Student travel programs are exactly like what they sound like...young students can sign up for a program to take them across all corners of the world! Most have some type of educational component, such as language immersion if it’s somewhere with a different language or a cultural class to engage students more, but the focus is on traveling and exploring. Because meaningful travel has become so popular, there are student travel programs for high school students that focus on one specific country and there are others that take students to multiple countries. Whatever your preference, there’s a program out there for you!

Who can do student travel programs.

Students, of course! Namely, YOU. Whether you’re currently in high school or looking to take a gap year in between high school and college , there are tons of options! Most student travel programs for high school students require that you are enrolled somewhere and have above a 2.5 GPA, but the requirements are pretty lax besides that. Depending on the specific provider and location, there may be language requirements or courses that need to be completed before departure, so check each program carefully!

Just like the name of the program suggests, The Experiment in International Living is an experiential international learning provider for high schoolers. The Experiment provides three to five week summer trips for students to become immersed in a new culture, pick up some foreign language skills, and explore a diverse region through hands-on experiences with the local community. The Experiment has been a high school study abroad leader for over 85 years, and each of their 32 programs in 26 countries around the world offers a specific theme for students to learn through. 4. American Farm School

Get ready to get down and dirty with some farm animals! (No, not really…) Since 1904, the American Farm School has focused on the agricultural needs of Greece and the Balkans, and in 1970 created the Greek Summer Program. High school students spend a summer living with a family in a rural Greek village, and learn about the importance of agriculture and social issues related to refugees through hands-on experiences. The highlight of the summer is the “Big Trip”, where students participate in an eco-adventure like hiking Mt. Olympus and sailing through island communities and spectacular bays. Sounds much better than studying for the SATs!

Student Trips

Trips are customized and operated by USA Student Tour exclusively for Student Management Group (SMG), International Student Exchange (ISE) and Cultural Academic Student Exchange (CASE) students. All trips are accompanied by ISE, SMG and CASE chaperones with professional tour guides. For flight reservations, suggest flight research using expedia.com  or other travel websites but make reservations directly from selected airlines’ website. We also suggest asking your host parents for flight recommendations.

To Make a reservation: 1) Download the Authorization Form from the trip page and get it signed by your natural parents, host family, school, and your representative. Please turn in signed form within 15 days from making reservation.

2) Review trip itinerary, reservation terms & conditions and deadline. Please note that airfare is not included in all trips. Students are responsible for booking flights on own. We suggest asking host parents for flight recommendations. Most discounted airfares are available through airline websites. Prior to booking your flight, please review trip itinerary for required arrival and departure times. Students cannot arrive earlier than trip departure dates. Reservations for students arriving earlier than trip departure date will be cancelled but full refund will be provided.

3) Under Tour Calendar, select your desired trip and enter the program code provided by your program. Without program code, trip reservation cannot be completed.  For an individual student, double occupancy reservation is accepted. When making double occupancy reservation, please enter your name only and check off  FIND ME A ROOMMATE box to make reservation/payment for one student.

For quad and triple occupancy reservations, roommates must be pre-arranged by students prior to making reservations. If students have pre-arranged roommates  and wanting to make individual triple or quad occupancy reservations, please email us roommate names to [email protected] .  Once we receive email with roommate names, we will send reservation code for individual reservation for triple or quad occupancy reservation. If one student is paying for all triple or quad occupany reservations, roommate email is not required.

A little more about si.

SI is dedicated to connecting short term mission trip seekers with missionaries who are already working full-time in the international mission field. Our goal is to connect those seeking short-term missions opportunities and those serving on the front lines on a permanent basis.

SI missionaries know the people, culture, and specific needs of the local community, and they’re connected to the local church where their ministry site is located.

We serve students of all ages (including adults) from the United States and from Canada.  Groups that are sure to be a good fit are Church Youth Groups, Church Adult Teams, Campus ministries like Intervarsity or Cru, Christian High Schools, Christian Colleges.

International Mission Trips

Students International offers many types of ministry sites, and they vary by country.  Medical Missions, sports ministry, pre-schools, social work, microfinance, and agriculture are just a few examples of where a student can work.

Trips are typically 9 days or 13 days. But we also have longer options like summer staff, internships, study abroad and semester programs, and Global Bridge, our gap year program.  Our busy season starts in March with spring break and we have teams throughout the summer and in the fall or winter.

