A Super Fun Bar Harbor Cruise Port Itinerary (On Your Own)

During our unforgettable Canada and New England vacation, my friend Angie and I sailed into the breathtaking port of Bar Harbor, Maine, aboard a Holland America cruise. As our last stop, we couldn’t wait to explore all this charming destination had to offer— from exploring picturesque Acadia National Park to catching glimpses of celebrity homes. We crafted a meticulously planned itinerary that perfectly suited our desires. Here is the Bar Harbor cruise port itinerary we created that left us with perfect Maine memories.

First, Rent a Car

As we had arranged in advance, Angie and I were promptly picked up at the port by Enterprise rental cars. After a 30-minute drive, we arrived at the airport and collected our vehicle.

Although reaching our destination and completing the necessary paperwork took some time, the rental price was reasonable, and we were pleased to have control over our day’s itinerary.

With excellent fuel efficiency, the car proved cost-effective, resulting in a total price of $140, including refueling and the rental itself. While the roads were easily navigable, cellular service was intermittent in certain areas.

Seal Harbor

Located just 30 minutes from the Bar Harbor cruise port, we decided to take the scenic route toward Acadia National Park and explore the highly recommended areas. One such area is Seal Harbor, renowned for its stunning mansions and celebrity residences, including Martha Stewart .

Navigating through the winding roads of these charming neighborhoods can be a challenge when trying to find specific addresses of the homes you wish to see. Nonetheless, we strolled along, marveling at the magnificent multi-million dollar properties that dotted the landscape.

rowboats

Venturing out to MDI (Mount Desert Island) is an absolute delight, as it is home to Bar Harbor and a cluster of upscale Maine towns. These towns are favored summer destinations for affluent socialites and boast impressive art galleries, exquisite dining options, and unique accommodation.

The charming city of Ellsworth, nestled on the way to Acadia National Park, offers a picturesque gateway filled with delightful attractions. There is plenty to enjoy, from museums to birding hotspots and the captivating Timber Tina’s  Great Maine Lumberjack Show  that runs throughout the summer. Take advantage of the incredible telephone museum, an intriguing dive into our communication history.

great-maine-lumberjack-show

Among the charming towns, my favorite is  Northeast Harbor , reminiscent of serene hamlets in upstate New York. Its quaint village shops, captivating eateries, and an air of sophistication make it a playground for the affluent, including notable homeowners like the Rockefeller’s.

While exploring, visit Main Street Mercantile, a must-see shop brimming with souvenirs, glassware, household items, and delightful baby gifts. It’s truly a joy to uncover the hidden treasures of these enchanting small towns at your own pace.

Lunch at Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound

Angie and I share a love for food, and we were thrilled to indulge in some delectable fresh Maine lobster. I’m confident that you’ll feel the same way. After receiving a local recommendation, we eagerly went to  Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound . This charming restaurant has been serving customers since 1956.

Here, you’ll discover some of the finest lobsters in the world, sourced from Mount Desert Island and sold within hours of being caught. It doesn’t get much fresher than that!

trenton-bridge-lobster-pound

For our meal, we both opted for a Lobster Roll accompanied by sides of coleslaw and potato salad. The rolls were perfectly crispy on the outside and delightfully soft on the inside. What’s more, the rolls were generously filled with juicy lobster meat. A side of melted butter provided the ideal complement for dipping our lobster rolls, resulting in a truly divine bite.

Visit Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park, commonly known as the Crown Jewel of the North Atlantic Coast, is the premier attraction in Bar Harbor. It is easily one of the key reasons the cruise ships tend to visit here on their  Canada and New England itineraries . Our  Holland America ship  featured some fantastic Acadia National Park trips, but we wanted to see several other things in the area, hence curating our own itinerary.

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of this massive park, spanning across half of Mount Desert Island. Begin your exploration by traversing Park Loop Road’s winding 27 miles, where scenic overlooks and captivating photo opportunities await at every turnout.

Marvel at the breathtaking views the oceanside cliffs offer, granting you a splendid vantage point of the park’s pristine beauty. Encounter the serene beach setting of Thunder Hole and Sand Beach, starkly contrasting the lush, tree-covered mountains. The rhythmic force of the surf lapping against the rocky shore will surely mesmerize.

acadia-national-park-overlook

During our visit to Acadia National Park , we unfortunately couldn’t find the time to explore the renowned Jordan Pond House and its scenic trail or indulge in the famous popover restaurant. Instead, we decided to head to Frenchman Bay, where we captured breathtaking photos of the stunning beachfront and the majestic mountains in the background.

