Thursday 1st September. Scala. Andrew Combs and Margo Price. It’s a great double header tonight with Ms Margo Price headlining supported by the excellent Andrew Combs. It’s me and the missus tonight at the Scala a compact venue with good sight lines although terrible accessibility and bottle necks.
Texan Combs has a couple of fine albums under his belt and has been namechecked at a couple of gigs I have been to over the past year or so. ‘Fresh’ from his transatlantic plane he rattles though 45 minutes of new songs and a few oldies accompanied by his acoustic guitar. He’s a real talent, the songs sounds great and the crowd are warmly appreciative.
It’s then onto the main act. It’s fair to say that life has dealt a bum hand to Margo Price over the years. Hers is the classic country tale of life, loss, love, heartbreaks, booze, and jail but thankfully she draws on all of this to have produced one the finest country albums in years.
I was expecting a sedate laid back classic country gig but what we got was a powerhouse show from the tightest band I have seen since Sturgill last year. Price has a commanding presence on stage unleashing her impressive voice though a set of originals and covers. There’s a real warmth and connection between her and the audience and she is genuinely happy to be playing here for us tonight.
But it’s not all bombast and there’s some lighter moments none more so than when it’s just her and her husband duetting around a single microphone.
There’s a suitable dig at country’s establishment the CMAs where she has been shamefully overlooked for any the awards. Price’s future is assured in spite of this if she continues to produces albums and shows of this quality.
In a set full of highlights ‘Hands of Time’ and ‘Hurtin on the bottle’ really nail it for me. The band are joined on stage for the encore by album producer Alex Munoz who has just received the all clear from cancer that day where they proceed to blow the lights in the venue but they carry on illuminated by the crowd’s phones and end the night with Gram Parsons ‘Ooh las Vegas’.
After the Avett Brothers the night before its two five star gigs in a row. Let’s see if Drew Holcomb and the Jayhawks can match that next week.
Keep on rockin y’all.

Far from sold-out, with tickets being given away out front, Price may not have packed the house like some of the artists she’s been associated with, but that didn’t stop her from performing as if she were headlining the Ryman herself.
After showcasing his incredible guitar skills from the comfort on a stool center stage, William Tyler made way for the headliner, but not before giving thanks to his Nashville neighbor. “She’s saving country music one night at a time…it means a lot that she asked me to come out with her.”
Following an age-old tradition, the men set the stage for their female lead. “Ladies and gentlemen, Margo Price.” Walking out with her own guitar that looked as worn and seasoned as Tyler’s did before, Price joined her five-piece backing band. Consisting of guitar, bass, steel pedal, keyboard, drums, and the occasional piano accordion, they presented a tight knit group who gave the impression they had been playing together much longer than they truly had.
With a voice, reminiscent of those who found fame before she was born, Price can channel Loretta Lynn, but her stories are the real draw. Even without all the publicity around her (almost too perfect for country music) history, there would be no doubt that she’d lived the songs she sings.
“Hands of Time”, which came mid-set, provided the cliff notes (her father lost the farm, so she went to the big city to try to make money to buy it back, only to find heartache and pain along the way), but songs like “Since You Put Me Down”, “This Town Gets Around”, and “Weekender” provided the much-needed color to flesh out the traditional rags-to-middle-class tale. The stage banter just added more depth to each life event…

Brilliant gig! Went having never heard any of Margo Price's recordings, purely on the merit I understood her to be be an exciting new artist.
Turns out the hype wasn't wrong. Brilliantly sweet voice and excellent leading lady and show-woman with a superb band. She and her band provided a storming set that I would happily watch all over again
Waited to get a signed CD after the performance and got to chat with her briefly and she was as delightful as as had shone through during the gig, a truly lovely lady!
Highly recommended
Margo was amazing! My husband introduced me to her music and although it took me awhile to get more into it, the show was the final "YES" for me. I took him to her concert for his birthday and we loved it. She is actually such a good entertainer, with such raw talent who really knows how to engage the crowd. It was one of the best concerts I've been to and I'm so happy we went.
Very small venue for Margo which created for a fantastic atmosphere.
Plenty of new songs from the current album with just a view older songs.
Hope she does another solo tour real soon...
Once again Margo Price delivered a fantastic show belting out songs from her album sounding better than ever and as a treat we got Jolene and me and Bobby Magee. Brilliant night all round
Amazing! I'm a fan for life! First time I had heard of her and the first time I seen her live. Hope to hear more from and about her. Unowned follow her on social media.

