Bus in the map

The version before this shows where the bus approximately in the map, the bus tracker. I prefer it that way rather than knowing the arrival times since the arrival times will keep changing over time. I rather see where my bus is in the map. Hopefully can add it back in the later version. This app has a lot of things that can be improve and others have pointed them out. However, the bus tracker is for me the best feature in this app. Really hope you can bring it back.
As the title said, this app needs much more improvement despite being advertised as an application with the ability to ease your journey. This app does not show the correct estimated time of arrival, of which was the reason I was forcefully asked to download and try by their customer service representative on twitter. It will show you which line and bus you should take and if you’re lucky enough, the time when the bus would arrive. Some places might not be registered yet on the app such as my the area where I worked at in Balakong. If you need to find the ETA of a bus at a specific bus stop, you will need to remember the full name indicated at the stop, or else it won’t show up in the search bar. All in all, if you’re hoping to find the timetable for your bus line, this isn’t the application I’d suggest you to use nor should you try their journey planner on the website as it is just as unreliable.

Developer Response ,

Dear Eddy, duly apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will take you feedback seriously and will work to improve the app it in every update. For any suggestions or feedbacks, do email us at [email protected]. Thank you.

Unreliable bus timing

T778. There isn’t much people taking the bus during non peak hours and the weekend but this affect my daily schedule. There’s a bus daily timetable printed out however sometimes the bus isn’t operating. I’m not sure this caused the driver, perhaps they are not scheduled to work. This cannot be because the bus runs daily. This App estimated time of arrival do not reflect similarly the same. For example, the bus arrived at 4.20pm but this app shows the next bus to arrive at 11pm. There’s no indication where the bus is and the GPS tracking in the map isn’t showing. I’m hoping the app can be improve, to at least update if the bus is operating/breakdown/maintenance so I won’t waste my time waiting at the bus stop.

The largest public transport operator in the Klang Valley, Prasarana, has developed a cashless payment app for use at its services, called myrapidTap .

That’s right, the new cashless payment appease developed together with Community Marketplace Technology Sdn. Bhd (CM Tech), and is -as Prasarana claims- “South East Asia’s first Mobility As A Service platform integrating transportation, lifestyle, payments and financial services.”

According to The Edge , Prasarana Group chairman Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said that the myrapidTap application would provide an alternative payment mode for those using Prasarana-operated public services.

View this post on Instagram The mobile application platform release for ‘MyRapidTap’ South East Asia’s first, in collaboration with Prasarana Integrated Development Sdn Bhd (wholly owned subsidiary of Prasarana Malaysia Bhd) has been postponed until further notice. First unveiled in July 2018, the ‘MyRapidTap’ prototype is the first and complete mobile application platform in South East Asia where it integrates transportation, lifestyle, entertainment, financial services and retail purchases. We plan to announce more details concerning the new release date once decided, and our goal of initiating cashless transactional activities as soon as possible remains unchanged. Find out more in the full video: https://youtu.be/J-61WA__Zlk A post shared by Community Marketplace Tech (@cmtech.my) on Apr 17, 2019 at 6:19pm PDT

myrapidTap is set to begin its debut starting with the MRT feeder buses early next year.

Payments using the app is done via a QR-based e-wallet called RapidPay. Users can currently top-up myrapidTap via FPX while other top-up options including debit card, credit card and ShopeePay will be made available next year.

The app can also be used with existing My30 Unlimited Travel Pass, MyCity pass, Touch ‘n Go card and travel token to use Rapid KL’s public transport services, which include LRT, MRT, monorail, Rapid Transit buses and stage buses in the Klang Valley and Selangor.

journey planner rapidkl

Aside from the e-wallet, the myrapidTap app also comes with a journey planner.

However reviews of the app have been less than favourable with several teething issues cropping up, including problems with the journey planner.

Lowyat.net notes that the journey planner has since been removed temporarily from the app.

The tech news site also indicated that the app could be expanding to include eCommerce features such as in-app online shopping.

At the launch of myrapidTap , CM Tech CEO Herbert Poh expressed belief that the app could be a catalyst for economic development and business activities, as well as leveraging small and medium enterprises along the Rapid KL transport lines.

RapidKL: Managing 170 km of transport systems in Kuala Lumpur

September 15, 2022 | Transportation

RapidKL: Managing 170 km of transport systems in Kuala Lumpur

Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd (RapidKL) isa Government of Malaysia-owned company that was established in 2004 in an effort to restructure public transport systems in the Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley area. Currently, it operates three light rail transit (LRT) lines, two mass rapid transit (MRT), a single monorail line, a bus rapid transit (BRT) as well as bus services in the capital city. While RapidKL operates the transit services, its assets are owned by another government-owned company, Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (Prasarana), also formed under the restructuring process.

