The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line in Japanese) connects several piers around the Tokyo Bay Area (Hinode, Hama Rikyu, Nihonbashi, Odaiba and Toyosu) with Asakusa (which is convenient for Senso-ji Temple and close to the museum district of Ueno, as well as Tokyo Sky Tree).

1. Sumida River Cruise from Asakusa to Odaiba

With their fleet of 11 ships on 7 routes, you can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Asakusa, Hinode Pier in Shinagawa, Hamarikyu Pier in Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba Seaside Park , Tokyo Big Sight or Palette Town in Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park .

The futuristic cruise ship Himiko is the face of the fleet, running on the Asakusa-Odaiba Direct Line. Designed by Matsumoto Leiji, the famous artist behind the manga Galaxy Express 999, characters from the series stand on Himiko’s inner deck. Other ships, such as the sophisticated Jubilee and the new samurai ship Atakemaru are also popular.

Fares are based on distance and range from 200 yen for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Piers) to 2,000 yen (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu). Atakemaru , the newest route and ship, features an “ordinary” rate of 1,000 yen for adults (1,500 for a round-trip) on its route from Hinode to Odaiba, but also has a “special room” rate of 1,500 yen (2,000 round trip) that allow you to enjoy a more comfortable ride for the 40-minute trip. Bento boxes may be reserved in advance for groups of 20 or more.

One thing to watch out for is that the water bus services end relatively early in the evening, and if you are looking to spend time at your destination, you may wish to take the train back to your lodgings. However, there’s nothing quite like a summer day on the river, passing under the Sumida Bridges. Refreshments, even alcohol, are available on the water buses and a guide will provide information about the area as you cruise. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, and will give you a view of Tokyo that you simply can’t find anywhere else!

Cruising Sumida River - A Leisurely Way to See the Heart of Tokyo

Escape the crowds of Tokyo. Take to the river for a serene view of the city in a relaxed setting.

Sumidagawa is Tokyo’s main river. It slices through central Tokyo on its route to the bay, as it has done for centuries. In days of old, the river served as a major mode for transporting cargo. Now visitors ply the waters in glass-topped boats seeking a unique perspective of the world’s largest city.

Tugboats discharge water cannons to welcome a cruise ship into Tokyo Bay. The giant ferris wheel at Odaiba, a popular entertainment area, is visible on the far side of the ship.

The river cruise departs from three spots, Hinode Pier on Tokyo Bay, Hamarikyu Garden and Asakusa for an approximately 40-minute cruise between Hinode and Asakusa. We board at Hamarikyu Garden. We leave the protection behind the sea wall to pass through large water gates that slowly open onto the Sumida River, then close again behind us. We head south on the river to Hinode Pier where we drop off some passengers and pick up others. The captain takes a wide turn through Tokyo Bay before starting north for Asakusa. Southward we catch a glimpse of Odaiba with the huge ferris wheel and Rainbow Bridge. The bridge resembles San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge but this one is gray. At night it lights up in a palette of rich colors, the inspiration behind the name rainbow. A cruise ship steams under the bridge in search of its berth.

Rainbow Bridge lives up to its name at night when it is bathed in colored lights. In the daytime the expanse resembles a gray version of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.

Upstream we glide by Hamarikyu Garden , then Tsukiji Fish Market wharves. Tsukiji is an early morning fish market featuring some 450 types of fish. Merchants arrive in the dark to make purchases for their shops and restaurants from the 1,700 stalls. Visitors who come after the 5-8 a.m. rush can mosey through the market at their leisure. We see the backside of Tsukiji where fishing boats unload their catch.

Frenzied Tsukiji Fish Market quiets down after the predawn rush of fishermen, restauranteurs and shop owners. Visit the market after 8 a.m. to avoid the stampede.

We pass mid-rise apartments with kakebuton –futon comforters–airing on the balconies. Greenbelts and flower gardens lined with walkways situated along the riverfront peer out at us. Businesses of all shapes and sizes butt up against the watery right of way. Fishing boats and barges for hauling cargo line portions of the river. This is not the most scenic view in spots, but it tells a story of its own regarding how a mega city lives in harmony with its rivers and and its residents in unity with neighboring businesses. Commercial and residential real estate mingle throughout Tokyo’s wards. We ride below no less that twelve bridges on our trip upstream, each bridge painted a distinctively different color than the last.

A sleek water bus, the streamlined Himiko, approaches from the direction we are heading. Heads crane to study the futuristic-looking vessel featuring 3D windows as it slips by. We are riding in a modest two-level boat with open air windows along the sides and flat glass roof above our heads. We almost hear a wistful sigh from fellow passengers as the gleaming boat hurries past.

A futuristic water bus attracts attention from envious would-be passengers as it cruises down the Sumida River.

Up ahead we have a perfect view of Tokyo Skytree and the distinctive building of Asahi Brewing Company. We make a u-turn into our port at Tokyo Cruise in Asakusa. Our journey is complete. We wind our way up the ramp to street level, leaving behind our modest water bus. Already the next load of passengers are queued for their trip down to Hinode Pier.

Approaching Asakusa, we spot the hard-to-miss Tokyo Skytree that dominates the cityscape. Hidden from view in this photo, the nearby Asahi Brewing Company building draws your eye to the distinctive design resembling a frothy mug of beer.

If you are fortunate to be in Tokyo on the last Saturday of July, make your way to Asakusa before dark for the biggest fireworks display in the city. Find a riverside spot to view the show, but be prepared to encounter a lot of people—thousands come to experience the centuries old tradition of summertime fireworks beside Sumidagawa.

Passengers begin loading on a southbound water bus at the Asakusa boat terminal. Some boat lines offer evening dinner cruises.

The Sumida River is Tokyo's best known river and is a great place to see as visitors to the Japanese capital, offering numerous cruise options, and dotted with a medley of photogenic bridges.