Keep an eye out for the picturesque Porcupine Islands, the charming mounds of land rising from the shimmering waters of Frenchman Bay .

Cadillac Mountain

The pinnacle of Acadia National Park awaits at Cadillac Mountain, its granite-topped peak towering at an elevation of 1532 feet. As the highest mountain along the North Atlantic seaboard, this awe-inspiring summit treats visitors to a panoramic 360-degree vista overlooking Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, and the Cranberry Isles.

A close second in terms of natural beauty lies within Jordan Pond, an exquisite area framed by the majestic Penobscot Mountain and the iconic “The Bubbles.”

Watch for the wild blueberries that flourish in the area, adding a delightful touch to your journey. While witnessing the nation’s first sunrise may prove unlikely for cruising enthusiasts, Cadillac Mountain proudly holds this title. Trust me when I say the pictures depicting this remarkable spectacle are nothing short of magnificent.

Bass Harbor Head Light

Visiting Bass Harbor Head Light is a must for those passionate about lighthouses. Perched on the rugged granite shoreline of MDI, this historic beacon, dating back to 1855, stands as one of the most photographed lighthouses along the Eastern Seaboard.

While visitors can explore the impressive grounds, please note that the lighthouse is privately owned and not open for public entry.

Shop for Souvenirs in Bar Harbor

Downtown Bar Harbor, steps away from the cruise port, is the ultimate destination for all your souvenir needs. From unique and cheesy mementos to adorable and fantastic treasures, you’ll find practically every type of souvenir here. Spend your day leisurely browsing through the relaxed and fun offerings in this port.

Don’t miss out on visiting two must-see stores:  Cool as a Moose  and Fair Trade Winds. These stores are packed with goodies that will leave you spoiled for choice.

If you’re a jewelry enthusiast like myself, you’ll be thrilled to know that Maine is the source of the elusive watermelon tourmaline. The pieces available here are stunning. Additionally, upscale food products such as jams, jellies, sauces , syrups, and more are perfect for taking home as souvenirs.

flowers-bar-harbor-cruise-port

No trip to this region of Maine would be complete without indulging in the flavors of blueberry. We highly recommend trying the blueberry soft-serve ice cream cone from CJ’s Big Dipper. Heavens to Betsy, it’s truly phenomenal!

As you stroll along the pedestrian-clad sidewalks and explore the immaculate stores, galleries, and wineries, it becomes evident why Bar Harbor has remained a beloved New England summer retreat for over a century.

Bar Harbor: A Visit to Remember

Upon completing our day tour, we returned the car to the airport. Angie and I were then chauffeured back to Bar Harbor, allowing us to explore the area near our cruise ship at our leisure. Opting for self-guided exploration in Bar Harbor proved to be an excellent decision. We avoided waiting for large groups to embark and disembark from buses, skipped unwanted destinations, and were not bound by rigid itineraries.

Planning your trip should be smooth. We hope that these recommended suggestions for the Bar Harbor cruise port mentioned above will enhance your experience in this remarkable destination.

What to do in Bar Harbor on a Canada and New England Cruise

By late afternoon, our Holland America Canada and New England cruise departed from rainy Boston. Bar Harbor, Maine was the first cruise port on this itinerary.

This very-New England town is famous for its salt water taffy, blueberry pie plus lobster and other seafood, of course.

Holland America Maasdam leaving Cruiseport Boston

As night fell, a thick shroud of fog and mist enveloped the ship. Then a northeast breeze picked up speed. The seas became rough. Or at least rough by the standards of many first time cruisers.

To paraphrase the Christmas poem, “…The barf bags were hung by the railings with care, in hopes that the passengers knew they were there.” Seriously, it was that rough.

I was fine and enjoyed my first dinner in the somewhat empty dining room.

Bar Harbor Maine Cruise Port

By morning, though the sun wasn’t shining, at least the ocean had calmed. Our ship was too large to dock, so at dawn the Maasdam’s anchor was dropped. Shortly after breakfast the tenders would begin to take passengers into downtown Bar Harbor cruise port. More like a small dock, it was a convenient place to begin a day of walking. And eating.

