TOUR GUERNSEY (St Peter Port) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

‘REAL Guernsey Tour’ + cruise

Our first stop during a May 2018 cruise around the British Isles was St. Peter Port on Guernsey. Online, we had booked a tour there with Tour Guernsey (Barnabe Ltd., Market St., St. Peter Port, Guernsey, England, GY1 1HB, U.K.; phone +44 778 1423 616, www.tourguernsey.com ) , whom we recommend enthusiastically.

Guide/driver Andy Taylor operated a Land Rover that had been modified into a safari-type vehicle with raised seats and open sides. (It had plastic covers and blankets, if needed.) The vehicle accommodated up to 12 passengers, but there were only six on our tour.

The 3-hour "REAL Guernsey Tour" covered the roads and lanes of Guernsey far better than a bus could. In addition, Andy was an excellent guide, full of interesting info about his island.

We think that this tour, priced at £55 (near $72) per person, was the best way to discover Guernsey.

As for the 12-night "British Isles" cruise aboard the MS Royal Princess of Princess Cruises (800/774-6237, princess.com ) , May 13-25, we had been attracted by the itinerary — Guernsey, three ports in Ireland and three in Scotland plus Le Havre, France — and the bargain price of $2,400 per person, double occupancy, including air from Atlanta, Georgia.

As it turned out, however, we felt that 3,600 passengers were too many for this cruise. The delays caused by long lines in boarding and disembarking, especially at the two tender ports, tended to offset the comfortable balcony cabin, excellent service and good food.

Guernsey Taxi Tours/ Mike Mauger (Silver Accredited Guide)

Mike is a locally born accredited tour guide and full licenced "private hire" operator and has been awarded the "TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence" for 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.

His tours offer an ideal opportunity to see the whole island in the comfort of a saloon car (four passengers), at a leisurely pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop, get out and take photos. Mike has an extensive knowledge of the island’s history and gives a narrative throughout.

Standard Tour (approx 2.5 hours)  This tour takes in the southern half of the island, with stops at view points over St Peter Port, the stunning south coast cliffs, and the beautiful bays along the west coast. You will also stop at the Little Chapel, a German Second World War fortification and a dolmen (passage grave circa 1500BC). You will pass Victor Hugo's house, Napoleonic fortifications and much more. During the tour you will travel through Guernsey's narrow country lanes (which are too small for the tour coaches) and hopefully see a herd of the famous Guernsey cow.

Full Tour (approx 3.5 hours) 

This tour continues from the Popular Tour but completes the circuit around the island.

You can be collected from any location at a time that suits you. It is advisable to book in advance.

Bespoke Tour Tours can be arranged to suit your personal interests (WW2-Megalithic-Potato Peel etc.) Visits to the Occupation Museum and Underground Hospital can also be included

Cruise passengers are seeking more exclusive experiences with a local touch and a personal feel – something Guernsey’s landscape and people can provide in abundance. The islands’ natural environment provides the perfect location for visitors to get involved in smaller-scale experiences with local food and drink at the forefront of these trends.

VisitGuernsey’s accredited guides and experience providers lead guests on various food and drink experiences in the islands. For example, they can join walking tours that offer opportunities to taste produce from local ‘hedge veg’ honesty stalls and hands-on sessions to forage for natural delicacies including seaweed, which was a staple food item during the occupation of Guernsey in World War II. More luxurious dining is also on offer, including exclusive wine and cheese tastings or fresh seafood and wine pairing experiences with a sea view.

In addition, guests can taste local gin, ale or cider while exploring the local farms and orchards, or they can take a 20-minute ferry to the peaceful, car-less island of Herm for the regular Ale and Cider Festival.

Cruise passengers can participate in multiple other events in Guernsey. Parish farmers’ markets are held in all seasons and there is often an opportunity to meander around the artisan markets at the St Peter Port Seafront Sundays, where local producers and craftspeople showcase their products in the alfresco, waterside location.

While the historic town is in strolling distance of the tender dock, passengers can also use unique transfer services to reach other exclusive experiences and tours in the island.

Nature lovers can take a private charter boat to spot the coastal wildlife, which includes dolphins and seals. Alternatively, cruise guests can drive down winding rural lanes (or ‘ruettes tranquilles’) in Tour Guernsey’s Land Rover or travel around the coastline in a private tuk-tuk.

Guernsey Land Rover Tour

Very informative, not too bumpy and very pleasant tour around the lanes and the different areas of Guernsey that cannot be accessed by car. It was helped by the fact that we had a lovely sunny day , but the vehicle had plastic sides that could be pulled down if necessary.

An amazing trip around rural Guernsey. Ant the driver gave us a sedate Land Rover Cruise through villages and lanes that no other vehicle other than a bike could go. His local knowledge and love for his island added to the trip, the converted land rover was an amazing vehicle to see this beautiful peaceful part of the world. Thanks, hope to tour again. We had a fabulous day with Ant in his Tour Guernsey jeep, he knows everything there is to know about the island, he took us right up into rural Guernsey and off the beaten track pointing out some many points of interest along the way. The Landrover is a fantastic mode of transport from which you get great views as you are sitting up nice and high. If you ever visit Guernsey we would definitely recommend Ant's tour, just brilliant.

The best way to see the island and all it's beauty. We had a fantastic trip. Ant is so knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you throw at him. We did the 3 hour trip and did not want it to end. Thanks Ant can't recommend you highly enough, the seats in the Land Rover enable everyone to get great views way better than being in a car.

This is a great way to see places that are off the beaten track with a knowledgeable guide. Ant was an informative and interesting guide - his commentary showed that he knew about the area and its history. We wouldn't have found many of the Route Tranquille had we not been with Ant.