Sumida River, Tokyo 隅田川

The Sumida River ( Sumidagawa ) is one of Tokyo's main rivers, and the most familiar Tokyo river to visitors to the city. The Sumida River starts directly north of Tokyo, then goes out eastward through eastern Tokyo.

The river branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards. 

There are 37 bridges on the Sumida River, most of them for road traffic, but there are several train bridges, a pedestrian bridge, and a pipe bridge, as well. Most of the bridges across the Sumida River join Taito ward (west bank) with Sumida ward (east bank). (Note that the  kanji  for the Sumida river 隅田川 and for Sumida ward 墨田区 are different.)

Sumida River Walk

If you've ever taken the train from Tobu-Asakusa station to Nikko, you'll certainly remember the magnificent view, especially in the morning and evening, of the Sumida River just after departure. Since summer 2020, it has also been possible to enjoy this view without taking the train, as a pedestrian path, called the Sumida River Walk , has been built under the iron railway bridge. In addition to the varied views of the river and cityscape, this also shortens the walk from Asakusa to the Tokyo Skytree, especially if you walk along the Kitajukken River. You also pass Tokyo Mizumachi, a new open-air shopping mall, as well as restaurants and cafés directly on the Kitajukken, beneath the railway line.

The Sumida River branches off the larger Arakawa River at the Iwabuchi Watergate in Tokyo's Kita ward, and goes about 24 km down to Tokyo Bay via Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto and Chuo wards. The stretch of the river that gets the most tourist traffic is between Taito and Sumida wards , only about 2.5km east of the Imperial Palace, and just a short train ride from Tokyo Station .

Sumida-gawa is around 160 m wide at this point, and you naturally get a much better impression on foot than by briefly looking down from a train window. While trains cross the bridge upside down, the wooden plank path, accessible between 7 and 10 p.m., stretches to the side. In some places, glass panes have been embedded in the floor, to create a glass floor for viewing the river through the glass. A sign reading "Yumi Katsura Lover's Sancturary", also allows love padlocks to be affixed to the fence.

The Sumida River promenade is therefore an ideal place for couples in love, especially at sunset, and of course for long-married people. The walkway is fully wheelchair-accessible, thanks to low-angle ramps.

The Sumida River Promenade links the two parts of Sumida Park , stretching along both banks of the river. Very popular, and not just during the cherry blossom season, the southern part of the park has been redeveloped with numerous family-friendly amenities.

Sumida River Attractions

Along its length are numerous sights and attractions. The Asakusa district in Taito ward, served by the two main Tokyo water cruise companies' ferries, is famous for its bustling old-time Tokyo atmosphere and ancient, picturesque Sensoji Temple . The towering, elegant Tokyo Skytree in Sumida ward, offering unparalleled panoramas of the metropolis, and lots of fun shopping, is accessible from the same point in the river, a little east from Asakusa, over Azuma Bridge.

A few minutes by boat south of Asakusa you glide past the  Ryogoku  district - the heart of  sumo wrestling  in Japan , with its green hexagonal-roofed Kokugikan Stadium, and, behind it, the excellent  Edo-Tokyo Museum . Futher down near the mouth of the river is the elegant, green oasis of  Hamarikyu Garden , which many ferries serve.  Odaiba , even further downriver where it meets Tokyo Bay, is a broad, spacious island offering various enjoyable ways to spend your time in Tokyo.

The  Sumida River Fireworks Festival  happens towards the end of July on the stretch of the river between Shirahige Bridge and Ryogoku Bridge. This is the biggest of Tokyo's fireworks festivals and is extremely popular with the locals. However, unless your idea of fun is hours waiting in a hot crush of people for a 90-minute display that, while spectacular, is an hour and a half of being tightly stuck in a dense crowd while bossy marshals' megaphones constantly blare, then it is best enjoyed from afar.

At the southern end of the park, beneath the Tobu-Isesaki railroad line, lies the Tokyo Mizumachi . In fine weather, you can even sit out in the open air, right on the water's edge, for a bite to eat or simply a cup of coffee. The canal-lined Kitajukken connects the Sumida and Kyunaka rivers, which in turn flows into the great Arakawa River. There are currently 13 stores, restaurants, cafés and even a youth hostel below the railway line. The Kontent design boutique is a must-see, as some of the products it sells cannot be found in other stores. For a good cup of coffee, it's worth stopping off at Deus Ex Machina Asakusa or Muya . Fans of Japanese sweets and desserts will be delighted at ichiya. For a hearty lunch or dinner, Shake Tree Diner, LAND_A and Jack's Wife Frida are three other stops offering Western cuisine. For those wishing to choose from a wider range of number of restaurants, nearby Solamachi, below the Tokyo Skytree, offers a vast choice.

Enjoy the river from a boat

Thanks to the many available  Sumida River pleasure cruises , the most easily accessed section of the river is from Asakusa southwards. The sightseeing highlights of the Sumida River are the Tokyo Skytree and the many bridges, varying in color and design, that span the Sumida. The Sumida River also provides easy access by sightseeing cruise boat to the shopping and amusements of the Toyosu district in Tokyo Bay.

Tokyo's River Walk: Sumida River full of great views & plenty to do

New York has the Hudson, Washington D.C. - the Potomac. London is highlighted by the Tames, while the Seine flows under the Paris sky.

Rivers form an important part of most large cities throughout history. In Japan, the Sumida River flows through Tokyo.

Aka Ookawa (literally, large river), this 15-mile long river, branching from the Arakawa River, runs in the eastern part of Tokyo, through Asakusa, Ryogoku, Nihonbashi, Tsukiji, and flows into Tokyo Bay. Not only is it a transportation route, the river also serves as a place of relaxation. From the banks, people enjoy the view throughout the four seasons - cherry blossoms in spring, fireworks in summer, full moon in autumn and snow falling in winter. Visitors can also cruise the river on a wooden boat called yakatabune.