Not everyone chose to go ashore or if they did, many decided not to take a Holland America Bar Harbor shore excursion. The weather was too blustery to enjoy scenic rides into the countryside. All I wanted to do was spend the day getting to know this sleepy, seasonal town, with a rain parka and umbrella.

In the lifeboat to get to Bar Harbor Maine

Because Bar Harbor is a tender port, we boarded a lifeboat for a bouncy ten minute ride to the dock. Captain Ane Smit positioned the ship in such a way that stepping into the lifeboat was as easy as in the Caribbean.

Once our lifeboat was full, off we went, bumping through the waves til we reached the pier.

Things to do in Charming Bar Harbor

This was my first time here and my goal was (as it always seems to be on a Canada New England cruise) to find the best seafood chowder and lobster roll. No shore excursions for me in Bar Harbor.

Downtown Bar Harbor

There was that constant drizzle which at times, due to the wind, blew horizontal. Most people signed up for a tour to/around Acadia National Park, hopefully a view of Cadillac Mountain and eat and learn about lobster. I’d do this shore excursion on my next visit.

Explore Downtown Bar Harbor

Off I went to explore the downtown, only steps from the dock. Bar Harbor is a small summer tourist town on Mount Desert Island. Laid out grid-like, it’s very easy to explore on foot.

There are plenty of things to do in Bar Harbor when it rains. With umbrella in tow and camera tucked into my bag, I wandered up one street and down the next, making a mental note of where I wanted to return to after lunch.

Then I spotted a familiar store; Del Sol, which sells sun-sensitive color-changing clothes. What it was doing that far from the Caribbean was anyone’s guess. But I wandered in and started a conversation with a couple of the shop girls.

Turned out one of them lives about an hour from my home in Florida, and works in Bar Harbor during her college summer breaks. She would be perfect to glean information from for my seafood chowder quest.

She suggested that I should head to the Thirsty Whale for lunch. Then the Opera House Internet Cafe across the street for wifi. Done.

Lobster roll and seafood chowder at Thirsty Whale

Lunch was excellent, the atmosphere at the Thirsty Whale was more locals than tourists, at least for a while. I loved the bowl of thick, rich seafood chowder and a perfectly chilled lobster roll.

The Thirsty Whale was a winner.

Bar Harbor Opera House Internet Cafe

Dodging raindrops, I splashed over to the Opera House internet cafe across the street and into what was probably the more unique internet cafe ever. More like a rustic cabin in the mountains somewhere.

All I really needed to do was do a few things on my iPhone over wifi to save data charges. I bought a hot mint tea, sat down and worked on my phone while listening to all sorts of locals’ conversations. Sort of felt like Aunt Bea would walk in any minute asking for Andy.

Ben and Bills Chocolate Emporium Bar Harbor

The rain had stopped (but not for long) so I retraced my steps to Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium to pick up a box of assorted chocolates for the front desk staff on the Maasdam. That’s something I do on every cruise.

Once inside the store, I couldn’t pass up a box of authentic Bar Harbor salt water taffy for my kids and a couple of dark chocolate-covered pretzels for me.

Back to the Cruise Port

Keep in mind that this really isn’t your typical cruise ship port. With wood pilings and gangway, it’s also a dock used by locals and their sailing boats.

With an early 2:30pm all-aboard time, it was soon time to head back to the cruise port without time to spare. Apparently the rain decided that we weren’t already wet enough so right when the last hundred of us were queuing up for the tender back to the ship, it began to pour in buckets.

Luckily, there was awning-like  covering near the gangway to the boat, so most of the already-soaked people quickly scooted under the canopy. I went into the little bakery right there at the port.

Along with seven other cruise guests, I ordered a slice of home-baked Maine blueberry pie and a coffee. Not a bad alternative to standing in the cold and rain. I guess the rest of those waiting for the tender didn’t want to spend a few dollars for warmth, food and conversation.

I made it back to the ship with plenty of time for a hot shower and a nap before getting ready for formal night. This was another sailaway event that would be better viewed from indoors. The sailaway from Bar Harbor was a weather repeat from Boston.

On Board Holland America Maasdam

Pinnacle Grill on the Maasdam

I don’t pack any glitzy long dresses anymore and no one else seems to do so either. My trusty plain black cocktail dress works fine every time. Throw on a fancy scarf or pashmina and it’s a new outfit.

Dinner tonight would be in the Pinnacle Grill specialty restaurant and I was looking forward to a superb meal.

