The Ultimate Guide to Cruising the Stunning Norwegian Fjords

by Gary Bembridge · July 20, 2012

Do you think that a trip to the Norwegian Fjords sounds like something rather dull?  Even more so if you are on a cruise ship? These are the Ultimate Tips For Cruising Fjords For Travelers!

  • Norway is the north of Europe on the West Coast of the massive Scandinavian Peninsula. Most of its western border is along the North Sea, and most of the east is bordered with Sweden, with Finland at the top.
  • The Fjords were created by massive Glaciers of ice that carved them out of the hard rock, gouging deep channels which are now filled with water. They go as far as 120 miles inland from the sea, and can be 1300 metres deep. They are wide enough for huge cruise ships to sail right into them for many miles. Today there still are glaciers inland, which are popular things to visit both by cruise passengers and land based tourists.
  • Norway’s economy, livelihood and culture is most strongly linked to the sea. Right back to the Vikings that sailed out to explore, plunder and gather spoils across Europe, through to the huge Sardine and fish canning industry, and more recently from Oil and Gas found off shore in the North Sea.
  • Perhaps due to so much linkage to the sea, one thing that struck me travelling around is that there is not a lot of visible “heritage” on land. If you visit many European Countries, you see stately homes, castles, and fortresses all over. This seems less visible and apparent in Norway. It is about the scenery, the sea and the outdoors.
  • Although it is cold and very snowy in Winter, and the Summer Season is quite short, the people of Norway are very outdoor focused and sporty. Waking, hiking and outdoor pursuits are very popular and a big focus for holidays.
  • Norway is very environmentally minded, and aggressively protect the environment. For example, they are the only country in Europe that currently levies a tax on cruise ships in their waters. They tax based on how much fumes are emitted. As a result cruise ships ensure they use high grade fuel and try and reduce emission even more than usual.
  • Norway today has a constitutional monarchy. This was put in place in 1905. Previous to this, they had long periods when they were in a union with Denmark and, before taking independence and putting in place the monarchy, they were in a  long union with Sweden.
  • Politically, Norway is liberal and fiercely protects their independence. in both World Wars they tried to remain neutral. Although in WWI most of their large merchant fleet was used by the British. In WWII although they had declared themselves neutral, the Germans invaded in 1940 and occupied the country – despite fierce resistance.
  • Although they were one of the big proponents f the European Free Trade Area, they are not a member of the European Union (despite holding referendums, the people have rejected joining the EU).
  • If you want more party like and families look at lines like Royal Caribbean ,
  • More sedate, slightly older and more couples look at Cunard
  • For older look at lines like Saga . So many lines go there you can find the right one, but make sure you research and discuss with your agent.
  • You should also consider looking at lines with smaller ships, rather than the large Cunard, P&O and Royal Caribbean sized ships. This means there are more places and options that they can go and explore. So lines like Seabourn , some of the smaller Costa Ships and even the P&O smaller ship Oceana.
  • In all of the ports, you either dock right in the town or for smaller places you go right into the village on the ship tenders. The places are small usually, like Geiranger with only 300 residents and Skjolden with only 250 residents, and so anything that is on offer will be right there when you get off.
  • All of the places are geared for ships arriving and there will either be a tourist office or the people that offer tours ready for when you come off the ship. They will be cheaper and know they need to get you back in time for departure if they are longer trips.
  • Most places also have the Hop On – Hop Off bus tour which is a cost effective way to see all the main sights. For example, in Geiranger they take you to all of the main vantage points to get views.
  • The problem with most of the cruise tours is that they are largely just drive around trips sitting in a bus. It is much better to walk or use the hop on – hop off bus.

So glad you wouldn’t waste money on onboard Internet. I think you get it free in the higher classes on some ships, but it’s not worth a special fee. Personally, cruising is about escaping the phone and the Internet.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! On Cunard you get free Internet hours based on your level in their loyalty program not your stateroom grade, and is plenty enough to do the odd bit if email check-in every second day or so. But agree that switching off is best. The speed is really slow and so it is too frustrating to do much – which also helps one to stay switched off!!!!

