Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... | 2001

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... filming location: Waddesdon Manor, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

  • Locations |
  • Oxfordshire ;
  • Buckinghamshire ;
  • Karan Johar
  • Shah Rukh Khan,
  • Hrithik Roshan,
  • Amitabh Bachchan,
  • Kareena Kapoor,
  • Rani Mukerji,
  • Himani Shivpuri,
  • Farida Jalal,
  • Johnny Lever,
  • Jaya Bhaduri

For only his second film as director Karan Johar brings together the biggest stars of Hindi cinema and pulls out all the stops to deliver a truckload of industrial strength soap – though at three and a half hours, the family drama works much better than the drippy Rohan-Pooja flirtation in the second half.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... filming location: Stowe School, Buckinghamshire

'Manor House', the UK school where the result of the opening cricket match comes down to Rohan Raichand ( Hrithik Roshan ), is Stowe School in Buckinghamshire . This former home of the Duke of Buckinghamshire , set in grounds landscaped by Capability Brown , is four miles north of Buckingham town itself (a few miles west of Milton Keynes), and usually open to the public for the first two weeks in April and from July through to the beginning of September. You can see the school again as '1930s Berlin' in Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade .

Rohan heads back to the Raichand family estate in 'Delhi', which turns out to be Waddesdon Manor , at the west end of Waddesdon village, on the A 41 six miles northwest of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire .

It was built in the 1880s as a country retreat, in the style of a Loire château, for French-born banker Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild . In the 1950s, the house was bequeathed to the National Trust and it’s now open to the public.

Not surprisingly, its striking appearance means it regularly features on-screen, as a 'French chateau' in Carry On – Don't Lose Your Head , in Guy Ritchie 's Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows , Karel Reisz 's biopic Isadora and – probably most famously – the ‘rogue’ Bond movie Never Say Never Again . It goes without saying that, like almost every stately home in the UK, it popped up in TV’s Downton Abbey .

No more Indian is the HQ of the Raichand company, which is Canary Wharf in East London .

The 'Bharat Sweet Shop', run by Anjali ( Kajol ) the daughter of a Chandni Chowk halwai, is supposedly Chandni Chowk , a major street within the walled city of Old Delhi , which was once the grandest of the markets in India. Chandni Chowk 's speciality is the variety of its markets, from authentic Indian food (well, what else?), delicacies and sweets, to sarees, leather goods and electronics. The area is even more congested than the rest of the city so, with the amount of action centred here – not to mention the Yeh Ladki Hai Allah number – it was recreated in the studio at Filmcity in Mumbai .

As Rahul becomes smitten with the regarded-as-lower-class Anjali, the fantasy number Suraj Hua Maddham sees the pair suddenly, and for no apparent reason, whisked off to Egypt .

The country is indicated by the appearance of the Pyramids at Giza . This pyramid complex is found on the Giza Plateau , an area of solid bedrock at the old town of Giza , about eight miles southwest of Cairo city centre, and now absorbed as part of the spreading metropolis.

This complex includes the three Great Pyramids and the Sphinx , as well as several cemeteries ( mastaba s for lesser royals who didn't quite merit a full monument) and the remnants of the village for the thousands of workers who did all the building.

If you're expecting to see the Pyramids rising from a featureless desert, you may be surprised how close they are to the built-up area. In fact, there's a Metro Line running from Cairo to Giza, although it doesn't go all the way to the complex, so there's still a bit of a journey. Alternatively, there's a CTA (Cairo Transport Authority) bus or you can take a taxi to the Pyramids from any part of Cairo at a reasonable cost – the fastest and easiest method. Use the Careem application (Middle East version of Uber) for Android or iPhones to order a car and professional driver. With options for fixed rates, it is the safest – and haggle-free – way to get around. This option is especially recommended for women solo travellers.

