Jordan is home to Petra – one of the world's most fascinating sites. This World Heritage-listed lost city could very well be worth the trip alone, but Jordan offers much, much more. Touring this Middle Eastern country is an absolute pleasure as day trips and overnight expeditions reveal a rich culture steeped in history along with stunning scenery and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Come for a private tour of Petra and stay for everything else.

Don't miss these Jordan attractions

  • Petra private tour
  • Diving in Aqaba
  • Desert castle tours
  • The mosaics of Madaba
  • Overnight stays in a Bedouin camp

The natural elegance of Petra

The lost city of Petra is a stunning city carved directly into the sandstone face of the Nabataen mountains. It used to be home to approximately 30,000 people with impressively intricate public buildings, modest homes and fortified tombs. It now stands as a remarkable reminder of days long gone, and it is an absolute must-see when travelling to Jordan.

As Jordan's most popular attraction, there are numerous tours to Petra depending on how much time you want to dedicate to the city. Day trips are available with guides providing the history of the city. Alternatively, a private two- or three-day tour enables you to delve deeper into the city to discover some of the less travelled areas.

From Amman to Aqaba

If you can tear yourself away from the amazing city of Petra, Jordan offers many other sensational experiences. The country is home to numerous ruins, historic sites and biblical locations that attract travellers from around the globe.

Amman is the capital city, providing a great base from which to explore. Single and multiple day tours are available, allowing you to explore the country and its many treasures. Overnight stays in Aqaba are great for those wishing to dive the Red Sea, or you might want to consider a day trip to Madaba to view the historic mosaic map of ancient Jordan.

Full Review of Exoticca’s Jordan Tour 2022

exoticca's jordan tour

Last Updated on April 24, 2023 by Maggie McKneely

Want to visit Jordan with a tour group but not sure which one? Have you seen Exoticca’s enticing prices but are not sure they’re worth it? Check out my review of Exoticca’s 9-day tour of Jordan (and read to the end to save $200!)

*This post contains affiliate links. That just means that if you happen to click on one of those links and end up making a purchase, I make a small commission (and you will have made my day!)

Review of Exoticca’s Jordan Tour

The last time I wrote a review about Exoticca, I said I would book another trip with them. And true to my word, I did just that. So, how did round #2 go?

If you’ve been following the blog for a while, you know that I prefer to do all of my own trip planning – booking tickets, reserving hotels, and doing trip research is almost as fun as actually traveling (I know, I’m weird). But when I went to Egypt , I decided to book a tour with an agency because I’d heard that Egypt is extremely challenging to do on your own. Exoticca had a tour with a wonderful itinerary for a shockingly affordable price and most of the reviews I saw online were positive.

My experience with Exoticca on that trip went so well that when I started planning a trip to Jordan, I decided I’d trust them once again. Currently working full-time while also in school part-time while doing 400 other things (including this blog) it’s also a major time saver to put the trip planning into someone else’s hands every now and then. So this time I went with their 9-day tour of the Hashemite Kingdom (the fancy name for Exoticca’s Jordan tour).

So am I glad I did another trip with them? OH YES.

Exoticca's Jordan tour

Table of Contents

What is Exoticca?

First things first: what is Exoticca , exactly?

Exoticca is an online travel agency. They offer tour packages that include flights (for much cheaper than you can get on your own), accommodations, transfers, tours, and activities in countries all over the world. They do not themselves run tours (like Gate 1, for example), but partner with local companies in each location.

Exoticca acts as a middleman of sorts between you and the local tour agency that actually handles everything in-country. They work with a team of over 50 curators who are experts extensively familiar with each destination in order to create vacation packages that provide unforgettable and unique experiences. And because they deal directly with the local providers, they are able to keep costs low.

The Booking Process

My one complaint about my Egypt trip was Exoticca’s booking process. But in the time between writing that review and booking Exoticca’s Jordan tour, the booking process had actually changed slightly, and for the better.

When booking my Jordan trip, the process was mostly the same simple and easy process as it had been before. Once I chose my destination (Jordan) and which package I wanted, I selected which category of comfort I wanted. Exoticca offers “Charm,” “Superior,” and “Luxury.” Not all trips have all three categories; some only have two and a few only have one option. Charm is the most budget-friendly and Luxury is, well, the most luxurious. For Egypt, I did Superior because that was the cheapest option; the Exoticca’s Jordan tour has a “Charm” option, so I went with that this time.

Next, I picked the dates of our trip. Exoticca’s helpful calendar tells you the price differences between different dates, so if you’re trying to travel during the cheapest time of year, their calendar makes it easy to see when that is.

After that, Exoticca gives youthe option to add on any optional excursions, but you don’t have to make a final decision on that until 30 days before your trip. Exoticca’s Jordan tour has several optional add-ons and I didn’t finish deciding which ones I wanted until shortly before the 30-day window.

Exoticca's Jordan tour

A city tour of Amman is an add-on

During the booking process, Exoticca is completely transparent about the price of the trip, so you won’t be surprised by any additional taxes on the final payment page.

