The 12 Toolbox Talks of Holiday Safety

Protective helmet, mason tools and Christmas decorations on wooden background

The holidays are a busy time for everyone. There’s something to be said about the right decorations to set the tone for the season. But unfortunately for some, the holidays are also a time when injuries and fatalities increase—and it could be because people are so focused on the season that they fail to see the hazards. SafeStart’s gift to you is the 12 Toolbox Talk (Topics) of Holiday Safety, which gives you some holiday-related safety topics to keep employees safe this holiday season.

1.  In the first message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: shoveling and back injuries.

Whether at work or home, snow needs to be removed for safety. A toolbox talk about shoveling and back injuries can bring employees out of the complacency that settles in with this routine task. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than one million workers suffer back injuries each year, and back injuries account for one of every five workplace injuries or illnesses. This toolbox talk should showcase how workers can place minimum stress on the lower back while shoveling snow. Here are some quick shoveling tips to include in a toolbox talk to minimize back injuries.

(1)  Be sure to stretch—as with any physical activity, it’s a good idea to stretch before shoveling to warm up (and prevent pulling) your muscles.

(2)  Choose the right shovel for the job (or use a snow blower if possible)—a shovel that is too big or too small can contribute to back injuries when shoveling. A plastic blade will also be lighter than a metal one. Push the snow rather than lifting for less strain on the back. A smaller blade may mean more shovelfuls to clear the driveway but will prevent lifting more than is necessary.

(3)  Keep proper form—dump snow by pivoting the entire body along the direction of the foot. Keep the back straight, lead with the hips, bend the knees and lift with the leg muscles (not the low back). Avoid twisting the spine.

(4)  Take breaks—people often rush through shoveling snow in order to get it done as soon as possible. It’s important to stop and take breaks at least every 20 minutes to let your muscles rest and your heart rate come down.

2.  In the second message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: working from ladders and decorating.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are about 160 decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season. When you’re focused on the end result, it’s hard to think you could be injured in the process of decorating. Cuts and lacerations from opening packaging or broken ornaments can be a bloody mess. But the number one cause of decorating injuries is falls. Most injuries are related to falling off ladders, stairs, furniture, rooftops and porches. These incidents can result in fractures, concussions and pulled muscles. These 7 Essential Ladder Safety Tips You Need to Know can help make an easy toolbox talk to avoid falls from ladders while decorating.

3.  In the third message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: electrical safety.

The next part of decorating is lights. Businesses often ignite the magic of the season with amazing outdoor displays and complementary office holiday décor, sparking people at home to capture the same magic. But there are people behind the decorating, and it doesn’t happen on its own. Thousands of people are treated each holiday season after sustaining an electric shock. Electric incidents are mostly caused by carelessness and misuse of decorations, and they can be the cause of cardiac arrests as well as tissue and nerve damage, among other dangerous outcomes. These electrical safety basics can be a good reminder for employees whether they’re working with electricity at work or at home.

4.  In the fourth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: emergency preparedness.

The risks from decorating and electrical safety are among the biggest contributors to injuries during the holiday season. This season also sees a rise in heating, cooking and electrical fires—accounting for almost 2,000 fires each year.   The Easy Way to Have a Home Emergency Plan translates the roles and responsibilities of emergency planning from the workplace to home and makes for a great toolbox talk.

5.  In the fifth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: food safety.

In addition to cooking fires, one thing that people often don’t think about is the potential for food poisoning. According to the CDC, 1 in 6 Americans gets sick from food poisoning each year. And approximately 3,000 people die of foodborne diseases. Since people prepare different food than normal over the holidays, the chance of food poisoning increases. Our holiday family safety brochure has great tips to avoid food poisoning that could be used as a toolbox talk or distributed to workers as a handout.

6.  In the sixth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: winter driving.

People travel more than normal during the holiday season, resulting in more drivers on the road. In a recent review of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, nearly 25,000 people were killed, and close to 5,000 were seriously injured in collisions between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Check out Prepare Workers for Winter Driving by Addressing 4 Changing Factors for an easy toolbox talk that will help keep people safer on the roads.

7.  In the seventh message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: slips, trips and falls.

Wintery weather conditions aren’t only a hazard for drivers, as the U.S. Department of Labor reports that slips, trips and falls make up the majority of general industry accidents. Who Is Responsible for Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls? outlines the roles and responsibilities of both employers and employees when it comes to slips, trips and falls and is a great reference for developing a toolbox talk that speaks specifically to prevent them.

