Greyhound Lines is an American bus company offering an extensive network of bus routes in the United States since 1914. With over 1.300 buses and 16 million passengers each year, Greyhound is the leader in city-to-city bus travel in the United States.

The company offers low-cost, reliable, safe, and environmentally friendly travel solutions in 48 states and 1.600 cities. Greyhound is part of a network of bus companies that sell tickets on each other's routes, allowing connections to even more locations.

In many places in the country, Greyhound is the only bus company connecting small towns to larger cities. To many people, the iconic buses are the only way to travel that last mile after a long journey by bus, train or plane.

ⓘ Busbud Tip:  though the buses do have WiFi, travelers report that they don't always work. That's expected, as the internet signal comes from phone line towers. When buses travel through remote locations where sometimes the phone signal is low or inexistent, then so is the WiFi service. Also, remember that Greyhound offers limited data per passenger (100MB), which may not last the whole journey on longer trips.

9 Greyhound Bus Tips You Need to Know Before You Travel

All aboard!

greyhound bus travel

For long trips, many would argue that flying is not only quicker, but the view from the sky is so much better.

However, along with that aerial view, comes congested airports, delayed flights, and the dreaded middle seat. Throw in rising airfares, long lines at the security checkpoint, and sketchy in-flight Wi-Fi, and it's a wonder any of us are still choosing to fly over driving. But there is another mode of transportation growing in popularity across many parts of the country—traveling by bus, or more specifically, Greyhound. Okay vacationers, before you rule out reaching your destination on the "Dirty Dog," hear us out: Greyhound is a lot cheaper and, depending on where you're going, faster. There's also free Wi-Fi, and did we mention no TSA? You're welcome.

As someone who has made both short and long-haul trips using Greyhound (I'm talking 20-hour road trips, y'all!), I'm not only making the case for traveling by bus, but I'm also sharing the things you should know to make it a less tedious and safer experience. Hey, it certainly beats spending hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket and having no legroom, right? Here, nine tips for your next great adventure on the open road —er, um—bus:

1. Book your tickets early.

Although it's not the norm, there are a few bus stations that operate like airlines, in that you board by the number on the ticket. If this is the case for the station you're departing from, the earlier you purchase your ticket, the lower your boarding number and cost. A low boarding number also guarantees first dibs on a good seat. Keep in mind, Greyhound has three different fare options to choose from, such as "Economy," "Economy Extra," and "Flexible," and you can also choose an express bus that provides quicker, non-stop service, with fewer (or no) transfers.

2. Arrive at least an hour before departure.

If it's your first time on a Greyhound bus, allow yourself enough time to get checked in and find your gate. On weekends and during peak travel season, this process may take longer, so arriving an hour before gives you more wiggle room.

3. And, get in line as quickly as possible.

Once the station attendant announces that the line for your bus is forming (provided that you're not restricted to a boarding number), make a beeline towards the front. As with any form of transportation, where you sit can make all the difference in your trip. And those passengers who board first have their pick of the seat litter. Trust me, you don't want to spend hours on a bus next to a crying baby.

4. Make your luggage stand out.

Bags are positioned under the bus, and without an identifying marker, design, scarf, or luggage tag, it's hard to tell one black suitcase from another. Placing something on your bag or choosing a brightly-colored suitcase will help you to easily find luggage when you have to switch buses for transfers.

5. Sit at the front.

You'll have a better chance of having two seats all to yourself, since everyone else will, undoubtedly, be heading towards the back of the bus. Personally, I prefer the front because it makes me feel more safe to be closer to the driver. Not to mention, you can make a swift exit when seated near the front, making it easier to get off and grab your luggage just in time for the next transfer.

6. Try not to use the bathroom.

Do we even have to explain this one? Get your bathroom breaks in before boarding and when the bus stops. At least the restrooms at the stations are cleaner, and you have the privacy of a bathroom stall. As a general rule of thumb, I try to eat lighter and limit my water intake.

7. Follow the driver's rules during stops and transfers.

Sure, you haven't had to follow the rules on a bus since you were a kid, but each Greyhound driver has their own set of restrictions to make the ride safer and more enjoyable. During stops and bathroom breaks, the instructions usually involve what time to be back on the bus, what you can and cannot bring back on the bus, and where to go for food.

