Let's quickly dive into the details:

Key Details – Prashar Lake Trek

Key details for the Prashar Lake Trek

About Prashar Lake

Nestled in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, most visitors of the region tend to be unaware of this hidden gem . Also, since you can do the Prashar Lake trek throughout the year, it makes for a perfect getaway. A bonus makes this trek more special. Away from the hustle-bustle of your normal life, this is the place to go if you seek seclusion, tranquillity, and spectacular vistas.

Why Should I Trek?

The epitome of the trek – The Prashar lake – encapsulated by the Dhauladhar range in Kullu Valley , makes for a striking sight with its cobalt blue water. Also, Prashar Lake has a small floating circular island on its surface. And, locals will be quick to point out that there is no particular trend for the movement – it may be in the same place for months on end, or it might move several times in a month.

One of the best parts of this trek is that you get to choose your own starting point. Though the standard starting point is Baggi village near Mandi in Himachal Pradesh , you can push further ahead and trek lesser. And, depending on your experience in the wild, this trek is also doable without a guide, although for beginners it is highly recommended to take an informed person along with you .

Prashar Lake, A Winter Snow Trek

History of the Prashar Lake

The lake is held sacred to Prashar Rishi, who meditated here back. The temple itself was built in the 13 th Century by Raja Bank Sen of Mandi in the honor of the Rishi & thus, named the lake after him in riveting Himachali architecture.

Dev Bhoomi Himachal would not miss an opportunity for connect with the Higher Power! Of course, this makes sense because places as quiet and serene make for the perfect locations to meditate and connect with the deeper meaning of the universe. And, isn’t that what we tend to do as well, when visiting such lusciously heavenly places?

Mythological Connections

However, local legends also state that the lake itself was created by one of the Pandava brothers – Bhima when he was returning from Kurukshetra after Mahabharatha.

The Pandava brothers were accompanying Lord Kamrunag. Kamrunag was so captivated by the valley and the location that he decided to live there forever. Thus, the Bhima created the lake by ramming his elbow into one of the mountains. Also, locals share that no one knows the depth of the lake and many studies & divers have attempted to find the bottom point but returned with inconclusive results.

Prashar Lake Weather

Prashar Lake has a knack for unpredictable weather – from snow-laden winter months to rains & bright sunshine-filled days – since you can do this trek throughout the year, the weather at Prashar Lake will be synonymous to the weather in the Mandi region.

During the year, the highest average Prashar Lake temperature hovers around 21C, and the minimum temperature hovers around -8 C. It is essential to prepare in terms of unpredictable chill, even in the summer months. Thus, carrying the layering of clothes is the key to any successful trek in the Himalayas.

Well, you can indulge yourself in the Prashar Lake Snow Trek in winters.

Best Time to visit Prashar Lake

Although you can do this trek at any time of the year, the months of January and February are best to do this trek as the lake is almost frozen and covered with snow. There is a certain magnetism to being in untouched hills, with the snowy white blanket embellishing everything in sight, with the nip of the air making you feel all the more alive, somehow.

Did you know that you can also go for a winter Triund trek ?

However, if you’re so inclined to watch the magic of the floating island, post-monsoon makes for a great time to venture out. As it is during this time that the valley would be its lushest green self.

How to reach Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake can be reached via two main points in Himachal Pradesh:

  • Mandi – Bijani – Kamand – Baggi – Prashar Lake (50 Kms)
  • Kullu – Bhuntar – Bajaura – Shayari – Bagi – Prashar Lake (65 km)

While Mandi lies at a distance of around 430 Km from Delhi and 187 km from Chandigarh, Kullu is approximately 498 Kms from Delhi.

The route takes a similar time whether you start from Kullu or Mandi to reach the starting point of the trek, which is Baggi village. Here, I must highlight that you can drive further ahead of Baggi as well and reduce your trek duration or you can plan to hike through the woods to the Prashar lake from Baggi.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

Reaching Mandi

For ease of arriving, it is advisable to reach Mandi (lesser duration from Delhi) and push off for your journey ahead to Prashar lake from Mandi on the same day. Mandi is well connected by road as well as has a tonne of public transport options, as it lies en route Manali .

The nearest Airport from Prashar Lake is Bhuntar, approximately 60 KMs away. You will have to take a cab/bus to get to Mandi. However, if you have no plans to explore Mandi, it will be better to get the cab directly to Baggi village. The airport has limited connectivity and might face interruptions in operations, given weather fluctuations in the region.

No direct trains run to Mandi from Delhi or Shimla. However, you can take Shatabdi till Chandigarh and hire a cab/ take a bus till Mandi. You can also travel to Joginder Nagar train station as well.

When you travel to Prashar Lake from Delhi, the route from Delhi to Mandi is as follows Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat – Kurukshetra – Chandigarh – Sundernagar – Mandi

By Private Vehicle

Overall, the above journey will take you around 9 hours of driving time. However, there is a lot to explore in terms of Dhaba food along the way. So, enjoy your gluttonous pitstops. Having your own vehicle/self-drive cab is a great option.

You don’t need to worry too much about your car getting jacked while you’re out in the wild (who has the patience/ time/ energy!) and can be safely parked in Baggi.

Do not forget to check my article on must-have things to carry on a self-drive trip to Himachal .

By Public Transport

This, in my opinion, is a doable option. All buses heading to Manali from Delhi will stop at Mandi. You can book tickets on Redbus or HRTC. There are multiple options available – ranging from non-AC to semi sleeper/Volvo and even Mercedes buses. But, I’ll suggest you prefer HPTDC or HRTC buses over a private bus as there are more reliable and safe

The bus fare prices range from Rs 530 to Rs 1400.

Pagoda Style Prashar Rishi Temple

Reaching Baggi, the starting point of the trek

There are two options to reach Prashar Lake. One is by trek from Baggi village through the woods, and another is direct via road. The road goes all the way to the top and is about 20 km in length from Baggi Village. In winters, the only option is to either trek or drive to the last accessible point and then hike the rest of the journey to Prashar following the road.

Public Transport

A more reliable option over private vehicles (which can easily be parked in public spaces around Mandi) would be public transport.

A direct bus goes to Prashar lake, which leaves at 8 AM from Mandi bus stand. The same bus reaches Baggi village around 10:30 AM. For folks who want to trek should get off at Baggi village and start their trek. The cost of the bus ride will be around INR 50. The same bus leaves from Prashar lake at 1:30 PM and reaches Mandi at 4:30.

You can also book a cab to Baggi village or to Prashar lake but it’ll be a little costly in comparison to the bus. The cab costs INR 600 till Baggi and INR 1500-2000 to Prashar Lake.

Suggested Itinerary for Prashar Lake Trek

The Prashar Lake trek gives you the luxury of choosing your starting point. One can even head directly to the lake as well. However, that would be a waste of an opportunity to genuinely explore the hills.

I am of the viewpoint that a person gets into hiking/trekking by passing levels, just like in video games. Beginner levels are a must to get to the most difficult levels. So build up your skills and get connected with nature!

