Museum of Cardiff

The Museum of Cardiff is the first museum where Cardiffians and visitors alike can discover the story of the city through the eyes of those who know it best – its people.

The perfect place to start your visit to Cardiff!

The museum tells the tale of how Cardiff was transformed from a small market town in the 1300s, to one of the world’s biggest ports in the 1900s, to the cool, cosmopolitan capital we know today.  With activities for all ages, it is housed in one of Cardiff’s most historic buildings – the Old Library – in the heart of the city centre, and is free entry.

The Museum of Cardiff is a great starting point for any visit to Cardiff, and gives an introduction to the city’s history through engaging, interactive displays.  It uses the stories of the people who have lived and worked in the city over past centuries to bring history to life.

The museum runs a full event and temporary exhibition programme – details can be found on our website or by giving us a ring.

National Museum Wales, Cardiff

Visit the museums and art galleries of Wales virtually

The museums of Wales have an excellent online presence with multiple ways to experience what they have to offer from the comfort of your home. There are a host of fascinating learning resources, Google Expeditions and online Art Collection.

Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales

Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales (AC-NMW) is a government sponsored body made up of several of the largest museums in Wales (including the National Museum Cardiff, National Slate Museum and the National Waterfront Museum). As a joint network of valuable cultural institutions they have been able to become the largest provider of learning outside the classroom in Wales.

Blaschka glass models rotating for 40 minutes in 4k!

The Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales YouTube channel alone contains over 100 fascinating videos including this 40 minute video of the Blaschka Glass models rotating in 4k resolution.

Towards the end of the 19th century Leopold Blaschka and his son created these spectacular replicas of bizarre sea creatures by working primarily with glass. In Blaschka's day, museums were just beginning to showcase wildlife found from all over the world as curiosities for their visitors. But due to the difficulty of preserving soft sea creatures for display there was a lack of sea life in these exhibitions.

Blaschka and his son solved this problem by using intricate glass working techniques to recreate these deep sea discoveries. His work was considered a marvel of both the scientific and artistic worlds due to the accuracy of the replications as well as the beauty of the creations. Thanks to Amgueddfa Cymru these can now be viewed online in stunning detail and if that piques your interest you can read more about the Blaschka Glass exhibition on the AC-NMW website .

St Fagans National Museum of History

St Fagans National Museum of History is an award winning open air museum and one of the most popular heritage attractions in Wales. This unique experience was created by transporting and rebuilding over fifty historic buildings from all over Wales to be rebuilt in the castle grounds at St Fagans.

St Fagans National Museum of History, South Wales

A must see attraction is the Rhyd-y-car Terrace. This terrace of six houses was initially constructed in 1795 for miners and their families. They have been rebuilt at St Fagans and furnished to represent six Welsh households at different times in history between 1795 and 1985.

You can read more about the Rhyd-y-car Terrace on the AC-NMW website but thanks to Google Expeditions you can now take a virtual tour of the terrace from your sofa! If you follow  the Google Expedition instructions on the St Fagans website you can download the Expeditions app for free, and then view these houses for yourself. The app provides a virtual reality, first person view of the homes with helpful annotations that explain what you're looking at and really immerses you in the experience.

Art Collections Online

National Museum Cardiff is host to the Welsh national collection of art as well as a large catalogue of works from artists all around the world. This vast collection is exhibited in 15 galleries that tell the story of Welsh and European art over the last 500 years. Thanks to the Davies sisters, this includes the largest selection of French impressionist art outside of Paris. But you can also view this magnificent collection and more online.

National Museum Cardiff, South Wales

The Art Collections Online browser allows you to browse thousands of paintings, drawings, watercolours, photographs and applied art pieces with the push of a button. You can search by the artists or designers if you would like to view their full portfolios or you can search by name if you are looking for a specific piece. Alternatively you can simply refresh the page to get a randomly selected work of art presented for you.

If you have more of an interest in archaeology then you can check out the Collections Online browser for a broader look at all of the items that  Amgueddfa Cymru — National Museum Wales has exhibited online. Try searching 'Roman' for a look at some amazing artefacts from ancient wales.

The Cynon Valley Museum's Exhibition at Home page is another place where local artists can have their work showcased virtually. The powerfully expressive paintings of Lee Shot and the empowering photography of Nigel Whitbread are currently being exhibited. Going forwards this virtual gallery will continue to promote art from the best artists, artisans and crafters from the Cynon Valley and beyond.

