How to Spend the Perfect One Day in La Jolla Itinerary

A gorgeous area by the sea, La Jolla is a wonderful place to visit. This upscale area in San Diego is well worth a visit, especially if you’re visiting San Diego already. There are lots of activities from hiking to shopping to snorkeling. What should you do if you only have one day in La Jolla ? Keep reading for the perfect itinerary for visiting La Jolla.

La Jolla is known for its rugged coastline and perfect weather—with an average temperature of 70.5 °F (21.4 °C). It’s home to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and award- winning culinary creations. La Jolla is also the gateway to the Torrey Pines State Reserve, a great place for lovers of the outdoors.

When to Visit La Jolla

With great weather year-round (La Jolla has 266 sunny days a year), I’m not sure you can go wrong with this. However, there is a higher chance of rain and cooler temperatures from November through March.

Generally, July through to October has weather you can count on when the days are longer and the sun is almost always shining. It’s usually in the 70s and 80s during the day and the 60s at night.

The closest airport is the San Diego International Airport, which is about 25 minutes away, depending on traffic. If you drive, you can take the 5 (I-5) north, and the same goes for coming from downtown San Diego.

If you’re driving from the north, you’ll take I-5 South, and if you’re coming from the east, you can take I-8 W to I-5 N. If you need to rent a car, check car rental comparison prices here in advance.

Another option is the 30 bus from any bus stop in downtown San Diego, Old Town, or North County. Get off the bus at the Silverado and Herschel stop in downtown La Jolla. From there you can walk to the restaurants and shops on Girard and Prospect and to La Jolla Cove.

La Jolla has many great options for hotels, though a lot of them are a bit pricey and so you’ll want to stay somewhere else in San Diego if you’re looking for a more budget accommodation (interesting fact: the average price for a home in La Jolla is among the highest in the US).

If you want a 5-star experience for your stay in La Jolla, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a 5-star hotel just south of La Jolla. This hotel is just a hundred yards from the ocean and features an outdoor pool and full-service spa.

Another good option is Pantai Inn , a 4-star hotel with a Balinese theme. It’s right next to the beach, and the rooms are truly luxurious with amenities such as a fireplace in the room.

Inn by the Sea at La Jolla is a great 3-star option. It’s close to the beach and has beautiful views of the sunset. It also has a heated pool and fitness center. It’s right next to a lot of shops, restaurants, and bars.

One Day in La Jolla suggested itinerary

Here’s how I recommend you spend one day in La Jolla!

Start your day with a delicious breakfast. There are so many places to choose from, so I’ll narrow it down for you. Caroline’s Seaside Café has an excellent view, sitting on the cliff above La Jolla Shores Beach. It has lots of healthy choices, and all of it is organic and from sustainable sources.

Or you can try Brockton Villa. Housed in one of the area’s original cottages, Brockton Villa is known for its Coast Toast, which is brioche French toast soaked in cream, and they have lots of other delicious options.

Next, you’ll want to get out to the water. You have some options for this: going to the beach, kayaking, or snorkeling (or a combination).

We chose snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, which of the two places we snorkeled was definitely the better option. There were lots of people on the little beach and lots of seals and sea lions too!

They aren’t afraid to lay out on the beach or swim right next to you in the water! The lifeguards were warning people not to get too close though.

We saw lots of little fish in the cove. At first, we thought the water wasn’t clear enough that day, but then we realized we swam out too far. There are lots of fish not too far from the beach! Sometimes you can see rays or leopard sharks, but we didn’t see any.

We just rented snorkeling gear and asked around for the best spots, but you can book a snorkeling tour. Alternatively, you can book a snorkeling and kayaking tour like this one or just a kayaking tour of the 7 caves like this one.

If you don’t want to snorkel, you can simply enjoy the beach at La Jolla Cove. It is a bit small, so if it’s too crowded you can head over to the larger La Jolla Shores Beach. We also snorkeled at La Jolla Shores, but we didn’t see much there. Another option is to book a surfing lesson like this one.

After some fun in the sun, head back in for some lunch. We ate at Duke’s La Jolla, which is also a good dinner option. We hadn’t changed out of our wet suits, and they were kind enough to let us sit on the patio (which overlooks the ocean, so a win-win in my opinion).

Duke’s serves Hawaiian-inspired dishes, and everything we tried was great. We started with the Crab Wontons, had the Ribs & Chicken Plate for the main course, and finished it off with the Hula Pie, which we loved!

I’ve also heard that The Cheese Shop is a great spot to grab a gourmet sandwich and its famous oatmeal cookies. The shop has been around since 1972, and it’s conveniently located by La Jolla Shores Beach.

After lunch, you can go back to the beach for some more fun and relaxation, or you can change it up.

Wandering around the town is a great way to get to know La Jolla at a more local level. If you prefer to explore together with a local guide, then you can book a guided tour like this one.

After exploring the town, it’s time for shopping. La Jolla, unsurprisingly, has some of the best shopping in San Diego. You can find everything from darling boutiques to sophisticated brands.

The bulk of shopping is found in downtown La Jolla, also called the Village of La Jolla. Make sure you check out these stores while you’re there:

  Balboa Candy: for those with a sweet tooth

  Geppetto’s: a toy store that’s been part of San Diego’s traditions for 40 years

  Warwick’s: founded in 1896, this is the nation’s oldest continuously operating family- owned bookstore

Check when the sun sets, because you’ll want to make sure you can see it. And it’s a great time to take pictures as well. Scripps Pier, Ellen Browning Scripps Park, and La Jolla Cove are all great places for pictures at sunset.

You may also be able to see the sunset from wherever you eat dinner. For dinner, you might try Puesto La Jolla, after all, you have to have some fish tacos while you’re in San Diego. Puesto is a popular spot for unique artisanal takes on tacos, bowls, and salads made to order.

Some favorites include chicken al pastor and Baja fish tacos. If you’re looking for fine dining, head to The Marine Room, which is right on the sand of La Jolla Shores Beach.

This restaurant brings surf and sophistication together, serving seafood with a French spin. If you’re there at high tide, you’ll feel as if you’re on the water as you look out at the ocean through their big windows.

NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar is another great option with a farm-to-table menu. The restaurant is inside the Grande Colonial hotel. Some of their most popular dishes include short ribs, Jamaican jerk chicken, and half-baked chocolate cake.

The rest of the night is yours. You can continue wandering around downtown La Jolla, head back to your hotel to soak in the hot tub, have drinks at a bar like Hennessey’s Tavern, go to a nightclub like Onyx Room Nightclub, or enjoy a late-night comedy show at The Comedy Store.

Whatever you choose, relish that fresh ocean air one last time before you head home.

With that said, here are the best things to do in one day in La Jolla. 

1. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

Occupying 2,000 acres of land, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve sits off North Torrey Pines Road. Despite such a close location to the popular neighborhood of San Diego, the area remains one of the most unspoiled places on the Southern California coast.

Miles of pristine beaches rim the reserve, providing safe haven for migrating seabirds and other wildlife. The locals pride themselves on this unspoiled paradise. To them, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is associated with virgin California, a place that had existed before early settlers arrived.

TIP: Remember, though, the naughty waves can’t help but “embrace” the locals as well as the day-visitors of La Jolla from time to time. Thus, you might want to keep closer to the cliff when the surf is high.

4. Sunny Jim Sea Cave

Sheltered by the towering cliffs and guarded by the powerful Pacific Ocean, the Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave is one of the legendary hidden gems of San Diego . Indeed, the place does’t like excessive attention, unveiling its presence to the most resourceful day visitors of La Jolla.

The secluded cave has allured the locals and travelers for over a century. Accessible only by boat or through a tunnel running from The Cave Store , it first attracted attention in 1902. Gustav Schultz, a German artist and entrepreneur, hired two Chinese laborers to dig a tunnel that would connect his house (now the store) with the cave. They also say, the small cavern was used for bootlegging during Prohibition. 

No illegal trading happens in in the cave when the sun goes down nowadays. Instead, the secluded area entertains the locals as well as the rare visitors who are fortunate enough to learn about the place prior to their day trip to La Jolla.

Spend One Day in La Jolla: Tunnel to Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave

The connecting tunnel has become an enticing landmark on its own. Still accessible from the former house of Gustav Schultz, it descends via a narrow staircase to the enchanting cave. The original 145 steps remain intact, allowing for a convenient 5-minute journey to the seaside. 

Such a secret location mostly reserves the Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave to the use of the locals. The visitors, especially those who spend just one day in La Jolla, often have no clue about its existence. New regulations at the store further prevent from the spontaneous visits to the cave.

To check out the cave at any time, you should plan to visit La Jolla sometime during the day on Tuesday or Thursday. During these so-called walk-in days, the tunnel is open to the public from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm. Self-guided tours costs $10 for adults, $6 for children (3-17).

Once in the cave, you can spend as much time as you need. Usually, the visitors linger inside for 15-20 minutes. Occasionally, photographers get down the tunnel and spend nearly half a day by La Jolla’s seaside, photographing away the churning waters and flying seagulls.

Reservations are required to explore the La Jolla’s most intriguing cave and tunnel during any other day of the week.  

Update: As of 2022, no reservations are needed. Furthermore, the tunnel is open for visits daily, from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm.

5. Shell Beach 

La Jolla’s coastline is packed with the small, picturesque beaches, such as Shell Beach . Accessible via a concrete staircase, the sandy stretch sits right at the bottom of the cliff that houses Ellen Browning Scrips Park .

