Josh Groban (born February 27, 1981) is an American multi-platinum, award-winning, classical, pop and operatic singer, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

Having started life with dreams of acting, it wasn’t until the summers of ’97 and ’98 where he attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp in Michigan that singing became his priority. Groban subsequently studied at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and Cernegie Mellon University, before dropping out of the latter having been offered a recording contract. Aided by singing at the 1999 inauguration of the Governor of California Gray Davis, a duet with Céline Dion, and a popular appearance in “Alley McBeal”, Groban’s early career went from strength to strength

Following a host of benefit shows including “The Andre Agassi Grand Slam Event for Children” with Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Don Henley and Robin Williams, “Muhammed Ali’s Fight Night Foundation”, and “The Family Celebration”, the singer released his self-titled debut album. The November 2001 release highlighted Groban’s voice as a force to be reckoned with, notably on the singles “Gira Con Me Questa Notte” and “Alla Luce Del Sole”. The album subsequently went double-platinum, earned favourable reviews from critics, and spawned the Adult Contemporary Chart No. 1 “To Where You Are”.

The singer’s classical style and enviable vocal range have led him to perform at a number of high profile events including the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo, Norway, the Vatican in Rome, Italy, and at the World’s Children’s Day alongside Céline Dion, Nick Carter and Enrique Iglesias. The singer’s sophomore full-length “Closer”, released in November 2003, represented a much more honest and open approach to songwriting and producing than its predecessor. The album ultimately topped the U.S Billboard 200 after debuting at No. 4, aided by the popular singles “You Raise Me Up” and “Remember When It Rained”. Groban built on this success with the release of “Live at the Greek” in 2004, “Awake” in 2006, the Christmas album “Noel” in 2007, “Illuminations” in 2010, and “All That Echoes” in 2013.

Live reviews

What a sensational performance. Setting aside for a moment his immense talent as a singer and pianist he is a truly great performer who clearly appreciates his audience and goes to the nth degree to give back to them and interact making them feel include in the show. Indeed, he returned to the stage to give a second encore in response to crowd’s applause and finished the night with heart felt version of ‘You Raise Me Up’. Everyone on stage with him from the orchestra to guest stars seemed genuinely delighted to be there and a part of the show.

He did a lot of musical numbers from his latest album Stages including songs from Chess, Carousel and Phantom of the Opera. It’s hard to pick favourites from a show that was so consistently strong but if pushed to choose I’d say his production of Le temps des cathédrales from Notre-Dame de Paris was particularly mesmerizing. Another highlight of the evening for me was when he revealed Louise Dearman as a guest performer. I first saw her several years ago staring alongside Rachel Tucker in the West End production of WICKED The Musical. What can say except breath taking. She is such an elegant, powerful and proud performer commanding an immense stage presence. She starts to sing and you just find yourself drawn in, captivated and enchanted. I doubt a single member of the audience could have failed to have been moved by their version of ‘If I loved you’.

Throughout the night the show just seemed to go from strength to strength leaving you at the end of the night feeling uplifted and overjoyed. A truly spectacle evening. I urge any and everyone to go see the show if you get the chance.

At first one would think that Josh Groban is just another opera singer whose voice is slightly bigger than everyone else’s, but if you have ever seen him live, you would bite your tongue for having said anything of the kind.

Along with the majestic orchestra he usually has set up, the combination of instruments and his voice puts you in a state of emotional bliss. Wishing and wanting to be able to belt it out the way he does.

His albums, in no way, hint at his personality. Listening to his music, you would think he is quiet, reserved, deep and intelligent. Of which all could be true, however, at a live show Josh Groban shows another side, a louder, funnier, and charming side that you had no idea even existed. Running in to the crowd, singing happy birthday to those who deserve it and making a joke at every opportunity and mind you, the jokes are actually funny. Strangely enough by time the show ends you are left crying because ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘You are Loved’ hit you right in the spot, but crying even harder because you’re laughing at all the random things he keeps saying. Wonderful, his performances are simply wonderful.

I love listening to Josh Groban. At the concert I learned it does not really matter if I hear him through good speakers or live. At least not at this concert.

There was nothing wrong with the concert. He performed, but that was all. Somehow, I did not feel like he engaged the audience. He primarily looked off to his stage right, since I was sitting stage left, that was frustrating.

I don't really fault him, but I thing between the altitude and the tight concert schedule, he was just tired.

The photo shot was very brief. Later I learned other people had several photos taken, I had the standard 3 fast shutter clicks and out. Others had fun poses! I counted, only 80 people, total qualified for pictures, and extra 15 seconds with those who did not get the extras, would not have ruined his or anyone else's night, but would have made ours. I barely got to say hello and thank you.

