Philly Ghosts Ultimate Dead of Night Haunted Ghost Tour

Dive deeper into the depths of haunted Philly with a dead of night ultimate tour where the most terrifying stories and spirits come to life after hours.

Step into Colonial America’s Haunted Past

Philadelphia is an old city with a rich past. Many know iconic Philly for its role in America’s early government or its famous Art Museum steps from the Rocky movies. Or, perhaps you may know Philadelphia for its famous Eastern State Penitentiary – the world’s first true penitentiary system, once home to notorious mobster Al Capone, whose ghost is often seen in the hallways.

Philadelphia is undoubtedly a haunted city with hundreds of years of ghastly stories. Behind the narrow streets and old brick buildings lays an eerie past of paranormal sightings, gruesome accidents, and untimely deaths. Benjamin Franklin is claimed never to have truly left the city, roaming the old streets and buildings, with several accounts of one of the statues of him even coming to life and dancing in the streets. Other famous figures still lingering on the cobblestone roads include Betsy Ross, Edgar Allan Poe, and Alexander Hamilton. These prominent figures shaped the nation we live in today but paid the ultimate price: wandering the city forever as a doomed, lost soul.

Our tour will take you through Philadelphia’s Old City – home to some of America’s oldest and most haunted buildings, roads, and monuments. Our stories are based on historical events, local legends, and eyewitness accounts of paranormal activity. We’ve reviewed historical records and research for each of the stops on our tour for evidence of hauntings and spirits, and we strive to bring you the most accurate and up-to-date information about Philadelphia’s past and its haunted present. Visit our About Us page to learn more about Philly’s history and why our tour is the best!

What draws the supernatural to Philadelphia?

Philadelphia’s bloody past has left behind some spirits who would like a different ending to their life story. Whether it was the Revolutionary War or The Yellow Fever that took their lives, the ghosts around Old City, Philadelphia, are doomed to repeat their tragic past as they continue to haunt the cobblestone streets. The concentration of human energy here and the passionate figures you will hear about have all poured endless amounts of human energy into this city. These are just a few of Philadelphia’s special features that make it a perfect setting for ghosts to prowl the streets.

Founding Fathers

In 1681, William Penn sailed from England, arrived here, and set out Philadelphia’s city grid on the Delaware River’s West bank. This was the start of what would become the Pennsylvania colony. Later, in 1790, after the Revolutionary War, Philadelphia served as the United States’ capital, and many prominent American figures such as Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton wrestled the country into being and onto its feet. It is said the ghosts of America’s most prominent founding fathers can be seen all across Philadelphia: from lingering at Independence Hall, lurking in the many graveyards here, even dancing in the street! The founding fathers have a special relationship with Philadelphia, a city to which they gave so much of their heart and soul, that they still wander the city they worked so hard to build.

Yellow Fever

In 1793, Philadelphia was literally decimated by a Yellow Fever epidemic, which took about 5,000 of Philadelphia’s 50,000 residents. The Fever was carried to Philadelphia in mosquitoes, which bred in the stagnant, stenching streams that ran through residential backyards. These streams were dumping grounds for human and animal waste, and the pandemic grew, devastating the city for two years. Bodies were dumped into mass graves which pockmarked this previously blooming city, now stalled by the pandemic. Many families abandoned the city due to the Yellow Fever. Still, many prominent doctors remained behind to help care for the sick, many at the nation’s first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital, on Pine and 9th streets. With the stench of death still lingering in these old houses, many ghost sightings have occurred in the old colonial homes where many infamous doctors and patients lost their lives to the disease. Many of these same homes survive in the Old City today, including Elfreths Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited road in America.

Haunted Cemeteries

Philadelphia is riddled with many cemeteries and graveyards carrying both prominent and forgotten figures alike. Back in the late 1700s, when death was occurring nonstop due to the War and then the Yellow Fever, many public spaces were dug up as mass graves for the unwanted to be tossed aside.

The bodies buried in mass graves were commonly referred to as “strangers” to the city at the time – African Americans, suicide victims, prisoners of war, and victims of smallpox. These forgotten bodies like to make a name for themselves now by leaving the grave at night and haunting the town! In addition to these mass grave sites, Philadelphia is home to some of the first churches in the country, all accompanied by cemeteries with their fair share of ghost sightings. From Naval captains to first wives to Native American chiefs, these active cemeteries are sure to give you a chill as you walk their grounds.

There’s no doubt Philadelphia’s rich history plays host to dark paranormal forces, some of which we hope you’ll encounter on our tour! Book your tour today to experience all the thrills, chills, and fun Philadelphia has to offer!

