Neal Schon Explains Why Journey Fired Jeff Scott Soto

Journey guitarist Neal Schon explained why the band dismissed former lead singer Jeff Scott Soto, saying he "didn't sound right" to them.

Soto, who sang on Yngwie Malmsteen 's first two solo albums in the mid-'80s, replaced Steve Augeri in Journey in December 2006 after Augeri began suffering throat problems on the road. (Augeri had replaced classic-era singer Steve Perry in 1998.) But Soto's appointment lasted less than a year, and, in December 2007, Journey hired Arnel Pineda , who fronts the band to this day.

When asked about his firing by Argentinian journalist Lucas Gordon, Soto said (via  Blabbermouth ): "The problem is I don't know. That's the problem. If I knew what the problem was, if I knew the reason why I got fired, then at least I could be at peace with it; I could find a way to discuss it or talk about it. But I'm not legally supposed to talk about it. ... It got to the point where we had to take it [to] legal side of things."

Soto added that he "signed a document that I wouldn't talk about anything negative, anything bad about them. And I don't wanna talk negative." The singer said he simply wanted an answer as to why he was let go. "If I was told why I was fired, if I was told, 'Your voice sucks,' if I was told I killed one of the guys' dogs, if I made somebody in their family angry, if I was told the reason why I was fired, I could make peace with it. But to this day, 14 years later — whatever it is — I don't know. I don't have the answers."

Schon responded to Soto's claims in a Facebook comment on the Blabbermouth article. "It was unfortunate, but Steve Augeri’s voice gave out," the guitarist wrote. "We were in the middle of [the] Def Leppard tour, so I was working with Jeff on [a] side project and suggested he come in and help [finish] the tour. It went well but all were not sold on him being the lead singer after writing a tune and listening. Both [keyboardist Jonathan Cain ] and I agreed it didn’t sound right - or, better put, what we wanted. I hope this satisfies this ongoing drama. It didn’t work out."

Soto previously lamented that he was not listed as an official member of Journey in the band's website bio. "There’s zero mention, there’s zero attention brought to the fact that I was even in the band and I did those tours,” he said in 2019. “I was officially made a member of the band. And then for them to act like it didn't exist or to say that they wanted a signature sound, and I was only supposed to be a hired gun and just to get them through the tour, that kind of bums me out."

Journey – ‘Turn the Page: Live in Atlanta, GA’ (Bootleg)’ (2006) – Album Review (The Jeff Scott Soto Series)

Journey were on a massive Stadium Tour with Def Leppard in 2006. Journey’s lead singer, Steve Augeri had struggled with throat issues and was really having a hard time vocally. The decision was made by Neal Schon to replace Steve and he needed someone he knew could handle the Journey catalog. Luckily for Neal, he had been working with Jeff Scott Soto in their supergroup Soul SirkUs and knew he was the man for the job. Neal called Jeff and there was no way Jeff could say no, it was a dream of his to sing with Journey. He had already been working with Neal, but now he could do it and sing those classic Journey songs, No way he was turning it down.

Jeff got the call and was on a plane the next day and arrived in D.C. on July 5th 2006 and luckily the band had a couple days off, but Jeff had to be ready to sing as the first show with him was on July 7th in Bristow, Virginia. And Jeff was thrown in to the deep end as he didn’t really get to talk with anyone until the day of the show and didn’t even have a setlist for the show until that day and to top that off, he didn’t even get a soundcheck or any real rehearsal with the band…damn that is insane. The only time he had with the band was on the tour bus prior to the show to discuss the set and show. Jeff, of course, survived and continued on with the band.

Jeff’s stint was supposed to be short term, but he was doing so well and the tour was extended until December. Then on December 19, 2006, Jeff was announced as the official new lead singer with the band. His reviews from the tour were glowing and all was going well. There were plans for a new album and work had begun, but by June 2007, it all fell apart rather quickly and as far as Jeff was concerned, unexpectedly. It was announced on June 12, 2007 that Jeff was no longer in the band and the band was going to take the rest of the year off. I don’t think anyone is really sure what happened, but the band eventually wound up with Arnel Pineda who is still with the band today.

At this time, Jeff was on tour with Talisman doing their farewell tour and rumors were running wild that he was going to be replaced. At the Sweden Rock show, the band Aerosmith was there and they had the same management as Journey. Someone from that camp came up to Jeff and said how sorry he was that he was no longer in the band. Jeff hadn’t been officially told yet he was out. What a way to find out. Now there is a lot more to that story, but I needed to condense it here as I’m writing a review and not a novel about the situation..