Thanks, Gary, for the very detailed articles, photos and video about the 7-day cruise to Norway. It must have taken you a lot of time and effort to put this together; it is appreciated. We are taking an almost identical cruise in June on the Queen Elizabeth. We are fortunate that Flaam is included. We are especially looking forward to riding the famous Flaam-Myrdal railway. Although we have crossed the Atlantic many times on the QE2 and QM2, this will be our first voyage on the QE and, in fact, our first actual cruise on Cunard.

David, Mississauga, Canada

David. Thanks so much for taking a look at the posts, photos and videos – and I am so pleased that you found them helpful! I enjoy doing them, but better knowing that they are helpful to fellow travellers. I am envious of your trip, as it was one of the real highlights of all my travels. Lucky to getting to Flaam.. I need to head back to the region to see some of the stops I did not. Keep me posted on how it goes and any tips you think I should add. Regards, Gary

About our seven-day cruise to Norway on Queen Elizabeth, the best thing I can say is “Wow.” I am a fan of ships, not cruises, but this was one super cruise. About the ship, in which we were travelling in Princess Grill, I can say the layout of the Grills facilities was better than on the Queen Mary 2. The only downside is the stateroom. Although they are the same sq. footage as on the QM2, they are long and narrow and have a tiny balcony. Overall the interior dĂ©cor of the QE was more pleasing to my taste than the QM2. (Transatlantic crossings are still my favourite, so we will be on the QM2 again next year). Flam was gorgeous and the rail trip to and from Myrdal was as spectacular as everyone says. In Geiranger we took a one-hour tour on a replica of a Viking boat. We were issued with smocks, horned helmets and plastic swords and had a great time. This boat carries only 10 people, so it is not offered by Cunard as an excursion. It can be booked through the town’s Tourist Office next to the tender pier.

Thanks for the update and thoughts on your trip.

I think the QE is the best decor of the 3 ships, and I guess they have been learning with each of the new ships. The Transatlantics are special, and am sure you will love it again. We are on the QM2 for 5 weeks next year from Sydney to Dubai. Can’t wait…..!

Cruises , Norway

25 tips on how make the most of your norwegian fjords cruise.

With such spectacular coastal scenery, it’s no surprise that the Norwegian Fjords are a popular destination for a cruise holiday.

With towering mountains, charming villages and deep fjords, this region is a must-see for any traveller.

While a cruise is a perfect way to explore this part of Norway, it is important to be prepared if you would like to make the most of your cruise.

Following my cruise around the fjords , there were a few things I wished I had known in advance. So I’ve put together some Norwegian Fjords cruise tips covering everything from choosing the right itinerary, exploring ports and some packing essentials.

norwegian fjords cruise youtube

Before you book your cruise

With so many fabulous cruise destinations, you might think choosing where to go is the most difficult decision you may have to make when planning your holiday.

Well, yes and no.

Once you’ve decided on your destination, there are a few things that are worth doing before you book so you can make sure you find the perfect cruise for you.

Do your research and choose your itinerary carefully

There are a large number of cruise ports in Norway, even just within the Norwegian Fjords themselves. This means there are many different itineraries offered by cruise lines.

So, it can be a bit hard to decide what to book.

Most cruises to the Norwegian Fjords are a week in duration and stop at four ports. So, you should comfortably see a couple of fjords within that time.

Some cruises have a slightly longer duration and include a few more ports. However, it is unlikely you will find a cruise that covers all ports in one trip.

Before looking into what cruise to book, it is a good idea to do a bit of research on what fjords you would like to see.

Of course, the cruise lines devise their itineraries so that you do see some of the best scenery the Norwegian Fjords has to offer. If that is all you want and are not too worried about what fjords you see, it’s unlikely you will be disappointed.

However, it is still worth having a quick look at where you can visit in the region as you may spot somewhere you’d like to go.

When you look at the different itineraries that are available, it will make it easier to decide which one best suits what you are looking for.

Have a think about the best time to go

Of course, the best time to go on a cruise is whenever you can! That said, cruise lines can only visit some regions during a particular time frame.