8. Keep your carry-on bag and ticket with you at all times.

Guard your purse or carry-on with your life. There's no overhead bin or storage like there is on a plane, so if you leave anything on the bus during stops, you run the risk of it being stolen. For that reason, I tend to go for a smaller bag or backpack that's easier to take on and off the bus. And you'll need to show your ticket every time you board the bus, so make sure you have it at the ready.

9. For your safety, stay inside the bus station at night.

Unless your trip is short, you will have layovers, and most of those stops will be at night. No matter how much you want to explore, it's best to stay inside the Greyhound station. Also, make sure you've already made arrangements to be picked up once you arrive at your final destination.

6 Great Options for Cheap Bus Travel in the U.S.

Buses Are an Excellent Option for Student Travelers

If you're looking for a cheap method of transportation to make your way across the United States, you can't go wrong with a bus. Sure, they might be slow and they may not have the best reputation, but when it comes to saving money, they've got you covered.

Greyhound buses have been a staple of U.S. travel for decades, but these days, you have plenty of other alternatives for your journey. Plus, many of the buses in the United States have gone through an impressive upgrade in recent years. Now, it's not uncommon to be offered free snacks and a bottle of water while you connect to the bus' Wi-Fi and use the power socket next to your seat.

In this article, I take a look at every option you have for bus travel in the country, weighing up the pros and cons of each company so that you can figure out which one will be best for your trip.

I've used  BoltBus  several times in the United States and been very happy with my experience every time. They're incredibly affordable if you manage to time your purchase well (you can grab a $1 fare if you book your journey months in advance), but still far more comfortable than Greyhound buses. On a Boltbus, the seats are comfortable, you have a lot of legroom, you have access to power sockets to charge your devices, and you'll even be able to connect to their free Wi-Fi.

Read more: 7 Ways to Get Cheaper BoltBus Tickets

Chinatown Buses

Chinatown buses have been around for over 20 years now, and they serve the East Coast and Southern California to San Francisco (and do a leg to Las Vegas, too). With curbside stops and not a lot of amenities, they're a super-inexpensive option for when your budget is tight. If you need to save money and you'll be traveling one of their routes, they'll most likely be cheapest. Be aware that Chinatown Buses have had some issues with safety in the past, but have upped their game recently, and shouldn't be a problem to travel with.

Greyhound Buses

Greyhound buses still rule the road in the U.S., with far more routes and potential flexibility for you than any of the cheap buses. And you can make your journey cheaper still if you apply a  student discount . Greyhound buses are basic and don't have many of the fancy features of BoltBus and MegaBus, but they're safe and they'll get you where you need to go. For any kind of obscure routes or for crossing the center of the country, look at Greyhound for prices.

Lux Bus America

If you love overland travel, will be traveling in Southern California, and don't mind splurging for higher levels of comfort, Lux Bus America is designed for you. Of particular note is the Los Angeles to Las Vegas route, where you'll find incredibly comfortable seats, free drinks and snacks, pillows and blankets, and seatback entertainment. It's the priciest option out of everything mentioned here, but still cheaper than booking a flight.

Megabus is fairly similar to BoltBus. If you get in early enough, $1 tickets are available, but like BoltBus, if you leave it until the last minute, you could be paying $30 for the exact same ride. While there isn't too much difference in terms of comfort and price with BoltBus, I have found BoltBus buses to be slightly cleaner and more comfortable.

You may have noticed that the small bus companies in the United States tend to focus on the west coast or northern east coast regions of the country. If you'll be hitting up the southern east coast, RedCoach has you covered. With a route that covers the major cities and attractions in Florida, it's worth checking their prices before you book with anyone else. RedCoach has affordable prices and are slightly more luxurious than BoltBus, MegaBus, and Greyhound.

Philadelphia’s roving Greyhound bus station could move by Labor Day, says neighborhood group

Is the third time the charm for Philadelphia’s itinerant intercity bus station?

According to the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association, the Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability (OTIS) informed them that the bus station could move from its current location on the high-traffic Spring Garden Street and North Front Street by Labor Day. The move would be the third time the station has relocated since June.

Neighborhood association leaders say they learned of the move in an email approved by the mayor’s office. The group, which has been critical of the current setup, shared that message on its website Monday .

In its brief dispatch, OTIS told the group it heard from everyone, including carriers and travelers, “We even listened to ourselves!” joked the office.

“We are working with the stakeholders where we are recommending relocation and must collaborate with them to ensure the highest quality information is available and they have the opportunity to have input on the engagement process to be undertaken,” said the message, which did not say if the next move would be a permanent one.

