Yes, trekking in January has some difficult aspects. But with the New Year season still in effect, the cities are vibrant and colorful. Trekking areas in lower altitudes are still open and ready to welcome you. With the cold climate, you will enjoy the hike than any other month of the year. The area with light snowfall only adds fun and adventure to your trekking experience. The skies are clear for the great views of mountains. 

The teahouses will have plenty of rooms and better service. The costs of food and room in the higher region are cheaper than any other time. Even the travel agencies provide special discounts and offer to lure visitors. The rate of hotels and domestic flights is also less. January is considered as off-season months by the travel agency and there’s some reason for it. It’s obvious that you should wonder “Is January a good time to visit Nepal?” The climate in the higher altitude in January is very cold and the weather is rather unstable.

Most of the high altitude trekking routes like Everest Three pass trek , Annapurna Circuit trek, etc are closed due to snowfall and weather concerns. Altitude above 3000m can have snow as thick as one foot. While it is definitely fun to walk and the view is excellent, you have to consider the safety factor. The trail becomes more slippery and you might lose your control. You should choose your trekking destination very carefully. 

Other difficulties can include delays in domestic flights due to fog and low clouds in the valleys. Wet cold waves can affect visibility in southern planes such as Chitwan, Bardia, and Lumbini. These cities are crowded with tourists from all over the world. The first week of January is the peak season for domestic and foreign tourists in Pokhara, Chitwan, and Kathamandu where New Year is celebrated.

Festivals in Nepal in January:

January in Nepal is also festive and fun. Three major events other than English New Year are celebrated during this month.

Maghe Sakranti

As per the Nepalese calendar, the 1st of Magh (14th January) is celebrated as Maghe Sakranti. People all around the country eat boiled sweet potato, sweet balls (Laddo), Ghee, and other classic food with all family members. The people of the Tharu ethnic group who live in the Terai region of people celebrate this day as New Year. 

Sonam Losar

The people of Tamang ethnic communities celebrate Sonam Losar as their new year. Special dance is performed at the monasteries to expel negative forces. Houses are cleaned to sweep away the bad luck in hopes of bringing good luck. There are a positive vibe and celebrations all around the country including Kathmandu. 

Saraswati Puja

The Goddess of Knowledge, Saraswati is worshipped during the month of Magh. On this day, Children worship the Goddess as well as their books and copies to get the blessing. Young children also learn to write and read the very first letter of their life.

One of the ranges visible from Nagarkot is Mt. Everest itself. You will also see the Annapurna range, Langtang range, Jugal Himal range, Manaslu range, Ganesh Himal range, and Rolwaling Range. The sunrise and sunset view from Nagarkot is also excellent. 

Besides Mountain View, Nagarkot is also known as a place for Yogis. The classes conducted in the warm sun of the hilltop with the mountain ranges in the background are fun and thrilling. You can also aim for the Nagarkot Panoramic hike in the winter. There are a number of luxurious hotels and lodges around Nagarkot that make the stay fun and luxurious.

Having been in Nepal for every month of the year, I wanted to share some of my insights on what each month has to offer. Nepal in January can be both insanely beautiful with crystal clear skies and extremely cold. It’s great for wildlife encounters, but difficult for high altitude trekking. Here’s the ups and downs of visiting Nepal in January…

January in Nepal is COLD. Okay, well maybe not. Let’s break it down. It is in fact the coldest month of the year in Nepal, however, it’s only cold in places located at altitude. For instance, Kathmandu is situated at 1,400 m (4,593 ft), so it’s cooler there in the winter. Places in the Terai like Chitwan National Park and Lumbini are located just above sea level. These areas are gorgeous in the winter reaching a low of 40 F (4 C) at night and 75 F (24 C) during the day.

High altitude trekking:.

Most people who visit Nepal want to go trekking. It’s one of the major things to do in the country. Unfortunately, January is extremely cold in the mountains and teahouses have no heat. There’s also a chance you may get stuck in a white out or get hit with an avalanche. The government often closes down high passes during January to keep people safe. Therefore, I do not recommend trekking at high altitude this time of year.