At Students International, we understand that short term mission trips can be both rewarding and challenging. Business students share stories from Spring Break trips abroad

Students return from Czech Republic, Switzerland, Vietnam with broadened horizons

The College of Business Administration offers a wide range of short-term study abroad options over Spring Break. From undergraduate and MBA students visiting the Czech Republic to commercial banking students spending time in Switzerland, Marquette Business makes it possible to get an international education without the semester-long commitment.    Our students were eager to share insights from the trips they took:

HARPER STOPPACHER – CZECH REPUBLIC Junior majoring in marketing, economics and international business 

Traveling to the Czech Republic for the Spring Break Study Abroad program was an unforgettable experience that made me a more well-rounded business professional. I was paired with a Czech student to compare marketing in America versus the Czech Republic as part of the work and I quickly learned that Czech feedback is more direct than in the U.S. and that Czechs are very prompt. Every time we visited a company like AimTec in Pilsen or toured a unique historic city like Karlovy Vary, our group was expected to be ready to go at the scheduled time. The professionals we met with and our tour guides were also very careful to stay within their allotted times. 

It was also interesting to be in a country that exports more than they import. Skoda is a huge car brand that makes up a large portion of Czech exports. Nearly everyone in the Czech Republic drives a Skoda and has some connection to the company’s manufacturing. This gave me a new perspective on business that I will keep in mind as I enter the professional world. 

JONATHON SLAYTON – CZECH REPUBLIC Master of Business Administration candidate

Overall, our trip to Pilsen and Prague was a great experience; in fact, I think it’s one of my top experiences with Marquette. After visiting, I can see now why Marquette and the University of West Bohemia have had such a long partnership. We have a shared culture and passion for beer!

I really enjoyed the soccer match that we went to. The game went to overtime and then penalty kicks. That was so much fun to attend. I also enjoyed hearing a lecture on the future of business and artificial intelligence at our partner university’s satellite campus in Cheb, another small town. Overall, the trip has made me a more well-rounded individual and professional. Being exposed to other cultures and ways of doing business always expands your perspective and allows you to reflect on your own experiences more. I encourage every Marquette student to consider a study abroad experience.

ABBY MILATZ – CZECH REPUBLIC Junior majoring in accounting

The trip to the Czech Republic allowed me to deepen my understanding of international business practices and Czech culture. On the trip, we were able to tour multiple businesses that are essential to the Czech economy. I loved touring the Pilsner Urqell and Becherovka facilities, as they are important to the economy and identities of Pilsen and Karlovy Vary, respectively. I found it interesting to learn about how Cold War policies affected business operations too. In addition to the business tours, the helpfulness of the Czech students and teachers greatly added to my experience. They were so willing to show us local spots in the cities, explain the differences between their university and ours, and immerse us in the culture. Overall, this trip allowed me to meaningfully compare a European economy against our own through real-life experiences.

CAM HEISER – SWITZERLAND Senior majoring in human resources, accounting and finance

The study abroad trip to Switzerland over spring break was an eye-opening experience. The company visits and cultural exploration activities allowed me to develop a deeper understanding of the work environment overseas. One of the best experiences was being able to see the vault at multinational bank UBS. We were able to get an inside look at how clients can store valuables and the many options they have for safe deposit boxes or even safe deposit rooms.

Another amazing experience was being able to travel across Switzerland on our free day. With a group of three others, I went from Zurich to Bern to Geneva to Lausanne, and then right back to Zurich. Throughout that day, we saw amazing sights like the United Nations building and the fountain in Geneva. Overall, I would recommend this trip to anyone interested in learning more about Switzerland and the banking sector.

GARRETT BUTLER – SWITZERLAND Junior majoring in finance and business analytics

Over Spring Break, I decided to go to Zurich, Switzerland with the commercial banking program. We visited a lot of cool companies like UBS, Victorinox, SNB, Lindt and more. I didn’t know anyone in my group going into the trip, but we became friends by the end and that was really cool.

The major thing that stood out to me about this trip is the cultural barrier. In Switzerland, we had to adapt very quickly to function in a country that didn’t speak a lot of English and had a completely different way of living. This will help me when it comes to trying new things and adapting to different experiences within the workforce. This trip also pushed me outside my comfort zone to talk to strangers when I was trying to get somewhere or understand something. I believe this will greatly aid my communications skills.