The name of the beach is rather literal. Tiny shells accumulate on the golden sand, giving plenty of natural “toys” to play with for the kids. Moreover, the young “marine biologists” keep themselves busy exploring tiny creatures that abound in tide pools on the beach.

The sandstone bluffs shelter the area on both sides. Yet it doesn’t protect Shell Beach from massive waves that splash on the sand, submerging almost half of the beach at high tide. While you can still enjoy the leisurely walks by the water any time of the year, the locals prefer to get down to the beach only at low tide.

6. La Jolla Coast Walk Trail 

Are you fond of long walks by the ocean? La Jolla offers an activity that can occupy the whole day. Spanning the entire shoreline, the Coast Walk Trail unveils all the pristine beaches, towering cliffs, and abundant marine life of the upscale Village. The trail temporarily stretches along the sandy beaches before it climbs onto the bluff near La Jolla Cove Beach , never descending back to the water afterward.

The majority of the day visitors as well as the locals succumb to the indisputable natural beauty of the trail, spending from a couple of hours to half a day by the ocean. 8. Children’s Pool Beach

We made a few day trips to La Jolla over the past few years. While our places of interest changed depending on the time of the year, Children’s Pool always toped our itineraries.

Sitting just south of Ellen Browning Scripps Park , the area has nothing to do with the kids. Instead of the active, young beachgoers, the place accommodates a large colony of awkward seals. Packing the short stretch of sandy land like sardines in a tin can, the mammals soak up the warm sun all year round. 

Originally, the Children’s Pool was intended to provide a secluded location for the local kids to splash in the ocean water. A concrete breakwater wall was erected in 1931 to protect the kids from the incoming waves.

Yet the young beachgoers didn’t enjoy the place for a long time. Tempted by the calm waters, the seals moved in, permanently claiming the territory. To make their point, the mammals rarely if ever vacant the beach.

You can admire the marine animals all day long from the towering bluffs in La Jolla. For a close-up look, walk out along the seawall. Beware of the high waves, though. Splashing over the concrete barrier, they unsuccessfully aim at filling up the beach. Swimming during seal pupping season, however, is no longer allowed at the Children’s Pool .

9. Windansea Beach

You can spend a day in La Jolla testing its cold ocean waters on Windansea Beach . Located a short walk from the Children’s Pool area, the place is famous first of all for its surf shack . The old structure sits right on the beach, creating a dreamy backdrop for sunset photography. 

Windansee is a short word for “ Wind-and-Sea ”. The beach owes its name to a hotel with the same name. Sadly, the hotel burned down in the 1940s. Nothing reminds of its existence but the catchy name. 

The secluded beach survived, though, becoming a perfect spot to spend a warm day in La Jolla. Known for its high waves, the place is especially popular with the surfers. Swimming, however, can be challenging here. This drawback forces the majority of the beachgoers to stick only to strolling and sunbathing on the beach.

10. San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park 

La Jolla is a paradise for scuba divers. Brimmed with the marine animals and different habitats, the area suits experienced and beginner divers alike. For many visitors of La Jolla, the underwater world fills the whole day without leaving time for any other activities.

If you are one of these ocean devotees, be sure to explore the deep waters of the San Diego-La Jolla Underwater Park . Spanning 6,000 acres of ocean floor and adjacent beaches, the place enhances your day visit with an array of marine species and incredible underwater terrain.

The area comprises the Ecological Reserve and the Marine Life Refuge and includes 4 distinct habitats: kelp bad, reefs, sand floats, and submarine canyon. The park was created in 1970. Two artificial reefs were added to its territory to attract the marine animals. While the area might be out of reach for some of the day visitors of La Jolla, the divers always come back for more.

11. Torrey Pines Golf Course

Golf lovers usually devote an entire day to tossing balls into loops at Torrey Pines Golf Course . Founded in 1957, the place boasts two professional 18-hole full courses.

Although it’s enticing, perfecting your swing on the bluff above the Pacific Ocean comes with a hefty price. The La Jolla’s visitors usually shell out more than $200 for a day at this superb golf club. Playing here on weekends and holidays comes with a higher price.

12. Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier

Relatively fewer visitors skip the main beaches to spend a day near the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier , located just south of La Jolla Shores . A popular oceanography research site, it was built in 1916. The Pier never intended to impress neither the visitors nor the locals of La Jolla. Instead, it focused solely on study, research, and a variety of experiments.

Yet one of the largest active research piers in the world didn’t escape the distorting force of time. Luckily in 1988, it went though a major reconstruction that enabled it to carry on its scientific work.

On top of the underwater research, the pier serves as a boat launch today. Small vessels go off both side of the pier to catch food for inhabitants of Birch Aquarium at Scripps and collect data near the shore. 

Despite its enticing finds, the Scripps Pier welcomes only scientists and oceanographers. The public is not allowed to visit, moreover spend a day on the pier. Yet the beach on the both sides of the structure is free and open to all beachgoers.

Bursting into colors in the evening, the place is especially popular with the photographers that use the long concrete structure as a main object for their sunset photography.

13. La Jolla Village

Quintessential La Jolla Village provides a break from all beach-related activities. From shopping to dining and enjoying its epic wellness centers, the area keeps reminding why La Jolla is considered one of the most luxurious neighborhoods of San Diego. 

Continuing with the prevailing trend, walkable La Jolla Village enables its day visitors to explore most of the sites, waterfront restaurants, and trendy boutiques on foot. The place also boasts a few movie theaters that allow for a short escape from the dreamy scenery to cinematic world.

The day visitors with children, however, might need to look for more kid-friendly places. Loaded with sweet goodies for all tastes and buds, Balboa Candy comes especially in handy. While you might long for exclusive dishes and ocean terraces, your young travelers will surely declare this store the highlight of their day in La Jolla.

The top-notch restaurants won’t make you wait for long, either. Located just a minute away, eye-caching La Plaza La Jolla invites you to have a feast on its rooftop patio. Popular restaurant George’s at the Cove is another great option to savor flavorful dishes with a jaw-dropping view. 

14. La Jolla Murals

Spend the rest of the day discovering eccentric La Jolla’s murals. Often, this activity takes the whole day, so plan your visit accordingly.

The idea of bringing art to masses dates back to 2010. A number of local artists were commissioned to bring their works to the streets. Shortly after that, the first murals adorned private properties throughout La Jolla. New masterpieces joined the collection a few years later. The goal of this unconventional mission was to make artwork accessible to larger audiences at all times.

While going down to the water is out of question here, you can spend an hour or so admiring the big mammals and making friends with the local seagulls.
• For more seals and sea lions, walk along the bluff to La Jolla Cove . It’s a perfect place to finally get down to the beach, spread your towel on the sand, or swim in the cool ocean. Filled up with the tiny creatures transported here by the strong waves, the abundant tide pools allow you and your kids spend half a day examining La Jolla marine life up close. 
• The coastal area, brimmed with small sea caves and rocks of irregular shapes, also allures photographers who use soft morning light to their advantage. For sunrise at the beach, you might want to get here a couple of hours earlier. 

One Day in La Jolla: Afternoon Itinerary

• 12 pm. Have a picnic with the view at Ellen Browning Scripps Park . Located just above La Jolla Cove, it offers plenty of the green spaces to enjoy the second meal of the day. Spread your blanket and take in the gorgeous views or check out the tent-shops of the local vendors.  
• As an alternative, head to Don Carlos Taco Shop and load up on hearty burritos. The place offers a variety of dishes, ranging from classic bean burritos to build-your-own-meal options. Vegan customers can’t stop raving about their soyrizo burritos.
• 1 pm. Reserve the rest of the day to exploring La Jolla Village . Start with the secluded Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave and slowly take your party onto the streets of the Village. Shop at the posh boutiques or collect some gifts from the small shops decorated in ocean themes. The visitors who don’t mind to walk a lot might want to devote the rest of the day to finding the famous murals scattered throughout La Jolla. 

Alternative Afternoon in La Jolla Itinerary 

• The nature enthusiasts can spend the rest of the day further enjoying the enormous treasures that coastal La Jolla has to offer. Go to the Torrey Pines and see how long you can walk before returning back to the Village for dinner.

Helpful Tips for Spending One Day in La Jolla

Ditch the car.

I love spending a day in La Jolla. What I don’t like about it is looking for parking. Parking lots as well as streets fill up quickly, especially on weekends. We found it’s best to use paid day parking and explore La Jolla on foot. Use User if you must visit the farthest corners of the area after you “abandon” your car for the day. It won’t break the bank but saves you plenty of time and energy.

Find Parking

If you still prefer to drive around La Jolla, look for free spots on Coast Boulevard or near Prospect Street . Drive around until a spot opens up. 

Wear Comfortable Shoes

You will spend a good part of the day visiting some of the popular and lesser-known places in La Jolla on foot. A comfortable pair of shoes is non-negotiable here.

Bring Towel and Clothes to Change

The untamed waves don’t spare anybody, including those who don’t plan to swim or surf. Thus, bring extra clothes and a small towel unless you plan to spend the whole day shopping, dining, and doing other “safe” activities in the Village of La Jolla.

Apply Sunscreen

La Jolla nestles in the southern corner of California where sun shines brightly most of the year. Take care of your skin and be sure to use sunscreen all day long when in La Jolla.

Go on a Kayak Adventure

La Jolla is one of the state's best places to go kayaking due to the large variety of trips you can take and all the cool stuff you might see from playful sea lions popping up out of the kelp forest to towering craggy cliffs and their eerie sea caves. Everyday California , an adventure tour company, offers a sea caves tour suitable for almost everyone over the age of 5 all year long as well as a combo snorkel-and-kayak tour. They also offer a truly special whale watching trip seasonally. Watch the gray whales make their way from the Arctic to Mexico (usually December 1 to March 1). You can get close in a non-threatening, non-polluting way. The company also offers surfing lessons, SUP rentals, and snorkel excursions.

