Essential to protect your head and face during the trek. It helps protect your skin from direct sunlight, preventing painful sunburns. You can also use a muffler or bandana for added protection.

Hydrate regularly to maintain oxygen levels, especially when you sweat a lot while hiking. Even if you don’t realize it, hiking causes significant water loss.

24. Sunscreen

Protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which can be especially intense at high altitudes. Apply sunscreen before going out.

25. Lip Balm

Prevent chapped and cracked lips by carrying lip balm to keep your lips soft and healthy while hiking.

Uttarakhand is the home to a 1200-year-old beautiful place of worship, the Kedarnath Temple. The sanctity and the overwhelming sense of peace that this site offers has made it one of the most sought after places in the state. The place has always attracted people looking for peace and a spiritual experience. The feeling of trekking to the highest-placed jyotirlinga just adds enough drama to the place to allure people looking for some thrill.

Deity of Kedarnath temple

The temple is famous for the Sadashiva form of Lord Shiva, manifested as the hump of the Nandi Avatar of the Hindu God. One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kedarnath is also one of the four significant sites that have always been pulling pilgrims towards them – Gangotri, Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Chota Char Dham. The temple also worships idols of Parvati, Nandi, the Pandavas, Draupadi, and Veerabhrada.

Where is Kedarnath temple located?

Resting in the heart of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath Temple is located near the Mandakini river, on the Himalayan range called Rudraprayag, Garhwal.

History of Kedarnath temple

The origin of the Kedarnath Temple can be traced back to the second century. There are claims that Bhoj of Malwa was the one who first started the construction of the temple. Others believe that it was built by the Pandavas after the Mahabharatha when they were in the Himalayas looking for forgiveness from Lord Shiva for all the war sins that were committed during the Mahabharatha.

Lord Shiva couldn’t forgive the sins of the war and was trying to avoid meeting the Pandavas. He then took sanctuary in the same spot as the Kedarnath Temple. When the Pandavas found him, Lord Shiva was in his Nandi avatar (the bull) and dove into the ground leaving only his hump behind. The hump is now worshipped in the Sadashiva form. While the origin information about temple might be debatable, its significance in the rich history of the country is not.

Sunday, november 28, 2021, top 8 things to carry for kedarnath trekking | winter trek.

Planning a trek to Kedarnath temple in winter? You may run through the internet to know what things to pack, how much to pack, and how to carry? Don’t worry; here we are taking you through all your doubts. Kedarnath trekking is one of those treks that lie in the range of Himalayan Mountain. The trek nonetheless than any heaven, many tourists flocks here between May to November month. It is the place of Lord Mahadev . Being situated at the altitude of 11700 feet the temperature here falls to minus with snowfall and rain. It is necessary to know the right things to pack for Kedarnath trekking. When I had planned my trek to Kedarnath, I had researched a lot to know what to pack for Himalayan trekking and after that, it became a successful trek to Kedarnath. This article will help you to plan your trek to the Kedarnath temple. Kedarnath temple is situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state, India. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India.

It takes a minimum of 4 to 6 days if you are planning for Kedarnath from any state of India. There are many things that you need to pack if you are planning a winter trek to Kedarnath temple . It is important to know the right things to pack for your short winter trek. Kedarnath trek is the 18 km long ascending trek that starts from Gaurikund village.

Top 8 and Most Important Things to Carry for Kedarnath Trekking

-Upper Clothing

If you are planning your trek to somewhere where the temperature ranges from 5 degrees to – 5 then the first thing you have to do is say goodbye to fashion clothes, sounds bad right? Yes, you have to avoid packing fashionable clothing for the winter trek. The best way to prepare for the Himalayan trek is warm clothing . Kedarnath is one of those places where the temperature falls to zero degrees even if it is summer season. You need to at least cover your body with four layers of clothing.

A Four-layer of clothing includes thermal as the first and base layer that helps you to keep your body covered. After that second layer is the woolen sweater that helps you prevent cold. The third layer is when your fleece t-shirt or jacket comes into work to keep you warm as the temperature falls in the evening. The last layer or fourth layer should be the lightweight windproof or waterproof jacket to prevent you from cold air and rain. You need to follow this sequence because in day time you can only wear thermal as it will start sweating due to trekking. As you start feeling slightly colder you can add the next layer without disturbing your base layer and likewise keep adding the other two as the temperature falls in the night. Carry a minimum of two thermals as a backup. If one gets wet due to sweat you can at least have another to keep you warm. Thermal weight is very minimal so one can pack that as extra.

-Lower Clothing

One should carry at least one bottom thermal pants to keep your lower body warm at night. There is no need to wear bottom thermal while trekking, you can wear light trekking pants. Carry at least two trekking pants that can give you good comfort while trekking. One while trekking and one as a backup if in case needed.  No need to carry jeans or trousers, it will unnecessarily make your bag heavy.

Other Accessories

-Warm Socks

Your feet are the only part of your body that takes the body's complete weight right? So how can you forget your feet? One should carry a minimum of three pairs of socks for five days of the short trek. Socks inside fleece are not needed while trekking because if it gets wet then it can cause you trouble at night. Carry one pair of fleece socks and two pairs of woolen socks to keep your feet warm at night. The daytime can be managed with one sock as you will be wearing shoes on it so you won’t feel that cold. The socks length should be till calf or knee to get a more comfortable sleep at night. This is experienced by me if you won’t wear two-layer of socks in the night then you will be in trouble.

