Inside Celebrity Tour Buses: The Modifications Stars Make to their Mobile Homes

Who isn’t fascinated by celebrity homes? We love seeing the outrageous additions that adorn the mansions of the rich and famous. Couches worth tens of thousands of dollars, gourmet kitchens, and master bedrooms fit for royalty aren’t uncommon inside the homes of our favorite stars.

Not surprisingly, their mobile homes are no different.

For entertainers such as supermodels, singers, and even pro golfers, touring is what pulls in the most cash— a band can take home 35% of one night’s ticket sales plus up to 50% of the merchandise profits over one tour. Tirelessly entertaining dedicated fans from  New York to Chicago to Los Angeles  and every city in between, these celebrities may play up to 180 gigs in one year. When work requires such lengthy stretches of traveling on the road, comfortable mobile living space is a necessity.

While it seems a bit odd at first— why not just fly from one venue to another and save the time difference?— touring with a bus really is the most cost-effective and certainly the most convenient way to move a team around. These modified tour buses take away the stress of living out of a suitcase and provide celebrities with a “home base” where they can relax, unwind, and store all of their things in one consistent spot between appearances. It isn’t just a bus— it’s an office, a bedroom, a living room, a storage area, and a communal area to bond with your band and team, all in one big box on wheels.

Between living rooms, full bedrooms, and full bathrooms, celebrities work closely with companies that specialize in modifying tour buses to make them as homely and as comfortable as possible. These celebrities also tend to put a unique “touch” on their buses, some “touches” more outrageous than others. From leather couches to over-the-top back lounges, state-of-the-art kitchens, and even upstairs (yes, upstairs) lounges, celebrities certainly know how to get creative when it comes to building a unique “home away from home.”

All buses can be divided into four basic sections: a front lounge, which functions as a living room; a kitchen, or more typically, a “kitchenette;” a bunk area, where the band sleeps; and a back lounge, which is a bit of a “wild card” on these buses.

Keep reading to have a look inside the most extravagant celebrity tour buses we could find!

THE FRONT LOUNGE

A front lounge can usually seat about 10 people. They’re very “homey,” and great for socializing with band members and entourages or hosting friends and family. On either side of the lounge are usually couches, one of which is most likely placed on a “slide—” a mechanism that slides out when the bus is parked, adding up to 60 square feet of space and creating a proper living area.

front lounge of a celebrity tour bus

While some celebrities prefer to keep their lounges simple and sweet— as Kenny Rogers says of his humble wheeled abode, “You buy what you need and you fix it up great!” — others like to beef theirs up a bit with luxury couches, oversized TVs, or high-tech controls.

Tommy Lee’s coach features a cozy front lounge with two leather-upholstered couches costing $25,000 each.

The front lounge may also include some sort of “master control” for the entire bus. John Legend has an iPad connected to his bus’s server for controlling light settings, changing the television and music, and adjusting the air temperature. Stored right in the same server are over 1,000 movies so there’s always something good to watch on the road.

TVs are also a must-have for all front lounges, and you’d better believe they come big— Heidi Klum’s front lounge features a 46-inch screen embedded into the wall. Mariah Carey’s mobile castle features THREE 60-inch TVs plus an extra screen hidden behind her makeup mirror!

Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey ended up having two of our favorite mobile homes— we’ll explain why later.

Also included in many front lounges is a killer sound system that would compete with any typical grounded studio. The Eli Young Band’s bus includes a 12-speaker system that’s used for blasting music through after parties and rocking the bus on the road with their favorite albums. “Loud” is the best way to listen to music, right?

THE KITCHEN

After the lounge area comes the kitchen. On a typical RV, kitchens are almost nonexistent— it is, after all, quite difficult not only to store all of the usual kitchen equipment but also to make room for appliances such as a stove, oven, and microwave, not to mention necessary counter space and cabinets. On top of all of that, who even has time to cook for themselves while they’re busy playing shows? Kitchens simply aren’t a priority on the road for most. The usual mobile kitchen features are a coffee maker, an electric tea kettle, and a mini-fridge.

Kitchen on the bus of a celebrity

John Legend’s bus, however, houses a full stove top, a toaster, a microwave that doubles as a convection oven, and extra cabinet space for preparing gourmet meals in between performances.

Despite limited space, though, alcohol is always a priority. For entertaining an entourage and unwinding after big shows, drinks on-demand are a must-have. Gwen Stefani’s coach includes a wine chiller, always stocked with a wide selection of her favorite blends.

Jake Owen’s kitchen even has a beer tap— every time his band stops in a new city, they will make an agreement to trade show tickets with a local brewery in exchange for a local beer on-tap on the bus.

Ron White’s kitchen features a hidden-away humidor with two sides— one for his cigar stash, and one for his scotch.

Brad Pitt’s mobile kitchen takes the cake. His features all of the amenities of any usual kitchen— the stove, the oven, the microwave, the counter, and the cabinet space— plus a built-in full refrigerator and dishwasher, totaling a cost of $60,000 just for the kitchen— more than double what the average person spends on a kitchen remodel in their house!

Past the usual mobile kitchen, you’ll find the bunks. Sleeping on a bus sounds painfully uncomfortable, right? The way most celebrities do it, it doesn’t have to be. Typically, each bunk features its own mini television, a curtain for privacy, individual controls for air conditioning and lighting, and sometimes memory foam mattresses! The average tour bus bunk is just about the size of a regular twin-size bed.

Lee Brice, however, took it up a notch on his bus with custom oversize bunks, which they call “condo bunks,” that feature all the regular amenities at a slightly larger size for extra comfort.

Many celebrities report that sleeping in mobile bunks isn’t so bad— the movement of the bus has a tendency to rock them to sleep, which is necessary considering the grueling daily schedules they may keep during a tour.

Most buses can accommodate 6-8 bunks, in which everyone can have their defined private space separate from everybody else. You’ll usually see pictures of family, charging outlets, and various other personal belongings inside each bunk.

THE BACK LOUNGE

Back lounges are where we find some of the most unique modifications.

For the most part, celebrities keep the back lounge as their private bed area— everyone needs their own quiet space, right? There’s usually a master bathroom included in the back, too, with a full shower, walk-in closet, and counter space. Tommy Lee’s master bathroom includes a full-size shower with a TV in the wall, and a closet with a fuzzy rail to keep hangers from sliding while the bus is moving.

John Legend’s master suite includes a plush queen-sized bed that slides out just like the couches in the front lounge. Also in his master suite is a 5.1 surround-sound system, with a subwoofer under the bed to make movie-watching in the back even more exciting.

Back lounges are more than just bedrooms, though. Travis Barker’s master bed folds up into the wall with the push of a button, creating the perfect private space for practicing his drums. He’s also made room for not just one, but two bathrooms on his coach, so there’s never any fighting over who’s getting the coveted bathroom space.