RYAN SOHN – VIETNAM

This trip impacted my Marquette University journey both academically and socially. In my studies, I want to continue learning about different aspects of Vietnam, especially with regards to the business world. I can do this by keeping up with current events in Vietnam and learning how their economy continues to grow. Socially, I have made good friends on the trip I would not have found on my own.

From touring aluminum factories to experiencing the Chu Chi Tunnels, the Marquette University and HUTECH students were able to have fun, lasting memories with each other. We all got to spend time outside the classroom together, where the HUTECH students showed us tasty restaurants and bustling marketplaces.

It was phenomenal working with students from all different majors and discussing our perspectives on the world. I have already talked to many of the Marquette University students on campus and connected to the HUTECH students through social media, and I can not wait to see where our lives go.

FARMINGTON — Having an international experience is a valuable tool in a student’s career readiness—and with the University of Maine at Farmington Virtual Global Experience program, students can travel globally without leaving home.

UMF recently hosted an international conference of scholars with more than 30 participants hailing from nine countries and five continents, including Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and North America. The scholars, associated with UMF’s Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiative, gathered to discuss their participation in UMF’s Virtual Global Experiences program, designed to enhance undergraduate students’ global experiences and competencies across all disciplines.

“The purpose of UMF’s Global Classrooms initiative is to expand the number of UMF students to have access to a global experience during their undergraduate career at UMF,” according to Dr. Linda Beck, the Associate Dean of Experiential & Global Education and principal investigator for the grant.

“With approximately 50% of our student body receiving Pell Grants, many of them are unable or cannot even imagine studying abroad. The Virtual Global Experience program ensures that all UMF students have the opportunity for sustained interactions and friendships, even with students in other countries. Based on these experiences, many of these students decide to participate in our travel courses, study abroad or take other international studies courses while at UMF,” said Beck.

In 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began to shut down opportunities for study abroad, UMF received an Undergraduate International Studies & Foreign Language grant from the United States Department of Education. Under its Global Classrooms project, UMF began training faculty and staff to develop COIL modules that could be incorporated into existing courses, permitting faculty and students to collaborate with counterparts worldwide.

In Spring 2021, Professor Matt McCourt offered his geography students a virtual experience with students in Le Mans, France, while Professor Nicole Kellett had her anthropology students work on a comparative analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on our daily lives with students in Peru. A third VGE pilot was conducted by Professor Carole Lee, whose students created science lesson plans with students at the Education University of Hong Kong. Advertisement

Since this initial pilot, UMF professors and students have conducted VGE modules in 17 courses within nine different disciplines alongside 12 international partners in Cyprus, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Peru, Senegal, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as a Tribal College in Montana.

This semester, UMF has begun a new program combining virtual modules with student mobility. Professor Steve Pane of the UMF Music program has collaborated with colleagues from two music conservatories in Pescara and Venice, Italy. The three professors had their first VGE exchange in Fall 2022, and this spring culminated their virtual exchange with seven conservancy students who performed collaboratively with UMF students on March 22. Professors Cecilia Franchini and Stefania Franchini, who have been at residence at UMF as Libra scholars, opened the VGE conference with a faculty performance on March 28.

Another group of UMF students is participating in a global seminar that includes a VGE with Le Mans students and will culminate with fieldwork in France. A group of Le Mans students will then travel to Maine. UMF plans to hold similar global seminars that combine virtual exchanges with actual student travel to China and Senegal next academic year.

Last week’s conference included 10 presentations by 19 faculty members, all but three of whom could travel to UMF for the event. The others joined via Zoom in the true spirit of virtual exchanges. In addition, Professor Erin Fernandez Mommer of Greenville River College in Washington State gave a keynote address on the COIL Network set up in the Pacific Northwest that can serve as a model for expanding virtual exchanges to include other universities and community colleges in Maine.

In their presentations, professors shared the type of projects their students worked on collaboratively with their international classmates, the challenges they had to overcome and the impact these experiences had on their students.

One UMF student who participated in the exchange with UMF’s partner in Alicante, Spain, noted, “I feel more confident in interacting with people from a different culture. I have not had much opportunity to talk to people outside of Maine, so I was nervous. But now I am far less nervous and interested in seeking out more opportunities.”

Another UMF student who went on to do her student teaching at UMF’s partner in Daegu, South Korea, observed that having their peers in Hong Kong share their experience with teaching methods, “helped me truly understand what it will be like when I begin teaching in South Korea. It even made me realize that I have to adjust my own ideas of how I can embrace their cultural learning norms while still incorporating aspects of U.S. teaching.”