Wearing good pair of gloves blocks your skin from cold air. This will reduce the dissipation of heat through your skin. One should have one pair of good woolen/insulated gloves to keep your hands warm in minus temperature. The weight of these hand gloves is equal to no weight. If it’s raining or snowing then you should have waterproof gloves on top of insulated gloves. You might feel to become a kid for one moment and feel like playing with snow then the waterproof gloves are the ones that will give you that comfort.

-About your Head & Neck

While talking about another part of the body how can we forget the Head and Neck especially when there is minus temperature, isn’t it? A wide summer cap to protect you from the sun while trekking in the daytime and a balaclava to keep you cozy in a wind-chill climate. You either keep one balaclava or woolen cap and neck scarf or muffler. Covering your complete body with warm layers is what works in the Himalayan Mountain. This is something you just added to your backpack.

When we are talking about trekking then shoes are the one that plays the important role, you agree right? Always in all circumstances, wear comfortable shoes. Good quality shoes are one of the important assets for your winter trek. Shoes with crampons are what you need in Chadar frozen river trek , and the Kedarkantha trek , because here you will be walking on the hard ice. A crampon gives a good grip on your shoes. One should never compromise on the quality of shoes, you will be trekking for almost 10 to 12 hrs a day so you must have a good quality of shoes. Some of my favorite brands are wildcraft and Quechua because shoes are long-lasting and it is reasonable too. You can keep lightweight floaters in your bag.

Trekking Pole

Some of you might get a question that what is the use of a trekking pole while trekking to a mountain? Let me tell you all, trekking pole is very important when it comes to trek. They act as your third leg while walking, keeping your balance in tough terrains while trekking. This pole also reduces some amount of pressure on your knee. You may find numbers of wooden poles selling in just 30 INR at Kedarnath base point but, I would suggest you carry your own trekking pole which is adjustable too and can also use in all treks.

Personal Utilities

You don’t need to pack your bag with unnecessary utilities but yes, you can carry some of the basic things that require once you are exposed to minus temperature and hard sun rays. It may contain Lip balm, cold cream, sunscreen lotion to prevent your skin. People from Maharashtra are not fond of cold temperatures throughout the years, so it is necessary to carry this skin prevented stuff. UV-protected sunglasses is one of that utility that needs to carry. Do carry power bank as you may suffer a lot if your phone gets off and you can not even take photos.

Some of you might be having high altitude sickness so it is better to carry basic medicines in your bag. Some of the basic medicines are,

Diamox- to prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness)

Crocin or Dolo 650- Fever, High fever

Zantac/Omex- Acidity

Cetirizine- Allergic sneezing, cold

Strepsil- Sore throat

Electoral or Energy Drink

Carry the above-mentioned medicine while traveling to Kedarnath or any North trek.

Insulator Water Bottle

Hidden but amongst the important thing to carry for winter hiking is an Insulator bottle . When you travel in the minus temperature you need to keep your body hydrated throughout the trek. You may not feel thirsty but still, you need to have a sip of water while ascending. There is no room temperature water in the Himalayas unless you carry some hot water from the hotel but, you need to have an Insulated bottle to store in hot water for up to 18 to 24 hrs. Yes, this hot water can save you from sore throat and cold. It is advisable rather than carrying a normal water bottle to keep an Insulated water bottle in the backpack.

Food/Snacks

You need to load your bag with some snacks which are high in protein. At Kedarnath, you will only get Maggy, Parathas, and Dal rice to eat. There are some snacks available at some of the selected counters that are too costly than what you get in the local market. I would advise you to carry dry fruits, Chocolates, Energy bars, or glucose biscuits along with you. This acts as an instant energy source whenever you are running through hunger. You can also keep some apples in your bag to start your day if you are having acidity problems.

Packing for the trip is exciting but unpacking is always depressing. You can always divide your bag pack as per your day's planning. When you trek to Kedarnath for close to 6 days you at least require a minimum 60 to 70 litter bag pack . Once you get to know what things to carry for Kedarnath, it would be easy for you to decide on the bag pack. You should never compromise on a bag pack and shoes. A bag pack is the one that takes the load of your entire heavy luggage. Just make sure your bag pack has good hip support, shoulder support, and a quick access pocket. All your things will get into this bag pack. An apart from it also carry a small bag pack of 10 to 20 litters to keep the regular things that you need most often. A small bag will help you to easily access the required things.

Tips to Remember for Kedarnath Trekking

  • Start your trek early in the morning to reach the summit early
  • Always carry ID card copy on phone and also one hard copy, you will never know if it requires at the check post.
  • Keep some amount of extra cash as you will be running a shortage of the network at some point.

It is believed in the Hindu faith that going on a pilgrimage of any of the Chota Char Dharm sites is the ultimate test of one’s devotion, and the darshan of any one of the four holy abodes (dhams) or ideally all of the four dhams grant one the divine blessings of the Almighty.