Laura Bell Bundy had a dance studio built in her back lounge, complete with a full-length mirror and a ballet bar, allowing her to practice routines between shows.

Ashley Monroe’s back room has been dubbed a “girls-only zone,” where she and her girlfriends can get ready for shows together and stay secluded from the rest of her band.

However, back lounges also have many more specific uses, such as that of Hunter Hayes— situated in the back of his bus is a full recording studio, in which he makes serious progress on all of his current songs. The studio features a mixing station, multiple monitors, and 5.1 surround sound. In it, he’s finished 20-30 demos while on the road.

Our favorite back room, though, belongs to Jeff Dunham— he has a full workshop in the back of his bus where he can not only construct but also repair his puppets while on the road, ensuring that they remain in pristine condition for shows.

Now, if all of this makes you roll your eyes and say, “of course they have all that, they’re celebrities!” Just wait— we aren’t quite finished yet.

Have a look inside these 3 over-the-top celebrity homes. These coaches are so spectacular that we couldn’t even single out our favorite features above!

Supermodel Heidi Klum is the proud owner of what is possibly the “greenest” mobile home on the planet. Her office on wheels is the world’s only 100% solar-powered RV, packed with countless other “green” modifications throughout the interior and exterior.

The designers of this eco-friendly coach took great care in conserving energy in every way possible when constructing Heidi’s mobile workspace. All throughout the RV are energy-efficient LED bulbs, which draw less power and don’t add heat to the coach; and high-grade eco-friendly fabric, covering the floor and upholstery. Located by the living space is a control panel, at which one staff member is tasked with ensuring that the RV runs exclusively off of solar power for as long as possible (in the event of an emergency, the coach can easily be switched to draw power from a generator).

With a floor plan that more closely resembles a luxury hotel room than a motor home, this coach includes a total of 320 square feet of living space, including a couch, a loveseat, and a 42-inch TV. Without a bunk area like most other buses, the main living space flows into a spacious kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, a desk made completely out of recycled wood, and a small sink. The back room serves as a makeup area and dressing room, complete with an oversize mirror surrounded by eco-friendly lights, and a professional- grade hair-washing sink.

MARIAH CAREY

how big are tour bus bunks

Just the front lounge and kitchen of Mariah Carey’s mobile mansion cover 600 square feet— bigger than most New York studio apartments! The lounge includes a 15-foot custom couch, a 25-foot slide on one side, and a 30-foot slide on the other. Facing the oversized couch is a 65-inch TV, connected to a 5.1 studio-grade surround-sound system. In the back is a full kitchen with a full stove top, refrigerator, convection oven, and a kangen water machine— a $4000 water ionizer designed to purify tap water by removing alkaline minerals.

Right by the kitchen is Mariah’s makeup station featuring a mirror surrounded by makeup lights, with a TV placed directly behind the surface of the mirror so that Mariah can watch her favorite shows while she’s getting her hair and makeup done.

Fantastic, right? We would expect nothing less from a star of Mariah’s status. But guess what? The top of this bus expands to an entire second story . That’s right— this bus is two stories tall when parked.

The second floor of this skyscraper on wheels is connected to the first by a marble staircase. Upstairs, you’ll find unique lighting with a color wheel, creating the perfect mobile dance club for Mariah and her entourage. Wrapping around the back of the dance floor is a 35-foot rounded couch that can seat up to 30 people, facing two more 60-inch TVs, one placed at either end of the bus.

All of the over-the-top amenities in this luxurious mobile tour home, which includes more than two tons of marble and stone, bring the cost to a staggering $1.8 million.

STEVE ELKINGTON

how big are tour bus bunks

Pro golfer Steve Elkington takes the grand prize for the most insane mobile home modifications. His stunning mobile estate, which he’s nicknamed “The Big Show,” is an astounding 1,130 square feet, spread over two stories just like Mariah Carey’s moving castle. Standing in Steve’s over-the-top estate feels less like being in a bus and more like being in a cozy cottage— the coach is modeled after a golf clubhouse, meant to have that “19th-hole” vibe that all golfers love. Included in this wheeled mansion are a full washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a living room, a pro shop, a shoe rack, and a master suite, all on one massive mobile manor.

The kitchen features a full gas stove, an oven, and high-end appliances, with a restaurant-style booth for dining. The living room features a typical slide on the right side with the couch, adding even more square feet to the home. Just past the living room is Steve’s own putting green and a pro shop, where guests can come in and browse some of his golf gear. Next to the shop is his personal shoe rack and a station for cleaning and polishing his collection of shoes.

Right by the stairs are the full washer and dryer, tucked away in their own closet for when it’s time to take care of a few chores.

The roof lifts 35 feet to reveal a master suite, complete with a queen-size bed and a pop-up tv disguised as a cabinet at the foot of the bed. The TV screen can swivel to face the master bed or the two plush chairs that Steve and his wife often use to read or relax between games.

Finally, the home is completed with a luxurious master bathroom by the bed area.

From leather-upholstered living rooms to walk-in closets to upstairs dance clubs, we can’t say that we aren’t a little jealous of these luxurious buses . With living on these spectacular mobile mansions and simultaneously touring for months at a time year after year, it’s clear that these celebrities know how to work hard and play hard.

How to Make Your Bunk Feel Like Home

We need to spend some time talking about our bunks. It’s our bed, our sanctuary, and most importantly the one spot that we can temporarily call our own. This brings us to the question, how do we make our bunk feel more like home?

Before we look at what a standard bunk comes with, it’s dimensions, and some tips to personalize, we need to look at the different configurations.

For our template (and cover photo), we’re gonna use a Prevost XLII from Prairie Entertainer .

Configurations

how big are tour bus bunks

Configuration 1 – Standard

Bunk dimensions: 29″ Wide x 74″ Long x 25″ High

As pictured above, The standard config comes with 12 bunks. There are 2x columns/side, with 3 bunks stacked high. Each side has a front and back, as well as a top, middle, and a bottom. This is the most common configuration. Even when there are only 8 people on the bus and only 2/3rds of the bunks are occupied with people, the other 4 bunks are used as junk bunks . This helps make the bus a little less cluttered since there aren’t bags and jackets laying all over the place.

Configuration 2 – Condo Bunks

Bunk dimensions: 29″ Wide x 74″ Long x 35″ High

Condo bunks are more common on busses that have less than 8 people or used as an artist bus. This differs from the standard config because it only has 8 bunks total. There are still 2 columns per side, but only 2 high. Without having a middle bunk, these are called condo bunks because they’re substantially taller than a standard bunk.

