Voyagers K9 Apparel Custom Dog Rain Coat

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Voyagers K9 Custom Dog Rain Coat has been a solid choice for our canine companions so far. It is rugged, holds tight as the dogs go off trail, and has been effective at shucking water and keeping Rocket, my Irish Setter mix, dry The rain coat is a good option to keep the elements at bay while hiking with your dog. Voyagers K9 also offers the Dog Rain Coat in 21 breed-specific options. This is an initial review and I'll continue testing this custom jacket on my dog in the coming months and will update its long-term use as we experience more rain and colder temperatures.

  • Doesn't slide from side to side
  • Does not impede the dog's movement
  • Hook and loop holds firm
  • Allows plenty of room for Rover to answer "nature's call"
  • Potential issue of the loose fabric catching on brush
  • Fabric wants to bunch on the shoulders under a pack.

Let's cut to the chase—we LOVE our fur babies. C'mon, you know we spoil them—and would move mountains to take care of our pets. They are an integral part of our lives, and as outdoorsy people, we have them tag along (and how many of our dogs argue at that?). Voyagers K9 offers products for those of us who want to take care of our pets.

Voyagers K9 Apparel is a cottage company which started in 1993 because its founders couldn't find garments for their greyhounds. It has since expanded beyond greyhounds into a unique business that strives to make high-end, hard-working garments for dogs in 21 breed-specific designs, from beagles to whippets.

Voyagers K9 offers both "off the rack" breed-specific garments as well as custom sizes. It is obvious they have gone through several permutations to refine and fine tune their dog apparel.

The company's wide variety of offerings includes booties, winter coats, tummy warmers, and raincoats, all in a variety of colors. I picked green for the Custom Dog Rain Coat because I like it against my boy's copper color.

IMG_8581.jpg

Voyagers K9's Dog Rain Coat is available in 21 breed-specific options (for example, German Shorthaired Pointer, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Great Dane, Jack Russell Terrier, Vizsla, etc...). Each of those breed-specific jackets come in their own four sizes (S-XL). If your dog isn't one of those purebreds, you can also order the Rain Coat (or Winter Coat or Tummy Warmer) as a custom option, which is what I did for my Irish Setter mix. Custom options start at $115, slightly higher than Voyagers K9's "off the rack" prices. This is a luxury item though, and if it’s effective and durable, people will pay for the quality.

Getting my dog fitted involved entering numerous measurements (neck, length, chest, chest width, waist, underbelly), weight, gender, and a side profile photo of him on the brand's website. The company also offers videos and tips for measuring your dog, and can be contacted if you have questions. As mentioned, I chose green out of the eight color options.

Voyagers K9's garments are then made by hand in Washington state by its own seamstress. According to the brand, for custom garments its seamstress creates a unique coat based on your dog's unique measurements. They request the side profile picture of each dog to help the seamstress understand the curvature of your dog's chest and create a custom fit. I received the Custom Dog Rain Coat two weeks later.

The Dog Rain Coat is very attractive and has a sleek design. It's a full coverage coat that extends from  head to tail and has an integrated, adjustable hood.  The skirted material shucks brush and water. The reflective piping around the edges is a nice safety feature and gives the hem an attractive finish.

Voyagers K9's Rain Coat is really well thought out and sits well on our dogs. I even had my daughter fit it on her more slightly built Irish Setter mix, and it fit him fairly well for a custom-made jacket.

Leash & Harness  Openings

The Rain Coat has an opening at the back of the neck for a leash to pass through. I pulled on the leash, had my dog walk around, and generally observed how the leash behaved. The opening is perfectly placed. I will update this post as I see long term if the lead wears on the fabric.

You can also order  the  Rain Coat with an optional customizable harness opening, if your dog wears a body harness. I did not.

IMG_8687.jpg

The Integrated hood is fully adjustable and extends up and over the dog's neck and ears for extra protection in the rain.

Wearability & Durability

Setting the coat up was pretty easy. The cape-like style sits very naturally and intuitively on my dog's back. The worst part was getting his curls out of the way of the hook-and-loop straps underneath.

