Q. How to reach Kedarnath from Gaurikund? A. It used to be a six-hour long trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund that went past Rambara and Garur Chatti before the paths were washed away by the flash-floods of 2013. Now a new route has opened up which is 14 kilometre long starting from Gaurikund. The route goes past Jangal Chatti, nearly 4 kilometre away, followed by Chhoti Linchuli and Badi Linchuli before crossing the Mandakini River and heading to the south face of the Kedarnath peak. You can take the alternate route the goes up from Sonprayag, just 5 kilometre short of Gaurikund, and rounds up Kedarnath, going past Gomkara, Dev Vishnu and Dhumgajgiri. Q. When does the Badri Kedar Festival take place? A. The annual Badri Kedar Festival happens in June and is one of the highlights of Kedarnath. The entire town is decorated with flags, festoons and flowers and carries a festive aura. Since this is a summer festival, a time when the temple opens its doors to pilgrims, the place is packed with devotees and avid photographers and travellers. The Badri Kedar Festival goes on for eight days when artists, dancers, singers and painters come to Kedarnath and showcase their art in this fabulous setting amid all the festivity. It is a great way to get a sense of Uttarakhand’s history, culture and traditions. Q. Are there any hotels in Kedarnath? A. You can stay at the GMVN Tourist Bungalow in Kedarnath. This can be reached after a 14 kilometre trek from Gaurikund. The guesthouse has Economy Rooms, Family Suites and Dormitory with basic amenities such as attached bath and hot water supply. The property remains shut all winter owing to severe snowfall. Most other hotels are either in Rudraprayag or Sitapur, which is about 50 kilometre from Kedarnath. You can spend the night at your hotel in Rudraprayag and make a day trip to Kedarnath Temple. Q. Can Kedarnath be visited in monsoon? A. July to September are the monsoon months in Kedarnath, making landslides quite common in the area, leading to roadblocks. Rainfall makes the slopes treacherous for treks, and since it pours very heavily you can seldom venture outdoors. Though the temple remains open all of monsoon, it may not be the most pleasant times to visit Kedarnath. Q. Which are the most popular treks around Kedarnath? A. You can pursue the Gandhi Sarovar or Chorabari Tal trek which begins by the main bridge before the town where this is a paved pathway that crosses the Mandakini River and comes to a halt about 4 kilometre north of the Chorabari Glacier. It takes about two hours. On its edge is the Chorabari Tal, a placid lake also called Gandhi Sarovar since the Mahatma’s ashes were scattered here. You can even take a trek to the Bhairava Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Bhairava that is visible from the Kedarnath Temple. There is a path running diagonally along the hill surrounded by prayer flags. Close to the site is a cliff by the name of Bhairava Jhamp. Q. Can I visit Sonprayag from Kedarnath? A. Sonprayag is about 20 kilometre from Kedarnath. It is a religious site en route to the Kedarnath Temple which is among the Char Dhams. Sonprayag is a beautiful place lying at the confluence of the Basuki and Mandakini Rivers. Q. Which is the last railhead to Kedarnath? A. The Haridwar Railway Station is the closest railhead to Kedarnath. You can get direct trains to Haridwar from New Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Lucknow among others. Some of the prominent trains that Haridwar receives include Mussoorie Express, Jan Shatabdi Express, AC Special Express, and Shatabdi Express. Once you arrive at the Haridwar Railway Station, you can hire a bus or a cab to Gaurikund which is about 125 kilometre away, and further on do the trek to Kedarnath Temple. Q. Are there buses from Dehradun for Kedarnath? A. Dehradun runs direct buses to Kedarnath by way of Volvo AC sleeper, semi-sleeper, non-AC sleeper and seater buses. The 254 kilometre distance is covered by these buses from Dehradun to Gaurikund. The remainder of the distance to the Kedarnath Temple needs to be accomplished by foot. Q. How to go on Vasuki Tal trek from Kedarnath? A. The trek begins from a place close to the GMVN Tourist Bungalow and goes all the way to the Vasuki Tal which is at 13,566 foot. The 9-kilometre-long trek takes anywhere between 4 to 5 hours to complete. Once you get to the beautiful Vasuki Tal, you will be surrounded by snow- dusted peaks of Chaukhamba, their beauty reflected in the serene, still waters of the lake. Q. When does the Kedarnath Temple open? A. The Kedarnath Temple closes in the winter months due to heavy snowfall, and remains closed for six months between November and April. During this period, the idol of Lord Kedarnath along with the palanquin is moved to Ukhimath near Guptakashi, with the priests and other residents relocating to nearby villages. You can visit the Kedarnath Temple anytime from April to November, the summer and monsoon months.