See a Sea Cave (While Staying Dry)

If you prefer to stay dry but are thrilled by the prospect of spelunking in a sea cave, you're not out of luck. Hidden beneath an unassuming jewelry and gift store is a suspected bootleggers tunnel that cuts down through La Jolla Cove's sandstone cliffs and ends in Sunny Jim's Cave. The Cave Store was originally the home of Gustav Schultz, a mining engineer and entrepreneur who hired two Chinese laborers to dig out the tunnel in 1902. Legend has it a large amount of opium and alcohol came into San Diego via the sea cave during the Prohibition Era. Self-guided tours are offered daily and require visitors to climb 144 steps each way.

Conceived in 2010 to bring vitality and creativity to the community, Murals of La Jolla commissions massive works in a variety of mediums to fill predetermined walls of varying shapes and sizes on public buildings throughout the city by visionaries like Mark Bradford, John Baldessari, Catherine Opie, Kota Ezawa, and Beatriz Milhazes. The first two by Kim MacConnel and Roy McMakin are permanent, but subsequent pieces have been attached to billboard-like frames so that the art can be rotated out. Each one is on view for a minimum of two years. The best part is that this activity is open 24/7 and can be done on foot or by car or bike, during an afternoon jog, or piecemeal throughout your stay.

Find Nemo, Seahorses, and Other Marine Life at Birch Aquarium

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego has maintained an aquarium and science museum for more than a century and the current colorful iteration sits atop of coastal bluff looking out at the very ocean that provides most of its exhibits. More than 60 habitats and tanks—some touchable like the outdoor tide pool—are filled with cold water creatures from the Pacific Northwest, flashy tropical swimmers that hail from Mexico, and plenty of fish, sharks, and invertebrates that live in between them. The collection emphasizes the school’s conservation efforts and research on climate, ocean science, and biology. The impressive Seadragons & Seahorses exhibit alone is worth the price of admission. 

Dive Further Into Sea Science on the Scripps Pier

One of the most useful research tools at Scripps researcher's disposal is the 104-year-old Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier —which because of delicate scientific instruments and ongoing research projects housed there, is usually closed to the public. However, one Saturday morning a month, free tours of the campus include an educational stroll on the dock. The rank and file can also parade around one of the world’s most active research piers in the world by booking a full-moon tour. It usually focuses on bioluminescent organisms and hands-on activities like the plankton collection.

The picturesque coastal cliffs of Torrey Pines, just north of the downtown Village, boast some of the best and most consistent flying conditions on Earth, which is why the area has played an important part in aviation history. Charles Lindbergh took his 1930 maiden voyage here, in the 1960s, the first radio-controlled model airplanes were designed and flown here, and in the '70s it bought into the new extreme sports of hang-gliding and paragliding big time.

If you dare, you can take flight or take lessons to someday soar on your own seven days a week. Or you can try a fledging endeavor— parahawking , in which you fly like an eagle in an unmotorized ultra-light aircraft alongside a trained free-flying falcon. If all of that sounds for the birds to you, stay grounded with a hike through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve , which looks a little like Bryce Canyon at the beach. It's especially gorgeous in spring when blanketed by wildflowers. Or get a different kind of thrill by strolling along Black’s Beach, one of the largest clothing-optional stretches of sand in the nation and one of the best beaches of San Diego list .

Swim With Leopard Sharks

The shallow sandy flats off La Jolla's shores are a favorite spot for leopard sharks. There are always some swimming and looking for lunch, but the numbers grow between March and October when the timid, tiny-toothed predators start gathering in mass for breeding season. By late summer and early fall, there can be thousands of them and as they mean no harm to humans, it's a cool opportunity to strap on a snorkel and observe the sharks living their best lives.

Bike & Kayak Tours will get you geared up and guide you to a good viewing spot. (Also cool: they'll let you keep the snorkel stuff after the hour tour if you want to keep swimming with sharks.) If you have the equipment, nothing is stopping you from heading out on your own. If sharks have more backbone than you, you can stay above them on a kayak tour. Either way, go on a sunny day with calm water for the best visibility.

Catch a Show at a Tony-Winning Playhouse

Founded in 1947 by Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire, and Mel Ferrer, the La Jolla Playhouse attracted the biggest stars of the era like Groucho Marx and Eve Arden. After a decade, it lost its luster and shuttered until 1983. The Playhouse's second act, which includes a Tony win for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1993, has been quite productive. It has a knack for developing new works that find their way to Broadway including "Big River," "The Who’s Tommy," "Jersey Boys," and "Come From Away." Its Page To Stage New Play Development Program also birthed the Pulitzer Prize-winning "I Am My Own Wife." The Playhouse also hosts a biennial Without Walls (WOW) festival that brings interactive theater into unconventional settings like the backseat of a car or on a basketball court.

And that isn't the only show space in town. The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center , which opened in 2019, is made up of four distinct concert spaces and is the permanent home of the La Jolla Music Society.

Tour Modern Architectural Landmark

Jonas Salk—the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants and then the first person in his family to go to college—became an epidemiology pioneer when he invented the polio vaccine. In the 1960s, he founded the Salk Institute in Torrey Pines to foster further research on diseases, genetics, neuroscience, immunology, aging, and more. To inspire bold and creative problem solving, Salk hired Louis I. Kahn to design the now iconic and controversial laboratories.

Visitors can see the concrete and teak marvel, as well as its spectacular ocean and sky views, on a guided tour. They are offered Monday through Friday with advance reservations. 

Eat Tacos, Seafood, and Excellent Bread

There's so much good food on offer in La Jolla that you could spend the whole trip eating. (Which is never a bad way to spend a vacation.) Like much of California, there are several options for high-quality Mexican food. Puesto , operated by a set of first-gen brothers and cousins, are known for their Mexico City-style tacos served on non-GMO heirloom Masienda blue corn tortillas with fresh-made salsas. Galaxy Taco is another great casual choice for spicy nibbles.

With its proximity to the water and San Diego's intrepid fleet of fishing crews, seafood is always a safe bet whether you get it in sushi form ( Blue Ocean ), as a burrito or sammie ( El Pescador Fish Market ), or in a fancy fine dining setting like the old-school Marine Room . Make sure your reservation for this splurge dinner line up with high tides. A pre-code, pre-regulation build means your surf and turf might come with a show as waves regularly crash against the glass windows.

Beach towns are often brunch towns and La Jolla is no exception. Try Harry's Coffee Shop , a traditional diner with a fab counter, or The Cottage . Years later, we still occasionally dream of the lemon ricotta pancakes and fruit- and mascarpone-stuffed French toast. Grab specialty coffees at Pannikin and pastries, especially croissants, at Wayfarer Bread .

Sun and Sip at the Pink Lady's Pool

The beach is fantastic, but the beach doesn't have bubbles. However, as the consummate host, The Pink Lady (aka La Valencia Hotel) never runs out of Champagne, especially Veuve Clicquot, and provides so many lavish settings in which to enjoy it, including the hand-painted and high-ceilinged lobby bar, a table at the boozy brunch series, or from the balcony of a recently redesigned oceanview room.

But perhaps the ultimate place to sip is in the sun on the red-tiled pool deck. Surrounded by swaying palms and vibrant bougainvillea, the chaises provide prime sunset viewing over the Pacific as well. And for the first time since the rose-hued landmark opened to luxury lovers in 1926, it's available to non-guests for daily use through Resort Pass.

Itinerary for a Perfect Day at La Jolla Cove

La Jolla, California is famous for its mouthwatering brunches, gorgeous views, the Birch Aquarium, and, of course, its beautiful beaches. And one of the most recognizable is definitely La Jolla Cove! It’s beautiful, safe for children, great for snorkeling, and one of the few places you can truly see the local sea lions in action. Instead of coming for just an hour or two, why not make a day out of it? We’ve put together an itinerary for a fun, carefree way to do just that .

Enjoy a delicious breakfast — with a view.

To fuel up for an exciting day, we recommend grabbing a great meal and cup of coffee at  Harry’s Coffee Shop . This is a beloved local gem that’s been a family-owned business for more than fifty years, since its founding in 1960. Soak in the friendly, local atmosphere as you tuck into waffles (our favorite), eggs, or fluffy French Toast. You can even grab a cheeseburger, if that’s what you crave at 7am; they’re served all day!

Head to La Jolla Cove to watch the sea lions.

Seals and sea lions are highly intelligent animals that are naturally curious and playful. From the sidewalk above the cliffs at La Jolla Cove, you have a great vantage point of the sunbathing  seals and sea lions . If you want a bit more up-close-and-personal view, head down onto the sandy beach via the staircase to the left.

The seals and sea lions are a protected species, and it is important to observe them from a safe distance to avoid disturbing them.

One of the best places to watch them is from the overlook at the Children’s Pool, a small beach that was originally built as a protected swimming area for children. Today, the beach is primarily used by seals and sea lions, who can often be seen sunbathing and swimming in the clear waters.

Watching the seals and sea lions in La Jolla Cove is a peaceful and relaxing activity that can be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. It’s a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat and to gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the ocean and its inhabitants.

While you’re there, look for a series of small  sea caves , which make for great photo ops!

Take a La Jolla kayak tour.