8.  In the eighth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: distraction.

As mentioned in the intro to this post, the holidays are a time when your mind is consumed by multiple things. But since your mind can only process one thing at a time, it’s easy to see that distraction can be a big problem that leads to incidents and injuries. When looking to develop a toolbox talk on distraction, look no further than these 6 Resources to Focus on to Fight Distraction .

9.  In the ninth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: rushing.

Leading up to the holidays, employees can feel pressure from their employers to meet increased production demands or compressed timelines. In some instances, companies even provide incentives for early completion or getting extra work done during their shift. These factors create a sense of urgency that leads to rushing, which dramatically increases the risk of injury. Outside of work, additional family tasks, shopping, cooking, cleaning and travel schedules compound this urgency from snowball-sized risk to a snowman-sized risk pyramid. Use this SafeStart story to demonstrate the dangers of rushing.

10.  In the tenth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: frustration.

‘Tis the season to be jolly so how could frustration possibly be a factor? Well, if you combine the ninth and eleventh messages then mistakes, hiccups and frustration won’t be far behind. A toolbox talk about self-triggering on frustrations could go a long way with employees. SafeStart client Ed Stephens from ABB recently delivered a Lunch and Learn session that defined frustration from the behavioral theorist perspective as an obstacle blocking satisfaction of a need or a goal. Check out his presentation (or for a shorter version, you can read this blog post ) on the concept of harvesting frustrations. Since frustrations are seemingly present in every scenario, Ed felt it was important to document his employee’s frustrations and link them back to processes and procedures to determine any deterioration within their management systems.

11.  In the eleventh message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: fatigue.

Fatigue is something that everyone can relate to and it seems to increase over the busy holiday season. But even though people can relate to being fatigued, they often discount the effects that fatigue can have on their safety. They’re “just tired,” after all. A Guide to Personal Fatigue Management provides five actionable tips to lower the impact of fatigue and can easily be used as a toolbox talk.

12.  In the twelfth message on holiday safety, your toolbox talk will be: complacency.

The problem with complacency is that people often don’t realize they’re being complacent. Combine that with the excitement of the holidays and complacency makes people feel like they’re in no danger at all. The thought of needing training on it would not occur to most people so awareness training can go a long way in combating complacency. Check out this blog post that can be adapted into a toolbox talk on the 4 Signs You’re Under the Influence of Complacency .

Now, sing it with us: For twelve (or more) days over the holidays, the toolbox topics SafeStart gave to me:

  • Complacency
  • Fatigue
  • Frustration
  • Rushing
  • Distraction
  • Slips, trips and falls

2023 Holiday Safety Guide

Black Friday pricing has started rolling out. Turkey orders and hotel reservations are being made. And it’s almost time to pull the lights out of the attic. The holidays are here for 92% of Americans who plan to celebrate at least once between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, according to a new UL Standards & Engagement study.

With these celebrations, there is more cooking, shopping, decorating, and traveling — there is also more safety risk. The increase in fires and ER trips during the holidays can be avoided with the right preparation. At ULSE, we’ve been developing safety standards for 120 years that are incorporated into millions of products used or bought for the holidays. Due to their technical and comprehensive nature, standards can be hundreds of pages long, so our team of trained reindeer have condensed the information down to exactly what consumers need to know to keep the season merry, not scary.

Check out our full set of recommendations in the 2023 Holiday Safety Guide   and help ensure that the only red vehicle that pays you a visit is Santa’s sleigh, not your local first responders.

Deck the Halls — Just Don’t Daisy-Chain the Lights

List of Holiday Decorating Safety Tips

Among holiday decorators who display a Christmas tree, 84% say they decorate using an artificial tree, yet more than half (52%) of those respondents said they did not check to see if their tree had a “fire resistant” label.

Gift Buyers Prioritize Price Over Safety

Tips on how to charge devices with lithium-batteries safely

For the 83% of gift buyers who plan to purchase an electronic gift powered by rechargeable batteries, it’s important to be aware of lithium-ion battery safety standards that are designed to limit the consequences of thermal runaway. Unfortunately, while there will be lots of rechargeable gifts under the tree, an alarming number of gift buyers have no idea what’s powering their gifts. How many? Check out the full results on page four of our guide.