I was able to get this on him quite snuggly. I was worried that he would roll and paw at the coat, but he seemed to not even notice it once it was on.

The coat did not slide around or shift to one side or the other. A very effective fitting system is the use of counterbalance straps. A hook-and-loop strap system wraps underneath the dog's belly from both sides— the front strap attaches left to right, and the back strap attaches right to left—to  prevent shifting.

The strap are also placed out of the way of my dog's legs, yet located at good spots on his body so the coat rides snuggly yet comfortably. The coat also has extra pleated fabric in front to accommodate his stride.

My dog didn't even mind having the hood up. I can see where in really wet and cold weather this is a nice feature that will keep rain or snow from seeping down his neck.

We have been at a big of a disadvantage for testing in the rain so far with it being the start of summer in the desert. However, I had a window of a cooler morning with showers and took my dog tromping out into the brush on my property.

I intentionally took him through high grass and sagebrush, because I wanted to see how the coat would do during bushwhacking. As my dog plowed through the brush the coat just slid through the branches of the sagebrush. I watched carefully, as I wanted to see if the straps or garment would get hung up, or if it would tear or abrade.

After we tromped around, I did not see any signs of wear. Granted, the coat was brand new, but the stiff sagebrush would certainly challenge weak material. I was pleased at the performance and will keep an eye on how the jacket holds up in the long-term.

Adding a Dog Pack

The raincoat is also designed to allow your dog to wear a pack on top of it. The website is clear that the pack will not fit correctly if it is worn beneath the coat.

My dog's pack generally did OK on top of the coat. I found that it bunched above his shoulders, and I was little concerned at how it may fit around his front shoulders. Later, I will put a full pack on him with the raincoat. I just wasn't going to ask him to do that yet since it's been 90 degrees out. I will update this review when I do so.

See the pictures below for the initial pack fitting:

IMG_8692.jpg

The Rain Coat is made from a waterproof  Taslan nylon with DWR finish and has a mesh lining.  Since we didn't get heavy rain during initial testing, I took my dog to the hose, which took a minute for him to let me "rain on him" since he loves the hose.

Here, I really wanted to challenge the water resistance of the coat.

I found that for the most part, the fabric shucked the water. I did see a couple of spots where it seemed wetted out on the outside, but it was not.

According to the manufacturer: " Water beads up and rolls off DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish before penetrating Taslan fabric. Even after repeated washing, this material retains its superiority as a waterproof fabric."

The coat can be machine washed and dried. The manufacturer  also recommends washing it with a DWR treatment, like Nikwax, when needed, perhaps once a year,  to keep the fabric's waterproofing effective.

IMG_8593.jpg

Since he is a thinner coated Irish Setter mix, I look forward to using this jacket on my dog during the cold months ahead. During a weekend last winter I ended up using his backpack as his jacket as he had gotten quite cool the day before. I can see how this jacket would be very effective for thin coated dogs since they wet out pretty quickly, and can get shivery at the end of a wet day.

(Voyager K9 also makes winter coats, plus tummy warmers that can be layered under a coat.)

Personal Reactions

This company loves dogs. Voyagers K9 originated in initially taking care of greyhounds, but expanded. With their breed-specific options they obviously understand dog anatomy, high quality care for dogs, and dog owners' needs and wants. While their products come at a higher price, I think it's appropriate for a hand-made, cottage company with great customer service.

I really like the Voyagers K9 Dog Rain Coat. The fit, design, layers, and features make this jacket a choice dog owners need to consider. As for Rocket, the classical conditioning happened—when he sees this jacket, he knows fun is coming!

I'll continue testing this custom jacket on my dog in the coming months and will update its long-term use as we experience more rain and colder temperatures here in Washington State.

IMG-9093.jpg

My dog is a thinner coated Irish Setter mix. I have used two kinds of dog packs, and my daughter, whom I hike with often, has used jackets for her thin-haired Irish Setter mix.