The Norwegian Fjords cruise season runs roughly between April and September. This is when most of the main cruise companies visit the area

Although you are restricted to the summer months, you do have some flexibility on when to go.

When deciding your departure date, check back on your research on the ports you would like to visit and what natural landmarks you’d like to see. Some ports are less accessible at the beginning and end of the season.

You don’t want to be booking a cruise at the beginning of the season only to find out it doesn’t stop at that port until a few weeks later.

The exception to this is Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages who sail the coastal route between Bergan and Kirkenes all year round. They offer a different experience to traditional cruise lines in that they are also working ships carrying cargo as well as passengers. So, don’t expect lots of entertainment options onboard. However, you don’t need them as the coastline is the star of the show here.

Compare cruise lines and ships

Many of the main cruise lines visit the Norwegian Fjords so whatever your taste, style or budget you should be able to find the perfect itinerary and ship for you.

Have a look at the different cruise companies, their ships and the itineraries they offer.

Once you have all this information you can do a comparison to work out which cruise line and ship is best for you.

Booking Tips

Once you have settled on the itinerary, cruise line and travel dates, you are almost there. However, there are a few more things to think about as you book your cruise.

Consider booking a balcony cabin

The Norwegian Fjords are probably one of the most scenic destinations you can cruise around. The views are simply breathtaking everywhere you look.

So, if you are ever going to book a balcony cabin on a cruise, this is the place to do it.

Of course, there are plenty of spots on cruise ships where you can get a good view while sailing along the fjords.

But there is nothing quite like waking up in the morning and having a cuppa on your balcony enjoying the scenery as you sail into port. Or having a pre-dinner drink as you sail out of the fjords.

Image of the Norwegian Fjords from a cruise ship balcony. Snow capped mountains either side a body of water

I’m often a solo cruiser so tend to go for inside cabins as they are usually cheaper. Plus I like to be out and about exploring the ship more often than sitting in my cabin. However, for the Norwegians Fjords, I splashed out on a balcony and don’t regret it one bit.

Book a mid-ship cabin if you suffer from seasickness

Sailing around the Norwegian Fjords is usually a flat, calm and pleasant experience.

However, depending on where you depart from, there may be a risk of it being a bit choppy on your way to Norway.

On today’s cruise ships, particularly the bigger ones, you don’t feel too much movement thanks to stabilizers that help to reduce the rolling motion.

If you are sensitive to movement or fear you may suffer from seasickness then it is best to go for a cabin mid-ship and low down. These areas usually have the least movement on board.

Don’t forget to get some travel insurance

Before you cruise, make sure you have the right travel insurance.

I know, insurance. It’s really boring, right?  Well yes, but it is also a necessity.

It is easy to think you won’t need to use it or it is a waste of money. However, you never know what might happen. And if something does happen you will be very glad you had it.

Some cruise lines will not let you travel without the right insurance so make sure you have the right cover for your trip before you travel.

Check your mobile contract and data roaming options

You’ll probably want to use your mobile phone at some point while on your cruise. Whether that is to keep in touch with friends and families back home or if you want to look something up while travelling.

Before you leave, check the roaming options on your phone. Do you have any included in your contract? If so, what country or regions does it cover? If not, can you add any options or bolt ons for the duration of your cruise?

When on the ship, keep your phone in airplane mode to avoid any unexpected charges.

If you do need to keep in touch while at sea, look into the wifi packages offered by your cruise line. These can be quite expensive, particularly for a whole cruise so it is worth thinking about how much you will really use wifi

  • Are you going to be on the ship the whole time or do you have lots of ports on the itinerary where you will be off the ship for large parts of the day?
  • Do you want to be able to send and receive messages at all times?
  • Do you check social media regularly?
  • Or do you fancy being not contactable for a while?

On my last couple of cruises, I used the local networks when in port as my mobile provider includes the region I was in. For sea days, I either had a break from the phone or bought a 24 hour wifi package. This worked out much better value than buying a package for the whole cruise.