Badrinath is home to the sacred and enthralling Temple of Lord Vishnu, also popularly known as the temple of Shri Badrinath. According to the ancient texts and scriptures of Hinduism, the holy temple of Shri Badrinath is considered as the most paradisiacal spot in all of heaven and earth. On the other hand, Kedarnath is revered by the Hindu devotees and pilgrims as the holiest of the Char Dham, as it is believed to be the home of Lord Shiva, and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (lingas/shrines of Lord Shiva). It also boasts the largest Lord Shiva temple situated in the Himalayas.

The Do Dham Yatra (pilgrimage of two dhams) of Kedarnath and Badrinath pose the toughest challenges owing to their extremely high Himalayan altitudes and difficult terrains. Therefore, in order to make this strenuous journey a little simpler for you, we bring you this detailed blog in which we share the 10 best travel tips that you must keep in mind before visiting Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Learn about the Best Time to Visit

Situated at high altitudes in the Himalayas, the holy destinations of Kedarnath and Badrinath receive cold weather throughout the year. While the winters are extremely cold and harsh, and are characterized by sub-zero temperatures, the monsoon months, from July to August, see heavy downpours that make the roads highly prone to roadblocks. The opening timings of both the Badrinath and Kedarnath Temples are usually the same, that is, in the first week of May. However, their closing timings are different.

While the Badrinath Temple usually closes 10 days after Dussehra, the temple of Shri Kedarnath closes the day after Diwali each year.

With the temperature hovering around 17°C, the summer season (May-June) is the ideal time to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath as this time coincides with the opening of the temples (in May). However, one can also undertake the pilgrimage of Kedarnath and Badrinath in the months of September and October, just before the onset of winter.

Familiarize Yourself with the Best Routes and Modes of Traveling

While the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun and Haridwar railway station is the nearest airport and railway station respectively to both Kedarnath and Badrinath, the road routes leading to these places are quite different.

Situated in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand, Badrinath enjoys good road connectivity with the major destinations of Uttarakhand like Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Pauri and Rudraprayag, among others. Kedarnath, on the other hand, enjoys limited connectivity with the major roadway networks of Uttarakhand due to its difficult and inhospitable terrain.

The route to Kedarnath begins at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as the road towards Badrinath till it branches away at Rudraprayag. From there, it continues until Gaurikund (235 kms away from Rishikesh), which is the last motorable road point before Kedarnath. Frequent buses and jeeps are available from Rishikesh to take you to Gaurikund. It takes around 12 hours to complete this journey. After reaching Gaurikund, you’ll have to undertake a 14 km trek through meadows and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes to reach Kedarnath, the holiest and most sacred site of Hindus.

You are always advised to take the help of local guides when in doubt, as this will help them to avoid dangerous short-cuts and stray on treacherous paths leading to dead-ends.

Avail the Services of Helicopter rides/Mules/Palanquins for a Comfortable Journey

The most comfortable way to reach Kedarnath is by Helicopter. One can easily book and avail the services of Helicopter rides from the numerous helipads situated at Guptkashi, Sirsi and Phata. You can easily book Helicopter rides online through the websites of different aviation companies like Aryan, Pawan Hans and Arrow AirCraft.

One can also hire mules and palkis (palanquins) from Gaurikund, which is the last motorable road point before Kedarnath, to reach Kedarnath.

Enlist the Help of a Tour Operator/Travel Agency

The pilgrimage of Kedarnath and Badrinath is adorned with narrow and dangerous Himalayan roads, inhospitable environment, rough geography and unpredictable weather and therefore, the best way to ensure that your Darshan of Shri Kedarnath and Shri Badrinath remains safe, hassle-free and spiritually enlightening is by planning your trip through a reputed and trustworthy Tour Operator or a Travel Agency. From scheduling your trip and planning a holistic travel itinerary to booking comfortable accommodation places, the tour operator will manage all the nitty-gritty details of the trip leaving you with an undisturbed and enriching spiritual experience.

Carry Adequate Number of Woolen Clothes

Kedarnath and Badrinath experience cold and chilly climate throughout the year. Therefore, you should carry an adequate number of warm woolen clothes with them, including sweaters, jackets, thermals, windcheaters, winter caps, proper winter footwear and gloves.

Hypothermia is a real possibility in such harsh winter conditions, and therefore, it is advisable for all pilgrims traveling to Kedarnath and Badrinath to dress themselves in warm layers and in appropriate winter clothes in order to protect themselves from the biting cold. You are also advised to carry blankets, umbrellas, raincoats and torches with them, as the weather is quite unpredictable in these high Himalayan mountains.

Equip Yourselves with Necessary Drugs and Medications

On your journey to Kedarnath, situated at 3,584 meters, and Badrinath, situated at 3,133 meters, you will be gaining altitude rapidly as you move towards the higher ranges of the Himalayas. You will also be traveling on narrow and zig-zag mountainous roads that can make you feel dizzy and light-headed. In such high altitudes, the probability of getting affected with AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) also increases manifold. The most common symptoms of AMS are headache, dizziness, stomach cramps, shortness of breath and weakness. Therefore, you should carry proper and adequate medicines of AMS and other health conditions (as hospitals and medical facilities are very few and far in between) with them at all times. Your medical kit should also include painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges, antiseptic creams and gels, Iodine and medicines for cold and fever. It is recommended to keep their medicines along with a first-aid kit within their reach at all times.

