn about the history and culture of Grand Forks, ND.

Sun halos are a super magnificent occurrence you can see in Grand Forks in Winter. They are also known as 22-degree halos.

Sun halos can occur due to the sunlight refracting in millions of hexagonal ice crystals. The result is a beautiful halo around the sun.

I was able to witness this multiple times during my stay in Grand Forks, and I was completely enchanted.

Sun Halo above Grand Forks North Dakota

The Splashers of the South Seas waterpark is a fun destination for young and old. It is the largest indoor waterpark in North Dakota.

You can find it at the Canad Inns Destination Center Grand Forks. The Splasher’s of the South Seas offers a variety of different waterslides, tube rides, activity pools, and even a lazy river.

In my opinion, this is even more fun when the outside temperatures are below the freezing point.

This makes it a perfect fun activity in Grand Forks in winter and is one of the best kid-friendly things to do in Grand Forks.

The North Dakota Museum of Art is one of the top FREE things to do in Grand Forks in winter. The museum is located on the university campus, which is a cool sight as well.

They have several nice artworks inside the museum. On the outside, you can find a couple of nice sculptures in their garden.

They have changing exhibitions of national, regional, and international artists. When I was there, they had a cool installation where you could throw balls at a chicken sculpture.

The Museum is one of the most beloved tourist attractions in Grand Forks.

The Grand Forks Fire Hall Theater is – as the name already suggests, a theatre in an old fire hall.

In this cool, historical spot they put on live shows, performances, and events.

Check out their website to see what shows are currently happening – and be ready for a fun evening full of entertainment.

The Grand Forks Town Square is the place to be in winter. I know it can be cold – but hear me out. They have a Santa’s village there every year!

Check out the sweetly decorated tree or buy something at one of the market stalls right next to it. As a Christmas lover – this is an amazing experience.

This is one of the coolest things to do in Grand Forks in winter.

The Town Square is also the place where the Farmers Market takes place.

The Plain & Fancy Antique Mall in Grand Forks is so much more than an antique store.

Many people outright compare it with a museum – because there are so many hidden treasures in this store.

Thousands of antiques and collectibles are for sale at the Antique Mall. The prices are pretty fair, so why not buy an interesting souvenir in this store?

Every year, the Grand Forks Park District Association hosts winter fun activities at the Greenway and Lincoln Drive Park.

They offer a cross-country ski trail and a family pleasure skating rink. Also, there is a sledding and snowboarding hill, which is a whole lot of fun!

Check out the homepage of the Grand Forks Park District for Opening times and directions.

If you are really into winter sports, I also suggest checking out the Turtle River State Park .

The Japanese Gardens in Grand Forks are always worth a visit, even in winter.

When we visited the Gardens, they were covered in a thick blanket of fresh snow, which offered a super wholesome picture. This is a sweet outdoor activity in Grand Forks.

There are a couple of interesting things to see in the Japanese Gardens. Especially the traditional Japanese lanterns were interesting to check out.

They were gifted to Grand Forks by their sister city, Awano, as a token of friendship.

The Veterans Memorial Park in Grand Forks was built as an outdoor gathering place for veterans, military members, families, and community members to honor the sacrifice of those who have served in the military.

The most interesting feature of the park is the five obelisks. Each one of them represents one branch of service in the military.

The Memorial Wall is very interesting as well. Make sure to stop by the Visitors Center for some historical information.

Downtown Grand Forks is also a fun place to visit. Parking is free, so you can stay nice and warm when arriving in your car.

There are some cute, small boutiques Downtown that you will absolutely love. Younger people love Downtown Axe or the Escape Room Grand Forks.

If you want to take a break from all that exploring, check out Tea & Crepe for an afternoon snack.

View of Grand Forks from Above with snow covered roofs

The campus of the University in North Dakota is worth a visit. Whether you just check out the pretty architecture or visit the Center for Aerospace Sciences – it can be totally interesting to see.

The Grape Mill Vineyard & Winery is located in East Grand Forks, but it is still worth a visit.

I absolutely love wine, especially participating in wine tastings abroad. Plus, a bottle of local wine always makes for a nice souvenir.

four glasses of wine

The Half Brothers Brewing Company is a great place in Grand Forks to sample some beer.