The Cove is a picturesque destination with abundant natural beauty that makes it one of the most sought-after kayaking destinations in Southern California. Kayaking is an exciting and refreshing way to explore the coastal marine life, including seals, sea lions, and dolphins. You can also admire the stunning rock formations, steep cliffs, and rugged coastline that make up the La Jolla shoreline.

Kayaking tours in La Jolla are usually guided, and experienced guides can take you to some of the most iconic spots, such as the Seven Sea Caves, where you can paddle through a series of caverns carved out by the sea. Head up the steps and onto the green of one of La Jolla’s best parks, the Ellen Browning Scripps Park. It’s a lovely place to play frisbee, fly a kite, and shake the sand from your toes; or just to throw down a blanket and check out the gorgeous panoramas (including the seals and sea lions down below).

From here, it’s an easy stroll to your next destinations within the downtown Village!

Take a break for lunch.

Downtown La Jolla Village offers some great restaurant options. Take in your midday meal at a casual spot like El Pescador Fish Market or The Cottage (beloved by locals for their fabulous brunch and lunch options), or head to an upscale venue with a patio for people-watching like NINE-TEN Restaurant inside the Grande Colonial Hotel.

Take a stroll along the Historic Coast Walk.

In our opinion, no visit to La Jolla is complete without a stroll along the beautiful Historic Coast Walk Trail!  The trail  begins at The Cave Store (where you can venture down to Sunny Jim Cave before you walk), and takes you along the bluffs over to  La Jolla Shores .

While you’re at The Shores, you can rent equipment from a local spot and go kayaking, standup paddle boarding, or snorkeling.

Enjoy Happy Hour by the sea.

Coming back after your exhilarating stroll, a refreshing drink may sound like the very best thing! There are some amazing  happy hours  to choose from in La Jolla; whether you’re in the mood for drinks with a view (we love Catania) or you want something a little cozier and more quiet.

Locals’ tip:  For something a bit more tucked-away, try the We Olive & Wine Bar! They have a terrific patio in back with an ocean view; it’s rarely crowded, and makes for a relaxing spot to enjoy a glass of wine while you watch the sun set.

Stroll the art galleries or tour the eclectic Murals of La Jolla.

After sipping a glass of wine or a martini, enjoy the downtown Village art scene as the sun goes down. La Jolla is an art lover’s paradise! Walk the numerous  art galleries  along Girard Avenue or Prospect Street, or take a walk and discover all the  hidden murals  throughout La Jolla. There are now about two dozen of them scattered throughout the Village; many of which are tucked away in small corners and on the sides of buildings. On certain days of the month, The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library offers free guided tours — be sure to check it out!

If you’re looking for more public outdoor art, check out The Stuart Collection at MCSASD La Jolla. Although the museum is temporarily closed for a new exhibit installation, the gardens are open and free to the public — and make for a great sunset-watching spot!

Grab some dinner.

The beauty of dining here is the variety! To dine with a view, check out Duke’s La Jolla and  George’s at the Cove . Both of them are waterfront and have gorgeous views of the coast! Mix things up with a dinner from Spice & Rice Thai kitchen, known for their delicious Thai entrees or enjoy a fine Italian meal at Piazza 1909.

End the day with some comedy.

The Comedy Store , which has been hosting well-known comedians since its opening in 1977, is a great place to sit, relax and let yourself be entertained after a long day. We recommend checking it out and booking tickets ahead of time. It’s a wonderful way to end a great day, and some pretty famous comedians have come through here over the years — including Jim Carey, Bill Hicks, Whitney Cummings, and countless others.

Spend the night in a luxurious hotel.

A day spent in La Jolla, just a 20-minute drive north of downtown San Diego, will include beautiful views of the shoreline and ocean and rugged cliffs. You can be out in nature and enjoy many activities both on land and in the water. La Jolla also offers elegant restaurants and little cafes, along with upscale shopping and art museums. There’s even a world-class research aquarium. So, whether you spend your time inside or out, you are sure to make treasured memories.

Things To Do In La Jolla

Hit the beach.

La Jolla hugs the Pacific Coast and features 10 beautiful beaches. Some are quite small, but the main recreational beach, La Jolla Shores , is a mile long and fairly wide. Head here to splash in the water, build sandcastles, play volleyball, and sit on the sand. The lifeguard stations are staffed, and the waves tend to be gentle. One of my favorite ways to spend time here is to walk along the sand to the picturesque pier. With such a long beach, you can stroll for quite a while.

Not a fan of sand? La Jolla Shores also offers a grassy park for picnics and lawn games. This area is located between the parking lots and the beach.

Another fun way to enjoy La Jolla Shores is to have a bonfire. Several pits are located on the sand. You will need to plan ahead and reserve one by sitting by it around midday in the summer and on weekends. When night falls, you can build a roaring fire, visit with your friends, and listen to the waves crashing in the darkness. It’s magical.

Pro Tip: The two parking lots are large, but they do fill quickly, especially in the summer. Street parking is limited. Plan to go early to get a spot. You’ll find small markets and takeout food on the side streets, so you can comfortably stay as long as you’d like.

See The Sea Lions At La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is a small beach with a different feel from La Jolla Shores. It’s a sheltered spread of sand surrounded by cliffs. If you enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving, La Jolla Cove is a good choice, because the water is part of a marine reserve.

Serious swimmers come here to race out to buoys placed 0.25 mile and .5 mile from the shore. Others swim the 3 miles to the pier and back.

La Jolla Cove is also home to sea lions who love to sun themselves on the rocks just offshore. You can easily walk to the nearby Children’s Pool, where some sea lions live. A cement walkway allows you to view the marine life from above to avoid bothering them.

Explore The Tide Pools

Tide pooling is exploring marine life left behind by waves in the cracks and crevices of rock formations along the shore. It’s fun for all ages and can keep the little ones in your group occupied for hours. And La Jolla is one of the best areas for tide pools anywhere along San Diego’s coast.

You’ll find nooks and crannies to explore in many places in La Jolla. My favorite area is at the Ellen Browning Scripps Park along Coast Boulevard. Find a parking spot on the street and walk along the lawn down toward the shore. Look for rocks with pools of standing water in them.

Obviously, you will need to aim for low tide. Check the tide charts to plan your time at the tide pools. And take a jacket even in the summer, since you may be in cool ocean air. The nearby University of California San Diego has an excellent guide to marine life in the local tide pools. Enhance your visit by reading it before you go.

Visit The Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium sits high on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. While it serves as a marine research center, it’s open to the public and will enchant you with its tanks of colorful sea life. You’ll learn about the latest discoveries being made by ocean scientists. Interactive exhibits geared toward youngsters make this a place for visitors of all ages.

The Preuss Tide Pool Plaza outside the aquarium allows a hands-on experience with sea stars, hermit crabs, sea cucumbers, lobsters, and sea anemones.

The Birch Aquarium is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. If you happen to be in town on one of the rare rainy days in La Jolla, you can still enjoy the mystique of the ocean during your time inside.

Hike In The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is an area of beach and cliffs at the north end of La Jolla. If you’re looking for hiking with a view, this is the place to go. Trails along the hilltop wind through fragile, lacy cliffs, and the terrain is dotted by scrubby Torrey pines. These trees are found only here and one other place and were named after a botanist’s friend in the 1800s. The soil is sandy so close to the water, but somehow these trees hang on. With their distinctive bent silhouettes, they helped guide those at sea to the shoreline before lighthouses were built.

The real attraction of a hike here is the view of the sea. Take any of the paths starting at the top of the hill — they all lead toward the water. You can hike for a half hour or several hours, taking one easy path or some of the more demanding options. You can also access the beach down below by a set of steep stairs.

Before you go, take a look at the six main trail options online and plan your time. Due to the extent of erosion, some of the trails may be closed. Trails extend north and south of Torrey Pines, so if you’re up for a longer hike, you can map out those options.

Pro Tip: You’ll first encounter large parking lots at the beach level. Drive to the top of the Torrey Pines trails if you want to skip the hike up the steep, wide road. Ample parking is usually available in the lots across from the trail access points.

Go Kayaking Or Snorkeling

Are you interested in water activities? You will find many fun ways to enjoy the ocean in La Jolla. You can rent kayaks at La Jolla Shores and paddle out as part of a tour or on your own to explore caves carved out of the sandstone, the biggest and easiest to reach being Clam Cave. Be aware of the tides so that you don’t get surprised by the water coming in.

Snorkeling along the shore is also popular. You’ll discover a wide variety of sea life. One of the main attractions for snorkelers is the thousands of leopard sharks that migrate through La Jolla from June through December seeking warmer waters.

You can rent both snorkels and kayaks , and you can combine your rental to use both on the same day.

Stop By The Museums And Art Galleries

If you’re in search of arts and culture, La Jolla is a great place to experience museums and galleries. Downtown offers the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego , the Map and Atlas Museum of La Jolla , the La Jolla Historical Society , and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library .

Art galleries in La Jolla include the Madison Gallery and the Thumbprint Gallery . The author known as Dr. Seuss, whose real name was Ted Geisel, lived in La Jolla, and you can view the artwork of this local celebrity at the Legends Gallery .

Best Restaurants In La Jolla

You’ll find many types of cuisine in La Jolla. Specialties include seafood and Mexican dishes. Many of the restaurants come with a panoramic view of the ocean, too. Here are a few of my favorites.

The Cottage

For breakfast, you can’t top The Cottage , a bustling restaurant located in a historic house downtown. Munch on fresh scones or cinnamon French toast as you relax on the patio under colorful umbrellas. The Cottage also has a new wellness menu that includes vegan and vegetarian dishes.