Exactly what you would expect a "ghost tour" to be. Full of history around the city and lots of very cool spots to hear stories. Our two guides were very kind and knowledgeable. They were patient when the kids asked 100 questions. We went to quite a few locations and did a fair amount of walking but nothing that was unmanageable. If you're visiting Philly and looking for a cool way to visit lots of spots and hear tons of stories, I highly recommend this tour. Note- there was no bathroom spot. Use the facilities prior to the tour. Tour started around 8:30 and ended around 9:30.

This tour was lots of fun and a nice way to enjoy a Sep evening. My first ghost tour and a great experience; cool ghost stories for sure.

I saw a ghost! Just took this tour tonight. Was fun, cool stories, beautiful walk. At one point we stop at a cemetery where a woman has been seen supposedly wandering the cemetery looking for her headstone. When the group went off I stayed behind to get a photo through the gates. See the posted photos. There was no green light when I took the picture, but the orb even looks to cast a shadow. Zooming in, I swear I see the face of a woman looking back at me. See for yourself.

We like spooky stuff, and even though it was cold we wanted to get a different insight of the city. We meet in the signers garden, and the tour guide ran a little late. It was so funny standing around awkwardly, then seeing other groups and finally asking "sooooo, hey, are you waiting for a ghost tour?" It gave a little time to chit chat with people from other areas of the country. Even though the tour guide arrived late, but he made up for it with his cadence and routine! He was very entertaining. I won't vet into the stories, but there are some great ones and it was fascinating learning about the different sites. Of course I wanted to see a ghost (sorry, no dice lol) but it was a fun activity. The guide does keep a brisk pace so let him know if you're having a difficult time keeping up!

philadelphia ghost tour reviews

Overall an OK experience if you scare easy and enjoy sight seeing around Old City. This is definitely not an adventure for those who enjoy the thrill of haunted houses or the like. Some of our party arrived a few minutes late, which was no problem for our tour guide. He has been with Ghost Tours for numerous years and was a great story teller. He even used a spooky voice to tell the stories.

An entertaining tour led by Jerrard (sp?). Not only entertaining but gave some great historical info you don't get in your regular tours of the city. Highly recommend. 10/10

So the girlfriend loves ghost tours. And since we were in Philadelphia I promised her we could take one. We had a late dinner and both decided this could only be fun if it was dark out. I mean ghosts during the day. Pft. When could that happen. Our tour guide josh had a very practiced candence though it felt rushed. As though he was trying to get through the tour to me. But she didn't agree. It's hard to say. Now the stories are by no means frightening. The history is what I was interested in and I learned a few things that I didn't already know. So his research into his story telling made it worth while to me. Long story short. If you like history and want to go for a intriguing walk with some interesting stories. And see some sights through a different view. This can be fun for you and the family while in town.

Carpenters hall. One of the "haunted" stops on the tour.

The tour was nice, nothing crazy but very interesting to learn about the historic past of the city. Our guide was awesome! She was great at telling stories & making jokes the whole time. Would recommend.

Our guide was great! she was super nice and had a sense of humor that added a great touch to the spooky tour! the stories were interesting and came with a lot of backstory! there wasn't a lot of walking if you're worried about that. i would recommend if you're into things like this!

Booked the Powel House haunted mansion tour on 7/16/16. I had read the book, "Ghost Stories of Philadelphia" so I was somewhat already aware of this house. My husband does not believe in ghosts but was tolerant of me wanting to do this tour. I do not remember the tour guides name, but she was a delightful young woman who came dressed in beautiful gothic attire. Several strangers we passed complimented her on her dress. She was at the park we met at early and was able to greet everyone on the tour. We did a slow walk around the area on our way to the house and she pointed out a few haunted sites on the way. I did see a haunted squirrel in the park we were in. I am TERRIFIED of squirrels and this squirrel seemed to know that, as he would not break eye contact with me. I was happy when he ran off. F-ing squirrels! They are rats with cute tails. I digress... the Powel House was GORGEOUS. I die for old Victorian things. This house was draped in them. The crown moulding, the wainscotting, the ornate onlays on the ceiling... stunning. I took tons of pictures of the house much to my husband's dismay, as he constantly accuses me of "old lady-ing" up our house when I do these things to it. Right now I'm in the middle of putting wainscotting and chair rail in my own dining room and I found this house to be inspirational to me. The Powel House was host to many important founding father type people. We heard their stories, allegedly their spirits may still be inside. I did not catch any orbs or weird things in my many pictures I took. Did the house "feel" haunted? No, not to me. I think perhaps just because I was so inspired by all the period decor in there, I was more focused on how beautiful everything was than ghosts. But I enjoyed hearing the stories none the less. The only thing about the tour guide that I found mildly off putting was the cadence to her speech. She's a slow talker. I think she does that intentionally though to make her voice as clear as possible for the group. But she was very nice and gave a good tour. I felt disappointed for her when I noticed not everyone tipped her. People: I know you already paid for the tour. But the tour guides are like waitresses. They work for tips. When you take a tour, tip the tour guide. It's just the decent thing to do. $5-20 depending on how much you like it, but for the love of God give the people SOMETHING. I'll get off my soap box. I would recommend this tour group, it was easy to book and I was happy with the tour.