The last step before paying is choosing your flights. My one complaint last time was how Exoticca handled booking flights. Before, you wouldn’t be notified about what your flights were until about a month before you were supposed to leave for your trip (STRESS for people like me who plan way in advance!). You also didn’t have the option to pick which flights you wanted, so you were stuck with whatever they booked for you.

Now, however, you get to pick your flights during the booking process! I don’t know if Exoticca saw my last review or if enough other people complained about this, but I’m very glad that they fixed this. Some flights, like direct flights, may cost extra than the base package price, but Exoticca is upfront about that and you have the option to pay for that if you want.

The final step is putting down your initial deposit. At the time of booking, you pay 60% of the trip cost and the final 40% is due 60 days before your departure date. Once you pay, you will receive an immediate email confirmation. Between booking and final payment, Exoticca sends multiple reminder emails, so there is no chance you will forget to either pay the final installment or book any optional trips you want to add on.

Types of Tours

Both my Egypt trip and my Jordan one were technically group tours. Exoticca offers a group tour option for all of their destinations. I say “technically” because, in Egypt, most of the people in my group ended up being friends of mine. And for Jordan, because my trip was the second week of December, there were only 6 people on the tour – the four members of my own family and another couple, which was basically a private tour. Exoticca’s group tour option is supposed to max out at 30 people, but I have not experienced a group that big. Maybe most people do end up in a group like that, but I’ve been very lucky so far.

However, if you are concerned about being stuck with a bunch of strangers for a week, Exoticca does offer a private tour option or a small group option for many of their trips.

The Local Tour Operators

Picking partners in the destination country is really where Exoticca shines. For Exoticca’s Jordan tour, they work with Jordan and Beyond Tours .

The trip got started as soon as we touched down in Amman, where an airport representative from the tour met us near the gate. He helped us get through customs, collect our bags, load them onto the shuttle, and then drove us to our first hotel.

The next morning, we were greeted in our hotel lobby by the tour guide who was supposed to be with us the whole week. As circumstances would have it, he was only with us for the first two days. Then he had a family emergency and had to take some time off, so he was replaced with another guide. We liked our first guide perfectly fine, but we lucked out with the replacement – Riad Zaki.

Riad has been a tour guide in Jordan for 37 years and it shows. He was extremely personable and knowledgeable, and the man seemingly knows everyone in the country. While we were in Jordan, there was a nationwide trucker protest going on that affected tour buses using the main highwy between Amman and Petra. Riad was constantly in contact with the police and other tour guides to make sure the situation impacted us as little as possible and to ensure that we never felt in danger (which we didn’t – we just felt like it was part of the adventure!).

wadi rum exoticca's jordan tour

With tour guide extraordinaire Riad

In fact, we never had to worry about anything. My dad did something to his ankle while hiking around Petra, and Riad kept a close eye on him the rest of the trip, always making sure there was an easier alternative to whatever we were doing that my dad could participate in.  Riad ensured that every transfer was taken care of, any issue we had immediately addressed, and every question was answered.

We became such good friends with Riad that on the last day, he invited us to his home in Amman for a meal with his family! This was not part of the regular tour, but a sign of how generous and kind both the Jordanian people and the tour company are.

As mentioned, Exoticca is a separate entity from Jordan and Beyond Tours, but they are proof that Exoticca does its research when choosing what local companies to partner with. If you, for some reason, don’t want to book through Exoticca (for example, you don’t need flights and are just looking for a tour in-country), you can book a variety of different tours in the region through J ordan and Beyond Tours directly.

Exoticca’s Jordan Tour Itinerary

Because Jordan is such a small country that is mostly uninhabited desert, you can see all of the highlights in 9 days. I didn’t feel like we missed out on anything important, but I also didn’t feel rushed.

We spent a full day in Petra and a full day and night in Wadi Rum. We spent time floating in the Dead Sea and visiting several Crusader and Byzantine castles that I’d never heard of. Visiting Amman’s historic sites is an optional add-on that I recommend because the Citadel is worth visiting.

We actually did all of the add-ons for Exoticca’s Jordan tour. In addition to the Amman city tour, we did Petra by Night and the Wadi Rum Stargazing experience. Neither of those are must-dos. It’s cool to see Petra lit up at night, but the show (yes, there’s actually a performance) is bizarre and not worth anyone’s time. Stargazing in the Wadi Rum is amazing because you can see so much, but it takes over an hour, which we were unprepared for, especially since it gets so cold in the desert in the winter.

I’ll post the full itinerary on the blog shortly, but as far as this review goes, I thought the length and time of Exoticca’s Jordan tour trip was perfect.

Dead Sea

Floating in the Dead Sea

Exoticca Trip Insurance

Exoticca offers several different levels of trip insurance. The most basic, which automatically comes with each booking, guarantees a full refund if they have to cancel the trip for whatever reason (COVID, some kind of political or natural disaster in the destination country, etc). The next level allows you to cancel for any reason up to 30 days before the trip for trip credit with Exoticca. The highest level lets you cancel for a full cash refund. Every level gives you 24/7 assistance both before and during your trip.