Configuration 3 – Mixed

A mix of condos and standard. The best of both worlds where any column can be converted from standard into condos within an hour or so. This is generally a pretty easy, although its a time-consuming process that takes 2 people to do.

Now that we know the configs, we can move onto the stuff that really matters, which bunk are you gonna pick?

Pick the right bunk

Like I mentioned above, there are different configurations contributing to how much space you’re gonna have. Normally, that’s out of your control and depends on how many people it needs to accommodate. Something that you can control, is which bunk you pick. Here are some Pros and Cons of each bunk position.

Front refers to the column of bunks closest to the front of the bus. These are generally the “noisier” bunks since they’re the closest to the front lounge. But if guys are playing Star Wars video games in the back lounge all night anyways, the guys in the back column get their fair share of noise.

These bunks are often the least popular. For a couple of reasons, they deserve it. They tend to sway a little more since they’re on the top half of the center of gravity and can be a little difficult to climb in and out of. Especially when the bus is moving.

I have night terrors and leave my bunk on a frequent basis. The thought of jumping out of my bunk, 5ft in the air while sleeping is not a good look for me. Although they have their downsides, tops are kinda out of the way and can be quiet.

These are the most popular. They’re the easiest to get in and out of. While still having a good distance from the road, they’re not high enough to cause the same problems as the top bunk. I was on a bus once where a middle bunk became a junk bunk. THIS CAN NOT HAPPEN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. THIS IS SACRILIGEOUS TO THE TOUR GODS.

The bottom bunk is tolerable and can be a popular pick for a lot of road dogs. The bottom is good because it’s kinda secluded. People have to bend all the way down to be at your level, so you’re far enough away from everyone’s mouths when they’re talking too loud in bunk alley . You have to be a bit more of a reserved sleeper in the bottom bunk. If you’re tossing and turning and hang your arm or leg out past your curtain, you’re likely to get stepped on. Bottom bunks can be a little louder since they’re close to the engine or generator and can be temperature dependant if the bays are not properly insulated.

Now you know the importance of picking the correct bunk based on your sleeping needs. Let’s dig in and find out what’s available for you before you start buying stuff.

What comes with your bunk ?

On day 1 with you new bus, you roll up to your bunk and see:

  • A mattress (roughly 4 inches deep)
  • A switch light
  • 1 wall mounted pouch
  • If it’s an older bus, you’ll see a DVD player with a fold-down screen mounted to the top of your bunk. These things are THE WORST. For starters, they never fucking work. If they even have power, they’ll have an annoying light that lights up your bunk like an alien invasion making it impossible to sleep. I can almost guarantee that the latch that closes it shut is broken. So every time you hit a bump in the road, the screen falls down at whacks you in the middle of the night.

Needless to say, these things don’t come super comfy with the stock features. If you’re gonna be in this thing for months, let’s chat about some ways to improve.

Let’s Pimp Your Bunk

There are countless ways to customize your bunk. Some people stick pics of their family on the walls, while others don’t give a shit and just use their bunk to sleep. Personally, I like to feng shui the place since its a bit of a nightmare pit, to begin with. Here are some accessories – that I’ve learned over time – that I use to make those select hours that I’m in my bunk, more enjoyable.

The very first thing that you need is a better or at least a second pillow. You can always get to the bus early on the first day and pillage a junk bunk for an extra pillow before anyone else does. Or… you can just bring your own. Personally, I like to go with a memory foam pillow with some sort of cooling technology. But I’ve been known to be a bit of a princess. Something to note, I’d recommend getting a fresh pillowcase and washing it before you take it on tour. I used a pillowcase out of the box one time and my eyes swole up like I had a shellfish allergy.

I’ve seen guys steal these from hotels. The bill can be up to $100 for a used pillow that someone has 100% had sex on. Just plan ahead and order on amazon like a grown-up. Here’s the one I use for $40

Power Strip (or Power Bar if you’re a Canuck)

A power bar is essential for the practicality of your bunk. Usually the bunk comes with only 1 plug and it’s normally high up or in an awkward spot. I recommend getting one with a 90-degree male end and taping it into the plug. If you can get one that has USB plug inputs on it, it’ll save you from having multiple wall plugs. The newer or retrofitted busses have the USB plug in the bunks. They’re a nice touch.

Dual Lock Velcro

You can’t pimp your bunk without dual lock velcro. For its size, it can hold almost anything want onto the walls of your bunk but give you the versatility to take your stuff with you when you leave the bus. I put a small strip on the backside of my iPad so I can take it into the hotel or venue to download shows instead of using the bus internet. I like to fall asleep to movies but hate rolling over onto my iPad in the middle of the night.

I’ll usually go to a target or winners and get a small shelf to dual lock to the wall as well. You can find these in the bath section (for shelves and racks), or the automotive section (for pouches made to hang on the back of a driver’s seat). The more you can utilize the walls instead of having stuff line your bunk, the better you’ll sleep. Especially since you’re in a metal tube barreling down the hwy.

Bluetooth Headphones

This is the only way to listen to anything in your bunk. For starters. No one wants to hear you watching a movie, listening to music, or watching someone’s insta stories from your bunk. After years of using wired headphones and waking up with them wrapped around my neck, Bluetooth headphones have more than proven their worth. If you wanna spend a little extra $ and get some low profile, or noise-canceling features, you’re gonna be a lot more comfortable and potentially be able to fall asleep without taking them out. Just remember to put them on the charger in the morning when you wake up so they’re ready to go when you get back at the end of the night.

Personal Sized Humidifier

I said I was a princess, right? Let’s face it. The air coming out of the vents in the bunk is super dry. I can’t count how many times I’ve woken up in the morning and had a blood-crusted nose. In the winter, my hands start to crack and bleed from air being so dry.

I have a personal sized humidifier that I use in my bunk, fastened to the wall with dual-lock and plugged into a USB slot on my power bar, of coarse.  You can get them now with the ability to take essential oils. A couple of eucalyptus drops will not only help the funk of bunk alley and the corpse sleeping under you, but it will help purify the air and give you a better sleep.

Mattress Liner

I like to get a couple of nights on the bus to get a vibe before I buy a mattress liner. Sometimes the mattress has surpassed its hay-day in the early 2000s. Sometimes it’s a fresh mattress and just needs to be broken in. I find the down or down alternative mattress pads are best in this case because they can fit over the mattress and be tucked underneath. With the foam pads, you have to try and fit the sheet over top. It’s often problematic.

Just know, that every time you put something on top of your mattress, you’re closing in on the already tight space in your bunk.

Quick Story

One time I was on tour with an unnamed rock n roll band that had an “eccentric” singer. A fan did an oil painting of him looking all dark and mysterious. It was actually pretty cool.