Dungeness crab cakes at the Pinnacle Grill on the Maasdam

I wasn’t disappointed. Starting with the amuse bouche – a little expresso cup filled with a steaming mushroom “cappuccino,” – and segueing into the warm Dungeness Crab Cakes with duck sauce and spicy mayo, we were off to a running start. I’d take one of each course on the menu.

Next was the Arugula Salad with chopped egg and cherry tomatoes which led to the spicy chicken and coconut milk soup with lemongrass. OK…so I veered a bit off course with my vegetarian habits, but it was only soup, right?

Baked Alaska in Pinnacle Grill

My main entree put me back on the wagon with two handmade vegetable skewers of tofu, squash, zucchini, red onion and mushrooms, flamed at table-side with vodka and brandy. Amazingly good and a nice mini-show, too. Not to go unnoticed, I was offered to sample the black cod with shrimp scampi. Went nicely with the vodka-veggies. Dessert, of course, was an individual Baked Alaska.

Showroom at Sea aboard the Maasdam

By the time I was finished in the Pinnacle Grill, it was only a matter of minutes until showtime in the Showroom at Sea for Mackie’s Broadway gala production. Note to self: arrive earlier than one minute to curtain time to get a seat. This was one of two major shows this week and there wasn’t an empty seat anywhere. I stood along the back, resting against the wall for most of the show. It was that good.

First towel animal of the cruise

Goodnight from the Maasdam. Tomorrow would be Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the Canadian Maritimes, an island kind of hanging out there in the North Atlantic. Weather reports predicted more of the same. Good thing I packed a lightweight coat with plenty of room for layers. And gloves.

Hi Carol, Thank you! Yes, I have articles on Canada ports too. Here’s my recommendation for Halifax: https://cruisemaven.com/eight-hours-in-halifax-nova-scotia/ Have a wonderful cruise. This is one of my favorite itineraries! Sherry

Thanks for the insight. I’m going on NCL cruise this month, stopping in Bar Harbor, Portland, Bay of Fundy and Halifax. Your post is very informative about the Maine stops. Did you stop at these places in Canada? Any info on them?

Hi Alexander,

The food in New England is fabulous! Enjoy!

We’ll have to try some next time were there!

I totally agree! The seafood chowder was fantastic, too.

Bar Harbor is truly a one of a kind city! That seafood chowder looks incredible.

Hi Ken, It’s really hilarious to see it. Glad you had a wonderful cruise! Sherry

I love the picture of the restaurant with the taxi above. We were there and I have a picture at the restaurant steps. The Maasdam was great!

Thanks for reading the article. The Maasdam, in my opinion, is a very very nice ship. Enjoy the cruise!

Thanks for sharing! I’ll be doing this exact itinerary next month and while I’m a bit hesitant for the size and age of the Maasdam, I’m still very much excited for the cruise!

For those who want to explore beyond Bar Harbor itself, consider taking a bus tour to see more of Acadia National Park or visit nearby towns like Northeast Harbor or Southwest Harbor.

While exploring Bar Harbor, make sure to try some fresh seafood dishes like lobster rolls or clam chowder from one of the many local restaurants. And don’t forget to save time for shopping! What our guests are saying

We took the Acadia National Park tour on a Cruise stop in Bar Harbor. I am thankful that we had reservations because it was sold out by reservation only! That says a lot for a tour. The bus driver (Santos) was very knowledgeable and we had a wonderful time. The views are spectacular from Cadillac Mountain and Santos gave us a ton of information about the area. I recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Bar Harbor.

This was a great tour! We learned a lot and got to see as many park highlights as possible in the short time we had. We went to the top of Cadillac Mountain, the Nature Center and wildflower garden, and Thunder Hole. It's such an amazing place and I can't wait to go back.

This was a very comfortable tour with an excellent guide. We got to see the countryside, make some short (but just long enough) stops and even visit with some locals. The bus leaves from the center of town which is very convenient and it was fun to walk around Bar Harbor. And the price was worth every penny.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and the bus stopped enough times to get the great fall leaves shots we were after. If you get back on the bus in good time, you'll have more time to see the sites down the road. If not, some of the spots will be cut short. Our times were adequate. The price for the tour was very reasonable and the driver was great.