Caroline’s Seaside Cafe

Climb the stairs above a university meeting hall, and you’ll be on the deck of Caroline’s Seaside Cafe . The ocean and pier will be at your feet as you enjoy breakfast or lunch at this informal outdoor cafe. Sandwiches such as the Caprese, Avocado, and Curried Chicken Salad are favorites.

The Marine Room

The draw here is that giant waves crash against the bay windows as you dine. And the food is gourmet. While pricey, The Marine Room is not only a restaurant, but also an experience. A handy tide chart on the website will help you plan to catch the highest waves. Reserve in advance to secure a table during peak times.

Crab Catcher

This restaurant is a good middle-ground option between informal and expensive dining. The Crab Catcher occupies a corner in downtown and features views of the nearby water. The menu focuses on locally caught seafood, and the specialty is red king crab legs.

George’s At The Cove

Another elegant La Jolla landmark, George’s at the Cove offers visitors the chance to dine out on the Ocean Terrace overlooking the Pacific. If you want to grab a drink instead of a meal, try the elevated bar at George’s and take in the same fabulous view.

Where To Shop In La Jolla

Downtown La Jolla hugs the shore and then moves inland several blocks. Look for Girard and Prospect on a map, and you’ll find it. This area is known for boutique shops and high-end stores such as Cartier. You can always stick to window shopping to spare your budget. Lots of cafes and ice cream places are here, too, in case you need a break. La Jolla provides a handy list of the best places to shop in the area.

Best Hotels In La Jolla

You can find chain hotels such as Hilton in La Jolla, or you can easily stay in downtown San Diego and spend the day in La Jolla. If you want to stay in La Jolla, here are two of my favorite unique hotels.

The Lodge At Torrey Pines

This hotel majors in luxury. Located at the edge of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, The Lodge at Torrey Pines is inviting, with its dark wood accents and comfortable furnishings. A fine-dining restaurant is on-site, and the property overlooks the Pacific. What more could you ask for?

La Valencia Hotel

This elegant hotel is in the heart of downtown La Jolla. La Valencia has occupied this prime real estate since it opened in 1926. Views of the ocean come with what the hotel perfectly describes as “Hollywood glamour on the California Riviera.” With its Mediterranean architecture and hand-painted murals, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the 1920s.

If you are in search of outdoor fun on the water, sunbathing on the beach, science and marine life at the aquarium, or fresh seafood — or maybe all of those — you will savor your day in beautiful La Jolla.

Well, then you’re thinking about La Jolla! Some call it a village, others just call it a neighborhood of San Jose, but no matter how you look at it, coming here is the right move to make. Even if you have just one day in La Jolla, you will be able to enjoy it immensely. As always, we are here to show you how – here’s the best itinerary for visiting this great place!

What’s the best time to visit La Jolla, California?

The dry season in La Jolla starts in April and ends in October, so many would say this is the best time to visit. And although the temperatures remain quite reasonable during this period, they have been known to soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (40 Celsius), so you may want to keep that in mind. Winters are very mild here, which makes La Jolla an excellent choice if you want to spend this part of the year somewhere warm.

As for the events, golf is big in La Jolla, and the PGA Tour comes to town every January or February. La Jolla Art &Wine Festival in October and the Music Society SummerFest in August are also very much worth visiting, plus it goes without saying that every major holiday brings its own events around here.

A few facts about La Jolla

As mentioned, La Jolla is officially a part of the city of San Diego, and with a population of about 45,000 people, it’s not exactly a metropolis.

However, you will find that the average price for a home here is among the highest, if not the very highest in the whole of the United States.

Furthermore, Black’s Beach is the very first beach to be officially deemed a nude beach. On top of that, it is also the largest beach for nudists in the entire country, but surfers adore it too as it is one of the best surfing spots in California.

The place was also recognized as a perfect getaway spot very early on because La Jolla was an art colony way back in 1894. You will find that this is not very surprising as soon as you come here. There’s just such a great vibe here!

Due to its fantastic beaches, luxurious shops and restaurants, and incredible mansions, La Jolla is sometimes also referred to as the Riviera of California. A very suitable nickname, that’s for sure.

One day in La Jolla is more than enough to become mesmerized by this place. However, because there is so much to see, do and enjoy, you may miss some of the main sights if you don’t have everything planned out. Luckily, we have a detailed itinerary all set up for you, so just follow these steps to enjoy La Jolla to the fullest during your visit. Here’s what you really need to check out!

Start with a nice La Jolla breakfast

Get an early start to your one day in La Jolla and treat yourself to a nice breakfast. Not only will this be a great start to your day, but it will also allow you to get a feel of this place and explore it a bit. Places like Richard Walker’s Pancake House , The Cottage , or Cody’s La Jolla come highly recommended and will help set the tone for the rest of your visit.

Hit one of the beaches

Beaches in La Jolla will probably be one of the main reasons why you’re visiting, and they’re pretty much all great places to enjoy the sun and the ocean. La Jolla Shores offers plenty of activities for everyone (from scuba-diving and paddle-boarding to snorkeling and even parties in the evening) and a separate part just for surfers, Black’s Beach is the most famous nudist beach around, La Jolla Cove is ideal for snorkeling, etc.

These are just some of the options you have, but you can always count on the beaches being very safe and clean. And if you wish, you will be able to find a place with much fewer people and just enjoy the nature.

See the sea lions

One La Jolla beach, however, stands out from the rest, and that’s Children’s Pool Beach . The reason why it’s so different is that many seals and sea lions come here to rest, which presents an incredible opportunity to observe these wonderful animals up close. You will also find plenty of restaurants nearby, so this could also be a great opportunity to stop for lunch after you meet the sea lions.

A word of caution, though – these animals can sometimes smell quite bad!

Pick out a nice place for lunch

Need help choosing the place where you’ll sit down for lunch? Well, what kind of food would you like? Eddie V’s Prime Seafood and Herringbone La Jolla are both fantastic places for seafood dishes, and Manhattan of La Jolla is an excellent choice for something Italian in a more elegant setting (even live jazz can be found here).

Duke’s La Jolla offers dishes inspired by the Hawaiian tradition, but there are also your regular bistros and taco places where you can come in for a quick bite. In short, no matter what you’re craving, you should be able to find a restaurant for that quite easily.

Visit the Museum of Contemporary Art

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is present at two locations in the city, and one of them is La Jolla. Given that this community has a long and rich artistic tradition (it was an art colony at the end of the 19th century), this wonderful institution fits perfectly into it.

With almost 5000 pieces of contemporary art, the museum should really find itself on anybody’s itinerary, and among the most interesting collections is Pop Art from the 1960s and 1970s. However, you can also explore how conceptual art has changed over the decades, enjoy art from Latin America, and discover many fascinating and thought-provoking pieces. A must for art lovers!

Feel a real adrenaline rush

If you have the time and want to spice up your day in La Jolla, hop on over to Torrey Pines. It’s just north of La Jolla and provides visitors with plenty of activities they can enjoy. Plus, there’s a nice beach over there, too.

But the most important place there is the Torrey Pines Gliderport where you can try everything from para-gliders to glider planes. You can get lessons there on the spot if you’re not experienced at this sort of thing, or you can simply watch others fly. Oh, and water-powered jetpacks are also available if you want something that will keep you closer to the ground (i.e. surface of the water). All in all, loads of fun and excitement!

Go see a musical

Why not end your day in La Jolla with a musical? It’s certainly a great idea for a date night. And La Jolla Playhouse is the perfect venue! This world-renowned theater has made a name for itself by creating amazing musicals, and this was also recognized by numerous Tony awards they’ve won over the years.

Plays are also excellent here, so do check out what’s on while you’re here, and you could be in for a wonderful evening. Trust us, it will be well worth it!

In short, a great choice if you want to be able to explore and stay close to your room.

Day trips from La Jolla

One day in La Jolla is just what the doctor ordered for anyone who needs a time-out from everyday life, but if you can stay a bit more, why not organize a day trip or two? There are plenty of excellent options close by – after all, this is California. Here’s what we suggest!

This is a no-brainer, really. Seeing how La Jolla is a part of San Diego, spending one day in San Diego exploring it can be extremely fun. There are loads of things to do and enjoy, plus the city really comes alive in the evening. All in all, this can be a great day out, and you never have to travel very far.

Whale watching

If you love animals, this is something that will leave you speechless. The ocean in front of San Diego is a part of the migration route of all kinds of whales, and you can get close to them and observe these majestic animals. So, book a trip and get ready for something very special.

Now, Julian is an exceptionally charming little town that was founded during the Gold Rush. Today, however, it is full of quaint shops and restaurants, wonderfully restored houses, and horse carriages showing tourists the most important places. Oh, and they make AMAZING apple pies here. This day trip from La Jolla is a trip back in time but in the best possible way.

Joshua Tree National Park

While this national park is about two and a half hours away, it is also an amazing day trip that will show you just how amazing nature can be. There will be plenty of opportunities for amazing photos, but you can also visit the interesting little town over there. An outdoorsy day trip that will provide everyone with plenty of interesting stuff to do.

Extra tips for visiting La Jolla

• La Jolla is actually a very children-friendly place, so if you’re coming here with the whole family, you’ll love all the kid-friendly restaurants, playgrounds, etc. You can relax because your kids will be perfectly safe on the beaches, too.
• finding a parking space could be a problem. It’s often better to just go for a walk than to spend precious time looking for a place where you can leave your car.
• sunscreen can be very handy to have. This is the very south of California, after all. Take care of your skin!
• you don’t have to worry about the dress code here. Most people are very relaxed, and you will see all sorts of combinations as you’re walking the streets.