Anyways, he started singing weird lullabies to me throughout the day. Like ones about him watching me while I sleep. Although I thought it was super creepy, I just got on with my day. Later I found that he had propped the painting up against the wall in my bunk in a way that I’d only see it when I crawled in. Personally, I don’t suggest putting pictures of the singer on the walls of your bunk, but it was good for a laugh.

Share Some Pictures

Like I said, there are countless ways to customize your bunk on tour. If you have cool pics from your bunk organization or ways you made your bunk feel like home, I WANNA SEE THEM! That’s correct, I WANNA SEE WHERE YOU SLEEP! Send me pics and/or tag me in them on socials.

This Tour Life LLC

So, you’ve found yourself on a bus (coach) tour. Welcome to living in tight quarters with 10 other people and very little privacy. Now you’ll need to know how to properly conduct yourself in your new home. Knowing the unspoken code of the road will help keep you safe and hopefully make your coworkers not downright resent you.

First and foremost, this is your home on the road. It needs to be treated with the same respect you give your own place. Unless you’re a miserable slob, if that’s the case treat it way better than your own home.

Learn your drivers name they are a part of the team- and its just polite! The driver is not your maid; cleaning up your mess is not part of their responsibilities nor is it anyone elses.  The driver is there to drive the tour bus and do light maintenance, not to clean up your 4am Cheetos fight. Remember that at the end of your day, the drivers day is just starting. Check in once in awhile to see if he/she needs anything. K eep your driver happy! The Driver is responsible for more than just getting from point a to point b, e ver try to sleep while someone rides the rumble strip? Not fun.

When the tour bus makes a stop, like at a truck stop for instance, let someone know when you are leaving the bus. You can leave something like your show pass on the jump seat so the driver knows someone has left. You definatly do not want to get left behind- although if you do it would be wise to have the drivers mobile number in case everyone else on the bus is sleeping. Which leads us to another important rule- Bus call. Be on time when the bus is scheduled to depart, don’t get “oil spotted” (left behind).

Remember that you now share a very tiny apartment with around 10 other people, so normal roommate etiquette applies  ×1000. Don’t leave your stuff lying around, especially in the bunk area where someone could easily trip in the dark. Tour busses have loads of hidden storage, explore and use it. If you are lucky enough to not have a full tour bus (12 people), the extra bunk(s) become the “junk bunk” for overflow bags. Luggages goes into the allocated bays which are located underneathe or towards the back and are accessed from the outside of the bus. Be sure to grab the things you may need before the bus starts on its way. Its probably gonna be a long ride.

At all times make sure the tour bus is locked whenever you exit or after you enter! If you go into one of the luggage bays make sure they are locked after you are finished. This is the responsibility of everyone on the bus. Whenever leaving the bus be conscious of where you are when first opening the door- If the bus is parked on the street you need to be aware that you maybe stepping out into traffic or there may be other obstacles… like people.

You are responsible for who you bring on the bus. Guests should be cleared with the other people who live on this bus. These guests need to be aware of the rules and act accordingly.

No Slamming doors! People may be sleeping… Euro/UK drivers usually have a bunk on the bus for daytime sleeping and you may have a second driver as well for long drives since one driver is only legally allowed to drive for a specified number of consecutive hours.

→ buses in the U.S are usually broken up into 3 sections for passengers.

bus_layout_3

1.)The front lounge. 2.)The bunk area- two rows stacked 3 high on each side. 3.)The back lounge.

U.K/euro busses are usually double deckers with the kitchen, lounge and restroom down stairs and the bunks(3 rows stacked 2 high) and a secondary lounge upstairs. The same rules apply.

The front lounge

generally has some seating, an ice chest, TV’s, a small kitchenette with a booth and a restroom. Some tour buses have a slide out on the drivers side to expand when parked up. If someone buys some special vegan gluten free item and writes their name on it, feel free to make fun of them, but don’t eat their stuff. Classic roommate no no. Typically, drinks store in the drawers under the front lounge couches, and cold drinks can go in the coolers (beer!).

The restroom is not a general use facility. It is for LIQUID WASTE ONLY. The septic maintenance on chemical toilets is too costly and frequent to justify. Any toilet paper and feminine products go in the waste basket and anything else should wait until the tour bus stops to refuel. If that is not an option you can ask the driver to stop or as a last resort you can stretch a plastic bag over the toilet. I repeat, this maneuver is as a last resort only. Try not to be gross, ok?

Any water from sinks on the tour bus should be used for washing/rinsing only. Use bottled water to brush your teeth. Note personal hygiene is that much more significant when in such close contact. Though some buses do have showers they are almost never in operation. You’ll need to shower in the venue or a day room at a hotel, if provided, when venue showers are nonexistent.

When you’re tired go to your bunk, do not fall asleep in common areas. If you do you will probably wake up with a sharpie illustrated face.

Your bunk is your sacred space. It’s often the only place you can go to get a break from the madness. As far as choosing a bunk- first come first serve. If you are joining an existing crew ask what bunks are available. If you need to have a lower/higher bunk for any reason advance this with the tour manager, hopefully they can accommodate you. Try to avoid, tempting as it may be, making phone calls from your bunk- especially when others are sleeping. We can all hear you baby talking with your girlfriend/boyfriend and it’s obnoxious. Your bunk is probably outfitted with a flip down TV that is more useful as a place to hit your head rather than a source of entertainment.

Speaking of hitting your head, make sure you orient yourself with your HEAD TO THE REAR  of the tour bus. If the driver has to brake aggressively you could receive a serious brain or neck injury IF YOUR NOT LAYING FEET TOWARDS THE FRONT.

The bunk area should be kept cold so as not to incubate germs ( info here ). Getting sick on tour sucks, getting the whole crew sick is hell.

Quality of sleep is drastically affect by the temperature  ( info here ). The optimal temperature varies from 65°F to 72°F with 68°F being what is best for most people .  Use a blanket if your cold, don’t touch the thermostat.

Useful things to have in your bunk:

– Earplugs

– Water

– Headphones

– Book

the back lounge

This consists of seating, closet space, an ice chest and usually a television with video game console. The use of this area depends on the tour. Sometimes its for phone calls and meetings, other times it is just overflow from the front lounge. It all depends on the collective personality of the people riding on the bus.

Most importantly, remember that you were hired as a professional and you should conduct yourself as such. Everyone likes to have a good time but don’t over do it. Don’t be the person that pukes out the top bunk. Don’t be someone who gets so drunk and mistakes someone else’s bunk for the urinal (true story). More often than not people get fired not for poor job performance but for poor behavior.

Hopefully this helps you to stay safe, stay liked, and stay employed.

Tour Buses with Sleeping Bunks

busrates 08/05/2015 Group Planners Travel Tips

Attention celebrities, musicians, authors, political groups and others embarking upon a cross-country tour: in addition to motor coaches, minibusses and school buses, BusRates.com also indexes bus owner/operators who own Entertainer buses in their fleet.

