His most recent documentary, AFTERLIFE, tackles the fascinating subject of near-death experiences and interviews scientists who have researched proof of a life after death. The painting was hidden beneath a nun's bed for 30 years and was rediscovered in 2005. He taught magazine writing at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, and was Executive Editor at American Health magazine, a winner of the National Magazine Awards for General Excellence. How Ken Kesey's LSD-fuelled bus trip created the psychedelic 60s

F lush with funds from the success of his debut novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest , Ken Kesey, then 29, drew up plans in 1963 to drive a bus across the US to the World's Fair in New York. In June 1964, an exotically painted 1939 Harvester school bus rolled out of his ranch in La Honda, California. This was to be no ordinary journey. Kesey's Beat Generation associate Neal Cassady – the inspiration for Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road – was driving the bus they called Further. On board were half a dozen travellers who called themselves the Merry Pranksters and a jar of orange juice laced with LSD. The trip, immortalised in Tom Wolfe's book The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test , would become the mythologised starting point of the psychedelic 60s.

"The trip had a dual purpose," said Wolfe. "One was to turn America on to this particular form of enlightenment, the other was to publicise [Kesey's] new book, Sometimes A Great Notion . Kesey was a great writer. It was too bad he abandoned writing but I think he meant it when he said, 'I'm tired of waiting for an echo, I want to be a lightning rod'."

The footage shot on the cross-country odyssey was considered unusable and duly forgotten. But in a new documentary, Magic Trip: Ken Kesey's Search for a Kool Place , released in America last Friday, film-makers Alison Ellwood and Alex Gibney have constructed a coherent film from it. "It's like watching a fuse being lit," says Gibney, who won an Oscar for Taxi to the Dark Side , a 2007 documentary about America's use of torture during interrogation. "The be-ins hadn't happened yet, but you can see they're filled with idealism, playfulness and curiosity. You can see them making it up – or at least Ken Kesey is making it up. He's already myth-making."

The durability of that myth, of course, is rooted in American ideals of freedom. Carolyn Garcia, aka Mountain Girl, the prankster who would later marry Jerry Garcia of the rock band the Grateful Dead, says Kesey felt that a film of the bus trip would spread the gospel of freedom through LSD. "They didn't know they were starting the 60s, obviously, but they knew they had a big secret and they were going to exploit it to the full."

While the bus trip became the stuff of legend, the film record of it languished at Kesey's ranch, rotting and disordered, until Ellwood and Gibney discovered it existed from a New Yorker article by former prankster Robert Stone in 2004. The film-makers contacted Kesey's widow and son Zane and struck a deal.

After restoration at the University of California , funded in part by Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation, Ellwood and Gibney set to work. "Considering none of those guys knew how to use cameras, it was pretty amazing when it started to come together," Ellwood says. Unlike most historical documentaries, Magic Trip does not cut away to the reminiscences of ageing participants. Instead, it uses interviews Kesey made a decade after the trip. "It was a way to get on the bus and stay on the bus," says Ellwood.

At the centre of the action is Kesey, a former wrestler and amateur puppeteer who had signed up for research into the effects of LSD. Whereas the LSD-advocating psychologist Timothy Leary (whom the pranksters visited, tripping) gave them a cool reception, believing that it should be restricted to an elite, Kesey wanted the drug – then still legal – to be widely available. Under the effects of LSD, he had discovered the world was a hole filled with jewellery. It was a vision he wished everyone might share.

"Kesey was all about fun and freedom that comes out of the great American tradition," Gibney says. "That's why they were all dressed up in red, white and blue shirts." From a creative standpoint, Kesey later explained, his use of film was in part to find out if people talk in life as they do in novels. "They don't," he concluded.

Nearly half a century later, the Merry Pranksters' exploits look endearingly innocent. In one scene, Cassady, high on amphetamines and speaking in the stream-of-consciousness hipster jive that so impressed his fellow Beats, drives the bus through Phoenix backwards while the pranksters blow their trumpets and horns in mock support of the Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater. "It was more haphazard than planned," says Ellwood. "Kesey knew something had to shift." He set about equipping the pranksters, none of whom had any experience with cinematography, with 16mm cameras and tape recorders that ran off the bus's unpredictable voltage.

"He had firm ideas about what he wanted his group of helpers to be doing and he knew he wanted to make films," Garcia says. "I think he hoped to re-create visions he'd had while he was in the psychedelic research project at the hospital. He wanted to re-create those experiences with film without having to resort to words. This was not a short-term thing for him. But making films in those days was expensive and difficult to pull off if you didn't have actors or a script to follow. So things didn't always work out the way he wanted them to."

Kesey's son, Zane, was four at the time and recalls the terror of travelling atop the bus on the mountainous coast road from Oregon to California as Cassady steered it wildly. "They had ambitions as performing artists," he says. "Dad knew he and the pranksters were doing something fun and something the world could enjoy if they could document it well enough. But they were absolute amateurs and they were high. At best, the footage is hard to wade through."