History of Kedarnath Temple

There are many stories about the origin of the Kedarnath temple . Some say that it was built in the 2nd century by Raja Bhoj of Malwa. Other tales claim that Adi Shankaracharya made it in the 8th century. As per historians, after the war of Kurukshetra, Pandavas sought to meet Lord Shiva to seek forgiveness for killing their cousins. Lord Shiva wasn’t happy with them and refused to meet. He (Lord Shiva) then left Kashi, and appeared as a Nandi the bull in Guptkashi. When Pandavas found out about this, they immediately left for Guptkashi. Yet again, Shiva escaped and reappeared in five different parts at different places. The face of the bull appeared at Rudranath, arms emerged at Tungnath, the locks in Kalpeshwar, the navel and stomach at Madhyamaheshwar, and the hump at Kedarnath. All these five temples are collectively called Panch Kedar.

As per the second tale associated with the temple, Nara-Narayana, two incarnations of Lord Vishnu, performed penance here. Pleased by their devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in front of them. Nara-Narayana requested Lord Shiva to stay at Kedarnath in his original form. Lord Shiva granted their wish and made Kedarnath as his home. Here, Lord Shiva is known as Kedareshwara.

Architecture of Kedarnath Temple

This impressive high-altitude lake, located at an altitude of 4328 metres in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, offers a sweeping view of the Chaukhamba peaks. Further, making the aura of the place more divine are Brahmakamals – known to be one-of-its-kind in the world – blooming around its edges. The best time to visit Kedarnath temple is from May to October. Doors of the temple open on Akshaya Tritiya (usually falls in end of April or early May) and are closed soon after Kartik Purnima (late October or early November) for duration of about 6 months. As Kedarnath temple lies in the lap of mountains of Uttarakhand, monsoon is best avoided as rains cause landslides and other problems for the yatra.

Exact timing can be confirmed by the driver on the day of your trip. Put your luggage in the vehicle and settle down on your seat. Today is the first day of our kedarnath yatra and we will go to Guptkashi. On the way, we will cover Dev Prayag, Rudraprayag and Dhari Devi Temple. transferred to Guptkashi. Day: 3 Trek back from Kedarnath to Gauri Kund and then drive back to Guptkashi

Can Kedarnath trek be done in one day?

If you are a regular trekker and have done multiple high altitude trek and you have a fabulous physic then only you can do Kedarnath trek in one day. Otherwise for a normal person with average physical activity in his day to day life it's really tough to complete Kedarnath trekking in one day.So it's recommended to complete a one-way trek in a day and return back the next day.

Is there snowfall in Kedarnath?

Yes, there is heavy snowfall during the winter months, due to which the Kedarnath Yatra remains closed during winters. So if you want to enjoy snowfall, we recommend you to visit Kedarnath in October when the snowfall begins, and you can enjoy the surreal beauty along with the snowfall. October is the best month to experience snowfall in Kedarnath. After this month, the Kedarnath Yatra gets closed, and you are not allowed to go to Kedarnath due to roadblocks.

Why is Kedarnath closed for 6 months?

As Kedarnath is situated at an elevation of 3584 meters, this place experiences heavy snowfalls in winters. Due to this, the road gets blocked with snow, and the temples get covered in the blanket of snow. The temperature dips to negatives making it difficult for humans to survive. So the temple remains operational only in the summer months, that is, from May to October, and remains closed from November to April. The opening and closing dates vary every year as it depends on Akshay Tritiya and Bhai Dooj of the Hindu calendar to be the opening and closing dates of the Kedarnath temple.

Can we go to Kedarnath by car?