Carry Packaged Drinking Water and Dry Foods

The journey to Kedarnath and Badrinath is long and physically exhausting. It is advisable to never skip any meals or stay hungry for a long period of time, as this may aggravate the symptoms of AMS and cause you to feel unwell. One can always buy food from the numerous food stalls and eateries dotted over the route leading to the pilgrimage sites. It is always good to carry small packets of dry foods, peanuts, dates, chocolates and energy bars. Ready to make packets of noodles and rice are also useful commodities which you can carry with yourselves on such long journeys.

You are also advised to bring their own bottles of drinking water with them, as you may experience difficulties in procuring the same in these remote Himalayan highlands. You must keep in mind that all the Himalayan Char Dham destinations are holy sites and so, alcohol is strictly prohibited in these places. The Uttarakhand Police imposes heavy fines and penalties on persons found to be carrying alcohol to these sacred places.

Carry Power Banks, Dairies and Extra Batteries for Cameras

It can be difficult to get proper mobile phone network at all times during your Yatra of Kedarnath and Badrinath, owing to the dearth of mobile sim towers in such difficult topography. You may also experience frequent power cuts or long durations without electricity. Therefore, they are advised to carry power banks as well as extra batteries.

You can also carry a personal diary or a logbook in which you can note down the contact numbers of your tour guide, nearest police station, friends and family and medical facilities to be used in case of emergencies.

Prepare Yourself Physically and Mentally before Embarking on the Pilgrimage

The journey to Kedarnath and Badrinath is both physically and mentally challenging one. It is recommended that devotees start preparing at least one month before the journey. Light Jogging, brisk walking and breathing exercises should be done by everybody. You are also advised to do Yoga and meditation, as these will calm their minds as well as improve their concentration power.

You are also required to present a medical fitness certificate while going on the Kedarnath pilgrimage. It can be obtained from Gupkashi or Sonprayag.

Always Carry Enough Cash

Most of the hotels, restaurants, cafes and eateries falling on the roads to Kedarnath and Badrinath don’t accept cards, money transfers through e-mobile wallets or any other form of digital transaction. Therefore, you must always carry enough cash with you during this journey.

Kedarnath – How to plan a trip [Complete Travel Guide]

Shefali Joshi

Kedarnath is a divine Hindu settlement situated in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. It is one of the Char Dhams located in the Himalayas, and is situated at an astounding height of 3584 meters above sea level near the head of Mandakini River.

The Kedarnath temple lies amidst the majestic snow-capped Garhwal Himalayan ranges and is thronged by thousands of tourists and pilgrims each year. Also, the Kedarnath trek is stunningly beautiful and quite eclectic, even in the trekking circuit.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Famous for the ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva, it offers a calm atmosphere with a beautifully painted backdrop thanks to the rhododendron woods, snow-covered mountains, and splendid sights of nature. An amalgamation of devoutness and adventure is what makes it incomparable. A MUST VISIT for one and all.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Kedarnath

Kedarnath literally means the Lord of the field, and it is so called because the “crop of liberation” grows here. While it is not certain who constructed the temple or when! One of the earliest references of Kedarnath is in the 7th or 8th century. It is also believed that Adi Shankara died near the sanctuary.

History & Mythology

It is believed that post the battle of Kurukshetra, Pandavas went on a journey to Banaras in order to repent killing their own and seek blessings from the Lord. But, Shivji wanted to avoid meeting with the brothers, and thus, took solace in Guptakashi.

However, Pandavas were relinquishing in their search for the Lord and when they found him, Shivji decided to take the form of buffalo so that they couldn’t recognize him. Now, when Shivji saw the Pandavas approaching closer, he wanted to hide even further.

Thus, He took the decision to also become invisible by way of going underground. However, brother Bhīma tried hard to stop him from leaving by holding on to the legs and tail of the bull. Unfortunately, the Lord dived and evaporated at that place leaving behind his hump which is now worshipped at Kedarnath Temple.

It is however believed that through cosmic energy, the Pandavas were exempted from their sins and Shivji informed that from then onwards He would be present in Jyotirlinga form at Kedarnath.

Located in the Rudraprayag district, Kedarnath is the most remote of all Chota Char Dham sites. Situated near the Chorabari Glacier – the source of the Mandakini river, Kedarnath is flanked by snow-capped peaks – most prominently the Kedarnath mountain (6,940 mts) and the Kedar Dome (6,831 mts). Located at a distance of 223 KM from Rishikesh, the town is built on a barren stretch of land on the shored of the river.

The town unfortunately suffered extensive destruction during 2013 due to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand. The temple magnificently survived the harsh calamities!

In line with the Himalayan weather, Kedarnath experiences cool summers while the winters are extremely difficult and harsh. Summer is ideal for all sight-seeing, temple visits and experiencing nearby attractions as well. The average temperature is around 17 degrees in the summer.

Monsoon months are difficult and the area has suffered extreme rainfall many times, particularly in 2013. Monsoon weather is around 12 degrees. Winters are cold, complex and inhabitable. The palki of Lord Kedarnath is transferred to its winter abode near Guptakashi – Ukhimath from November to April. Weather in this season is always in the negative!

Helicopter Options

You may even get a helicopter ride if you’re not into trekking (although I strongly recommend the trek!). The services are available from different helipads such as Guptkashi, Sersi, Phata etc.

What to do in Kedarnath

Given that Kedarnath is a religious destination, clearly the centermost attraction are places with mythological connotations.