Margo Price Announces New Album, ‘Strays’, 2022–2023 Tour Dates [Video]
The rise, fall, and redemption of Margo Price will be told with her new album, Strays . Out on January 13th, 2023, the follow-up to her acclaimed 2020 LP That’s How Rumors Get Started will chronicle the dizzying highs and crushing lows of the singer-songwriter’s recent life. Along with Tuesday’s announcement, Price shared the second single, “Change Of Heart”, which follows “ Been To The Mountain “, released earlier this month.
While Price’s previous work has dealt openly with her struggles with grief, addiction, trauma, and more, the Grammy-nominated songwriter is letting go with Strays . The death of one of her twin boys, Ezra , in 2010 remains a constant source of pain, but with a newly alcohol-free outlook on life, Price has returned from the mountain with “a celebration of freedom in its many, feral forms.”
“I feel this urgency to keep moving, keep creating,” Price said in a press release. “You get stuck in the same patterns of thinking, the same loops of addiction. But there comes a point where you just have to say, ‘I’m going to be here, I’m going to enjoy it, and I’m not going to put so much stock into checking the boxes for everyone else.’ I feel more mature in the way that I write now, I’m on more than just a search for large crowds and accolades. I’m trying to find what my soul needs.”
Price recorded Strays over five days in the summer of 2021 at Fivestar Studio in California’s Topanga Canyon, but the roots stretch back to the previous summer, when she took a trip to South Carolina. During a mushroom-filled six-day excursion with her husband and frequent collaborator Jeremy Ivey , Price began writing what would eventually become Strays . The album of ten original songs also features additional vocals from Sharon Van Etten and Lucius , in addition to guitar from Mike Campbell and strings, synthesizers, and other previously untapped sounds for Price.

Margo Price will take Strays on the road with a run of over 30 new tour dates set to carry her from November 2022 through March 2023. The new shows will feature support from Kam Franklin (The Suffers), The Deslondes , Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country , Lola Kirke , Tre Burt , and Jessi Colter at various stops. A pre-sale for tickets to the newly announced shows begins at 10 a.m. local time tomorrow, September 21st, with tickets going on sale to the public on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.
Among the tour dates are a string of book appearances in support of Price’s debut memoir, Maybe We’ll Make It . Out on October 4th via University of Texas Press , the book tells the story of Price’s humble beginnings moving to Nashville with $57 through her ascension as one of the faces of the alt-country movement.
“Margo’s book hits you right in the gut—and the heart—just like her songs,” Willie Nelson said.