Motorable route is available only till Gaurikund, and from there, you need to either trek or take a pony, porter, or palki that can take you to the temple. But you can take your vechile only till Sonprayag and you can take shuttle from sitapur to gaurikund. So you can come to Sonprayag in a car which is well connected with the major cities in India such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Pune, etc. Later park your car in a paid parking in Sonprayag and move forward to Kedarnath.

Another way is to come to Phata/ Gupkashi/ Sersi Kedarnath in car and then book Kedarnath Helicopter services for temple darshan and return back to your car.

Yes, we provide a non-AC transportation facility from Haridwar to Gaurikund in vehicles like Dzire, Innova, Ertiga, Tavera, and Tempo Traveller. Tourists are provided transportation facilities, as they move from Haridwar to Rishikesh to Guptkashi to SonPrayag from where tourists will have to trek to Kedarnath, which is a 16 km trek. You can also avail A/c vehicle at some extra cost but keep note that A/c will not work in hilly areas.

What are the different modes of transportation through which you can visit Kedarnath temple?

Tourists can come to Sonprayag through diverse means of transportation like cars like Dzire, Innova, Ertiga, Tavera, or Tempo Traveller and from Sonprayag you need to take a shared cab for Gaurikund as outside vichile is not allowed to ply ahead of Sonprayag. From Gaurikund to Kedarnath they can either trek or take a pony, porter, or palki to visit the temple. Another option available to the tourists is that they come by car to Phata, Guptkashi, or Sersi Kedarnath and then book a helicopter service for temple darshan.

Day 1 : Dehradun to Guptkashi / Sitapur (250 KM/7 Hours drive)

Morning pick-up from Dehradun Airport/Haridwar Railway Station & proceeds to Guptkashi by Road. It is a beautiful drive along Ganga and Alakhnanda River. On arrival at the hotel, relax in the evening and prepare for Kedarnath Darshan on next day. Visit Dev prayag – Devprayag is merger Point of Alakhnanda River and Bhagirathi River. From this place, it's called Ganga. Visit Dhari Devi temple, Ardhnarishwar temple and Rudraprayag (Merger point of Alakhnanda and Mandakini River).

Day 2 : Kedarnath Darshan

After breakfast proceeds to the helipad to board your pre-booked helicopter for Kedarnath. On arrival at Kedarnath helipad proceed to Kedarnath Temple. It is a 10-minute walk and a 500-meter walk. We provide VIP Darshan passes for hassle-free Darshan. Get the blessing of Kedarnath Ji or Lord Shiva. Do prayer and rituals at the mighty temple. Visit Bhim Sheela and Sankaracharya Samadhi. Spend some time in this holy place and feel the spirituality in the air. Later return to the helipad to board the helicopter and return to Guptkashi / Sitapur for a night stay. If you want you can stay at Kedarnath also. But very basics hotels are available in Kedarnath. We provide accommodation at Kedarnath if you want to stay.

Day 3 : Guptkashi / Sitapur to Badrinath (180 KM – 7 to 8-hour drive)

Get early morning and get ready to proceed for Badrinath Dham. After breakfast check out from the hotel for Badrinath temple. En Route visits Ukhimath Omkareshwar temple which is the winter home of Kedarnath as well as you get the blessing of all Panch Kedar by visiting this Temple. Also, explore scenic beauty by visiting Chopta. Along with Narsingh temple in Joshimath, Vishnu Prayag and Hanuman Chatti. Check into the hotel and proceed for God Badrinath Darshan. Get the bath in Tapt Kund at the foot of Badrinath Temple. It is natural hot water Kund in Badrinath then proceed to the temple for VIP Darshan. Arrangements are made for comfortable Darshan. Offer prayer and get the blessing of Lord Vishnu in one of the major Char Dham. In the temple, premises get the blessing of God Hanuman Mata Lakshmi Maa Durga and later returned to the hotel for dinner and night stay

Day 4 : Badrinath to Rudraprayag (180 KM – 5 to 6-hour drive)

Today morning after breakfast proceed to Mana village the last village of India in this region visit the origin of Saraswati River Bhim pul Vyas Gufa Ganesh Gufa, Chhatrapal Temple and then return to hotel check out from the hotel and proceed to Rudraprayag. En Route sees Shankaracharya math Karan Prayag and Nand Prayag. Check into the hotel in Rudraprayag for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5 : Rudraprayag to Dehradun Airport (150 KM/5 Hours drive)

Day 1 haridwar - guptkashi (8 hrs).