My husband and I lived in San Diego suburb of Escondido and La Jolla was in our backyard for weekend adventures. We’ve visited the coastal city of La Jolla more times than I can count, and I’ve built this weekend guide from all of our personal experiences and favorite local hangout spots.

In this guide you will find the best La Jolla beaches for shoreside picnics and swimming, the best places to eat, shopping destinations, where to stay and more. We’ve also included both adult and kid-friendly things to do in La Jolla.

The Best Time of Year to Visit La Jolla

The beauty of San Diego is that there’s never really a bad time to visit, because they are known for having year-round pleasant weather. Because La Jolla is right on the coast, it generally stays much cooler than the inland areas of Southern California.

During all twelve months of the year, the La Jolla temperatures average between the mid 60’s to mid 70’s. August will have the hottest days of the year, so if you really want to swim in the ocean, that’s your best bet. There’s also many days in La Jolla with hazy and overcast skies, which comes with the territory of being right next to the ocean waters. The Vibe of La Jolla

For those who have never been to La Jolla, allow me to set the scene. This portion of San Diego is reserved for families with children and older generation adults. The streets, buildings and neighborhoods are pristine and very well-maintained. It has a more mature and cultured look and feel, making it ideal for quiet and sensible activities.

In short, La Jolla is not a place to party and be boisterous. If you’re planning a bachelorette party, dirty 30 birthday , or any kind of event where you’ll be drinking and looking for nightlife, I suggest staying closer to Pacific Beach, Mission Beach or North Park .

Best Beaches in La Jolla

Most people book their La Jolla vacation with plans of spending relaxing days at the beach. Below you’ll find a list of the best beaches for laying out on the sand, swimming in the ocean and cliff views.

La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is probably the single most popular beach in La Jolla. This is where you’ll find those bright turquoise blue waters which are very rare in California. The water is very shallow near the shore and this is a popular place for swimming. The beach is very easy to access, with multiple staircases leading you down to the sand.

Visitors should be aware that this beach does get very crowded on warm and sunny days, and the sandy beach stretch is fairly small because it’s surrounded by a rocky cove. There are many hotels within walking distance to La Jolla Cove, eliminating the hassle of trying to find parking.

La Jolla Shores

While La Jolla Cove is a small beach, La Jolla Shores on the other hand is a very large beach that spans over a mile. The beach shore is covered in beautiful white sand and there’s plenty of space to spread out for a big picnic. The waves tend to be very calm and you can feel comfortable dipping your toes in the water.

Scripps Pier Beach

Scripps Pier Beach is a bit of a hidden gem because it’s less touristy. This beach sits under the grand Scripps Pier which creates a lot of shade and atmosphere. This beach tends to be a bit calmer, and during the week its mostly just surfers catching waves. This is also a popular place for San Diego themed Instagram photos because the pier really captures a vibe.

Pro Tip: You’ll have to park in the streets up on the hill because there’s limited parking at the beach entrance.

Visit the Seals at Children's Pool in La Jolla

During our trips to La Jolla we often pay the famous seals a visit. Fun fact about the name of this popular beach spot, back in the 1930's the sea wall was built to create a safe swimming pool for children. Over the years the seals took over the cove as it made a prefect protected breeding spot.

Puesto Tacos

As you can see in the photos below, the tacos at Puesto are so fresh and delish. Located in the heart of downtown La Jolla, this favorite Mexican taco joint serves up an inventive menu with savory cuisine gems such as zuchinni and cactus tacos. The interiors are very colorful and lively.

La Jolla can be very expensive and if you’re looking for an easy way to save some cash, head to Puesto for their Taco Tuesday and Happy Hour specials.

George's at the Cove

George’s at the Cove has been voted the best restaurant in San Diego multiple times by local publications and foodie critics. They serve modern California cuisine with seafood, lots of fresh produce and meat entrees. The bar also makes cocktails and serves wine. They are best known for sweeping views of the La Jolla coast from their Ocean Terrace. This place is a bit on the pricier side, so best to save this for a date with a significant other.

The Cottage

The Cottage is the perfect breakfast or brunch spot while you’re on vacation. They have been voted best patio dinning in La Jolla 4 years in a row, so you know it’s gotta be good. They only serve breakfast, brunch and lunch so make sure to arrive before 3pm. Their menu has brunch classics like pancakes, French toast, omelets and Benedicts. They also have a kids menu so families can feel comfortable bringing their children.

This swanky spot boasts stunning interior design and California coastal cuisine and fine meats. Which means you’ll find plenty of seafood on the menu, alongside free-range chicken and grass-fed beef. This is certainly the type of place you want to go for a foodie splurge and top-notch ambiance.

Urban Plates

Urban Plates is a trendy and modern Southern California restaurant chain. They serve healthy meals cafeteria-style and you can fill up your tray with all kinds of delicious bites. You can pick a main meals and add-on savory side dishes, soups, kids meals, drinks and dessert.

If you’re looking for healthy and organic plant-based cuisine, El Avocado is a very cute cafe with a vegan and vegetarian menu. They are located right in the heart of downtown La Jolla and you can see ocean views from their front patio. We stopped here one day to get gelato treats after an afternoon exploring.

Scripps Pier Beach.

Nine-Ten is another fancy schmancy place to enjoy a meal in La Jolla. This Michelin-approved restaurant serves all three meals of the day (and brunch too!). The cuisine is elevated seafood and meat dishes. I would say this spot caters to a more mature crowd, so this could be a great place to brunch with your parents.

Stroll through downtown la jolla.

Your visit to La Jolla wouldn’t be complete without a leisurely walk through downtown. The best starting point to the cross section of Prospect Street and Girard Ave. Window shop trendy boutiques and popular clothing brands, grab a coffee or ice cream and then head down to see the seals. The Children's Pool is a short walk from the center of downtown La Jolla.

We took our kids to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla on a lovely fall afternoon. Although this is a smaller aquarium, it still had plenty to see and keep the kids entertained for a couple hours. Our favorites were the seahorses, jellyfish and the hands-on tide pools exhibit where the kids can touch real-life marine life. The ocean views from the outdoor terrace are especially scenic.

Sunny Jim Sea Cave

The Sunny Jim’s cave is on my La Jolla bucket list of places I haven’t seen yet. This is the only La Jolla cave that is accessible by land via a tunnel leading down from the historical landmark, the Cave Store. When my kids are a little older I can’t wait to explore this really cool tunnel.

The Shops at La Jolla Village

When I was pregnant with my daughter, my OB doctor’s office was right across the street from The Shops at La Jolla. I would often stop for lunch at Mendocino Farms or a cupcake from Sprinkles. More noteworthy restaurants and shops inside this open air shopping center are Snooze AM Eatery, Sephora , Philz Coffee and Rubios.

If you’re looking to do some serious shopping during your La Jolla vacation, then you’ll want to hit up the huge Westfield mall. This mall is super fancy and premium, but still has those cool brands we love such as Free People , Allbirds , Anthropologie , H&M , Lululemon , Madewell , Reformation and Sephora . There’s also a movie theater and a skating rink at the Westfield in La Jolla.

Torrey Pines State Reserve

La Jolla is filled with natural beauty and the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is at the top of the list of outdoor recreation. This enormous 2,000 acre park is located right on the coastline. You can take hikes with ocean views, and photographers can capture incredible natural landscape photos.

The seaside town of La Jolla is located in San Diego and is most well-known for its beautiful ocean views, delicious brunch spots and multi-million dollar homes. Whether you’re local to San Diego, or looking for your next day trip itinerary – we got you covered! Keep reading for our completely day trip to La Jolla, CA.

Jump start your morning with coffee & pastries at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry

Start your morning in the neighborhood of Bird Rock with a pastry and coffee from Wayfarer . Note: you may find yourself ordering one of everything topped with a couple baguettes. There’s no shame in loading up!

I always opt for the classic plain croissant (you’ll thank me later) and a latte to go. From there, walk towards the water – there are plenty of benches to sit and enjoy your snack!

My personal favorite spots are Calumet Park and False Point which are both within a 5-10 minute walk from Wayfarer.

Have breakfast at Harry’s Coffee Shop

Harry’s Coffee Shop, located in the downtown is a local institution. The diner, which has been family owned for over 50 years, is the perfect no-frills spot for the fluffiest french toast.

Looking for something a little more *aesthetic* or closer to the water? Consider Sugar & Scribe , The Cottage or Cody’s .

Head to La Jolla Cove and visit the Seals

From breakfast, your next stop should be to check out the seals at The Cove. There’s a reasonable stretch of ocean-front sidewalk that you can follow to walk off breakfast! There are plenty of smaller patches of beach or pockets to sit and admire the view.

Take a tour of the Sunny Jim Cave

This historic cave is known for being a smugglers’ tunnel during the Prohibition. Taking the tour is the only way to view the cool tunnel from land (otherwise you need to go rent a kayak). For more facts on the cave, check out this article . Tickets to visit are $10 for adults and $7 for children. You can make your reservation here .

Pro Tip: After your cave tour, head to the right towards the trees. There is a beautiful lesser known walking path.

Walk around Downtown La Jolla and explore the shops and murals.

If you have time, walk around downtown and pop into the little shops along Girard Ave. There are also various murals throughout the area that you can check out. For the extensive list of rotating murals, visit the Murals of La Jolla website.

My personal favorite is the Favorite Color Mural located at 7596 Eads Avenue.

Enjoy the view of San Diego from the Mount Soledad Cross

Next, drive up the mountain to enjoy the view from the Mount Soledad Cross that was built in 1954. It is arguably the best lookout point of the city and is also home to the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial.

