Nee.

Bike Rebel Without a Cause

Cyclopaat, an alter ego with a twist

Tijdrit Almere 2022 – ITT

klimtijdrit tour 2022

Last Saturday, April 16th, I participated in the individual time trial event “Tijdrit Almere 2022”.

It’s organized by Start2Finish, Tri2One being the main sponsor.

As the name implies, it’s in my hometown and the long distance is 42 kms, three laps of 14 kms each.

Until 2019, this event took place in my backyard, the wide open polder outside the city.

I participated only once in that, before it changed the location to the outskirts of Almere-Haven – the oldest neighbourhood of Almere – for the 2019 edition last minute.

The new course is following the dyke along the “Gooimeer” lake, so also on that one, there’s no hiding from the wind…

I didn’t realize it had been only some 7 months since the last event, as it was cancelled in 2020 and the “Tijdrit Almere 2021” was last October .

As I only participate for fun – there’s no chance in hell I will ever make it to the podium – I strive to beat my best time each edition.

That was not much of a challenge in 2021, as I was still recovering from serious physical trouble the winter before the 2019 edition .

Even so, I was a bit disappointed then, as I was hoping for a 1:05-ish time, but the wind spoiled that and I finished in 1:08.

So, this year I was aiming for 1:05 again or at least a faster time than back in October.

I will never know if I would have been able to do so, but the annoying head wind on the way out was already spoiling half of that chance.

Then again, the tail wind was helpful on most of the way back, although I know from experience that it never negates the disadvantage of a head wind.

But contrary to the previous editions, there was no clear “switch point” to get from the bike lane to the main road.

This used to be some 500-600 meters in, but this time that was lacking and I – like most others 1 – was following the bicycle path until I ran into a parked car.

The volunteer that put it there, told me to get onto the main road – through the grass – so I did, but I was like “What the hell?!”…

Little did I know that this confusion would lead to more trouble in the next lap.

klimtijdrit tour 2022

In the bottom right of the picture above, you can see the switch point during lap one and three, but the switch point in the top left effectively killed my ambitions or what was left of them anyway.

At that spot, in lap two, there was a volunteer gesturing to switch to the main road, so as I slowed down and started to move to the left, another rider tried to squeeze his way through, clipping me and causing me to tumble and crash.

While swearing at me that I was a stupid fuck that didn’t watch were I was going, he slit through and managed to stay upright.

Despite the already lower speed, I crashed so hard, that I first remained laying down to make sure I wouldn’t faint and then needed some time to find my bearings, feeling an all too familiar pain between my ribs.

As I have had a punctured lung before – I didn’t know that until they checked me in the hospital – I was a little weary to get on my bike again, but for less serious injuries like road rash and such, it’s better to continue moving / pedalling.

I was not feeling dizzy or nauseous – as I was when I did puncture a lung – so I got back on but a) there was no point in pushing as my target time was now well out of reach and b) I couldn’t breath deeply anymore or get out of the saddle, so any serious effort was out of the question anyway.

I  did notice that the car further on was now parked elsewhere and most riders took that passage to switch, so I did the same in lap three.

I finished in an official time of 1:10:41 and a moving time slower than in October, although  only – all things considered – by just over a minute.

Garmin recording here – my lap times were 22:36, 24:41 and 23:24 respectively.

Which means I would have been faster than in October, given that a “flat” schedule, maybe even a negative split, is what I’m capable of.

The desired 1:05 would have been hard to achieve, but not impossible.

While the organizer “overall” try their best to create a nice ITT event, they drop the ball on some mandatory measures.

For instance, there was pothole without a warning sign that caused (at least) one rider to crash and be taken into an ambulance with – what looked like – a serious head wound.

But another pothole further on did have a clear warning sign in front of it.

The road is, like most in my backyard and many bicycle paths inside the city it as well, in a bad condition but potholes should have a warning sign, especially in a race.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s no – official – concern raised by anyone and Start2Finish would not mention it on their socials.

So far, I’ve not seen anything, only lauding reports on the “main event”, the Dutch Duathlon (run-bike-run) Championship.

Apart for those actually having a shot at the win, the “Tijdrit Almere 2022” event was mainly a side dish…

1 As I started in the 2nd batch, there we only some 25 ladies and a few guys that departed before me…

The alpha and the omega

While the Pordoi marked the beginning of Fausto Coppi’s career at the Giro d’Italia – they made their debut together in 1940, the year in which the Campionissimo took his first overall victory – the Stelvio – rising to 2,757 metres in altitude – was the zenith, the peak and crowning glory.