Morning meet our representative at your Airport / Railway Station / Hotel. Drive towards Guptkashi . Enroute you can see the beautiful river Mandakini at Tilwara . The Mandakini river comes from Kedarnath , drive alongside the river to reach Guptakashi , visit Ardh Narishwar Temple in Guptakashi. Check into the hotel arrival in Guptakashi. Overnight stay at Guptakashi. ( Meals : Dinner)

Day 2 Guptkashi - Sonprayag - Kedarnath

Morning after breakfast, today we will go to Kedarnath. To reach Kedarnath you will have two options. One if by trekking and other is by Air via Helicopter ( at your own cost ).

By Helicopter: Morning our driver will transfer you to your Helipad location ( Phata , Guptkashi, Sirsi etc) as per helicopter ticket time. Kindly inform the driver timings of helicopter mentioned on the ticket previous day. Different aviation has different location for their helicopter service. Our driver will provide you pick and drop to hotel. Kindly inform the driver timings of helicopter mentioned on the ticket. Advance booking is highly recommended for the helicopter. Note: Helicopter Tickets are not included in this package. By Trek: To reach Kedarnath by trekking route first you have to reach Gaurikund . We will drive to Sonprayag early in the morning after breakfast. Our car will drop to Sonprayag . From Sonprayag 5 kms drive to Gaurikund local jeep is available. This sharing basis jeep guests can book directly at own cost. Gaurikund to Kedarnath is further 14 Kms trek.

After reaching the Kedarnath visit Kedarnath Temple . Check in to the hotel/ashram. Visit Shankaracharya Samadhi. Overnight stay at Kedarnath. ( Meals : Breakfast and Dinner)

Day 3 Kedarnath â Sonprayag - Guptkashi

Morning after breakfast explore nearby areas by walk at Kedarnath . Later reach Guptkashi as per your choice by trek or Helicopter.

By Helicopter: Inform the driver when you leave for Kedarnath about your approximate return time and helipad name according to ticket. Our driver will pick up you from helipad and transfer you to your hotel.

By Trek: Inform the driver approximate return time. Once you reach Gaurikund from Kedarnath by trek you can take local jeep till Sonprayag . Our driver will meet here. Due to parking issue keep driverâs contact number with you and call him when you reach sonprayag so he can pick up you.

Gaurikund to Sonprayag local jeep at your own cost. Guests can book that at own cost. At arrival check in to hotel in Guptkashi. Overnight stay at Guptkashi . ( Meals : Breakfast and Dinner)

Day 4 Guptkashi - Rishikesh - Haridwar (8 hrs)

Morning after breakfast, check out from hotel. Transfer to Rishikesh / Haridwar . On the way visit Rudraprayag and Dev Prayag .

Important Expert Travel Tips for Chardham:-

While visiting Hindu mythological sites, shrines and temples, one should remove shoes and cover head with a piece of cloth before entering the Holy Place.
Do carry your personal daily use products toiletries, creams, moisturizers, sunscreen etc.
Pack a medical kit with painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges, Antiseptic cream, Iodine, tube-squeeze cream and medicines for cold and fever. Carry your routine medicines, as you might find only limited and general medicine at such remote locations.
Carry dark chocolates, dry fruits, Glucose (Glucon D), toffees. They will provide your instant energy during the trekking and during long jams.
It can rain anytime here, so it is mandatory to carry an umbrella and raincoat along with your rain shoes.
To protect yourself from the cold winds here, carry a windcheater, woolen socks, monkey caps and a muffler. These will enable you to withstand the chill that comes with wind on the upper Himalayan region.
When asking for directions, speak to shopkeepers, not pedestrians. Check with at least two persons or more.
Do not take pictures if cameras are not allowed in any particular area. Do not play with the sentiments of any particular religion.
At least a month before the Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises for the trip 4 months in advance.
Though self-managed tours happen to be economical, it is advisable for your Chardham yatra to go for a guided tour arranged by an expert local travel agent.
Carry extra batteries and films for your camera, as electricity is not regular in such remote places.
Avoid traveling in the rainy season as there are a lot of landslides during that time.
Book your trip well in advance if you are travelling close to the temple opening dates, there is a heavy rush of pilgrims.
Alcohol or non-vegetarian food is not permitted during Char Dham Yatra Tour.
Drink packaged water or boiled water only.
Accommodation Expectation: The provided hotels are of a standard Category unless you have booked Deluxe / Luxury package. Expect Basic Home stay / Guest houses in Kedarnath.
Meals Exceptions: We provided Breakfast and Dinner to our guests it will be basic Indian vegetarian meals (We do not offer any meals in Kedarnath)
From Sonprayag to Gaurikund our vehicles are not allowed and hence one has to go with Union Taxi by paying 40-50 Rupee Person one way.

