This is the hard-driving debut record from this excellent American trio featuring  former Reverend Horton Heat , Taz Bentley , on the drum kit, as hinted by the album title. Very similar to the output of the Reverend, THE HILLBILLY HELLCATS stir a variation of rocking styles ranging from Neorockabilly to Blues to Country to create something completely new, all backed by very good song-writing and lyrics, far from humdrum. Highlights: Hillbillies On Speed , I Like Whisky , Slappin’ My Baby Around , Dead Man’s Party and I Hate Music .

Our Brand (1998)

Another great twenty-track offering from the late 90's is Our Brand released on Rockin' Cat Records . The second album from the Colorado-based three-piece again shines with excellent musicianship, eclectic variations of all rockin' styles and strong song-writing with themes mostly focusing on 'white trash' and booze. Solid investment for all fans of their debut record and all lovers of wild rockin' Billy sounds. My favourite tracks are Road Rage , Train To Nowhere , Rockabilly Rebel , Double Time and My Baby Drives Me Crazy .

The guest drumming of Taz Bentley, ex Rev. Horton Heat, is heard on this CD.

From the Artist

After looking for a drummer for our band and not finding one,Lance and I wrangled an introduction to Taz by way of a mutual friend, and gave Taz our demo tape wrapped in a $100 bill. We asked him to listen to it to consider if he'd record with us. Seven weeks went by, but one day Taz called and said to meet him in Lawrence at the end of his Tenderloin tour to record the CD. In one and a half long days Taz had put down his parts, and we spent the rest of one week putting down ours. Somehow it seemed like he knew the songs better than we did. -Chuck Hughes

About the Artist

This particular band was a studio project. Lance and Chuck had played together in Colorado for many years doing rockabilly covers. In 1994 they decided to write and record a CD of original songs. They were familiar with Taz's drumming for Rev. Horton Heat, and after not being able to find someone locally to play, decided to ask Taz to make the record. Hillbilly Hellcats have toured the U.S. several times, and have played with 14 different drummers during that time. They have only played once live with Taz.