Low Altitude Trekking:

On the other hand, this is an amazing time of year to do a low altitude trek. My favorite is the Kathmandu Valley Trek which we did over the course of 10 days in January. Even low altitude trekking is cold this time of year. It’s great for walking during the day but be sure to bring layers for bundling up at night. Because there is little rain in January, you tend to get beautiful clear skies with wonderful mountain views. I even saw the Himalayas from the middle of Kathmandu city a few times in the winter! I had no idea you could see them driving down the highway since they are always covered by the smog and clouds.

Tourism in January

According to stats from the Nepal Tourism Board , only 6% of tourists who come to Nepal come in January. January gets half the number of tourists as the most popular month (October). So it’s easy to say that Nepal doesn’t get very crowded in the winter. I’ve gone whole weeks without seeing a tourist while in Kathmandu.

Something to note about off-season is that things tend to be cheaper. For instance, hotel pricing may be up to 50% off. Traveling in the winter may have some downfalls, but it is good for those looking for a great deal!

January isn’t peak time for seeing wild animals, but it does fall close. Many people say the best time to see tigers is between October and December. Since there is little rain during this time of year, it’s likely animals will come to the river to drink. Guides in the area know the animals’ favorite spots, making it easy to track and find them. The best parks to see tigers are Chitwan National Park and Bardia. Both are located in the Terai which is a beautiful climate in January, averaging 72 F (22 C) during the day.

I hear that bird watching in Nepal in January is also excellent. You can see thousands of birds before they begin to migrate north for the summer. Nepal has 886 known bird species

Most of the country is extremely safe to travel around in January, however, snow is a major concern at altitude. If you are planning to trek, the trails may be closed and there is a major risk of avalanches. I saw one from far enough away to not have to run, but it was close enough to know that I’d never want to be under one.

Best areas to visit in January:

Lower altitudes like Chitwan National Park, Bardia National Park, Lumbini, and Pokhara. Trekking/hiking at low altitudes in areas around Shivapuri National Park, Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Namo Buddha, Balthali, and Pharping.

Best areas to avoid in January:

High altitude locations (over 3,000m) and treks in the mountains.

Festivals in January

Jan 15 th Maghe Sankranti

Maghe Sankranti marks the end of winter solstice. Tharu people consider this their New Year’s Day. Typically, festivals are celebrated at home with family, but if you choose to stay in a Tharu homestay during this festival, you may get to see how locals celebrate. Tharu’s are dominant in areas around Chitwan National Park.

Jan 22 nd Sonam Losar

Sonam Losar (Tibetan New Year) is celebrated over 15 days. Tibetan Buddhists celebrate this festival, so it’s popular in the Everest Region and near Boudhanath Stupa in Kathmandu. You can check out my post on how to celebrate Losar for more info!

Packing Essentials

Warm clothes are super important in January. I spent the entire month in a coat, scarf, and hat. In budget hotels, there is rarely heat inside or you have to pay an extra $10 a night for rooms with heat. Luxury hotels will include heat in the rooms.

Nepal is world famous for its majestic mountains, awesome landscapes, and diverse culture and traditions. This geographical variation offers a number of trekking opportunities throughout the year. And so, trekking in Nepal in January is very much possible.

January is the month where the nature blankets in the world of snow and the whole surrounding turn into the serene peace of heaven. But since January is the local winter month in Nepal you should come prepared for the cold and snow in most of the high altitude trekking trails.

Trekking areas which are in lower altitude are open and are less affected by the cold weather of the winter season.

All you have to do is come prepared with the right clothing, equipment, and mental preparedness for the weather changes.

Climate and Weather in January

January is the coldest and the driest month of the year in Nepal. The Himalayan region of the country gets freezing cold during this time and the cold wind makes it even colder. It also sees a lot of snowfall during this time.

The average temperature during the daytime is around 8 degree Celsius and during the night time it is around 1 degree Celsius. However, the temperature at Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp can go below -20 degree Celsius.

Hence, for trekking in higher elevations in Nepal in January you need to be extra prepared. If you are a professional trekker or a climber you will have quite easy time trekking in the cold than the novice trekkers.

You are also advised to take a few extra days in case you face some situations such as flight cancellations etc due to the weather. You will also need to start your trek early because the days are shorter during winters.