As with any busy tourist area, beware of scams and chancers. Don't give up your ticket to anyone outside the complex checkpoints. There are many unscrupulous opportunists claiming to work for the government who'll grab your ticket and start their own unofficial 'tour'.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... filming location: Farafra, Western Desert, Egypt

From this main tourism site, the musical number is off to less accessible sites, starting with the black quartz mountains of the Bahariya Oasis , in the Western Desert some 230 miles southwest of Cairo.

The sand-blasted white rocky outcrops can be found even further southwest into the White Desert, at Farafra , approximately midway between the Dakhla and Bahariya oases.

You should be aware that there are currently significant security threats in regions of Egypt such as the Western desert and Sinai. Organised tours are probably your best option.

Finally, the golden sands are those of of Hurghada , a resort on the Red Sea , nearly 250 miles southeast of Cairo .

Rohan ( Hrithik Roshan ) flies off to London to track down his estranged step-brother – cue a montage of the capital's tourist landmarks: Tower Bridge , the Houses of Parliament , the London Eye and the theatres of the West End .

For the Vande Mataram number, he conjures up a bevy of dancing girls outside the Empire Leicester Square Cinema , 5-6 Leicester Square, WC2 ; before flitting off to the Thames Embankment ; the magisterial entrance of the Natural History Museum , Cromwell Road in South Kensington, SW7 ; and the concourse of Liverpool Street Station , a popular location seen in Brian De Palma 's Mission: Impossible , and – seen before major renovations in all its smoke-blackened Victorian glory – in David Lynch 's The Elephant Man .

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... filming location: Blenheim Palace, Woodstock, Oxfordshire

'King's College', where the grown up Pooja ( Kareena Kapoor ) displays attitude, is Blenheim Palace , in the village of Woodstock , eight miles north of Oxford, Oxfordshire .

The vast Baroque mansion, designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the early 18th century, was home to the Dukes of Marlborough, the Churchill family, becoming the birthplace and childhood home of wartime Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill . The house and its extensive grounds are now open to the public.

Blenheim appeared as ‘Hallucinogen Hall’, the home of Sir August de Wynter ( Sean Connery ) in Jeremiah Chechik ’s 1998 film of The Avengers , as 'Elsinore' in Kenneth Branagh 's epic 1996 film of Hamlet , as the palace of King Leopold of Belgium ( Thomas Kretschmann ) in The Young Victoria and as the 'Italian palazzo' in 2015 James Bond movie Spectre .

When (the unrecognised) Rohan rocks up at the college in a swanky red Lamborghini, the Deewana Hai Dekho begins in front of Blenheim Palace , but soon moves on the several different locations.

The college's football field (complete with very American cheerleaders) is the Millennium Stadium / Stadiwm y Mileniwm in Cardiff , South Wales . Opened in 1999, it's home to the Welsh national rugby union team, and on-screen stood in for London 's 'Wembley Stadium' in 28 Weeks Later...

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... filming location: The Great Court, British Museum, Great Russell Street, London WC1

The newly-roofed, sparkling white Great Court of the British Museum , Great Russell Street , becomes the college interior. Opened in 2000, the Court is a radical revamp of the museum's old circular Reading Room.

And then it's on to Hay's Galleria, 2 Hay's Lane , on the South Bank of the Thames in Southwark SE1 . Originally Hay's Wharf and warehouse, where tea clippers from India and China delivered most of the nation's favourite beverage to the Port of London, the old dock was roofed-over and redeveloped in the 1980s.

From here, it's not too far to the restaurant terrace where Rohan asks Pooja for help to reunite him with Rahul. It's Cantina del Ponte , 36 Shad Thames , on the Butler's Wharf quayside. Initially a Terence Conran restaurant, it’s since changed hands, but remains a heartily Italian restaurant – and with a terrific view of Tower Bridge, seen also in Bridget Jones’s Diary .

Don't bother to search out the vast London disco to which Pooja goes with Robbie, and where Rohan inevitably turns up, which was a set built at the old Filmistan Studio in the Goregaon district of Mumbai .

