A Perfectly Cromulent Classical Guide To 'The Simpsons' Marathon

Mark Mobley

From its start nearly 25 years ago, The Simpsons was different. Not only was it animated, it had a Murderer's Row of voice actors and writing talent . It was absurdly funny and more than occasionally touching. Today, the show still embraces an uncommonly wide range of comedy, from slapstick to laser-guided wordplay.

History's longest-running American prime-time scripted TV show also has its recurring obsessions, from politics to religion to sports (Marge, watching basketball: "How come they never call traveling anymore?"). Classical music has come up again and again on the show, even from its earliest days. The second episode, from January 1990, includes a trip to the opera — Bizet 's Carmen, performed, as a sign says, "Tonite Only in RUSSIAN." Over the seasons, there have been references to composers, singers, instrumentalists and even, in one memorable case, the architect of an iconic concert hall.

In September, members of the cast, series creator Matt Groening and guests including Conan O'Brien and Jon Lovitz will join the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and music director Thomas Wilkins for three concerts featuring scenes from the show . For a program that honors the entire tradition of animation and film scoring, it's fitting that they'll be where Bugs Bunny conducted .

Prepare For 'The Simpsons' Marathon With Interviews From The 'Fresh Air' Archives

Thursday, a 12-day marathon of every Simpsons episode to date begins on the new Fox network FXX. All 552 shows are running in their premiere order , from 10 a.m. ET/PT Thursday to midnight Sept. 1. Here's a guide to a few of the episodes with classical cameos — note that Aug. 28 is an especially highbrow day. (All times Eastern and Pacific.)

Thursday, Aug. 21, 10:30 a.m. "Bart the Genius" (1990)

Bart switches IQ tests with a legitimate genius. Feeling guilty about not having encouraged Bart's brilliance, Marge buys tickets to Carmen . Bart sings along: "Toreador, oh, don't spit on the floor. Please use the cuspidor, that's what it's for." (Yet this may be only the silver medal sitcom Carmen — the gold still goes to Gilligan's Island .)

Thursday Aug. 28, 3:30 a.m. "Margical History Tour" (2004)

In this elaborate Amadeus spoof, the shelves of the Springfield Public Library are suddenly empty. Marge fills the void by telling stories about historical figures, including Mozart , played by Bart: "Hello, Vienna! Are there any aficionados in the house?" A concert hall has entrances marked "FOPS" and "DANDIES."

Thursday Aug. 28, 4 p.m. "The Seven-Beer Snitch" (2005)

Springfield is being mocked by rival Shelbyville; Marge's answer is to commission a concert hall from architect Frank Gehry (designer of Disney Hall in Los Angeles, and one of Groening's neighbors). Flanders agrees: "We could use a new HQ for the Springfield Philharmonic. They're playing Gustav Mahler in abject squalor!" Gehry (playing himself) reads a letter from Marge, tosses it aside and then realizes the crumpled sheet is the design for the hall, exclaiming, "Frank Gehry, you're a genius!" But in 2011, Gehry told CNN that the joke has had an exasperating afterlife, as clients ask him to wad paper: "People who have seen The Simpsons believe it."

Thursday Aug. 28, 11:30 p.m. "The Italian Bob" (2005)

One of the lesser-known aspects of The Simpsons is the show's strong connection to the magnificent Dr. Seuss cult film The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T , a comic horror musical about piano lessons. Simpsons villain Sideshow Bob Terwilliger (voiced by Kelsey Grammer) is named for the movie's title character, and one of Mr. Burns' songs, " See My Vest ," is a blend of " Be Our Guest " from the Disney Beauty and the Beast and the unbelievable " Dressing Song: Do-Mi-Do Duds " from Dr. T . In this episode, the Simpsons are in Rome, where Krusty is appearing in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci at the Coliseum (Homer, exasperated: "Ohhhhh, opera ? They have that here too ?"). Bob is on his usual murderous rampage.

