10 BIGGEST port cities in Russia

1. Novorossiysk

Novorossiysk is located in the ice-free Tsemes Bay of the Black Sea. For several centuries, the city belonged to the Ottoman Empire, but under a peace treaty following the Russian-Turkish wars in 1829 it passed to Russia. It is the largest port in Russia, with a turnover of more than 140 million tons of cargo a year. It also houses a Russian Navy base.

2. St. Petersburg

The first port appeared here in 1703, the year the city was founded. However, the Gulf of Finland has a narrow and winding coast near St. Petersburg and, over time, this became a problem for large merchant ships. To address the problem, a canal was built in the second half of the 19th century, which made it possible to open a new port. The Big Port of St. Petersburg stretches over 31 km along the coastline and has about 200 berths.

4. Nakhodka

“What a find!” exclaimed a sailor aboard the corvette ‘America’, as it approached an unknown bay in the summer of 1859, or so the legend has it. In any event, this is what this new point on the map was called: Nakhodka, which means “a find” in Russian. At first, there was just a village there, but in the 1930s and 1940s, a port was built using the labor of Gulag prisoners and a city followed soon after. These days, it is the third largest city in Russia’s Primorsky Territory after Vladivostok and Ussuriysk.

5. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

A settlement was founded in Petropavlovsk back in the late 17th century, when explorers first reached these distant lands. In the 19th century, a port began to be built here, taking advantage of the ice-free Avacha Bay. During World War II, a large new port was built, which was expanded throughout the 20th century and continues to actively develop still, because the port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is an important point on the Northern Sea Route, which offers the shortest route from the European part of Russia to the Far East.

6. Murmansk

The world’s largest city beyond the Arctic Circle is home to an important northern ice-free port. It was built in 1915 during World War I, after which a city was founded here, too. In Soviet times, Murmansk was actively developed as a supply and repair base for the Northern Fleet. During World War II, the city was badly damaged by air raids, but the Nazi army was unable to capture it by land. These days, the Murmansk port retains its significance as a base for the development of the Arctic and an outpost of the Russian nuclear fleet.

The Sochi seaport terminal, built in the Stalinist Empire style in 1955, is one of the city’s hallmarks. The Sochi port primarily caters for passenger traffic, rather than commercial and industrial activities. Furthermore, oil tankers are prohibited from entering the port of Sochi, unlike large cruise liners, which stop there on a regular basis. The history of Russian presence on this coast dates back to the first half of the 19th century, when the first fort was built and, since 1909, Sochi has become Russia’s main resort on the Caucasus coast of the Black Sea.

8. Kaliningrad

Until 1945, the city was called Königsberg and was the capital of East Prussia. The first commercial port was founded here back in the 14th century. After World War II, the northern part of this province and the city itself were transferred to the USSR. The port was badly damaged during the war, so the Soviet government built a new port and renamed the city Kaliningrad, which became Russia’s westernmost port and the only ice-free port on the Russian coast of the Baltic Sea. The port of Kaliningrad primarily caters for commercial cargo and fishing vessels. Interestingly, it became a fishing industry hub only after the region became part of the USSR.

9. Makhachkala

The capital of the Republic of Dagestan is the largest city in the Russian North Caucasus and Russia’s only ice-free port on the Caspian Sea. The port was built in the second half of the 19th century. It has a large dry cargo harbor, a railway crossing and a modern high-tech oil harbor. In addition, Makhachkala is home to one of the bases of the Caspian Flotilla of the Russian Navy.

10. Sevastopol

Modern Sevastopol was founded by decree of Catherine the Great in 1783, immediately after Crimea became part of the Russian Empire. In the early 19th century, Sevastopol became the main Black Sea port of the Russian Empire. This city of military glory, which was a battlefield in a number of wars, is now the main naval base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. In addition to the military base, the ice-free Sevastopol Bay has a large industrial port, through which deliveries of fish, oil, metals and various other products are carried out.

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brands at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