An entertainer bus, also known as a Sleeper Coach or a Tour Bus, is the vehicle of choice for groups looking to lease a bus for an extended period of time. These buses are unique and fall into a specialty classification within the BusRates.com database, as they are often leased for 30 days or more. They are the only bus type where driver and fuel costs are itemized in the quote.

The most distinguishing factor of the sleeper coach is, of course, the bunks. Some entertainer coaches eschew a large rear seating area to incorporate a King-size bed and other amenities you’d find in your own home bedroom. After all, Entertainer coaches are customized, mobile homes that aim to bring all of the niceties and luxuries of the home to the road.

All entertainer coaches are individually styled; meaning that no two entertainers are alike. They feature kitchen and lounge areas, complete with captain’s chairs, televisions, tables and perimeter-style seating.

The best way to determine what the interior of the entertainer bus looks like is to ask the owner for photos. After all, on an extended cross-country tour, you’ll be spending a lot of time on the bus, so it’s best to make sure the customized interiors fit your needs.

Unlike a charter bus, minibus or school bus, in which you save the most money by booking with local operators, the extra cost to deadhead an Entertainer coach is negligible when compared with the longevity of the full itinerary. Because the buses themselves are rented for extended periods of time (such as a month or longer), it’s not a problem to rent from a company half-way across the country to get the entertainer coach you want. Because of this, many entertainer coach companies call Nashville, Tennessee their home. Music City USA is home to a number of excellent Entertainer bus companies. Another popular area to find an Entertainer bus is  Chicago, Illinois . It’s a good idea to use BusRates.com to search the major cities in your area of the country to track down a company that owns an Entertainer bus in their fleet. By contacting the owner directly, you can avoid hefty commission fees that national brokers impose on top of the going rate for the bus.

Cheers to hitting the road and seeing the country with the luxury that a sleeper coach provides. If you have any questions related to entertainer coach rental, feel free to contact the BusRates.com staff as we’d be glad to help you find the best bus operator to meet your needs.

You Can Travel Across the Country in These Tour Buses Used by Celebs Like Dolly Parton and Cher

But the opportunity won’t be available forever!

bus and the inside lounge

Normally, the company’s 115 buses are sold out, leaving no inventory to market to the public, brothers Trent and Joey Hemphill tell House Beautiful . But now that they have more availability, they took the opportunity to let families, business professionals, and anyone else who wants to see the country—or simply get across it without flying, staying in a hotel, or eating out—rent the buses.

“It’s kind of like a cruise ship on wheels—you can fall asleep in one town and wake up in the next,” Trent says. That’s typically what their celeb clients do while on tour, but the way you travel is truly up to you. The company can help make custom itineraries for the renter. People have taken anywhere from one-week to 37-day trips. Whether you want to travel at night, during the day, or stay at a campground for most of your trip, it’s your choice.

Better yet, the company comes to you. You don’t have to live near or travel to Nashville to begin your journey. “We can pick you up at your home, and then take you where you want to be,” Trent says.

Each of the buses comes with a driver or two, depending on your plans, so you can relax for the entire trip. These drivers are the same ones who operate the vehicles when celebrities lease them out, and so are highly experienced. The company can make plans for them to stay in hotels throughout your trip. It can also have them tested for COVID-19 before the trip and require them to wear gloves and a mask during it. “There’s a door that closes off the driver that’s almost like a cockpit in an airplane,” Trent says. “You can really do this safely and see the whole United States.”

The buses themselves were originally bought as empty, incomplete vehicles, or what the Hemphills call “shells.” As Joey says, “We build them out and outfit them with all of the luxuries, so they basically become rolling homes.”

front lounge

There are two types of buses: the crew bus and the star bus. The crew bus accommodates up to 12 people. It has bunks in the middle, rear and front lounges, and a small galley. The star bus can accommodate up to six people. It has bunks, a queen-size bed, a large bath with a shower, a half bath at the front, and a front lounge with more cooking capacity. Every bus comes with high-end furniture, electronics, and appliances. Some of the amenities include a convection oven, fridge, freezer, granite/quartz countertops, coffeemaker, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and a gaming system. Almost everything—doors, windows, shades—can be controlled with a tablet, and every bus has a strict cleaning regimen.

galley area

Pricing depends on the trip you plan to take. If you’re going to burn a lot of fuel and need two drivers, that will cost more than if you decide to stay at a park and camp on the bus for a few days. You can expect to pay from $1,200 to a couple grand per day. If you want, the company can add a car hauler to the back of the bus. That way, you can set up camp in the bus and take your car out for day trips. “We would say the more the merrier, not only for the fun of it but also for the expense,” Trent adds.

The brothers suggest taking this opportunity for everything from family bonding time to golf trips. “We may have some availability next year,” Trent says, “but what will happen sooner or later is we’ll go back to 90 percent sold-out, and then what we’ll be able to offer the general public will be limited.”

While the company has had some openings in the past, this is the first time they’ve experienced such broad availability. If you’re able to—whether you want to remotely work on it or take a safe mini vacay— rent a bus now while you still can!

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

Skoolie Floor Plan and Bus Tour: One Year Later

how big are tour bus bunks

One of the most fun parts of the school bus conversion process is choosing your skoolie floor plan. Even with the most careful planning and foresight, however, you might find after living in your school bus conversion for a while that changes are in order.

We most certainly had ours, and the bus has gone through several renovations since our initial skoolie floor plan was drawn.

( You can see our original skoolie layout post here! )

Shop our Skoolie on Amazon! | Since We Woke Up | www.sincewewokeup.com

As a matter of fact, after a year of living in the bus, there are parts that look completely different from our original skoolie build. We decided an updated skoolie floor plan and bus tour were in order, so we headed back to Rock Creek, Montana – the first place we ever took our skoolie and where we happened to shoot our first-ever tour of the bus!

Keep reading to see the renovations we’ve made in the year we’ve lived here, a detailed drawing of our skoolie floor plan, and the video!

If you want to jump straight to the video, you can see it here !

THE RENOVATIONS WE’VE MADE TO OUR SKOOLIE FLOOR PLAN

If you’ve followed along with us for a while, you’ve likely seen the big changes on social media. And because I (Tawny) have commitment issues, there have been quite a few! Here’s a list, for those who haven’t been around as long.

REMOVING THE BUNK BEDS

Our first renovation came just a few months after we finished building, after our first big trip. Originally, the front of the bus housed the kids’ bunk beds. We’d chosen bunks because we wanted the kids to each have their own dedicated space on the bus. In theory, it was a perfect layout, but in practice the kids despised it.