The current network under RapidKL spans about 170 km and details about the system have been provided in Table 1.

journey planner rapidkl

Although ridership across the RapidKL network suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic, daily ridership has bounced back, with an average of 700,000 passengers using the system during the second quarter  of 2022. The target of 800,000 daily passengers is expected to be reached before the end of 2022.

RapidKL operates around 91.5 km of LRT, 64.5 km of MRT, and 8.6 km of monorail around the Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley area. The average ridership across all six lines that make up the RapidKL network is almost 650,000 daily passengers. Two MRT and LRT lines are also currently under construction.

Ampang Line and Sri Petaling Line

Network: The Ampang Line and the Sri Petaling Line (previously known as STAR LRT) span a total network of 45.1 km in the Klang Valley, operating on a common route from Sentul Timur station to Chan Sow Lin station. The network covers 36 elevated and at-grade stations. Both the lines are a part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System.

Technology: The lines were the first of their kind in Malaysia to operate on standard-gauge tracks and to use semi-automated trains when they were launched in 1996. The lines are equipped with the Thales SelTrac communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling system. Additionally, ASL has also provided its iVENCS 3D control systems.

Expansion plans: There are currently no concrete plans to extend the network any further. The last extension, from Sri Petaling to Putra Heights, opened in July 2016.

Kelana Jaya Line

Network: The Kelana Jaya Line (previously known as the PUTRA LRT) is a medium-capacity LRT line and is a part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System. The 46.4-km line is mostly elevated, with 31 stations located above ground, five stations located underground, and a single at-grade station.

Technology: The system was the first 100 per cent automated and driverless rail line in the Klang Valley when it was opened in 1998. Thales has deployed its SelTrac CBTC signalling system for the line.

Expansion plans: There are currently no concrete plans to extend the network any further. The last extension, from Kelana Jaya to Putra Heights, opened in July 2016.

Kajang Line

Network: The 47-km MRT Kajang Line runs between Kwasa Damansara and Kajang, serving a corridor with 1.2 million residents. It is also a part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System.

Most of the line is elevated, with 22 stations out of 29 stations being above ground, while the remaining seven stations are underground. The average daily ridership on the line is about 215,000 passengers. According to RapidKL, this ridership is inadequate to cover the construction, operation, and maintenance costs. A target of 250,000 daily passengers is required for the line to break even with its operation costs.

Technology: The MRT Kajang Line, previously known as the Sungai Buloh–Kajang Line (SBK Line), is the second fully automated and driverless rail line in the Klang Valley after the Kelana Jaya Line. Bombardier Transportation has supplied its Cityflo 650 CBTC signalling system for the line. It is an automatic train control (ATC) solution which allows for driverless train operations.

Putrajaya Line

Network: The Putrajaya Line, previously known as the Sungai Buloh–Serdang–Putrajaya Line (SSP Line), is the second MRT line in the Klang Valley.

Phase 1 of the line covers the 17.5-km route between Kwasa Damansara and Kampung Batu. It opened to passenger traffic in June 2022.

Technology: Similar to the Kajang and Kelana Jaya lines, operations on the Putrajaya Line are also 100 per cent automated. The line features an automatic train control (ATC) system, which allows for full bi-directional automatic control of trains over each track from the operations control centre (OCC) as well as provides interlocking to prevent conflicting train movements.

The traction and power supply is provided from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to Bulk Supply Substations (BSSs) at 132kV. A 33kV internal distribution network will supply high-voltage AC power to the traction and station power substations.

Expansion plans: Phase 2 will cover the remaining line from Kwasa Damansara to Putrajaya Sentral. It is expected to be operational in January 2023. This will take the total length of the line to 57.7 km. The line will have 37 stations, of which 11 will be underground. The stations are also expected to have feeder bus services.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to have a ridership of 533,000 passengers per day.

KL Monorail

Network: The KL Monorail Line was opened in 2003 and was previously known as the Peoplemover Rapid Transit Line. It is part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System. The 8.6-km line consists of a single dual-way line that links areas of inner Kuala Lumpur that are not served by rail transport. The line has 11 elevated stations.