The following suggestive itinerary makes for the most bang-for-your-buck:

Day 1 | Delhi – Mandi

Reach Mandi by taking an overnight bus from Delhi. Alternatively, drive yourself/take a flight to Bhuntar – or whatever another way we discussed above. I hope to reach Mandi by 6/ 7 AM. Explore the surrounding region of Mandi & enjoy the quaint Himalayan Life.

Travel Tip : Hampta Pass is another interesting trek in Himachal Pradesh.

Day 2 | Mandi – Baggi Village – Prashar Lake

Catch the bus to Baggi village at 8 AM from Mandi Bus stand which will leave you at 10 AM in Baggi. There are few cafés where you can eat your breakfast as well as pack your lunch & shop for eatables.

Follow my YouTube Channel & Ask Travel Questions

This is a trek in the hills, amongst the trails –and you will not come across any commercialization. As always, do remember to carry your water bottles & fill them up before you start the trek towards Prashar Lake.

The journey from Baggi village to the lake will around 4 hours, depending on your fitness level and you will be covering a distance of approximately 7 km.

An aerial view of Prashar Lake

About the trail to Prashar Lake

Along the way, you’ll cross beautiful rivers and the densely forested Himalayan hills to reach the lake finally. The trek begins along the river basin. Fifteen minutes into the trail is your only water point – so fill up here – it will be necessary afterward.

From here, the trail will divert from the river, and your uphill climb begins. This climb is approximately 4 km and moderately steep. The trail will open up into beautiful meadows at certain places & you will get to experience beautiful vistas of snow-capped mountains.

The trail will cross a couple of settlements along the way, and you’ll get to experience/ observe the Himachali way of life. About 5 hours of the journey takes you to the lake – the first sight of the lake will be a moment to remember. Enjoy the company of nature & do take in the views at night. The stars and galaxies put on a beautiful show, just for those wanting to listen!

Travel Tip : You may like to do Kareri Lake trek if you have already been to Prashar Lake and interested in trekking.

Day 3 | Explore Around Prashar – Sukhasar Lake

Wake up as early as you possibly can. Yes, if you’re new to trekking, your body will be hurting, and you’d want nothing more than just snuggling in your cozy tent. But, you’re only cheating yourself of the spectacular sights that await.

The view from the lake encompasses three ranges of Himachali Himalayas – Pir Panjal Range to Dhauladhar range and the Lahaul & Spiti range. If you’re up to it, you can extend your adventure and try exploring another ancient lake – Sukhasar Lake, only 2 KMs away Prashar . This journey will take you around one and half an hour and worth the effort.

Also, once back to the campsite – go out and explore the old temple and immerse yourself in mythological history.

Day 4 | Prashar to Mandi – Delhi

Once back on the campsite – enjoy your morning cuppa chai and choose upon your return. You can either start trekking back to the Baggi Village in the morning and reach there till 2 PM as bus leaves from the Baggi Village around that time. Or you can directly catch the bus from Prashar lake itself, which will lead you to Mandi by around 5 PM. You can take the overnight bus to Delhi from Mandi.

Accommodation at Prashar Lake

You can rent a tent at Prashar Lake, which costs around INR 300-500 per person depending on the season. You can also book the Forest Rest House, which is 500 meters away from the lake (Contact Details:- Mr. Vir Singh 09459137877). The cost of a room is around 1000/- but you have to make a booking for it.

You can also carry your camping gear and pitch at some distance from the lake since it’s not allowed to pitch the tent near the lake. In terms of budget options, you can stay in the temple dorm, which is near the lake. You can contact the Pandit Ji, and he’ll arrange everything, and it won’t cost you a penny.

Travel Tip : Do check out these easy treks in Himachal Pradesh if you have already been to Prashar Lake.

Where to eat

There are no food options on the trek. However, a few options for food are available at the lake. There are a few cafés that serve tea, coffee, Maggi, Parathas, and Rajma Chawal. Rates are pretty normal.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Nearby ATMs

There are no ATMs near Prashar Lake. So, It’s better to carry enough cash. There are ATMs available in Mandi where you can withdraw money.

Mobile network in Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake does not have a very strong mobile network connection. Only BSNL and Jio networks are available, however, they, too, have intermittent connectivity.

On the trail itself, you’ll be hard-pressed to get a connection. But, isn’t that the point of a trek, anyway? Disconnect from the modern world, Y’all.

Other things to keep in mind regarding the Prashar Lake Trek

  • Do not forget to refer my list of things to carry on a trekking trip .
  • There is only one water source available in between the trek and there might be a chance that you miss that. So, carry a lot of water for the trek in a bottle.
  • Always carry a light woolen sweater/jacket for the trek. In winters, carry at least three layers of thermal clothing as temperature drops in negative in January.
  • In In the winter season, you need to have proper trekking shoes to do this trek as the trail is mostly covered in snow. While in summers you can trek with sports shoes but it would be a better choice to trek with trekking shoes.
  • Carry all your waste back to Mandi and be a responsible traveler and make this beautiful lake pollution-free.
  • Ensure you inform your friends/family of your whereabouts and itinerary before embarking in the journey. Your fun should not be a cause of headaches or anxiety for your loved ones!
  • If this is your first-ever trek (Congratulations, by the way), or if you’re a relatively new trekker and especially if you’re trekking in the winter months – it is advisable to have a guide with you.
  • Do not forget to checkout the responsible travel tips .

Getting Close to Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake trek is an often forgotten trail of the region. Partly because there is now full road connectivity leading up to the lake itself. However, the trail in itself is an extremely joyous experience, which surprises you a few times by opening up into spectacular views and shocking your system with what’s ahead.

It is something the whole family can enjoy together, even if you’re not the fittest of folks. Also, there are no concerns for AMS and thus, it makes for a relatively easier journey.

However, it still works, and there is a moderate climb associated with most of the journey. The views at the end, when earned, seem so much sweeter than just driving up to the lake.

The Complete Guide to Prashar Lake

prashar lake

Prashar lake isn’t one of those conventional treks, and this is what makes it one of the most worthwhile and special trails.

Every time I’m set to a lake trek, there are few things that I research about and check off the list without fail

Route map ✓

Accessibility of the lake  ✓

Shockingly, I was completely taken off the grid when there wasn’t any such information available regarding Prashar Lake. Completely intrigued by the idea of exploring the oval lake studded in the Dhauladhar ranges, I had started from Delhi.

The trek that can be completed within two days, is located in Kullu at an altitude of 8,900 ft. It’s a moderately easy climb, through an emerald expanse of forests and crystal clear rivulets flowing between them. Moreover, a floating island remains on the surface of the lake mirroring the flow of the lake. Further, the lake also offers a beautiful crescent-like view of the Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal, and Kinnaur mountain ranges.

It doesn’t take long for the snow to pile up around the lake during winters. As a matter of fact, the trek route is mostly closed during December. The highest recorded temperature here goes about 21°C while the winters have seen a drop up below -8°C.