The river has been a symbol of unique traditional culture of Tokyo and Edo (old name of Tokyo) throughout the ages. Kabuki, Ukiyo-e, Hanabi, Sumo and most of other traditional pop cultures were developed around the river.

With its first display in 1733, the longest running fireworks show in Japan continues along the river to this day. The show is enjoyed on the last Saturday of July, and has only been stopped for earthquakes or war.

While Kabuki offered a popular pastime for townspeople when a theater was built in Asakusa in 1841, many famous Ukiyo-e artists, such as Utagawa Hiroshige, Toshusai Sharaku and Kitagawa Hokusai created their art and lived near the river.

Although much of the area around the river was completely destroyed during the Allies’ air raids at the end of World War II (1939-45), remains of the Edo culture can be found on each corner of reconstructed streets, temples, arcades, shops, stalls and gardens along the river.

I often enjoy my riverside stroll from Azuma Bridge (Asakusa) through Ryogoku Bridge, after enjoying the center town of Asakusa. It is really fun of strolling along the river while indulging in thoughts of people who lived in the Edo era.

Situated on the left bank of river near Aduma Bridge, Asakusa provides the perfect place to start a Sumida River stroll.

I often begin my stroll at the Kaminarimon (thunder gate) of Sensoji Temple and walk through the long and narrow avenue called Nakamise-dori, which is surrounded by various food and souvenir shops. One treat offered is Ningyo-yaki, a tasty doll-shaped cake at Kimura-ya, one of the oldest shop in the avenue. Some of the shops, including Kimura-ya, have been run by the same families for more than 150 years.

Passing through another traditional wooden gate, Hozomon (treasure gate), the main hall of the temple appears in front of me with a five-story pagoda on my left.

Here, I stop at a huge bronze incense burner located in front of the main hall, and bathe my head in the smoke, which is believed to ward off illnesses and misfortune, while making you smarter and healthier.

After making a wish at Kannon (statue of Bodhisattva of Mercy) in the main hall, I usually go to a temple shop to pick an omikuji, a fortune slip to see if Bodhisattva has heard my wish. (See Omikuji story on the next page.) To do this, pick up a bamboo stick from a wooden container nearby and give it to a young lady in white kimono and red pants. Be sure to ask her for English-written slip, which will tell you the current condition of luck.

There are a lot of izakaya bars or teahouses around the temple. I often enjoy cold beer while watching various street performers, acrobats, jugglers and strolling musicians performing for tourists.

Along the Sumida River

After exiting the temple from its Nitenmon Gate, straight along the street is the Sumida Park. This area is filled with numerous cherry trees, and is known as one of the best hanami (cherry blossoms viewing) spots in Tokyo. The park offers a great location to take a photo of the river with the backdrop of the 2115-feet high Tokyo Skytree, as well.

From the park, I walk through a stone paved sidewalk, called “Sumida River Terrace.”

There are 16 bridges that cross over the Sumida River, each with a unique form and color. The distance between bridges is about a 5-10-minute walk, and it would take about 2 hours walk to the end.

I usually finish up my stroll around Ryogoku Bridge, where the Edo-Tokyo Museum and Kokugikan (sumo hall) are located.

In Edo-Tokyo Museum, you can scan the 400-year history of the capital city with various exhibits from the 590,000 collected items. Here you can compare the view of the Sumida River now as opposed to that of the Edo period. A fascinating ukiyo-e printing process with various woodblocks and drawings is also on display. (The museum is currently under renovation through 2025.)

In the Kokugikan, woodblock prints of sumo wrestlers, the aprons worn during the ring-entering ceremony, along with various calligraphies, pictures and works are on display. The hall holds grand sumo tournaments in January, May and September.

Another unique attraction is the waterbus at Hinode Pier, located at the corner of Sumida Park. The hour-long ride on the river costs 1,040 yen ($7.50), and travels to the Hamarikyu stop (Tsukiji).

Be sure to explore the Sumida River the next time you visit Tokyo. Much like a river meanders through a city, a walk along the Sumida is like a stroll through Japan’s long and storied history.

The Sumida River in Tokyo runs through the heart of the city . It runs into Tokyo Bay after branching off from the Arakawa River in Iwabuchi. The Kanda and Shakujii rivers are among its tributaries. It runs through the Tokyo wards of Kita, Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto, and Chuo.

Kiyosu Bridge

The Kiyosu Bridge offers an expansive and scenic view of the Sumida River, especially if you take a stroll along the bridge at night. The Kiyosu Bridge is just a short walk from the Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station. 

While the views from the Kiyosu Bridge are beautiful at any time of the day, the bridge does light up at night, creating a breathtaking experience and unique view of Tokyo .

Asahi Beer Hall

The Asahi Beer Hall along the Sumida River is one of the most fascinating pieces of architecture you will ever see. The building is modeled after a beer mug, with a signature gold structure at the top to symbolize beer froth. 

The building also houses the headquarters for Asahi Brewery, which produces popular Japanese beer and other products throughout Japan.

While the company has seen many changes over the years, it has been in existence since the late 1800s.

Tsukuda-Jima (Island)

The Tsukada-Jima Island is also known as the Island of Cultivated Rice Fields. This charming little town offers a lot of experiences that allow you to learn much more about Japanese culture.

Yanagi Bridge

This bridge overlooking Sumida River is also known as Willow Bridge or Yanagibashi Bridge. The area is so picturesque, it has been the inspiration for many popular Japanese works of art . 

The area offers more than just beautiful scenery, however. There are also shops and plenty of delicious dining experiences to be had. The bridge is also considered a historical site.

Komagata Bridge

This bridge, built almost 100 years ago, is distinct in that it’s all blue. The bridge was built after the Great Kanto Earthquake and was named after Komagata-do Hall, who was an esteemed member of the Senso-ji Temple . 