Technology: In 2014, the signalling system was upgraded from the Ansaldo ATP system to the Thales ETCS Level 1 system; the platform automatic gate system (PAGS) was installed; and new communication systems such as the private automatic branch exchange (PABX), closed circuit television (CCTV), and the passenger information display system (PIDS) were introduced.

Expansion plans: Although multiple expansion routes have been proposed, there are no concrete plans to expand the existing monorail system as yet. The last expansion on the line was completed in 2014, when the fleet was upgraded from two-section carriages to four-section carriages to increase passenger capacity.

The bus service is operated by Rapid Penang, the largest bus operator in the Klang Valley and a wholly owned subsidiary of RapidKL.

The bus service covers the Klang Valley and the Penang and Kuantan areas with a total of 112 normal routes and 69 MRT feeder bus routes.

The fleet comprises nearly 1,600 single- and double-decker buses. The average daily ridership is 300,000 passengers. The buses are a mixed fleet of European and Asian chassis, equipped with modern components and advanced safety features such as the auto interlocking door system. Information on destinations is displayed on the front, side, and rear electronic destination boards. Buses have low floors. Some buses are equipped with ultra-low flooring for disabled-friendly facilities such as a ramp and a wheelchair lock.

To solve first-mile coverage issues, Rapid KL is currently studying the feasibility of reintroducing the minibus service. Between 2019 and 2021, multiple trials were conducted on existing routes to assess the viability of re-deploying these buses. As of August 2022, no further announcements have been made.

Electric buses

In April 2022, Rapid KL commenced a three-month electric bus trial using four battery-operated BYD vehicles in an attempt to replace its diesel bus fleet with electric buses. The trial run is part of Rapid Bus’s Electrification Bus Programme transformation plan. The plan will be implemented in stages and is estimated to be completed by 2030.

Some electric buses are already in use on the BRT Sunway Line. There are currently 15 operational electric buses in RapidKL’s fleet. Most of these use the overnight charging method. However, to transition all of its existing vehicles  to electric vehicles by 2030, the rate of procurement and deployment of electric buses needs to be increased.

BRT Sunway Line

The Sunway Line is the world’s first completely electric BRT system. The 5.4-km route has seven stations across the south-eastern suburbs of Petaling Jaya. The BRT buses have an exclusive right-of-way on an elevated guideway that is not shared with normal road traffic. The network is served by 15 electric buses, with a peak-hour frequency of 4 minutes on weekdays.

When the line opened in 2015, there was a push-back from commuters due to high fares. Several trials of free travel and half-price fares were conducted with positive results. During a free weekend travel trial conducted in 2015, ridership increased substantially to almost 12,000 hourly passengers.

In 2018, fares were reduced by 20 per cent. In 2019, the company introduced the My100 monthly pass to further reduce costs. This led to an overall 40 per cent growth in ridership, with the BRT recording almost 17,000 daily passengers in 2019.

To further increase ridership and to achieve 5,200 hourly passengers on the line by 2035, more measures for fare reduction will be needed for the BRT system.

Other services

The Touch ‘n’ Go smart card Acts as the common cashless ticketing system for all rail and bus lines in the Klang Valley. The card uses a MIFARE Classic microchip technology, allowing for shorter processing times.

The RapidKL concession card is also available for students, the elderly, and disabled people. It provides a 50 per cent discount on all train and bus fares.

Partnership with Moovit

In August 2020, RapidKL partnered with Moovit to provide multimodal journey planning and real-time bus information to commuters in the Klang Valley and in the Kuala Lumpur region. The Moovit app provides users real-time arrival information about RapidKL’s buses and trains as well as service alerts to help commuters avoid disruptions on usual routes, making journey planning easier and more seamless.

Increasing ridership: A Covid-19 recovery response

In June 2022, RapidKL launched its one-month free ride campaign across its transport networks in an attempt to improve ridership after the Covid-19-related slowdown. The initiative covered MRT, LRT, BRT, Monorail, and RapidKL buses.

During this period, ridership across all of RapidKL’s services increased by 16 per cent, to 765,743 daily passengers.

For rail services, there was an 18 per cent increase, recording 607,786 more passengers a day. BRT and bus services saw an 11 per cent increase, with 157,957 more daily passengers. Out of the total, about 68,304 additional active riders used RapidKL’s services.

However, sustaining the increased ridership from these programmes remain an obstacle in the long run.  Commuters feedback on the RapidKl rail services have mentioned that issues related to last-mile connectivity, train frequency, and service breakdown still remain.

Future services

Two rail lines are currently under construction. When completed, both lines will also be operated by RapidKL. A third line is under planning.