To experience the winters in Prashar lake, September is the ideal month.

During summers , it sets the perfect picnic spot. With the carpet of forest greens on one side, and the chilling breeze from the lake on the other side. Like I had said before, to date no one has been able to fathom the depth of this Lake. Added along with these, are the interesting tales narrated by the localities. They had witnessed a storm so harsh that it could uproot the tallest of the trees and moreover these trees dissolve deep within the lake without even leaving a trace of it on the surface. Whether it’s true or not, the lake remains an untouched beauty because of these beliefs and tales.

Table of Contents

Historical Touch

Prashar lake is one of the most worthwhile and special trails. It’s like the painite gem of lakes, rarest of its kind and yet the most rewarding. This lake is said to be a dent created by the strongest Pandava brother Bhima.  After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas were returning victorious with Lord Kamrunag (God of rain). Having stopped by the region around Prashar lake. Kamrunag got so mesmerized by the tranquility, that he decided to stay here for longer. Bhima, with all due respect for the Lord’s decision, rammed his elbow in the mountain, creating the Prashar Lake. This is also one of the reasons why the depth of the lake was never known to anyone, as they believe it to be created by the strongest man in that era. Hence, the lake is also lovingly known as the Kamrunag Lake and the valley as Kamru Valley.

How To Reach Prashar Lake

You can reach the lake by trekking, or via the motorable road. Biaggi, the common starting point can be reached via Mandi as there is no direct public transportation available. Also, there are usually buses from Mandi, a district in Himachal Pradesh, to the lake. Public transport available is one of the most viable and feasible options.

There are two commonly taken routes to the lake,

  • Mandi – Bijani – Kamand – Biaggi – Prashar Lake
  • Kullu – Bhuntar – Bajaura – Shayari – Bagi – Prashar Lake

Mandi is located at considerable distances from the major cities,

Delhi to Mandi – 415 km

Jammu to Mandi – 300 km

Chandigarh to Mandi – 178 km

From all these major routes there are buses available to Mandi.

There are no direct trains available to Mandi and you can board the closest one from Chandigarh, where cabs and buses can be booked.

Whereas, air travel options include the Bhuntar airport that lies 56 km away from the Prashar lake. But, this is not a completely reliable option as the weather fluctuations decide the availability of flights and other services.

Trekking Route

One of the distinguishable features of the Prashar Lake trek is the array of options, in terms of choosing the base point.

The most commonly taken route is that of Baggi, which lies at a distance of 4-6 hours to Prashar Lake.

There are occasional buses available from Mandi to Baggi which would take around 2 and a half hours, without any interruptions.

Day 1 – Baggi to Prashar Lake

After reaching Baggi ensure that you have sufficient supplies and essentials in hand as there aren’t many shops around here.

You’d cross an approximate distance of 7 kilometers from the river basin at Baggi.

Water points are very few around here, so make sure you have extra water bottles in handy.

Almost 15 minutes into the trek would be the first water point.

After a small diversion from the rivulet the trail gets steeper and paves the way to alluring meadows.

Throughout the way, you’d cross settlements that show the humble Himachal way of life. The people here would be more than glad to welcome the trekkers with a warm cup of chai. There aren’t many halts en route and stopping by the humble homes of the localities was refreshing.

By evening you’d arrive at Prashar Lake and further explorations can be carried out the next day.

Day 2 – Exploring Prashar – Sukhsar Lake

Prashar Lake at night is a mesmerizing sight, blanketed by millions of glimmering stars.

The morning hours are when the lake gleams in all its glory though. With the mystic blue hues saturating the snow sprinkled greens surrounding it, it’s an image that’d remain etched in your mind forever.

Right next to the lake is the pagoda of the Prashar Rishi temple. Built-in the memory of Prasar Rishi who meditated here, the temple is the perfect blend of Himachali Architecture and minimalistic contemporary art.

It’s hard to miss any of these sights as the first rays of the daylight shine on your face. The sun feels like a foreign entity in the Himachals and just feeling some amount of sunlight is such a relief.

Wake up as early as possible, and have a stroll around the temple. This is a great spot for those who like to meditate, and it’s especially a really good start to the day ahead of you.

2 km trek from the Parashar lake is yet another natural spectacle, the Sukhsar Lake. The duration for this trek would extend to around 1 hour to 1 and a half hours depending on how used you are to trekking.

Day 3 – Prashar lake to Mandi – Delhi

Prashar Lake trek isn’t much of a complicated trail and it’s quite doable without a guide. But this also largely depends on your experience of trekking in the wilderness.

Returning to the campsite, you have sufficient time to relax after an entire day of trekking. No matter how many treks I’ve been to, at the end of the day I’d want to fall back to the comfort of a cozy bed.

Based on your preference you can choose to trek back to Baggi village or directly leave for Mandi from the bus available at Prashar lake.

There are overnight buses from Mandi. Within 11-12 hours you can expect to reach Delhi.

Where to Stay

The accommodation options around Prashar lake are very surprisingly feasible. With barely 300-500 Rs allocated for stay, you could afford a decent tent with necessary facilities.

In case you’re carrying your camping gear, you can pitch your tent at a safe distance from the lake. Pitching near the tent is not permitted as a safety precaution. So you might have to look for the right camping spot.

If you’re traveling with family, there are more options such as the Forest rest house which is located not more than 500 meters from the lake. It is safer and the perfect option for those looking for personal space. These houses require prior booking.

Yet another extremely feasible option is the temple dormitory facility which is home to every visitor. It doesn’t cost even a buck and guarantees a safe and comfortable stay.

You’d experience a rather hard time locating an ATM or petrol bunk around Prashar lake. So, ensure that you’re carrying sufficient cash and a full tank if you’re traveling by personal vehicle.

The roads to Prashar lake are well connected. so you would have to make small deviations en route if you want to fill up the tank.

In case you’re out of cash, make sure to withdraw sufficiently from ATM’s around Mandi.

One thing that you’d for sure run out of would be the network connectivity. Except for BSNL and Jio networks, there’s poor connectivity for other sims.

If unconventional treks are your calling, then you should try Jalori Pass in Himachal Pradesh

Parashar Lake Trek - A Complete Travel Guide

Parashar Lake Trek - A Complete Travel Guide

Parashar Lake, also known as Prashar Lake, is a small, serene body of water in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh nestled at a height of 2,730 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by the majestic Dhauladhar Range, lush green forests, and picturesque landscapes that are sure to take your breath away. Being one of the best trekking places in India , the Parashar Lake trek is a popular choice for both adventure seekers and nature lovers, who flock here throughout the year to witness the beauty of this holy lake. It is said that the true depth of the lake remains unknown, adding to its mysterious allure. The three-storied pagoda-like temple dedicated to Sage Prashar on its banks further adds to the spiritual significance of this place.

We have put together a comprehensive guide to help you plan your Parashar Lake Trek. From the best time to visit to the things to carry, we will cover everything you need to know to make your trip to this stunning destination a memorable one. So, get ready to embark on an exciting adventure and immerse yourself in the beauty of Parashar Lake!