Packing Tips

Packing for a Norwegian Fjords cruise can be a bit of a challenge . I know, you are probably thinking what, you are on a cruise ship, it can’t be that difficult?

Yes, it can!

Here are a few tips to make it a little easier. Or at least some things to consider and suggestions on items to pack.

Pack for all weather eventualities

Most fjord cruises are at least a week long and you never quite know what weather you might get.

By their nature fjords can be quite wet so you can probably expect some rain at some point. If you are lucky, you may get a sunny week but this is by no means guaranteed.

I was very fortunate the week I visited and had two days of very hot temperatures and sunny skies. Yet the weeks on either side of my cruise were both damp and rainy. So it is potluck really.

By packing for all eventualities – rain or hot weather, you should be covered!

Pack layers

As mentioned above, you could see different weather throughout the day. If you pack items you can layer up or down that should give you the option of wrapping up or stripping off depending on the weather and temperature.

For example, if you plan to get up early for the sail in you will probably need to wrap up as even in the height of summer if it can be quite chilly and breezy first thing in the morning. However, by the afternoon you could be in the middle of a hot sunny day. Completely the opposite of first thing in the morning.

Bring some comfortable shoes

Whether you do lots of shore excursions or spend most of your time on the ship, you’ll be doing a fair bit of walking.

So comfy shoes are a must!

Even the mid-sized cruise ships are pretty big and you can end up having to do a lot of walking to reach the facilities and amenities.

Many shore excursions at ports in the fjords will often involve a bit of walking (or even hiking) too.

From exploring the countryside, mountain landscapes and glaciers, you can expect to be on your feet for a large part of the day.

Don’t forget your sunglasses

Whether your eyes are sensitive to the light or not, it is worth popping a pair of sunglasses into your luggage.

The sun can reflect off the water and snow making it very bright at times. Having your sunglasses with you will help take the edge of the glare.

Or your waterproofs

Chances are you may see some rain or at least some damp weather in the fjords.

Pack a light rain jacket so that if the weather is not great, you can still get out and about on deck and in port without worrying too much about getting soaked.

Or your hat, gloves and scarf

I know, you are probably thinking, what are you talking about, why would I need a hat and gloves in the summer?

Trust me on this. If you plan to get up early for the sail into the fjords, you might be surprised at how cold and windy it can be. I know I was.

I visited Olden on what was one of the hottest days of the year so far back in 2022. Being on deck from 4.30am gave no indication of the day to come. It was freezing!

After three or four hours on deck enjoying the scenery as we made our way into Olden, I looked like I had spent a few hours in the arctic. That was with a hat and gloves. Next time I’d take a scarf too!

What to do on a Norwegian Fjords cruise

Get up early for the sail into the fjords.

If there is one thing you do on your cruise around the Norwegian Fjords, it should definitely be this. Even if it is the only thing you do!

I know getting up in the early hours is not very appealing, especially if you have had a late night or can’t sleep thanks to the long light evenings but trust me, it will be worth it.

It really is a magical experience sailing along the fjords as the day breaks.

Most of your fellow passengers probably won’t get up or will just have a peek from their balcony so you may find you have a lot of the deck space to yourself…and maybe a few other hardy souls.

Image of the Norwegian Fjords from a cruise ship balcony. Snow capped mountains either side a body of water

Find the best viewing spot on the ship

Once you’ve got yourself settled in your cabin, go out and explore the ship. While wandering around make a note of any areas you like on deck or inside that might make a good viewing spot when sailing through the fjords.

Then when you are actually there you won’t have to run round trying to find somewhere. You’ll already know the good locations.

If embarkation day is a bit chaotic and you don’t get a chance to wander, you still have some time. Depending on where you sail from, it is likely you’ll have a sea day before you get to Norway. This will give you plenty of time to explore the ship and check out potential viewing spots.

Head to an aft bar for the sail out

Most cruise ships will have an outside bar (or two) at the aft of the ship. I’ve always found this a nice spot to watch the sail out from a port, especially if the weather is great. There is nothing quite like watching the mesmerizing wake view and land disappearing into the distance. Especially with a cocktail, soft drink or cuppa in hand!