Table 2 provides details about the planned systems of RapidKL.

Shah Alam Line

Network: The Shah Alam Line, also known as LRT3, is a medium-capacity LRT line that will serve the western section of the Klang Valley. The system will be fully automatic and will be a part of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System. It is a key project aimed at increasing the modal share of public transport in the capital to 40 per cent by 2030. It is currently under construction.

The line will be mostly elevated, with only 2 km of the total line being underground. There will be 21 stations, all of them located above ground, as well as five planned stations to meet future needs. Construction is expected to cost USD4.07 billion. Route length, station details, and cost can change in the future.

Details about the rolling stock of the Shah Alam Line are given in Image 1.

Putrajaya Line – Phase 2

Work is currently ongoing on the second phase of the MRT Putrajaya Line, covering the section between Kwasa Damansara and Putrajaya Sentral in the Klang Valley. Progress on the 34.7-km line is on schedule for the expected opening in January 2023. As of June 2022, almost 98 per cent of the work had been completed.

Network: The second phase will include the construction of 26 stations. Of these stations, one will be half-sunken, 14 will be elevated, and 11 will be underground.

Technology: Operations on the Putrajaya Line will be 100 per cent automated. The line will employ an automatic train control (ATC) system, which allows for full bi-directional automatic control of trains over each track from the operations control centre (OCC) as well as provides interlocking to prevent conflicting train movements.

The line will feature driverless automated 80 (20 four-carriage) Hyundai Rotem trains, with a capacity of 1,200 passengers. Trains will run at a frequency of 4 minutes (peak hours) and 6 minutes (off peak hours).

Details about the rolling stock of the Putrajaya Line are given in Image 2.

Contractors: Details about some of the key contractors are given in Table 4.

journey planner rapidkl

Feeder buses: Work on the second phase will also include the deployment of Midi diesel buses operating from Serdang Depot. Plans to deploy electric buses specifically for Putrajaya with the option for implementing additional Cyberjaya City Centre routes are also being considered.

Circle Line

The Circle Line, also known as MRT3, is currently under planning. The fully automated and driverless MRT3 Line will run along the perimeter of Kuala Lumpur.

Construction work is scheduled to commence in 2023, with partial operations expected to begin in 2028. The line will be fully operational by 2030. The project will require an investment of RM31 billion, with an additional RM8.4 billion required for land acquisition. The project will be primarily funded through the Government of Malaysia’s Sukuk Programme, although green sukuk (Shariah-compliant investments in renewable energy and other environmental assets) are also being considered.

The timeline for the Circle Line project is given in Image 3.

Image 3: Timeline of the Circle Line/MRT3 project

journey planner rapidkl

Network: The 50.8-km-long Circle Line will be mostly elevated. It will have 31 stations, out of which seven will be underground. The route is subject to change in the future as work commences on the line.

Once completed, MRT3 will form the loop line of the Klang Valley Integrated Transit System.

Technology: Details regarding the signalling system and the rolling stock will be released once the tenders have been awarded.

Contractors: In August 2022, a JV company comprising HSS Integrated Sdn Bhd and HSS Engineering Sdn Bhd was appointed as the project management consultant (PMC) for the MRT3 Circle Line project.

Contracts for work on the line will be awarded by the fourth quarter of 2022.

Moving forward

In the last year, RapidKL services have experienced significant service disruptions. These include a major accident in 2021 when a manually driven LRT train collided with an automated train on the Kelana Jaya Line caused by driver negligence. In May 2022, the line faced four disruptions due to technical difficulties, while the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines experienced at least one service disruption each due to technical and power issues. Between April and May 2022, there were a total of 38 service disruptions caused by emergency brake deployment, with most of the issues involving tachometers and electronic units.

In light of this, the Government of Malaysia has allocated RM1.25 billion to improve the safety and service of RapidKL’s LRT systems. Out of the budget, RM450 million has been earmarked for 23 initiatives to improve the Kelana Jaya Line. These initiatives include a new system that detects stationary trains remotely, visible track markers and signages in tunnels, manual train operation within tunnels using two drivers, and periodic reports on safety issues. RapidKL is also working on migrating all radio communications to a digital system.

Around RM800 million has been allocated to finance level four maintenance, repair, and overhaul of the Bombardier 818 rolling stock. This will cover 112 cars (28 four-carriages cars). The average age of the rolling stock is 15 years, and the mid-life refurbishment will extend the lifespan and performance of the coaches.