Lower elevations treks are much more appropriate in January because it does not get very cold and it does not get snowfalls even in winters.

Recommended Trekking in Nepal in January

Everest panorama trek.

Maximum Elevation: 3,870 meters

Everest Panorama Trek is the easiest and the safest trek in Nepal during January . As the maximum altitude you will ascend in this trek 3870 meters, the cold of January will not affect you adversely in the trek.

It is this five-seven day trek up to the elevation of 3,870 meters. It is a convenient way to get a taste of the Everest Region .

This trekking route lies in the Khumbu Everest region and the starting point of this trek is from Lukla.

You will take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and from Lukla, you will start your trek to Phakding, which takes about 3 hours. From here you will trek to Namche Bazaar, the biggest village in the Khumbu Region.

You will then trek for about 5 hours to reach Tengboche, home to the famous Tengboche Monastery. Tengboche offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.

Along the trek route, you will pass through some beautiful villages and cross some impressive suspension bridges. And thick the and spectacular rhododendron forests are bound to leave you in awe.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Maximum Elevation: 3,210 meters

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is an extremely popular trek not only amongst foreigners but also the locals. And although Spring is the best time for this trek, January is also equally good. The snow-covered trails and the glistening sunrise views make this trek special in January.

Considered as the most popular destination for best short treks for all season, people usually complete this trek in four to five days. The starting point of this trek is Pokhara and from here you will trek to Tikhedhunga.

From Tikhedhunga you will trek to Ghorepani. This trail will take you across scenic rhododendron and oak forests. You will also get stunning views of some mountains such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.

But the main highlight of this trekking route is the view of the Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) which is present beside you throughout the trek.

Ghorepani is a village surrounded by spectacular scenery and is home to the traditionally rich Gurung community.

From Ghorepani, you will head towards Poon Hill at 1,500 feet. This place will provide you with breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains. The mountains like Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Fishtail and Singa Chuli etc are spectacular.

The views are especially more breathtaking because of the clear weather of January. You will also enjoy the peace and solitude in the trail which is normally packed with trekkers during the peak seasons.

Khopra Danda Trek

Khopra Danda Trek is one of the lesser known trekking destinations as it is a newly opened trekking route in the Annapurna Region . It is usually not packed with trekkers even during the peak season so it is possible for you to have the route all to yourself in January.

So if you are looking for an off beaten trek with solitude, this trek is just for you. Khopra Danda is one of the best viewpoints to get magnificent and panoramic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, II, III and south, Hiu Chuli, Fishtail, Lamjung, and Nilgiri.

For this trek, you will follow the same trail as the Ghorepani Poonhill trek. And then descend to a valley before climbing back again to the Khopra Ridge at 3640 m.

Since this trekking route is fairly new, you will get to experience the untouched and raw natural beauty this place has to offer.

Kathmandu Valley Trek

Maximum Elevation: 2,175 meters

Since Kathmandu is at a lower elevation, this trek is the ideal trek in winters. This is a classic 3-day trek that takes you from Kathmandu to Nagarkot and finally to Dhulikhel.

It is a great alternative to those who cannot trek the higher altitudes in winter.

This trek will offer you beautiful views of the Himalayan ranges. And will give you an opportunity to observe the rich and diverse Nepalese culture closely.

You will trek through narrow mountain paths, dense forests, and small villages. The panoramic views of the pristine mountains in the background are absolute bliss.

There are also plenty of other day hikes for you to choose in Kathmandu. Trekking in Kathmandu is easy with a variety of guesthouses and resorts available to choose from.

Few Tips for Trekking in Nepal in January

• Since winters in higher altitudes are harsh, pack clothes and sleeping gears that will protect you from the extreme cold.

Nepal is the destination with everything: towering Himalayan peaks and world-class trekking, sacred religious sites and wildlife-rich forests – not to mention well-preserved medieval architecture, tranquil hilltop towns and impressive culinary diversity.

Almost everyone visits Kathmandu, and most people take a trek through the Everest or Annapurna ranges – if you’re not sure where else to go in Nepal, try our list of places that shouldn’t be missed, from national parks patrolled by one-horned rhinos to hotspots for mountain adventure sports.