While sailing in and out of the fjords, you have a good few hours of breathtaking scenery on either side of you. So aft bars are a great spot to get an a full view.

But don’t miss the sail away from Olden

With gleaming glaciers, sparkling lakes and awe-inspiring mountain viewpoints on its doorstep Olden is one of the highlights of a Norwegian Fjords Cruise.

If that wasn’t enough, the locals give each cruise ship a memorable send-off. I won’t spoil it too much but if you do visit Olden on your cruise, make sure you head somewhere on the ship where you overlook the dock when it’s time to leave.

Small village at end of fjord water surrounded by snow capped mountains

Try to get a window table for dinner

You’ll most likely be sailing out of the fjords during the evening.

So, for fjord views as you dine ask for a table by the window in the restaurants if you can.

Everyone will probably be asking the same thing but you never know. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. It might just be your lucky night.

Alternatively, try the buffet. Many cruise ship buffets have floor-to-ceiling windows and you can sit where you like. So if you time it right you should be able to get a good view while you eat.

Ask for a blanket if you want to sit on your balcony

Even as you sail slowly through the fjords, it can be surprisingly chilly and breezy.

If you plan to sit out on your balcony, ask your cabin steward for a blanket. You can then wrap this around you, keeping nice and warm as you take in the scenery.

I think my cabin steward was a bit surprised when I asked as it was something like 24 degrees outside. However, early the next morning as I sat on the balcony nice and toasty I was very grateful for the huge blanket they had found me!

Tips for exploring ports

One of the best things about cruising is exploring the destinations. The Norwegian Fjords are no exception with some amazing things to do and see in almost all ports.

Don’t stay on the ship

This probably sounds obvious but do get off the ship if you can. You don’t necessarily have to book shore excursions or go and do something adventurous like kayaking around the fjords.

Most ports are incredibly scenic and you can stroll around taking in the views without venturing too far from the ship.

Research what there is to do in each port before you go

When you have confirmed your itinerary, have a quick look at what you can see and do in each port. This will then help you decide if you would like to do some shore excursions or not.

Book your shore excursions as soon as you can

If you do decide to do some shore excursions, book early to avoid disappointment.

While cruise lines put on a wide range of excursions, there are limited places. Popular excursions can sell out quickly.

So, if there is anything you really really want to do, book early.

You can usually book in advance of departure via you cruise lines website or app (if they have one). Once onboard, there will also be a shore excursions desk you can visit.

Consider using local tour operators

In many ports, local tour operators will offer similar excursions. These can often be cheaper and in some cases, you will also be helping to put money back into the local economy.

If you do decide to take an excursion with one of these operators, remember it is your responsibility to get back to the ship in time. Don’t expect the ship to wait for you if you are late.

Build in some time to wander around the port

Whether you take an organised excursion or not, try to build in some time to wander around the port and the surrounding area.

If you are in port on sunday, be aware things may be closed

If you dock on a Sunday, you may find many local shops and amenities are closed. It might be worth considering an excursion if this is the case.

The last word

The Norwegian Fjords make for a fantastic cruise holiday. The scenery is just so beautiful and the hospitality from Norway is heartwarming.

Following these tips will help you make the most of your cruise and have an unforgettable time in the Norwegain Fjords.

Remember to choose your itinerary carefully, pack some waterproof clothes and perhaps most importantly, make sure you enjoy the the magic of the fjords.

Hi Emma I’m looking to take my daughter 15 on a NF cruise ext month but my question is something different – would you cruise from Southampton for Christmas on MSC Euribia and would you recommend going at a time when you can’t use the outside of the ship because it will be too cold? Thank you in advance from Rachel.

Hi Rachel, I’ve not cruised on MSC (yet) or at Christmas so a little hard for me to say. That said I definitely have a Christmas cruise on my travel wish list. I don’t think not being able to use the outside is a huge issue as there will be plenty to do inside. Enjoy your cruise if you go.

6 Unmissable Attractions In Olden, The Norwegian Fjords

Adventure Travel , Europe , Norway , Travel | October 9, 2018

This is a sponsored post. While I'm Young uses affiliate links.