Additionally, 140 tachometers will also be replaced, which is expected to cost RM5 million. There are plans to improve crisis management operations to reduce the effect of disruptions in train service on passengers. Several buses will be deployed at strategic stations such as Bangsar and Pasar Seni, to be used in case of a contingency or if train service is delayed by more than 15 minutes.

Similar refurbishments are also required for the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines, which are the oldest RapidKL systems. However, there are no concrete plans to overhaul the vehicles or the safety systems in the near future.

How to train for a marathon on vacation

Running in a new place can help break up the monotony of marathon training.

Micah Ling was all set to run her first marathon. After training for 15 weeks, just two shy of her training goal, the 43-year-old and her husband decided to take a vacation to Mexico. That’s when things went south.

Ling’s plan was to take her 22-mile runs on the road. But unlike the rocky dirt paths in her small Colorado mountain town, the trails she found in Baja California were sandy. She began experiencing pain, and by marathon day, she couldn’t run at all. A physical therapist diagnosed her with peroneal longus tendinitis, the consequence of overuse while running on the unfamiliar terrain.

“I had no idea it would result in an injury,” she says. Her symptoms lingered, but she hopes to be back to running all summer.

If you’re training for a marathon, you may get bored by pounding the same pavement day in and day out. Runners should take precautions to avoid injury, but there are ways to safely and effectively train for a marathon while out of town.

Do it right, and it can even be fun.

Rest up — or adjust your schedule

According to Abby Omerza, an RRCA -certified running coach and ACSM -certified exercise physiologist with countless marathons, ultramarathons, and triathlons under her belt, the simplest solution is to use a short vacation as a recovery period.

Training plans can be adjusted; you can tack on additional time to compensate for a milder week and end up with the same total mileage by race day. Taking a few days off from strenuous exercise won’t set you back.

However, even at the most relaxed pace, you’ll still be running, so “look for a place that’s going to be safe,” Omerza says.

Pick a destination with a variety of low-traffic areas, such as parks, where cars aren’t a concern but you’re also not alone.

And if you’re planning on doing long runs, research routes in advance to ensure that you’ll always be in a place with access to bathrooms, water, cell service and somewhere to seek help in case of emergency.

To eliminate some of the anxieties that may come from being in unfamiliar territory, see if you can join a local running club or book a vacation with a company such as Rogue Expeditions , which will plan your itinerary in its entirety so all you have to do is show up at the airport.

Plan for your new environment

What if you’re going to be away for more than a few weeks and can’t write off your entire vacation as a recovery period?

The first question you should ask is: How similar is your destination to your standard training conditions? A massive change in temperature, humidity, or altitude probably will hinder your ability to maintain your usual pace or mileage, so you’ll have to add time at the beginning of your training plan to allow yourself a buffer upon arrival.

“Travel is a big stressor on your body, and if you push yourself too hard to stick to ‘the plan,’ you might actually end up setting yourself back because you won’t be able to recover,” says Ashley Mateo, a Denver-based runner.

Since 2015, Mateo has run 15 marathons including the six World Marathon Majors (Boston, Berlin, Chicago, London, New York and Tokyo) and has trained everywhere from Finland to Indonesia to the United Arab Emirates.

“If you miss a workout or two because you’re tired or a cool opportunity comes up, don’t beat yourself up about it,” Mateo says.

Running while sightseeing

If none of this sound appealing, it may be time to reframe your attitude about running. Instead of viewing it as a chore to power through, call it the main event .

Mauricio Sandoval, a 36-year-old runner based in Manhattan, travels to sightsee on foot while prepping for a big race in his destination. When he was training for the 2023 New York City Marathon, he completed half marathons in Mexico City, Guatemala City and Amsterdam as a way to incorporate long runs into his schedule while soaking in the atmosphere.

“I like big urban races, which include landmarks, scenic views and great crowds,” Sandoval says. He looks for “a race that will allow me to explore the city from a different perspective.”

Sandoval notes that some races have courses take you to parts of the city that are normally off-limits because they’re reserved for car traffic or because they’re typically not open to the public.

“For Amsterdam, the race is a big urban race that finishes in the Olympic Stadium,” he said. “DJ Ferry Corsten was playing in the stadium. So far, this has been my favorite half marathon.”

A Trans Pennine Express train shortly after departing Manchester Piccadilly station at dusk.

What is Labour’s plan for rail travel and will it make tickets cheaper?

