Iritty River

Iritty , also known as the “Coorg Valley” is one of the most beautiful hill side towns in the district of Kannur, north Malabar in the state of Kerala, India. Iritty is the main market place for the agricultural population in the near villages. Cultivation of cash crops such as cashew nuts, pepper and rubber are done here. Iritty is one of the fast developing towns in Kerala and top among four taluks in Kannur district, attracting a descent numbers of tourists.

The unique rivers, green hills, streams and valleys in the region makes this place much beautiful site. Iritty, popularly known as the land of two rivers. Earlier the name ‘Iritty,’ made the first cry, this place was nurtured by two prime rivers, Bavalipuzha and Barapuzha. Locales regarded both the rivers conflux as Iratta (Double) puzha (River), and in the later days till date, the place became well known as Iritty. River Bavali, Aralam and Veni are the three main streams of Iritty river.

Bavali River: The Bavali river, initiates from the northern slopes of Brahmagiri forests of Karnataka and Ambayathode after flowing 20 km. It flows ahead through the Kottiyur Reserve forest and Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary. (A similar named river Bavali can be found in the Waynad district). Chekuthan thode from Valad in Waynad, merges with Sreelankan thode and becomes Ambayathode, and later joins with Bavali.

Aralam River: From Kottappuram mala in Karnataka, the Aralam river starts and flows about 20 km through Aralam Wild Life sanctuary to reach Ayyappankavu, where Aralam River joins Bavali. The Iritty river becomes the wider and deeper, when Aralam river meets Bavali.

Veni River (Barapuzha): Veni river (Barapuzha – Vallithode river) is one the major stream of Iritty river, which originates from Makkuttam – forest and one stream heads from Karnataka forest through Peratta that merges at Koottupuzha to emerge as Vallithode river. At Vattiyara near Iritty, Veni river meets Aralam – Bavali river. From this conflux, they move 8 km towards west to reach the Kuyilur Barrage of Pazhassi Dam (Pazhassi-Irrigation Project) and flows non-stop during monsoon.

Iritty, is well connected to both Kannur and Thalassery and other major cities across Kerala and is easily accessible via roads. There are frequent bus services in this region. An interstate highway passes through Iritty linking Thalassery and Kodagu. There is no railway line in the town and the nearest railway stations are at Kannur and Thalassery.

Places to visit:

Steel Girder Bridge:

Iritty Bridge

The British has constructed many bridges in the region primarily for their timber transportation from the Coorg forest to Tellichery port. The Iritty steel bridge was built on two pillars with three spans and weighs about 10 ton, constructed by the British in 1933 to connect the towns of Kodagu and Thalassery. This engineering marvel is equipped with an excellent vibration reduction mechanism. The bridge was designed and constructed by Mr. E. H. Stewart and his team of engineers during the British era.

Pazhassi Dam:

Pazhassi Dam

Almost 10 km from Iritty, is the Pazhassi Dam, well known as the major tourist attraction in Iritty. The dam was built across Valapattanam river, near Kuyiloor (Kuyiloor puzha) primarily for the irrigational and drinking purposes. Boating facilities are provided by the Kannur District Promotion Council to navigate through the river, enjoying the scenic beauty of Pazhassi Dam. Being near to the birth place of the King ‘Pazhassi Raja’ the dam got its name as Pazhassi Dam. It is the only reservoir with gardens in Kannur district. The gardens and the children’s park are the most entertaining sites around. The sculpture of King Pazhassi and the Buddha’s mountain at Pazhassi are noteworthy. This project was commissioned, in 1979, by the Ex. Prime Minister, Late: Mr. Morarji Desai.

Iritty, located in the Kannur district of Kerala State, India, is both a Municipality and a Taluk. It serves as the primary marketplace for farmers in the surrounding areas and is often referred to as The Coorg Valley in God’s Own Country. Positioned at a distance of 20 km (12 mi) from Kannur International Airport, Iritty is one of the five taluks in the Kannur district. It is also a significant town that lies between Coorg and Kannur International Airport – Mattanur.