No encore, he did not even come out for an extra bow.

Again, I love to listen to him. I have most of his albums. I think he is a great person, as I have watched and read interviews. I just wish he was feeling it MORE on Tuesday night.

Josh Groban is the operatic singer, turned multi-platinum pop singer with a really rather gigantic voice and a fanbase to match it. His following is rather extreme, often attending Groban's shows numerous times and following him on tour yet with his warm personality and impeccable sets you can begin to understand why.

His operatic and theatre influences are very apparent this evening as Josh stands at the helm of a complex setup featuring a huge number of instruments including harps, strings and percussion. These all add luxurious layers to the likes of 'False Alarms' which sounds so much more four dimensional than the recorded version. The crowd attempts to sing along but it seems rather futile as Josh hits the high notes of 'February Song' with his power chord vocal. He thanks the audience for their effort none the less and explains that their support it was keeps him touring at the gruelling pace he has become accustomed to. As he takes his final bows following a winning version of 'You Raise Me Up' the applause are rapturous for his class act.

Fantastic concert to a full house! Josh was on point and sang many songs from his new album, Stages, as well as a couple of Christmas favorites from his 2007 Christmas album, Noel. He invited Lena Hall to sing a duet with him twice, as well as showcase a couple of her own songs from her R&B/rock solo album. Josh was charming in his anecdotes and seemed genuinely happy to be there, following a canceled showing in October due to a 103-degree fever. I enjoyed the night immensely as a Groban fan and a showtunes lover!

This was an absolutely phenomenal concert. I saw him in May of 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed that concert, but there is something about maturity of the voice and person that becomes him. He sang songs from Stages, as well as a couple of other "easily recognizable" songs those of us Grobanites will remember. I could have not asked for better seats (third row, center stage) and a better concert. He was personable, humble, and sang beautifully. Thank you for a delightful evening, Josh Groban!

I thought that the show was FANTASTIC, I love anything that he sings. He put on a excellent show the singer before him was also excellent.

As soon as I heard he was going to be at Madison Gardens I asked my family if they would take me to see him because they know much love his singing. I have Parkinson's so they said that they would checked out about the Handicap section, and I have to say all the that helped were fantastic.

It was a fabulous night. My daughter and I are big fans of Josh Groban. Saw the great Comet of 1812 on Broadway three times all from different parts of the theater. We played his songs all the way back to the hotel and then from the hotel back to Brookline Massachusetts. His voice is just heavenly and we both can’t get enough of Josh. Look forward to many years of listening to his songs

About Preservation Hall Jazz Band At a moment when musical streams are crossing with unprecedented frequency, it’s crucial to remember that throughout its history, New Orleans has been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. Nowhere is that idea more vividly embodied than in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held the torch of New Orleans music aloft for more than 50 years, all the while carrying it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history they were founded to preserve is a vibrantly living history.

PHJB marches that tradition forward once again on So It Is, the septet’s second release featuring all-new original music. The album redefines what New Orleans music means today by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city’s Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

About Lucia Micarelli A superb classical musician, Lucia is recognized throughout the world for being a featured soloist with Josh Groban, Chris Botti, Jethro Tull, and also for her starring role on the critically acclaimed HBO series Treme. Since then, Lucia’s profile has continued to soar. In 2018, Lucia appeared in her first PBS concert special, which aired throughout the US and spawned a live album.  In 2020, Lucia joined the Hallmark Family and starred in the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries holiday movie The Christmas Bow.  Having been influenced by her experience on Treme, she’s absorbed many types of musical styles and has since added singing to her repertoire.  This ability to combine these diverse influences allow her to move from classical, to jazz, to traditional fiddle music and Americana, while creating a musical map unlike anything heard before from a violinist - all bound together by her trademark emotional vulnerability and technical wizardry.

About Eleri Ward Eleri Ward is a New York City-based actor, singer, and musician. In 2021, she recorded and produced her full-length indie-folk Sondheim album, "A Perfect Little Death," in her closet. After gaining a viral TikTok following, it was released by Ghostlight Records and has been hailed as “a harmonious marriage of musical theater and indie folk music, with hauntingly beautiful arrangements” by Forbes and “an incandescent new record, something genuinely new” from American Theater Magazine. Her original pop music has been called “soaring” (Nexus Music Blog), “astonishing” (Rising Artists), and “dreamy” (Neon Music). Her most recent pop EP, "Friction," was released in 2021. Eleri has been singing and acting since she was eight years old and has always strived to carve out her own space with the uniqueness she brings to the theater. She studied songwriting at Berklee College of Music before transferring and graduating from The Boston Conservatory with a BFA in Musical Theater and an emphasis in Songwriting, which shows itself clearly in the way she has taken on the Sondheim canon. www.eleriward.com @eleriward

The best part of a Josh Groban concert (it isn’t the singing)

It may be odd to suggest that the best part of a groban concert isn’t the singing. but here’s a case for it.