Online learning resources

If you're looking to inspire your kids with some educational activities from the museums of Wales then the online catalogues from  Amgueddfa Cymru have everything you will need. The National Roman Legion Museum, for example, offers a selection of ebooks that you can read to learn about things like medicine in Roman times  or what it was like to go to a Roman school .

In addition, the Welsh Museums Federation links page contains the web addresses for over 90 museums, galleries and trusts in Wales. You can browse through these links and interact with the whole group of great Welsh institutions all over the country. Some great examples include the Storiel Museum learning programme of educational sheets and the London to Llantrisant Exhibition  that describes the journey of the Royal Mint from England to Wales.

The Smallest Museum In Wales

Wales may be home to some monumental cultural institutions and distinguished galleries but there is a phone box in Pembrokeshire that proves museums can come in all shapes and sizes. Cilgerran village hosts the smallest museum in Wales and Hiraeth films have produced this short video tour of the phone box gallery to let you take a look inside for yourselves.

Weird Wales Ep 1: The Smallest Museum In Wales

The museum is dedicated to Tom Mathias, a documentary photographer from Cilgerran who was active between the 1880s and 1920s. He mostly worked with portraiture and photographing family and social occasions but he was also a keen naturalist, bee keeper and astronomer. Some of his works have been preserved in this phone box as the smallest museum in Wales and one of the smallest in the world.

Social media collection tours

There are a lot of museums all over Wales who are doing tours of their collections via social media so you can stay engaged wherever you are. The Monmouthshire museums have a collective way to promote their virtual exhibits on the MonLife Heritage Twitter page . You can learn about pieces from the various collections, stay up to date with which grounds and countryside walks are open and get news of film streaming events on other social media platforms too.

The Tenby Museum and Art Gallery Facebook page  regularly showcase favourites from their collection. The Wrexham Museums Facebook page is also running regular updates for social media and they often use their collections to create quizzes for their visitors using mystery items, puzzles and more!

Following these pages is a great way to have interesting pieces of Welsh culture pop up on your feed every day.

The National Museum in Cardiff is one of the finest museums in Wales

The 12 best museums to visit in Cardiff

Castles, churches, galleries and sporting meccas – the best museums in Cardiff are filled with fascinating stories

John Bills

Cardiff may be a relatively young capital in international terms (it became the capital of Wales in 1955). Still, this fascinating city has more than established itself as the best place for checking out art and culture in the country. The best museums in Cardiff are among the best in the UK, covering everything from the history of Wales to Roald Dahl and the future of technology. A wide range, you’ll agree, but Wales has no boundaries.

No trip to Cardiff is complete without exploring the city’s museums. Load up on culture before heading to the many restaurants and bars of the city to discuss everything at length, or maybe to pig out and line up the ales. You do you, Boo.

An email you’ll actually love

Best museums in Cardiff

National Museum Cardiff

1.  National Museum Cardiff

What is it?  Only the finest museum in the entire city

Why go?  The National Museum in Cardiff is equal parts explorative adventure and artistic showcase, with exhibitions showcasing everything from botany to zoology, found rooms away from one of the best collections of modern art in Europe. The museum tells the story of Wales from the Big Bang to the Red Wall, covering a huge amount of ground with character and style. The museum is also free to enter, but do leave a donation if you can.

Cardiff Story Museum

2.  Cardiff Story Museum

What is it?  Exactly what it says on the tin. The story of Cardiff, from the beginning to the now

Why go?  Cardiff can be a difficult city to get a handle on, and understanding its present and future is nigh on impossible without first engaging with its long and storied past. It hasn’t always been the multicultural sports-mad city of chaos and charm that it is today, but it has always been fascinating in its own way. The Cardiff Story Museum is what the name suggests, namely the story of this city throughout the centuries.

Norwegian Church Arts Centre

3.  Norwegian Church Arts Centre

What is it?  A respectful nod to Cardiff Bay’s Scandinavian links with a bit of Roald Dahl history to boot.

Why go?  Re-opened in 1992, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre may well be the cutest church in the city, but there is more to this than brick and mortar. This spot has sacred importance to the legions of Scandinavian sailors who bravely ventured here over the centuries, and it now houses a small gallery and a darling cafe. Roald Dahl was baptised here (Dahl was the son of Norwegians and spoke Norwegian as his first language), and special events take place on his birthday. September 13, if you were wondering.

Cardiff Castle

4.  Cardiff Castle

What is it?  The jewel in Cardiff’s crown, the city’s most popular tourist attraction and a mighty opulent home to boot

Why go?  Let’s face it; if you’re in Cardiff, you’re going to give Cardiff Castle a look. Smack bang in the centre of town, the castle is somewhat unavoidable, although those who decide to give it a miss are only cheating themselves. The rooms of this sumptuous mansion (built for the then-richest man in the world) are as luxurious as they are varied, covering a wide range of architectural and interior design styles with no expense spared. A tour of the castle is one of the best in the country, put bluntly.