The pass first featured on the route of the Corsa Rosa on June 1 st 1953, on the second‑to‑last stage. By then, it looked as if, overall, everything had been settled already. In the previous stage, which finished in Bolzano, Coppi had tried has hard as he could to distance himself from the race leader, Koblet, but to no avail. The two then made a deal, which Koblet agreed to. The Campionissimo promised not to attack him the following day, in return for stage victory. With Fausto sitting 1’59” behind Hugo, the Giro was apparently over.

What happened the following day was one of those incidents that make cycling the most beautiful sport in the world. Despite being in tip-top shape, Coppi – loyal as he was – didn’t feel like breaking any truce, so he decided he would not pull away. However, should his rival attack in the first place, he would feel entitled to respond. So he asked the young Defilippis to step up the pace halfway through that new, brutal climb, which he did. With 12 km remaining to the summit, Defilippis put the hammer down, and Koblet set off to chase him – a terrible, expensive mistake.

The deal was broken. Fausto counterattacked, and proceeded to pass him, as Koblet started falling behind. Coppi cleared that unprecedented climb alone, 2’48” ahead of Bartali, 3’27” ahead of Defilippis and 4’25” ahead of Koblet, who tried to give it all along the closing climb. Riding frantically and taking great risk, the Swiss managed to shave seconds off the gap, however crashing twice on the descent, and finishing 3’28” behind. The Campionissimo took the stage, as well as the fifth overall victory of his astonishingly successful career.

That date, June 1 st 1953, marked at the same time the debut of the Stelvio Pass in the history of cycling, and Coppi’s final outstanding achievement at the Giro.

It was the alpha for one and the omega for the other.

That bond, however, has never been broken. Instead, it has grown even stronger. Their names are now inseparably entwined, and everybody thinks of the Stelvio as the most iconic Cima Coppi.

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Mikel LANDA MEANA

Dumoulin stopped for an emergency nature break on the lower slopes of the closing climb (Umbrailpass), as the peloton waited for him for a few minutes. Zakarin eventually pulled away, followed by Quintana, Pozzovivo and Nibali, although not at a cracking pace. Dumoulin set off on a solo chase, and managed to clear the summit 2’20” behind them. Nibali popped out when the Umbrailpass was a little more than one km away, slowly reeling in one rider after another. Along the descent, he eventually jumped across to Landa, the last one remaining from the previous break. Flying down all the way to the line, Vincenzo took a masterful sprint win, after 17 stages without an Italian winner – the longest run of misfortune in the history of cycling.

2014: Stage 16, Ponte di Legno – Val Martello

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Dario CATALDO

Quintana stormed to victory in Val Martello, dropping Hesjedal in the stage finale, but controversy broke out over the handling of the Stelvio descent in the fog and rain. The race direction told the riders to maintain their positions, without attacking, while the Giro profile on Twitter mentioned the descent would be neutralised, hence causing confusion in the peloton. Some riders (Majka) stopped to change clothes, while others, Quintana first, rode hard to an advantage of nearly two minutes on their closest rivals by the end of the descent. Quintana snatched the leader’s jersey from his fellow compatriot Uran, who finished over four minutes back.

1980: Stage 20, Cles – Sondrio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Jean-René BERNAUDEAU

With the climb to the Stelvio set at 90 km out, this was an ‘imitation’ Alpine stage which actually provided considerable room to breathe, especially for Italian riders, who contended for overall victory sprinting along the flat stretches of the stage.

Despite their technical disadvantage, Cyrille Guimard and Hinault rode masterfully. Three Renault riders broke away with 50 km to go to the top of the Stelvio. When the break reached Prato allo Stelvio, Bernaudeau pulled away, solo. Hinault, who had fallen a few minutes behind, also attacked in Prato allo Stelvio, joined by Panizza, Prim and Battaglin. After attacking repeatedly, the Frenchman eventually managed to clip off and jump across to Bernaudeau. The two continued together for a further 80 kilometres, as if in a time trial all the way to the finish in Sondrio, with their lead extending rather than shrinking. Hinault let Bernaudeau win the stage, and rode into the pink jersey. The former GC leader, Panizza, finished over 4 minutes back, while Saronni fell nearly 9 minutes behind.

1975: Stage 21, Alleghe – Passo dello Stelvio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Francisco GALDÓS GAUNA

Despite repeated attempts, Galdos did not succeed in dropping Bertoglio. The Italian responded each time, counter-attacking in the end. Galdos gave up on further attacks, but Bertoglio eventually left stage victory to his opponent, taking overall victory instead.

1972: Stage 17, Livigno – Passo dello Stelvio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Jose Manuel FUENTE

Fuente attacked along the Stelvio, pushing a virtually impossible gear ratio, and shaving two minutes off Merckx’s advantage. However, the Belgian had such a margin that his overall lead was safe.