There’s a little area on the bridge where you can take a seat and take in all of your surroundings. You are also able to see a gorgeous view of the Sumida River, as well as some of the beautiful landscapes that Tokyo has to offer.

Eitai Bridge

This bridge has been a part of Tokyo for hundreds of years. You can either take a ferry ride below the bridge or take a stroll along the expansive bridge.

The bridge was originally built with timber, but unfortunately, it had collapsed in the 1800s and then was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake. 

When the bridge was rebuilt, it was made with blue steel, and the uniquely colorful bridge still stands sturdily today after seeing all that tragedy. It’s made even more beautiful at night when it lights up. 

Basho Shrine And Statue

Basho was a monumental figure of Japanese history , as he is the person who developed haiku poetry. He is also celebrated in Japan for his overall contributions to literature and art. The statue commemorates all that he contributed to Japan, and he is an interesting figure to learn more about.

Hama Rikyu Garden

Umaya Bridge

There are so many bridges around Sumida River, but there are none quite like the Umaya Bridge. The bridge features signature triple arches unlike any of the other bridges in the area.

The name translates to horse stable, and thus, there are many horse statues decorating the bridge. The reason for the name dates back to the Edo period, where there were horse stables in the area. 

You can take a stroll on the bridge and take in the surroundings, or travel underneath the bridge on a cruise down the river. It’s also a great vantage point if you are planning on visiting the Sumida River during the fireworks festival. 

Tokyo Skytree

The Tokyo Skytree is a massive structure and broadcasting tower that allows for some breathtaking views of Tokyo and the Sumida River. Additionally, there is also an opportunity for shopping and entertainment, as well as some delicious cuisine.

All You Need to Know About Japan’s Sumida River

The Sumida river is one of the most famous rivers in Japan, referenced heavily in Japanese pop culture and history and still a popular site for tourism today. The Sumida is one of Tokyo’s major rivers, branching off from the Arakawa river and flowing through the city for a distance of twenty-seven kilometers, passing through many of Tokyo’s famous wards and out into Tokyo bay. During the Edo period (1603 – 1868) the river was a major part of Tokyo life and often depicted in art and referenced in culture from the time. It still remains a major part of Tokyo today and a popular destination for many Tokyoites throughout the year. Along it’s winding banks lie many great places for sightseeing and activities and if you spend any time at all in Tokyo, you’re bound to come in contact with the river one way or another.

Sumida River in the Past and Today in Japan

The Sumida river is forever tied to Tokyo’s past, particularly the Edo period when the capital of Japan moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. Edo was originally a small fishing village but as it grew into a city, the area along the banks of the Sumida began to be developed. The Sumida river quickly grew to become one of Tokyo’s most important waterways. Tokyo itself is home to more than a hundred rivers, but the Sumida and its winding course through the heart of the city makes it one of its most prominent features. With trade goods constantly coming into Tokyo by sea, the rivers played an important part in transporting goods and people around the city, with the Sumida playing a huge role in this. The Sumida river’s place in Edo era history and culture is hugely evident in the number of works of art depicting it. Infamous woodblock prints by renowned artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, people of Edo era Tokyo can be seen enjoying the banks of the Sumida river in times of leisure. In The Bank of the Sumida River by Hiroshige for example, two women dressed in kimonos can be seen walking beneath the cherry blossoms. Hiroshige’s famous collection of woodblock prints, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo , contains many depictions of the Sumida river and the lives that the people of Tokyo during the Edo era lived along its banks. The Sumida was a prominent feature to Tokyo residents of that era and remains one even now.

Today, the Sumida river enjoys a similar role as an icon of Tokyo. A walk along its banks may not visibly show much of Tokyo’s history due to years of development but it is still home to many activities enjoyed by those during the Edo era. It holds many famous spots for cherry blossom viewing, is home to Japan’s oldest fireworks festival and its waters provide the routes for many kinds of boat cruises. Because so much of what Tokyo has to offer is located in close proximity to the banks of the Sumida River, there are many ways to explore Tokyo itself whilst exploring the river. And even if you don’t feel like doing anything particularly specific, there are many places to relax or do some people watching such as Sumida Park. Just as it has done throughout Japan’s history, the Sumida river offers a wealth of things to do.

Things to Know/Keep in Mind  Before Going to the Sumida River

As it runs for twenty-seven kilometers, the Sumida River is obviously a big place to visit. Before you go, you’ll definitely need to plan what you want to do beforehand. Not all of the river is suitable for sightseeing as it does flow through a number of industrial areas, but as you get closer to Tokyo bay, the number of Tokyo attractions located close to the river are mind-boggling. The Sumida flows through many of Tokyo’s major wards including Adachi, Arakawa, Sumida, Taito, Koto, and Chuo. If you plan on visiting a particular ward, it’s good to do some specific research on the area beforehand to see if it has something you’re looking for.

If you just want to take a stroll along the river, a great starting point is Sumida Park, a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in spring and a great viewing spot for the Sumidagawa fireworks festival if you happen to be there in late July. Sumida ward also has a large number of other attractions including Tokyo Tower, the Sumida Aquarium and the Sumo Museum.

Crossing over the bridge from Sumida park will take you into Tokyo’s famous historical Asakusa district where you can visit Sensoji temple and many other famous attractions in the area. Asakusa itself is also a great starting point, where you can spend a day visiting the many historical sights and finish up in the late afternoon with a pleasant walk along the riverbanks and the Sumida river promenade.

Of course, many events along the Sumida river such as cherry blossom viewing and the fireworks festival are seasonal, so if you really want to attend one of these, please check the dates before going. Otherwise, the river is a great place just to wander around and explore.