New dates in bold
Margo Price
Margo Price has something to say but nothing to prove. In just three remarkable solo albums, the singer and songwriter has cemented herself as a force in American music and a generational talent. A deserving critical darling, she has never shied away from the sounds that move her, the pain that’s shaped her, or the topics that tick her off, like music industry double standards, the gender wage gap, or the plight of the American farmer. (In 2021, she even joined the board of Farm Aid.)
Now, on her fourth full-length Strays , a clear-eyed mission statement delivered in blistering rock and roll, she’s taking on substance abuse, self-image, abortion rights, and orgasms. Musically extravagant but lyrically laser-focused, the 10-song record tears into a broken world desperate for remedy. And who better to tell it? Price has done plenty of her own rebuilding—or as she shout sings in explanation on “Been to the Mountain,” the set’s throat-ripping opener, “I have to the mountain and back alright”—and finds herself, at long last, free. Feral. Stray .
Moving from the sparse folk of her 2016 debut, Midwest Farmer’s Daughter , into the rollicking roots of its follow-up, All American Made , the following year, and, in 2020, into classic rock with Rumors , Price has established herself as a sonic explorer of the finest ilk. Still, she says, “This could be too out-there for people. But I just have this morality where I feel like, it has to be this .”
And this does sound different. Louder, lusher. More layered. Price and her band recorded the set across a blissful week in Topanga Canyon, California, at producer Jonathan Wilson’s Fivestar Studio in the summer of 2021. (A smaller second batch would get tracked in Music City, months later.) Wilson, who has helmed sets from Angel Olsen, Father John Misty, and Dawes in recent years, created a space for Price and her band—a longtime troupe that’s been honing their kinetic, even raucous, live show since before Midwest Farmer’s Daughter —to traverse new sounds and influences confidently.
Album opener “Been To The Mountain” showcases her “hard-living swagger” (The New York Times), while the Mike Campbell-assisted “Light Me Up” lays down a searing, explicit epic. “Radio,” a buoyant guitar track featuring Sharon Van Etten, embraces sunny pop melodies. While the dobro- and pedal steel-laden “Hell in the Heartland,” which Price penned in the immediate, uneasy aftermath of quitting drinking, builds towards a cacophony of distorted vocals and synthesizers.
Rock and roll, psychedelic country, rhythm & blues, and even bright shiny pop, they’re all there on Strays , but as each refract through her artistry, that delicate vocal, and unhurried delivery, they come out sounding singularly her. While the last few years have seen remarkable moments of acclaim—a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, Americana Music Honors, a Saturday Night Live performance, and just about every outlet and critics’ year-end Best Of list—Price is still hungry. “I still have a lot of drive inside of me,” she says. “I have a chip on my shoulder. It feels like I still haven’t been able to fully realize all my dreams yet, and that eats me up.” Just wait.

Far from overnight, Price’s recent meteoric rise is the product of more than a decade of hard work and sacrifice. While she’d long been one of East Nashville’s best-kept-secrets, she burst onto the international scene with the 2016 release of her first solo album, ‘Midwest Farmer’s Daughter.’ The record debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and graced Best-Of lists everywhere from Entertainment Weekly to NPR Music, who called it "the hard-won arrival of an artist who feels like she's always been here.” Vulture described Price as “one of the most compelling country talents to come out of Nashville in recent memory,” while Pitchfork hailed the album as “a potential classic,” and Rolling Stone praised its “amazingly vivid songcraft.” Price solidified her next-big-thing status with stellar performances on Saturday Night Live, Colbert, Fallon, CBS This Morning, Seth Meyers, A Prairie Home Companion, and more, in addition to taking home Emerging Artist of the Year honors at the Americana Music Awards and winning The American Music Prize for the year’s best debut album. She shared stages and bills with Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, and Chris Stapleton among others, and her compelling story—years of toil in the Nashville trenches, the loss of her family’s farm and the tragic death of her infant child, a brush with the law, selling her car and pawning her wedding ring to afford studio time, signing to Jack White’s Third Man Records as the label’s first country artist—was recounted in glowing profiles everywhere from the NY Times Magazine and the New Yorker to Morning Edition and Fader. The arrival of Price’s spectacular sophomore album, “All American Made,” proves that she hasn’t taken a moment of it for granted. Delivering on the promise of her debut and then some, the record finds Price planting her flag firmly in the soil as a songwriter who’s here for the long haul, one with the chops to hang with the greats she so often finds herself sharing stages with these days.

Lola Kirke stands out like a flash of neon magenta in this nostalgic landscape of Americana tin-types. While many of her singing, songwriting peers look further back for inspiration, Kirke’s sweet spot is decidedly in the excess of the 80’s. Anyone only familiar with Kirke through her on-screen performances (Mistress America, Gone Girl, or Mozart In The Jungle) may be surprised by just how dazzling Lola-playing-Lola can be.