1965: Stage 20, Madesimo – Passo dello Stelvio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: BATTISTINI Graziano

The stage, originally designed to finish in Solda (197 km), was re-routed to the Stelvio owing to the bad weather. The racing conditions were extreme: the snow kept falling, and an avalanche was blocking road 300 metres from the finish, forcing the riders to carry their bicycles over piles of snow. Time was taken at the -400 metre marker: Adorni finished in first, sitting close to Zilioli on GC.

1961: Stage 20, Trento – Bormio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Charly GAUL

The route was originally designed to include climbs up the Tonale and Gavia, and to finish at Passo Resia. However, a landslide along the Gavia called for a replacement stage. Van Looy, sitting 7 minutes behind on GC, made an early breakaway and cleared the Giovo in first. By the time he reached the foot of the Stelvio, he had become the virtual Maglia Rosa, with an 8’10” lead over the peloton. The Belgian, however, cracked along the ascent. Gaul attacked and pulled away, solo. Anquetil tried to drop Pambianco: two kilometres before the summit, he was leading by one minute. Arnaldo, however, bridged across to him, leaving him behind and reaching the summit half a minute ahead of the Frenchman. Gaul took the stage, while Pambianco finished in second, shaving one minute off Anquetil’s margin, and extending his overall lead.

1956: Stage 18, Sondrio – Merano

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Aurelio DEL RIO

Gaul punctured three times, finishing six minutes behind the winner, Maule. The location of the categorised summit along the route was poorly chosen: the Stelvio was placed halfway, ahead of 85 kilometres on descending and flat roads.

1953: Stage 19, Bolzano – Bormio

FIRST RIDER ACROSS THE SUMMIT: Fausto COPPI

The first-ever ascent to the Stelvio made this stage legendary before the riders even took the start. The previous day, Coppi already congratulated Koblet as Giro winner, but his team manager at Bianchi still urged him to have a go on the Stelvio. Coppi asked Ettore Milano to take a picture with Koblet, and when the latter took on his sunglasses, he was showing signs of weakness, which Milano reported to Coppi. The Bianchi squad pushed with all of their might since the start. When Defilipps clipped off, 12 km before the Stelvio, Coppi chased after him, while Koblet fell behind. Coppi blasted away, and crossed the line three and a half minutes ahead of Koblet, winning the Giro. After the stage, Koblet would say that he was suffering from bronchitis, he had crashed twice along the descent and he had punctured at 7 km out. However, some argued that Koblet’s fatigue didn’t actually come from bronchitis, but rather from overdoing amphetamines (which, at that time, were not banned) the previous day. Coppi rode the Stelvio in a 46×23 gear ratio.

2024 Tour of Flanders riders to watch

Men's race - 2024 riders to watch.

A mass crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday ruled out some of his biggest contenders, including Wout van Aert, who suffered fractured collarbone and ribs. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar decided to skip the Ronde this year to focus on the preparation of the Giro d'Italia. The big names who will be competing are:

  • Mathieu van der Poel (NED/Alpecin Deceuninck): The two-time winner (2020, 2022) is considered the undisputed favourite after dominating the E3 Saxo Classic and finishing second at last week's Gent-Wevelgem, and with archrival van Aert not competing.
  • Matteo Jorgenson (USA/Team Visma | Lease a Bike): The American rider is expected to lead his team following his win at the Dwars door Vlaanderen and the injuries carried by both Tiesji Benoot and Jan Tratnik. This season he also claimed the general classification at the Paris-Nice.
  • Alberto Bettiol: The Italian is a former winner of the Ronde and, despite suffering from cramps at the recent Dwars door Vlaanderen, has demonstrated a good form by winning the Milano-Torino and finishing fifth at the Milan-San Remo.

Women's race - 2024 riders to watch

  • Lotte Kopecky (BEL/SD Worx-Protime): The Belgian superstar and reigning world champion is aiming for a third consecutive Flanders title after her convincing victories at Strade Bianche and Nokere Koerse so far this spring.
  • Demi Vollering (NED/SD Worx-Protime): The Tour de France Femmes reigning champion, who finished third at Strade Bianche, is ready to step up as a leader if Kopecky finds herself in difficulty.
  • Elisa Balsamo (ITA/Lidl-Trek): Italy's 2021 road world champion has impressed this season, showing that she can both climb and sprint by winning the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Brugge-De Panne.

Process over outcome: Runner-up finish provides Scottie Scheffler another dose of perspective

Change Text Size

HOUSTON – There’s a Scottie Scheffler story from the old WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, where after both the 2021 and 2022 events, Scheffler and his wife Meredith had a big dinner with friends in Austin, Texas, his college town.

The 2021 dinner followed a runner-up finish, as Scheffler lost to Billy Horschel in the final match. The next year, it was to celebrate a victory. From the joyful tone at dinner, though, the difference was indecipherable.