When The Inquirer asked about the announcement, OTIS did not comment on the Labor Day target date and emphasized “ideas are still being developed, options are being weighed, and no plans for relocation have been finalized.”

But even without a final location set, Jeff Hornstein, president of the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association, commended OTIS for being responsive to resident and business feedback.

Critics of the Spring Garden location say that SEPTA buses and bike lanes are blocked by the larger coach buses and passengers are often plopped on sidewalks, with few places to sit or shelter in inclement weather. The neighborhood association has complained of increased traffic brought on by rideshare services dropping off and picking up travelers.

“It’s not easy for [OTIS] to have to go back to the carriers and say, ‘Hey, this isn’t working, so let’s figure out, yet again, a good solution,” said Hornstein.

How the bus saga started

The intercity bus station saga began in June when Greyhound closed its station on Filbert Street in a cost-cutting measure. The Filbert Street setup offered shelter from inclement weather, as well as seating and restrooms.

The station’s first move was to Seventh and Market Streets , which passengers declared a downgrade and Inquirer columnist Inga Saffron called “a humanitarian disaster.” Travelers crouched for shade in front of local businesses and blocked the middle of the sidewalk with their duffel bags and backpacks. As a result, one of the city’s major arteries saw a whole block gummed up by coach buses loading and unloading passengers in the “Red Bus Zone” meant for SEPTA. The clog was such a problem for the local transit agency, that it had three bus routes skip their stops on the block.

By mid-November, the station was moved to Spring Garden as a stopgap. There is a ticket office with 16 bench seats and portable bathrooms.

Still, Hornstein called the switch a “complete disaster” with many of the problems seen with the Market Street setup playing out on Spring Garden.

One possible new home for the stop is a surface parking lot across the street. OTIS presented a rendering of the plan to the neighbor association last month, which included slips for Greyhound, Flixbus, Megabus, and Peter Pan to pick up and discharge passengers. There would be two ticket offices, and the PPA would manage the site. At the time, OTIS said the plans were being reworked and finalized.

OTIS was no more committal on Monday, saying it was still engaging with stakeholders for recommendations and feedback.

“The City is examining other options as well right now, but we don’t want to take anything off the table,” the office said.

Greyhound bus stop in Philadelphia could relocate again, officials tell neighborhood group

By Joe Brandt

Updated on: April 23, 2024 / 10:58 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Intercity bus carriers in Philadelphia — likely including Greyhound, Peter Pan and others — could move from their current location in the city's Northern Liberties neighborhood as soon as Labor Day, officials told a neighborhood group recently .

The Northern Liberties Neighbors Association said they were contacted by Philadelphia's Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability and were told the bus stops will move again.

"We heard from everyone—NLNA, the carriers, the travelers and the market," the NLNA quoted OTIS as saying. "We even listened to ourselves! We will be relocating the intercity carriers to another location."

"We do not know how soon we will vacate Spring Garden," the statement continued, "but our target is by Labor Day."

This would be the third move for intercity bus carriers in less than a year after  Greyhound closed its Filbert Street terminal and relocated its Philadelphia operations to 6th and Market Streets -- a location criticized by riders as lacking shade and access to restrooms .

After months, bus carriers were moved again - this time to a  segment of Noble Street, a small side street south of Spring Garden, tucked between Front Street and Christopher Columbus Boulevard . That location does have restrooms but is in a high-traffic area with little seating.

Megabus picks up its passengers a few blocks away on Spring Garden Street between Front and 2nd streets, according to its website.

NLNA has held several meetings where residents shared concerns about the current intercity bus situation.

OTIS told the group there's no final location where the buses would move -- but in March it floated the idea of taking over a parking lot next to the Lukoil station at Front and Spring Garden streets. The lot could accommodate 10 bus slips and feature spots for Megabus, Peter Pan, Flixbus, Greyhound and Fullington Trailways, a rendering showed.

OTIS said those were "preliminary concepts" and that no plan had been finalized.

In the more recent statement, OTIS did not commit to a new location where the intercity bus companies would be moved.

"We are working with the stakeholders where we are recommending relocation and must collaborate with them to ensure the highest quality information is available and they have the opportunity to have input on the engagement process to be undertaken," OTIS told the group.

A spokesperson for Peter Pan Bus Lines said the company is opening an additional bus stop in Philadelphia at 9th and Market streets and was not aware of any plans to get rid of the Spring Garden stop.

CBS News Philadelphia has reached out to multiple other bus providers for comment and will update this article if we hear back.