Exoticca Quality Control

An important part of this Exoticca review is noting how the company ensures high quality while staying within budget. With such low prices, you might think that the quality of accommodations would be kind of meh. I can speak with experience that that was not the case in Jordan.

Three of the four hotels for Exoticca’s Jordan tour were phenomenal, even though we chose “Charm,” the cheapest comfort level. We stayed in a beautiful resort on the Dead Sea , a wonderful boutique hotel in downtown Petra , and slept under the stars in a Wadi Rum bubble hotel at Hasan Zawaideh Bedouin Camp . The only hotel that was questionable was our one in Amman . The food was unfortunate and it was a bit outdated, but it was clean and the staff were extremely kind and accommodating, so it was fine for a couple of nights.

wadi rum martian dome exoticca's Jordan tour

On the porch of my “martian dome”

When choosing hotels for their packages, Exoticca requires that they have a minimum of 3.5 stars (out of 5) on  Tripadvisor . They also require that 65% of reviews left by customers be “excellent” or “very good.” That way you know you won’t be staying in any sketchy or completely rundown hotels.

Now that Exoticca has fixed the way they book flights, I only have one criticism. And it’s not even really a criticism, just something you should know. There’s not any ability to customize the itinerary. If there’s something you’d like to go see or do and it’s not part of the itinerary, you’re probably not going to be able to do it.

Normally, I hate not having control over the itinerary, but for this trip, the advantage of having a tour guide who knew the best things to do and places to go outweighed the ability to customize the trip, especially when I’m not nearly as knowledgable as a local. Plus, because Jordan is a small country, I really felt like we did just about everything major there is to do. Exoticca’s Jordan tour has a jam-packed itinerary!

I love the process of researching a trip and the flexibility of building my own itinerary, so if I hand that task over to somebody else, they had better do a good job. If I trust them to do it twice, that must mean they’re doing something right! And the fact that I only have one minor complaint of note for Exoticca’s Jordan tour is really saying a lot. The booking process was easy and smooth, the customer service was helpful, the local tour agency was AMAZING, and the price of the trip was a steal.

Would I book yet ANOTHER trip through Exoticca? Already have – we’re headed to Morocco later this year! Book your own trip with Exoticca today, and save $200 by using my link !

Thanks for the honest review. I’ve been to Egypt on a group tour and would do it with Jordan as well. This is one to keep in mind.

I’ve always wanted to visit Jordan but I think I would be to nervous to book it all myself. I also would feel nervous to leave it all up to someone else as well but it looks like you had a great time! Lovely post!

Thank you for sharing the review. It is indeed helpful. I

Thank you so much for sharing this great review! I’m thinking of going to Jordan this year because I’m dying to see Petra and using Exotica seems like a great idea for that. Will definitely think about this. 🙂

Great post. Jordan hasn’t really been on my radar yet but I’m starting to hear more and more about it, I think a group tour is a great way to explore the area and I appreciate your helpful review of Exoticca.

I’ve always wanted to float in the Dead Sea! I’m glad to know I would be able to fit in into a short trip!

This is a great review! I have always wanted to visit Jordan but wasn’t sure how to go about it. This tour agency sounds like a great option!

Great review. I have been considering visiting Jordan and surrounding countries for some time now. I will heed your advice.

Thank you for this incredibly honest review. Jordan is one of my bucket list destinations and I will certainly consider this tour.

Jordan has been on my list for some time now but also always felt like a bit of a hassle to organise to be perfectly honest. Glad to see there are other options out there – thanks for sharing!

I’d love to visit Jordan and Exoticca seems to be the right company to book it with! Thanks for your detailed review and inspiration to finally go!

I’m not huge fan of organised tours, but this does sound like a great and easy way to explore the country!

Exoticca’s Jordan tour sounds like the perfect company when exploring this area. While I love planning, sometimes I want someone else to take the wheel. Great review!

Really interesting post. I’d love to visit Jordan and Egypt, and tour groups sound like a good option. Thanks for sharing and I’ll check out the link!

We too like to plan our own travel but the few times we booked tours it worked well. Glad to know that your trip with Exoticca to Jordon was a good experience. But I would never have a tour company book my flights. I have the same opinion about letting cruise companies book airfare. Looks like a great trip with all the add-ons.

The land is so vast I probably wouldn’t try to tour it on my own. Thanks for the review!

Going in a couple of weeks (end of Feb2024) and pleased to read such a good review. Thanks.

Wadi Rum Bedouin in Jordan

More about Israel

More about jordan.

  • On the highest hill in Amman you'll find the Citadel. The hill was a fortress for thousands of year and archaeologists have found artefacts from the Bronze Age. Two of the most impressive remains are the Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace.
  • Wadi Rum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Jordan. The 74,000-hectare property is a rich and varied desert landscape of narrow gorges, dramatic cliffs, 20,000 rock carvings and a strong history of human occupation that dates back 12,000 years.
  • The Dead Sea is actually a lake that's bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. The 'sea' sits 400 metres below sea level and the water is nearly 10 times more salty than most oceans. Aptly named because nothing can live in the water, that doesn't put off humans and bathing is must. The high salt levels make floating a breeze and the mineral-rich mud is believed to have therapeutic qualities that will make your skin shine!

jordan flight tour

Travel with the experts for a carefully curated, value-packed discovery of the world's most iconic destinations. Our tours are bursting with must-see sights, rich experiences and quality inclusions, all at an unbeatable price. Bucket list dreams are ticked off on these all-encompassing journeys.