Party wants to fully nationalise train network within five years of coming to power, in ‘biggest rail reform for a generation’

Labour has made one of its most radical proposals yet in the run-up to an election campaign: to fully nationalise the train network within five years of coming to power.

The party has pledged to guarantee the cheapest fares as part of “the biggest reform of our railways for a generation”, bringing all passenger rail into national ownership under the Great British Railways (GBR) body.

So, how difficult would the plan be to enact and what does it mean for passengers?

How would Labour’s plan for Great British Railways change the way the trains are run?

The headline change is nationalisation: the ambition that all passenger train operations, at least, should return to public ownership. But the wider aim is that control of trains and tracks – “wheels and steel”, as some put it – is brought back under one unified structure, at arm’s length from the government.

The actual railway infrastructure is already managed by the state-owned Network Rail, since the disastrous tenure of Railtrack in the early days of privatisation, and train operations in Scotland, Wales and a large chunk of England are in public ownership. So a fully renationalised railway (bar the rolling stock and freight) is not as big a step as it may once have sounded – and arguably the pragmatic extension of the plans drawn up by the Conservatives in 2021, to end the fragmentation and waste in the system.

How long will the changes take?

Labour said it would get the ball rolling on day one. Given the years it has taken for the Conservatives’ GBR plans to crystallise into a draft bill that has scant chance of passing before an election, supporters of the changes would be forgiven for not holding their breath for legislation. But some of the spadework has been done by the GBR transition team, and Labour will be hoping for a more stable tenancy in Downing Street to see the policy through. It is, it stresses, a long-term plan.

As far as nationalisation of the train operators goes, most of the contracts of remaining operators will expire naturally within the next term, while the government can exercise break clauses in others, such as Avanti West Coast and Cross Country.

What would the trains look like?

Eventually, they would all be GBR-branded trains rather than the individual liveries and logos of different operators. Labour hopes that this will make things simpler for passengers, avoiding confusion over ticketing, as well as cutting costs.

Would it make train travel cheaper?

Possibly, but not for a while yet. Labour says it wants to make the railway more affordable but has definitively avoided any pledges to cut or even freeze the overall level of fares.

However, it believes that its plans will eventually save £2.2bn a year by avoiding the duplication and bureaucracy brought on by the current system, where the Department for Transport tightly controls and specifies contracts for the private firms, and reams of staff are employed in back-end roles. That could give ministers some scope to use more of the billions in annual taxpayer subsidy to bring fares down long-term.

What about this best-price guarantee?

Make that an “ambition”, according to the policy document . It’s testament to the complexity, or occasional absurdity, of UK rail fares that even after years of industry focus on improving the system, renationalising looks an easier promise than telling a passenger they’ve paid the right amount.

Things can be improved, Labour says, as contactless tap-in and tap-out payments extend through more and more of the country, opening up the possibility of a Transport for London-style system, where fares are streamlined and automatically capped or refunded.

The shadow transport secretary, Louise Haigh, pointedly chose the headquarters of Trainline in central London to launch her plans on Thursday, paying tribute to the travel app firm’s “relentless focus on passengers [and] improving their experience”. Trainline shares fell 10%, even though Labour says it has no plans to replace the private firm with a single state retailer.

But given that the app’s business depends on people paying extra to cut through the railway’s confusing fares, fragmentation and lack of a decent central ticketing site, Trainline shareholder nerves might be taken as a vote of confidence that GBR will improve the industry’s own offering.

How else might passengers benefit?

Labour says it would leave the running of the railway to the experts – but the transport secretary would set strategy and take on the role of passenger-in-chief, and the industry would not be “marking its own homework”.

The plan aims to strengthen the voice of passengers by rolling together the various bodies currently meant to be standing up for them – the watchdog Transport Focus and the little-known Rail Ombudsman, as well as a few divisions of the Office of Rail and Road.

What will happen to the private operators?

Their representatives at Rail Partners warn that it will be “messy” and the railway will lose their expertise. But the people actually running train operators, right up to the managing directors, have typically stayed in post with a different coloured badge when the owning groups moved on, and passengers at say, Southeastern or LNER may not feel life is very different. Firms once regarded as pillars of privatised rail such as Stagecoach, National Express (now Mobico) and Virgin have long exited UK rail already, pursuing business elsewhere.

Traveler reimbursement is based on the location of the work activities and not the accommodations, unless lodging is not available at the work activity, then the agency may authorize the rate where lodging is obtained.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."

Per diem localities with county definitions shall include "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city as well as the boundaries of the listed counties, including independent entities located within the boundaries of the key city and the listed counties (unless otherwise listed separately)."