The task of assembling the footage into a film eluded Kesey, who died in 2001. But even incomplete, the "miles of bouncing, ricocheting, blazing film" that Wolfe recalled in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was still significant in establishing the counterculture, although Wolfe disputes the idea that the 60s started with the bus trip. "It actually started with the arrival of the Beatles in New York. When they arrived at Kennedy [airport] I could see all the boys running down the halls combing their hair forward. That's when the 60s really began," he says.

"When they came home they showed the movie and that became a party," explains Zane. "They did it again and it became an Acid Test. Then too many people started coming so they rented a place and bands [the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane] started to come and play. So it was very much a part of how the 60s were born ."

After Cassady drove the bus off the road in Arizona, Kesey dosed the party with LSD. They tipped model paint into a stream, then dipped a T-shirt in it to create the tie-dyed effect that would become associated with San Francisco's incipient Haight-Ashbury hippy scene. Throughout, Kesey guides the action like a ringmaster, participating but also directing. "Dad would say acid is not for everybody but if you can handle it there are things to be learnt," says Zane.

Garcia, who joined the pranksters after being picked up by Cassady in Palo Alto in California, and later had a daughter with Kesey, says that the Magic Trip also marked the start of a remarkable period of creativity. "Music just poured out of the different scenes," Garcia recalls. "We couldn't see what was going on in London but we knew fashion was going wild and people were having these things they called 'happenings'."

For Kesey, though, the role of prophet began to take its toll. "It was not what he planned," says Garcia. "He was thinking of one summer and suddenly it turned into a lifestyle. People didn't want to leave. He had to deal with the aftermath of the bus trip for a long time."

When the authorities woke up to the counterculture movement, Kesey became a target of police harassment. In 1966, he fled to Mexico to avoid trial on marijuana charges.

Though he may have distanced himself, Kesey never rejected the psychedelic 60s outright. He would say he would accept all the negative aspects of the 60s if he could also take the positive.

Carolyn Garcia echoes that sentiment. "For all the harsh realities – we didn't have any money, the bus was always breaking down, there was a lot of foolishness, and sometimes people would triple-dose and have a really hard time – I'd like people to recognise the unbridled, goofy joy of the times. We had a heck of a lot of fun."

The harsh reality behind the Merry Pranksters 'Magic Trip'

So much has been written about the sixties, sometimes it's hard to tell myth from reality. Such is the case with the story of Ken Kesey and the Merry Band of Pranksters.

In 1964 they took a storied bus trip from California to New York and back. Some see it as the launching point of the psychedelic era. A new documentary opening in the Twin Cities this weekend uses the Pranksters' own film to reveal the trip's disappointing reality.

"Magic Trip" opens with a question: "When did the sixties begin?" intones the narrator.

As an answer, it shows a young man beside a large cherry bomb, striking a match.

"In 1964, this man, Ken Kesey lit the fuse for the explosion that started the sixties."

Author Ken Kesey was riding high after the publication of his novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", but he and some friends were restless. They wanted to rediscover America.

"We weren't old enough to be beatniks, and we were a little too old to be hippies," Kesey says in the film. "Everybody I knew had read "On the Road." It stirred us up, so we decided to travel across the country. Because there were so many of us we decided to buy a bus."

The self-named Merry Band of Pranksters painted the bus with garish colors, equipped it with a public address system, and set out to drive from California to the Worlds Fair in New York.

They were particularly excited to have Neal Cassady as their driver, the real-life model for the "On the Road" character Dean Moriarty. They also brought a supply of mind-altering drugs, including LSD.

Tom Wolfe wrote about the trip in his book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test", and it attained mythic status as a pivotal moment in the cultural changes rocking the United States.

"I was interested in the sort of reality from which the myth was created, I mean from a long time all we had was the myth, 'Magic Trip,' " co-director Alex Gibney said.

Oscar-winning documentarian Alex Gibney says the Pranksters filmed and audio taped much of what happened on the bus.

"And what is interesting about the film is you can see the more prosaic reality from whence it came," he said.

Gibney got the entire archive which had been found in a barn in Oregon. But he and his co-director Alison Ellwood faced a huge challenge.

They had 50 priceless hours of film and 150 hours of audio tapes, captured by very good cameras and microphones. But that thing filmmakers do with the clapperboard at the beginning of a shot to synchronize images and sounds — well, the Pranksters felt that was unnecessary.

"They didn't do the clap. Ever," Gibney said.

"Once!" interjects Ellwood.

"Sorry, they did it once," Gibney corrects himself. "And that was when they brought in a professional soundman for the day, who promptly quit when he saw how disorganized everything was."

They went to great efforts to find places where the sound matched up with the images.

"We hired a lip-reader to come in and spent half a day and they gave up," Ellwood said.