Train Connectivity: Rishikesh, Haridwar and Dehradun are well connected to major cities of India by Railway Network.

Air Connectivity: Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun. Helicopter service to Kedarnath and Badrinath is available from Delhi, Dehradun, Phata, Augustmuni and Gauchar near Rudraprayag and Jollygrant Airport Dehradun.

If self-driving in Uttarakhand during Chardham

Always keep your vehicle on left side of the Road.
Use Horn at curves on hills, never overtake the overtaking vehicle.
One should not drive more than 8 hours a day in hilly region.
Avoid driving after sunset, as it is not allowed in hilly area of Uttarakhand.
Use shoes instead of slippers while driving.
Check your Brakes and Hand Brakes before starting journey.
Check the Headlights, Break light and Parking lights of your vehicle.
Always give way to uphill vehicles.
Keep your vehicle's valid documents with you to avoid inconvenience.
Before journey, make sure that fuel tank of your vehicle is full; in case of landslides you might have to take alternate long routes.
Ensure to refuel, where ever easily you get chance, during season there might be long queues in Petrol Pumps at main stations.
Carry first aid box with you.
Do not drink and drive.
In case of traffic jam, park your vehicle at the end of the queue. If you initiate a parallel queue, the traffic from other side might force you to drive in reverse gear, till you reach again at end of the original queue. And you may find it very difficult to drive long in reverse gear on a hilly road.
Do not compete with local vehicles/drivers. They know the terrain very well.

Day 01: Dehradun - Kedarnath - Badrinath – Dehradun.

Attraction:

Morning take off from Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun by 07:15 AM to Phata/ Sersi helipad.
Due to Government regulations guests are to be shifted to shuttle helicopter from same helipad to fly to Kedarnath.
Upon arrival at Kedarnath helipad walk till Mandir which is about 300 mts from helipad. VIP darshan slips at the temple are arranged for you to have a special puja. Post Darshan fly to Phata/Sirsi & fly to Badrinath by 10 AM.
Upon arrival at Badrinath helipad transfer to the temple by Car for VIP Darshan & Post Darshan youare transferred to the helipad to commence return journey to Dehradun by 1 PM. end of Holy Yatra upon arrival at Dehradun heliport.

Terms & Conditions

Flying is subject to Full Load in Helicopter i.e. 5/6 Person on seat basis flying.
Covid-19 Guidelines will be applicable as per the Government of Uttarakhand.
Flying in hills are subject to many factors like delayed clearances from Air Force & Civil Aviation, VVIP movements, valley flying by Indian Air Force (NOTAM), bad weather, sudden occurrence of technical.
Snag in helicopter, illness of flying crew or late reporting of the guests at the helipads it may be plusminus 2 hours.
Any passenger weighing above 80 Kg, shall have to pay extra weight charges @ INR 250/kg for the excess weight, toward the extra weight charges shuttle service at Sersi on direct payment basis.
Our company shall not be liable for any medical emergency on the ground to the party. Therefore, in your own interest, guests are hereby advised to kindly consult a doctor and get medical checkup done, before commencing the yatra. Medical check-up is mainly required if a guest has any medical suffering/condition.
Any donations, tips, pitthu and porter charges shall be borne by the guests only.