Day 1 Home Cairo

Prepare to be inspired. Depart today for your journey to the Middle East.

Day 2 Cairo

Salaam Alaikum! Welcome to Egypt. On arrival at the airport, make your way to your hotel located near the Pyramids of Giza.

A buzzing metropolis, home to at least 19 million people, Cairo gives you a great feel for Egyptian streetlife. It’s busy – almost frantic – and among the hustle and bustle, it’s an exciting blend of old world and new. Arabs call this city Umm al-Dunya (the mother of the world). There are many beautiful mosques to visit, like the Mohammed Ali Mosque in the Citadel. Or head to the oldest part of Cairo, the Babylon Fortress, to see ancient ruins. For stunning panoramic views of the capital, go up the 187-metre-high Cairo Tower.

Try some street food – lamb shawarma, anyone? – or get a taste of Egyptian street life by visiting a cafe. Sit in an ahwa and sip traditional mint tea. The shisha pipe can be found in many ahwas and restaurants across Cairo.

Day 3 Cairo

This morning, meet your guide and head out to see some of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Explore these structures that have stood tall for some 4,500 years and learn about the ancient history of the monuments. The oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact, the pyramids are a sight to behold.

Afterwards, we visit the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of antiquities. Wander the treasure-filled halls of the museum, a highlight of which is the masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun.

Day 4 Cairo Luxor

Today, enjoy a free day at leisure.

Later this afternoon you'll be transferred to the airport to board your included flight to Luxor.

Join a local guide to get in touch with Cairo's Islamic heart. From backstreet bazaars to minaret-topped mosques, and neighbourhood coffee houses, these are the places that make Egypt's sprawling capital what it is. We will visit Sultan Hassan mosque and Madrasa, the finest piece of early Mamluk architecture in Cairo. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan then we will enjoy a walk in Moez street starting form Bab el Fetouh and we will end our Adventure in Khan El Khalili Bazaar. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan el-Khalili is one of the world’s largest bazaars and offers a truly authentic local Cairo experience.

Please note: the start and duration times outlined are subject to change based on factors beyond our control such as traffic and weather conditions. Your Tour Guide will confirm operation times with you whilst on-tour and can answer any further questions you may have.

Starts: 8:30am End: 3:30pm Inclusions: private transportation, private guide

Day 5 Luxor Embark on Nile Cruise

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then we'll explore the magnificent Karnak Temple, which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient pharaohs' monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak was built over some 200 years and was once known as the 'Chosen of Places'. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun.

Then it’s time to embark on your luxury Nile cruise that will be home for the next 4 nights. You’ll cruise between Luxor and Aswan on this elegant ship, with all the comforts you would expect from a 5-star floating hotel.

Please note that since the sailing distance between Luxor and Aswan is approximately 200kms, that it is typical for all cruises operated along the Nile to be docked for majority of the time to conduct sightseeing, with the sailing to occur of an evening. The vessel will be docked either in Luxor or Aswan. Depending on the time of year and number of vessels operating at the same time, you will also find that all vessels are docked beside one another, which is beyond our control.

To ensure that our customers have appropriate expectations prior to their journey, it is important not to compare this experience to that of a European River Cruise, which tend to cover a greater distance and on larger vessels. Instead, you will experience a Deluxe stay on-board your vessel, offering a great chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the banks of the Nile while you sit back and relax. Your cruise schedule will be provided once on-board.

Situated on the East Bank of the Nile River, in the city of Luxor, Luxor Temple was built approximately 1400 BC. The site is over 73 sq km and exhibits obelisks, giant statues, an Avenue of Sphinx statues, the Grand colonnade and the Barque Shrine of Theban Triad. Viewing is as majestic at night as it is during the day.

Start: 4:00pm End: 6:00pm Inclusions: return transfers to temple, entrance into Luxor Temple

Day 6 Luxor Valley of the Kings Luxor Edfu

Today we'll discover some of the many wonders of ancient Thebes. Our first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Carved from granite blocks, they represent the Pharaoh Amenhotep III and were once part of an impressive colonnade.

Continue on to the spectacular royal burial site of the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are the tombs of more than 60 pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. Explore this sprawling and spectacular place with your guide, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BCE) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where archaeological discoveries are still being made. Your guide will explain the history of and legends surrounding these remarkable people, their funerary rites, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well-preserved in the deepest tombs.

After paying a visit to three of the most interesting royal tombs we'll continue to the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, a stunning colonnaded building of sharp lines that contrasts beautifully against the craggy high cliffs behind it, creating a spectacular natural amphitheatre. One of Egypt’s greatest queens, this temple was built to prove her importance among the ancestors.