They found some synch points, including a wild sequence where Cassady drove the bus while high on speed. Listening to music on huge headphones Cassady raps into the on-board public address system, waving his arms and howling into the microphone, only occasionally looking at the road. Gibney admits it's quite frightening.

"Yeah, and what's even more terrifying is how comfortable the Pranksters were with him driving. I mean they felt completely safe," he laughs.

"And ironically, he didn't even legitimate drivers license," Ellwood adds.

Cassady drove for three days straight at one point, stopping only for gas.

Others on the trip fared less well as a diet of psychedelic drugs brought them to the edge of madness. There were other strange encounters along the way, with famous people such as Jack Kerouac, and LSD guru Timothy Leary. Neither went terribly well. The World's Fair disappointed the Pranksters too.

Gibney says "Magic Trip" is a window on a moment in history and despite the rough spots, the ideals Kesey espoused which came to inspire a generation still shine through.

"Kesey's ideas about freedom, about play, about magic are still very important and interesting," he says.

In 1964 people were scared after the Cuban Missile Crisis and the assassination of President Kennedy, Alison Elwood said.

"Ken was about, and the Pranksters were about, 'Leave the fear behind and explore. You've got to get out of the shelter and explore,' Elwood said. "And I think that that is relevant today. Very much so."

There have been previous attempts to make a movie from the footage. The Pranksters edited a version that was 30 hours long. Only Neal Cassady stayed awake for the whole of it.

Tips to find cheap bus tickets

2. Travel during off-peak hours

I have many talents, but driving is not one of them. I’ve never been given a driver’s license, so I’ve been forced to travel by bus in the USA. Although it’s maybe not “cool” to travel by buses around the United States, taking Greyhound buses and Megabus is often a good cheap way to travel around the USA.

Keep reading for my recommendations for the bus companies in the United States, reviews of different bus companies in the US, what to know about bus travel in the United States, and what to bring on long bus trips in the United States.

Should you travel by bus in the US?

Yes, and no. If your trip around the United States is focused on city hopping, especially within one region (e.g. East Coast), traveling by bus in the United States is a good choice.. It’s often cheaper and easier not to have a car in big cities in the United States as parking can add up. However, it depends a lot on the city as some cities have great public transportation system while others have terrible public transportation systems.

If you’re planning on focusing on the beautiful National Parks, you’re going to have difficulty getting around more rural areas of the US without a lot of money spent on taxis. Some National Parks have better infrastructure in terms of getting there without a car (e.g. Yosemite), but many parks are quite rural and require extra time/money to get there without a car. It might make sense to take a bus for some legs of your journey and do tours once you’re within a city. This will be cheaper than all-inclusive options.

Bus travel in the United States is far more sustainable than traveling by car around the United States. People love to write about road trips, but bus travel is way more eco-friendly! Similarly, not everyone can afford a car or it doesn’t make sense to drive into another big city.

As a result, I think that travel by bus around the US can be a great option for those on a budget, anyone who’s into sustainable travel, and for those who don’t want to have to bother with driving in big American cities.

Bus travel in the United States is often not as advertised online in terms of wifi and on-board entertainment. Although many bus companies are interested in creating more premium experiences and improving the average bus experience, my experiences traveling by bus in the United States has been gritty and unglamorous. This has been the case for my husband too. ( What did you think you were getting when you paid $25 for a 8 hour bus across the country?)

National bus companies in the United States

You’ll encounter a lot of bus companies in the United States although many are regional bus lines that I haven’t personally encountered. Most of the time, unless it’s a major American holiday, bus travel doesn’t require significant planning beyond a day or two in advance. American buses tend to be cheaper if you book way in advance with a major company (e.g. Greyhound or Megabus) while regional bus rates tend to rise less closer to the dates.

Greyhound is the most ubiquitous bus company in the United States. Among the bus companies, the opinions about Greyhound buses online tends to be more favorable although most people I know who regularly take Greyhounds aren’t their biggest cheerleaders. The coverage of Greyhound buses is good across the country and you can get across the United States on a Greyhound on the drop of a hat.

However, you will probably have numerous stop-offs in various cities, which can add some time. However, it’s possible to get to Yosemite with a Greyhound, which is why if you’re traveling in the United States without a car. It’s often best to buy Greyhound tickets at least two weeks in advance and they have special deals if you buy online.

It’s basically very hard to get a $1 fare on Megabus at this point, but you can get some good deals on Megabus if you book ahead. I started taking Megabus when it got started. At this point, Megabus tends to be standard and their concept is getting you there. The demographic for Megabus is considerably younger than Greyhound and you’ll find a lot of students taking Megabus.

Megabus tend to be stricter about bag sizes although they more uniformly have working outlets on their buses. Coverage for Megabus is best on the East Coast, Midwest, and between college towns in the United States. They also have some coverage on the West Coast.