St Fagans National Museum of History

5.  St Fagans National Museum of History

What is it?  An open-air museum that is one of the most popular heritage attractions in the country

Why go?  Sat in the sumptuous gardens of St Fagan’s Castle, this open-air love letter to all things Wales covers a vast area and fills it with aplomb, with over 40 buildings showcasing different eras of this nation’s long and storied history. This is the place to explore that story through historic galleries, interactive exhibitions and traditional arts and crafts. Entry is free, and the museum is 11 miles to the west of the city.

6.  Whitewall Galleries

What is it?  A contemporary fine art gallery hiding in the St David’s Centre

Why go?  Whitewall Galleries are found all over the United Kingdom, from Leeds to London, but the one in Cardiff’s St David’s Centre remains the only one in Wales. All the more reason to visit, as the gallery houses a cavalcade of contemporary fine art that will either inspire you to pick up a brush or to pull out the credit card. If neither is an option, admiring the colour and technique on show almost goes without saying.

Techniquest

7.  Techniquest

What is it?  Cardiff Bay’s premier science and discovery centre

Why go?  With a picturesque location on Cardiff Bay, Techniquest is worth a visit for the setting alone. The fact that it offers two floors of creativity, innovation and discovery is a bonus. Techniquest is a science centre that is every bit as exciting for kids as it is engaging and enlightening for adults. The selection of souvenirs is pretty delightful as well.

Cardiff Made

8.  Cardiff Made

What is it?  A community-centric celebration of Cardiff artists of all shapes and sizes

Why go?  The name stands for ‘makers, artists and designers’, if you were wondering. Cardiff Made is where Cardiff artists go to shine brightest, with a Roath location that allows for three exhibitions alongside the shop and workshop area. There is a community focus to Made that deserves applause, but the art on show more often than not speaks for itself, covering a wide range of visual styles without compromising on quality.

Firing Line: Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier

9.  Firing Line: Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier

What is it?  A standalone museum on the grounds of the castle that focuses on the history of Welsh soldiers

Why go?  The clue is in the name. Firing Line is a one-off museum that displays exhibits from the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and the Royal Welsh, two regiments of the British Army that have seen plenty of action over the years. A pair of Victoria Crosses are arguably the museum’s highlight, but this one is as much about atmosphere and aura as the artefacts on show.

Principality Stadium

10.  Principality Stadium

What is it? A must-do tour through the golden history of Welsh rugby

Why go? While not necessarily a museum in the traditional sense, there are few exhibitions and tours that take you right to the heart and soul of Welsh culture like a tour of the Principality Stadium. Rugby is integral to the Welsh experience no matter the results on the pitch, and these guided tours are the perfect way to interact with that history and take some pretty memorable photographs along the way.

Nantgarw China Works

11.  Nantgarw China Works

What is it?  Fully functioning china works with an onsite museum, tearooms and shop selling seriously pretty porcelain.

Why go?  Make time for a brief trip outside Cardiff to go potty over some pottery. Or rather, porcelain - we’re dealing with the posh stuff here, not your chipped cereal bowl. Learn about how perfect plates and delicate dishes are (and were) made at the only remaining nineteenth-century porcelain works in Britain. Free entry.

Martin Tinney Gallery

12.  Martin Tinney Gallery

What is it?  The premier private commercial art gallery in Wales

Why go?  The Martin Tinney Gallery has been at the forefront of commercial art in Wales since its establishment in 1992, and a move to a specially renovated townhouse in 2002 saw it rocket to new heights. The gallery primarily focuses its exhibitions on the most important living Welsh artists with a keen eye on the next generation of stars, making it a tremendous spot to find the pulse of Welsh art in the twenty-first century. Solo exhibitions change every month.

Cool Things about Cardiff Wales

While located within the United Kingdom, Wales is a separate country.

The Welsh people have their unique language, culture, and history.

Less than 5% of the entire United Kingdom’s population lives in Wales.

It’s easy to get around both within the city center and nearby towns – even if you don’t have a car.  We ventured to places by train and bus and found transportation easy, flexible, and accessible.

The best time to visit Cardiff is generally June through September.

The summer months have temperatures that average a modest 66℉.  Such temperatures make tourist activities generally pleasant during summer.  You’ll get the most sun in July.  If you come in November, pack an umbrella as that is the rainiest month.