This anecdote, first shared on the “Golf. Life. Faith.” podcast, is instructive when evaluating Scheffler’s mentality, which will be a popular point of discussion into next week’s Masters Tournament, where the world’s No. 1 player will eye his second green jacket.

Scheffler finished runner-up to Stephan Jaeger on Sunday at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, missing a 5-footer on the final hole of regulation that would have forced a playoff at Memorial Park Golf Course – and extended his chances of a third consecutive TOUR title in as many starts. It wasn’t meant to be, as Scheffler’s birdie try burned the edge, but his performance in his adopted home state continued a multi-year run of form that has rivaled Tiger Woods at his statistical peak, with the accompanying results.

Behind the scenes with Scottie Scheffler after PLAYERS win

Scheffler earned his first TOUR title at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, and that was just the precipice. He has recorded 21 top-three finishes on TOUR since that win – no other TOUR player has recorded more than 10 in that span – and he has added seven more TOUR titles, including the 2022 Masters. He leads the TOUR this season in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green by a wide margin (he averages 2.798 strokes gained per round, nearly a stroke more than No. 2 Xander Schauffele at 1.817.) Last season, Scheffler gained 2.615 strokes per round, nearly seven-tenths of a stroke more than No. 2 Rory McIlroy.

Scheffler, 27, is blessed with incredible talent, only matched by a natural work ethic that allows him to find joy in the process. Practice sessions are fun for him and always have been, dating back to his childhood days when he’d beg his dad for a ride to the range on ice-cold winter days in Montvale, New Jersey, and then at Royal Oaks in Dallas after the Scheffler family moved to Texas.

These tales have been well-told through Scheffler’s rise from acclaimed junior player to college player to Korn Ferry Tour player to PGA TOUR player to PGA TOUR superstar. They’re also a clue as to his sustained form.

Scheffler isn’t driven by the results; he’s driven by the process, having said as recently as last week that his home life hasn’t been changed much by success in professional golf. He’s as fiery as ever inside the ropes – there was a club slam after his second shot found the water on the par-4 16th Friday at Memorial Park – but that demeanor shifts quickly once he exits the arena. After each round last week, he lit up when saying hi to Meredith and friends, offering a smile and his trademark exuberant wave upon recognition.

Following Sunday’s narrow runner-up finish, Scheffler met the media at an interview area adjacent to the player parking lot. It was a mentally taxing week on the course – the central narrative, whether could he become the first to win three straight TOUR starts since 2017, came oh-so-close to fruition – and he had a frictionless exit ramp if he chose to take it. But he returned to the front of the clubhouse, signing for fans and engaging in lighthearted banter with them. That wasn’t for show; it was because he wanted to, and the playful conversational tone suggested that he had already mentally detached from the tournament’s outcome.

“Winning is fun, but it only lasts a few seconds or a few minutes,” he said in Houston. “It's funny, it seems like you think my life would have changed a lot, but it really only has changed out here (on TOUR). At home, it hasn't changed that much. That will change significantly in the next month when our baby comes, that'll be the big change. But at home, no. We still have the same friends, still have a great support system.”

Not only does Scheffler love the game, he’s in love with the game – he appeared happy as a clam in the minutes before his final-round tee time in Houston, carrying a large-sized bucket of range balls and testing himself in different ways: bump-and-run pitch shots, bunker shots, short-sided pitches over the bunker. No entourage nearby, not even caddie Ted Scott (who was close at hand if needed), just Scheffler, a wedge and some practice balls.

That practice served him well as he hit a series of crafty pitches to stay in the mix Sunday – including one from short-right of the par-5 third green, starting on a line 20 feet right of the flag and bumping it off the slope; the ball rolled to 6 feet and he drained the birdie putt.

Scottie Scheffler chips it tight to set up birdie at Houston Open

These types of shots will come in handy at Augusta National, as Memorial Park was a worthy precursor – minimal rough, tightly mown areas around the green that allow for creative short-game decision-making. Scheffler ranked a pedestrian 26th for the week in Strokes Gained: Around-the-Green – down comparatively from his No. 4 ranking this season – but his short game kept him in it down the stretch Sunday, making crafty up-and-downs for par on Nos. 10 and 12 before ultimately finishing one back of his playing partner Jaeger, who made nine consecutive closing pars.

Scheffler would have preferred a victory in the Lone Star State, of course – a stroke-play TOUR title in his adopted home state continues to elude him – but he’ll arrive at Augusta National as the oddsmakers’ clear favorite, and deservingly so. He’ll take this week off before heading to the land of the loblolly pines.

Scheffler’s form is as good as ever, and he knows the Masters will end the same regardless of the outcome – with a goofy wave to his family. Therein lies intangible power.