Enjoy lunch upon your return to the boat. There is time to relax on deck, or in your cabin, before we set sail for Edfu. Generally the journey from Luxor to Edfu takes place between 1pm an 11 pm, though the departure time may vary, depending on river traffic. En route to Edfu we pass through the Esna Lock and head upstream.

Edfu Temple Please note: The only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horse and carriages. As a responsible travel-focused business, animal welfare is extremely important to us and we want to ensure that we are not promoting any activities where the working animals are not properly cared for. Unfortunately, some operators of the Horse and Carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines and it is, for this reason, we will no longer include the visit to the Temple of Edfu.

In addition to the animal welfare concerns, we have had a substantial amount of feedback suggesting that the experience itself is quite uncomfortable due to the pushy nature of the vendors and local suppliers outside the site. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you. Edfu is an included port stop on the Nile River cruise schedule.

Day 7 Edfu Kom Ombo Aswan

Today we will moor near Edfu – home to ancient settlements and temples, as well as a bustling town centre and a bazaar.

Later we'll return to the boat where we’ll continue travelling upriver, with plenty of free time for relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – from fishermen casting nets and farmers working their land to the desert hills that frame the lush riverbanks.

This afternoon we'll arrive at Kom Ombo Temple. Set dramatically on the bank of the Nile, 47 kilometres north of Aswan and 168 kilometres south of Luxor, the soaring, chunky columns of the double temple are a magnificent sight to behold as you arrive from the river.

Dedicated to the gods Sobek and Haroeris, the temple's finely carved reliefs give a sense of this area's prominence as capital over the surrounding region during the Ptolemaic era. Today, Kom Ombo may be a sleepy agricultural backwater surrounded by sugar cane fields, but its prime position along the Nile meant it was once one of Upper Egypt's most important centres. Wander through the temple's colonnades, gazing up at scenes of kingly propaganda, and you'll get a sense of this rich history for yourself.

Return to the cruise boat where you’ll continue travelling upriver towards Aswan.

Please note: the only mode of transport available to visit the Temple of Edfu is by locally managed horses and carriages. As a business that seeks to promote responsible travel, animal welfare is extremely important to us at Inspiring Vacations, and unfortunately, some operators of the horse and carriages have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. It is for this reason we do not include the visit the Edfu Temple. While we recommend that you do not use the horse and carriage to visit the Temple, the decision is ultimately up to you and your guide can help arrange transport and ensure the best horses are used.

Day 8 Aswan Abu Simbel Aswan

Today you will awake before sunrise for an early morning start. Sit back and relax as you drive to the ancient Abu Simbel temples, near the southern Egyptian border. You will have an early arrival into Abu Simbel to view one of the most incredible sights you will see. The two enormous sandstone structures were built in the 1200s BCE by Ramses II to serve as lasting monuments to himself and his favourite wife Nefertari. The larger temple, dedicated to three major Egyptian deities, features four large statues of Ramses II on its façade, while the smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess of love, Hathor, with statues designed to embody Nefertari.

Set on the banks of the artificial Lake Nasser, the structures were once in danger of being flooded with the construction of the Aswan High Dam but were saved via an extensive project to cut the temples into pieces and move them to higher ground, where they are seen today.

On our return to Aswan the rest of the day is free for you to make your own discoveries.

This afternoon, we'll enjoy a sailboat ride around the Nile River islands in a traditional felucca (a small, traditional Egyptian sailboat).

Philae Temple is situated on an island just south of Aswan. It was built by the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, the Ptolemaic. The temple is dedicated to Isis - the goddess of healing, magic and birth, her husband Osiris and their son Horus.

Take a 20-minute drive from Aswan to the dock, where you will embark on a 20-minute boat ride to Agilkia Island, where the Philae Temple complex is located. You will have approximately 2 hours exploring the island and temple before returning to Aswan by boat and road vehicle.

Start: pending Cairo to Aswan flight  Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation (boat and road vehicle) from Aswan to Agilkia Island, entrance into Philae Temple complex

Day 9 Aswan Cairo

Today we will leave Aswan and make the short flight back to Cairo. On our return to Cairo enjoy your free time relaxing or doing some last-minute sightseeing.

Sit down for a home-cooked meal with a local family. During this experience, you'll get to visit a local family and learn about Middle Eastern traditions, Egyptian culture and tasty food but most importantly, enjoy a delicious and authentic home cooked meal.

Start: confirmed on tour Duration: 3 hours Inclusions: return transportation, home cooked meal

Day 10 Cairo Amman

Today, say goodbye to your Egyptian tour leader and get ready for the next leg of your journey as you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Amman, Jordan. Welcome to Jordan, cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in biblical history. On arrival at Amman's Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel. You will meet your Jordanian tour leader today.

Day 11 Amman Jerash Amman

After breakfast enjoy a tour of this capital city. Cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in ancient biblical history, Amman is a bit of a chameleon. Most of the city's historical sites are located downtown. Here we'll visit the Citadel, with remains from the Roman to the early Islamic period; the Jordan Archaeological Museum, which houses the oldest Neolithic statues dating from 8000 to 5000 NC, as well as other valuable artifacts; the souq, where we'll get an idea of everyday life; as well as the beautifully restored 2nd-century Roman Theatre.