My husband has sworn off Megabus after the wheels almost caught on fire and the driver told the passengers it wasn’t safe to continue. He was forced to wait in the middle of nowhere waiting for a new bus to come pick them up. A couple of other friends have similar stories although I generally take Megabus given the choice as I find people are a bit more considerate.

BoltBus is a “premium” bus company that runs on the East and West coast. Their buses tend to be much newer and nicer than others that I’ve taken, however the routes are more limited to major cities on the coasts. Their plugs tend to work much more reliably and recently, they started including movies in the price of the bus.

I’ve generally liked BoltBus and I wish that they would expand to more cities. It’s my go-to choice for traveling from New York City to Washington DC.

Trailways Transportation System

Trailways is a network of 70+ regional bus companies in the United States that compromises the oldest bus network in the United States. Their network crosses the United States and I’ve taken Trailways quite a few times. I find their buses not as uniform as you’re likely to be switching companies as you switch state lines. Most of my experience taking Trailways meant that I had long layovers in rural Pennsylvania at one particular transfer point.

For smaller cities with less coverage on the big names, I find that Trailways is more reliable in helping you find a route although it might add time to your journey. It depends on the bus journey, however I find that Trailway buses tend to stop off a lot more although it makes the journey through the United States far more scenic as you’re often taking non-highway routes.

Other Bus companies in the United States

There’s a ton more bus companies in the United States, including Vonlane (Texas), Fullington Trailways (New York/Pennsylvania), Utah Trailways (Utah), Burlington Trailways (Vermont), Jefferson Lines, Bieber Tours (Pennsylvania/New York), Barons Bus Lines (East Coast), Adirondack Trailways (Canada/New York), RedCoach (Florida; premium bus), Capital Trailways (South/Alabama), Hoosier Transportation (Midwest/Iowa/Michigan/Kentucky), Indian Trails (Michigan), Peter Pan (East Coast), Orange Belt (California), etc. There’s a ton more. If you’re not seeing a route to where you’re going, I recommend stopping by the bus station to see if there’s a bus heading that way on a regional line.

On the east coast and the west coast, you’ll also find Chinese bus companies that run between the Chinatowns or downtowns of major cities on the East Coast/West Coast. The Chinese bus companies are often the cheapest option if you’re traveling to/from New York City or LA to a nearby major city.

Due to price, I often took the Chinese bus companies. These bus rides went by without incident for me, but my cousin was stranded in the middle of nowhere after a bus broke down and the bus company wasn’t helpful at all.

Things to know about bus travel in the United States

The bus stations….

With the creation of the interstate highway system, buses in the United States stopped being as popular as they were before. The bus infrastructure has suffered as a result. Most bus stations tend to be on the dingier side and do not require a ticket to enter the bus station, so it’s best to be aware of your belongings. Most bus stations in the United States tend to be located in the city center, which aren’t always in the best neighborhoods.

In the case of many of the “newer” bus lines (e.g. Megabus), their business model is about cutting out the bus station to pass on savings to consumers. This means that their bus station may be a Walmart parking lot or simply a curb on a sidewalk. As a result, you might be forced to wait outside for the bus and/or there may be no bus station for you to wait inside at. Bring an umbrella if you think this might be the case.

Finding the bus departure place may be harder than you realize!

Often, bus terminals for Greyhound and other regional bus stations are well-established terminals in the city center. However, for some of the newer bus companies, they have their buses designated in a large area. You’re going to need an extra twenty minutes at minimum if you’re taking Megabus to find your bus if it’s departing from most major cities.

In New York, I’ve found that I need the extra time to walk past all the buses waiting to find the correct departure point. Similarly, when I took BoltBus out of DC, I had to spend a while searching for the one departing for NYC as there were more than five buses departing around the same time.

You might get dropped off in the middle of nowhere

Modern-day America has been built for cars. For most major cities, you’ll be dropped of at the bus terminal, which can be far from the non-downtown parts of a city. I used to often take one route and the bus terminal was over three miles from the main downtown area, which can be tricky if you don’t have a car.

In one case, I was forced to take a taxi as it wasn’t possible to get from the bus terminal to my final destination (the airport) without it. It’s good to check where the bus stop will be as you don’t want to need to take a taxi to get there. Google Maps in my go-to source.

Avoid buses that depart or arrive late at night

Trust me on this one. A lot of cities have poor transportation after a certain hour (often eleven at night), and often bus terminals are in the heart of the city center. Unlike European cities, many American city centers aren’t uniformly safe and I recommend using some caution if you’ll be walking around with all your valuables late at night. Crime in America is an issue.

Book in advance to get the best times and prices

Many bus companies, especially Boltbus and Megabus, advertise low rates if you book as far in advance as possible. I often take Megabus and wait to see when the tickets go on sale, so I can get one of the first tickets, which is typically less than $5. If you wait too long, especially for holiday weekends, the prices will go up considerably. That said, you’ll find a bus to your destination within a day or two if you simply head to the bus station on short notice.