As a recipient of a second UISFL grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2023, UMF will be able to continue to grow its Global Classrooms program with increased emphasis on students in natural science and education majors who are less likely to fit study abroad into their curriculum.

#SchellerAbroad: Georgia Tech MBAs Travel to Singapore, Czechia, and the Nordics

Full-time and Evening MBA students spent spring break immersing themselves in Singaporean culture and meeting with their international clients.

Over spring break, Georgia Tech MBA students departed from the usual holiday plans and embarked on journeys to Singapore, Czechia, and the Nordics to tackle business challenges specific to each region and learn from local stakeholders. Along the way , they were able to dive into each area’s distinctive culture.  

As an integral component of the MBA International Practicum course, Full-time and Evening MBA students undertook consulting projects for international clients, traveling overseas to engage with them firsthand and explore new perspectives before returning to Scheller to finalize their projects. Join us as we hear from seven MBA students describe their transformative experiences abroad.  

Peter Chen, Evening MBA ‘25  

“The Singapore International Practicum course aligned with my personal, academic, and professional objectives. Growing up in Taiwan has given me a deep appreciation for Singapore's significant role in the Asian business landscape.  

From an educational perspective, this program seamlessly integrated with my Evening MBA coursework, providing an invaluable opportunity for hands-on business experience. I participated in a project with Castlery, a furniture company, and we explored the potential of entering the Atlanta market, which offered a rich learning experience.  

Overall, this program served as a crucial link connecting my educational endeavors, cultural background, and professional aspirations. It afforded me the opportunity for international consulting experience, expanded my worldview, and furthered my career development.”

Tax Reporting

Procedures for payments made to or on behalf of international students, visitors and vendors, general information.

All payments made to or on behalf of an international visitor, student or supplier have potential tax considerations requiring special attention. Additional processing time is required for transactions involving foreign visitors, vendors and students.

It is recommended to contact Tax Reporting at [email protected] prior to processing payments to international taxpayers.

Types of Payments Requiring Special Attention

Examples of payments to foreign visitors, students and suppliers requiring special handling include but are not limited to:

• Stipends and fellowships
• Payments for services
• Travel payments for international visitors
• Travel payments for international students
• Payments for software
• Royalty payments
• Payments to U.S. agents representing international performers
• Payments to foreign agents or performers
• P-Card payments to international companies

All payments made to or on behalf of international students and visitors must comply with regulations established by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

Note: The University may be unable to make a payment (including expense reimbursements) to an international visitor if their visa does not allow such payments.

The information contained in this document applies to individuals classified by the USCIS as other than U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card holders).

It is critical to determine if the visa classification and other circumstances related to the international visitor allow for payment of any kind. Do not pre-pay travel expenses for international visitors using a P-card or direct payment without prior approval from Tax Reporting. Most travel payments for international visitors must be processed as expense reimbursements because verification of valid visa status and legal entry in the U.S. cannot be confirmed until after the visitor enters the country.

Note: Individuals cannot pay international visitors with personal funds and then request reimbursement from the University.

Documentation Required

Travel reimbursements and honorarium payments – international visitors.

Visitors must be eligible to receive travel reimbursements based on visa status. Visitors should enter the U.S. in a business status, not tourist status. Please instruct your visitor of the business visit requirement. Departments should provide the visitor with a letter of invitation that includes a business purpose for the trip. Travel reimbursements must conform to the Boise State travel policy to be exempt from tax reporting and withholding.

The following visitor documentation must be obtained prior to the international visitor’s departure from Boise State:

• Copy of Passport (with picture)
• Copy of Passport stamp showing admittance and departure date for Boise State visit
• Copy of Visa – where applicable
• An I-94 is required for all visitors
• I-94 Official Website
• Individuals who are present in the U.S. in a status other than Visa Waiver or B1/B2 may be required to present additional documents.
• Completion of PaymentWorks record

Important information for Honorarium Payments

Visitor must be eligible to receive honorarium payments based on visa status and American Competitiveness and Workforce Improvement Act (ACWIA) of 1998 requirements. The ACWIA requirements are:

• Visitor must be present under a B-1 visa or WB waiver for business
• Payment must be for “usual academic activity” defined as lecturing, teaching, sharing knowledge, attending meetings of boards or committees
• Activity must last no longer than 9 days at a single institution
• Individual may not accept honoraria from more than five institutions within a six- month period

Please confirm with your visitor that they are able to meet the ACWIA requirements prior to committing to an honorarium payment.