The safety considerations are slightly different for children and teens. For the 35% of gift buyers who have a child six years or younger on their lists, standards that strengthen battery enclosures and ultimately prevent the accidental ingestion of coin and button cell batteries can save lives. One of our most recently updated standards, UL 4600, changes the requirements for battery compartments to make it tougher to open accidentally or for button or coin cell batteries to fall out. The Consumer Product Safety Commission just announced the standard as its choice to meet Reese’s Law, named after 18-month-old Reese Hamsmith, who lost her life to accidental battery ingestion in 2020.

Holiday Cooks Should Prepare Their Kitchens for More Than Meals

Holiday cooking tips

Only 29% of the holiday cooks in ULSE’s study reported testing their smoke alarms monthly, as experts recommend. Nearly one-third (31%) do not have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen area. Further, a majority (52%) do not have a carbon monoxide alarm near the kitchen.

There’s also no need to go it alone. More than half (55%) of holiday cooks will share the responsibilities with at least one other adult. Invite them to take over the stove if you need to walk away, take a nap, or run away from visiting family.

Two Risks Travelers Need to Know Before They Go

Holiday Travel Safety Tips

A concerning number of flyers admit to putting rechargeable items in checked luggage, including 26% of passengers who said they check their power banks and portable chargers. So if you are flying this holiday season, stop and think before you pack anything rechargeable in your luggage.

For the 63% of holiday travelers heading over the river and through the wood and opting for a hotel or rental property instead of grandmother’s house, know before you go if your lodging will have a carbon monoxide alarm. There is a strong (and incorrect) assumption of protection, particularly in more upscale hotels, where 67% say they do not worry about exposure because they assume the property has a carbon monoxide alarm installed. The numbers are only slightly lower for economy and mid-scale hotel chains (63%) and for rental property platforms like Airbnb or VRBO (58%). Travelers should know that only 14 states require carbon monoxide alarms in hotels.     ULSE wants you and your family to enjoy an incident-free holiday season. Deck those halls. Make grandma’s stuffing. Find the perfect gift. Fly to loved ones. Here’s to a joyful and safe holiday season!

1. Prepare your home for optimum safety while you’re away.

  • Affordable monitoring
  • No contracts
  • Built-in free cellular connection

If you have a security system installed in your home, ensure that it's working properly—including all alarms, motion detectors, cameras, and other monitoring equipment.

Some DIY home security systems offer optional monitoring. If you usually keep tabs on your system in an app, consider adding 24/7 pro monitoring to your security system for the month in which you'll be traveling.

On top of stepping up security with your alarm system, cancel mail and any regular deliveries. Have a friend or neighbor check on your home while you're away, especially if you'll be gone for a long time. If you live in a snowy climate, make arrangements to have snow cleared while you're away.

2. Have your car inspected or serviced before you leave, and keep an emergency kit in it.

Car trouble is a common issue for travelers  during the holidays. You don't want to end up stuck on the side of the road in cold weather instead of tucked in around the table with a piece of  Grandma's homemade pie.

Be proactive to avoid hazards like a blown tire.  Take your car in for an inspection and any necessary maintenance, particularly on your tires— make sure they're winter-ready and properly inflated for the long drive.

Prepare a car emergency kit with necessities like a safety cone, carjack, flashlight, and jumper cables. Include first aid essentials and extras like a blanket to stay warm if you break down in the cold.

3. Know how to drive safely on icy roads.

holiday travel safety presentation

Study up to ensure you know how to safely navigate icy, wet, or slushy roads. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid driving until roads have been plowed and sanded.
  • Give yourself extra time to get to your destination so you don't rush in suboptimal conditions.
  • Decrease your speed as needed.
  • Leave yourself plenty of room behind other vehicles so you can stop safely on slick roads.

4. Plan the drive ahead of time, and know alternate routes.

Proper planning ensures that you're prepared for whatever might happen during your trip. If you’re driving down a highway and hit construction, a road closure, or severe traffic, it can feel impossible to figure out an alternate route on the fly.

When you plot your course, note alternate routes in advance. Tools like a vehicle navigation system or an app like Waze can alert you to potential snags and reroute you safely. These can be a huge help when it comes to staying on track, avoiding road closures, or finding your way back to the main road if you get lost.

Also, if you want to avoid traffic, time your travel to put you on busy roads before or after peak traffic times.

5. Make frequent rest stops.

Winter driving challenges can tire you out much more than driving in the summer. Make frequent stops to rest or just stretch your legs. It's important to keep your energy level high enough to stay alert on the road. Stopping for even a few minutes every couple hours can do wonders for keeping your energy high.