Gear Review: Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat

Disclaimer: Voyagers K9 Apparel sent me a Winter Coat to test and review. I have purchased other jackets from the brand previously because I love the quality and design. I test my products thoroughly and in various conditions and always give my honest thoughts.

In search of a functional, high quality, durable winter coat for your dog? The Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat is hands down my favorite winter coat for dogs.

When we hit the trails in the cold winter months, I know this jacket will not only keep Sitka warm and dry, but it will also keep him clean, won’t restrict his movement, and is made by a brand that I trust.

I genuinely have nothing negative to say about the Voyager K9 Apparel Winter Coat for dogs. The steep price may come as a shock, but a read through my gushing review will show you why it pays to spend more.

About Voyagers K9 Apparel

When Voyagers K9 Apparel founders couldn’t find a dog jacket that fit their Greyhound’s unique body shape properly, so they decided to design their own.

While the company started out making jackets just for Greyhounds, they later expanded their product line to include a variety of popular breeds.

Today, they make a variety of stylish and functional dog coats in different sizes and colors for over 20 different breeds.

Don’t see your breed listed? They’ll make you a custom dog jacket to fit your dog perfectly.

All of the jackets are hand made in Washington State and the team has been making them for nearly 30 years.

Who is the Voyagers K9 Winter Coat for?

The Winter Coat is ideal for dogs who join their humans for winter activities . Because of the design, dogs have full range of motion, while still protecting areas sensitive to cold, like the belly and chest.

The coat adds a layer of warmth and protection from elements in temperatures below 40°, keeping dogs warm and dry in the sleet, snow, wind, and rain.

Whether you live in a wet winter environment or a bitingly cold location, the Winter Coat will ensure that your dog stays comfortable, no matter the weather.

I have three jackets from Voyagers K9 and there’s a reason for it. They are among my favorite winter gear for dogs and they perform exactly as I need them to.

The Voyagers K9 Winter Coat is a well designed jacket for dogs.

The Perfect Winter Coat for Adventure Dogs

The Voyagers K9 Apparel Winter Coat is functional, attractive, and well-constructed.

The hybrid jacket combines soft fleece with a waterproof outer shell to provide both comfort and protection from the elements.

Additional features include:

  • Windproof and waterproof
  • Polartec fleece lining
  • Stain-resistant
  • Adjustable neck gator
  • Reflective piping
  • Machine washable
  • Handmade in the USA

For dogs that get especially cold, the Winter Coat is designed to fit over the Tummy Warmer to provide additional warmth in extreme temperatures.

This is a winter dog jacket that performs exceptionally in every category I could ask for in a piece of outdoor gear.

The Voyagers K9 Winter Coat is Easy to Put on Your Dog

Unlike other dog jackets that require legs to go in sleeves and adjustments in various spots, Voyagers K9 coats are a breeze to put on and take off your dog.

It literally takes seconds.

I just get Sitka’s head through the neck hole and secure the belly strap.

That’s it!

While I do own other winter dog coats that perform well in the elements, I almost always reach for my Voyagers K9 Apparel coats because they are so easy to put on.

The Voyagers K9 Winter Coat is Designed for Mobility

The design of the Winter Coat allows for maximum mobility whether we’re trail running , snow shoeing, hiking, or cross country skiing.

Because there are no restrictive straps or sleeves, dogs can move freely while staying warm.

The Voyagers K9 Winter Coat allow for full range of motion

Custom Gear that Fits

The entire company exists because of the owners’ inability to find a jacket to fit their Greyhounds.

They soon realized that many dog owners struggled to find jackets that fit their own dogs.

Voyagers K9 recognizes that there is no one-size-fits all for dogs.

You’ll find 20 common breeds listed on the site, however, if you have a breed that is not listed, they’ll make you a custom jacket for your dog.

All of the Voyagers K9 jackets I have are custom-designed and fit Sitka absolutely perfectly.

Voyagers K9 Apparel jackets are designed in such a way that the fabric provides optimal coverage based on each individual dog’s size and proportions.

You won’t have to constantly adjust the jacket while you hike because it stays in place.