All payments of honorarium require tax reporting and potentially tax withholding. Boise State uses a third-party database called Sprintax Calculus for tax reporting purposes. Individuals who receive honorarium payments will be required to complete a Sprintax Calculus tax record and sign all applicable tax forms.

Sprintax Calculus

The following individuals require a Sprintax Calculus record.

• All international visitors who receive honorarium payments, fee for service or taxable travel payments
• International students who receive taxable travel, scholarship, or fellowship payments
• All international employees

Sprintax Calculus is an online tax compliance software used to make tax residency and income tax treaty determinations. Payments will not be made before the Sprintax Calculus record for the individual is completed.

How to set up a Sprintax Calculus Record

• Email [email protected]
• Include visitor name and email address
• If payment is made to a Boise State student, provide name and student ID number
• The student/visitor will receive an email request from [email protected] with log in information and instructions to complete the record
• The visitor completes the record, and e-signs the tax forms
• The individual also needs to let the Tax Reporting know once complete, so the forms and the record can be reviewed

Generally, the following types of payments to international students, visitors and suppliers will have tax withheld:

• Fees for service and honorariums when activity is conducted in the U.S. – subject to 30% tax withholding
• Travel expense reimbursements that do not conform to Boise State travel policy – subject to 30% tax withholding
• Performance fees paid to third parties (U.S. or foreign) representing international individuals/groups – subject to 30% tax withholding
• Scholarship payments – are subject to 14% tax withholding for international students under F, J, M or Q status; 30% tax withholding for international visitors or students under all other visa categories
• Payments for license agreements (software, access to data, etc.) – subject to up to 30% tax withholding
• Payments for online services, if service performed inside the U.S. or supplier’s server is located in the U.S. – subject to 30% tax withholding
• Royalty payments (for use of artwork, music or other copyrighted material) – subject to up to 30% tax withholding
• Prizes or awards (cash and non-cash, no de minimus amount) – subject to 30% tax withholding

Additional Information

Payments to foreign suppliers.

A W-8 (there are several types of W-8s) form is required for all foreign suppliers. Do not request the Vendor Information Form (VIF) from a foreign vendor. You will need to send the foreign vendor/individual an invitation to PaymentWorks and submit the payment request as an invoice payment into Bronco Hub .

Payments to Third Party Vendors

Payments to third party vendors (i.e. airline, hotel, conference vendors) on an international student or visitor’s behalf are considered a payment directly to the international student or visitor. Immigration documentation from the visitor is required and must be obtained prior to payment. On rare occasions, third party payments may be made on a student or visitor’s behalf. These payments must be approved by the Tax Reporting department prior to making a payment. Please contact [email protected] .

Job Candidates

International individuals who enter the United States for the purpose of a job interview may be reimbursed for expenses. There will be no tax withholding or reporting as long as no services to Boise State University are performed by the candidate during their visit. Expenses must also comply with Boise State travel policy and the payment request (along with all supporting documentation) must be submitted within 60 days of the end of the visit.

Travel Expenses – International Students

Paying for international student travel expenses may be considered a taxable payment to the student. The purpose of the travel will determine whether the payment is subject to tax. Prior to making any payment, the department needs to email [email protected] with all the details and information so we can make an informed decision.

Departments paying travel expenses for student employees where the travel is directly related to the student’s job duties, the payment is a business expense and is not subject to nonresident alien taxes. The financial support for the travel needs to have a legitimate and work-related business purpose. The following criteria needs to be met to be considered a legitimate business expense.

• The student must be employed as a graduate assistant or a student employee at Boise State University
• The travel must be a job requirement, primarily for the benefit of the University
• The student must be working on a grant contract and
• The student’s participation should include activities such as submittal and/or presentation of a research paper, participation in round table discussions or sharing knowledge or technology by other means.

If the student’s participation primarily benefits the student (e.g., the student attends the conference to learn/to be trained for his/her own study or research), the payment or reimbursement of expenses is treated as a taxable scholarship payment to the student. If the payment is determined to be a scholarship, the student will be required to complete a Calculus record. The record must be completed prior to any travel expenses being paid directly to the student or paid on behalf of the student (i.e. direct payment or P-Card payment). If it is applicable, tax charge will be applied at the student’s account.