I’m going to speculate here for a second. I wonder if Neal & Jonathan were threatened by Soto. Soto likes to contribute in songwriting for his projects and I feel that could have been an issue with the Journey gang. They don’t tend to let anyone in and as proof, I don’t think Pineda gets a whole lot of writing credits. Or did the band truly want a Steve Perry clone with Arnel. Nothing against Arnel as I think he is great with the band and has an amazing voice. But it is still all very perplexing. Out of all that drama, at least I have a bootleg show of his July 13th show in my hometown of Atlanta. I was sadly not at that show and I am not sure why I wasn’t. Let us get to the show.

My copy of the show is digital, but I know there is a CD bootleg of the show as my friend Mike Ladano has it. And I need it…Guess I need to go up to the Great White North and get it!! The recording itself is an audience recording and it isn’t that bad actually. Everything is pretty clear although I have to turn things up a little louder to hear it better. The show kicks off with “The Star Spangled Banner” which has Neal Schon showing off his skills and he has some mad skills. No denying how great of a player he is. The band goes in to “Any Way You Want It” and Jeff attacks it with great confidence and the band sounds great. After the song, there is an announcement that Steve would not be singing tonight due to ongoing health issues and please welcome Jeff. I am going to go out on a limb that 1/2 the audience didn’t even notice the difference and the other 1/2 were probably expecting Steve Perry to still be singing.

jeff scott soto singing with journey

After the announcement, the band goes in to “Ask the Lonely” and then when they get to “Only the Young”, Jeff’s voice totally cracks and he he has to stop for the rest of that line then picked it up on the next one. I don’t think Jeff can get as high as Perry and throughout the night he did struggle with those really high notes, but this song was the hardest for him I believe. Now, he has only been with them for a week and still getting used to these songs and the whole thing so I will cut him a break. If you expect Jeff to sound like Steve Perry, you’d be sadly mistaken. Yes, Jeff can really do these songs justice, it is still Soto. He is being himself and not trying to be Steve Perry as you can hear on “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin” as he is just himself and that is plenty good enough to enjoy that song as the band really has fun with it.

One of the cool things during the show was that drummer Deen Castronovo sang three songs. He did “Who’s Crying Now”, “Open Arms” and “Faithfully”, 3 of the band’s biggest songs. And Deen is an incredible singer and he sounds a lot like Perry. One of the most uncool things of the was the Jonathon Cain keyboard solo. Sorry, the only keyboard solo I ever want to hear is Jon Lord and Jonathan Cain is no Jon Lord…sorry Mr. Cain. The show is pretty much all Steve Perry song, nothing before his time and nothing after his time. If I was Steve Augeri, I think I’d be pissed that after doing two albums, no songs, but maybe they changed the setlist to all Perry songs for Soto…who knows.

I am really happy to have this piece of Soto history of his very brief time with Journey. I wish I could get one later in the tour to see how his vocals got better as at times he seemed out of breath and like I said earlier, he struggled a little with the really high notes. But, he still does a great job and this is live so you don’t expect things (or want things) to be perfect. His crowd interactions were great as he felt confident and comfortable in that role which he should as he has been doing this for 2 decades by this point. If you a fan of Perry’s era in the band, you got a great show, if you were there to see Def Leppard, you got a great opening act and nothing to be disappointed about (did I mention this tour was a co-headlining tour with Def Leppard?). My Overall Score is a 3.5 out of 5.0 Stars because it is still Soto, it is a cool piece of his history, it is Journey, but it isn’t the best sounding recording for a bootleg, however, still not the worst i’ve owned. I just have to turn this up a little bit louder to get a good volume. I will still try to find a physical copy of this as I do need it to complete the Soto Collection.

Up next will be the very last studio album by Jeff’s band Talisman.

Awesome setlist, even if a little light on pre-Cain material. It’s sad that Soto got sacked so early, as he seemed like a good fit, even with a different range than Perry. He also seems like a real pro, the way he handled the whole situation.

He is a real pro which might’ve scared Cain & Schon. Soto might have his own ideas and no way those two are going to let that happen. It could’ve been awesome.

In that case, it was a genius move on their part to pick an unknown soundalike like Pineda. Someone who can replicate the Perry sound, but is likely too respectful to interfere with songwriting and business matters.

I think this is my favorite period of Journey. Truth. Soto could have done big things with them, if they weren’t terrified of their own past.

I would’ve loved to have seen what they could’ve done with Soto. Soul SirkUS gives us a little idea and that idea was amazing.