Kedarnath Temple

Enveloped in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas, the Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Kedarnath Temple is among the 275 temples of Paadal Petra Sthalams (the most powerful Shiva temples in the world) and is also the most important among the Panch Kedars.

With fresh air synonymous with the hills and stunning views that you have to earn – you will lose all sense of time here! For thousands of year, this place has been worshipped and the energy of the region is that of positivity, hope and beliefs for the future.

Inside the temple, you’ll be greeted with a small hall with images of Parvati as well as the Pandavas. The hall is decorated with statues of Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, Virbhadra and many other deities! There is a conical rock inside the temple which is worshipped as the Sadashiva (forever Shiv).

Made from grey stones which are interlocked with the use of iron clamps – the temple is truly striking in the backdrop of Himalayas.

Gandhi Sarovar

Gandhi Sarovar is a small crystal clear lake, also known as Chorabari Tal. This is so because it is situated on the mouth of Chorabari Bamak glacier. Gandhi Sarovar lies on the foot of Kedarnath and Kirthi Stambh peak at an astounding altitude of 3,900mts above sea level. The lake comes after completed further 4 KMs trek from Kedarnath Temple.

Kalimath is a religious place located on the banks of Saraswati river. Located at a height of 1800 mts, Kalimath is one of the 108 Shakti Peeths in India. Kalimath lies on lap of nature offering salubrious and divine environment. Goddess Kali Temple is located in Kalimath. Legends believe that after killing Raktbeej, Kali Goddess went underneath the ground at this place!

Bhairav Temple

Bhairavnath Temple or Bhairon Baba Mandir is situated south of the Kedarnath temple on the eastern hill of the lofty Himalayas of Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Bhairav – the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with destruction and devastation. The temple offers some stunning views of the Himalayas and it is a beautiful portion of your journey to Kedarnath!

Gaurikund temple is a temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. According to myths and legends, this is the place where Goddess Parvati did penance involving ascetic and yoga practices to win over Shiva’s heart. It is believed that Lord Shiva admitted his love for the Goddess here and they then married at Triyuginarayan temple.

Shankaracharya Samadhi

Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher, credited with unifying and establishing the main thoughts in Hinduism. At the age 32, he decided to attain moksha at Kedarnath and merged under with the land near the Kedarnath Temple. The samadhi is situated right behind the temple.

What to do around Kedarnath

There is so much to explore around the Kedarnath Temple. So, remember to keep some time at hand to truly immerse yourself into the experience!

Vasuki Tal Lake

Vasuki Tal is a high glacial lake situated at an impressive altitude of 14,200 feet above sea level near Kedarnath Dham. One can spot Brahma Kamal and other Himalayan flowers blooming around the placid lake, making for some spectacular views.

Ideally, I would suggest you complete the route in the day time itself, and spend the night at Kedarnath! The trek distance from Kedarnath temple is 8 KMs, initial 3-4 KMs is easy before the ascend begins. The icy Vasuki Tal is just 900 meters downhill from Vasuki top.

Guptkashi is situated 47kms before the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, Kedarnath. It is located on the route to Kedarnath on a ridge on the west side of the Mandakini river valley at an elevation of 1,319mts above sea level.

Guptkashi is a religiously important town of Uttarakhand as it houses ancient temples like Vishwanath temple and Ardhnareshwar temple. A highly revered attraction, Manikarnika Kund is where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet.

Kedarnatha Trek

Kedarnatha trek is in one of the most significantly religious areas, especially in the Hindu Mythology. The Temple of Lord Kedarnatha (Shivji), which sits at the base of the summit, has stood the test of time and is revered amongst spiritual believers.

Millions of pilgrims move mountains to offer their prayers and seek blessings of the Hindu Deity each year. The temple itself lies at the base of the Kedarnath Peak, facing the Kedar Parvat. A beginner level trek, Kedarnath is especially beautiful in the winter months.

One of the most remarkable crests in the Himalayan region, both nature lovers and ardent trekkers tend to enjoy the experience.

Char Dham Yatra

The Chota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand is the four abodes of holy shrines – Badrinath , Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri . All four of these temples are situated within the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. The prominence of the Charm Dham Yatra is immense amongst Hindus.

Moreover, it is believed that every Hindu should do Char Dham Yatra at least once in their lifetime. The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century.

Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year. Thus, it is very common to complete the circuit in one religious pilgrimage!

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Best places to stay near Kedarnath

There is a huge government-run tented colony along with cottages as well as rooms run by GMVN. These are sufficient to home more than a thousand pilgrims and visitors. Also, there are hotels, guest houses, and Dharamshala as well.

A lot of folks have started taking the journey via helicopters and thus stay locations can be Phata, Rampur, Gaurikund, Sitapur etc.

Best places to eat

Unfortunately, the only option for decent food here is the food stalls and roadside dhabas. Food available is mostly north Indian cuisine. Of course, given the highly revered place in Hinduism that Kedarnath holds, it should come as no surprise that alcohol and non-vegetarian food is not served/ is prohibited.

When we go on a trip, most of us, especially for the first time, only pack clothes and a few more things we like. Even I have done the same but with time I learnt that it is not the number of things that you carry. But there is a checklist that you need to follow as much as possible.