Best Time to Go for Parashar Lake Trekking

While it is possible to complete the Parashar Lake trek at any time of the year, each season offers a unique experience for trekkers. Here's what you can expect during each season:

Summer Season

If you're seeking respite from the heat, then summer is the best time to visit the Parashar Lake trek. The weather is cool, and camping near the lake can be a memorable experience. However, it's crucial to carry sufficient water as dehydration can be a problem on the trek.

Monsoon Season

Although the trek is open throughout the year, it's particularly beautiful just after the monsoons and during snowfall. If you're interested in lush greenery, it is recommended to go just after the monsoons. Be aware that the trek trail may be muddy and slippery during this season, and leeches can be a nuisance. It's important to dress appropriately and wear proper trekking shoes.

Winter Season

The roads leading to the trek may be closed from December to February due to snowfall, but the Parashar Lake trek can still be undertaken during this season with proper snow trekking equipment. It's advisable to hire a trekking company or a local guide as the entire route is covered with snow, and accidents can happen if you're not careful.

Parashar Lake Weather

The weather at Parashar Lake is extremely unpredictable, ranging from snow in the winter months to rain and bright sunshine throughout the year. As the climate in this region is similar to that of Mandi, it is important to be prepared for sudden drops in temperature, even during the summer months. The average temperature at Parashar Lake ranges between -8°C to 21°C throughout the year. Therefore, it is crucial to pack layers of clothing to ensure a comfortable trek in the Himalayas.

Additionally, if you enjoy trekking in the snow, you can participate in the Parashar Lake Snow Trek during the winter season.

Parashar Lake Trek Route Details

The distance between the Parashar Lake trek and Bagi is approximately 10 km by road and 5-6 km via the forest route. To ensure you arrive at the lake on time, it's recommended to start your journey early. The trek to the lake takes around 3-4 hours each way, and you'll pass through several forested areas and meadows along the route.

If you plan to take the bus to Parashar, you'll need to reach Mandi by 9-9.30 a.m. On the other hand, if you plan to trek, it's best to start from Bagi no later than 1 p.m. This will give you enough time to reach Parashar by 5 p.m. before sunset. During the monsoon period, it is essential to be cautious about leeches on the trail while trekking. It is recommended to wear clothing that covers your arms and legs to avoid leech bites. It is also important to check your clothes and shoes periodically for any leeches.

Parashar Lake trek is considered easy and straightforward, but keep in mind that it mostly involves an uphill trek, which can be tiring. To avoid getting lost, it is advisable to take a local guide who knows the route. From Bagi village, you will need to walk on rocky terrain for 1-2 kilometres before reaching the forest trail, which stretches for an additional 3-4 kilometres. Once you enter the forest region, it is crucial to follow the right-side uphill path and not go straight on the trail to avoid getting lost.

Once you have covered 3-4 km, which may take around 1.5-2 hours, you will reach a small meadow. This spot offers a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. After crossing the meadow, you will need to climb for about 15-20 minutes to re-enter the tree-covered area. Following the climb, you will spot a few huts which indicate that you are nearing the end of the Parashar Lake trek. From here, Parashar Lake is barely 1 km away. You just need to walk towards the huts and buildings, and after 20-30 minutes, you will reach the main road.

A 5-10 minute walk on this road will lead you to the Parashar Lake enclosure. At this point, you have successfully completed the Parashar Lake trek and can choose to camp or stay overnight near the lake before departing the next day. If you plan to take the afternoon bus to Mandi, you can do so the next day. However, if you prefer trekking back, you should leave at 9 a.m. This will allow you to reach Bagi on time to catch the bus departing from Parashar to Mandi.

Things to Carry

  • Carrying a water bottle is essential while trekking as it helps to keep the body hydrated, especially in cold temperatures where sweating may go unnoticed.
  • Energy bars, dry fruits, and chocolates are convenient and easy-to-consume snack options to keep you going during the trek.
  • A torch or flashlight is a must-have, especially for night treks.
  • Hiking shoes with thick soles and a walking stick for support are necessary for a safe and comfortable trek.
  • Water-resistant trekking pants are a must when crossing rivers or streams.
  • Don't forget to pack sunscreen, sunblock, and lip balm to protect your skin from UV rays.
  • A medical or first-aid kit is essential as there may be no medical assistance available in the mountains.
  • Additionally, it is a good idea to pack soaps, hand sanitiser, and flip-flops.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • There is only one water source available during the trek, which you could miss, so it's recommended to carry a sufficient amount of water in a bottle.
  • Regardless of the season, it's advisable to carry a light woollen sweater or jacket for the trek. During winter, you should carry at least three layers of thermal clothing as temperatures can drop below freezing in January.
  • Trekking shoes are essential during the winter season as the trail is mostly covered in snow. While sports shoes are suitable for summer treks, it's better to wear trekking shoes.
  • Make sure to carry all your waste back to Mandi and be a responsible traveller by keeping the lake pollution-free.
  • Before embarking on your journey, inform your friends or family of your whereabouts and itinerary to avoid causing them unnecessary anxiety or stress.
  • If you're a first-time trekker or relatively new to trekking, especially during the winter months, it's advisable to hire a guide for assistance.

Despite the lack of road connectivity leading up to the lake, the Parashar Lake trek is a delightful experience that often goes unnoticed. With surprising views and a mix of challenging and easy terrain, this trek is perfect for families of all fitness levels to enjoy together. Prashar Lake Trek: DIY Guide

Parashar – or Prashar Lake – is a lake located in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. One can either choose to take the Prashar Lake bus from Mandi that runs every morning at 8 am or do the Prashar Lake trek which rewards you with a beautiful trail amidst a rhododendron forest, meadows surrounded by pine trees and views of the beautiful snow-capped mountains. The Prashar Lake trek height is 2,730 meters or 8,950 feet above sea level. Since the lake falls above the treeline, it can be termed an alpine lake. There are many mythological stories associated with the lake.

Having recently found an innate affinity to do as many treks as possible since the Triund trek , I decided to ditch the option of the bus and do the entire Prashar Lake trek instead. This Prashar Lake trek blog will give you the most answers you have while planning the trek yourself, as well as a simple Prashar Lake trek itinerary .

I took an overnight bus from Mandi to Delhi and at 7 am, I found myself in the town with the entire day ahead of me. I could’ve hopped onto the 8 am bus to reach the Prashar Lake starting point at Baggi village, but I was too tired from the overnight journey and decided to replenish before starting the Prashar Lake trek the next day. I landed at a hole-in-the-wall sort of a place and bagged myself a double bed with an attached bathroom and a great view of the mountains in just 180/night. This is a dharamshala of sorts in the complex of the Bhootnath Temple. This temple is also a massive attraction during Shiv Ratri and one of Himachal’s biggest pooja is held here during the festival.