Their beer menu is quite special. Besides the classics, you can also find Pink Fluffy Unicorns Dancing on Rainbows beer, Wedding Wheat, and a Bully Brew Coffee Brown Ale .

They even have a quirky show with some merchandise and a beer shop, so you can bring your favorites home.

Fried Pickles sound somewhat odd, I know. However, don’t know it until you’ve tried it.

Fried Pickles originate in the South of the US, but the people of North Dakota have a very special way of preparing them.

The pickle spears are wrapped in havarti-cheese and then dipped in batter. Lastly, the whole thing is fried and served with a sriracha dip.

You can try the best-fried pickles at a restaurant called The Toasted Frog . Not only are the pickles really great, but they also serve amazing pizza and specialty beers.

If you have a sweet tooth like me, you will absolutely love Widman’s Candy Shop .

The Widman family has owned this shop since 1885 (!), so it has been in their family for four generations. If someone knows how to make candy, it is the Widman family.

The interior is super cheerful and you can try lots of free samples.

But the true highlight in the store is the famous “chippers”. Chippers are potato chips covered in chocolate. YUMMY!

East Grand Forks is a town in Minnesota. Grand Forks and East Grand Forks are only separated by the Red River from each other.

You can quickly drive over the JFK Memorial Bridge or the Sorlie Memorial Bridge and you will be in an entirely different state.

Both bridged look super pretty, especially at night.

Red River Separating Grand Forks from East Grand Forks

Visiting Memorials is always on top of my to-do list for every place we visit. I find it important to not only see the cheerful things but also learn about the hardships and difficulties of the town.

In 1997, the Great Flood hit Grand Forks. Since the city is so close to the Red River, floods are a common occurrence.

The Flood Memorial Monument was built to remind visitors of the power of nature.

Lastly, the Columbia Mall is the place to be for souvenir shopping.

There are a few nice stores in the mall where you can get everything you need. Plus, there is a great Mexican restaurant in the food court for some lunch.

Sadly, lots of stores were empty when we arrived after the pandemic. Hopefully, the place will be back to its former glory soon!

For more ideas on what to do in Greater Grand Forks in winter check out the Grand Forks Tourism Website .

Shopping bags in a hotel room

There are so many cool and fun events in Grand Forks in winter that you absolutely need to visit. Here are some of my favorite events:

Santas Village: Bring one non-perishable food item or toy per person as a donation and gain entry to the lovely Santas Village. You can sip a cup of hot cocoa, join the Breakfast with Santa or visit the Elf Academy!

Dates : usually end of November until Christmas

Location : 1300 S. Washington Street

Greenway Ski Day: This is a free winter event where you can try, among other things, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. The Greenway Ski Day is held annually in February.

Holiday Dazzle Festival of Lights : Held every year on the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, including a lighted parade, caroling, cookie decorating, and even fireworks!

While Grand Forks is a relatively small city, they have a surprising amount of great quality restaurants. Whether you are craving Thai food or the traditional North Dakota fried pickles – there is a great option for everyone. Here are my favorite best  restaurants in Grand Forks, ND:

  • The Toasted Frog (fried pickles, beer specialties, casual dining)

Yes, Grand Forks has a lot of snow. The seasonal snow period starts usually at the end of October and lasts until the end of April. The month with the most snow is December. On average there are 2.8 inches of snow in Grand Forks.

It snows quite a lot in Grand Forks North Dakota. The snow period of the year lasts for almost six months, from October 27 to April 24.  It has a sliding 31-day snowfall of at least 1.0 inches.

Grand Forks ND is one of the coldest cities in North America. The lowest temperature recorded in Grand Forks North Dakota was -43 °F. The coldest month in Grand Forks is January, with an average low of 0°F and a high of 17°F.

There are many great fun activities in Grand Forks in Winter. Catch a hockey game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, see the Northern Lights, participate in winter sports, Check out the Santas Village, see the Myra Museum, witness a sun halo, and many more amazing ideas.

Grand Forks, North Dakota is so cold because air masses from the polar region bring insanely cold and dry air to the city.