Next we'll take a short drive (approximately one-hour) north to Jerash. Once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world, Jerash now boasts some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Admire this site's striking collection of crumbling archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets. Grand columns encircle the city's centrepiece, the Oval Plaza, a wonderfully atmospheric place to linger after exploring this ruined city's lasting riches.

Day 12 Amman Petra

Today marks the beginning of our journey towards the fabled site of Petra. En route we'll visit Madaba, an ancient market town that's home to a number of fine Byzantine mosaics, the most outstanding of which lies within Saint George's Greek Orthodox Church. Here, a map of the Holy Land once carpeted the whole floor, said to contain more than two million pieces. Crafted around 560 CE, a large swathe of this mosaic map can still be viewed, providing the oldest map of Palestine in existence.

Next we'll continue to the ancient village at Dana, on the edge of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, where local artisans sell silver jewellery.

Later, we'll drive along the King's Highway, up to Shobak Castle, sometimes known as Montreal. Perched at the top of a hill in the desert, this ancient Crusader castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Muslim sultan Saladin in 1189. Stroll the site and discover a small chapel, original gatehouse, and find out where a long, dark secret passage leads.

Day 13 Petra

Get ready for Petra! A firm fixture on most bucket lists for good reason – the jewel of Jordan is an arresting sight. The so-called Rose City boasts an impressive series of tombs, caves and temples hidden behind ornate façades carved directly into the rock. No one knows the exact date of this desert kingdom's creation, but the lost city of the Nabateans is believed to date as far back as the 2nd century CE. The city has lain empty and unknown for centuries, only rediscovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer.

You'll feel just like Indiana Jones, as you meander through the narrow canyon known as the Siq; at times the path measures only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side of you. It's easy to imagine the armies and merchants who made their way here many years ago, and the sense of awe they too must have felt upon reaching this ancient rock-hewn kingdom, surrounded by such a stark landscape. The Siq is the main entranceway to The Treasury – perhaps Petra's most iconic sight, and one of its most elaborate temples.

Petra's greatest surprise, however, is its size. With our guide we'll explore the old Roman road, the amphitheatre and several tombs. We'll also climb up to the beautiful façade of the Monastery, from where you will have a magnificent view of the entire site.

Exploring this truly extraordinary destination is sure to be a highlight of your trip.

Day 14 Petra Wadi Rum

We continue to Wadi Rum and browse around the excellent and informative visitor's centre. We'll visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence, towering sandstone mountains and spectacular desert landscapes of this surreal 'Valley of the Moon', where, the wind-sculpted rock formations change in hue throughout the day.

We'll also meet with local Bedouins, who live in scattered camps throughout the area, and ride camels to our traditional Bedouin tent, situated deep within the valley. We'll enjoy an evening with them at one of their camps, savouring the hospitality of these nomadic peoples and the uninterrupted desert panoramas.

Wadi Rum is probably best known for its connection with the enigmatic British army officer TE Lawrence, who was based here during the Great Arab Revolt of 1917-18. Much of David Lean's movie on his exploits, Lawrence of Arabia , was actually filmed in this very region.

Please note - While we are sure that this experience will inspire you, please be aware that your stay will differ from that of a traditional hotel. There are no hotels in or near Wadi Rum: the only places to sleep are the numerous bedouin-run camps dotted around the desert. The camps that we use are quoted as being 'luxury' because their locations differ from other styles of camps and your tent will have its own ensuite. Even at the best and more 'luxurious' camps, bathroom facilities within the tents are somewhat rudimentary and the bedding can also be quite basic, however still offering you a comfortable nights' accommodation. All of your meals are included and will be served in a common social area. While we may not make it sound glamorous, it will be a unique and memorable experience.

Day 15 Wadi Rum Dead Sea Amman

After waking up in the unique environment of the luxury camp this morning, we'll enjoy a walk around the area before scaling one of the large dunes to enjoy sensational views of the surrounding area; keen photographers will be delighted. We'll then ride camels back across the Wadi Rum desert.

Later, we'll drive for approximately an hour and a half to reach a radically different landscape – the Dead Sea. We'll spend the afternoon on the shores of this famous body of water, named for the dearth of life in its waters. The saline water has a high density that keeps bathers buoyant and makes getting underneath the surface very difficult. Floating on the surface without any sort of lilo makes for a once in a lifetime experience. Afterwards we'll return to Amman for the evening.

Day 16 Amman Home

Enjoy one last delicious breakfast this morning, before your adventure comes to an end. You’ll be transferred to the airport to board your flight home.

Important Information

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

This particular tour is categorised as a “3”.

3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. If you have any form of walking aids, other than a walking stick or hiking poles, then this tour is not suitable.

Tipping A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. You will be asked to provide tipping to your guide towards a ‘kitty’, which is then used towards the guide tipping for the services of helpers, hotel staff, restaurants and airport porterage. We suggest USD$5 per person per day towards the kitty. Please note that this tipping is not for the guide, merely for the guide to tip the services of the driver and local workers during your tour. While not made compulsory, if you choose not to contribute to the kitty it means that the guide is tipping for these services out of their own pocket. Your cooperation in this instance is most appreciated.