Lunch at Barbarella Restaurant & Bar

For lunch, enjoy Italian food at Barbarella’s in the La Jolla Shores neighborhood. Their cozy space is perfect for lunch or date night. Honestly you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu but the pasta with vongole and the chop salad are my favorites.

Walk to the Pier at La Jolla Shores

End your day with a walk along the beach. You can actually walk all the way to the Scripps Pier from the La Jolla Shores Beach. Hint: it makes for great photos as well!

Three Days In La Jolla Itinerary

For the past three years I’ve had the honor of serving on the Global Influencer Advisory Board for Visit California where we meet yearly to go over trends happening in the travel space. Our adventures are like no other, and let me tell you the level of play each and everyone brings to these trips are absolutely priceless.

Where To Stay

The hub for my trip was the beautiful Lodge at Torrey Pines . This beautiful resort exudes classic craftsman charm and overlooks the world-renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course and the majestic Pacific Ocean. The grounds and architecture immediately caught my eye when I arrived, and the interior was just as impressive! Its charming design and decor are both welcoming and luxurious, promising a relaxing stay from the moment I stepped into the lobby. They have a beautiful view of the La Jolla Shores beach for sunny days. With top attractions like the golf course, it’s a popular place to stay int he coastal city. A children’s pool beach is always something I look for in a stay with my family.

After check-in we headed down to Torrey Pines State Beach for a sunset welcome meeting. Pop Up Picnic Co set up a beautiful scene and lots of appetizers, so it was an hour of snacking and laughing. And let me just say we wound up catching the best sunset too!

That afternoon after a full morning of meetings, we headed to the WNDR Museum . This interactive museum is more of an experience than a classic museum. It’s a multi-sensory dive into the arts and technology. While there, we could fully engage with the artworks and multi-sensory installations. They were created by the cutting-edge artists, collectives, technologists, designers, and makers who contribute to the museum and its experience. The museum believes that everyone is an artist – even its visitors. That approach really showed through while we were there.

After dinner, we headed to The Gutter, Lafayette Hotel’s iconic game room featuring classic, two-lane bowling inspired by Henry Frick’s personal bowling alley at the base of the Frick Museum. We bowled a few frames, had a few more drinks, laughed too much, and generally had an amazing time.

The next day was our last, and we made sure to make it count as much as the previous two days. We headed out early to the San Diego Zoo for an exclusive experience. I was incredibly excited because I love zoos and the work that the San Diego Zoo , in particular, does for wildlife. They’re an international, nonprofit conservation organization that integrates wildlife health and care, science, and education into their zoo to help educate the public and develop sustainable conservation solutions to our world’s problems.

After our zoo experience, we headed to San Diego Speedboat Adventure to get our blood pumping. The cruise took us zipping along the coastline in a speedboat. It combines speed and beautiful views to create a unique boat tour experience. Between bouts of speeding along the coast, we saw seals, other wildlife, and views of the Maritime Museum, Seaport Village, and the downtown skyline.

After our tour, we headed to the iconic Mediterranean restaurant Callie for a cocktail reception and dinner. While there, we enjoyed amazing cocktails and cuisine that combines the many flavors of the Mediterranean, from Italy to the Middle East, into interesting and delicious dishes. I’ve never had anything like it.

Finally, we ended the day at the beautiful Raised by Wolves cocktail bar. Walking into this speakeasy with a hidden door is like walking into the past. Old-world decor and golden, shining oak are in full view no matter where you look, and the entire vibe is one that feels so warm and welcoming. We enjoyed a few cocktails. Soaking up the vibe and the conversation before heading back to the resort for our final night. As I lay in bed, I was fully aware that the next morning, I’d be heading home. I departed the next day, and although the trip is over, I’m already making plans for another as soon as possible.

Enhance La Jolla deemed not responsible in trip-and-fall lawsuit

Enhance La Jolla has been deemed not responsible in connection with a lawsuit over a trip-and-fall incident in The Village, according to Chairman Ed Witt.

The suit was filed against the city of San Diego in June 2022 for an undisclosed amount after a person walking along Silverado Street reportedly tripped on raised decorative pavers in September 2021.

The city passed the claim to Enhance La Jolla’s insurance carrier, arguing that Enhance La Jolla should have identified and “barricaded” the hazards with caution tape and/or cones and notified the city.

“I was informed the other day that … that one has been settled” and that Enhance La Jolla was deemed not responsible, Witt said at the group’s April 18 meeting. “So that is really good news.”

Enhance La Jolla is a nonprofit that manages the Maintenance Assessment District in The Village with authority to enhance services provided by the city, including landscape maintenance, street and sidewalk cleaning, litter and graffiti abatement and additional trash collection. It also can privately fund and complete projects in public spaces, such as park and trash can upgrades, bench installation, sign augmentation, public art and tree canopies on main thoroughfares.

An additional lawsuit was filed against the city Sept. 29 by La Jolla resident Ann Kerr, a former president of the La Jolla Town Council, a board member of the La Jolla Community Center and president of the La Jolla Christmas Parade.

She alleged that in June 2022 she was injured when she tripped and fell on a cracked and uneven portion of sidewalk on Ivanhoe Avenue.

That suit, which the city also passed to Enhance La Jolla’s insurance carrier, remains unsettled.

An earlier lawsuit filed against the city in April 2022 stated that in January 2020, a resident was walking along Pearl Street when she tripped in an empty tree well, fell and hit her face on the sidewalk.

That case was settled for $40,000, and Enhance La Jolla’s insurance paid for it after the city passed it along.

Enhance La Jolla argued it should not have been involved in any of the lawsuits because it was not named as a defendant in any of them and should not bear responsibility.

Kerr told the La Jolla Light last year that she never intended for Enhance La Jolla to be involved in her suit.

But the San Diego city attorney’s office said the group had signed a four-year contract with the city in 2019 in which it “agreed to regularly maintain all sidewalks consistent with [a] City Council policy and to barricade all sidewalk safety hazards and to notify the city.”

Witt told the Light that the location cited in Kerr’s lawsuit was reported to the city via its Get It Done app in 2017 and “the city did nothing” to repair it.

A new contract with the city dated July 1 last year “takes away the liability of the MAD for trip-and-fall issues on sidewalks,” Witt said. “We are no longer responsible for things we haven’t done. ... If we did something to create a hazard, we would then be responsible.”

Though Kerr’s lawsuit was filed after the new contract took effect, the old contract was in effect when the incident occurred.

Other Enhance La Jolla news

Donations: Enhance La Jolla is making headway on some of its projects, thanks in part to recent donations.

Witt said $13,000 worth of donations have been collected so far this year.

Enhance La Jolla’s ongoing projects include the replacement of hanging flower baskets along Girard Avenue.

“The hanging flower baskets have been a huge project for us,” Witt said. “We have pretty much completed [installation on] Girard from Prospect Street to Torrey Pines Road. We buy the pots, flowers, hangers [and] brackets and [volunteers] carry out the labor.

“We still have four pots on order that will be installed on Prospect Street. … I hope the public and the board agree the pots look really nice.”

The group maintains more than 70 baskets in the MAD. “They aren’t all perfect, but they will be by the time we are done with the whole project,” Witt said.

To help out, board member Ann Dynes recently donated $5,000 after fielding a complaint from an optician on Silverado Street.

“[The optician] pointed to one of the baskets and said … ‘What is Enhance La Jolla doing about that?’ So I feel some ownership of the baskets,” Dynes said with a laugh.

Representatives of the La Jolla Garden Club have given repeat $1,000 donations to Enhance La Jolla for the flower basket project. The most recent was given during the April 18 meeting.

Another project is to tend to benches throughout The Village by installing armrests in the middle and refurbishing memorial benches.

Enhance La Jolla board member Peter Wagner recently donated $2,000 for more armrests on benches throughout The Village.

In addition, the La Jolla Town Foundation, one of the original shepherds of the memorial bench program, donated $5,186 to clean and re-stain the benches.

Witt said new memorial plaques will not be installed, “but we want to improve the benches where we can. … So when we are cleaning the sidewalk, all the benches that are wood are power-washed and we will come back, sand it and stain it. So the benches that are in tough shape will be looking a whole lot better in the very near future.”

18th Annual La Jolla Concours d'Elegance Returns to Town With Vintage Cars

The 18th Annual La Jolla Concours d’Elegance returns to San Diego Friday, kicking off with a VIP dinner party in La Jolla at Ellen Browning Scripps Park at 6 p.m.

The annual event “celebrates the glamour and luxury of the Roaring ’20s and Glamorous ’30s with a schedule of must-attend events for automobile aficionados and casual enthusiasts alike,” a statement from the event organizers reads.

For the VIP dinner, themed “Expedition d’Elegance: The Road to Opulent Adventure,” attendees can listen to classic jazz, enjoy period- appropriate cocktails and gourmet bites.

However, Saturday is where the event really revs its engines, displaying a diverse array of automobiles, from vintage classics to modern marvels on an Italian Mille-style rally out on the open road.

Beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, the public is invited to join the “Cars & Coffee” Parade in Rancho Santa Fe on Paseo Delicias and at the La Jolla Shores Parade along Avenida de la Playa and Calle de la Playa from 11:30 to 11:45 am to catch a glimpse of these 100+ modern and vintage cars.

In the evening, Porsches on Prospect will showcase German engineering from 5 to 9 p.m. in the heart of La Jolla Village. A total of 75 magnificent vintage and modern Porsches will line Prospect Street, as the businesses offer deals, music and giveaways around them.