Carriage By Air Act, 1972

The liability of the company for damage sustained in the event of the death or wounding of a passenger or any other bodily injuiry suffered by passenger or by his registered baggage during the course of carriage by air will be governed by the provisions of sections 4,5,6 and the rules contained in the second Schedule of Carriage by Air Act 1972 with certain exceptions, adaptations, modifications, etc as notified in the Govt. of India, Ministry of Civil Aviation Notification and as amended from time to time.

Infant below 2 years/12 kg are carried free of charge. In case of verification of age, ID proof/birth certificate of the child shall be checked.
Hand Baggage Allowance only one handbag weighing a maximum of 5 kgs is allowed per passenger.
Helicopter Weight Limtation Passengers would be taken on board depending up on the load and temperature conditions. Pilots call will be final. Maximum weight capacity of the helicopter is 420 kg (excluding baggage weight) at these destinations. All passengers on board must be within this limit. Hence, passengers are advised to provide us their exact weights at the time of booking and carry baggage within the permissible limit.
Disputes as to legality, interpretation, application or performance of service or any of its terms and conditions shall be governed by the laws of Dehradun Jurisdiction.
Payment Terms the booking has to be done in advance with a deposit of 50% of the charter amount. Full amount has to be deposited 7 days prior to date of journey. Rescheduling of booking to a next date will be done subject to availability and on payment of 10% of the cost. This will be permitted only if informed 10 days before arrival date. In case the rescheduling is requested with less than 10 days to the arrival, then the booking would be treated as cancelled and a fresh booking will be given subject to availability.

Cancellation/Refund Policy

If passengers wish to cancel their booking then they will have to pay following cancellation chargesMore than 15 days before the departure date — 30% of total charter amount.

Between 08th to 15th day before departure date — 50% of total charter amount.
Up to 07th day before the departure date — No Refund.
No show – No Refund.
Bad weather – Full refund toward the proportionate amount of the unutilized sector(s)/Flying , minus INR 20,000 toward the flight preparation and ground arrangement charges.

Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra: Badrinath in Chamoli district will open on May 12

The online registration most popular Hindu pilgrimages in India has begun. The Uttarakhand tourism department announed that the online registration for the Char Dham Yatra, which includes pilgrimage of four holy sites - Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri started on the tourism department's portal

The doors of Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath will open on May 10 on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya while that of Badrinath shrine will open on May 12. Every year, lakhs of devotees visit the holy pilgrimage which remains shut for around six months every year.

Gangotri Dham is set to open its doors at precisely 12:25 pm local time. Shri Badrinath Dham is scheduled to open on May 12, at 6 am. The doors for Shri Kedarnath Dham will open from May 10 onwards at 7 am.

How to register for Char Dham Yatra 2024:

1) Visit the official Char Dham yatra registration website at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in

2) Click on the Register or login option

3) Register by entering your personal details such as phone name, number, email id etc.

4) Complete the registration by entering the OTP sent on your mobile phone.

5) As the new dashboard appears, add details of your tour such as travel dates, number of tourists, tour name, tour type and so on

6) Once your registration is complete, a unique registration number will be sent to your mobile phone and you'll be able to download the registration letter for Chardham yatra.

Apart from the web, registrations can also be made through mobile application - ‘Tourist Care Uttarakhand’ which is available on Android and iOs. WhatsApp registration is also available, You need to simply message ‘Yatra’ to initiate the registration process on +91 8394833833.

Meanwhile, last week, the Chamoli District Magistrate Himanshu Khurana had visited the Badrinath Dham and and instructed officials that before the start of the Yatra, works related to sewer line repair, improvement of internal routes, water, electricity, street lights and vehicle parking should be completed and signage should be installed for passenger convenience.

IRCTC tour package

IRCTC has announced its 11 days 12 nights packages from Mumbai, Delhi with tour dates on 11-22 May, 18-29 May and 25 May to 5 June. Pilgrims can visit the official website of IRCTC tourism i.e. irctctourism.com to book the packages depending on their origin destination. Speaking of the places that will be covered, the air tour package start with flight from Mumbai to Delhi and then head to places including Haridwar – Barkot – Jankichatti – Yamunotri – Uttrakashi – Gangotri – Guptkashi – Kedarnath - Gaurikund - Sitapur- Badrinath-Rudraprayag - Haridwar- Delhi- Mumbai.