Kathmandu, Nepal's historic, foodie capital

Best for eating out.

An atmospheric old town, countless temples, shrines and religious sites, buzzing markets and several fascinating museums and galleries – plus a fair share of traffic and pollution – combine to make the Nepali capital a riot for the senses. 

History and culture are the main draws for visitors to Kathmandu , but the city also has a remarkably varied dining scene, catering to visitors from across the globe. Alongside excellent Nepali cuisine, you can find everything from Korean bulgogi (barbecued beef), Japanese sushi and Thai curries to French crêpes, Austrian schnitzel and Middle Eastern falafel.

The Himalayas, the world's favorite trekking destination

Best for trekking.

Dominated by eight of the world’s ten highest mountains, the Nepali Himalayas stretch the length of the country and offer unparalleled trekking opportunities. The scenery is awe-inspiring – soaring snow-covered peaks, gin-clear lakes, terraced green hills, remote villages, chains of fluttering prayer flags. Best of all, you can hit the trails with minimal admin, beyond obtaining a Trekkers’ Information Management Systems (TIMS) card and paying any national park fees. 

The Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit and Langtang Valley treks are the most popular routes for travelers, but there are many other less-trodden but equally spectacular routes to follow. The dramatic two- to three-week trek to the base of the third tallest mountain, Kanchenjunga, in the far east of Nepal, is a stunning route that sees just a handful of trekkers.

Bodhnath, Kathmandu's most spectacular stupa

Best for tibetan buddhist culture.

The largest stupa (dome-shaped Buddhist monument) in Asia sits in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, in the village of Bodhnath (also known as Boudha) on the outskirts of Kathmandu. The shrine is a hub of Tibetan Buddhist culture in exile, and thousands of pilgrims travel here daily to make a kora (ritual circumambulation) of the resplendent white stupa, which is best visited in the late afternoon after most tourists have departed. 

Bodhnath is also a popular place for travelers to study Tibetan Buddhism, with a wide range of courses, seminars and talks on offer. Duck into the backstreets to see Nepal's most skilled repoussé metalworkers in action.

Meet tigers and rhinos in Chitwan National Park

Best for spotting rhinos.

A royal hunting ground in the 19th century, Chitwan became Nepal’s first national park in 1973 and has since earned international recognition for its conservation efforts, with growing populations of rhinos and tigers in the marshlands and forests flanking the confluence of the Rapti and Narayani Rivers.

Located in the western Terai, the thin ribbon of low-lying land running across southern Nepal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the finest places to view wildlife in South Asia. Its forests, grasslands, marshes and rivers are home to a profusion of animal and bird species, most notably a large population of one-horned rhinos, which have recovered from the brink of extinction thanks to some smart conservation practices.

Bhaktapur, Nepal's best-preserved medieval town

Best for medieval architecture.

Although badly affected by the devastating 2015 earthquake, the Kathmandu Valley city of Bhaktapur remains an architectural treasure trove, with an astonishing collection of well-preserved buildings dating back 600 years or more, including temples, palaces and traditional brick and timber homes.

There are three main squares flanked by temples and palaces, a maze of cobbled alleyways lined with red-brick shops and houses and innumerable tucked-away courtyards, shrines, pagodas and pavilions. A walk through Bhaktapur, which was once an independent kingdom, feels like a journey back in time, particularly if you stay overnight and see the city after the daytrippers have gone home.

Pokhara, gateway to the Annapurna range

Best for adventure sports.

Located on the shore of shimmering Phewa Lake, gazing up at the jagged Annapurna and Manaslu mountain ranges, the city of Pokhara is Nepal’s adventure sports capital. Travelers come here in droves to relax on the lakeshore and indulge in exhilarating activities in the surrounding mountain valleys.

As well as being the jumping-off point for some of Nepal's most popular treks (including the famous Annapurna Circuit), Pokhara is an excellent place to organize whitewater rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, canyoning and paragliding trips in the surrounding countryside, as well as straight-up adrenaline-charged activities such as bungee jumping and ziplining.

Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha

Best for a buddhist pilgrimage.