Tipping for your guide will be collected at the commencement or conclusion of their services in each country. To remove the uncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommend USD$6-8 per person per day. The amount you wish to contribute is dependent on the services received and at the complete discretion of the guest. Thank you for your understanding.

Accommodation The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences however any changes are beyond our control

Welcome to Egypt’s capital and largest city. Travelers who purchased our air-inclusive package will be met at Cairo International Airport, and assisted through customs and formalities before transferring to your hotel. Take some time to relax and get settled before joining fellow travelers at a welcome dinner.

Day 2: Pyramids of Giza

jordan flight tour

Our destination today: the wondrous Pyramids of Giza. Built during the Third and Fourth Dynasties, these monuments stand as testimony to the skill and strength of their builders. We’ll get up close to study the Great Pyramid, as well as see the Pyramids of Khefren and Mycerinus in the distance. Nearby, we’ll gaze at the mythical Sphinx of Giza, which famously combines a reclining lion with the head of an Egyptian king. After these amazing sights, we’ll lunch like the Egyptians do at a local Cairo restaurant.

Day 3: Cairo – Aswan

jordan flight tour

Today you’ll be picked up at your hotel and we’ll fly from Cairo to Aswan. Upon arrival you can either hop on another short flight for an optional tour to the Abu Simbel Temples or head to the hotel and start exploring Aswan at your leisure. Later we will all join together to sail on the Nile by a motorboat to the Nubian Village that is located on the West Bank of the River Nile. This fantastic tour to the Nubian Village lets you meet a Nubian family, have a drink in their home, while learning about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions.

Day 4: Aswan – Nile Cruise

jordan flight tour

In the morning, visit a modern-day architectural wonder, the Aswan High Dam, as well as Philae’s Temple of Isis, which was nearly lost to rising water in the 1960s until the dam was built. Afterwards, you’ll board your Nile cruise ship to depart on a three-night journey from Upper to Lower Egypt.

Day 5: Nile Cruise – Kom Ombo – Edfu – Luxor

jordan flight tour

We’ll cruise to Kom Ombo to visit an unusual double temple, built in the Ptolemaic period and dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-head god Horus. After exploring Kom Ombo, we’ll sail on to Edfu, an Egyptian city on the west bank of the Nile River. Our day continues with a tour of the immense, well-preserved Temple of Edfu, built between 237 and 57 B.C. and also dedicated to Horus. Legend says that this was the site where Horus avenged his father’s murder by his uncle, the god Seth. Back on board our ship, we’ll sail past Esna to Luxor.

Day 6: Nile Cruise – Luxor

jordan flight tour

Often considered the most extraordinary open-air museum in the world, Luxor boasts an imposing array of ruins and monuments. The modern name for Thebes (the “city of palaces”), Luxor is also the inspiration for the word luxury, and we’ll see quite a bit of architectural extravagance today. The graceful Temple of Luxor was built over several centuries by Amenhopis III, Tutankhamun, Ramses II and Alexander the Great and features an avenue of sphinxes. We’ll also tour the ancient temple complex of Karnak. The immense wealth of Thebes was spent embellishing and building temples in honor of Amun-Ra, the most important and powerful of ancient Egyptian gods. The balance of the day is at your leisure.

Day 7: Luxor

jordan flight tour

After breakfast, we’ll say farewell to our ship and continue our exploration of Luxor and the Nile’s west bank. We’ll visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Egypt’s second confirmed female Pharaoh and regarded as one of its most successful rulers, as well as royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The afternoon is free to relax or investigate exhibits at the Luxor Museum.

Day 8: Luxor

jordan flight tour

Enjoy this free day at leisure in Luxor to explore further or relax by the pool.

Day 9: Luxor – Cairo

jordan flight tour

A morning flight takes us back to Cairo and our last hotel. Today, we’ll explore the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which houses the world’s largest collection of artifacts from the era of the pharaohs, including some belonging to King Tut. Afterward, we’ll wander through the bustling, colorful Khan El Khalili Bazaar. We’ll end the day by sharing memories of our amazing travels through Egypt at dinner before we leave for Jordan tomorrow.

Day 10: Cairo – Madaba – Petra

jordan flight tour

This morning, we'll depart Egypt by plane for Jordan. After we arrive in Jordan, we'll visit Madaba, "the City of Mosaics", where we'll see the St. George Greek Orthodox Church, known for housing the Madaba Map. This map is a floor mosaic depicting Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Afterward, we'll travel ten minutes west to Mount Nebo—the presumed site of Moses' death and burial place. After our visit, we'll continue to Petra where we'll check in at our hotel and enjoy dinner.

Day 11: Petra

Petra

Prepare for an extraordinary day! After breakfast today, we'll drive to Petra where we'll take a tour of the breathtaking "rose-red" city (by horseback and foot), which begins at the "Siq", a winding canyon road. At the end of the passage, we'll see Petra's most beautiful monument—the Treasury—carved out of the solid rock from the side of the mountain. Beyond the Treasury, we'll discover soaring temples, elaborate royal tombs, a theatre, burial chambers, and water channels. Next, we'll drive to Little Petra, the suburb of Petra in ancient time. Here, we'll see more awe-inspiring ruins on our short walk.