Grady M

Since we traveled a long distance to spend a week in the area, we wanted a guided tour to help us get the lay of the land to help us maximize our time. This tour certainly filled the bill. Our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining, mingling local stories with history, interspersed with some terrible jokes that kept us groaning and laughing. I highly recommend it.

Lori M

My husband and I were delighted to stumble upon this bus tour in Bar Harbor, that took us all the way to the top of Mt. Cadillac. Bus driver/tour guide Heather painted a colorful picture of life in Bar Harbor through her stories, jokes, and in-depth knowledge of the area, its history, and environment. And she gave us a discount coupon to Testa’s, where I had a tasty lobster roll (with garlic butter)!

Wayne H

Amazing tour of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The Female tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the island and the park. She made it a 10 Star tour!

ChuckBrooks

This tour covers the entire National Park Tour Loop including Cadillac Mountain. The tour guide was very good. There was plenty of time at the stops. Be sure to reserve your tour online as it often sells out, especially when there are cruise ships in port. When we got our tickets the ticket agent gave us a coupon for Testa's Restaurant and we had an excellent lunch there. This tour is a very good value.

Greengirl87

We enjoyed this tour on our first full day and glad we did. We learned many things about the park we wouldn’t have found out otherwise. Our guide was funny and tailored the trip to our group. You will see the highlights of the park and get some great ideas on where you want to return to explore later. We thought it was worth the money.

Bar Harbor cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-05-02 14:51

Port Bar Harbor cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bar Harbor, Maine. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Bar Harbor is a port town on Mount Desert Island (Hancock County, Maine USA), with a population of around 5,000. It is a very popular tourist destination in Maine's Down East region.

Since January 2024, Bar Harbor Port (locode USBHB) has limited cruise shipping to 1000 daily disembarking tourists (passengers and crew), which is a substantial reduction from the previous 3000 daily visitors to the cruise port.

It is estimated that cruise tourists contribute USD 20+ million annually to Maine State's economy. Before the cruise shipping industry's pause (since mid-March 2020), the port expected nearly 200 ship calls and 300,000+ passengers. However, the entire 2020 season was eventually canceled. By mid-November 2020, Bar Harbor ME had booked 150+ cruise ship dockings (scheduled port calls) for season 2021.

Regularly scheduled ferries connect to Canada ( Yarmouth Nova Scotia ), with crossing time 3,5 hours.

In 2016, the port handled 105 cruise ship calls and around 169,000 passengers. During season 2016, cruise tourists spent at Bar Harbor around USD 15 million, with total economic impact USD 20,2M (based on a University of Maine study). To these figures must be added passenger fees (USD 0,7M) paid to the city. Also additional is spending by crew and cruise companies themselves. The study team handed out surveys to cruise passengers arriving at Harbor Place or Harborside Dock. Tourists returned 2231 surveys by mail (47% response rate). According to the study, 138,285 passengers disembarked in the cruise port in 2016. This was 87% of vessels' combined passenger capacity (163,000 pax). Note: passenger fees are based on the ship's capacity. The study also showed that in 2016, around 2 million tourists visited Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, of which cruisers were around 10%.

During season 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 171 ship calls (40% increase over 2016) and over 225,000 passengers.

On November 17, 2020, Bar Harbor Town Council discussed the popular policy (for smaller seaports in the USA) to limit the annual number of ships due to the ongoing concerns over the COVID crisis. In November 2022, via voting (1780 vs 1273) was placed a daily limit of 1000 cruise tourists, effective January 2024. A fine of US$100 per person is imposed on the company/operator for every disembarking passenger over the daily limit.

The small town is nationwide famous for its MDI Biological Laboratory (1898-founded independent nonprofit biomedical research facility), The Jackson Laboratory (JAX - large research facility specializing in mammalian genetics, nonprofit with over 2100 employees), College of the Atlantic (COA - private liberal-arts college).

However, Bar Harbor is best known for Acadia National Park/NP, which includes ~1/2 of Mount Desert Island (Cadillac Mountain) plus adjacent smaller isles. The town is served by Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (in Trenton ME), located approx 15 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown Bar Harbor. The county-owned airport serves regularly scheduled domestic flights (carriers Elite Airways, Peninsula Airways, Cape Air, PenAir) connecting to Boston MA, Newark NJ, and Vero Beach FL.

In close proximity to downtown, Acadia NP offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, trekking, biking, mountain climbing, bird watching. Tourists interested in the island's marine life can visit the yacht marina (at the end of Main Street) and sign up for boat tours for wildlife viewing (puffins, whales, seals, lobster, pelagic seabirds) or harbor cruises.