'Millfield Primary School', where Krishi is supposed to sing Do Re Mi but instead sings Jana Gana Mana , the Indian national anthem, at the 'School Annual Day Function' (uh?) looks pretty impressive even for a private school. It's actually Osterley Park House , Jersey Road, Isleworth , west London, an Elizabethan mansion magnificently transformed by architect Robert Adam between 1760 and 1780, and now a National Trust property. The house supplied the interior of 'Wayne Manor' in The Dark Knight Rises , among many other film appearances.

Rohan 'encourages' his parents to visit London , where he engineers a meeting in the vast Bluewater Shopping Mall , at Greenhithe in Kent (though it's nearly 18 miles southeast of the city). Opened in 1999, it houses 330 stores, 40 cafés and restaurants and the 13-screen Showcase Cinema .

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...

  • After marrying a poor woman, rich Rahul is disowned by his father and moves to London to build a new life. Years later, his now-grown younger brother Rohan embarks on a mission to bring Rahul back home and reunite the family.
  • Yashvardhan Raichand lives a very wealthy lifestyle along with his wife, Nandini, and their two sons, Rahul and Rohan. While Rahul has been adopted, Yashvardhan and Nandini treat him as their own. When their sons mature, they start to look for suitable brides for Rahul, and decide to get him married to a young woman named Naina. When Rahul is told about this, he tells them that he loves another woman by the name of Anjali Sharma. Yashvardhan decides to meet with the Sharma family, and finds out that they are middle-classed, unsophisticated, and will not be able to it into his family circle, as a result he refuses to permit Rahul to marry Anjali. A defiant Rahul decides to leave, gets married to Anjali, without his foster parents blessings, and re-locates to London, England, where Anjali's unmarried sister, Pooja, also lives. Rohan, who was studying in a hostel, returns home to find that Rahul is no longer living with them, and he also discovers that while outwardly his dad is not interested in seeing Rahul get back, Nandini wants the family back all together for all happy and sad moments. Rohan also misses Rahul a lot, and decides to travel to London in order to try and get Rahul to return home. Yashvardhan, is unable to prevent this, and as a result Rohan does travel to London, meets with Rahul, Anjali, and Pooja. Will the hurt and sorrow that Rahul experienced with his foster parents be erased and enable the family to be reunited, or will Rahul forget about the past, and continue to live his life without getting back to his roots and the family who brought him up, leaving Rohan to return alone? — rAjOo ([email protected])
  • Raichand would like his two sons to live together with him and his wife, and get married to girls of his choice. One of his sons, Rahul, is adopted; Rohan is his biological son. Rahul falls in love with a poor Indian girl named Anjali, and incurs the displeasure of Raichand, they argue and fight, as a result Rahul leaves the house, moves to Britain, and settles down. Raichand now focuses his attention on his own son, Rohan, who has no plans to get married, but is determined to bring Rahul and Anjali back home so that they can be together again. Will Raichand permit Rohan to have his way, or will he also ask him to leave the house? — Sumitra (corrected by Sonia)
  • Yashwardhan Raichand is a man who has always followed tradition. He believes that the parents take the best decisions for their children. When his foster son Rahul falls for a peppy middle-class girl Anjali, Yashwardhan disowns him. This creates a rift between the two egotistical men. Rahul weds Anjali and relocates to London with her and her sister Pooja. Years later, Rahul's younger brother Rohan arrives in London, determined to reunite his family. — Soumitra
  • Yashovardhan Raichand is a distinguished, well-respected man with a foundation of a strong business empire. He lives a lavish lifestyle with his wife Nandini and their two sons Rahul and Rohan. Yash is firm on values, heritage, and traditions of his ancestors, which he tries to pass onto his two sons. Rahul, the elder, found out at age 7 that the Raichands adopted him at birth, and he deeply considers it as a debt for the rest of his life: Rahul, every word, wish, and, thought becomes charter etched in stone which he would never break. Rahul breaks his charter when he dared to do the unpermissable by his father: fall in love with Anjali who lives in the Delhi's discouraged Chandni Chowk with her younger sister Pooja and father Bauji. The day after Bauji's death, Rahul marries Anjali and brings her home as the new "ghar ki bahu." Yash is broken into pieces and hammers with a speech on Rahul. Rahul's wedding night was the night where he was disowned, considered never in existence by Yash. Rahul leaves the very house where he considered a haven, for what his mother taught him to believe in. Rohan had been sent away to boarding school only to return after graduating from college. When Rohan finds what had, his only goal is to reunite the family. Will he be successful in finding where his best friend brother is settled? Will he manage to convince his stubborn father? — gavin@[email protected]
  • Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a filthy rich and opulent real estate tycoon, living with his loving wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and their two sons, Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is adopted whilst Rohan is their biological son. Rahul feels indebted to his parents when he finds out at the age of eight that he is adopted. Yash expects both of his sons to abide by the traditions of their family - this includes studying abroad and having arranged marriages. When Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) returns home after studying abroad for several years, Yash praises him for graduating with an academic bachelor's degree and hands over his empire to his adopted son as a reward. Rahul promises his father that, no matter what happens, he will always abide by the family's traditions. One afternoon, Rahul encounters Anjali (Kajol), a cheerful, vivacious and bubbly gal at a slum. Rahul becomes enamored with Anjali, mesmerized by her at first sight. Anjali initially finds him annoying but after they spend some more quality time hanging out together, Anjali gradually reciprocates his love. She nervously hesitates upon learning that Rahul is born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Anjali feels that their relationship won't go the distance, coming from a struggling, low income working class background. Yash wants his close friend's daughter Naina (Rani Mukherji), whom he sees as a very suitable girl, married to Rahul. Naina was also close friends with Rahul in school. Naina professes her love for Rahul, but he politely turns her down, explaining that his heart is enamored with another woman. Naina lets Rahul go, encouraging Rahul to follow his heart. When Rahul informs his father about Anjali and that he intends to marry her instead of Naina, Yash is furiously grumpy upon hearing this. Yash berates Rahul for being non-traditionally foolish by letting his infatuation for a dirt girl who is a complete stranger cloud his judgment. Yash also expresses disappointment that his son has such middle class dreams. Rahul placates his father by assuring Yash that he will cut ties with Anjali. He sets off to the slum to break the news to Anjali that they cannot be together. Upon arriving on the scene, Rahul is shocked and saddened to discover that Anjali's father (Alok Nath) has suddenly died of natural causes. unable to bear the shock to see Anjali hysterically weeping and fearing that she will be left alone in the world after her father's death, Rahul decides to marry her a few days later, against his father's wishes. Yash becomes quite upset, seething and furiously outraged when Rahul arrives back home with Anjali in tow, claiming that Rahul's action is egregiously unforgivable, contrary to the Raichand family blood. Yash ruthlessly disowns Rahul and forcibly evicts him from the house, snarling that Rahul is dead to him. He angrily demands Rahul to move out of his house and get out of his life. With no other option, Rahul takes his leave, and takes Anjali with him. Nandini and Rahul share a tearful goodbye. Nandini also sends Rahul's nanny Sayeeda (Farida Jalal) so that Rahul can always feel a mother's love. Before leaving, Rahul visits Rohan who is in boarding school and advises him on what to do when he wishes to achieve something in life. He requests that Rohan never asks why he left or where he went. A decade later, a grown-up Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) learns from his grandmothers, Achala Sachdev (Yash's mother) and Sushma Seth (Nandini's mother), the fact that Rahul was adopted and also the reason why he left. Rohan sees the pain of a broken family divided; he vows to bring Rahul and Anjali back home, no matter what it costs. He learns from Sayeeda's daughter that Rahul has relocated London with Anjali and her little sister Pooja. Rohan lies his parents that he intends to do his MBA in London, which they agree to let him do. In London, Rahul and Anjali have become wealthy. They are raising a young son named Krishi. Rohan enrolls into King's College where a grown-up Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) is also a student. Rohan and Pooja meet and he tells her that he has come to take his brother and sister-in-law back to their rightful places in their home in India. Pooja agrees to help Rohan take Rahul and Anjali back. Pooja informs Rahul that Rohan is her friend's cousin who has come from India to study and needs a place to stay. Rahul reluctantly agrees to let the young man stay, not knowing who he really is. Rohan reminds the family of how much they miss India. At a school function, Rohan asks Krishi to perform the Indian National Anthem. When Krishi informs everybody about this, Rahul discovers Rohan's true identity (Rohan uses exactly the same words of advice that Rahul had spoken to him ten years ago). Rohan tearfully begs his brother to come home - he says that Nandini loves Rahul the most and always will. Rahul refuses as he still believes that Yash does not love him. Pooja, however, feels sure that Rahul will go back home. She encourages Rohan to invite his parents over to London and get them to meet Rahul. Nandini and Rahul share a happy reunion. But Rahul still refuses to talk to his father. Shortly Yash finds out the truth that Rohan had lied to him about the London trip, he becomes outraged at Rohan. Yash's mother is on her death bed and her last wish is for her funeral pyre to be lit by Yash, Rahul and Rohan together. They all travel back to India for the funeral, but Rahul and Yash do not speak with one another. Nandini tells Yash, for the first time in ten years, that she believes he was wrong in cutting off ties with Rahul. Rohan talks sense into Rahul and makes him realize just how much Yash and Nandini really love him. When Rahul and Yash encounter each other once again, for the first time in years, in the living room of Yash's mansion, they both share an emotionally tearful reunion. All is forgiven when Yash reconciles with Rahul after burying the hatchet. Yash sincerely apologizes to Rahul for disowning his elder son and also admits that he has always loved him. Rohan and Pooja get married and the family also have a belated celebration of Rahul and Anjali's wedding. The credits come up with a family portrait.