Things to Do at The Sumida River in Japan

Just like in the Edo period, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy your leisure time along the Sumida River. Sumida Park is one of many places to go but is a great starting point. Located in Sumida Ward in Tokyo, the park is situated on both banks of the river and is home to a huge number of cherry blossom trees. This makes the park very popular during cherry blossom season and a great destination for a picnic and a cherry blossom viewing party. It’s also a great spot to see the Sumidagawa fireworks festival. Taking place in late July, this fireworks festival is Japan’s oldest, and easily one of its most spectacular. It attracts over a million visitors each year.

There are many walking courses located along the river. These are great ways to get a good look at the Sumida river as well as visit places that you wouldn’t ordinarily see. You can plot your own walk but there is a great selection of walks available at Tokyo Walking Map . Under the list of water-side walks, there is a number that will take you along the Sumida River. I would particularly recommend the Sumida Walking map found here . Though focused on Sumida ward itself rather than the river, there are a number of walks found in this brochure that will take you along the river and through some interesting places to visit such as Ushijima shrine and Kyu Yasuda garden.

Of course, enjoying the river from just its banks isn’t really getting the full experience. There are numerous river cruises available traveling all along the Sumida River. Historically, boats have been available as more or less water buses, allowing people to travel to various parts of Tokyo along the river. Some of them still serve this purpose today to an extent, though more for tourists traveling around and seeing various parts of the city. The boats themselves have changed too, with some spectacularly futuristic-looking cruise ships running up and down the river, designed by famous manga artist Leiji Matsumoto, creator of Space Battleship Yamato. Aside from the daily routes, there are also more upscale river cruises run by different operators available, complete with dinner and drinks. These are, of course, more expensive and need to be booked in advance. For something a little out of the ordinary, traditional wooden Japanese tour boats called Yakatabune still run on the river. Yakatabune is large wooden barges that are said to date back as far as the Heian era. These boats were especially popular with rich aristocrats during the Edo era as they would cruise along the Sumida river for parties and sightseeing. The modern Yakatabune isn’t completely traditional, given that they offer some modern conveniences like heating and air conditioning but they do come very close to replicating that feeling of old Japan. Yakatabune cruises are run by a number of different operators and offer a wide range of different types of themed cruises, but most include a meal and drinks and are a great way to enjoy the river in a more traditional style. At night, the Yakatabune are often lit by traditional paper lanterns and make a stunning sight as the sail down the river. The Sumida River is also home to a number of historic bridges. Many of them are painted in distinct primary colours and are great gathering spots to get a good view of the river. The bridges are placed all along the river at intervals of approximately one kilometer. One of the more notable bridges is the Azumabashi bridge, a distinctive red bridge that crosses over the Sumida and connects Asakusa and Sumida wards. The bridge offers a great view of the Tokyo Skytree and is a popular spot for photos. The bridge was originally built in 1774 though the current structure was built in 1931. Another famous bridge is the Eitai-Bashi bridge. This long bridge was one of Tokyo’s earliest bridges and was quite long for the time, spanning about 200 meters. It has a slightly dark history in that it was the sight of a particularly notorious bridge collapse during the Edo period. The current arch-bridge is a lot sturdier, carrying both cars and pedestrians. It is illuminated a beautiful blue at night and is a popular spot for photography due to its views of the surrounding Tokyo skyscrapers. Sakurabashi bridge is another interesting bridge. Accessed by Sumida park, this four-way pedestrian bridge has an interesting shape and connects Sumida and Taito wards.

Aside from the river itself, there are many great attractions in Tokyo located along the river. Tokyo Skytree is located in Sumida ward close to the river so you can get a great view of it and the rest of the city from up high. Tokyo’s famous old-style Askakusa district is also right next to the river so you can visit its many attractions such as Sensoji temple. There are also a large number of parks and museums along the river. My favourite of these is the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Sumida ward which is dedicated to the Edo period and goes into great amounts of details about Tokyo’s history. And of course, as you follow the river out into Tokyo bay you will eventually come to Odaiba, the popular shopping and sightseeing destination, famous among other things for its lifesize Gundam statue.

The Sumida River is an integral part of Tokyo. Its proximity to many of Tokyo’s most popular destinations means it’s a place that most visitors come into contact with it one way or another. While on its own, it may not be the biggest tourist draw, it serves as a vital backdrop to the city itself and the way that people go about their daily lives. Aside from the many things to see and do in the proximity of the river, a stroll along its banks or a cruise along its path is a fantastic way to absorb the sights and sounds of Tokyo and to feel like you’re treading in the footsteps of those who lived in Edo so long ago.

Located on a bay and covered with a network of rivers and canals, Tokyo has a few boat services that tourists may find useful. The Water Bus (����o�X, Suijō Basu) can be an enjoyable alternative to trains or subways when traveling between destinations near the water.

The locations most notably convenient for water bus access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay, especially Odaiba . Many water buses also travel along the Sumida River, one of the city's most famous rivers. The many bridges that span the river have each a different design. Boats along the river provide access to Asakusa and Ryogoku .

The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain days.

Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa. The cost depends on the section traveled and is typically between 1000 and 2500 yen. Note that the company will turn cashless on May 8, 2024. Acceptable payment methods will be credit cards, IC cards and selected other digital payment systems.

Some other water bus lines are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. The Mizube Cruise Line travels from Asakusa on the Sumida River via Ryogoku to Odaiba . Only on selected days, service is also provided between Odaiba and Kasai Rinkai Park .

There are some other cruises available that include lunch or dinner for customers to enjoy a meal on the water. These cruises usually take about two hours and make a round trip that ends at the departure point. Prices depend on the meal and typically vary from 6,000 to 15,000 yen.

Getting there and around

Asakusa Pier The pier is located along the Sumida River, just beside the Asakusa Stations of the Ginza Subway Line and the Tobu Line or a five minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Asakusa Subway Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Asakusa page .