Bar Harbor cruise terminal

Bar Harbor ME is a tender cruise port, which means cruise liners anchor in Frenchman Bay and their passengers are transported to the pier via the ship's tender boats.

After the ship drops anchor, cruise passengers are ferried back and forth to one of the port's 2 piers/docks in downtown (at 121 Eden Street). From there, they can connect (with trolleys and buses) to local attractions, including Acadia National Park.

(NEW) Bar Harbor cruise terminal "Marine Atlantic"

As tendering passengers increase cruise companies' costs, there is a plan for the conversion of the old ferry terminal (on Eden Street) to a combined ferry -cruise terminal facility.

The town voted on June 13, 2017 (Article 12) to re-zone the old ferry terminal. Following the vote (945 to 658), the town purchased the state-owned Marine Atlantic property (former ferry terminal) from the Maine Department of Transportation. This facility served two Bay Ferries ships (The Cat, The Bluenose) connecting Bar Harbor with Nova Scotia Canada ( Yarmouth ).

  • In February 2019 was signed a 5-year lease deal (thru 2024) with annual rent CAD 264,000.
  • By the lease agreement, Bay Ferries started a major terminal renovation project that includes demolition and rebuilding of Customs Plaza, as well as a renovation of outbuildings and portions of the terminal building's interior.
  • Customs Plaza's renovation also includes installing new equipment (required by US Customs and Border Protection), repairs to the existing docking pier, installing a new fixed bridge section (adjacent to the pier), transfer of the floating ferry ramp from Portland to Bar Harbor.
  • Nova Scotia contributed to the cost of the ferry terminal's border services. Since the Maine-Nova Scotia ferry service was resumed (2015-2018), the NS government spent CAD 32 million in subsidies.

Article 12's zoning change allows cruise (and other) vessels to dock at the ferry terminal. Several lawsuits (filed by locals) were against this port development project. As of 2019, Ferry Terminal Visioning Committee has approved the state-owned property to be used as a multi-use terminal. The current deal includes a 5-year lease for the CAT ferry providing daily connections Bar Harbor-Yarmouth. Other terminal uses could include a possible yacht marina, boat storage, overflow parking (for tourists), cruise ship tendering.

The town has a webpage dedicated to materials developed by consultants and the local committee process. More information can be found at barharbormaine.gov/393/Ferry-Terminal. Anyone interested in this issue could follow port developments on the website.

In early-July 2020, due to the progressing in the USA COVID pandemic, Bar Harbor decided to close its seaports to cruise ships for the remainder of 2020. On July 7, town councilors voted to ban cruise ships after ACL-American Cruise Lines announced its plan to resume coastal voyages with some itineraries visiting several Maine coast towns.

In early-August 2021, the Town Council voted unanimously for the 65-year-old ferry terminal to be demolished, once there's money and a plan to replace it with a new facility. Most of the existing infrastructure (including the pier) will be demolished, to fulfill the contract with Bay Ferries. The decision was made following a workshop with the Harbor Committee in July, during which was also suggested building a new Marina (yacht-serving port facility).

  • In late-July, the Canadian company announced plans to restart its fast-catamaran service (THE CAT ship) linking with Canada (Yarmouth) .
  • The 1956-built old ferry terminal was originally designed to serve the Canadian ferryboat MV Bluenose (1977-built/1982-scrapped), so the current layout is obsolete.
  • The current terminal consists of 2 causeways, 2 piers/docks (north and south), 2 vehicle bridges (between both piers), and a dilapidated building.

Ultimate Island Experience Bar Harbor

I asked the following question on "Ports of Call" with no sucess. We are back on the Maasdam in October for the repositioning cruise back to Florida. One of the Holland America excursions offered in Bar Harbor, Maine is the "Ultimate Island Experience Bar Harbor". This tour consist of a tour in a limo, wine tasting and a lunch at supposedly fine restaurant.

This is quite an expensive excursion and before I commit I would like to find out if anyone has done this and was it really worth it.

Someone out there must have done this excursion or it would not be offered. If anyone could provide some details, thoughts, opinions it would be nice. Just trying to secretly plan a special day for DW.

Advance kudos to anyone who can help.