Singer Josh Groban performs at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City.

By Lottie Elizabeth Johnson

On a bleak Friday afternoon in March, when the COVID-19 pandemic was in its infancy, Josh Groban put on a little concert from his home .

The video and audio quality weren’t great. But in between songs, through his dirty computer lens, Groban proudly showed his fans a framed photo of his dog, Sweeney, talked to his fans about the seriousness of COVID-19, encouraged fans who may be feeling lonely to seek help and even apologized for the plain gray wall behind him.

“Somebody just said the audio sounds like I’m down in a well,” Groban said with a laugh as he started reading the comments that flooded the Facebook livestream.

Eventually, he picked up his laptop, walked to the bathroom and took advantage of the shower acoustics to sing “You Raise Me Up.” And then, after sharing a message of encouragement with the 3,500 fans who were watching live, he said goodbye.

“Hope we can do this in person sometime again really, really soon.”

A little over two years later, Groban is back on the road.

He’s more dressed up now. He’s backed by a full band, orchestra and choir, performing songs from his album, “ Harmony ,” which he released in November 2020 (in case you’re wondering, he does not recommend putting out an album “smack dab in the middle of a global medical emergency”).

Wednesday night’s show at Salt Lake City’s Vivint Arena was a substantially glossier production than Groban’s shower singalong during the early days of COVID-19, but one crucial element remained unchanged: the singer’s approachability.

In an arena that can seat up to 20,000 people for concerts, Groban seemed intent on being as accessible to his fans as he was singing through his laptop at home. On the large stage, the singer was poised as he performed everything from 2006’s “February Song” to material from the new album, determined to let each baritone note ring loud and clear. But in between numbers, he went at a frenetic pace as he chatted with his fans, sometimes getting ahead of himself and stumbling over his words. It was as if he was catching up with a friend he hadn’t seen in years.

And in a way, that really was the case.

A lot has happened since Groban’s last Salt Lake City show in 2018. Before the pandemic, he was about a third of the way through recording “Harmony,” which he originally envisioned as an album of all covers — a tribute to classic songs he loved like Kenny Loggins’ “Celebrate Me Home” and Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” But as he hunkered down at home, with more time on his hands than he’d had in a while, he experienced a musical awakening of sorts. He found himself creating.

Now, once again at the arena where he filmed his “Awake Live” TV special in 2007, Groban was visibly eager to let his fans in on the stories behind some of his newer music as well as the longtime hits. He’s a fast talker and a descriptive storyteller, and while there isn’t data to back this up, there’s a good chance he spoke more words than he sang.

Before singing his cover of Robbie Williams’ “ Angels ,” featured on his new album, Groban enthusiastically recounted the moment a bouquet of flowers — five dozen white roses — arrived on his doorstep, with a little note of gratitude from Williams. After gushing over the intricacies of the note — which was signed with not one, but two “XOs” — Groban ultimately and somewhat begrudgingly concluded that the gesture likely came from Williams’ management.

Before launching into “ February Song ,” he shared how he wrote it a few years into his stardom, when he felt overwhelmed by the pressures of the industry, and all of the perpetual praise and criticism that surrounded him.

In between his songs, he talked about mental health, influential teachers and the value of arts education. He encouraged parents to facilitate their kids’ passions. When he saw a “My First Concert” sign in the crowd, he noted that his first concert was New Kids on the Block in the third grade — a Christmas show that featured Donnie Wahlberg breakdancing in a Santa suit.

Some artists take the stage solely to perform. Fans pay good money to hear them sing, and that’s what they’re going to do. But Groban puts continual effort into forming a connection with his fans, crafting stories and painting as vivid a picture through his words as he does through song.

Of course, there’d be nothing wrong if he just came out and sang. He has an angelic voice that has attracted millions of fans, and it was clear from the start of Wednesday’s show — when he opened with a cover of Frank Sinatra’s “ The World We Knew (Over and Over)” — that his voice was in top form. But it’s this additional layer of entertainment — Groban’s sincere, sometimes awkward but always endearing down-to-earth rambling — that draws his fans in even more.

It may be odd to suggest that the best part of a Groban concert isn’t the singing. But here’s a case for it: You can listen to him sing anytime on the radio, on YouTube, on Spotify, you name it. But it’s in person, after you hear his heartfelt stories and messages, that those songs become even more powerful.

Groban talks with the same sense of hope and optimism that permeates his music, using his voice in more ways than one to do what he’s been singing about for nearly 20 years: to raise people up.
