Awesome show! Great vocals. Fantastic banjo playing. For a 3 piece band they have a full sound. Would love to see them play a big festival with lights and a large stage.

Mary James stunned a small but enthusiastic crowd in August of 2022 and the video of her debut show continues to dominate the  Focal Point YouTube channel  with over 12,000 views!

She is an award-winning musician/writer and fan favorite (over 30 million views on her YouTube videos), Mean Mary, literally grew-up in music. She evolved from a child prodigy who played for tips on the streets of Nashville (“startling talent” said the Tennessean) to a seasoned performer and headliner of over 4000 festivals and concerts (“the voice of a ragged Angel combined with the banjo playing of the Devil” says No Depression).

Deering Banjos named her their Goodtime Ambassador, and Janet Deering describes her banjo playing as giving her “chills.” Equally versatile on guitar, fiddle, and 8 other instruments, Mary is known internationally for her lightning-fast fingers, haunting vocals, and intricate story songs. As a high-energy performer that thrives on variety and as a songwriter that chooses unusual subject matters, anything from ghost pirates to demon guitars could romp through a Mean Mary show.

Mean Mary “I’d Rather Be Merry”

If you want festive tunes to go with the presents and mulled wine this is the album to play. Non-cliché Christmas music.

Four originals are included ‘ Cardboard Box’ is a post-break-up song with some wry humour around getting an unexpected gift from an ex. You’ll need to listen to it for the very funny pay off though. In fairness ’Jingle Bells’ is almost impossible to do something new with, but the James’ have succeeded, again by using all the words rather than the couple of verses usually sung. Bluegrass or Country is clearly the medium for cheery festive tunes as again this is more than listenable.

An original instrumental ‘ Snowy ’ is next and shows off Mary James’ considerable Banjo chops. She manages to bring a feel of snowfall to it and winds the tune up with a descending run that Greg Lake would have been proud of. Of the other traditional tunes ‘Deck the Halls’ ‘The Holly and The Ivy’ and ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ are arranged as English folk tunes, with the interaction between David Henry’s Cello and Frank James’ 12-string guitar the standout instrumental sections on the lats of these.

And that points the way to the reason behind making this album. Her goal was to “make a fun, laid-back holiday album” that featured the style of music she and Frank played as children. She says “To be frank, I’d rather be merry is the catchphrase from the title track of the album, a play on their names, and the main theme of the album. Frank has always been the glass-half-empty person and I’ve always been the optimistic, happy one. I think everyone can relate to both personality types during the holidays. But I think most of us will agree, it’s better to be merry!” The words are offered with tongue firmly in cheek, with some gentle teasing of her brother in the verses.

Mary “We could build a snowman? Frank “Is that really necessary? Mary “Let’s make ornaments for the tree.” Frank “Or we could use the old decorations.” Mary “Christmas is a time we all should be happy.” Frank “You have very, very high expectations”.

“ O Holy Night ” is played straight with Mary’s vocals and piano, as is ‘ It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.’ The album closes with the last original ‘ Ding Dong Day’. This is the one they are clearly hoping for airplay from as it as a more commercial country flavour to the tune and the sort of radio-friendly arrangement that would make it stand out from the usual Christmas mush.

Has Mean Mary succeeded in making a holiday album you would actually want to play? Yes, she has. The originals add some humour to proceedings and the traditional tunes are presented with enough of a slant to make then sound fresh.

Mary James picked up the nickname Mean Mary all the way back at age 6, after the first song she wrote (with mom Jean) and recorded, “Mean Mary from Alabam,” got some media attention. Since then, James has been building a life in entertainment as a singer and multi-instrumentalist, actor, and novelist (again often collaborating with mom). Mean Mary’s most recent album, Portrait of a Woman, Part 1 , showcases a set of original songs most often anchored by James' banjo — which will also be the focus during this solo Sugar Maple Concert Series show.

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.