Finally on Sunday, the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance will begin at Ellen Browning Scripps Park, 1100 Coast Blvd. More than 200 rare vehicles will displayed on the La Jolla Cove lawn — from “classic muscle cars to the sleek lines of vintage European roadsters,” a statement reads.

Accoridng to the organizers, this year, the Concours will feature a 1932 Chrysler CP8, one of 5 surviving cars out of the 251 ever built, Jack Douglas’ 1955 Jaguar D-Type, and the “Most Famous Car in the World,” the Aston Martin DB5, best-known for its role in the James Bond films driven by 007 in the film “Goldfinger.”

Attendees can participate in a Champagne and Honey Tasting, enjoy live music, visit exclusive luxury vendors and sip on refreshing beers and cocktails.

Additionally, the free La Jolla Motor Car Classic at the Concours is taking place on the street adjacent to the La Jolla Concours d’Elegance.

San Diego’s accessibility shines in a tour by mobility scooter

Planning a trip to a new location is always exciting — especially to somewhere like San Diego, which is known for its beautiful weather, vibrant neighborhoods and countless things to do that cater to all kinds of interests.

That being said, if you’re traveling with any kind of disability there are a lot of things to consider when planning a trip, whether for work or play. I can say that from experience: I was born with a physical disability called cerebral palsy, which affects the way I walk, and I use a mobility scooter when traveling.

I absolutely love to travel and have never felt that my disability should hold me back from visiting new places or experiencing new things — and it shouldn’t hold you back, either! I’ve been to more than 10 countries outside the United States, and have visited dozens of cities domestically. Having had my fair share of positive and negative travel experiences with my mobility scooter, I’ve learned some things over the years that help each trip go a little more smoothly than the last. I also document my accessible-travel experiences on social media to help share resources with my followers or fellow disabled travelers, at @RealChelseaBear on Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. 

I had the privilege of visiting San Diego for the very first time in October 2023, and again in March 2024, and both trips were absolutely incredible! I can genuinely say that no matter what part of San Diego I was in, I was very impressed with its accessibility. Here are highlights of all the things I did while in San Diego, as well as recommendations and tips for planning a visit here while keeping accessibility in mind.

Discovering Balboa Park

My initial impression driving into Balboa Park for the first time was: WOW.   The buildings and monuments scattered throughout the park have extremely beautiful and intricate architecture which is so aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I was surprised to learn that the park is home to 18 museums, adding even more culture and character to the entire area. Plus, the gardens, large fountains, duck pond and overall landscaping were breathtaking. 

While at Balboa Park I went to the Mingei International Museum, which celebrates folk art from around the world. I learned a lot about folk art and viewed a lot of incredible exhibits. Right across the courtyard was The San Diego Museum of Art, which boasts an internationally renowned collection of more than 32,000 works, dating from 3000 B.C. to the present day.

Accessibility at each museum was seamless, with ramps and elevators available to help me get to each floor with my mobility scooter and enough space between the pieces of art where I never had issues with navigating around the showrooms. Beyond these two museums, there are many more throughout Balboa Park, all within a short walk or roll — including the San Diego Air & Space Museum , the San Diego Automotive Museum , the San Diego Model Railroad Museum , the Japanese Friendship Garden and Museum, and the Comic-Con Museum , to name a few. Most offer accessible tours, too!  If museums aren’t your interest, I still recommend stopping by Balboa Park at some point during your visit to San Diego. I went on three separate days and each day there were exciting things going on throughout the park, so I recommend visiting even if it’s just to walk or roll around the beautiful scenery. There are various food options, vendors selling jewelry and art, and street performers doing magic tricks or playing musical instruments. Plus, there’s a free concert every Sunday at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.

Parking is free and there are plenty of accessible parking spaces. 

If you love waterfront views …

… then San Diego is the place to be! One of my favorite areas by far was the Embarcadero , including Seaport Village. The waterfront area extends along San Diego Bay, is easily scootable, and has so many different things to do, see and eat. There are a lot of shops and restaurants, as well as local vendors and entertainment scattered throughout. 

Beyond the incredible views of the sailboats and yachts in the bay, I was extremely impressed with the area’s dedication to accessibility. 

Whenever I came across a couple of steps to get into an establishment, there was a sign with a disability icon and arrow pointing to the nearest ramp. Figuring out an accessible entrance is sometimes the biggest battle when traveling, so I was really grateful to see how San Diego prioritized signage and accessibility in this way. Bonus points, the waterfront is only a few blocks away from San Diego’s lively downtown and Gaslamp Quarter areas, making it really easy to get from one area to another without needing to figure out transportation. 

Something I really enjoyed doing along the Embarcadero was a Harbor Tour with Flagship Cruises & Events. They had a ramp so I could easily get on the boat with my mobility scooter, and there was a tour guide who shared history and interesting facts about the area – and we got to see a lot of seals! Full disclaimer, the ship did not have an elevator so I had to walk up a flight of stairs to get to the top platform. But there’s plenty of room and seating for you and your party to fully enjoy the tour on the first floor of the boat if you’re unable to do steps. 

You can also enjoy public art and sculptures, visit the USS Midway Museum or the Maritime Museum of San Diego , or catch a concert at the new outdoor bayfront concert venue, the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park along the Embarcadero. 

Accessible beaches await

You can’t visit San Diego without seeing the Pacific Ocean , right? Well, that was at least my mindset as an East Coast native. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. I stayed in the Mission Beach area for a few nights and saw one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. The sky was spewing neon pink, yellow and orange, and although I took dozens of photos, none did it justice. It’s just one of those sights you absolutely need to see in person! Not to be demanding but, add it to your bucket list. 

All jokes aside, it was really easy for me to roll along the boardwalks on my mobility scooter at Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores . There were plenty of shops, bars and restaurants that were level to the ground, so it was extremely easy for me to scoot inside, and the options for where I could go were not limited, which is something I usually run into in other cities. Both areas gave beach-town vibes but still had impressive accessibility features.

If you’d like to get onto the sand, San Diego offers free manual or power beach wheelchairs at nine popular beaches. Most of the wheelchairs are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, so I recommend calling in advance or getting to the beach early to ensure availability. Three beaches in San Diego also have sand access mats, which allow you to wheel out onto the beach to really soak in the views. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn about the adaptive activities offered in San Diego. I love a little adventure when I travel, and I had the amazing experience of going on a kayak tour of the Seven Caves with Bike and Kayak Tours Inc. in La Jolla . I’ve kayaked plenty of times before, being a Floridian, but to be fully transparent I was a little intimidated to be kayaking on the Pacific Ocean, since the waves are a little more rough than the ones I’m used to. I expressed my concerns to my tour guide and they quickly adapted, allowing me to switch from a single kayak to a double kayak, with one of the other tour guides joining me on the kayak. She made the entire experience comfortable for me, helping paddle to move us along through the tour and adjusting my seat to ensure I was supported. It was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. We saw leopard sharks through the crystal-clear waters, as well as different fish, sea turtles and harbor seals. The tour guide shared some unique facts about La Jolla Shores and the beautiful caves, and we even got to kayak inside one of the caves! The tour guides were extremely accommodating and assisted my sister in helping me navigate walking in the sand and getting in and out of the kayak as well. If you plan to go on this adventure, I recommend calling in advance to share your specific needs so they can plan accordingly before your arrival.

Living it up in the Gaslamp Quarter

I also stayed in the Gaslamp Quarter for a few nights, and it was a great central location with a lot of options only blocks apart. Accessibility-wise, the curb cuts on each corner were really smooth and easy to navigate on my mobility scooter. I was really impressed with how clean and clear the sidewalks were, too. It was really easy to get to different restaurants or entertainment options. I’m always a huge fan of walkable areas because they reduce the need to worry about transportation with a mobility scooter, so I definitely recommend this area.

With rows of restaurants and bars throughout Gaslamp Quarter, I was also delighted to see a strip of comedy clubs. I went to a comedy show at American Comedy Co. and it was a great venue. The main entrance to the theater had stairs, but they had an elevator available for me to get to the show easily. 

Something unique that I loved about this particular area was how the local MLB stadium, Petco Park , is located within the downtown area. Whether you’re catching a concert or cheering on the San Diego Padres , it’s an easily accessible venue to get to. 

Fantastic food options

Overall I was pleasantly surprised with the diverse and high-quality food scene in San Diego. One restaurant in particular, Callie , was one of the best meals I’ve had in years. The Mediterranean menu offered a variety of mouthwatering options, and the hummus was some of the best I’ve ever had.

Another great venue to check out is Liberty Public Market . Located right next to the Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens , which is an extensive brewery and restaurant with a delicious flight of IPAs, the public market had a lot of diverse and authentic food options to enjoy. I splurged a bit while there because there were too many good choices to choose from! I had handcrafted lobster ravioli from Pasta Design, a delicious bowl of ramen from Slurp Taiyaki & Ramen, and authentic Argentinian empanadas from Parana Empanadas. My only regret is that I didn’t get to try something from every vendor!

Try an Old Town Trolley Tour

If you’re looking for one activity that can give you a full overview of all that San Diego has to offer, the hop-on/hop-off Old Town Trolley Tours of San Diego is the way to go. Each trolley vehicle has an accessible lift for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and you can leisurely explore the 11 stops during the tour. It brings you through Old Town , the Embarcadero, the Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy , and Balboa Park. It’s an easy way to get around and sample many different areas of San Diego.

If you’ve been needing a sign to book a trip to San Diego, let this be it! As someone with a physical disability, it’s hard to come by destinations that are so accommodating and with so much to offer.