A short drive west of the Terai town of Siddharthanagar (also known as Bhairawa), Lumbini is one of Buddhism’s holiest sites. In the middle of the Sacred Garden, the Maya Devi Temple marks the precise spot where Siddhartha Gautama – better known as the Buddha – was born in 563 BCE. 

This intensely sacred site is surrounded by a vast complex filled with temples built in a wild variety of architectural styles by Buddhist communities from around the world, alongside a museum, cultural center and a towering white-and-gold peace pagoda in a park often visited by Sarus cranes.

Encounters with royal history in Gorkha

The best for hilltop palaces.

In the Middle Hills, Gorkha was the hometown of Prithvi Narayan Shah, who unified the warring kingdoms of Nepal in 1769 and founded a long-lasting royal dynasty that endured (with one short period of disruption) until Nepal became a republic in 2008.

The king was born in the 16th-century Gorkha Durbar , a spectacular palace-temple-fort complex in an elevated position high above town and accessed via a steep, meandering trail. Although Gorkha was close to the epicenter of the powerful 2015 earthquake, its buildings survived relatively unscathed and most damaged structures have since been restored.

Bandipur, Nepal's most charming hill getaway

Best for a relaxing getaway.

An enchanting town perched on a ridge in the Middle Hills, high above the road from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Bandipur has been described as a “living museum” thanks to its array of 18th-century Newari mansions and temples.

Once an important stop-off on the lucrative India-Tibet trade route, it offers a captivating mélange of attractive guest houses, charming cafes, pedestrianized streets, dotted shrines, sublime vistas and numerous day hikes, making it an ideal spot for a break from the crowds.

Bardia National Park, for quieter nature encounters

Best for safaris without the crowds.

Around 400km (249 miles) west of Chitwan, Bardia National Park is larger, covers a greater range of habitats and receives far fewer visitors than its more heralded counterpart. Accessed from the quiet village of Thakurdwara, the reserve has one-horned rhinos, tigers, elephants and leopards, as well as gharial crocodiles and rare Gangetic dolphins. 

Although spotting these creatures may require a little more time and patience than in Chitwan, Bardia’s pristine landscapes and the absence of crowds of visitors disturbing the wildlife are more than ample compensation. Early morning and late afternoon safaris offer the best chances of animal encounters.

Janakpur, Nepal's other sacred city

Best for hindu temples.

In the eastern Terai, the city of Janakpur is often overlooked by travelers, yet its glorious Janaki Mandir is an architectural masterpiece and has huge significance in Hindu mythology. Dedicated to the goddess Sita – who, according to legend, was born and married the god Rama here – the baroque Mughal-style temple draws pilgrims from across Nepal and India. 

Janakpur is also renowned for its exquisite Maithili paintings, an ancient art form that depicts stories from Hinduism, as well as scenes from everyday life in the Terai. You can buy works from local painters at the Janakpur Women’s Development Centre just outside of town.

Get Himalayan views without the hard work in Nagarkot

Best for watching the sunrise.

On a ridge just outside the Kathmandu Valley, the village of Nagarkot has one huge selling point: it offers panoramic views of eight Himalayan ranges, including Everest. It's one of the best spots to come for mountain views without the effort of trekking.

If you’re lucky enough to be here on a clear, cloud-free day – these are most common from October to December and March to April – the sight of this magnificent sprawl of snow peaks is mesmerizing, especially at sunrise.

1. Durbar Square, Kathmandu

As the capital and the major entry city of Nepal, Kathmandu is the must-visit city for your first trip to Nepal. The numerous exquisite monuments, sculptures, medieval temples, and magnificent artworks attract millions of travelers coming to this historical city. To explore this ancient city, Durbar Square is a perfect place to start. From its name Durbar ('palace' in Nepali), you can easily know it is the place where the king was crowned. Many temples clustered around the square are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

2. Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

If you have limited time to visit temples in Kathmandu, then Pashupatinath Temple would usually be your best choice. Located on the banks of the Baramati River, Pashupatinath Temple was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. The attractive artwork on the architecture and its pagoda styles and beautiful natural river sights makes this temple the top most-visited attraction in Kathmandu. After you reach Lukla, you will walk through Dudh Koshi river to reach Phakding. Then, you will head towards Namche Bazaar. It is one of the famous trading centers of the Khumbu region.