They didn’t have enough headroom to fully sit up, and they hated being confined to their bunks while we drove. They said having “rooms” didn’t matter so much to them. Having space to hang out as a family, comfortable seating on the road, and a bigger “living room” and television were more their priorities.

So we ripped out the bunks and reused the wood and mattresses to create a built-in TV hutch, with a faux mantle that folded down into a murphy bed. We also used the opportunity to rip out our boxy storage couch that had matched the bunks and put in a smaller, platform-style couch with a matching mattress that mirrored the fold-down bed. Wire baskets underneath gave us just as much storage without the bulk.

Now they each have their own bunk for sleeping, but more room for hanging out during the waking hours. We were able to get a 40″ television on a swivel, and we added a hammock chair for additional seating.

REMODELING THE BATHROOM

A few months later, we decided we really wanted a bathtub. We decided to remove our washer/dryer unit, a decision a lot of people questioned our sanity on.

But the thing is, we really didn’t use it that often. In order to run it, we needed to be plugged in – which we rarely are. It became easier while traveling to hit up the big washers at laundry mats and get it all done in one go versus trying to hook up and spend hours doing multiple loads.

And while we’re near friends and family, it gives us an excuse to stop and chat while we do laundry.

So the washer/dryer unit got pulled out of its large vanity cupboard, and then we removed the vanity altogether. In its place we built a smaller vanity cupboard half the size, meaning the toilet was able to move over to where the washer had lived. In the space left empty where the toilet once hung out, we built a concrete tub that matched the rest of our wetroom-styled bathroom!

After one year of living in our bus, we're releasing an updated skoolie floor plan and video bus tour including all the changes and renovations we've made! | sincewewokeup.com | Since We Woke Up

FINISHING THE ENTRY

Winter hit and we realized our front area was letting out a TON of heat. We’d left the entry as one of those “someday” things and around the time the temps hit freezing we decided someday had arrived.

We insulated the stairs and then added flooring all the way to the front and down the stairs. At the bottom step, we installed some of the remaining Acacia wood tiles we had left from our bathroom to help wet and muddy shoes dry out.

Then we designed insulated faux wall panels to go over our large front windows. When we’re parked for any length of time, we install them and hang artwork up, and it really helps the bus feel like home. When we travel these get stored in our basement and we enjoy the big panoramic views around us, utilizing the blinds for privacy instead.

REMODELING THE BATHROOM AGAIN

As spring hit, we realized we didn’t really like the awesome concrete tub we’d worked so hard on. It took almost half of our water supply to fill it, which didn’t make it practical at all.

I also really wanted the added bonus of being able to take a bath outdoors when we were out in the wild alone. After a ton of research, we realized an old wine barrel would be perfect – they’re already watertight and ready to go, we could keep it portable and let it drain into our existing shower drain, and it matched the bus’s decor perfectly.

We ordered this half-barrel from Amazon and drilled a hole near the bottom for drainage. Where the old tub had been we put in a hinged wall so that the tub can be taken off the bus if I want to, say, take a bath outside under a huge full moon!

ADDING TO OUR BEDROOM

On the other side of that hinged wall, on the wheel well where the original tub had been, we decided to absorb the space into our bedroom. Since the kids spend the majority of their time on the bus in their lounge area up front, Mike and I often work in our bedroom. Adding a window to that side of the bus allows a good deal of extra light in and opens our bedroom up to beautiful proportions.

This means we are able to work out of bed whenever we feel like it without feeling shut in. It also meant we had room for additional storage, which we found in the addition of this gorgeous storage chest/table .

OUR SKOOLIE FLOOR PLAN

We receive pretty frequent messages asking about our skoolie floor plan and if we have a flat lay of it – and finally, we do have an updated version!

This was also, by the way, my first experience in digital art, which was super fun.

Without further ado, here is our skoolie floor plan and a breakdown area by area.

LIVING AREA

Starting at the front, there’s a shelving unit “mudroom” to hold keys and bags, and shoes. When we aren’t driving we have insulated panels that fit perfectly into the front windows, and there are coat hooks to complete the “room” effect. A sheer curtain divides this area from the rest while keeping it feeling open.

Right behind that, there’s a seven-foot-long couch that has a ton of storage underneath. We use wire storage bins that fit perfectly underneath to store electronics, paperwork, bedding, and craft supplies. At the far end of the couch is an open cupboard that fits a fold-up table the perfect size to fit between the two couches for game night.

Straight across is an entertainment center that has a fold-down murphy couch. When it’s folded up, it’s hidden as a mantle. Our 40″ TV is on a swiveling, pullout stand above it that allows us to move it around so the whole room can see it. An L-shaped shelving unit finishes out the entertainment center.

The refrigerator is an almost full-size standalone unit that can use either electricity from our solar system or propane, and across the way is an L-shaped bank of kitchen cabinets. There’s a cupboard for the garbage and cleaning supplies, three large drawers that hold all the dishes, an open-style cabinet that holds pots and pans under the stove, and two large pantry cupboards for food.

The kitchen features a three-burner gas range and a built-in sink with a truly amazing kitchen faucet  that we LOVE, feather finish concrete countertops , and a breakfast bar with seating for four with stackable stools .

Beside the fridge is an open shelving unit we created from an old map that hung in our old house. We used elastic on the front to hold our copper-lidded dry-good glass jars in – they’re easy to get out but don’t move as we drive.

A floating shelf runs the length of the kitchen and holds DIY herb storage jars , and magnetic spice jars are lined up above the fridge for quick access.

Right behind this is a pretty cool corkboard wall with a cork map overlay, and built into this is the wood stove nook.

We scored a vintage-style Jotul stove for $40 that someone had around back in a junk pile, and my dad built a concrete/metal surround for it in order to show off the awesome rust color we chose to leave on it.

The side door is still usable, and we use it during the winter to bring wood in. Moving down you’re in a short hallway that leads to the master suite and the bathroom, which closes with a sliding barn-style door.

The bathroom is built wetroom style, with a large copper showerhead on the wall as you come in.

Our Nature’s Head composting toilet sits to the left beside a small built-in vanity with a small basin sink with a matching copper faucet. The vanity acts as our “utility closet” that houses our water pump and on-demand hot water heater .

Across from the vanity is our wine barrel bathtub, which sits on the Acacia wood-tiled floors .

We did the whole thing in the same feather finish concrete we used on the kitchen counters and wood stove surround.

Around the corner, over a small step that covers the last wheel well, you enter the master suite.

Our bed is done platform style with a ton of storage underneath that we use mostly to store camping gear and other items we don’t need daily. We created the top in four sections that each lift independently to make it easier to get underneath, and in the center are three HUGE drawers that pull out from the front (about 3×3 each) and house our clothes and shoes.