Not every bus still has wifi… or working plugs

Although many bus companies advertise that buses have wifi, the wifi on the bus is ridiculously slow, throttled for video, and unreliable. I’ve been on countless buses where the wifi never worked because it didn’t have wifi, the wifi was broken, or there were too many people on it at once.

It’s become trendy to have outlets, but often, the outlets are somewhere really inconvenient or they don’t work. A lot of people think initially that they’ll work on the bus, but I find that it’s not a conducive environment for working as the seat-tray makes it hard to fit a laptop in many cases.

This becomes especially true when others decide to lean their chair back. I’ve been on buses where the outlets were above you in the “ceiling”, so unless you spend the whole bus ride holding your plug in the outlet, you will not be charging your electronics. Some of the newer buses have improved upon this design and have easy-to-access plugs/usb ports.

You need identification and often your bus ticket printed

Typically, any photo identification will do, however the name needs to match the ticket. That means that you typically can’t use your friend’s ticket. If you’re a foreigner, I recommend having your passport on you.

Not all bus companies allow e-tickets, so I always print my ticket ahead as finding a good place to print my ticket isn’t always easy near the bus station. Some bus companies are better about accepting e-tickets, so check the terms to see if it’s enough to have a ticket on your phone.

The real reason that I always print my ticket? I need to have my phone charged enough for when I arrive. As a result, I recommend having it printed, so you don’t need to worry about having your phone charged up for the next transfer or for when I arrive at the destination, particularly if it’s a long bus ride. I often find myself playing on my phone, which can kill the battery.

Your bus ticket is typically non-refundable and for a specific time

Unless you pay extra for a refundable ticket, you’re often getting one for a specific time. Don’t miss your bus! Some bus companies allow you to change the ticket for the difference in ticket price in addition to a fee, but I’ve actually bought a ticket in most of those cases as it was cheaper than the change fee.

Oh, the people you’ll meet!

Dr. Seuss must have taken buses around the United States. While most of my bus trips have gone by without incidence, both my husband and I have some memorable bus travel stories as do most of my friends. Most people sleep, stare out the window, talk to friends on the phone, or chat with friends on the bus. Let’s be clear that most people you’ll encounter on the buses will be non-offensive, but as I have regularly taken regional buses through rural areas, you’re bound to meet some characters.

This following story is from my husband who took a twenty-four hour Greyhound bus from Pennsylvania to Kentucky via Ohio…

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, many students choose to take Greyhound home because it is so cheap. You’re not supposed to bring alcohol on the bus, however some people do. This student had smuggled a bottle of peach flavored vodka on the bus. He was hell-bent on talking to every girl on the bus and switched seats countless times. He was drinking the vodka and kept offering it to the girls. After they all rejected it and him, he sitting up next to me. There was a girl nearby from Hawaii who was heading to a friend’s house in Iowa to celebrate Thanksgiving. The girl and the guy hit it off and get very drunk on the bus. They start having a big make-out session, so the whole bus was just eavesdropping while some were openly watching them. The issue was that it was night-time and they were being loud while everyone else on the bus was trying to sleep. The first leg took us to Columbus, which is a big switching point for buses. I was heading south from there as was the guy. The girl was heading further west from there. We get to Columbus and they decide that they’re in love . The girl invites him to come to Iowa with her to her friend’s house and the guy actually switches his ticket to go to Iowa. Sure enough, they left for Iowa together to her friend’s parents house. Imagine her friend’s reaction when she shows up hungover with this random guy she met on a Greyhound.

Don’t drink too many liquids

This is a newbie bus mistake. It’s good to stay hydrated and I typically bring at least one bottle of water for longer journeys, however I generally avoid bus bathrooms. More importantly: Some buses, especially regional ones for shorter legs, don’t have a bathroom on the bus. Be sure to use the bathroom at the bus terminal before you leave!

It’s not a guarantee that your bus will stop off at a bus station or rest stop long enough for you to go inside.

For longer trips, keep in mind that the bus will probably stop off at a rest stop as they’re not allowed to drive over a certain number of hours without stopping. It’s not a guarantee for shorter journeys that the bus will stop off at a rest station long enough for you get something to eat, so bring your own food/drinks ahead.

If it looks like you’ll have fifteen minutes waiting at a station for passengers, be sure to tell the bus driver that you’ll be back to ensure that the bus doesn’t leave without you. There’s often a line for the restroom at rest stops.

Set an alarm

On long bus rides, you might fall asleep. That’s fine, however if your destination isn’t the final destination, you’ll want to set an alarm on your phone before the time that your bus is supposed to arrive. There might be traffic, but in general, it’s a safe move.

One suitcase and one backpack. Keep your valuables with you.