I haven't been on this tour, sorry. However, it really sounds wonderful & would love to do something like this! We went to Bar Harbor 4 years ago and just did a general tour. We are going again in September and haven't planned anything yet.

I say surprise your wife and go for it!

Enjoy your cruise!

Cool Cruiser

No Sea Legs

We are planning on this very excursion on the September 6th sailing from Quebec city to NYC, aboard the Eurodam.

Realize it is expensive, but feel it is a one time only adventure, and having my husband recovering from cancer surgery, if not now...when?

So, very much looking forward to a special treat, I say "Go for it" and do not look back with regrets.:D

Once when we were considering an expense that was really over the top for us...someone told us....If you don't do it, your children will! That pretty much summed it up. Go for it, enjoy the moment, and buy yourself a wonderful memory!

Thank you for the replies. It's not the cost but the question is still directed whether it is a good excursion? I'm questioning if the day would be better if I personally rented the limo and planned the day.

Questions abound? Like how many crammed into a limo? Could I pick a better restaurant? Wine tasting=how good?

We have been to Bar Harbor on road trips and cruises. Beautiful area and state. I was born in Vermont and in my youth; parents would take us to a small cottage around Old Orchard Beach. After traveling to over 75 countries New England and the Maine coast are still favorites.:D

All our cruises seem to go really well because we do a lot of research and planning. Planning is almost as much fun as the event.

I would be a little leary of the fact that they use either a limo or a limo-van. The fact that you are familiar with this part of the world leads me to think that you would be better off renting your own limo and arranging your own lunch, sightseeing, etc. Wine tastings vary greatly...so you're on your own there. Since you enjoy the research, I think you will definately be a candidate for doing this on your own. Enjoy!

Thank you and that is what is taking place....got 3 months & two days.! Whose counting? Still hoping that sooner or later I will find someone who has done this tour before.

In thinking back? I have never found any Holland America booked excursions a disaster. I have been on some I would not recommed but that is/our IMO.

Did you end up with this tour? We're signed up, and wanted some feedback while we could still cancel.

The Royal Caribbean version of this says to "Important Notes: Consider physical fitness and medical history when selecting tour."

Any idea why this is printed for a Mild Activity excursion?

What the heck, we did this and posted this in 2009, I have no clue what is being asked or is occurring or available in 2014.

We did enjoy this excursion.

All our Canada/NE cruises and all our stops in Bar Harbor, I never heard anyone who took this tour. I wish I could help but if you DO take it, please come back and tell us about it. It sounds intriguing. I'd love to know which restaurant.

I don't recall it ever being listed for a tour on the cruises I've been on.

It is a surprise when it resurrects a post you made in 2009! We had a limo van with driver in tux and than did the Circle Acadia tour topped off with a fresh live lobster dinner at one of the famous Bar Harbor Hotels.

We spent 2-3 weeks in the Bar Harbor area every summer until a couple of years ago when we decided to start cruising. This could be a very interesting excursion, except: in 2009 (or even in 2012, or last year up there) I don't recall seeing any vehicles on Mount Desert Island that I would call "limos;" and while there are indeed some fine restaurants in Bar Harbor there are also many that are more Carnival than HAL, if you get my drift. You could probably do much better DYI.

For fine dining, I would recommend Poor Boy's Gourmet [the best Maine lobster available many ways -- Lobster Poor Boy is our favorite (meat out of the shell, drenched in cream and sherry)] or Havana [very fine dining but not Maine themed].

:o I fell into the trap again. :D

I didn't notice the date of the initial post.

Wasn't a regular limo. It was an exclusive van limo. It was a Holland America offered excursion and after a hard volunteer day I'm headed for bed.

I saw the original date on this thread which got me curious as to what was going on.

I don't remember any tour offered like that when we were in Bar Harbor.

For me a van is difficult to get into. But I do like the idea that it is with a small group and more personal.

Do come back and let us know if you take this tour and what you thought of it.

  • 1 year later...

Nice lunch. Limo was disappointing. Windows only on one side facing the cliff. Had to scramble over the back seats to get to the inner seats. Only two doors in back. Three handicapped passengers. Never occurred to me that their vehicle would be the reason for the moderate a activity label. Several nice long stops for photo enthusiasts.

Hello Trip Advisors!