Made using High Quality Materials

The designer and seamstress who hand makes each and every Voyagers K9 Apparel jacket has over 30 years of experience.

The brand uses high quality materials that are easy to clean, machine washable, stylish, stain-resistant, and made to last.

Reinforced stitching means the jacket will serve for many winters to come.

Sitka wears his Voyagers K9 Winter Coat on a chilly hike.

You Get What You Pay For

Depending on the size and shape of your dog, and whether you decide to order a custom jacket, the price may seem a bit steep.

Know this: You get what you pay for.

When you purchase a Winter Coat from Voyagers K9 Apparel, you get:

  • A perfectly-fitted coat that keeps your dog warm
  • A durable handmade winter dog coat
  • A stylish and functional dog jacket that will not restrict your dog’s movement
  • A jacket that is a breeze to put on your dog

Voyagers K9 Gives back

You know how much I love a company that incorporates giving back as part of their business plan and mission.

Voyagers K9 Apparel donates a percentage of each purchase to a dog adoption agency of the buyer’s choice.

Voyager K9 deletes bad reviews

Thursday 1st of December 2022

I wish I could say the same... but the customer service with this company is the worst I've ever seen. They've gone out of their way to delete bad reviews off of their website, google, etc. I'm so disappointed in how poorly their customers are treated for a coat that ended up being $350 CAD.

Oooh boo. This is super disappointing to hear and I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience with them that ended up costing you way more than necessary for a dog coat. Thanks for the heads up.

About Voyagers K9 Apparel

Voyagers K9 Apparel came to life when the owners of greyhounds realized that nothing seems to fit their dogs correctly. They started their breed-specific clothing line, and today they have designs for more than 20 breeds and make a custom coat for others as well. Their quality products come in many colors, and they are made based on the need of your dog for the comfortable fit!

The details of the Voyagers K9 Apparel Rain Coat

First of all, we love that this coat has a unique design for each breed. For example, for dogs with long tails, they make it longer on the back to provide some protection for the tail as well. For dogs with short tails, they leave the coat shorter, so it is comfortable for them too.

The front of the coat has some access material to provide enough room for the legs when the dog is running around.

The material of this coat is Nylon-Taslan, which is waterproof but yet breathable. The soft mesh material lining on the inside of the jacket protects the dog’s fur and lets the air through.

We love the attention to detail with the design of this coat. The neck part is longer that you can use to pull over the ears and use it as a hood if they need extra protection in the wind. If your dog doesn’t like wearing it that high, it is still helpful to protect the dog from a heavy rain pouring under the coat through a low neck-opening. To make this part a custom fit, you can adjust the neck part with velcro under the neck.

The neck part has an opening for the collar attachment, and all their coats can be customized with a harness-opening as well.

The outer material is water-resistant, which makes the raindrops bead up on the coat.

The raincoat is held in place by two velcro straps under the belly, one on each side of the coat. These are elegant, thin straps with strong velcro on both sides that hold the jacket in place well.

Voyagers K9 Apparel Rain Coat Review

We have to mention the color of this coat because we are truly in love with it and get a lot of compliments from others. The raincoat comes in eight beautiful colors today, so you can surely find one that you will like ;)

This coat is lightweight and thin, but it feels durable and well-made. It is perfect for the spring or fall days, which are not too cold, but cold enough that you don’t want your dog to get soaked. If your dog gets cold quickly, you can put another layer under it and just put the coat over to protect it from rain and wind. One thing to mention is that the chest part is open; there isn’t coverage going back on the chest between the legs, so if you put a fleece under it, the chest and belly parts might get wet during the walk.

While we like this coat very much, we run into two issues worth mentioning.

The first is that strong wind can flip over the back of the coat since it doesn’t have anything going around the back legs to keep it down. We live in a very windy city, so this might be a more significant issue for us than others, but it’s a pain to keep adjusting the back of the coat in a massive storm.