I recently explored the magnificent Norwegian Fjords with P&O Cruises and got to experience some of their most popular shore excursions in Olden, one of our ports of call.

Olden, Norway is a tranquil village nestling at the southern end of one branch of the  Nordfjord and at the entrance to the stunning Oldedalen Valley.

We had a lot of fun and found lots of unique things to do in Olden.

The shore excursions available there range from high-speed activities to once-in-a-lifetime visits to almost other-worldly natural attractions.

What to do in Olden on a Norwegian Fjords cruise

It’s a destination where you can eat lunch at an elegant restaurant in the sky, then find yourself gazing at a real-life glacier a few hours later.

Where you can enjoy a stroll around the waters’ edge, spend hours chatting to a local fisherman, or get out on the water to truly immerse yourself in the scenery.

In case you’re ever lucky enough to drop anchor in this Norwegian port, I’ve put together a list of the best things to do in Olden and the cruise ship excursions that take you there.

6 Best Things To Do In Olden, Norway

Visiting the Norwegian Fjords? Check out the mammoth selection of excursions and activities available to book on GetYourGuide . GYG is a reputable site and you can cancel any time.

Watch my Norway travel video on Youtube

You can read my post about what to do in Geiranger , the other port I explored, for inspiration if you’re thinking of booking a Norwegian Fjords cruise.

If you’re looking to visit the Norwegian Fjords from Oslo, check out this incredible tour . There are over 1,700 excellent reviews!

But now, here’s my pick of the best shore excursions and things to do in Olden, Norway.

1. Take a rib ride across the fjord

Best things to do in Olden, Norway: a rib ride

Disembark at Loen cruise terminal and you can climb straight into another, smaller, vessel. I donned a cosy onesie and hopped into an inflatable RIB boat to roar across the fjord.

The high-speed ride is a thrilling adventure on the aquamarine water, reaching speeds of up to 30 knots.

Perhaps best of all for cruise lovers, you can enjoy a new perspective of the cruise ship you just got off from the water below.

We were lucky enough to spot some baby whales during our ride, and the views of the village and mountains beyond are incredible.

2. Catch crayfish – and eat them!

Cray fishing in Olden, Norway

Fancy catching some snacks out on the RIB? We caught crayfish with our captain during the boat ride and once back onshore, the captain cooked our catch in a traditional lavvo tent on the banks of Nordfjord.

We toasted our catch with crisp white wine then retreated into the warmth of the old flour mill by the fjord for our meal.

Huddled around a big wooden table, we were given a candlelit de-shelling lesson from the pro and passed the shellfish around the group.

It’s amazing how something so simple can be SO delicious, and this was a really cosy, memorable experience that I definitely recommend.

3. Ride the Loen Skylift

Best things to do in Olden, Norway: Norwegian Fjords cruise excursions

In the sleepy village of Loen, we boarded the Loen Skylift Cable Car to ascend the 1011m up Mount Hoven in just five minutes for some of the most stunning fjord, mountain and village views in the whole of Norway.

From the skylift, you can see a surreal view of the calm glacial waters of the fjord into the Lodalen Valley and Kjenndalen.

Try to do this on a clear day for the best views!

4. Hike on Mount Hoven

Hiking in Olden, Norway

From May to October when the weather permits, Mount Hoven is a hiker’s paradise.

Ride the skylift to the the top and then choose one of the easy short hiking trails like Mt. Skredfjellet, Jølrunden or Mt. Skredfjellet.

If you don’t want to go by foot, I’m told the mountain will soon  have zip-lining and paragliding on offer for adrenaline junkies.

5. Eat lunch in the sky

Best place to eat in Loen, Norwegian Fjords

Ah, my favourite part of Hove: its restaurant!

The glass panelled eatery in the clouds gives diners panoramic views over the fjord below, and the food is exquisite, particularly the rainbow trout.

For afters, try the ‘Suspension Bridge Waffle’, a calorific, indulgent dessert served with brown goats cheese caramel ice cream.