How to go to Prashar Lake

As mentioned before in this Prashar Lake trek guide, if your question is “ how to go to Prashar Lake “, then there are two answers for you. One option is to take the road leading all the way up to Prashar Lake. There is a local HRTC bus from Mandi to Prashar Lake that runs every morning at 8 am and starts back for Mandi at 1 pm. So if your plan is to visit Prashar Lake in one day, this might be the best option for you. You can also take your own car to Prashar Lake.

Mandi to Prashar Lake distance is about 50 kilometres. The roads are mostly well built on the state highway, except for the last 10 kilometres where you will find a lot of potholes and some off-road patches as well. All in all, it is a very doable drive to Prashar Lake.

mandi to prashar lake bus hrtc daily 8 am

Driving or taking the bus is often the easiest answer to your “how to visit Prashar Lake” question. But if you’re anything like me, and would ditch the road for a few kilometres of a trek, then the Prashar Lake trek is a good option for you.

  • To start the Prashar Lake trek from Delhi, get the overnight Volvo or ordinary HRTC buses running to Mandi.
  • If you reach Mandi before 8 am, you can board the local bus going to Prashar Lake and get off at the Prashar Lake trek starting point at Baggi village.

Prashar Lake Trek – Route, Distance and Duration

Once you have reached the Prashar Lake trek starting point at Baggi village, just ask any locals around for the trail that follows the Prashar Lake trek. The Prashar Lake trek starts along the basin of the mostly dried up Beas river. We made our way winding across the huge rocks and crossing a few water streams to make it to the rhododendron forest leading up to the lake. The Prashar Lake trek route is visible well and just keep following the trail.

baagi village prashar lake trek starting point

About two hours into the Prashar Lake trek, you will come across a massive lush green meadow with snow-capped mountains in front and the remaining forest behind. I spent an hour here soaking the glorious sun in. After crossing the second patch of the woods, it was a matter of a few minutes before you will find ourselves in the vicinity of Parashar or Prashar Lake.

If you’re doing the Prashar Lake trek solo as I did, you don’t need to worry. The Prashar Lake trek route is well defined. And in the chance you get lost and are unable to find your way, you are sure to pass several shepherds grazing their cattle or villagers going up to the lake to pay their respects. Prashar Lake trek solo is very doable. Although there are several Prashar Lake trek packages available online, it is the ultimate do-it-yourself (DIY) trek.

prashar lake trek time

The Prashar Lake trek distance is about 5 kilometres from the Prashar Lake trek starting point at Baggi village. The Prashar Lake trek difficulty level is easy and you only need a basic level of fitness to complete this trek. Make sure you carry good quality trekking shoes and a snugly fit rucksack to make the journey more comfortable. You can easily do the Prashar Lake trek in one day. The Prashar Lake trek duration will be about 4 to 6 hours, depending on your physical fitness.

Prashar Lake Trek – Best Time to Visit

The best time to do Prashar Lake trek – or any other Himalayan trek for that matter – has to be in the spring or autumn season. This is when the weather is just about right and it isn’t too hot or too cold. Ideally, Prashar Lake best time is from March to April and October to November. This is also when you can see the far-off snowclad mountain peaks of the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar ranges clearly.

prashar lake in june

However, the best time to go to Prashar Lake can also be year-round since the lake changes its beauty with each passing season. I did the Prashar Lake trek in April and was rewarded with a rhododendron forest in full bloom and clear skies, moderate temperature and clearly visible mountain peaks in the distance. Prashar Lake trek in March would also be similar. The Prashar Lake weather goes not beyond 30 degrees during the day and at night, it can touch 0 degrees celsius as well. So make sure you are prepared for the cold nights.

Also consider: Waichin Valley Trek near Parvati Valley.

The Prashar Lake trek in April has another advantage – as luck would have it, my plans for the trek had coincided with the birthday celebration of Prashar Rishi’s birthday and this mela or festival is called Saura Panjoo . The devtas from other parts of Himachal had come to visit Prashar Rishi on palanquins. I saw the devtas ‘dance’ and ‘hug’ each other. There was traditional Himachali Dham and it was definitely the best time to visit Prashar Lake. You can witness another festival or fair called Saranauhali if you do the Prashar Lake trek in June . Check with locals for the exact dates of these festivals before planning your trip as the dates change each year according to the Lunar Calendar.

Prashar Lake in December is a whole different world. The meadows are all covered with snow and icicles form at the edge of the Prashar Rishi temple. However, the Prashar Lake trek in December or any winter month can be tricky and difficult. So either consider taking a Prashar Lake trek guide along or choose to do a road trip to the lake instead.

Prashar Lake in monsoons from July to September turns all green due to incessant rains. Many times clouds descend onto the rolling meadow hills and wildflowers can be seen everywhere. It is definitely a magical time to visit the lake, but trekking must be avoided during monsoons at all costs due to sudden weather changes. Consider doing a road trip instead.

Prashar Lake Trek – Where to Stay

My favourite part about going on treks has to be the camping bit. There’s nothing like setting up your own home, sleeping under dotted skies and rolling up in a ball to keep yourself warm. The bright warm sunrise always makes up for the insane strong winds that threaten to take my tent away throughout the night. The rush you get creating a home in the lap of wilderness far away from the luxury of comfort is unparalleled. Thus, soon I headed towards the highest clearing near the Lake to pitch my tent. I found a friendly little pup who faithfully completed this last leg of the Parashar Lake trek with me.

The next morning I woke up not to my alarm, not the sunlight, not to the sound of the chirping birds. I woke up to the tail of a horse hitting my tent repeatedly. I opened my tent up to the view of glorious sunrise and a number of horses grazing all around me.

Although I had carried and pitched my own tent, you don’t need to go through the burden of carrying that extra weight on the Prashar Lake trek. There are several shacks that rent out sleeping bags and tents and a minimal cost. So if the question of “where to stay at Prashar Lake” has been bogging your mind, you don’t need to worry about this at all.

These shacks also double as the places to eat in Prashar Lake . The dhaba-shacks provide basic meals for your Prashar Lake stay. The most common food at Prashar Lake available is rajma chawal, aloo paratha, Maggi and bread omelette. In fact, most shacks will give you stay and all 3 meals at just 1000 rupees per person per day. Pretty sweet deal, right?

To this day, no one knows how deep the lake is!

Prashar Lake Trek in 2000 INR (You Do Not Want to Miss this)

' src=

An offbeat trek in Himachal Pradesh, Prashar Lake trek was my second trek and was worth all the effort. This trek has a gorgeous trail that lies in the valley of the Dhauladhar range and is one of the perfect weekend trips from Delhi .

On this trek, you will not only encounter some thick, lush forests but also views of snow-capped mountains. That’s not all, one of my best parts about Prashar lake trek is also the temperature and the views at the night.

Camping beside the Prashar lake, surrounded by ultimate darkness, with the stars and moon lighting up the sky for you. Honestly, the night sky is breathtaking here and so is the sunrise. There was just something magical about watching the sunrise slowly from behind the Himalayan mountains and I can assure you that you would love every moment of it.