I think a new album with Soto would have been better than the one they made with Arnel at that time, but that’s just me.

I would agree with that wholeheartedly.

Lost opportunities.

I think my favourite song on here would be “Jonathan Cain On Keys” must be a bonus Japanese track of some sorts! Audience recordings can be sketch so I’m glad this one sounds decent enough for you.

Ha!!! Yeah, please skip that bonus track.

Wish I had this one! Not into Bootlegs at all.

Nice capture of Soto’s time with the band.

From the stories I’ve read I’ve come to the conclusion that both Schon and Cain are dicks. But still great songwriters and I’m still a fan. Lol.

That is being too nice. I could think of much stronger words!!

Chicago Concert Reviews

Chicago Concert Reviews

We’ve got the windy city covered., vocal dynamo jeff scott soto discusses his melodic journey to “wide awake (in my dreamland)”.

Posted by Andy Argyrakis

Jeff Scott Soto

Ever since he landed on the global map as the premiere vocalist for Swedish guitar giant Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force at a mere 18-years-old, Jeff Scott Soto became a mainstay in many circles of melodic rock.

A list of more than 85 contributions includes current membership in symphonic superstars Trans-Siberian Orchestra and progressive metal supergroup Sons Of Apollo (featuring players from Dream Theater, Mr. Big and more), while he even notched a season as the official lead singer for Journey in the back half of the 2000s.

All the while, Soto’s solo career marched on, culminating in “Wide Awake (In My Dreamland),” a double-decker new project featuring a set of studio material recorded and written with Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Jorn, Revolution Saints), along with a bonus live concert recording from the Frontiers Rock Festival in 2019.

The native New Yorker of Puerto Rican descent gave Chicago Concert Reviews an inventory of it all, including the blessing in disguise of forced time off, stepping into the theatrical shoes of TSO and unwillingly going his “Separate Ways” with some Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, yet ultimately being content in the way his cards fell (dating all the way back to local Aragon Ballroom beginnings).

Does it feel like lucky number seven in terms of solo albums or have you lost count by now given your quantity of collaborations?

What’s the meaning behind the title “Wide Awake (In My Dreamland)”?

Soto: I came up with the title around December when I actually wrote the lyrics to the song. I liked the way it resonated, especially the lyric itself for the song. The title of the album resonates more towards world affairs, more so U.S. affairs. We’ve been living in a kind of dream bubble for quite some time. And I don’t even want to equate it to the last four years because that would be unfair to say that nobody else was contributing to this bubble. But I will say, especially recently, the world is in a state. When you add all the civil unrest, to the political division, to the religious [differences], to social injustice, there are so many different things that I can’t believe I’m still seeing in 2020. As far as I’m concerned, that’s what’s reflecting the fact this can’t be real. I must be dreaming, but in the end of this, it’s absolutely real, even though it seems like we’re living in a dreamland at the moment. Everybody thinks I named the album because of the whole COVID, and lockdown, and everything. It just happened to fan out even more now because of that.

You mentioned getting the ball rolling in December. What was your timeline for finishing the album?

Soto: It was discussed in April of 2019 when I visited Frontiers Festival and I had a sit down with the label. We had breakfast the next day after we did our performance. They said it was time to start thinking about a new solo record and suggested I work with Alessandro Del Vecchio, who’s somebody I’ve known for the past 15 years, but haven’t really worked with him. He’s worked with so many people that I know and respect, and he’s done some amazing, incredible, respectful work as well, so I thought it was a fantastic idea to team us up and see what we could come up with. Alessandro wrote all the music, demoed all the music and all of my vocal performances were done to his demos. He played guitar solos and he played everything on these initial demos of these songs. They sound pretty damn good, so they were good enough to get my vocals done to them.

I started writing the lyrics and melodies while I was doing the TSO tour because I had a SOTO tour to finish in September going into October. Then I went out with TSO for those two months, came home and I literally had 15 days to knock out 11 songs after coming off these massive tours. My voice was toast man. You could hear how tired I was on the original versions of those songs that I sang. COVID was a blessed event for me cause not only were we able to delay the release, it gave me the opportunity to revisit some of the things I would’ve been so bummed if they were released with the original vocals, so I got lucky on both fronts. I [originally] knocked out the vocals in two weeks and then I started the Sons Of Apollo tour [at the start of 2020] and there was no real time to come back home and fix anything. My only time home was coming back from the European tour four shows deep. We had to cancel it because COVID began.

