Like all popular European destinations, Italy sees visitors throughout the year - rain, snow or shine. And all of these are a possibility depending on when you visit Italy. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its drawbacks, so when to go depends on your travel type and what activities you are interested in. Generally speaking, the best times to visit are during the `shoulder seasons` which is spring (April to June) or fall (September and October) when there are fewer tourists, lower prices, and moderate temperatures. The summer months bring an influx of tourists and increases in hotel rates, and higher temperatures. The winter months are often grey, wet, and cold in the north but temperate south of Rome. Whatever your pleasure, transportation in Italy is modern, easy to navigate and fits a variety of budget ranges. By Car: If it's the open road you're after, renting a car is the best way to travel in Italy. All the typical car rental companies are available at the major airports. Specify automatic or manual transmission, as car transportation in Italy (and Europe, for that matter) is usually manual. On the small, winding country roads, manners usually win out, and major highways span the country to help ease access to the major cities. So far my itinerary is as follows:

Day 1- Fly from London to Pisa , land at lunchtime, VAI bus (€4ish) to the leaning tower. Have food. Explore slightly.

Late train from Pisa to Florence . Check in to city centre hotel.

Day 2- Florence

Day 3 - train for daytrip to Siena

Day 4- Florence

Day 5- train from Florence to napoli centrale. Get in early afternoon. Stay in hotel

Day 6- Pompeii unsure of best travel method

Day 7- either flight or bus from Naples to Rome

Day 8- Rome

Day 9- Rome

Day 10- Leave for London

So Firstly does this itinerary look doable, would you swap anything?

In the time we have in Naples/ Florence is there anywhere we absolutely mustn’t miss?

Do you have any ideas for a good birthday restaurant in Florence and a good anniversary restaurant in Rome?

Should we buy an interrail pass or look at getting busses? Want to do this cheaply.

Does public transport run frequently on a Sunday in Italy?

Doable in the sense of theoretical? Or in the sense of enjoyable? It's too much rushing about for me but depends on what you intend to see and do.

From Florence to Naples high speed train. Either TrenItalia or Italo. Pick the one with a schedule you like best or watch the sales and pick the one that's cheapest.

Naples to Rome . High speed train. NO flight . Bus only if cost is the only issue but even if saving every penny matters instead of watch the sales.

NO passes. Point to point tickets bought direct from the companies.

There's luggage storage at tourist information point.

Any 'must sees' would depend on your interests, not mine.

The cheapest way to see Pompeii from Naples is to take the Circumvesuviana train http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/default/files/eavferro/Napoli%20Sorrento.pdf to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station is underneath Trenitalia's Napoli Centrale.

Your other train times can be found on http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en - Firenze S. M. Novella to Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini will be cheaper booked in advance.

My thoughts..

If you are only staying one night in Naples just to visit Pompeii , I would just visit Pompeii on a day-trip from Rome . It would save a hotel change, which eats up far too much precious time, imho (especially with your jam-packed plan;))

Day 4 - Florence and Pisa day trip

Day 5- Bus from Florence to Siena to stay the night

Day 6- ?? to get from Siena to Rome

Day 7- Rome

Day 8- Pompeii

Day 10- Home time

Hoping the trains don't work out too expensive due to the prices not being released yet!

I also read that Siena was magical at night so thought it might be good to experience it.

Head directly to Florence and visit Bologna as an easy day trip - go early in morning, come back after dinner. Drop Pisa and Verona. The following is still a full itinerary---

--arrive Florence - 1/2 day

--Florence 3.5 days/4 nights (day trip Siena , day trip Bologna, 1.5 days Florence)

--train to Rome - 1/2 day

--Rome 4.5 days/5 nights (day trip Pompeii , 3.5 days Rome)

--fly out Rome

Italy has wonderful destinations and it's difficult to not want to 'see it all' but you only have so much time. If your heart is set on particular destinations, then either drop others or add time to your vacation.....remember, there is travel time in between each change in destination and it is always more time than the posted train schedule. Plan 1/2 day for every 'travel day'. So...take a breath, prioritize and try to create a manageable and enjoyable trip!

How to use our customise your trip search

Find your flights

Choose where you're flying from first, then add your flights to the destinations you want to visit. You can add up to six flights on British Airways multi-centre trips, which can be short stopovers or longer breaks away. Add your flight, then choose the dates you want to move on to your next destination. Select your flight class and ticket type, then your flights are ready to go.

Pick your hotels

Choose your hotel stay to match your flight destinations. Select your check-in dates to either coincide with your flight arrival and your check-out dates and match your next flight departure. Or choose a hotel for part of your stay. Pick how many rooms you need, then add more hotels in the same way for your other destinations. We will offer three packaged results – recommended, lowest price and luxury. You can select your preferred option and then customise it by selecting a different hotel.

Car hire to suit you

Feeling ready for a road trip? Choose more freedom on your adventure and hire a car for your chance to explore. Select the rental destination for you, whether you want to have a car for each place you visit, or just one destination you go to, the flexibility is yours. Choose to return the car rental to the same location or select a different depot to drop off your car.

The best of travel extras