So, to help you prepare for this ultimate trek, I have prepared this guide. From the temperature at Prashar Lake to traveling from Mandi to Prashar lake, you will learn everything you need to know about this trek in this post.

Prashar Lake Trek

Perched at an altitude of 2730 meters, Prashar Lake is located in the Mandi district. Since Prashar lake has a pleasant temperature throughout the year, this is one the treks that you could do throughout the year, making it the perfect weekend getaway from cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, so on.

The trek takes you through the Dhauladhar mountain range and even offers views of Kinnaur and Pir Pinjal mountain ranges from the summit. With gorgeous meadows, majestic views, and the enchanting Prashar Lake at the summit, this trek has everything.

So, if you are looking for a little seclusion while enjoying amazing vistas then trekking to Prashar lake is the best choice.

Why Should You Visit Prashar Lake?

Dhauladhar Range from Prashar

Unlike the Kheerganga Trek (also in Himachal), most people haven’t heard about Prashar lake because it is not a popular tourist destination. So, you might be wondering what is so great about Prashar lake that you should plan a trekking trip here.

Well, there are a couple of reasons actually.

With its cobalt blue water, Prashar lake makes an enchanting sight for most people. Also, one of the most fascinating things about Prashar Lake trek is that you will encounter the Phumdi island in the lake. This is a floating mass of greenery that keeps changing its location in the lake.

On our 1-day stay itself, we saw this floating island make a complete round of the lake and it was quite fascinating to watch.

Apart from the lake itself, the views are quite astounding here. Both sunrise and sunset are quite magical to watch and will make you feel like you are in paradise. Plus, the night sky is really marvelous here as you can see the stars and the milky way galaxy due to low light and air pollution.

So, if you are a nature lover and are looking to spend some time away from the distractions of a city, then a visit to the Prashar lake is the best decision for you.

History of Prashar Lake

Prashar Temple

At the summit, you will also find a 13 th -century temple built which was built by Raja Bank Sen of Mandi. The temple was built in honor of Prashar Rishi and uses traditional Himachal architecture and is the perfect place for meditating.

Legends about Prashar Lake

There are two popular legends regarding the lake that is often told by the locals.

In one version, it is believed that Prashar lake was formed by one of the Pandava brothers – Bheema when they were returning back from the war of Kurukshetra. It is said that they were accompanied by Lord Kamrunag who fell in love with this valley and decided to live here.

So, Bheema used his elbow to form a lake here which is why it is said to have the shape Bheema’s elbow and the valley is often known as Kamru valley.

Another fascinating version is that sage Prashar used to meditate here in ancient times and this lake a barrier to keep the demons away from the human world. One day, the water of the Prashar lake started overflowing for a few days and threatened to drown the entire region.

In order to stop the demons once and for all, a devotee volunteered to go into the lake and defeat the demons. He stayed inside the lake for a couple of days and no one knew if he was alive or not. Finally, on the 5 th day, he came out of the lake, and the lake water receded to its original location.

Prashar Lake Weather

Prashar lake has unpredictable weather so you can experience unexpected rain or snow anytime due to the dense forest region. The temperature at Prashar lake usually ranges between -8 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius but you can go on this trek throughout the year.

So, when you are trying to get an idea of the weather for the trek, you simply have to take a look at the weather predictions in the Mandi region. This is why you need to be always prepared when planning for the Prashar lake trek as the weather can unexpectedly change here.

Best Time to Visit Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake and Temple

While Prashar lake has a pleasant temperature throughout the year, each month will offer you a different experience on this trek. Take a look at what you can expect weather-wise on the trek in each season.

Summer Season (March to June)

Ideally, the temperature in Prashar lake is pleasantly warm although the nights are still cold. So, if you wish to escape the heat of the northern plains then this is definitely a good time to plan the trek.

You can even set up your tent beside the lake and enjoy the cool, pleasant breeze. However, make sure you carry some warm clothes as you will experience a cool temperature at night when camping beside the Prashar lake. Also, carry sufficient water for the trek as you won’t find any spots to fill water on the trail.

Winter Season (October to February)

The trek is still possible in winters as a snow trek but you need to be prepared for the cold weather. The temperature at Prashar lake drops at night and it often snows at the lake at night time. This is especially true for the months of January and February and you will experience freezing weather during these months.

Yes, that’s right! Due to heavy snowfall, the entire lake freezes at times. And if the weather becomes worse around Prashar lake, then the valley gets cut off from the main district till the weather clears up.

You would definitely want a local guide if you plan to do the trek in winters and also good winter trekking boots along with other essentials. So, plan the trek carefully during the winter months.

Monsoon Season (July to September)

For people who don’t mind rainfall, monsoon season could be the perfect time to do the Prashar lake trek. The entire valley will be covered in lush greenery and the lake itself will look extremely gorgeous. Plus, the weather will be cool and pleasant.

Personally, I find September to be the best month to visit Prashar lake because the rainfall isn’t as prominent and the weather is still cool and nice. So, if you wish to experience green mountains but sunny skies then September is the perfect time to do the trek.

Well, one of the most important things to note is that there are two routes to reach Prashar Lake in Mandi district. Here are the two routes that you can usually follow:

Mandi – Bijani – Kamand – Bagi – Prashar Lake (50 km)

Kullu – Bhuntar – Bajaura – Shayari – Bagi – Prashar Lake (65 km)

If you are planning to do a weekend trip from Delhi to Prashar lake, then you have both the routes available. Mandi is located around 426 km and Kullu is located around 495 km from Delhi. So, it will take you almost the same amount of time to reach any of the two destinations and then make your way to Bagi village which is the starting point of this trek.

Another important thing to note is that if you are getting your own vehicle from Chandigarh or Delhi, then you can drive to the Prashar lake. There is a well-constructed road that leads to Prashar lake and can be used to reduce your trek time as well.

Reaching Mandi

Mandi is located around 50 km from Prashar lake and is your first main stop, regardless of where you start from.

Since Mandi is a major hub in Himachal Pradesh, there are several travel options available for you:

The closest airport to Mandi is the Kullu Manali Airport, at a distance of 60 km. You get several flights from Delhi, Shimla, and Chandigarh. If you are short on time, then you can take a flight and then reach Mandi. However, if you aren’t interested in exploring Mandi, then you can directly reach Bagi village.

From the airport, you can take a local taxi to reach Bagi village which is around 44 km from the airport. A taxi will cost you around 700 – 1000 INR for this journey.

The closest railway station to Mandi is the Joginder Nagar Railway Station, at a distance of 55 km. You will get regular trains from Chandigarh to Joginder Nagar and you will get trains from the rest of India to Chandigarh.

From this railway station, you can take a taxi to reach Mandi which will cost around 700 – 1000 INR.

If you are planning the trip from Delhi to Prashar lake, then you will be following the route to reach Mandi: Delhi – Sonipat – Panipat – Kurukshetra – Chandigarh – Sundernagar – Mandi.