On the wall opposite the bed is a shelf and bar for hanging clothes. Another series of small shelves cover the back of the hinged wall that opens for the bathtub beside the closet, and on that wheel well sits a carved chest that we use for storage.

A lot of people choose to wall off the rear engine compartment of their bus, but I couldn’t handle the thought of covering that gorgeous huge window up – so we painted and upholstered a special mattress and turned it into a reading nook beside the bed.

As a matter of fact, we chose to leave as many of the windows uncovered as possible for the natural light. The ones we did cover (behind the bunk beds and fridge, in the bathroom, and behind our headboard) we simply insulated over.

In order not to have anything show through on these windows (as attractive as fluffy pink fiberglass insulation is) we first used a special kind of dark window film that acts as a thermal barrier and one-way tint. It makes all the windows appear black from the outside, and also helps gives us a little privacy.

SKOOLIE FLOOR PLAN AND BUS TOUR, ONE YEAR LATER

While we’ve tried to include as much as we could in other tours, we always seem to miss something. We’ve also made so many changes that none of them are completely accurate anymore – every bus tour we’ve done is outdated in some way now!

So while celebrating our one-year busiversary , in the same spot we shot our first-ever bus tour, we took time to shoot a follow-up that went into more detail than we’ve ever gone into (we tell you about our junk drawer people) and all the updates.

See it on our (new!) YouTube channel here!

We hope that we managed to hit everything between the video and this post, but if you have questions about our skoolie floor plan – just ask! Email us at [email protected] and we’ll do our best to help.

  • DIRECTV / WIFI All of our coaches come with dual DirecTV satellite systems and WiFi units... This is the total cost of satellite and WiFi for your tour...

  • TOLLS / PERMITS / IFTA / DOT FEES This number represents the costs involved with all tolls, state permits, IFTA and DOT fees in both the United States and Canada... We incorporate devices and transponders in each coach to manage the costs, documentation, and compliance with all tolls and permitting...
  • MANAGEMENT / ADMINISTRATIVE FEES This line item reflects a 4% Management / Administrative Fee based on the coach daily rate and trailer rental fee to help offset the increased cost of insurance, parts and labor...
  • END OF TOUR CLEANING FEES This number reflects what you will pay to have the coach cleaned, steam cleaned, all linens changed, final bus wash, and final generator service after your tour...
  • TOTAL FUEL COST While it is one of the three big costs of touring, it is also the big variable... This number is clearly an estimate, so remember to shoot a little high on your fuel price selection... Anyhow, this number, based on your mileage inputs, selections for fuel pricing and MPG, will give you a credible estimate of your fuel costs for the tour, including all deadhead fuel costs...
  • DRIVER BASE PAY This number represents how much your driver will cost for his daily base pay for your tour... Weekly services, overdrives, etc. are not included in this number, but are listed below as separate line items...

  • DRIVER HOTEL BUYOUTS (DEADHEAD) If your tour has deadhead on the front or back, the driver will more than likely incur "hotel buyouts" during that deadhead travel... Hotel buyouts are used to compensate / reimburse a driver for sleep breaks during deadhead... The rate for each hotel buyout is $150, and it is auto-calculated based on the number of deadhead days you entered...
  • PAYROLL FEES (25%) Taxes, taxes, taxes... This is the fee that our payroll company charges for all the driver's federal, state and local payroll taxes, along with worker's comp insurance and unemployment insurance... It is set at 25% of all earnings that are handled "in lease" if you go to contract... Call Don Neuen at Star Coaches to see how you can lower this cost by simply paying some of the driver costs on the road...
  • DRIVER HOTEL ROOMS Drivers require a hotel room each day of the tour... While this expense is always handled out of the road, we believe it is important to list this significant touring expense... That is why we suggest factoring in $200 / day for budgetary purposes...
  • RENTAL TRAILER Rental trailers cost $150 / day... This number reflects the cost of a rental trailer for your tour...
  • MISC. ROAD EXPENSES While on tour, you will need to purchase various items for the bus such as cleaning supplies, toilet chemicals, paper towels, etc... This number also factors in the cost for estimated Uber rides for the Driver back and forth to his / her hotel. Our goal is to match you with the right bus or buses to suit your needs.   If you would like to learn more about our available inventory, we invite you to browse our online catalog and submit a quote request. You can also contact our sales team by phone for more personalized service.

How much do tour buses cost?

Master’s Transportation’s large inventory allows us to offer extremely competitive pricing on all new and used motor coaches and travel vans. Our prices are some of the lowest in the industry because we receive volume discounts from our long-standing partners in manufacturing.

With that being said, several factors will impact the cost of your bus or van. These factors include the model, age, mileage, equipment package, and financing method you select.

Can I finance a new or used travel bus?

Yes, Master’s Transportation offers several financing and leasing options , including:

  • Operational leases
  • Short-term lease
  • Financed leases
  • Trac leases
  • Purchase financing

Our tour buses can be leased for seasonal or yearly time frames, depending on your needs.

Leasing is an excellent choice due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, which has limited the in-stock inventory of our tour buses for sale.

If you are looking for a way to unlock additional savings, take advantage of the Section 179 IRS deduction to reduce your tax obligations.

Do you offer repair services or parts for tour vehicles?

Of course we do! Beyond sales and rentals, we also serve as a reliable partner for tour bus repair and maintenance services, in addition to having access to thousands of parts for commercial vehicles spanning a wide range of makes and models.

How many passengers can a tour bus hold?

The seating capacity of your vehicle will vary greatly depending on which model you choose. For instance, our tour vans typically carry between 10-15 passengers whereas our large motor coaches can accommodate as many as 75 tourists. We also offer intermediate-sized tour buses that can accommodate 15-30 guests.

Do tour bus drivers need a CDL?

Tour bus drivers must possess a CDL if they are operating a vehicle that can accommodate more than 15 passengers. Tour vans or buses that carry 15 passengers or less do not require a CDL to drive.

Can I buy a tour bus that is located in another city or state?

Of course! Master’s Transportation offers nationwide delivery. If you have found the perfect tour bus, but it is located outside of your state of residence, give us a call. We can arrange for the vehicle to be delivered straight to you.

Can I rent one of your tour buses or vans?

Yes! Master’s Transportation is the nation’s largest commercial bus rental company. Whether you need a short-term or long-term rental, we will be glad to assist.

The global food system has a lot of problems. Powerful companies dominate the market — from seeds to supermarkets — and dictate what farmers grow, how much they're paid, and what consumers eat.

In addition, in recent years, there has been a rise of ultra-processed foods in our diets, which has been linked to poor health outcomes  including a higher risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, cancer, frailty, depression, and death. According to a report by the Food System Economics Commission, the global food system is responsible for about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, which when combined with other greenhouse gas emissions could lead to a 2.7 degrees Celsius warming by the end of the century. To make matters worse, climate-related disasters such as droughts and flooding threaten up to one-third of the world's food production .