Odaiba Pier The pier is located just in front of the Aquacity Odaiba shopping mall, about a five minute walk from either Daiba Station or Odaiba-Kaihinkoen Station on the Yurikamome Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Odaiba page .

Hinode Pier The pier is a five minute walk north from Hinode Station on the Yurikamome Line, which can be accessed from Shimbashi Station (5 minutes, 260 yen, along the JR Yamanote Line ).

With the rising cost of everything, cruise fares – some even as low as $27 per person per night based on double occupancy – seem like an incredible bargain. And they certainly can be, but the fares you see advertised online often don't include extras like taxes, fees, port expenses, gratuities, shore excursions, specialty dining, alcoholic beverages, specialty coffees, room service fees and more.

Cruise pricing can be confusing with so many variables. Unless you're sailing with a smaller luxury line that is all-inclusive , your bill on the day of disembarkation may be unexpected or even shocking. Small things like buying bottled water or renting noodles for floating in the ocean at a cruise line's private island can add up quickly. To help you plan better for a cruise vacation , U.S. News has broken down some of the costs and add-ons you need to take into consideration before booking your next getaway on the high seas.

How much does a one-week cruise cost?

A cruise can cost anywhere from about $109 per person in an interior cabin for a four-night Bahamas cruise up to $101,199 per person for an entry-level suite on a 168-night world cruise – and anywhere in between. Cruise fares vary based on itinerary, number of nights, cabin type, amenities and cruise line. Here are a few examples of base cruise cost ranges on larger cruise lines for various regions:

• A seven-night Caribbean cruise in November ranges from approximately $270 to $2,600 per person.
• A seven-night Alaska cruise in May ranges from approximately $250 to $1,700 per person.
• A seven-night Mediterranean cruise in June ranges from approximately $620 to $2,300 per person.
• A seven-night Mexico cruise on the Pacific Coast in January ranges from approximately $470 to $700 per person.
• A seven-night Canada and New England cruise in October ranges from approximately $490 to $1,100 per person.

What's included in the base fare with a larger cruise line?

Mass market cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line , MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line – and more upscale lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line , Cunard Line , Disney Cruise Line and Princess Cruises – advertise "starting from" base fares, which are for inside cabins. These are the least expensive staterooms on the ship, and they do not have windows. Staying in these accommodations still gives you access to all the complimentary dining venues and several types of nonalcoholic beverages (such as nonbottled water, iced tea, juices, hot coffee and tea), as well as the ship's pools, gym facilities, kids clubs and onboard entertainment.

If you want a room with a view – or a larger stateroom – consider booking an ocean view room with a window, or a cabin with a balcony or veranda. With these rooms, you'll have access to all the ship's included amenities and typically more spacious accommodations for the week. Of course, this option will come at a higher price point.

No matter which room category you choose, port expenses, taxes and fees are not included in the base fares, and they're automatically added to the cost of your cruise. The amount of these charges will depend on the length of your cruise and where you're sailing. Gratuities for the staff and crew are also additional.

What if you want more amenities and perks?

For more perks, you can splurge on a suite or a higher room category. With Celebrity's Concierge Class, for example, you'll be treated to amenities such as a welcome lunch, a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine, personalized concierge service, an exclusive destination seminar, pillow selection upon request, laundry service and more.

With Disney Cruise Line's Concierge Staterooms and Suites, guests have a dedicated concierge agent offering personalized assistance for pre-arrival planning for port adventures, dining reservations, other onboard activities and special requests. You'll also get priority check-in and boarding, a private welcome reception, free Basic Surf Wi-Fi, access to a private lounge with complimentary food and beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) served throughout the day, and other perks.

You may opt to stay within an exclusive area of the ship, such as the MSC Yacht Club, The Haven by Norwegian or Celebrity's The Retreat. These high-end private retreats offer a mostly all-inclusive experience with additional features, while still including access to all the entertainment, dining venues and more on board. The accommodations can cost hundreds more dollars per day, but you'll have an experience similar to sailing on a small luxury vessel.

For example, the MSC Yacht Club offers an intimate all-inclusive space within its larger ships. The private area is accessible with a key card and features luxurious suites, a dedicated concierge, 24-hour butler service, a private restaurant and lounge, a secluded pool deck, priority reservations for specialty dining, VIP seating for entertainment, and other amenities. There are also additional dining and snack options throughout the day at the pool and lounge.

You'll find similar amenities in Norwegian's and Celebrity's private retreats, including priority boarding and disembarkation, exclusive sun deck areas, and priority access when boarding tenders for going ashore.

Guests of MSC's Yacht Club receive the line's Premium Extra Beverage Package, which covers premium liquors, fine wines and Champagne in the Yacht Club and at most other venues on the ship. Accommodations in The Retreat on Celebrity also include premium beverages throughout the ship. If you're staying in The Haven by Norwegian, a beverage package is not covered in the pricing, but Norwegian frequently advertises its "Free at Sea" package, which includes free unlimited bar, free specialty dining, complimentary Wi-Fi, discounts on excursions and other perks.

What factors determine pricing?

Base pricing and the additional components vary greatly among the cruise lines, so you'll need to determine what your budget is for the trip – and what you can and can't live without when it comes to accommodations and amenities. Travelers may also find that one cruise line has a deal or promotion with reduced pricing that covers airfare, specialty dining, a beverage package, free Wi-Fi or other perks in the advertised rate (such as the Norwegian package mentioned above), while another line isn't running any specials for a similar itinerary.

Voyages on older cruise ships tend to be less expensive, so if you're on a tight budget, consider a ship with fewer bells and whistles. If you're sailing on a short itinerary in the Bahamas and plan to lounge by the pool or on the beach all day, you may not be concerned about having high-tech onboard amenities, martini bars and several specialty restaurants.