You can choose to take your own vehicle to Mandi and will be able to cover the distance between Delhi and Mandi in just 9 hours. On the way, you will come across several good dhabas where you can stop for some delicious and filling meals.

At Bagi, you can safely park your vehicle and don’t have to worry about it being getting stolen.

You will experience a smooth road till Kiratpur Sahib, after that the roads will be a mixture of bad and average until you reach Mandi.

Public Transportation

A better option would be to take a bus from Delhi or Chandigarh to reach Mandi. You will find both HRTC and private buses for this route as all the buses to Manali stop at Mandi on the way. From non-AC to semi-sleeper to Volvo buses, you will find all options available on this route.

Personally, I always use HRTC buses as they are cheaper and safe and will cost anywhere between 550 INR and 1400 INR for Delhi to Mandi route. From Delhi, it will take you around 12 hours to reach Mandi and 6 hours from Chandigarh.

Mandi to Prashar Lake

Prashar Lake Trek

You can cover the distance from Mandi to Prashar lake in several different ways. If you are planning to trek to Prashar lake, then you need to reach the starting point of the trek which is Bagi village. Bagi is approximately 40 km from Mandi and takes around 2 – 2.5 hours via road.

One of the cheapest ways to reach Prashar Lake from Mandi is by taking the direct bus from Mandi Bus Stand at 7:45 a.m. This bus usually arrives between bay 1 and bay 2 and you can always ask the local bus conductors about the status of this bus. The cost of this bus ticket is around 88 INR and there is no way to get advance tickets for this bus.

It will take you around 3.5 – 4 hours on this bus and you will get a 15-minute rest stop on the way.

For people who wish to trek from Bagi to Prashar lake, you have the option of taking this bus to Bagi village. It will take around 3 hours to reach the village and then you can get down to start the trek. The bus ticket will cost you around 60 INR for this journey.

From Mandi, you can easily get a taxi to Bagi village for 800 – 1000 INR. So, if you end up missing the early morning bus to Prashar lake, then you can simply hire a taxi to take you to the starting point of the trek.

If you don’t wish to trek, then you can always hire a taxi to take you to Prashar lake for 1100 – 1300 INR. It will take you around 3 hours to reach in a cab. You could also book a roundtrip for 2000 – 2500 INR and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Kullu to Prashar Lake

From Kullu, Bagi village is around 54 km. So, if you are reaching Kullu first, then you can take a local cab to reach Bagi village or Prashar lake. A taxi will cost you around 800 – 1000 INR for Bagi village and around 1200 – 1400 INR for Prashar lake.

You can even book a roundtrip cab for Prashar lake for 2500 – 3000 INR.

Suggest Itinerary for Prashar Lake

Although you have the option of taking the road to reach the Prashar lake via driving, it is definitely more fun to trek to the lake. Here is a suggestive itinerary that you can follow to make the most of your time here:

Day 1: Delhi to Mandi

If you are starting from Delhi for Prashar lake trek, you can take an overnight bus to Mandi. Another option is to take a cab or drive yourself to reach Mandi by 5 – 6 a.m.

Day 2: Mandi to Bagi Village to Prashar Lake

From Mandi, you can catch the 7.45 a.m. bus to Prashar lake that takes around 4 hours to reach. If you are planning to do the trek from Bagi village, then you can get down at Bagi. From here, Prashar lake is only 1 hour via road.

From Bagi, you can start hiking on the Prashar lake trail and it will ideally take you 3-4 hours to reach the lake, depending on your fitness level.

At Prashar lake, you can camp for the night and enjoy the gorgeous views in this valley.

Note: If you have an extra day, then you can also head to the nearby Sukhasar lake which is just 2 km away from the Prashar lake. The views around this area will not let you get bored so you can visit the lake on a long weekend as well.

Day 3: Prashar Lake to Mandi to Delhi

The next day, you can start the trek back to Bagi village after enjoying breakfast and then take the 2.15 p.m. bus to Mandi. Another option would be to just enjoy your time at Prashar lake and then take the 1.15 p.m. bus leaving from Prashar lake to Mandi.

You will reach Mandi by 5 p.m. from where you can take a local or Volvo bus to reach Delhi, Kullu, or Chandigarh.

Prashar Lake Trek Route

Prashar Lake

From Bagi, the forest trek route to Prashar lake is around 6-7 km and will take approximately 4 hours to complete. This is mostly an uphill trek route so it can be a little tiring. It would be advisable to take a local guide as you can easily get lost in the forest.

Here is the detailed route map of this trek so that you don’t face any difficulty.

The trek starts along the river basin which is a little rocky. You will have to walk on this path for around 15-20 minutes and then you will come across the sole water point on your trail. Fill up your water from here, if needed.

From this point, your trail will divert from the river and you will need to move uphill. You need to keep climbing uphill for 3-4 km through the forest region. Remember, it is always an uphill path and not the simpler trail that you will see in front of you.

After completing 3-4 km, you will come across a beautiful meadow. From here, you will be able to enjoy the view of the surrounding mountain peaks. You can rest for a few minutes here. After crossing the meadow, you will re-enter a short forest region and will be climbing continuously for 10-15 minutes.

After completing the climb, you will see a few settlements in the form of huts and fields. From here, Prashar lake is only a 15 to 20-minute walk. Keep moving in the direction of the huts and you will see the Prashar road in the distance.

You need to walk for 5-10 minutes on this road and you will reach the Prashar lake enclosure. The trek is finally complete and you can camp beside the lake for the night to enjoy the views.

ATMs in and Around Prashar Lake

There are no ATMs near Prashar lake or even Bagi village so, make sure you carry a sufficient amount of cash with you. If you wish to withdraw cash for the trek then Mandi is the best option as there are several ATMs available there.

Personally, I would advise you to withdraw money from your home city.

Mobile Network in and Around Prashar Lake

You won’t find any mobile network on the trek but that can be fun so, no worries. Also, to keep yourself from getting lost, make sure that your GPS is working as it will let you see if you are moving in the right direction or not.

At the Prashar lake, BSNL, Jio, and Airtel provide decent connectivity so you can easily make calls. However, you might experience an intermittent Internet connection over there.

Where to Stay near Prashar Lake

Camping at Prashar Lake

Although when I went for this trek, it wasn’t as popular but slowly, it is gaining recognition. As a result, there are several accommodation options available near Prashar Lake.

Here are a few options to consider when planning your weekend trip to Prashar lake.

Camping Near Prashar Lake

In recent years, several camping sites have cropped around Prashar lake that offer great views, good food, and will offer you warmth and comfort at night. These camps can cost you anywhere between 1000 – 2000 INR per person including all your meals.

There is a public washroom available on the site that you can use to brush wash yourself a little.

There is a campsite, Krishna Camps, that has its private washroom and toilet but it is located 2 km away from the lake. So, if you don’t mind being a little away from the lake then this is a great place to stay at.