There are so many fun things to do in Grand Forks ND in winter , that it is hard to make a choice. The winters get incredibly cold, so I have mainly suggested indoor activities in this post.

Catching a hockey game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena or an Art exhibition at the North Dakota Museum of Art is always a good idea. Winter sports lovers should check out the Greenway for some fun cross-country skiing and ice skating.

Culinary enthusiasts will be excited to try the famous Chippers or the North Dakota fried pickles.

My 8 Favorite Restaurants In Grand Forks, North Dakota

“Small but mighty” perfectly describes Grand Forks, North Dakota. The city of 60,000 sits just an hour south of the Canadian border, making it a favored destination for Canucks to hop across the line for a weekend getaway. It’s also a college town and a busy agricultural hub, so there’s always plenty going on.

And that holds true for the food scene as well. From the Midwest’s best breakfast at Darcy’s Cafe to mouth-watering caramel rolls and chicken tortilla soup at The Red Pepper to chocolate-covered ripple chips at Widman’s Candy Store, Grand Forks is an unexpected culinary dream.

1. Casa Mexico

You’ll have to hop across the state border into the sister city of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, to get your fill of authentic Mexican fare. But the trip (really only 2 minutes over the bridge) will be worth it! Step into Casa Mexico and grab one of the coveted booths for a cozy dining experience. Warm tortilla chips and housemade salsa will be at your table before you even crack open the extra-large menu.

What To Order At Casa Mexico

While it’s nearly impossible to pick a favorite, the chimichanga platter reigns supreme in my world. I like the deep-fried, flour tortilla stuffed with beef (chicken is available too), but I especially love the Spanish rice and refried beans that accompany the piping hot plate. Can’t decide what to order? There are 27 combination plates that offer a little taste of everything.

Pro Tip: Their fresh and delicious salsa is available for takeout! Get a container or two to go for late-night chips and salsa.

2. Harry’s Steakhouse

The name “Harry” is no stranger to Grand Forks. The long-standing liquor stores called Happy Harry’s offer a grand selection of wine, spirits, and beers. And now, Harry’s family has a steakhouse ! The vibe here is all 1940s-classic with padded red leather booths, sumptuous wood walls, and a towering wall of bourbon behind the bar. The restaurant sits downtown, right next to the city’s Empire Theater.

What To Order At Harry’s Steakhouse

In the classic chophouse style, the steaks are the stars here, aged at least 21 days and sourced from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska. At 14 ounces, the New York strip is the perfect steak dinner, but if you’re looking to splurge, the 22-ounce bone-in ribeye is it. All sides are a la carte and come in shared portions. Harry’s-style hashbrowns start with shredded potatoes that are crispy fried then topped with onion, apple-wood smoked bacon, and crumbled bleu cheese. A dish of Brussels sprouts is also a must, graced with more bacon, more bleu cheese, dried cherries, and balsamic.

Pro Tip: A seat at the bar gives you dinner and a show as the skilled bartenders create classic cocktails. The El Mundo Libre is Harry’s twist on the margarita, featuring blanco tequila, orange liqueur, jalapeno agave nectar, and lemon.

3. The Red Pepper

Since 1961, it’s been difficult to put The Red Pepper into a category. Is it a taco stand, late-night Mexican restaurant, or sandwich shop? It’s all that and much more, serving up no-frills food from three Grand Forks locations, including the original and iconic red-clad building that’s become a landmark.

What To Order At The Red Pepper

While the tacos, tostadas, and enchiladas are always tempting, it’s the chicken tortilla soup that I crave. Thick, creamy, and with more than a little kick, it comes topped with Colby cheese and warm tortilla chips on the side. If I’m extra ravenous, a garbage plate does the trick, with tostadas, lettuce, seasoned ground beef, and lots of sauces piled high.

Pro Tip: There are no forks at The Red Pepper. There are big messy plates of crumbling enchiladas and heaping salads, but no forks. It’s spoons only. Don’t ask me why.

4. Darcy’s Cafe

It could be a movie set; it’s that cool. And it’s breakfast all day at Darcy’s Cafe , the quintessential Midwest diner that promises food “better than your grandma’s, as good as your mom’s.” Look for the low-slung white building on North Washington, then take a seat at one of the tables or plunk down at the lunch counter for daily home-cooked meals from early morning to just after lunch. You may sit next to a farmer, trucker, student, or food blogger.