Save the money to splurge on more expensive fares when you're planning to sail on longer voyages on larger and newer ships . You'll want several days at sea to enjoy the onboard amenities on some vessels, such as a three-level racetrack and a 10-story-tall slide on Norwegian Viva . It would take a full week (or more) to explore all the entertainment options aboard Royal Caribbean International's newest ship, Icon of the Seas – or all the new entertainment offerings and attractions on Princess Cruises' latest addition to its fleet: Sun Princess.

Another significant factor to consider is the time of year you want to travel. Better deals are available in the offseason, but the offseason varies depending on what part of the world you're traveling to. For example, May is a great time to find a deal in the Caribbean. The offseason – or shoulder season – in that market typically runs from May to November. However, keep in mind this period overlaps with hurricane season .

You also may be able to find last-minute deals in many other destinations if you're flexible. Working with a travel agent is an excellent way to learn of last-minute specials and cruise deals that offer add-ons like beverage packages, specialty dining inclusions, shore excursions and other perks. Solo travelers may pay more

If you're traveling alone, you may also need to factor in a single supplement, which can add up to as much as 100% of the cruise fare. To save money, bring a friend so you can access the lower double occupancy fare or consider lines that feature rooms for solo travelers; select Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity ships offer solo staterooms, as do other cruise lines. These smaller accommodations – typically ranging from around 100 to more than 200 square feet in size – are priced and designed for solo travelers. Key card access to Norwegian's Studio Lounge is included with the line's solo cabins and offers a place to relax and mix and mingle with other cruisers. Other lines that offer solo cabins include Holland America, MSC, Cunard and Virgin Voyages . While the price may not be as inexpensive as the double occupancy fare when traveling with someone else, these accommodations offer some savings over a typical solo fare.

Some lines often feature special deals on select sailings where the single supplement is waived or reduced. A knowledgeable travel agent specializing in cruises can assist in finding the best offers for solo travelers.

'Kids cruise free' promotions can help families save

If you're traveling with kids, many cruise lines – such as Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Disney and Princess – offer "kids sail free" promotions periodically throughout the year. You can also find discounted fares for children on select sailings.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises has fares as low as $999 for children 17 and younger on a variety of select voyages. Regent's regular fares typically start at around $3,600 per person for a seven-night cruise, so this is a significant savings. This fare also includes unlimited complimentary shore excursions and all the benefits and perks of sailing with an all-inclusive luxury cruise line. Regent even has a current promotion where kids sail free on a selection of seven- to 20-night itineraries in Europe and the U.K.

Food and beverages are another expense to consider

Once you determine your total cruise fare with the taxes, fees, port charges and gratuities, you'll need to budget for the additional expenses you'll have on the ship – and these extras can add up quickly. Meals at specialty dining venues, alcoholic drinks and other beverages may not be covered in the basic cruise fare. You'll also have to pay for room service on many ships.

You can purchase specialty dining, beverage and Wi-Fi packages before or during your cruise. These packages offer savings over purchasing everything individually – and it's best to buy them once you book your cruise, as they're typically cheaper to purchase before you board the ship.

For an example of the savings with a food package, Royal Caribbean offers up to a 40% discount with a dining package. This package includes reduced pricing for children ages 6 to 12, while kids 5 and younger eat for free. The cruise line's unlimited dining package also offers discounts on bottles of wine.

In addition to specialty dining venues that charge a flat fee – usually between $30 and $50 – there are also restaurants that charge as much as $135 or more for dinner, such as the adult venues on Disney Cruise Line's ships. Other restaurants feature a la carte menus with sushi, bar food and even steakhouses that price out individual courses. Some of these venues may not include gratuities, so that's another add-on. If you decide to dine at any of these spots – and they're not included in your package – you'll have to budget for them in the total cruise price.

Enticing dessert items in the gelato and ice cream shops on some ships also come with a price, including Coco's and Dolce Gelato on Norwegian or MSC's Venchi Gelati and Chocolate.

There are endless options when considering beverage packages, too, so you need choose what fits best with your interests and budget. Some of the package options are only for nonalcoholic drinks like fountain sodas, sparkling waters and coffees, while premium or deluxe beverage packages cover beer, wine and cocktails, so they are more expensive.

Depending on the cruise line, most premium packages will usually cover drinks up to $15, but many craft cocktails on cruise ships can be quite expensive, costing much more, especially if you request a specific brand for the liquor. If you have the premium package and want to splurge on the fancy beverage, you'll have to pay the difference.

It's important to know that there are a few select venues and bars on some ships that do not accept a beverage package, so you'll have to pay extra for drinks at those places. For example, MSC's ships have several signature venues that do not accept drink packages, such as Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Lavazza coffee shops and Venchi 1878.

Norwegian offers a package that covers top-shelf beverages and select bottles of wine and Champagne, Starbucks coffee, bottled water, soda, specialty drinks and other beverages. You'll need to budget around $138 per person per day for this option – and an additional 20% gratuity. This type of package can add up to quite a bit of money on a seven-day cruise or longer. Bundle pricing

For additional savings, look into bundle pricing that includes specialty dining, Wi-Fi, photos and more. Purchasing them together may be more cost-effective. For example, Holland America offers the "Have It All" package, which encompasses a $100 shore excursion credit, the Signature Beverage Package (including the service charge), one evening of specialty dining and the Surf Wi-Fi package for a six- to nine-day cruise. If you're sailing for 10 to 20 days or even longer, the benefits increase. The line estimates savings of 50% when you purchase this bundle.

While these packages may not always work out in your favor, you'll at least know what your dining, imbibing, excursions, Wi-Fi and even additional activities on the cruise will cost.

Additional costs on a cruise ship

Cruisers will also incur additional fees from excursions, fitness classes, spa treatments, access to thermal spa rooms, babysitting services, ship tours, wine tastings, cocktail demonstrations, cooking classes, laundry services, and some entertainment venues and activities on the ship. Examples include Norwegian's racetrack, Viva Speedway; high-tech attractions like the Robotron thrill ride and the XD cinema on MSC Seascape ; and Carnival's first roller coaster at sea, BOLT.