You’ve always bounced between rockers and ballads within a variety of styles. How would you describe the make-up of this album?

What made you decide to include a live concert as a bonus part of the collection?

Soto: I worried that cramming 50 minutes of the best of Jeff Scott Soto show, which after cutting all the fat from the set ended up as a 42-minute album, was not going to be valid enough to warrant as a standalone product…So they came up with a perfect solution of putting it out digitally so people can pick and choose, but also give it to people who are still supporting and only buying physical product…It’s just more of an incentive to buy the record, to get a bonus disc out of it. I couldn’t be more pleased with the balance of this decision…

Can you take us back to the day it was recorded?

Soto: Every time I do the Frontiers Rock Festival, I swear it’s like a wedding reception. Anybody who’s been married, when you get to the reception, it’s almost like a blur when you get to the end of the night. You’re exhausted and you’re like “oh my God, what the hell just happened?” You feel like it was a big, blurry dream. You saw so many people, friends, colleagues, family, etc. Almost everybody on the roster are friends of mine, colleagues and people I don’t get to see that often because we’re all so busy. To put us all under one umbrella, I’m constantly going from one end of the backstage to the other all day. The two days I was there, it was just a non-stop reunion, so at the end of it, I’m like “oh my God, we played a set didn’t we?” It truly is more of a blur. That’s why I’m so happy even listening back to this thing when Alessandro mixed it. It was just a blessing to be able to remember it based on having this recording of it now.

Do you have a lasting Chicago concert memory to share?

[Had it not been for Yngwie], my life and career probably would’ve taken a different course. I’m not saying I maybe wouldn’t have made it or wouldn’t have had the opportunities that I had have, but it certainly would’ve been a different course. I owe Yngwie my life in terms of giving me that opportunity and hearing that I was ready to front him. I was 18 when I joined him. I didn’t have the world stage experience. All I had was the voice and the fact that I was tall enough for my age to make you think that I looked older, acted older and sang older…

How did a season of singing for Journey factor into your career? Was it just the right amount of time or do you wish it would’ve been longer?

Soto: It ended in a way that wasn’t favorable to me in any respect because of whatever the reasons that I still don’t know to this day were that I was let go. It didn’t offer me the opportunity to necessarily capitalize on it. I would’ve loved to have recorded an album with them, or a live DVD, or something that gave me a little more standing with the band that showed I wasn’t just a fill-in singer, as everybody refers to me. A lot of people don’t remember the December 6, [2006] statement that came from the band that said I was their new permanent lead singer, that I was replacing Steve Augeri and that I would be helping the band move into the future.

And when you hear their statement, even books that have come out since, they will stick to the story that I was just a fill-in singer or a hired gun. To me personally, it’s unfair that I didn’t get to show my own stamp that I would’ve loved to have done because that’s one of my favorite bands of all time. Steve Perry is one of my biggest influences, and vocal idols, and I would’ve loved to have been given the opportunity to put a little something out there, whether people enjoyed it or not, or accepted it. That goes without saying. There’s no crystal ball there, but I would’ve loved to have been given the opportunity to see it through a little further.

Soto: Well, one of the things of TSO is you’re not really brought on to show your own side. I was luckily brought into the fold cause Paul O’Neill heard something in my voice that he was looking for on the “Night Castle” record and then some, when you add the fact that I’ve been touring with them for the past 13 years. He heard and felt that my contributions as a singer were gonna be very vital to the organization. He didn’t necessarily bring me on so I can be Jeff Scott Soto. He brought me on because he knew that I could bring out the characters in the songs, and the stories that he writes, and that’s exactly what I’m hired for. He was amazing.

I’ve never been into musical theatre for this reason. I am not a character singer. I’m not a singer/actor, but he brought that out of me as something I didn’t know I had in me. That’s one of the things you do for TSO. You’re brought into the studio, you’re brought into the fold to basically bring these characters to life, so Jeff Scott Soto is not signing those songs. The way I would sing those songs as myself is not the way you hear them because I have to actually go into a role, into a character. There’s a different side, a different emotion that has to come out for those songs. It’s something I’ve been able to even utilize in things like Sons Of Apollo, and other things in my life and career that I never would’ve actually been able to draw from had I not been part of TSO.

Jeff Scott Soto Discloses The Hardest Parts About Singing for Journey

Share this post:

In a new episode of the Breaking Absolutes With Peter Orullian Podcast , Jeff Scott Soto has looked back on his tenure with Journey and revealed the hardest parts about singing for the band.