Note: This day may be more taxing as this is a full day of walking on uneven surfaces.

Day 12: Petra – Dead Sea

jordan flight tour

Today we'll get a glimpse into the life of a Jordanian farmer and her family. We'll learn how to bake whole wheat Saj bread, pick free-range eggs, feed a baby goat, and more before we sample fresh food from the farm under a 400-year-old oak tree. Next, we'll visit the site of John the Baptist's settlement at Bethany Beyond the Jordan, believed to be the Baptismal Site of Jesus Christ. Located on the east bank of the Jordan River in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, it is being systematically surveyed, excavated, and restored to receive pilgrims and visitors. The Bethany area sites form part of the early Christian pilgrimage route between Jerusalem, the Jordan River, and Mount Nebo. After our visit, we'll continue to our hotel on the Dead Sea.

Day 13: Dead Sea

jordan flight tour

After breakfast at our hotel, we can enjoy a relaxing day at the Dead Sea, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. At your leisure, float in the clear blue, mineral-rich water, soak up some sun, and even try the invigorating full-body mud mask that cleanses the skin. We may also consider an optional tour of Amman, the capital of Jordan (see optional tours for more details).

Day 14: Dead Sea – Cairo

jordan flight tour

After breakfast, we'll leave Jordan behind as we fly back to Cairo. This evening, we'll share a farewell dinner with our fellow travelers.

2025 Tour Itinerary

Welcome to Egypt’s capital and largest city, where ancient wonders blend seamlessly with modern life. Take some time to relax and get settled before joining our fellow travelers at a welcome dinner.

jordan flight tour

Our destination today: the wondrous Pyramids of Giza. Built during the Third and Fourth Dynasties, these monuments stand as testimony to the skill and strength of their builders. We'll get up close to study the Great Pyramid, as well as see the Pyramids of Khefren and Mycerinus in the distance. Nearby, we’ll gaze at the mythical Sphinx of Giza, which famously combines a reclining lion with the head of an Egyptian king. After these amazing sights, we'll lunch like the Egyptians do at a local Cairo restaurant.

Today, we'll travel to the airport for our flight from Cairo to Aswan. Upon arrival, either hop on another short flight for an optional tour to the Abu Simbel Temples or head to the hotel to start exploring Aswan at leisure. Later, we'll join together to sail on the Nile by motorboat to a Nubian Village located on the West Bank of the Nile River. This fantastic visit to the Nubian Village lets us meet a Nubian family, have a drink in their home, and learn about their lifestyle, culture, and traditions.

This morning, we'll visit the Aswan High Dam, a modern-day architectural wonder and a testament to human ingenuity. Next, we'll visit Philae's Temple of Isis with its intricate carvings. We'll learn about its dramatic relocation to higher ground after it was nearly lost to rising water in the 1960s. Afterward, we'll board our Nile cruise ship for our three-night journey from Upper to Lower Egypt.

We'll cruise to Kom Ombo to visit an unusual double temple, built in the Ptolemaic period and dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-head god Horus. After exploring Kom Ombo, we'll sail on to Edfu, an Egyptian city on the west bank of the Nile River. Our day continues with a tour of the immense, well-preserved Temple of Edfu, built between 237 and 57 B.C. and also dedicated to Horus. Legend says that this was the site where Horus avenged his father’s murder by his uncle, the god Seth. Back on board our ship, we'll sail past Esna to Luxor.

Often considered the most extraordinary open-air museum in the world, Luxor boasts an imposing array of ruins and monuments. The modern name for Thebes (the “city of palaces”), Luxor is also the inspiration for the word luxury, and we'll see quite a bit of architectural extravagance today.

Day 8: Luxor – Cairo

A morning flight takes us back to Cairo. Back in Egypt's capital city, we’ll explore the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which houses the world’s largest collection of artifacts from the era of the pharaohs, including some belonging to King Tut. Afterwards, we’ll wander through the bustling, colorful Khan El Khalili Bazaar.

Day 9: Cairo

Enjoy this free day at leisure in Cairo to explore further. We’ll end the day by enjoying dinner with our fellow travelers.

Our tour comes to an end after breakfast today.

Old City Cairo

Day 9 Morning Tour

This morning, we'll discover Old City Cairo beginning with one of the oldest and most beautiful Christian places of worship in Egypt: Al-Muallawa (Hanging Church). The church was built on top of one of the old fortress gatehouess with its nave suspended over the passage. We'll continue to The Church of Saint Sergius, also known as Abu Serga, which was built upon an ancient Roman fort in Old Cairo. The Church of Saint Sergius was named after renowned 4th century saints, Sergius and Bacchus, both of whom were martyred at al-Resafa in Syra for their Christian beliefs. Our last visit will be to the oldest synagogue in Egypt, Ben Ezra Synagogue, where we'll learn about its history.