Oli's Trolley 2.5 hr. tour of Arcadia National Park seems very popular, as well as LuLu's Lobester boat tour. You can do the Lobester boat at 10 am, followed by 2 hrs for some shopping and/or lunch, then take the Oli's Trolley Arcadia National Park tour. That's what I plan to do.

holland america bar harbor excursions

First of all, it is Acadia not Arcadia. Just a pet peeve. Arcadia makes it sound like an arcade which it is not.

You could walk around town, visit the Abbe Museum and stuff like that. But to visit Bar Harbor and not visit Acadia would be a crime.

So whether you go with a planned tour from the cruise or an independent one like Oli's, get into Acadia.

Acadia, check! Thanks for the suggestions, I will look into these tips, for sure.

Took the Ollie's Trolley tour...well worth it. Although it rained most of the day, the foliage in Acadia park was still stunning. Finished with lobster lunch at the Grandview (our first choice had a long wait), and the blueberry pie was off the hook!

New ‘Dutch Day’ on Every Cruise Celebrates Holland America Line’s Heritage with Themed Culinary Experiences

Daelmans Stroopwafel partnership offers a variety of sweet treats, while new special menus and the Orange Party highlight Holland America Line’s rich Dutch history

Seattle, Wash., April 26, 2024 — Holland America Line is introducing a new “Dutch Day” experience that celebrates the cruise line’s more than 150-year-history that began in the Netherlands. Whether sailing in Alaska, Europe, Asia or the Caribbean, many Dutch culinary favorites will be featured on board for the special day.

The centerpiece of Dutch Day will be a themed Dutch Dinner served once per cruise in the main Dining Room, with many of the dishes also offered in the casual Lido Market. Additionally, Holland America Line's popular Orange Party will be held on Dutch Day, and guests can enjoy fresh-made poffertjes in Crow’s Nest Café.  A new partnership with Daelmans Stroopwafel includes delectable desserts featuring the Dutch staple and a Daelmans Stroopwafel turn-down pillow treat in every stateroom.

“Holland America Line remains deeply connected to our roots in the Netherlands, and Dutch Day is the perfect way to honor our history through experiences that celebrate the culinary culture of the country,” said Michael Stendebach, vice president of food, beverage and rooms division for Holland America Line. “Our guests appreciate special touches like Daelmans Stroopwafel for turn down or a dish in the dining room that is distinctly Dutch, and we’re excited to expand the cultural experience for an entire day to showcase more of our heritage.”

Culinary traditions run deep in the Netherlands, and the special themed Dutch Dinner in the Dining Room features an extensive menu that includes both classic and contemporary Dutch delicacies. The selection of starters features a Bay Shrimp Cocktail with Dutch cocktail sauce, Erwten Soep (Dutch Pea Soup), and Mushroom Cream puff pastry with hollandaise sauce.

Dutch-inspired main course selections include Bami Goreng, a stir-fried noodle dish with chicken sate and peanut sauce; Pan-Fried Dover Sole with lemon butter; and Hodge Podge Klapstuk with chateau potatoes. For dessert, a Bosche Bol (large, chocolate covered cream puff), Tompouce (Dutch mille-feuille pastry) or a slice of traditional Dutch Apple Pie provide the perfect sweet ending to the meal.

In collaboration with Daelmans Stroopwafels — a family-owned bakery founded in the Netherlands in 1904, renowned for its authentic recipe —Dutch Day will feature Stroopwafel Cheesecake for dessert on the dinner menu in the Dining Room and Lido Market and a Stroopwafel Napoleon at tea time. Select bars will serve a Stroopwafel Liqueur with hints of cinnamon and caramel only on ships in Europe. Additionally, in place of the traditional stateroom turn-down chocolate, guests will find a Daelmans Stroopwafel waiting for them on their pillow.

New in Crow’s Nest Café on all ships, fresh-made poffertjes — a traditional Dutch treat resembling small, fluffy pancakes — will be available daily (not just on Dutch Day) for a nominal charge.

Popular Orange Party Held on Dutch Day

Once per cruise, Holland America Line holds the Orange Party with live music, cocktails and treats, and now it will be held on Dutch Day. The Orange Party pays homage to the company’s Dutch heritage (orange is the color of the Dutch Royal Family, which hails from the House of Orange), and guests are invited to wear orange attire and accessories. During the after-dinner festivities, special orange-themed cocktails are available while servers pass around finger-foods and sweets.

Dutch Day is part of Holland America Line’s programming that offers authentic experiences to immerse guests in the culture, history and traditions of the places visited on each cruise.