As you know, Soto was a member of Journey for about a week and a half. During his tenure with the band, they were in the middle of a six-week 2006 summer tour with the rock band Def Leppard .

Recently, he appeared to talk about the hardest parts of Journey . According to him, it was easy that to replace a member of the band who passed away. His job was very difficult because he was replaced with a man who’s alive.

jeff scott soto singing with journey

“One of the hardest parts about singing for Journey… Okay, first of all, replacing Steve Perry, Steve Augeri already had that task. But now I had the task of replacing the guy who replaced the guy.

“Now, if it were Queen, if it were a situation like Queen or AC/DC where the singer is deceased, there’s no way that singer’s ever gonna sing those songs again, so for the bands to forge on, they have to get a new singer. Stop whining, stop bitching, stop moaning – the band’s moving forward with a new singer because their original singer is no longer with us.

“Steve Perry was alive and well. Nobody knew his whereabouts, nobody knew if he was recording; all he ever said was, ‘I’m retired from singing, retired from performing.’

Soto Mentions Fans’ Reactions To Him

jeff scott soto singing with journey

Continuing to talk about the hardest parts of being the vocalist of Journey , Soto has touched on fans’ reactions. He blasted fairweather fans and said it was also one of the hardest parts about singing for Journey.

“But the fans, especially the fairweather fans who are not watching all the Blabbermouths and all the talk and all the gossip, the fairweather fans will just come to a Journey and all they’ll say is, ‘That ain’t Steve Perry,'” he continued. “Because they don’t even know he hasn’t been in the band for 20 years.

“All they know is, ‘Who’s that guy? This ain’t Journey. What’s going on here?’ They feel duped.

“So that was probably the hardest part about singing for Journey for me, was going on stage every night when a good portion of the audience was going, ‘Wait, Steve Perry’s alive. He can still sing, I bet. Why isn’t he doing this? Why do they have this guy?’ If Steve Perry was no longer with us, I think it would have been a little easier transition.”

Former Journey Singer Explains "Biggest Problem" With The Job

By Andrew Magnotta @AndrewMagnotta

June 26, 2019

Journey In Concert At Mandalay Bay

Jeff Scott Soto was the singer in Journey for about one year, and despite his frustration with how his tenure came to an end, he's as impressed as anyone at how Arnel Pineda has embraced the pressure of the role.

Soto arrived in Journey in 2006 after Steve Augeri started battling throat issues that rendered him unable to tour. While Soto was initially announced as a permanent member of the band, he was replaced by Pineda in 2007.

While Soto tells the RobCast podcast that he got the gig because guitarist Neal Schon knew he could get up to speed quickly, the singer added that it was "really difficult to adapt" to life on stage with Journey.

"First of all, my voice was already kind of going through its changes," he said. "If I had gotten that Journey gig even five years earlier ... I would have just killed the range, the intensity of what Perry left behind. The biggest problem ... was the fact that Steve Perry was alive and well."

During the press tour for his latest solo album, Traces (released last fall), Perry himself conceded that even he can't sing his old Journey parts the same way. He recalled embracing the challenge of writing more and more difficult vocals on each Journey album, until eventually he got too burned out to continue .

But beyond the physical challenge of singing songs from Perry's prime, Soto says the idea that Perry could return to Journey at any time put him under a microscope in direct sunlight; he was bound to go up in smoke.

"It's a totally different situation when you have like, say, Queen for instance," Soto continued. "You know there's no chance of Freddie Mercury come back. When Steve Perry is just sitting in his backyard sipping on some Kool-Aid, and you're on stage trying to pull his s--t off, you've got a lot of people ... they're gonna bag on you because, 'We don't want this. We want Perry. Why doesn't Perry come back?' ... I had to deal with a lot of that, as I'm sure Augeri had to, and even Arnel had to."

Soto added that all these years later he feels disrespected by Journey, which for some reason is loathe to acknowledge his time with the band.

"There's zero mention — there's zero attention brought to the fact that I was even in the band and I did those tours," he said. "I was officially made a member of the band. And then for them to act like it didn't exist or to say that they wanted a signature sound and I was only supposed to be a hired gun and just to get them through the tour, that kind of bums me out."

Jeff Bridges Says His Health Is 'Great,' Admits He Doesn’t 'Think Too Much' About His Cancer Journey

The actor, 74, was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2020 and announced he was in remission in 2021

Jeff Bridges is sharing a health update more than three years after revealing he was diagnosed with lymphoma .