6. Carry a cell phone and charger.

black anker USB dual car charger

  • Works with iPhone and Android phones
  • Has compact design
  • Ensures safe charging for devices

You never know when or where car troubles may rear their ugly head. A mobile phone lets you call for help, get a tow, or arrange alternative transportation if you run into trouble.

But it won't do you any good if the battery dies. Make sure you grab your phone charger before you leave the house. A wall charger is good when you’re making a stop, but a car charger is better when you're on the road.

If you have a smartphone, you can also download apps to help you in your time of need. If your car insurer has an app, download it before your trip for easy access to roadside assistance. It's also a good idea to download or take a picture of your insurance card.

7. Stay hydrated.

holiday travel safety presentation

Image: Yaroslav Shuraev, Pexels

Dehydration may not be on the top of your list of  holiday travel safety hazards, but not having enough water during a long drive could mean fatigue or decreased alertness—and that's dangerous on the road. Keep a few bottles of water handy, and sip often to keep yourself hydrated throughout the trip.

8. Wash your hands frequently with soap or antibacterial hand sanitizer.

holiday travel safety presentation

Proper hand washing isn't just for pandemic times. The holidays are also smack dab in the middle of flu season. Keeping your hands sanitized is especially important if you're flying or riding a train or bus. Everything you touch has been touched by someone else, including armrests and door handles.

Clean your hands frequently with either soap and water or antibacterial gel or wipes—and for the love of Aunt Betty's homemade stuffing, keep those hands away from your face!

9. Give someone close to you a copy of your trip itinerary and photocopies of important documents.

holiday travel safety presentation

Image: Cottonbro, Pexels

Before you leave, give a copy of your itinerary and all necessary contact information to a relative or friend. This way it will be easy to reach you in case of an emergency, whether you're on your way out or heading back home.

Also, leave photocopies of your passports, credit cards, and any other types of identification with this person in case something happens to the originals and you need a photocopy. It's also smart to keep a separate set of photocopies in your luggage.

The holidays don’t have to be a dangerous time to travel. Use these holiday travel safety tips to be proactive about travel safety. That way you'll spend time focused on the fun, not stressed about something going wrong.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) latest Toy-Related Deaths and Injuries report highlights the importance of safety when buying and playing with kids’ toys – even for older children. The report found there were 11 deaths, and an estimated 145,500 emergency department-treated (ED) injuries in 2022 associated with toys for children 12 years and younger.

The majority of the 11 deaths reported were attributed to choking or asphyxiation associated with small parts, balls, or balloons. Among the ED-treated injuries, non-motorized scooters accounted for the largest share of injuries across all age groups – 35,400. Non-motorized scooters accounted for one in every 5 toy-related injuries to children aged 14 and younger.

Consumers should not only “think safety” about what they buy for children but should also be vigilant about where gifts are purchased, especially online. As e-commerce retailing continues to grow year-over-year for holiday sales, Chair Hoehn-Saric is urging caution when turning to online retail outlets.

“Consumers expect the products they purchase online to be as safe as those they buy in brick-and-mortar stores,” Chair Hoehn-Saric said. “While this is true when buying online directly from a manufacturer, purchasing from an online marketplace that services other sellers raises additional risks. Consumers need to educate themselves not only about what they buy, but where and from whom. It’s important not to sacrifice safety.”

CPSC, in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), seized more than 1.1 million dangerous or illegal toys in fiscal year 2023. Of those, nearly 101,000 toy seizures were lead related.

  • Follow age guidance and other safety information on toy packaging and choose toys that match each child's interests and abilities.
  • Get safety gear, including helmets, for scooters and other riding toys–and make sure that children use them every time.
  • Keep small balls and toys with small parts away from children younger than age 3 and keep deflated balloons away from children younger than age 8.
  • Once the gifts are open, immediately discard plastic wrappings or other packaging on toys before they become dangerous playthings.

Cooking is the leading cause of residential fires, according to CPSC’s report on Residential Fire and Loss Estimates . Of the 360,800 home fires every year, cooking fires account for nearly half of these. Thanksgiving Day is the peak day for cooking fires, with an average of 1,600 cooking fires occurring on this day – more than three times the daily average of cooking fires. CPSC data also shows that Black Americans have the highest rate of deaths from fire, nearly twice the overall rate across the population.

  • Never leave cooking food unattended on the stove or in the oven.
  • Only fry a turkey outside and away from your home or other flammable materials. Never use turkey fryers in an enclosed area like the garage or on the porch.