Our other problem was with the DWR layer on the outer material. While the water was perfectly beading up on the coat over the first few weeks, after two months, most of the water-resistance was gone from the top layer. We haven’t washed the jacket yet and used only on rainy days - so that’s around ten walks probably. The coat is still not soaking through, the unique material of the jacket doesn’t let the water penetrating, but the coating itself absorbs some water and takes longer to dry after walks.

We contacted Voyagers K9 regarding this, and they stated that this is not how the coat typically behaves after this little use, so we are still investigating what the reason could be. The good news is that you can restore the waterproofness by applying a DWR treatment that you would use for human raincoats or camping gear. And again, this still doesn’t mean that the water is going through the coat, it still keeps Mia dry even though the top layer gets wet.

The coat is machine washable on a gentle cycle, and with lukewarm water, it can be even tumble dry on low. You have to keep in mind though that it’s normal for the waterproof layer to degrade over time and washing it frequently can speed up this process.

The coat is very comfortable for Mia, she can run around in it freely, it doesn’t restrict her movement, and it stays in place well even when she is off-leash. The coat has reflective piping around all edges, which makes it very visible in the dark.

Review Summary

We like that this is a lightweight coat that you can easily fold and store without taking up much room in a backpack. The colors and the design is beautiful and thought-through, while the material is also durable. Mia did run through bushes with it on, and the coat isn’t torn at all. There isn’t even a scratch on it so far.

Where to buy

You can find this raincoat among their other coats on their website . All of their products are stitched in the USA!

Mia’s measurements

Many of you asked Mia’s measurements to better understand the different products’ fit. Your best chance of finding a good fitting gear is always to measure (and remeasure) your dog. Even we grab the measuring tape before getting a new product - even though we tested a lot of them, and have a good feeling of her size by now.

I share her measurements below, but don’t go ahead and order the same size just because your dog is similar to Mia ;)

Shoulder height: 19.5 inches (50 cm)

Weight: 37-44 pounds (17-20 kg)

Widest chest circumference (where the most harness would have the chest strap): 25-26 inches (63-65 cm)

Neck circumference for collars: 15-16 inches (38-40 cm)

Back lengths: 22 inches (56 cm)

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills: Green Lungs, place to relax and meet

k9 voyager apparel ridgeback hundemantel

Gorky Park and Sparrow Hills

The history of the gorky.

The park was built in Soviet times between the two world wars and named after the author Maxim Gorky at the time. Up until the turn of the century, the area not far from the center was only a residential area with huge estates and then, in the turmoil of the civil war and shortly afterwards, served as an illegal landfill where citizens and entrepreneurs disposed of their garbage. After intensive cleaning in the early communist years, the site was first used as an agricultural exhibition in the mid-1920s until the Moscow City Council decided to set up a park here that was accessible to all citizens of Moscow. After all, this was supposed to take a full ten years of construction. Throughout the entire Soviet period, the park was incredibly popular and familiar to every Soviet citizen, whether from Moscow or not.

Rebirth after basic renovation

However, after the end of the Soviet Union, the area fell into disrepair – cheap hustle and bustle like shooting booths and slowly rusting rides shaped the sad picture. Only outsiders got lost in the park, which lived more from its reputation than from the sad reality. Only with the fundamental and just as expensive renovation in 2011 did the Gorky become the park it was once loved by the locals. Especially the promenade along the river with its large sunbathing areas in summer and the numerous ice rinks for ice skating in winter now attract thousands of locals to Gorky every day. Countless food and café stands scattered across the site provide visitors with everything imaginable – from Georgian delicacies, a decent café to traditional Russian kvass, or ice cream and smoothies in summer.