Here’s The Truth Behind The Grand Raichand Haveli In Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

Curated By : Entertainment Bureau

Local News Desk

Last Updated: August 25, 2023, 13:09 IST

Delhi, India

Waddesdon Manor is situated in England.

Waddesdon Manor is situated in England.

The mansion belongs to one of the richest families in the world and is located in a foreign country.

Karan Johar-directorial Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham became a massive commercial and critical success in 2001. The movie garnered praise, not only for its star cast but also for its captivating setting. The grandeur of the Raichand Haveli fascinated audiences. Despite what was shown in the film, that the Victorian mansion was close to Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, the reality is different. The mansion belongs to one of the richest families in the world and has no ties to Chandni Chowk; in fact, it is located in a foreign country. The grand mansion in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is Waddesdon Manor (England).

Between 1874 and 1899, the Waddesdon Manor was constructed for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. Later, in 1957, his grandson James de Rothschild left the house and its contents to the National Trust. Since then, the location has become open for filming movies and TV shows. The property is under the ownership of the British National Trust, but its management is still overseen by the Rothschild Foundation.

Many international films and TV shows have been filmed in this grand mansion. Some of these productions include The Crown, Bridgerton, Downton Abbey, The Queen, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is the only Indian film that was shot on its premises.

The mansion’s historical significance comes from its connection with the influential Rothschild family. The Rothschilds, known as a Jewish banking family, can be traced back to Meyer Amschel Rothschild, an 18th-century German aristocrat. At the height of their power in the 19th century, they held the distinction of possessing the world’s largest private fortune.

Even though their wealth declined in the 20th century, their influence over global banking remained significant. While various estimates exist for their combined wealth, the general agreement is that they are worth approximately $300 billion, giving them the tag of the world’s wealthiest family, ahead of the Waltons and the Ambanis.

A still from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

My streaming gem: why you should watch Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

The latest in our series of under-appreciated films available to stream is a recommendation for a 2001 Bollywood extravaganza

C locking in at three and a half hours long, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham is a remarkably swift Bollywood experience. In fact, the 2001 film could be seen as the perfect introduction to the gloriously kitsch, melodramatic musical genre.