Bishop white house.

During the daytime, the Bishop White House is just one of many historical landmarks to visit. However, things become more creepy as the sun goes down. People can visit the site and experience some creepy vibes.  Built in 1787, the Bishop White House served as a church for several years. Today, people claim male and female ghosts, along with a mysterious cat, haunt the premises.

Old St. Joseph's Church

While churches are a place of worship for many, they tend to have some scary backstories. The Old St. Joseph’s Church is no exception. It’s the oldest Roman Catholic church in all of Philadelphia and perhaps in the United States.  It’s a prime spot for ghost lovers, as several people claim to have seen some spirits lurking around the church’s grounds.

St. Mary's Church & Cemetery

Nothing seems more haunted than a cemetery. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, you can’t deny that touring a cemetery at night is exceptionally creepy. We deliver that creepy thrill by taking our tour guests to the St. Mary’s Church & Cemetery.  You can walk the grounds and read the headstones of some famous historical figures, including soldiers from the Revolutionary War.

Welcome to Philly Ghosts

Uncover the secrets of why the dead still wander the streets of Philly in a city stained with tragedy, death, and the souls of heroes and villains.

What Will I See?

Death and destruction birth a nation.

Once America’s Capitol, history is engrained into the foundations of every building in Philadelphia. The footsteps and fingerprints of founding fathers are everywhere in this city, but that’s not all that hauntingly chills the air. Ghosts of men and women who invested their lives into founding the land of the free are trapped in Philadelphia, tethered to their final resting place with seemingly no relief to their misery.

Beneath Philadelphia is a well of deep, dark history, and within the city walk the souls of the tortured, the insane, and the condemned. Philadelphia’s place in history has solidified its status as one of the most haunted cities in America, and Philly Ghosts invites you to unlock the horror that’s plagued the city from its inception.

Historical Figures Own The Philadelphia Night

Philadelphia is home to legends of American history, and their spirits remind the residents at every opportunity. Uncover Independence Hall, a building with a name dedicated to the proclaimed concept of freedom that also happens to be a prison for the souls of some of the country’s most prominent figures.

Benjamin Franklin is said to have never left the City of Brotherly Love as there have been several reports of bone-chilling encounters with his ghost. Locals and tourists alike claim to have witnessed his apparition mulling over the Declaration of Independence, emitting a musty smell that is now believed to signal his presence.

Of course, Mr. Franklin is not alone. The disgruntled ghost and foe of Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold is seemingly condemned to the building where he’s forced to share with his enemy. Though his apparition stays far away from Ben Franklin, it’s believed he continues to seek revenge for his expulsion, terrorizing anyone who comes in contact with his dark and brooding specter.

The Deadly Price of a Revolution

Breaking free and establishing a new society came with a hefty price: Alexander Hamilton’s life. Hamilton’s backing of Thomas Jefferson and his rising star in politics created deep jealousy in his opponents, especially that of Aaron Burr. Their famous duel would be one that would go down in history as it would end Hamilton’s life during a time when he was creating one of America’s most important institutions.

Visit the First Bank of the United States, the nation’s first financial institution that Hamilton left behind along with a substantial amount of debt his widow would incur. His political career and devastating death would make him a legend, but it’s his spirit that continues to leave its foreboding mark on the bank.

Experience the creepy chills and unsettling sensations that former employees experienced as you hear terrifying tales of the mischievous and unnerving acts committed by Hamilton’s very active and angry ghost. Stories of clerks being constantly disturbed, files going missing or rifled through, and numerous accounts of feeling watched are just a few of Hamilton’s taunts that you’ll hear during your Philly Ghosts tour.

Why is Philidelphia so Haunted?

The curse of the liberty bell.

It’s hard to believe that such a poignant symbol of freedom is also one of the most cursed artifacts in America. Commissioned and made by the British who opposed the colony’s quest for freedom, the bell cracked almost immediately after arriving in Philadelphia. It’s believed that the Whitechapel Bell Foundry of London sent a terribly crafted bell, and cursed it to ensure it would never work properly.