Let’s talk about the list of things to carry while travelling to Kedarnath with respect to the mode of transportation

The above-mentioned list is a very generic list of things to pack for Kedarnath. Now let us talk about what would we specifically need in some conditions. As I already mentioned earlier there are 4 ways to reach the temple. There are a few things you must carry along if you are planning to trek to the temple. If you are not sure from which point you will start trekking and from where to take the helicopters to Kedarnath. Do check this Kedarnath trip cost and guide .

  • Keep knee wraps or knee caps. These are great for hiking and I am telling you from my personal experience.
  • Carry extra water bottles

  • Sleeping Bag : It is the best accessory for camping and you don’t need to carry blankets or anything else.
  • Torch : Although you might want to rely on your phone flashlight I would recommend you carry a torch too. Mobiles are only capable of producing light at some distance but there you need more than that and hence a good torch will be necessary.
  • Neck pillow : If you are planning to sleep anywhere outside your home then neck pillows are the best option to go with.
  • Carry some paper cups to have some tea coffee or even hot water.

If you are going to hire a Mule(Khachhar):

  • Keep padded shorts : These are great for preventing rashes in your inner thighs and bums while riding the Mule. Most of us ride it for the first time so it becomes more necessary.

Thank you for this fantastic post. We are planning to visit Kedarnath in October 1st week of 2023. We as in me and my wife. Just wanted to ask you… What are the room rates like the one where you stayed so near to the mandir. How did you book? Also can you please guide me as to what are the things I must carry?

Since the tourist rush in October is comparatively low, hence the room rate also decreases. There are accommodations close to the temples which charge up to 5000/day in peak seasons and below 4000 in non peak seasons like October. To avoid any sudden price hike or cancellation you must book hotels via GMVN website. For the things you must carry for the Kedarnath trip, please go through the article. Here are the highlighted point for your reference.

In Bags One large backpack with a raincoat. One medium size carry bag. One waist bag or sling bag Shoes One pair of casual or sports shoes. 3 pairs of knee-length socks. Polyester Joggers/lowers: These are quick dry in nature and are good while travelling. You can use them in some situations and also they are very lightweight hence are easy to carry. Winter Jackets: Even if you are travelling in peak summer never forget to carry at least one winter jacket. Elderly people may need more clothing. What To Carry For A Trip To Kedarnath

  • August 1, 2023 in Adventure , Temples

kedarnath trip dress

Are you delighted to embark on a journey full of adventure in your mind and devotion to Lord Shiva in your heart? If yes, there is no better destination than Kedarnath to accomplish the same. Nestled in the arms of the majestic snow-layered Himalayas, where everything around seems mystical, stands the tall and firm Kedarnath Dham. Kedarnath, a town in Rudraprayag, popularly known for the Kedarnath Temple, is one of the Char Dham circuit’s religious spots and cradles one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva in India.

Due to dynamic climate conditions, you ought to be careful while planning or packing. In addition, book your accommodation with OYO family hotels in or around the place for a comfortable stay.

5 Must-Have Things In Your Travel Kit on a Trip To Kedarnath

If you are planning to go for top sightseeing in Kedarnath this season, consider carrying the following items with you to have a comfortable journey:

● Suitable and Appropriate Clothing

Kedarnath’s climatic conditions are unpredictable, so ensure that you carry suitable thermal clothing and monsoon wear during your trip to Kedarnath. Your thermal wear must include woollens, gloves and scarves to protect you from harsh cold weather. Your monsoon wear should include a pair of good raincoats and umbrellas that protect you against harsh rains, snowfall, and winds. Wear comfortable trekking shoes to avoid slips and ensure a safe journey to Kedarnath.

● Basic Medications and First-Aid Kit

Although medical centres are established every few kilometres for the convenience of the pilgrims and trekkers, ensure you carry some basic medications and a first aid kit to ensure good health throughout your trip. You can carry painkillers, anti-septic creams, band-aids, and other personal medications you may require as per your preference. Altitude sickness can be a problem, so it is better to consult your doctor before you pack your medications for the trip.

● Portable Water and Dry Snacks

Keep yourself hydrated throughout your journey, as high altitudes demand a lot of energy, and you may feel worn out if not hydrated properly. Thus, always carry enough packaged drinking water and ensure to refill your bottles only at the government-recognised designated points along the journey. Carry a box of dry snacks, including energy bars, dry fruits, or protein bars, to energise your body throughout the long journey.

● Personal Hygiene and Care Items

Considering your personal hygiene and personal care, carry products like sunscreen, lip balms, sanitisers, handwash and tissues on your trip to Kedarnath. These personal items will help you maintain your hygiene in irregular situations and protect your skin from harsh weather conditions. Also, always pack these items in your travel kit and arrange them to be easily accessible.

● Other Miscellaneous Items

In addition to the essential items mentioned above, carry other important miscellaneous items such as power banks, extra batteries, torchlights, headlamps, sunglasses, electronic device chargers, cameras, and a robust travel backpack with ample storage room. Ensure to carry items only of essential importance, travel lightweight and keep the luggage to a minimum to enjoy the thrill of visiting Kedarnath.

Why Choose OYO Accommodations in Kedarnath?

Considering the sky-rocketed demand for family hotels in Kedarnath , OYO accommodations and hotels offer a wide range of benefits, making it an ideal choice for your stay on a trip to this place. OYO stays are strategically located so that you have easy access to the temple and nearby tourist attractions. Strict hygiene protocols are always followed at the OYO properties, and all the rooms are equipped with all the necessary amenities to refresh you.