In the event that You engage the services of PortTravel on behalf of a travel agent or any third party, acting as an intermediary, PortTravel disclaims any liability or problem arising from the failure of the travel agent to comply with these Terms and Conditions, and in the same way for data incorrectly provided by the travel agent for the reservation of land services, air, sea, shipping and cruise lines, or for the negligence that could be incurred by such an intermediary by omitting information to the user-tourist or to You on the procedures for recruitment, payment and cancellation of services purchased. DISCLAIMER - PortTravel, as an Internet Travel Agency, provides services as an intermediary booking agent between you and the direct provider(s) of the tourist services promoted on this Site. Port Travel establishes commercial negotiations within its own standards of quality and service, such as, but not limited to: hotel accommodation, ground transportation and other related tourist activities such as tours and excursions, choosing only the most qualified and prestigious suppliers in the market. However, since the legal nature of Port Travel is to act solely and exclusively as an INTERMEDIARY and not as a direct provider of tourism services, PortTravel does not assume and will not assume any responsibility generated from any relationship with you and the Final Service Providers and in turn you release Port Travel from any liability for any failure or non-compliance by the direct provider or providers of tourism services, including without limitation any failure or compliance by the airlines, hotels, providers of temporary accommodation, shipping companies and all kinds of boats, water sports providers, car rental agencies, transportation agencies, tour operators, diving instructors, snorkeling instructors, golf instructors, swimming with dolphins instructors, fishing instructors, adventure and extreme sports providers, water parks, ecological parks, and in general about any failure or lack of compliance by all those tourist services that are provided directly by one or more providers and not directly by Best Day; However, Port Travel may, at its discretion, provide you with the contact details and/or address of the supplier so that you can make the respective claim or complaint that you consider necessary. PortTravel, as a Travel Agent and INTERMEDIARY booking agent, does not and will not make any guarantees regarding the services provided directly by the Suppliers, nor does it guarantee the financial position of the Suppliers or any reimbursement to You for any loss experienced as a result of the financial condition of said Suppliers, including, without limitation, economic insolvency or bankruptcy in which said Suppliers are declared. In the event that the Provider fails to perform any of its services for which payment has already been made by You, the sole remedy for reimbursement shall be directly to the Provider that failed to perform its services, or may apply for insurance coverage if applicable, or to any other third party, unless such failure is directly caused by Port Travel. PortTravel assumes no liability to You and You release PortTravel from all liability for acts, omissions or any complaints or dissatisfaction arising from the services provided by the direct service providers on the Site advertised, as PortTRAVEL has no control or legal relationship over their personnel, equipment, operation or assets. In those situations where the Provider fails to provide its services you may seek any remedy allowed by applicable law against the Provider. Best Day guarantees you that it has high standards of service and will take special care in the selection of the Provider to avoid at all times the failure of the Provider. Likewise Port Travel shall not be responsible and You release PortTravel from all liability with respect to: The veracity of the photographs shown on your Site since they are only representative and do not guarantee that upon arrival, everything will be exactly the same as it is seen and described on the Site; The star category assigned to hotels and services, as they are based on Port Travel's and Direct Service Providers' interpretation and may differ from categories reported elsewhere; The travel service descriptions are updated by PortTravel to the best of its knowledge, but do not guarantee that everything will be exactly the same on arrival; Any failure on your part to obtain the required documentation for your trip such as, but not limited to, passports, visas, certificates etc. Any failure on your part to follow travel instructions including, but not limited to, airport departure times, hotel check-in and check-out dates and times, coupon redemption policies etc; Due to lack of financial conditions on the part of the Provider to provide the service. Regarding the terms and conditions and/or policies of the Direct Service Providers. Port Travel assumes no responsibility and You release PortTravel from all liability, as well as from all claims, costs, expenses or losses You may suffer including any personal or third party injury, accident or death, damage to personal belongings, loss of fun, anger, disappointment, distress or frustration, whether mental or physical, provided that they are the result of Any failure or fault on the part of the Direct Provider in providing the service. Any failure or fault on your part at the time of enjoying the contracted services. Any other event that is not under the direct control of PortTravel Any claim or written notification against PortTravel must be received no later than fourteen (14) days after the return of your trip; PortTravel reserves the right to refuse or carry out a commercial transaction with a Tourist User at any time; PortTravel reserves the right to cancel or change travel services at our discretion, but will attempt to replace them with comparable services; You will be responsible for verifying that the final Provider has special services such as access, amenities and services for people with different abilities, physical or otherwise, which we suggest you do prior to making your reservation. You will be responsible for reading and abiding by the terms and conditions and/or policies of the Final Service Providers. A full refund is not applicable in situations where the trip has to be cancelled, interrupted and/or postponed by PortTravel for reasons beyond its control (force majeure, such as, but not limited to, weather, hurricane, earthquake, acts of terrorism, etc.) and where PortTravel's contractual obligations to its suppliers do not allow it to obtain a refund of the amount paid or to be paid to the Supplier on the customer's behalf. In any case, at Port Travel's discretion, 30% of the total amount paid for the reservation may be withheld as an administrative expense. Despite the close communication established by PortTravel with the Suppliers announced here, there is a possibility that the validity of some prices has expired or is based on information erroneously provided by those Suppliers with which our database is fed. Notwithstanding this, PortTravel takes the precaution of verifying the rates that apply with each reservation. If the correct price is less than the amount quoted, PortTravel will apply the lower amount. If the correct price is higher than the amount quoted, your assigned Travel Consultant will contact you in a timely manner, informing you of the correct amount or recording the cancellation of the reservation at your request for not agreeing to the price increase, expressly disassociating PortTravel and its Providers from any liability or payment of compensation for inconvenience caused by such cancellation. In the event that the contracted services cannot be provided in part or in full by the Supplier, PortTravel may only, on certain occasions, arrange for the reimbursement of the appropriate amount on your behalf, with PortTravel being relieved of any further liability or commitment in cases where the reimbursement of the total or remaining amount is not made by the Supplier.