Friday Aug. 29, 8:30 p.m. "The Homer of Seville" (2007)

After accidentally crashing a wake, Homer falls into an open grave. The bad news: back injury. The good news: He's now a singer, but only when lying down. Burns recruits him for a leading role in Puccini 's La bohème anyway. In a locker room backstage, a shirtless Placido Domingo snaps Homer with a towel and says, "Nice set, Homer. That was a hot one." "Thanks," Homer says. "You know, of The Three Tenors , you're my second favorite. No, wait, I forgot about that other guy. Sorry, you're third."

Monday Sept. 1, 3:30 p.m. "The Kid Is All Right" (2013)

Last season included one of the show's finest musical moments, a celebration of Walt Disney's Depression-era output, made in the form of a couch gag (all Simpsons episodes open with the family assembling on the sofa to watch TV). "Music Ville" is based on "Music Land," a cartoon from Disney's "Silly Symphonies" series. Simpsons music editor Chris Ledesma has a fascinating account of the episode's production, complete with character sketches and the original Disney cartoon.

Correction Aug. 21, 2014

A previous version of this story called The Simpsons history's longest-running scripted TV show. It's the longest-running American prime-time scripted TV show.

Trivia / The Simpsons S 15 E 11 Margical History Tour

Edit locked.

  • Henry (Homer) tells Princess Mary (Lisa) to "grow a penis or get lost!" After a few minutes of straining, Lisa gives up on the attempt. While this is obviously a silly scene, some people in this time period thought that the uterus, vagina, and ovaries basically were an inside-out penis and testicles and that excessive physical activity could cause them to fall out on rare occasions. Anatomy was a pretty new science back then.
  • Henry's fifth wife says "You didn't dump me, I dumped you!" seconds before being beheaded. The real Henry's fifth wife, Katherine Howard, did have an affair with courtier Thomas Culpeper, and legend has it that she declared on the scaffold that she would rather have died as his wife.

Cultural references [ edit ]

  • The title is a pun on the song , album and film Magical Mystery Tour by The Beatles .
  • Some items seen in the library are Everybody Poops: The Video , Yu-Gi-Oh! Price Guides , and Itchy & Scratchy books on tape.
  • In the song, Homer sings that we saw Donald Sutherland 's ass and the end was done like American Graffiti .

Henry VIII [ edit ]

  • Homer (as Henry VIII) sings a variation of " I'm Henery the Eighth, I Am ".
  • " Greensleeves " plays several times during the segment.
  • Henry wipes his mouth with the Magna Carta .
  • Margarine of Aragon is a parody of Catherine of Aragon , Henry VIII's first wife.
  • Anne Boleyn 's business card says "A Son'll Come Out Tomorrow", a reference to the song " Tomorrow " from the musical Annie .
  • When Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn are making love, she says "Oh, Henry!" a reference to the candy bar, Oh Henry! .
  • Homer says to Bart in his dream to "get out of my dreams and into my wife", a reference to the song, " Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car ", which in turn was inspired by a line in the song " You're Sixteen ".
  • Marge says that one of the good things about Elizabeth I's reign is the fact that it gives various British actresses a role to play when they reach a certain age, a reference to the frequent portrayals of Elizabeth in film and television by famous actresses such as Glenda Jackson , Helen Mirren and Judi Dench .
  • Anne of Cleves (portrayed by Agnes Skinner ) is a parody of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salsbury who like this character, was arrested for no crimes at all and took three swings of the axe to behead.

Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea [ edit ]

  • Part of " Hail to the Chief " plays when the White House is seen.
  • Lewis and Clark travel under the Saint Louis Gateway Arch , made of lumber.
  • Immediately after Carl says they've discovered the beautiful Pacific Northwest it starts raining, a reference to the rainy climate of the Pacific Northwest.
  • The "butter box" that Sacagawea was said to have posed for is a reference to the picture on the Land O'Lakes butter box.