Watching it is one of my earliest and most significant memories of Indian cinema, shovelling down a bucketful of popcorn while shrill yet ineffably catchy musical numbers played out, outfits and locations were changed at will, and a deluge of onscreen tears fell. For an Indian born and brought up in London and surrounded largely by people who looked nothing like me, this was a window into a new, fantastical life. One which I couldn’t understand a word of, since I didn’t speak Hindi.

Like any Bollywood film worth its salt, Kabhi Khushi is really three films in one. Film one: the older, adopted son of the fabulously wealthy Raichand family, Rahul (played by the Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan at the height of his hair-swishing power) is the apple of his father Yash’s eye (played by the elder statesman Amitabh Bachchan, sporting a leathery toupee throughout). Yash has Rahul swanning around town in the family helicopter and he has his bride picked out – the high-society, docile beauty Naina (played by my childhood crush Rani Mukerji). So far so good, but a brush with the working class, bolshy Anjali (played by Kajol, Mukerji’s real-life cousin) in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk market soon spells trouble. Rahul falls in love with Anjali and tearfully confronts his powerful dad, who disapproves while foreboding thunder erupts in the background. Dad gives Rahul a choice: dump Anjali and remain part of the family, or leave forever. Rahul chooses Anjali, weepy goodbyes ensue and dad’s toupee remains.

Film two: some years after Rahul was adopted, Yash and his wife, Nandini (played by the peerless, glassy-eyed Jaya Bachchan, real-life wife of Amitabh) had a biological son, Rohan. Rohan grew into a rotund preteen who very much looked up to his older brother, who he never knew was adopted. Once big brother was banished, Rohan was sent to boarding school to transform into the washboard-ab-toting Bollywood hero Hrithik Roshan. Upon returning home from school, the nowripped Rohan overhears the truth of his brother’s banishment and seeks to find him in the UK, where he has been living for the past decade. Cut to Rohan in London, where he soon falls for “hottest girl in town”, Pooja (her friends call her Poo), played by the nonchalant Kareena Kapoor. It turns out that Pooja is Anjali’s younger sister and has been living with her and Rahul all this time. There ensues a convoluted half-hour of Rohan gaining Rahul’s trust before he reveals that they are brothers by secretly inviting his parents from India for a meeting in the Bluewater shopping centre. Tears fall again, this time in the food court.

Film three: this is where things really come to a head. Rahul still vows not to return to India since his father has upheld his promise to never welcome him. News of the death of the boys’ grandmother soon prompts a joint trip back, though, where the denouement ensues. Rahul and Yash avoid each other in the halls of the palatial Raichand home while Nadini fends off the tears and does much hand-wringing with her daughter-in-law. In a final scene before they are set to fly back to England, the thunder cracks once more in the room where Rahul was first banished, but this time it is his father at last begging for forgiveness, having realised his mistakes with the help of his wife finally breaking her silence. All is forgiven, blessings are exchanged and as the credits roll, Rohan and Poo get married too.

Never let it be said that Bollywood films aren’t good value for money. If you hadn’t guessed it by the tagline – “It’s all about loving your parents” – this is a film about blindly fighting for your parents’ acceptance, even if they have tried to deny you your happiness. It’s not the most progressive narrative but this is an emblem of a bygone era of Bollywood film-making, one on the cusp of modernity yet still inhibited by tradition. There may be a narrative of immigrant assimilation and the hint of sexual frisson, but nothing goes beyond a kiss and the ultimate pleasure is your father’s blessing, back in the eternal home of India. It is ultimately melodramatic and packed with libidinal capitalism but it will hold your attention. It did for the millions that flocked to see it on its release, making it the highest-grossing Indian film that year.

If nothing else, after three and a half hours of viewing, only the most heartless will find themselves dry-eyed. The rest of us will be weeping into the remnants of our popcorn and remembering to call our parents soon.

The film’s stellar ensemble cast delivers powerful performances, making the ending all the more impactful.

In conclusion, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’s ending is a perfect culmination of the film’s themes and narrative arcs. It leaves audiences with a profound message about the importance of family, forgiveness, and love. This iconic Bollywood film continues to be cherished by fans worldwide for its timeless story and unforgettable ending.