When a military installation or Government-related facility (whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and/or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.

Meals & Incidentals

The separate amounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner listed in the chart are provided should you need to deduct any of those meals from your trip voucher. For example, if your trip includes meals that are already paid for by the government (such as through a registration fee for a conference), you will need to deduct those meals from your voucher. Refer to Section 301-11.18 of the Federal Travel Regulation for specific guidance on deducting these amounts from your per diem reimbursement claims for meals furnished to you by the government. Other organizations may have different rules that apply for their employees; please check with your organization for more assistance.

2024 NFL draft parking: You better have a plan if you're coming to downtown Detroit

journey planner rapidkl

If you're used to slipping downtown for a game and finding street parking near the venue, you'll need a different approach if you're coming to NFL draft events this week.

Parking spots will be at a premium anywhere near the draft footprint, which is why Detroit city officials and others involved in planning for the event have been advising folks to consider public transit and park-and-ride options instead.

The draft, which runs this Thursday through Saturday, is expected to attract about 300,000 people to Detroit, and getting around in a private vehicle will be significantly more challenging than normal because of street closures. Street parking won't be allowed in many areas.

But don’t let parking paralysis dissuade you. Just make a plan.

The Free Press spoke with Sam Krassenstein, Detroit's chief of infrastructure, about parking options and gathered answers to some common questions readers might have.

Here's a guide to avoiding the worst of parking downtown during the NFL draft:

Make a plan

We already said to have a plan, but it bears repeating. Lots of streets will be closed, and parking rules will be strictly enforced, according to Krassenstein.

What happens if you park improperly?

More: Detroit streets you can't drive on, cross or use for parking — you will be towed

Tickets and towing are what's in store for parking violations. Krassenstein said to watch for the signage, which should be very clear in announcing a "tow-away zone."

But you're not going to get away with just a $45 ticket (Detroit residents might be able to qualify for a discounted fine if they pre-register ), "we're going to tow your car," Krassenstein said.

So tack on a couple of hundred dollars and the extra hassle.

Krassenstein said he expects some folks who regularly try to push their luck with parking during games and events to try it again as the draft gets underway, but this is likely to be the week that luck runs out.

To find available off-street parking, try the Park Detroit or Park Whiz smartphone apps, where you can find and book parking ahead of time. Be prepared to pay more than you normally would. A quick search of the Park Detroit app for a couple of hours in downtown Detroit on Thursday showed some lower-price offerings in the area, $30 and $40, but others that were higher, at $75, even $125.

Beware of scams

The Office of Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an advisory on Tuesday warning those looking for private parking at the draft to beware, noting that "scammers take advantage of these events to sell parking spaces for lots they don’t have authority over, which could lead to cars being ticketed, towed or, even worse, stolen." The news release encouraged residents to ask for a receipt or parking ticket upon payment and to never give their keys to an attendant unless valet signs are posted and they've confirmed valet service details ahead of time.

More: The OnePass app is your ticket to the 2024 NFL draft in Detroit: What to know

The release also warned of a scam involving bad actors issuing fake but authentic-looking parking tickets. "Nessel reminds residents to visit that municipality’s website directly or to call the court and verify the existence of the ticket before following the web or QR code directions."

The Better Business Bureau has a web page with more tips on avoiding the scam.

Fan shuttles are one option

Krassenstein suggested fan shuttles from three locations as a good bet that would be convenient and priced reasonably, with shuttles scheduled to run regularly between the parking areas and the draft entrance location drop-offs, 11 a.m.-12:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday.

Here are those shuttle parking locations and costs:

  • WSU Structure 1, 450 W. Palmer Ave. — $10 per car (first come, first serve)
  • Bagley Mobility Hub, 1501 Wabash St. — $15 (prepay recommended). Link to prepay here (add $1.50 service fee).
  • River East Garage, 214 Rivard St. — $15 per car (prepay recommended). Link to prepay here (add 99-cent service fee).

Park and ride is also available

In addition, numerous park-and-ride options are available for QLINE and SMART.

Detroit's streetcar, which is currently free to ride, has several park-and-ride lots available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cost is $5.