Wi-Fi access

If you need Wi-Fi during the cruise, that's another cost to factor into the total price. Here are two examples of pricing for internet plans for two cruise lines.

Carnival offers three options for Wi-Fi, using Starlink. The basic Social Wi-Fi Plan gives you access to certain social media channels like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and more, starting at about $15 per person per day. The cost increases to roughly $20 per person per day with the Value Wi-Fi Plan. This option gives you access to your email and to sites for weather, news, finance and more. It does not support Skype or music and video streaming services like Spotify and Netflix during your cruise.

The last option, Carnival's Premium Wi-Fi Plan, starts at around $19 per person per day and offers speeds up to three times faster than the Value plan. With this plan you can make Zoom calls and use Skype. For all three of these plans, you can save 15% off the total price if you book in advance of your trip.

Celebrity also uses Starlink. The line's "All Included" fare includes basic internet and a classic drink package, which the line says can save you potentially hundreds of dollars. If you don't book that fare, Wi-Fi plans range from around $20 per day for basic service to premium Wi-Fi at $35 per day.

• Shore excursions

If you're traveling to far-flung or new destinations, you'll want to book shore excursions. Cruise lines recommend that you book excursions directly with them rather than hiring an independent tour company or operator, but it can be more expensive to book tours through the cruise line.

However, if you experienced a delay on an independent tour and couldn't get back to the ship on time, there's a chance you could get left behind if you're not on a ship-sponsored tour. If you decide to go with a private tour guide, be sure to book an excursion that will allow you to arrive back at the ship with plenty of time to spare before the vessel departs for the next destination. Most tour operators in busy cruise ports work with the cruise ship schedules all the time, so you should be fine with a reputable independent guide.

Some trips last an entire day or are once-in-a-lifetime adventures like dog-sledding on a glacier in Alaska or taking a helicopter ride over the active volcanoes and waterfalls in Iceland. These types of excursions can be costly, ranging anywhere from hundreds to even thousands of dollars. If these types of experiences are not in your budget, look for historic walking or panoramic driving tours. These activities are shorter in duration and typically the least expensive tours available on the cruise. Many of these types of tours will cost less than $100. And, of course, there are always other options available that range between the lower and higher price range of excursions.

If your ship is docked directly in the town or city, then you'll be able to explore off the ship on your own for free. Some cruise lines also offer complimentary shuttle buses into town or a round-trip ride for a nominal fee if it's not within walking distance of the ship. That's another less expensive option for you to sightsee, shop or grab lunch in town.

Transportation

Transportation is another expense that's often overlooked in the total cost of a cruise. Consider if you'll be driving or flying to the cruise port. If you're driving, you'll have to pay for gas and parking at the port – and maybe a hotel the night before the cruise, depending on when you arrive and when your ship is scheduled to set sail. Don't forget the meals or beverages you'll purchase on the way.

If you're flying to the port, especially on a long-distance flight, it's best to come in a day early. In that case, you'll also have to pay for a hotel, transfers from the airport to the hotel and then a transfer (private hire, Uber or cab) to the ship's terminal. There will also be meals to budget for while you're in town before the cruise and a ride back to the airport after the cruise.

Souvenirs or forgotten items

Don't forget to account for purchases on the ship. Items that you forgot to bring from home will be more expensive on board. It's also easy to run up the bill when buying souvenirs for yourself or the kids. It's a good idea to periodically check your bill online or with guest services to see the current balance. You can keep a running tab of what you've billed to your stateroom – and also make sure that the charges are correct.

Cruise pricing checklist

To sum it up, here's a checklist of major items that will help you to compare costs across cruise lines and tally up the total cost of a cruise:

If you don't want to budget for all the individual expenses related to a cruise – and you don't need the over-the-top entertainment of a larger cruise ship – consider booking a mostly all-inclusive or fully all-inclusive cruise with a luxury cruise line . These cruise lines include almost everything in your cruise fare.

Mostly all-inclusive cruises

One option for a mostly all-inclusive cruise is Viking Ocean Cruises . The line's 12 all-veranda ocean-going vessels accommodate between 930 to 998 guests based on double occupancy – and all of Viking's ships feature the same categories of staterooms and suites, dining, lounges, and entertainment venues across the fleet. The ships offer an immersive cultural curriculum on board with regional dishes, destination performances and enrichment lectures.

Viking's fares include veranda accommodations, port taxes and fees, free Wi-Fi, access to the spa and fitness center, 24-hour room service, ground transportation (if you book airfare with Viking), and one complimentary excursion in each port. If you're interested in an even smaller ship – and are sailing to the Caribbean or Mediterranean – SeaDream Yacht Club features an intimate luxury experience on its two 56-stateroom yachts. The fares include top-notch cuisine, an open bar, gratuities, complimentary daily yoga, access to water sports and movies under the stars.

How much does a luxury cruise cost for two?

If you want to go on a mostly adults-only luxury ship, what can you expect to pay for two people? This will depend on the ship, where you want to sail and for how long – and what amenities are included in the fare.

For a seven-night cruise in the Caribbean in December 2024 round-trip from Miami with Regent Seven Seas, an all-inclusive cruise fare with suite accommodations starts at $7,398 ($3,699 per person). There are additional perks and savings available, depending on the level of accommodations you book and if you combine this cruise with another voyage. You can also check with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see if they have access to other promotions.

For a Silversea cruise in December 2025 that sails round-trip from Bridgetown, Barbados, the all-inclusive port-to-port cruise fare starts at $9,800 for two people ($4,900 per person) in suite accommodations. Contact a travel agent before booking to see if they can offer upgrades or additional amenities.

While the price tag may seem high, compare the total cost with the base fare on a larger cruise ship and then add in all the extras.

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded.