Holiday Decorations:

On average, there are about 160 Christmas decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season, with over 40% of the incidents involving falls. In the 2022 holiday season (Nov. 1, 2021 - Jan.31, 2022), about 14,800 people were treated in hospital emergency departments due to holiday decorating-related injuries.

  • Make sure your live Christmas tree has plenty of water and look for the “Fire Resistant” label when buying an artificial tree.
  • Never leave candles unattended. Place burning candles in sight, away from flammable items, and blow or snuff them out before leaving the room. Use flameless candles whenever possible.
  • Never string together more than three sets of incandescent lights, and never overload electrical outlets.

Download our  Holiday Safety video , poster and b-roll that simulate the serious risks posed by using a turkey fryer too close to the home, a dry Christmas tree, and burning candles near flammable items.

Tips for Driving Safely During the Holiday Season

Image of an automobile on an icey road

In the United States, motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for people age 1‒54, 1 and about 36,100 people were killed in crashes in 2019. 2 Early estimates indicate that crash deaths increased to 38,680 in 2020—a 7% increase in deaths, despite people driving less. 3

Motor vehicle crash deaths and injuries can be prevented. Always buckle up, drive at safe speeds, and never drive impaired to help everyone stay safe on the road during the holiday season.

Learn safety tips for:

  • All drivers
  • Child passengers
  • Teen drivers
  • Older adult drivers
  • Do not drive when you are impaired by alcohol and/or drugs, and do not allow your family members or friends to drive while impaired. In 2019, alcohol-impaired driving contributed to more than 10,100 crash deaths. 4 Impairment by any type of legal or illicit drug—not just alcohol—can increase crash risk. If you drink alcohol and/or use drugs, designate a sober driver, call a taxi, or use a ride share service to protect yourself and others on the road.
  • Avoid distractions while driving, such as using your cell phone to text, email, or access social media. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for at least five seconds. At 55 miles per hour, that is like driving the length of an entire football field  with your eyes closed. Safe driving requires your full attention.
  • Check the weather conditions before you head out on the road. Make sure to drive at a speed that is safe for road and weather conditions.

Discover steps older adults  can take to stay safe on the roads.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children, 1  but you can make a difference by making sure kids are always properly buckled. Protect yourself and your children and keep the holiday season injury free.

  • Buckle children in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats, and seat belts , which reduce the risk for serious injuries or death in a car crash by up to 80 percent.
  • Children are safest when car seats and booster seats are used correctly. Buckle children the right way in the right seat and learn how to avoid the most common mistakes .
  • Instead, properly buckle the harness first, then place a coat or blanket over the buckled child. This will not interfere with the harness and will still keep the child warm. For more information, you can visit the Winter Car Seat Safety Tips webpage on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) website for parents.
  • Remember that children age 12 and younger should be properly buckled in the back seat of the vehicle.
  • Set a good example by always using a seat belt yourself.

If you have a teen driver in your family, take advantage of CDC’s safe teen driving resources .

  • Did you know the leading causes of teen crashes and injuries  include driver inexperience, driving with teen passengers, nighttime driving, and not using seat belts?
  • Discuss the rules of the road with your teen. Consider creating a Parent-Teen Driving Agreement  that puts the rules in writing so that limits and expectations are clear.
  • Know your state’s laws . All states have graduated driver licensing (GDL) systems, which help ensure teens can build driving skills under lower-risk conditions.
  • Get in supervised driving time with your teen over the holidays while they are not in school. Practicing driving under your supervision in different kinds of weather is helpful for providing your teen with valuable driving experience in varied conditions (when the weather is not too severe or dangerous).
  • Require your teen to buckle up in every seating position and on every trip. Set a good example by doing the same. Using seat belts  can reduce the risk of death or serious injury in a crash by about half. 5

Driving helps older adults stay mobile and independent. However, the risk of being injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash increases as people age . Thankfully, if you are an older driver, there are steps you can take to stay safe on the road.

  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines—both prescription and over-the-counter—to reduce side effects and interactions that could affect your ability to drive safely .
  • Have your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year. Wear glasses and corrective lenses as directed.
  • Plan your route before you drive.
  • Find the safest route with well-lit streets, intersections with left-turn signals, and easy parking.
  • Download and use CDC’s MyMobility Plan  for more tips and resources about how to make a plan to stay mobile and independent as you age. Take action now to prevent or reduce the effects of possible mobility changes.