Remember to carry the above-mentioned things in your travel kit for a comfortable journey. It will protect you from unforeseen emergencies and unwelcome situations, making your trip memorable with many happy memories that will last a lifetime.

While you are still looking for family hotels in Kedarnath, consider OYO’s stay options and visit their official website now to grab exclusive deals and discounts.

Things To Carry for Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha Trek  is located in the Garhwal Himalayas. It’s the tallest hike in the Himalayas in Uttarakhand. In India, the most popular winter trip is the Kedar-Kantha walk. An incredible winter hike is the Kedarkantha trail. It is well-known for its beautiful scenery, wildlife, and vegetation. The phrases “Throat of Lord Shiva” (Kedar and Kantha) are the source of the trek’s name. The residents of the Sankri area think that while Lord Shiva was hiding here from the Pandavas during the time of Mahabharat, his focus was diverted by animal bells. Lord Shiva then proceeded in the direction of Kedarnath.  The Kedarkantha Trek covers a total of 20 kilometers in journey distance

Throughout the journey, the things you must carry become your constant companions, providing warmth, safety, and food. Every piece of equipment, from layered clothes for fluctuating temperatures to essentials like trekking poles, emergency supplies, and healthy food provisions, becomes a lifesaver when faced with shifting weather patterns and topography. A thorough evaluation of these necessities guarantees not only a prosperous hike but also a life-changing and remarkable experience amidst the breathtaking splendor of Kedarkantha.

A few tips for Kedarkantha Trek

  • Carry an umbrella and raincoat as per the weather
  • Carry water bottles
  • Keep your eyes on the trekking route
  • Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the harsh sunlight of noon

KEDARNATH Trip, how to Plan

Do and Don't for Kedarnath Visitors.:- I visited there twice, once in May 2017 and then again in Oct 2018. I did the trekking with my wife and the two kids aged 12 and 8 yrs in May 2017 and went again with my father who is 80 yrs old in Oct 18 using the helicopters. I will explain all the ways in detail. You can visit there from mid April till mid Nov as the temple remains closed before and after this time due to heavy snowfall. but the best time to visit there is October. it's important to know why do I say so. For trekking or using horse you will have to leave your vehicle at Sonprayag parking. You will have to walk some 1 km from Sonprayag and then will have to join the queue to get the special (GMVL) Jeep which will take you to the Gaurikund. it's around 2.5 to 3 km from Sonprayag to Gauri kund. From Gauri kund you can do trekking for 14 km to the temple, or can use a horse one-way @1800 or palki @5000. Option 1:- If you want to use horse do the prepaid booking from Gauri kund only as you will hardly get the horses afterwards or even if you get, they will charge you much higher. In summers you need to book the prepaid horse at Gauri kund before 3 AM as they are less in numbers than the visitor's. If you starts with horse at 4 AM you will reach there by 8 or 9 AM. Get in the queue for 3 to 4 hrs max and go inside the Garvgrih to do your darshan after that come back on the same day with an another prepaid horse, and do the night halt at Gaurikund. Accommodations are available at Gauri kund or at the Kedarnath. Only few are available mid way so don't take a risk. Option 2:- If you want to walk (trekking) from Gaurikund to the Kedarnath temple it's 14 Km, it takes some 8 or 9 hrs for a non habitual to walk that 14 KM. From Gauri kund to Bhimbali is 6 Km, this 6 KM is not that steep but next 8 Kms are really difficult because of the steepness and low oxygen in the atmosphere. This 8 KM will be like 16 KM or even tougher. So walk gently and don't rush as rushing will need more oxygen which is not there. Don't feel afraid as my son did it at the age of 8 and I did it at the age of 49 ( 75 Kg) so you can also do it. I saw some hundreds of old people there, but none of them felt the need of Oxygen cylinders so need not carry or afraid. However carry some camphor to ease your breathing if is needed to only 1 of a thousand visitors. If you walk all along and if you start at 5 AM then you will reach after 3 PM at the temple. The temple closes at 3 PM after that it opens again at 4 PM but at 4PM to 8 PM you are not allowed to visit inside the Garvgrih so you can't touch the lingam nor can you pour water (Jalavishek) so you will feel a half darshan only. So need to stay near the temple at Night, and always do prepaid booking for the night halt from the GMVN sites. In summer I saw many people willing to stay there at night but the accommodation was limited. I too had to manage a person's house at double the rates which is also very limited. The nights are really very chilled so never take a risk. May June & July is heavily rushed , it takes some 2 or 3 hrs or even more in the queue in summer but it took just 30 mnts in October. it's really risky to go there after June till mid Sept because of the heavy rain and landslides. So October is the best time to visit there. Always carry a good quality rain coat as it rains more often. Option 3:- If you want to go by Helicopter then there are some 6 aviation companies which are providing the helicopter services. Helicopter services do not operate from mid July to mid Sept due to heavy rain. Every company has his own helipad. It was Rs 6800 per person both ways upto 80 KG and beyond that @150 extra for every KG. Always take the tickets in advance as it's almost impossible to get the tickets on the spot. I used the Pawanhans helicopters in 2018 from Phata. Use the direct links to book the tickets. You can also use the direct number 9899400899 ,9873155666 for Pawanhans online booking sight. It takes just 8 mint's one way. Helicopter services are available "same day return" and "night halt" both the options. For same day they allow only 2 or 3 hrs time to do the darshan but dont panic. While returning back they work on the basis of first come first serve . But have enough clothing even when you are using helicopter as the return journey may get postponed for the next day if the flying condition is not good as it happens many times due to rain. Luggage's allowed is 5 KG only. Many hotels are available at phata helipad. There is no special dress code to go inside the Gurvgrih. I didn't opt for priority darshan in either of the trips as it's a big injustice to those who can't afford. Don't try to buy the God and his boon, better pray from your own home rather than doing this injustice to the real devotees. By Shiva's boon and his call, I have visited all the 12 Jyotirlings. So for any other information if you need , you can whatsapp me at 9990318745.I will be happy to help you