Reading this list of the problems with the world’s current food industry may make you feel uneasy. However, there is hope. We still have time to transform our current global food system. A study by the Food System Economics Commission, " The Economics of the Food System Transformation ," suggests that transitioning to a more sustainable food system could result in up to $10 trillion ( £7.9 trillion ) in benefits annually. This change could also promote better human health and contribute to mitigating the global climate emergency .

But what exactly does a sustainable food system entail? The report defines it as a system that involves making changes to different aspects of the current global food system from production to consumption that work together to achieve inclusive, health-enhancing, and environmentally sustainable  outcomes.

As consumers, we can also play a role in transforming the global food system. One solution that puts us in control is growing our own food. This not only benefits the environment but also promotes healthier living. It's time to take action and make a difference.

To achieve this goal, non-profit organization Big Green is on a mission to revolutionize North America’s food system by empowering everyone to grow food in their neighborhood. To date, they’ve helped over half a million people by providing garden beds to 775 schools and 1,660 families , and have given over $5.44 million in grants to grassroots nonprofits and schools .

This year, Big Green is embarking on its next mission: the "Grow Together" Bus Tour. The tour will travel across several cities, including Texas, San Antonio, Memphis, Atlanta, Savannah, and Minneapolis, to unite communities through the transformative power of growing food over food and gardening events , by sharing gardening knowledge and giving away gardening kits . Big Green is partnering with over 10 organizations from across the US, and will also showcase the efforts of change-makers and communities who have used food to champion healthier and sustainable living within their cities.

Global Citizen spoke with Big Green's Vice President of Advancement, Madeleine Nelson, about the bus tour and the impact the organization has had over the last 12 years empowering communities, schools, and families to grow their own food as well as the physical, mental, social, and economic benefits of growing your own food, how the current food system in the US has disconnected people from their food and how Big Green is on a mission to combat this through the power of gardening.

What inspired Big Green to launch this bus tour and what outcome are you hoping for when the tour ends?

We really hope to inspire people to start growing food. So the bus is big and loud and colorful and really eye-catching. And we're really excited to pull up to community spaces and community events throughout this tour. We have about 1,000 gardens to give away over the course of the tour and then tons and tons of seeds and other gardening supplies. So we really want to provide people with the tools to start growing their own food so they can experience how easy and how satisfying and rewarding it is.

Can you tell us more about the core functions of the bus?

It has a podcast studio. We have been beginning to use podcasting as a way for the organizations that we work with to start telling their stories and start sharing the wealth of knowledge that they have about growing food, anything from land access to grant seeking and all the different ways that they are advancing their missions and using this as a tool to share their knowledge with rest of the community. The bus also has what I lovingly call an “ice cream truck window,” sort of like a food service window. So we'll be able to hand gardens off of the bus as though we were giving kids popsicles. We have these really cool five-gallon-sized cloth pots that are a really easy way to get started with growing food. And so we have in a little tote, everything a person needs for two seasons of growing. We'll have things like lettuces, I think we're giving away radishes and beans. So lots of interesting things, really kid-friendly things that they can pop off of a plant and enjoy, maybe for the first time.

Can you tell us why Big Green is focusing on helping people reconnect with their food through gardening?

I think fundamentally Big Green believes that people are disconnected from our food. So from you know, whether that is from where it comes from or the effects that it is having on our bodies or how it makes us feel. We believe that there's a rise in convenience, the rising cost of groceries and the distance our food is traveling to us. We're just increasingly disconnected from fundamentally where it comes from and what it does for us. So when we say we believe that growing food changes lives, we believe that it has the power to improve our nutrition security, so the consistent, predictable, and affordable access to healthy food. That has myriad mental health benefits getting us out into nature and the soothing effects of gardening and being connected with our food in that way. It is a connection to nature and a connection to the climate and nothing will remind you of our collective impact on the climate other than watching your garden shrivel up in July because it is 10 degrees hotter than you're expecting it to be and no rain is coming. And it also has the power to positively impact economic mobility for people, as the return on investment for gardening is massive. Not to mention the quality, variety and locality of food that people are able to access when they grow it themselves or when they source it locally.

What positive impact have Big Green’s programs had over the years?

Madeleine Nelson from Big Green has witnessed first hand over the years the positive impact Big Green’s programmes have had on families and communities, including inspiring a young man in Indianapolis who was experiencing food insecurity to transform an empty lot into a community garden, to helping a young woman from Chicago manage her diabetes through growing her own food, to helping to foster intergenerational connections between grandparents and grandchildren in passing down food and gardening traditions.

What has been the response so far regarding the bus tour?

Rev. Dr. W. Raymond Bryant Sr., Presiding Elder of The San Antonio District of The African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), partnered with Big Green for a recipe demo day during the bus tour. He shared his thoughts on the tour: “In our tradition, almost everything we do is centered around food, but not necessarily healthy food. Through our relationship with Big Green, we’ve learned to cook things differently, and prepare different healthy recipes. We do cooking demonstrations together and teach people to read nutrition labels. We know that food is medicine and that growing food changes lives, without a doubt.”

Bobby and Derravia Rich, founders of Black Seeds Urban Farms, also shared their appreciation for Big Green's bus tour: “Communities need a central point that they can trust and go to, to learn about agriculture and their food. Traditional nonprofit and philanthropy don't get a chance to have the relationship that we have with Big Green. We can grow more food for more people. We wouldn’t be able to tap into this change without the love from Big Green.”

How can people get involved with Big Green and support your mission?

We would love for people to follow along for the bus tour . There's also a feature for people to invite the bus to come to their city and to explore the food system and explore the changemakers who are local to their community. Then we think that gardening is as easy as planting a seed. So we would invite people to just try it. Just find an interesting seed packet. Find a container, you don't have to have land, you don't have to have a green thumb. You just have to have sun, water and soil. So we would invite people to just try it and see how easy it can be and how satisfying it can be to grow your own food.

See Ya, San Antonio!

A huge thank you to everyone we met this weekend for the fun, food, and friendship! We spent Saturday morning with the amazing San Antonio Million Gardens Project trying everyone’s favorite garden-to-table recipes. They were all delicious, but we’re STILL thinking about Nora’s crunchy collard wraps – YUM. After we said goodbye, we rolled on over to our favorite east side oasis, Gardopia Gardens! There we joined new and old friends for music, giveaways, food, and gardening! Big Green gave away hundreds of garden kits, most of them to new growers, and Gardopia sent hundreds of fruit trees and vines off to happy new homes. We can’t say enough good things about this weekend, but we can say we’ll be back!