The Oscar-winning actor, 74, spoke to PageSix at the 49th Chaplin Award Gala and said he’s been doing well in remission and has come a long way since he was “pretty close to dying” during his cancer treatment in 2021.

“My health is great,” he said.

The Big Lebowski star went on to say that he doesn't spend a lot of time dwelling on his health struggle, adding that he’s glad to put the health scare behind him.

“It’s such a learning experience being sick like that,” he told the outlet. “It’s amazing the way the mind can forget all that stuff. I’m not thinking too much about the past.”

Bridges first shared his lymphoma diagnosis on Twitter in October 2020, writing at the time, "Although it is a serious disease, I feel fortunate that I have a great team of doctors and the prognosis is good. I'm starting treatment and will keep you posted on my recovery."

Lymphoma is cancer that affects the lymphatic system. According to the Mayo Clinic , symptoms of lymphoma can include painless swelling of lymph nodes in your neck, armpits or groin, persistent fatigue, fever, night sweats, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss and itchy skin.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

After sharing his diagnosis, Bridges continued to update fans on his journey, saying that he was "feeling good" two months later, in December 2020.

After announcing the good news that his tumor had "drastically shrunk" in January 2021, Bridges shared in September 2021 that he is officially in remission.

"The 9" x 12" mass has shrunk down to the size of a marble," he wrote in an update on his website at the time.

Bridges stated on his website that he came close to death during his cancer battle, but it made him appreciate life even more.

"While I had moments of tremendous pain (screaming singing, a sort of moaning song all through the night) getting close to the Pearly Gates, all in all, I felt happy and joyous most of the time," he said at the time. "This brush with mortality has brought me a real gift — LIFE IS BRIEF AND BEAUTIFUL. LOVE IS ALL AROUND US, AND AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES."

Everett Cafe: T hinking, Acting, and Learning: On Student Activism

Student activism plays a major role in motivating others for political, economic, social, or environmental change. It may be expressed through marches, sit ins, walk outs, vigils, rallies, boycotts, strikes, letter writing, petitions, or publications, with the most common form being demonstrations and protests. Acknowledging respect for the freedom of students and their right to free speech, activism also serves to develop skills in communications, relationship building, and critical thinking -- skills that grow leaders. It is both a learning experience and an opportunity for more traditional forms of leadership to examine and address concerns on many levels, including those that relate to campus life, culture, and administration.

In Thinking, Acting, and Learning: On Student Activism we explore different facets of student activism, from its historical example in the United States, to its reach and influence across the globe, with compelling narratives drawn from Europe, Asia, and Africa. This book display complements the archival book display, Student Voices in Print and Perpetuity , in the Third Floor Reading Room cabinets, as well as the adjoining Offit Gallery art exhibition, Artivism: Art from the Heart .

At Everett Cafe, you'll find a new book collection every few weeks that relates to current events, education, or learning environments.

They learn to think, create, and act upon their values, opinions, beliefs, and perspectives while becoming leaders for change. In representing both the individual and collective perspective and actions of students within the context of education, the student voice serves to awaken us to the complexities of ourselves, our societies, and our world, as their publications provide a tangible record.

Award Winning  Children's Literature in Art and Animation: The Morton Schindel Animation Cels Collection

Founded in 1953 by Morton Schindel in Weston, Connecticut and named after the wooded area where he lived, Weston Woods produced audio and short video of award winning and notable children’s books. By adapting classic picture books to film, Schindel in collaboration with lead animator Gene Deitch brought children’s literature to life to enhance literacy; offer joy in learning; strengthen storytime in schools and libraries; and instill the lifelong love of books and reading.  As Morton Schindel grew his artistic haven beyond his inspirational home, Gene  Deitch worked eagerly  from his studio in Prague, Czechoslovakia, famed for its c olorful baroque buildings, Gothic churches, and the medieval Astronomical Clock, which gives an animated hourly show.

In the early 1990s, Morton Schindel, an alumnus of Teachers College, Columbia University, gifted entire sets of Weston Woods materials, as well as  select animation cels  used in the creation of his films to the then Milbank Memorial Library. These animation cels were among millions used in such films as  Doctor De Soto ;  Goldilocks ;  Here Comes The Cat! ;  Patrick ;  Red Riding Hood ;  Smile for Auntie;   Strega Nona ;  Sylvester and the Magic Pebble ; and  Wings: The Tale of Two Chickens . Crisp colors, larger than life characters, beautiful settings, and fanciful creatures draw one’s eye to the beauty of children’s literature, with appreciation for the men who made it move.