There is positive energy in that place. An excellent place to visit at least once in a lifetime. The nature there is so beautiful and we feel Lord Shiva is so close to us. After a tough travel from Gaurikund to Kedarnath we forget our pain and are one with God.

First half of trek was mostly problem free and and steady and achievable by the masses, however the second half after you cross the man made bridge became extremely strenuous , difficultly level increased drastically. most of the 11 friends/relatives got on horses because the steepness was just too demanding. I carried on to the top and eventually achieved the goal by foot, be warned weather can change very quickly, we had hailstorms rain and snow showers with squally winds inbetween. Ultimately it's worth it just to see the Jawdropping awe at the top. Tranquility and eye watering beauty awaits you .❤️

Dear Guest, Thank you for your generous words of praise! We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the visit to Kedarnath Mandir. Kēdārnāth Mandir (Kedarnath Temple) is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is on the Garhwal Himalayan range near the Mandakini river in Kedarnath, Uttarakhand in India. Due to extreme weather conditions, the temple is open only between the end of April (Akshaya Tritriya) to November (Kartik Purnima - the autumn full moon). During the winters, the vigrahas (deities) from Kedarnath temple are brought to Ukhimath and worshipped there for six months. Lord Shiva is worshipped as Kedarnath, the 'Lord of Kedar Khand', the historical name of the region. The temple is not directly accessible by road and has to be reached by a 18 kilometres (11 mi) uphill trek from Gaurikund. Pony and manchan service is available to reach the structure. According to Hindu legends, the temple was initially built by Pandavas, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest Hindu shrines of Shiva. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, expounded in Tevaram. Pandavas were supposed to have pleased Shiva by doing penance in Kedarnath. The temple is one of the four major sites in India's Chota Char Dham pilgrimage of Northern Himalayas. This temple is the highest among the 12 Jyotirlingas. It fills my heart with joy and words impeccable that we express our gratitude to guests such as you. This kind of motivating feedbacks makes us work even harder to ensure TOTAL HAPPINESS at all our guests at all times. Our entire team of Gautam and Gautam Group is very happy to receive such a nice feedback and committed to provide best services at all the time Our award winning Team of Gautam and Gautam Group Also Known as "G and G Group" or G N G Group as a brand is known for – all in all, an experience that a guest will cherish for a lifetime. We do so look forward to your early return! With Warm Wishes and Regards Gulshan Kumar Sales Manager Gautam and Gautam Group Contact : +91- 7060507245, +91-5832-267070 Email : [email protected]

This temple is quite famous and beautiful. Now-a-days people have to go there by helicopter which takes time only 5 minutes, but cost is Rs. 6800/-. That place is situated at quite high altitude and temp. is very low. If you are lucky, you can see snow fall also sometime. Lord Shiva is there.

We started off our kedarnath trek from Nainital city on motorbike. We started early morning and reached Gairsain at afternoon. After our lunch and haults at Aadibadri we reached Karnprayag by evening. We continue our drive till Guptkashi and had our night stay there. Next morning we left for Soneprayag with beautiful waterfall and Himalaya view along our way. Roads were muddy and filled with water, one has to be carefull while driving. I agree with both post above. Good jeans are fine. Russians dress more like we did in the 1950's, before we became slob's and gave up carring about how we look. Russian woman do like their fashion, and I think every Russian man own's a leather jacket? Dress in what I would call normal, clean, cloths. Real shirts, not T shirts, no torn jeans, swet's with tears/holes in them & so on and you will be fine. AIM.

''and I think every Russian man own's a leather jacket?''

*starts to laugh*

Passing on more than just good genes.

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas, looked just like her mom as she reached into the actress’ fashion archives for her 21st birthday.

Carys shared a series of photos celebrating the milestone, sporting a glamorous Ungaro pink slip pink dress with lace accents and roses designed on the top.

She added minimal jewelry and strappy heels to accessorize the statement gown, and she styled her hair in loose curly locks.

The Oscar winner, 54, looked remarkably similar to her daughter with her their matching hairstyle and silver strappy heels.

Carys smiled while posing for photos in the dress and even included one of a boy kissing her on the cheek while she held a flower.

Carys has been in the fashion world since she was a teenager, when she made her magazine cover debut posing alongside her mom for Town & Country in 2018.

“Fashion has been so important in my life, because my mom is like a fashion icon to me,” she told the outlet at the time. “I’m always looking through her closet.”