Repairs on the bell would prove futile and the curse placed upon the bell would not only remain but would gain strength. Just months before the attacks on September 11th, 2001, a Park Ranger in training to care for the Liberty Bell felt compelled to attack the bell with a sledgehammer. It’s believed he went mad, becoming another casualty of the curse. His possessed state would result in jail time and thousands of dollars in fines.

The 26-year-old was not the only victim of the Liberty Bell. For centuries before this occurrence, the bell worked its dark magic on the residents of Philadelphia, causing them to experience bouts of insanity upon hearing it ring. This may be a national treasure and an iconic symbol, but we recommend not lingering around this historic bell for too long, or you, too, might go mad with a lust for destruction.

Why Philadelphia’s History Won’t Stay in The Past

Status and wealth may have afforded some a luxurious lifestyle in the 18th century, but nothing would keep them from facing the painful and grisly deaths that hundreds of thousands of people would succumb to. Venture to the Bishop White House, a home that would become a house of death during the Yellow Fever epidemic, and turn into a house of tortured souls after.

A chaplain to the Second Constitutional Convention and the U.S. Senate, Bishop White had his house built between the two churches that he served yet its ideal location would not protect the home from impending doom. Hear the horrifying tales of the unimaginable pain and suffering experienced within the four walls and the sorrowful spirits who remain. Nearly all of Bishop’s family, including five of his children, would perish in the home from disturbingly abhorrent conditions while his coachman would succumb to Yellow Fever in his own home, just behind Bishop White’s.

Shadows and silhouettes are frequently seen in the windows of the home and make their presence known to visitors by filling them with a sense of uneasiness and dread. The apparitions are reportedly so unnerving that Rangers are apprehensive to enter the house at night, petrified of what they might see. Join Philly Ghosts to uncover the darkness of one of the most haunted locations in Independence Parks.

What’s So Special About The Philly Ghosts Tour?

See a darker side of this historic city.

The history behind the establishment of our nation and its casualties is one that is known to many but it’s the stories behind the history that are known to few yet ones that have littered the streets with the tears and agony of those who suffered behind the scenes. Loneliness, despair, and sadness linger in every corner of Philadelphia. Here, the dead don’t rest and Washington Square Park is where so many of them roam.

Ghosts of war, disease, and turmoil still wander the area, forever locked in the trauma of their deaths. Discover the blood-curdling backstories of the original site for a graveyard designated for criminals, the poor, and the forgotten, and learn how unforgiving spirits and their unrelenting hauntings stalk the residents of the Cradle of Liberty. The souls of those ruthlessly disposed of, some in nothing more than a canvas cloth, have yet to find peace and are determined to ensure those who visit the park don’t find it either.

Experience a Once-in-a-Lifetime Look at The True Soul of Philadelphia

Mystery fills the air as you stroll through a darkened historic and haunted Philadelphia. Chills will creep down your spine as you hear the tragic stories of the dead, like that of Elizabeth Physick, wife of the “Father of American Surgery”, Phillip Physick. A man of science, Phillip had no interest in dealing with his wife who suffered from mental and behavioral issues.

In the midst of a divorce, Dr. Physick’s solution was to medicate her on opium, rendering her incompetent and leaving her to wander aimlessly in their backyard and sit next to her favorite tree for hours. The callousness of Dr. Physick’s, however, would strip her of all that she had left. Uncover the Hill-Physick House and the disturbing ordeal that led to the death of Elizabeth.

Today, Elizabeth still makes appearances in the home, looking angry and sinister, possibly in search of the man who had a hand in her demise so many years ago. Though terrifying enough, the former Mrs. Physick is not alone in the home. Hear the unsettling stories of an old witch that terrorized the area in life and long after her death. And if we stay long enough, you just may hear her shrieks too.

Be a Part of a Like-Minded Ghostly Community

In Philadelphia, American heroes like Ben Franklin still stalk the hallways of national historic buildings. Cursed symbols of freedom wait to target their next soul. Ghosts of epidemic victims roam stately mansions, still suffering from a fever that took their lives so long ago. The past never really died in Philadelphia.

Embark on an investigation into the depths of Philadelphia’s dark past and discover hair-raising stories of America’s founders doomed to restlessly roam Philadelphia’s streets forever. The city is rife with the persecuted souls of a burgeoning time that was just as dark and demented as it was promising.

The dead have yet to forget their unfortunate plights, and they’re determined to not let us forget either.