  • WSU Lot 12 — Harper & Woodward, near the Amsterdam station
  • New Center Garage — 116 Lothrop, near the Grand Blvd station
  • Cass Garage — 6540 Cass Ave., near the Baltimore station
  • John R and Piquette — 6230 John R., near the Amsterdam station

More: A guide to breakfast, lunch and dinner near downtown Detroit during the NFL draft

Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation buses are scheduled to leave park-and-ride lots once per hour between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day of the draft, according to the release. Buses are to return from downtown (Bricktown People Mover Station for east-side routes and Fort/Cass station for west-side routes) once per hour 1-11:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1-7:30 p.m. Saturday. One-way fares are $2 per adult, $1 per child (5-18) and 50 cents for those older than 65 or who have a disability.

Here are the SMART park-and-ride lot locations:

  • Great Lakes Crossing, 4000 Baldwin, Auburn Hills

Working Parents, Plan for the Week with This Simple Exercise

  • Avni Patel Thompson

journey planner rapidkl

To avoid surprises and decision fatigue, take 20 minutes to preview your family’s commitments.

As work travel and hours in the office mount, work parents are feeling the logistical challenges of making every week happen — from kid pickup and dropoff and sports practice to meal planning and doctor’s appointments. The main difficulties lie in managing the firehose of information, coping with decision fatigue, and dealing with surprises like an illness or a forgotten event. The best approach for avoiding — or mitigating — these obstacles is the weekly preview: A planning session between the core adults in the family each week to go over what’s coming. The week’s plan is documented and discussed, highlighting variances from typical weeks and indicating back-up plans for particularly tricky spots.

It’s been nearly four years since we first met Amir and Ria as they were navigating the early months of Covid with two jobs and two young children at home.

Visa-free travel from South Africa may end under immigration plan

Move comes less than three years after requirement for visas for travel from south africa was abolished.

journey planner rapidkl

Taoiseach Simon Harris: The Government will 'do more' to reduce the number of applicants for international protection coming over the Border. Photograph: Sam Boal/Collins Photos

Ministers will discuss a possible move to end visa-free travel from South Africa , as the Government’s efforts to tighten immigration and asylum processes continue.

The expected move comes less than three years after the need for visas for travel from South Africa was abolished and results from officials’ warnings that people from Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo are travelling on South African passports.

Figures released by the Department of Justice show that the authorities are currently processing the applications of 198 people who arrived on South African passports this year – just over 3 per cent of the total.

It is expected to be discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet committee on migration and integration next Thursday.

On Wednesday, Taoiseach Simon Harris told a Dáil committee the Government would “do more” to reduce the number of applicants for international protection (IP) – or asylum – who were coming over the Border with Northern Ireland.

[  Migration system may be tightened over spike in international protection applicants  ]

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee told a Dáil committee on Tuesday that more than 80 per cent of IP applicants were arriving in the State via Northern Ireland.

Mr Harris told the Oireachtas Committee that oversees the Departments of the Taoiseach, Finance and Public Expenditure: “We have to do more in this space. This wasn’t always the way. And, in fact, this is a relatively recent phenomenon”.

Mr Harris said measures introduced at airports had reduced the number of asylum seekers arriving, but that greater co-operation was needed between Garda and the Police Service of Northern Ireland on the issue.

Earlier Ms McEntee told RTÉ that more than 5,000 people had applied for asylum in Ireland this year, and that half of that number were “secondary movements”, where people come from another “safe” country to claim asylum in Ireland.

Elsewhere, the Government has written to church dioceses asking them to make buildings or lands available to help accommodate asylum seekers as part of a renewed push to find beds.

In 2022, the Government sought church lands to accommodate those fleeing the war in Ukraine but has now asked dioceses for assistance in helping house asylum seekers. This comes amid ongoing pressure to house 1,600 unaccommodated single males.

[  ‘This is for our town’: Ballina locals protest against plans to house families seeking international protection  ]

Minister of State Joe O’Brien wrote to the dioceses in early March as well as seeking more local authority lands or buildings from the County and City Management Association (CCMA).

However, he was told that local authority’s ability to provide additional buildings was “severely limited”.

Mr O’Brien said: “Given the grave situation in terms of the number of people unaccommodated – many of whom are forced to sleep on the streets with all the obvious danger that entails – I feel it is incumbent on me to do everything within my power to try to assist the Trojan efforts of Minister O’Gorman and our officials within the Department of Integration.

[  Over 20,000 international protection applicants could apply for asylum in Ireland during 2024  ]

“On that basis I wrote to both the CCMA and each diocese, asking them to give serious consideration to their buildings and/or land portfolio with a view to trying to identify anything at all that might help alleviate the situation – even temporarily while we move towards the medium-term plan set out by Minister O’Gorman.”