This may be the best waffle I’ve ever eaten – and I’ve been to Belgium. Their hot chocolates are also divine.

There’s even a ‘messy’ area at the side of the restaurant for muddy hikers, complete with a cosy fire and blankets.

I would happily have hidden there for the day!

6. Ride a troll car to a glacier

How to see Briksdal Glacier in Norway's fjords

We poured into open ‘troll cars’ which took us through the national park, past thundering waterfalls towards the vast, million-years-old Briksdal Glacier.

We then got off the troll cars and walked through the valley to the foot of the Briksdal Glacier, which is one of the offshoots of the vast Jostedal Glacier.

This impressive wonder of nature won’t be there forever, so see it before it’s gone.

In fact, there are signs marking the glacier’s rapidly retreating position over the years. You wouldn’t believe how much it’s shrank since the 1950s!

At the place where the troll cars depart, there’s a large gift shop and cafe for coffee and pastries, if you need to warm up or buy souvenirs from Norway.

Why You Should Book Shore Excursions When You Cruise

Despite the amount of activities I packed in, I felt surprisingly relaxed in Norway – a feeling that lingered long after my trip.

I think that’s partly because I’d spent so much time immersed in nature, and partly because the excursions I did meant I didn’t have to worry about a thing.

I’ve discovered the beauty of cruise excursions is that as well as ensuring you see and do the best things in a destination, they also erase the stress of planning, keeping track of time and keeping yourself safe.

The variety of excursions available with P&O Cruises means that you truly can tailor your holiday to suit your tastes, with plenty of fast-paced adventures for the adrenaline junkies and ample choice of more relaxed, cultural activities for those who prefer to simply unwind when they cruise.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise Explained

Packing for a Norwegian Fjords cruise can be tricky, especially if it’s your first time. On our first Norwegian Fjords cruise we found it particularly difficult to pack, so we created this guide to help you decide  what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise .

Cruise Ship Dress Code

Firstly, it’s good to know your cruise line’s dress code. This will help you to pack the right clothes for the ship itself. There are a number of cruise lines that offer Norwegian Fjords cruises from the UK. Take a look at the dress codes by cruise line:

  • Ambassador Cruise Line dress code
  • Azamara dress code
  • Celebrity Cruises dress code
  • Cunard Line dress code
  • Fred.Olsen Cruise Lines dress code
  • MSC Cruises dress code
  • Norwegian Cruise Line dress code
  • P&O Cruises dress code
  • Princess Cruises dress code
  • Royal Caribbean International

Dress codes differ between cruise lines and some are more formal than others, make sure you check before packing for your cruise.

We took a Norwegian Fjords cruise with Princess Cruises and found that the dress code was quite relaxed. As long as you looked smart on a formal night, you did not look out of place.

To find out whether a Norwegian Fjords cruise with Princess Cruises is right for you, read our review now.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise – Sea Days

Sea days on a Norwegian Fjords cruise are likely to be at the beginning and end of your cruise. The weather can vary depending on the time of year. If you’re unsure of the weather and what to wear on a Norwegian Fjords cruise, pack layers.

Shoulder Season

If you’re cruising to the Norwegian Fjords in the shoulder months (April, May, June and September) the North Sea is likely to be cloudy with patches of sunshine. You’re going to need to wear layers and ensure you have a warm jumper.

You’ll spend a lot of time inside the ship, so t-shirts, jumpers and jeans are definitely worth packing.

norwegian fjords cruise youtube

Summer Season

The best weather is likely to be in July and August, so on a sea day, you could wear a short sleeved t-shirt with a lightweight sweater if it gets a little chilly. It’s still likely to be a bit breezy outside.

You may want to pack a swimming costume for the pool or hot tub.

Olden cruise port

Winter Season

On a winter Norwegian Fjords cruise, you are going to need thermal layers and a warm coat if you decide to venture out on to the open decks. Hats and gloves are essential to ensure you stay warm.

You’re likely to spend most of your time inside the cruise ship so jeans, t-shirts and jumpers are suitable to pack.

