The six-digit alphanumeric code that appears on your boarding pass is your PNR, or Passenger Name Reference—also known as your record locator, reservation code, or booking code.

This randomly generated sequence is what you need to type into a computer or a self-serve kiosk at the airport to retrieve your boarding pass, and is what identifies you as a unique passenger—you know, just in case there’s someone else with your exact first and last name on your flight. Among other things, this PNR holds information about your meal preferences or other special requests. It’s also one of the main reasons you shouldn’t throw away your boarding pass in a public trash can, as someone may be able to pull your information using your reservation number or bar code.

Flight code and number

There’s generally a simple formula for this one: two uppercase letters, followed by a four-digit number. The letters are the airline code, or the numbers universally recognized to represent the name of the airline in shorthand. Some are obvious—AA is American Airlines, for example. But plenty more are not, especially for carriers based outside of the United States (and some domestic airlines as well: JetBlue, for instance, is B6). IATA maintains a list of all its member airlines , including the airline code for each.

The flight number is determined by the airline, using a complex algorithm that takes into account past and current airline flight numbers, as well as factors like other airlines with similar sounding numbers scheduled to fly through the same airspace at the same time. This helps avoid potential confusion with pilots and air traffic control.

A floating letter

You may notice a letter on your boarding pass that’s distinct from all the others—a lonely “B” hanging out by itself, for instance. That letter may be the most classist part of your ticket (aside from your seat assignment). The stray letter may appear next to your seat assignment , flight number, or even just adjacent to the date and time of your flight. Different letters mean different things to different airlines, but generally, the letter marks your airline status, aka, your likelihood of getting an upgrade based on your loyalty status and which seat you booked. Will my PNR be confirmed?

Because there are only a limited number of seats available on a train, it is not possible to provide a confirmed train ticket online for every booking. When tickets are available, the train ticket booking system displays CNF (Confirmed) and RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) status, and subsequent bookings display waitlisted status. Only if a CNF/RAC ticket is cancelled will waitlisted tickets be confirmed in order.

PNRs that remain in fully waitlisted mode after chart preparation are automatically cancelled if booked through IRCTC and must be cancelled at reservation counters for tickets booked through PRS counters. A small clerkage of Rs.60 is deducted per passenger.

If a passenger has booked an e-ticket from IRCTC website and forgets to take the e-ticket print out but remembers the PNR number then there is no problem provided the passenger has a valid id proof. online ticket booking sms is also allowed in place of ticket print out. On missing both print out and sms, a penalty of Rs.50 per ticket can be levied by TTE. However for counter tickets passenger needs to carry both original ticket and a valid id proof. 18. I booked a ticket in sleeper (SL) class but my ticket has been upgraded to third ac (3A). Can class get upgraded for any railway PNR?

Railways can upgrade your ticket and provide alternate accommodation in higher class subject to vacancy if the passenger has opted for upgradation while booking ticket. Keeping in mind passenger's convenience, upgradation if done, is done for all the passengers in the ticket. Therefore, next time if you see your berths in an AC coach on checking pnr status despite booking in sleeper, don't panic but consider yourself lucky!

19. Live pnr status is showing that the train is cancelled. How can a train get cancelled. Will I be getting refund?

What is a PNR and how do I get one?

PNR stands for "passenger name record," and it's the Trenitalia booking code for your train ticket. You receive a PNR when you have purchased an  e-ticket .

On some trains, the PNR is all you'll need to show to the conductor (either printed out or on your smartphone or tablet). On other trains, you'll be required to use the PNR in a self-service ticket machine at the station to print out a paper ticket before boarding the train.

How can you retrieve a Passenger Name Record (PNR) ? Let’s say you want to retrieve the PNR Data from different GDS Systems. For example when you want to check the quality of your bookings that have been made, perhaps you want to check if the corporate rules of your company have been held in the last bookings. Normally the PNR Data is saved in the Systems of the GDS. So if you need the PNR Data, you need access to the different GDS Systems as for example Sabre, Amadeus, Galileo/Apollo, Travelport, Worldspan, Patheo or Abacus.

But how do you get an easy access to these different systems which all use different languages in their systems? How can you retrieve the PNR Data from this systems? You need a middle layer between the language of the different GDS and your front end system with whom you are trying to retrieve the PNR Data. This system needs to make it easy for you to retrieve PNR Data from different sources. What exactly is a PNR, Passenger Name Record? Why do you need to retrieve a PNR?

Definition Passenger Name Record (PNR): In the travel industry, a Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a record in the database of a Computer Reservation System (CRS) that contains the itinerary for a passenger. The concept of a PNR was first introduced by airlines that needed to exchange reservation information in case passengers required flights of multiple airlines to reach their destination. For this purpose IATA defined a standard for the layout and content of the PNR. When a passenger books an itinerary, the travel agent or travel website he uses will create a PNR in the Computer Reservation System it uses. This is typically one of the large Global Distribution Systems (GDS), such as Sabre, Amadeus, Worldspan, or Galileo, but if the booking is made directly with an airline the Passenger Name Record (PNR) can also be in the database of the airline’s CRS. I’m not 100% sure what you mean by „back pricing process“. But I am not an expert in all aspects of pricing. The GDS’s documentation should provide you with such details. After a short search: In case you mean „past date pricing“, the qualifier could be ¥B(date:DDMMMYY) in the pricing command.