Remember that you’re NOT on a plane. Some bus companies are more lax about luggage, however if it’s a crowded bus or you’re traveling over major holiday, you might need to pay for an extra bag. I also recommend avoiding having your stuff in bags if possible as I’ve seen people get rejected from boarding onto buses when carrying their belongings in plastic bags.

I tend to keep my valuables in my backpack rather than below the bus, especially if the bus has a lot of stop off points I recommend labeling your bag clearly as it’s hard to find a black suitcase among 50 other black suitcases . Weird size luggage might cause issues, so ask beforehand.

Typically at stops, people take their items from the hull, so unless you want your bag taken by mistake, it’s best to keep your valuables in your backpack with you on the bus. I’ve never had a bag stolen or taken by mistake, but if it’s a long ride with a lot of stops, I recommend labeling your bag clearly and packing your backpack carefully.

Be early for the bus!

Although it hasn’t often happened, buses leave on time. More often than not, they’ll wait a couple more minutes for passengers who are running a few minutes late, but I’ve seen so many people running after the bus without success. You need time to get your luggage under the hold. Certain bus companies, including Megabus, overbook their seats, so if you’re not there early and it’s a full bus, you might get rejected on the bus and need to wait for the next one.

What to bring on long bus trips in the United States

If you’re wondering what to pack for an overnight bus trip, I’m well-experienced in these long miserable journeys that I’ve done to save money.

Be sure to bring antibacterial gel

Some bus bathrooms are best avoided. Similarly, the soap dispenser may not work. Be sure to have your own antibacterial gel to clean your hands with, especially if you plan on eating.

Travel Pillow.

This is the MOST important item that you’ll want to pack for an overnight bus trip as I struggle to sleep without a good travel pillow. I have this exact travel pillow and I love how small it folds up!

Backpack that will fit your valuables, including your laptop.

I recommend looking for a carry-on friendly sized backpack that can fit your backpack as well as most of your valuables, so that they’re close to you.

Your iPad and a season of shows lined up with some headphones.

This is definitely not a necessity, but if you’re going to have a lot of long bus trips, I recommend bringing an iPad , so you can watch movies on the bus. Download your shows before you leave wifi!

I recommend not buying your snacks at the bus station if possible as the prices tend to be a lot higher and the selection isn’t as good as going to the supermarket! Avoid peanuts as some people are really allergic. I really like to carry granola bars with me as they’re hard to smoosh and non-messy.

Wear layers and bring a sweatshirt.

You never know when the bus will be too warm or too cold, so I always try to bring a sweatshirt to put on over my clothes in case I get cold! I recommend dressing comfy and you’ll be sitting for many hours.

A good book and a reading light.

For night buses, the driver typically shuts off the lights after a certain time. Although there’s a reading light from above, I’m often very conscious of it annoying the people around me. Instead, I usually bring my own reading light as well as a good book. For a good read, I recommend Night Film (which will take you many hours to finish), the Power , or On the Road for some American travel inspiration.

External Phone Battery Charger

You never know when there won’t be a working charger on the bus and you might need to make a phone call. Don’t let your phone die and carry an external phone battery charger .

Wow, I live in the US and I have never even considered bus travel (excluding taking the Megabus very occasionally from San Francisco to LA). That’s such a cool way to travel the country, and I will definitely have to consider it in the future! Thanks for sharing all these helpful tips.

The US is so spread out that it’s difficult to see a lot of it without access to a car. Bus is often the only option for many travelers. I’ve never traveled long distance by bus in the US, but I’ve heard they’re pretty unpleasant.

I haven’t been to the US of A but everyone has always told me that if you want to move around, you need a car. That is the only way to travel unless you consider flights which can get expensive. I was pleasantly surprised to know that the bus routes are usable.

I went to college in DC so def took the fung wa chinatown bus many times! I did have a greyhound driver once say (at a rest stop) “I dont count heads, I just count time” meaning he was rolling out at the designated time with or without you! I think now at age 40, I’ve graduated from Bus travel.

Don’t use Greyhound bus.. Many of the buses are unsafe, employees for the most part are rude worst of all is the huge amount of lost luggage. Its piled in s warehouse in Dallas I think, and you will never see it again. Mine was lost last summer and none will help me get it back. Travel Greyhound at your own risk.

The buses are affordable but the catch is, IF YOU CANCEL YOUR TRIP, ITS ‘ZERO’ REFUND! However, they can reschedule you at no cost. So, think well and be sure before you book!!

Tip for sleeping on busses

If you are fortunate enough to have 2 seats to yourself push back your seat to the limit. Then leave the other seat in upright position. You can then test your Head on the other seatback. About as comfortable as it gets on a bus

Denali natural history tour.

Offered : mid-May to mid-September
Duration : 4.5 to 5 hours (round-trip, including all stops)

Focusing on the rich natural and cultural history of the park, this 4 ½ to 5-hour tour travels to Primrose Ridge (Mile 17).