P-Card Payments to Foreign Vendors

Payments to a foreign vendor using a P-Card may incur additional tax charged to the department. The nature and location of the transaction will determine the tax reporting and withholding requirements. Ideally, a W-8BEN-E form should be obtained from the entity prior to making a P-Card payment to a foreign vendor. Forms should be sent to Tax Reporting who will determine tax withholding requirements. Departments who make a taxable payment using the P-Card will be charged an additional 43% to cover tax withholding and interest.

The International Studies major focuses on world affairs with a special emphasis on philosophy, economics, and culture. Courses in this major focus on both general topics (such as conflict, globalization, terrorism, human rights) and area or country studies (the Middle East, Russia, China, Japan, Latin America). Unlike most other degree programs, the International Studies major allows students the flexibility to earn credit towards their major by taking some selected courses from other departments to provide a broader international perspective. Graduates from this major are well poised for a wide range of careers in both the public and private sector. Recent graduates have pursued careers in government, business, or non-government organizations that have an international or global focus.

Wargames Charge Students and Experts with Handling a Complex Geopolitical Crisis

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Manage an international crisis that threatens to launch China and the U.S. into nuclear war—with emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence, potentially creating new risks of escalation.

That’s not the typical email that lands in graduate students’ inboxes. 

But so it went for several Institute students who just so happen to study things like AI, nuclear nonproliferation, and international relationships (in general) and China (in particular).

“As an expert in national security, your participation is key to the success of this simulation and research project and, ultimately, to the success of efforts to create policies, capabilities, and legislation that ensures international stability and minimizes the risks associated with interstate conflict,” the email read. 

Decker Eveleth, who is completing his master’s degree in  nonproliferation and terrorism studies , was among those who accepted the invite. 

“We do have a lot of interesting opportunities here at Middlebury,” he said.

About 25 people participated in the daylong exercise hosted on the Institute campus, which was co-sponsored by the Institute’s Cyber Collaborative and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies . Participants were given a hypothetical high-stakes scenario—involving China posturing to attack Taiwan—and a briefing on relevant capabilities and threats. Then they formed teams to develop a response plan. 

Jacquelyn Schneider with the  Hoover Institution led the exercise with the project’s director,  Harold Trinkunas , the senior research scholar at the  Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies . 

Schneider served as an Air Force officer in Korea and Japan and is the director of the Hoover Institute’s  Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative . Much of her work zeroes in on the intersection of technology, national security, and political psychology—with plenty of cybersecurity, autonomous technologies, wargames, and Northeast Asia elements as well. 

“We came to Middlebury because we knew there is a concentration of students who are top-notch, in a community with a lot of people who work in international security,” she said.

Experts deep into their careers also joined the games, including  Erik J. Dahl , associate professor at the  Naval Postgraduate School , just up the road from the Institute.

“War games and other practical exercises provide a great opportunity for graduate students to put into practice what they are learning and also to meet outside scholars and practitioners whom they might not otherwise get to work with,” he said. “The benefit for the MIIS students is both short term, because it helps make what they learn in their courses come alive, but also in the longer term, because they can make contacts and develop skills they’ll be using later on in their professional lives. 

It’s an incredible way to learn about how everything in a complex situation can best be managed. It’s not using the wargame as a predictive tool, but making people think about the factors that matter most when a crisis really comes.  

Professor Sharad Joshi , who teaches global politics and security at the Institute, also joined in. He emphasized how practical the exercise proved. 

“It’s not something we are dreaming up out of the blue,” he said. “A slow burn in relations [with China] has been taking place over the last three or four years, so this is as real world as it gets.”

Many Institute students may go on to face real scenarios in their careers that are not that different from those they practice in the games. Nearly half go into jobs in the government or at intergovernmental organizations, with many at private companies or NGOs that work at the intersection of complex public-private security issues.

The simulation discussions proved robust, with participants surfacing both practical and profound questions: 

How do you address the use of a technology that some policymakers don’t understand? 

What are the best ways to prioritize diplomacy, sanctions, and cyber warfare?

Why are rules of engagement important for both humans and robots? 

“Even if AI is more accurate,” one participant interjected, “I still want a human to deploy a weapon so I have someone to hold accountable.”

As the exercise unfolded, Middlebury students drew plenty of insights applicable to their future global security careers.

Eveleth reflected, “It’s an incredible way to learn about how everything in a complex situation can best be managed. It’s not using the wargame as a predictive tool, but making people think about the factors that matter most when a crisis really comes.”