Iritty is positioned alongside the Bavali river, which has its source in the Wayanad passes. It is located on State Highway 30 (Kerala), also known as the Thalassery-Coorg-Mysore highway, linking Mattanur and Virajpet. Adjacent smaller towns include Padiyoor, Peravoor, Kakkayangad, Aralam, Keezhppally, Vallithode, Karikkottakary, Angadikadavu, Anappanthy, Edoor, Ulikkal, Vattiyamthode, Mattara, Manikkadavu, Kilyianthara, Punnad, Charal, Edapuzha, Uruppumkutti, Vilakkode, and Chavassery.

Iritty's Geography

The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the town of Iritty. Iritty is surrounded by hills and has a river running through it, which is commonly referred to as the Iritty River or Iritty Puzha. There is a steel girder bridge that was constructed in 1933 over this river. Additionally, there is a dam located in Pazhassi, called the Pazhassi Dam, which serves the purpose of irrigation and is located approximately 10 kilometers from the town. Many popular tourist destinations in Wayanad are located near this place. Most of the nearby areas rely on Iritty for their shopping needs. The nearby small towns include Payam, Aralam, Punnad, Vallithode, Kilyianthara, Kondambra, Kolikkadavu, Keezhur, Ulickal, Vattiyamthode, Mattara, Kalanki, Manikadave, Manippara Perumpally, Nuchiyad, Vayathoor, Edoor, Peratta, Karikottakari, Angadikadave, Puravayal, Kootupuzha, Charal, Alathupramba, Thermala, Urathoor, Vilakkode, and Madathil.

Since March 2013, Iritty has been designated as a Taluk headquarters after the Kerala government declared new taluks for the state. Iritty Taluk is located within the Thalassery Revenue division. There are 20 villages within the Iritty Taluk, including Aralam, Ayyankunnu, Chavasseri, Kalliad, Kanichar, Karikkottakari, Keezhur, Kelakam, Kolari, Kottiyoor, Manathana, Muzhakkunnu, Nuchiyad, Padiyoor, Payam, Pazhassi, Thillankeri, Vayathur, Vellarvalli, and Vilamana.

Iritty, situated in the northern region of Malabar in Kerala, is a charming hillside town renowned for its stunning natural landscapes. The town’s allure lies in its picturesque rivers, streams, lush green hills, and valleys. Iritty River, the primary watercourse, is formed by the confluence of three rivers – Bavali, Aralam, and Barapuzha (also known as Veni River). The name ‘Iritty’ is derived from the local term ‘Iratta puzha,’ which means ‘Double River’ since the town was nourished by two main rivers – Barapuzha and Bavalipuzha – that merge at the same spot.

Iritty experiences a tropical monsoon climate (Am) characterized by heavy to extremely heavy rainfall from April to November, and little to no rainfall from December to March.

Iritty Bridge

Located equidistant from the nearby cities of Kannur, Thalassery, Mahe, Taliparamba, and Virajpet (Karnataka State), Iritty is connected to Thalassery, Mattanur Airport, and Kodagu via the proposed Kannur Mysore National Highway or SH 30, which was initially known as the TC Road by the British. Interstate bus services traveling to Madikeri, Mysore, and Bangalore utilize this highway. Additionally, SH 36 links Iritty with Taliparamba, which provides access to other towns such as Irikkur and Sreekandapuram. Keezhur serves as the starting point of Iritty town, and it is easily accessible via road from both Kannur and Thalassery. Buses frequently travel to and from Iritty to several locations across Kerala, including Kottayam, Cochin (Ernakulam), Mangalore, Kasaragod, Panathur, Kanhangad, Cherupuzha, Wayanad, and Kozhikode. While there is no railway line in Iritty, the nearest railway stations are located in Kannur and Thalassery, with the closest airport being Kannur International Airport at Mattannur, situated 19.5 km southwest of Iritty.

Iritty is a prominent town in the Kannur district that serves as a hub for commerce. Its proximity to villages that cultivate cash crops and plantation crops has contributed to its significant commercial activity. As one of the rapidly developing towns in the district, Iritty is known for its production of pepper, rubber, and cashew nuts, which are sold under regional brands in auction houses and commodities markets.