Several interpretive stops enhance the experience, with an hour of time spent exploring off the bus. Beginning with a stop at the Denali Bus Depot, learn about the creation of the Denali Park Road with the film “Across Time and Tundra.” Next, visit the historic Savage Cabin to learn how the cabin was once used and how it continues to be used today. Finally, stop at Primrose Ridge to experience a memorable Alaska Native presentation that will enlighten you with how the land has been used for nearly 10,000 years!

Along the way, your driver-naturalist will introduce you to the landscape, geology, and history of Denali National Park.

Tundra Wilderness Tour

Offered : May 20 to mid-September
Duration : 5 to 5.5 hours (round-trip, including all stops)

Variations of this tour have been in existence since 1923, with the first concessioner offering bus trips as far as the road extended at that time.

In 2024, the Tundra Wilderness Tour is a 5–5.5 hour excursion into the park with a certified driver-naturalist. This tour will guide you along the spectacular road corridor, promising different experiences every day, as Denali’s wildlife moves at its own pace and according to the seasons. Travel to the Murie Cabin near the East Fork River (Mile 43) to experience where Adolf Murie lived while conducting his famous research inside what was then known as Mount McKinley National Park!

Wheelchair accessible buses are available, and all stops are wheelchair accessible. The schedule each day varies depending on demand, so there is no fixed, daily schedule. Contact the bus company for more details.

Brick Tour Group Offering Bus Trip to Maine, Nova Scotia

A Brick Township-based tour group is offering a small number of seats remaining on their planned trip to Acadia National Park in Maine and several locations in Nova Scotia, including Prince Edward Island, Peggy’s Cove and the capital of Halifax.

The tour group, led by local resident Liz Barry and her “Lucky Lizzy” Tours, will depart from Point View Road in the township’s Herbertsville section (address and more information in the flyer below) May 29 for the trip that will last through June 6. The cost of the trip is $1,599 per person based on double occupancy and includes transportation, hotels, some meals and several tours.

The itinerary is below:

Day 1: Depart your group’s location in a spacious, video and restroom equipped motorcoach as you head for your destination: Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, & New Brunswick, Canada! This evening, you will check into your hotel in Maine for a two night stay.
Day 2: Start the day with a Continental Breakfast before you depart for Bar Harbor, Maine. Enjoy this beautiful downtown waterside district for free time and shopping. Afterwards, you’ll head to the famous, impressive ACADIA NATIONAL PARK for a Guided Tour. This 47,000-acre Atlantic coast recreation area is primarily on Maine’s Mount Desert Island. New bus-only signal saves time for trimet riders.

Transit signal priority makes bus travel faster and more reliable by moving our riders around traffic

No one likes being stuck in traffic.

For bus riders, however, TriMet has a workaround. In partnership with the Portland Bureau of Transportation, we’re making it easier for buses to move through intersections — and past heavy traffic. That means riders can reach their destination faster on the bus than they would by driving!

A bus-only signal is now online at the intersection of Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and 11 th Avenue in Portland. That signal is part of a network of recent improvements on the Southeast Hawthorne and Madison Street couplet, benefiting four popular bus lines.

This new system saves riders in this corridor nearly 30 seconds, on average, every time they go by bus. How is that possible? We use cutting-edge technology that reduces the amount of time buses have to wait at red lights. Powered by artificial intelligence, transit signal priority is changing the game for bus travel on Portland’s east side.

The science behind the signal

Just like every other vehicle on the road, TriMet buses have to contend with rush-hour jams and other traffic delays. Our buses share the road with passenger vehicles, semi-trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, school buses, motorized scooters and more.

Our buses can’t avoid traffic altogether. With transit signal priority, however, traffic signals get an automated alert when a bus is approaching. This changes the timing of the light, giving the bus a green light to proceed. Seven signals along Hawthorne/Madison have now been improved with this technology. These signals communicate with buses and each other using a cloud-based network, and they harness the power of artificial intelligence to keep buses on the move.

A bus-only signal, like the one at Hawthorne and 11 th , can even allow buses to safely proceed after the light turns red for other vehicles, or give them the go-ahead before the light turns green for everyone else. Thanks to this bus-only signal, our buses can move ahead of the traffic flow and serve the stop at Southeast 12 th Avenue.

The signal is designed with safety in mind. Having two identical sets of lights, one for buses and one for everyone else, would be confusing. Instead, the bus-only signal displays simple icons. Whether the main light is green, yellow or red , our bus operators can see the icon displayed by that bus-only signal and know whether to stop or go.

Altogether, transit signal priority means riders spend less time sitting in traffic, and it means buses arrive on time more often, too.

Time savings

Transit signal priority along Hawthorne/Madison, between 12 th Avenue and Grand Avenue, builds on the success of the transit-only Rose Lanes that are painted on these major roads.