Mozart and Salieri [ edit ]

  • Sally Salieri is a parody of composer Antonio Salieri .
  • Mozart plays " Piano Sonata No. 11 " on the piano.
  • The T-Shirt "Bat Out of Salzburg" is a reference to the song " Bat Out of Hell " by Meat Loaf .
  • The music in Bart's opera, " The Musical Fruit ", is in fact Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik with the lyrics rewritten to refer to flatulence. Eine kleine Nachtmusik , however, is a serenade, not an opera.
  • The three other untalented members of the family are three members from The Jackson 5 .
  • In the scenes where Mozart is ill and living on the street, and later, dying, the music playing in the background is from " Requiem Mass " by Mozart .
  • Beethoven plays " Symphony No. 9 " on the piano.
  • Beethoven's laugh imitates the opening bars from " Symphony No. 5 ".
  • Lisa points out Marge's story sounds a lot like the movie Amadeus which was historically inaccurate. The only think Homer knows is "the guy who played Mozart was also in Animal House " which is referring to Tom Hulce .

Trivia [ edit ]

  • When Reverend Lovejoy officiates at King Henry's second marriage, he says "In the name of the Henry, the Hank and the holy Harry". The latter two are references to cast members Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer .
  • A Mozart-esque version of the Gracie Films logo is used for this episodes Gracie Films logo.

Continuity [ edit ]

  • Episode established that Homer has seen the movie Amadeus which stars F. Murray Abraham as Antonio Salieri and won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the episode " Homer Simpson in: "Kidney Trouble" " Homer refuses to pull over despite Grampa needing to urite because he wants to get home to not miss F. Murray Abraham on that night's episode of Inside the Actor's Studio reiterating his fandom of F. Murray Abraham .

Historical errors [ edit ]

  • Jane Seymour was not one of the executed wives. In fact, she died shortly after giving birth to the baby boy that Henry had long sought.
  • Catherine of Aragon was not locked in a dungeon after Henry divorced her. She was exiled and died long before Henry.
  • The castle of Henry VIII has a flag with blue and vertical and horizontal white lines. This is not a flag of Britain or any of its countries - the Scottish flag (which is also blue and white) has a cross, not vertical and horizontal lines.
  • Marge explains how Elizabeth I eventually became queen and that England's power was never greater; in fact, England reached its greatest power about four centuries later as the British Empire. The true order of succession after Henry's death was Edward VI; Lady Jane Grey, who was named in order to keep the Catholic Mary from bringing Catholicism back to England; Mary, who usurped the throne and had Jane executed; and finally Elizabeth, after Mary died childless.
  • The chief (Homer) says that Sacagawea's (Lisa) name meant "little know-it-all who won't shut her maizehole." In reality, her name is said to mean "bird woman." The joke translation is a reference to Lisa's being smart and always talking.
  • Lewis and Clark are portrayed as being complete morons, which they were not in real life. The unflattering portrayal is due to their being played by Lenny and Carl, who are in fact simple-minded.
  • When Lewis and Clark sight the Pacific Ocean, Lewis says they'll name this place "Eugene, Oregon". In reality, they sighted the Pacific at the mouth of the Columbia River, near modern-day Astoria, Oregon. The view of the Pacific in the episode has Haystack Rock and the adjacent smaller rock island known as the Needles in Cannon Beach, Oregon which William Clark did visit in 1805 at what is known as Clark's Point of View today.
  • Clark (Carl) calls Sacagawea (Lisa) Pocahontas , Pocahontas is best remembered when she was nine or ten years old and saving John Smith's life. This is close to Lisa's age on the show, whereas Sacagawea was 16 or 17 when she traveled with Lewis and Clark.
  • Salieri was a man and he was not related to Mozart at all.
  • Mozart did have a musically talented sister, but she was named Marianne and 4 years older.
  • At the time of Mozart's death both his mother Anna Maria and father Leopold as well as Emperor Joseph II were already dead.