What To Order At Darcy’s Cafe

Dave’s Special includes your choice of hash browns or American fries topped with sausage, bacon, ham, onions, mixed peppers, cheese, and two eggs, plus toast or pancakes. It’s most often ordered by really hungry patrons and people named Dave. I can’t resist the pecan caramel roll and a side order of crispy bacon to get the day started. In the mood for lunch? Burgers and sandwiches come with your choice of side, which includes tater tots.

Pro Tip: Darcy’s Cafe has excellent merch, from generous coffee cups to sharp-looking t-shirts with the diner’s logo.

5. Up North Pizza

The open-concept, industrial vibe inside Up North Pizza makes it a favorite for family lunches, late dinners, and gathering with friends to watch the big game. Everyone feels right at home in this place, located in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, within shouting distance of North Dakota.

What To Order At Up North Pizza

With names like Schnitzengiggles, Yeee-Row, and Cheesus Mary ‘N Joseph, it’s almost as much fun picking what to order as eating your pie. I’m a fan of the Gnarly Charlie with house red sauce, pepperoni, pineapple, and jalapeno pesto for a good, strong kick. Their mac and cheese is also stellar, with butter-baked bread crumbs and smoked chicken. Speaking of smoked: The wings are nearly addictive, especially with the Jamaican jerk rub.

6. Urban Stampede

If it’s coffee you’re craving, a visit to downtown Urban Stampede is a must. The doors opened in 1993, making it one of the state’s oldest coffee shops. Located in a gorgeously original historic building, the eclectic shop is a meeting place for downtown dwellers and visitors alike, with its cozy booths, communal tables, and lunch counter. Funky art, community notices, and happy tunes prevail.

What To Order At Urban Stampede

The revolving menu of seasonal favorites should most definitely be sampled. Quality beans from Dogwood Coffee Co. in Minneapolis are freshly roasted and delivered weekly, so the brews are always delicious. Try the signature Thai iced coffee with cardamon and condensed milk for a flavor bomb, or try the tried-and-true salted caramel latte. Take a seat, sip at your leisure, browse the shop, and stay awhile.

7. Bernie’s

Bernie’s sits in the former home of the beloved Whitey’s Wonderbar, a space that served East Grand Forks for almost 100 years. The new incarnation is the brainchild of Food Network show host Molly Yeh from Girl Meets Farm and her husband Nick Hagen. Patrons are thrilled to see the original horseshoe bar perfectly preserved as a service counter for Bernie’s midwestern fare.

What To Order At Bernie’s

The breakfast sandwich is a standout with potato and cheddar baked eggs, local Swiss cheese, and ham. Get it in the square, freshly-baked English muffin and satisfy your sweet tooth with a ginormous ripple chip and chocolate chip cookie. At lunch, a local bologna sandwich gets served up with mayo and lettuce on country white. Get it with a side of fried cheese curds.

Pro Tip: Step up to the counter to place your order then browse the general store in the lobby. Pick up Yeh’s cookbooks, ready-to-go treats, and flour milled in North Dakota.

8. Tea & Crepe

Whether it’s the cold grip of winter or the blazing heat of summer, Tea & Crepe always has plenty of patrons awaiting Asian-inspired treats including coffee, bubble tea, crepes, and rolled ice cream. The downtown location makes it a great place to pick up a cup or bowl and head for a stroll down by the river.

What To Order At Tea & Crepe

Start with a mango milk tea then indulge yourself with the TC Signature crepe which includes banana, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, mango, pistachio, custard cream, chocolate pearls, and whipped yogurt — everything but the kitchen sink it seems! Or if you’re craving ice cream, the Bumblebee rolled ice cream treat includes bananas and Nutella.

Bonus Bite: Pop into Widman’s Candy Shop in downtown Grand Forks and pick up some Chippers. What are they, you ask? Red River Valley ripple potato chips are dipped in milk chocolate, dark chocolate (semi-sweet), or white almond for a sweet and salty taste sensation.