Together, these innovations reduce the amount of time that buses on Line 6-Martin Luther King Jr Blvd , Line 10-Harold St , Line 14-Hawthorne/Foster and Line 70-12th/NE 33rd Ave — lines with a combined weekly ridership of more than 68,500 — have to wait due to red lights and congestion, even when traffic is heavy.

As we’ve implemented transit signal priority in this corridor, we’ve seen time savings upward of 20 seconds per trip. In some cases, it’s closer to 40 seconds. Those savings add up, helping to keep our buses on time and get riders to their destination faster throughout the day.

We know transit signal priority works, because we’ve seen it in action on TriMet FX™. Our Frequent Express line, FX2-Division , saves up to six minutes in each direction thanks to a transit signal priority network, as well as Rose Lanes along Southeast Division Street. There are 57 traffic signals in this network, including 11 bus-only signals, along Division Street from Cleveland Avenue in Gresham to Southeast 11 th Avenue in Portland.

Working together with our local partners, we plan to add transit signal priority in other congestion-prone parts of our service area, making bus a better alternative to driving for more residents.

Brooks: if uber and lyft let minnesota down, maybe metro transit will pick us up.

Faced with threats from Uber and Lyft to exit — Ubxit? — the city on May 1, the Minneapolis City Council plans to wait until summer before it requires rideshare companies to pay drivers a minimum wage.

This buys Minnesotans more time to figure out who will pick us up when Uber and Lyft let us down.

A whole crop of startups have approached city officials, mounting challenges to established rideshares and the dictionary. MOOV. Hich. Pikapp. Wridz.

But maybe Minneapolis' hottest new rideshare is its oldest: Get ready to ride the Büs.

Metro Transit has everything. Wheels. An app. Drivers who earn a living wage.

Braced for Ubxit, I hopped on a bus Thursday morning, headed for downtown Minneapolis.

When I lived in south Minneapolis, I took light rail or biked to work almost every day. When I lived downtown, I walked to work. But now there's a river between downtown Minneapolis and me — and figuring out which of the eight bus stops within two blocks of my house would get me across the Mississippi seemed like a hassle.

Readers, I am here to report that the commute was not, in fact, a hassle. I plugged my address and my destination into the Metro Transit trip planner . It told me where to go, when the next bus would arrive and how long the whole trip should take. The bus was quiet and friendly and the driver was patient while I waved my phone at every surface except the ticket reader.

I've heard nothing good about the light rail since the pandemic, so I half expected the Blue Line to be actively on fire when I hopped aboard.

Readers, it was noisy but it was fine. Nobody was shooting up. Nobody was pooping on the seats. Online comment sections may have left me with unrealistic light-rail expectations. I settled back for the thrill of speeding past all the cars waiting at all the red lights on Hiawatha Avenue. Gridlock is for people who don't ride the rails.

The midmorning trip downtown cost two bucks and involved one transfer to the Blue Line. It took about 40 minutes — 15 of which were spent waiting for the train on a sunny bench.

I could have driven downtown and parked in half the time, at five times the cost.

If I hailed an Uber, it would have run me somewhere between $15 and $27 at that time of day. But I don't think I'll be using Uber anytime soon. Companies that pay their CEOs $24 million don't get to whine about minimum wages for drivers.

Is the bus perfect? Nah. The fact that Uber and Lyft were able to tie the entire state in knots exposes huge gaps in our transportation infrastructure. It would be nice if there were more routes, more buses, more trains, more taxis, more bike paths, more rideshares and more car-shares to get us where we're going.

But come July 2, the bus will be there for us. Even if Uber and Lyft are nowhere to be found.

A new discount bus route from Toronto will help you explore Ontario

Discount bus company FlixBus has expanded with a new route from Toronto to help residents better explore Ontario without breaking the bank.

Leading up to the province's prime hiking, camping and outdoor exploration months, the brand has just launched service between downtown T.O. and Sudbury, connecting the province's biggest city with its northeast (and everywhere in between).

Buses run twice per day, every day except for Tuesdays, starting at Union Station with stops at Toronto Pearson International Airport, Parry Sound, Port Severn, Waubaushene and two points in Sudbury.

The departure times from Toronto are at 8:30 a.m. (from Union) and 9:05 a.m. (from Pearson), and from Sudbury, at 2.30 p.m. (from the Ontario Northland Terminal) and 2:50 p.m. (from the Four Corners). Tickets for the four-to-five-hour trip run from $49 to $59 one-way.

For those coming to the big city from up north, FlixBus offers a ton of connections to places like Niagara Falls , the U.S., Alberta, B.C., Quebec and all across Ontario , with service to and from cities like London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Peterborough, Oshawa, Kingston, Ottawa, Windsor, St. Catharines and Mississauga.

Though it only recently arrived in Canada in 2022 , the low-cost travel line was founded in Germany in 2011 and has long been huge in and around Europe.