Concerts, art and privacy place

Even bigger crowd pullers are just the concerts in the park and these have a long tradition here. In 2018 alone, David Guetta, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Killers and Lana del Rey performed numerous international music greats Open Air. But even outside the big events there is always something to see in the Gorky. The modern art center “Garage” (website https://garagemca.org/en ) in the park holds regular art and design exhibitions. In addition, the art center gave the park the largest children’s playground in all of Russia for its 90th birthday in 2018. Numerous play equipment, including 29 different swings alone, are the perfect place to spend a few hours with the youngsters. Pedal boats can also be rented at several locations in the park, for example at the Andreevsky ponds, which is also suitable for children. Sports courses for adults are held regularly in the park. From jogging to yoga or Pilates there are organized courses – beach volleyball fields, soccer fields and an open air fitness studio offer further opportunities to do sports. Afterwards, beer gardens invite you to linger – all of this happens primarily in the central part of Gorky Park, known as the Neskuchny Garden. Would you like to experience Gorky Park and the magic of Moscow by yourself? Then you need a visa first – you can find out how to get it here !

k9 voyager apparel ridgeback hundemantel

Away from the central part: Muzeon and Sparrow Hills

In the section called Muzeon north of the Crimean Bridge there are over 1000 statues, Soviet monuments and modern art facilities. This open-air museum-like section of the Gorky invites you to take a walk that takes you past oversized and pompous Soviet busts as well as avant-garde art objects of the 21st century. Surrounded by statues of Lenin, this section looks partly surreal. The Stalin statue in particular, which had its nose removed, magically attracts visitors. For photographers, the sometimes slightly rusty busts and remains from the Soviet era offer great motifs. If you’d like to improve yourself as a promising photographer, you can even take a photography course in the park at Photoplay ( https://photoplay.ru/courses/workshop/photoplayatgorky.html ) At 2900 rubles, i.e. just under $ 41, this is significantly more affordable than comparable products in Asia or Australia. No wonder this section is considered an Instagram paradise for Moscow’s exploding hipster scene. Events are also held time and again in the Muzeon – for example, the warm months over and over here are held cinema screenings outdoors. Russian classics such as international cinema are shown. You have absolute peace in the Sparrow Hills, which also belong to the park but are spatially separated from the other part. About four kilometers further along the Moskva River out of town is this section of the Gorky Park, which is largely natural. There, just opposite the large Luzhniki Stadium on the other side of the Moskva River, where the Olympics and the World Cup finals have already taken place, there is another privacy place in the middle of Moscow. At the highest point of the Sparrow Hills, to which a cable car leads, you have a fantastic view of Moscow.

HIGH QUALITY AND WELL DESIGNED

I tried several other raincoats before ordering this one and I can emphatically say this one is by far the best. It has been thoughtfully designed so it doesn't impede movement and stays on without any issues. It keeps my Great Dane dry and he is very comfortable wearing it. The coat is well constructed and durable. I would highly recommend this rain coat to anyone considering it. - Shelley

GREAT RAINJACKETS THAT LAST

We've tried SO many rainjackets and this one is the most waterproof (and keeps staying waterproof). We've used ours for years and recommend them to everyone. They are well worth the money and fit really well, covering more areas that other jackets. - Adele

BEST RAINCOAT

We live in Seattle so we know rain. And even though it rains here a lot, our English Bulldog hates it. She wouldn't go out in the rain without a struggle. We tried several other raincoats but none of them fit her right or kept her dry. Not only does it keep her dry, but it fits. The customer service is out of this world. I recommend this coat and this company to anyone looking for the highest quality, best customer service, and best coats for your dog. - Leslie

SUPERIOR PROTECTION

Taslan Nylon wisks away rain and resists wind

Not only do water droplets bead up and roll off, but the waterproof fabric also dampens the  drip drip  sound that annoys so many dogs. You'll absolutely love how dry and comfortable your dog feels.

COMPLETE COMFORT

Breathable mesh provides comfort against your dog's sensitive fur

Mesh inner lining of breathable fabric feels good next to dog's fur. A microporous film blocks wind and water for a drier, more comfortable dog. The integrated hood is fully adjustable, extending up and over dog's neck and ears for extra protection from the wind and rain.

DESIGNED FOR YOUR DOG

Breed-specific design offers greater coverage & comfort

Our signature counterbalance straps prevent our rain jacket from shifting on your dog. For safety's sake, we've added reflective piping along the raincoat's lower edge to draw attention to your dog in dark or dreary conditions. If you get caught in a cloudburst, simply pull the rain jacket hood up and over your dog's ears.