What to Wear on a Norwegian Fjords Cruise – Shore Excursions

A Norwegian Fjords cruise has a heavy focus on getting outside and enjoying the scenery. Once the cruise ship reaches the Norwegian Fjords, you’re likely enjoy a combination of exploring the ports and scenic cruising.

what to wear in Norway on a cruise

Your cruise will offer organised shore excursions or you may decide to do your own thing once you get to a port. Either way, there’s likely to be an element of walking involved and therefore comfortable walking shoes are necessary.

Try to avoid wearing new shoes you haven’t worn in. High heels are definitely not recommended, especially in small towns that have cobblestone streets. Ballet flats or trainers would be good options in local towns.

what to wear on a norwegian fjords cruise in port

Some excursions involve walking or hiking and for these we’d recommend walking shoes or supportive trainers. If you’re planning a boat excursion, pack a warm coat.

On a Norwegian Fjords cruise, you can experience sunshine and rain in the same day so we’d suggest packing a lightweight raincoat, even in the summer months. Western Norway is known to be one of the wettest places in the world.

pack a waterproof jacket and walking shoes for a Norwegian Fjords cruise

A small backpack  or crossover bag is useful for excursions to carry small items such as: a water bottle, hat, camera and personal items.

We’d recommend taking a look at our 40 tips to enjoy a Norwegian Fjords cruise , which includes other essentials to pack.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Geirangerfjord is known as the “crown jewel” of the country’s fjords, contrasting steep waterfalls with snow-peaked mountain caps. Go slightly off-the-beaten path to neighboring Hjørundfjord, where activities like fjord fishing and kayaking will captivate you.

Art & History

Explore Oslo’s famous Viking Ship Museum and see three expertly preserved vessels. Spend a while at the Munch Museum, dedicated to the painter Edvard Munch, known best for his painting “The Scream.” In Bergen, Bryggens Museum is a mighty testament to life in the town before a devastating fire in 1955, where excavations uncovered beautiful reminders of everyday Norwegian life. Bergen is also home to its own art museum that uniquely preserves the homes of famous composers throughout history. Time travel at Sunnmøre Museum in Alesund, an open-air exhibit featuring preserved homes and boats dating back to medieval times.

Craft Breweries

Norway’s distilleries and craft microbrewing scene is rapidly growing in cities like Bergen and Alesund. After decades of mostly serving lagers, microbrewers around the country wanted to offer more variety for beer drinkers, so they started to brew their own IPAs, pale ales, and stouts. Ever since, Norway’s cities have brewed hundreds of their own unique drafts. Unwind after a day’s hike and try something new on the menu.

Featured Ports

Bergen, norway.

Rows of deep red, burnt orange, and white houses near Bryggen Wharf is one of the top sights in the city. Enjoy a romantic wharfside meal or a cozy coffee there before you visit Bryggens Museum or St. Mary’s Church. Ride a funicular rail to the summit of Mt. Fløyen for incredible panoramic views of the city below. Explore the surrounding fjords on an unforgettable kayaking or hiking adventure.

Alesund, Norway

On a Norway cruise, you’ll visit the picturesque town of Alesund, frequently cited as one of the country’s most beautiful places to visit. Spend a leisurely day exploring the Art Nouveau District. Hike up nearly 500 steps to Aksla Viewpoint and admire the stunning vistas of the archipelago and breathtaking fjords beyond. The town is also the gateway to Geirangerfjord, one of Norway’s most famous natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nestled between imposing cliffs on all sides.

Oslo, Norway

Let Oslo’s metropolitan atmosphere energize you as you explore its opulent palaces and incredible museums. The capital of Norway is teeming with Viking history, from ships dating back to the 9th century at the Viking Museum to 17th-century art at the National Museum. Art lovers won’t want to miss seeing Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” in person. When you move on from historic wonders, grab a craft beer or sample local salmon at any of Oslo’s trendy eateries.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. But Christmas is a time of miracles, so if a Hallmark Channel Christmas experience on the high seas sounds like your dream come true, sign up for the waiting list as soon as you can!

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.