Apart from that, you could always take your own camping equipment and set up a tent for yourself in the designated independent tents area, outside the lake enclosure

Prashar Temple Dharamshala

If you are looking for a super cheap mode of accommodation then the Dharamshala by the temple is perfect for you. They have dormitory-type rooms and you can talk to the locals at the temple to open a room for you to sleep at night.

One major disadvantage of staying in the Dharamshala is that you have no idea when they last cleaned and washed the place, including the blankets. Plus, if there are more travelers looking for a sleeping place, they will end up sharing the room with you. Toilets are again a huge problem as you will be left to your own devices to find a suitable spot in the nearby forest to do your business.

Guest Houses

Recently, I traveled to Prashar Lake again and found that new accommodation sites are now available inside the enclosure. There are a few guest houses that offer good view of the lake and will provide you with a private room with bathroom and meals. So, if you wish to stay beside the lake, this is a good option for you too.

Public Washroom

PWD Rest House and Forest Reserve Guesthouse

You will find that PWD Rest House and Forest Reserve Guesthouse are the best accommodation options available near Prashar lake. This is because the rooms are clean and tidy and they have clean washrooms with hot water accessibility for you to use as well. However, these guest houses need to be booked in advance and cost a minimum of 1000 INR per room, the prices can vary depending on the season.

These guest houses are just a 10-minute walk from the Prashar lake and offer the best views. Here is how you can book these guest houses in advance:

  • You can contact 01905-222151 or email at 01905-222151 to book a room at the PWD guest house.
  • For the forest guest house, you can reach out to the DFO office Mandi at 01905 – 235360 or RFO Kataula at Tel: 01905 – 269469.

Hotels near Prashar Lake

There have been a few new hotel developments close to the Prashar Lake itself. So, you can contact them in advance to book a clean and hygienic room for yourself.

These hotels and homestays are just 7-10 km from the Prashar lake and can be reached via trek or a drive. You will find information on how to book these hotels when you search for hotels on Google.

Food Options in and Around Prashar Lake

There are no food options on the Prashar lake trek route. So, make sure you pack lunch for yourself and enough snacks and water to keep you energized. The last village where you could buy food and some snacks is the Bagi village.

At Prashar lake, you will find a few dhabas and camping sites around the lake. However, the food options at these dhabas are usually limited to Maggi, Rajma Chawal, etc. and costs around 70 – 150 INR for a meal. You could try your luck at the campsites here but there is no guarantee of food if you are not camping with them.

Complete Cost for the Prashar Lake Trip

Prashar Lake

A 2-day weekend trek to Prashar lake will cost you between 2000 and 4000 INR.

The ordinary HRTC bus from Delhi will cost you around 550 INR. So, you can keep 1100 INR aside for the to and fro travel from Delhi to Mandi.

From Mandi, if you take the bus to Bagi village and then back to Mandi, then you will spend at most 180 INR.

A taxi will cost you 250 INR per person (5-seater) if you miss the bus to Bagi village. At the Prashar lake, you can rent a tent for at most 500 INR and a meal will cost you at most 150 INR.

So, the total trek cost will come out to be 1100 + 250(taxi) + 90 (bus back to Mandi) + 500 (tent) + 150*5 = 2200 INR.

I did the entire Prashar Lake trek in just 1800 INR as I took my own camping equipment and snacks for the trail.

  • If you're looking for a weekend trek from Delhi, then Prashar Lake is perfect!
  • Prashar Lake Trek is one of the easiest hidden gems in the trails of Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, leading up to the revered Prashar Lake.

Situated 45 km north of Mandi, frozen in winters and a visual spectacle otherwise; Prashar Lake is a secret well kept in the Himachal district. Perfect for first-time trekkers, the lake is located at a height of 8,900ft above sea level. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, the treks offer a 180-degree view of the Kinnaur, Pir- Panjal, Dhauladar ranges. The lake is fenced with tall Cedar trees and has a small floating island in the middle. The depth of the lake remains unknown while it is considered sacred because masses believe that sage Prashar meditated there, giving the lake its name. That is probably the reason the locals have been spotted saying 'no man can live there, it is a place for the gods!'.

Prashar Lake

Prashar Rishi is a beautiful location in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. I have done my visit to Prashar Rishi in Jan 2021

about me

By Rohit Bhawani - Truly Explorer

Prashar lake, mandi.

The lake is situated at an altitude of 2,730 m (8,960 ft) above ocean level. With dark blue waters, the lake is held hallowed to the sage Prashar and he is respected to have reflected there. Encircled by snow-covered pinnacles and peering down on the quick streaming waterway Beas, the lake can be approached from Mandi or from Bajaura in Kullu Valley. The two routes are 49 km (30 mi). There is a floating island in the lake, which is a typical can found all around the world. The floating island moves in every direction in the lake. The Floating land covers 7% of the region of the lake. The sanctuary was build in the thirteenth century. Nobody knows the depth of this lake. It is said that a diver can’t decide its depth.

“Parashar Lake has a Floating island that changes positions. The island is considered a secretive component by numerous individuals”

Story Behind Lake

This Lake is known for the Prashar Rishi. Prashar Rishi Maditated on the banks of Prashar Lake. Bheem created this lake ( Bheema was one out of 5 Pandavas). After having their war at Kurukshetra ( Mahabharat) all the five Pandavas were returning with dev kamrunaag.

When all of them reached the Prashar Lake. Dev Kamrunaag loved that place and decided to live there forever. So Bheem rammed their elbow on the ground and made this holy Prashar lake.

Starting Point :- Panarsa End Point:- Prashar Lake Time Taken:- 5-6 Hrs Distance in km:- 16- 17 km  Altitude:- 2730 m

If you don’t want to  do trek to Prashar lake, than you can go directly to lake by road. it take around one hour to reach at the top from the Panarsa.

Best time to visit Prashar lake

On what time you want to visit Prashar lake is totally up to you. in my case I visited Parashar in the month of January. At that time most of the mountains were covered with snow and we were expecting snowfall any time.

If you visit in summers then you can enjoy cold weather there. And if you visit in Monsoon you can enjoy beautiful greenery there.

The conclusion is, every weather is good for visiting there according to me.

49 kilometres north of Mandi, in the Himachal Pradesh state's Kullu Valley, is where you'll find the Parashar Lake. It is reported that the sage Parashar meditated here. The wooden carvings on a three-story Pagoda-style temple on the lakeshore give it a very traditional appearance. The lake has a tranquil perspective, and the water looks to be completely blue. The fact that Parashar Lake's location varies throughout the course of the year is another intriguing aspect of the lake.

This winter journey to Prashar Lake involves ascending some challenging slopes. The Prashar Lake walk (2,620m) is a famous hike in the heart of Himachal Pradesh that brings visitors to a frozen lake that is a wonderful example of breathtaking beauty. During the day, the temperature fluctuates from 13 to 18 degrees, and at night, it drops to 0 to 7 degrees.

To see the lake and the temple, one must trek 500 metres to the top of one of the little hills that surround the lake. To reach there, you'll have to drop a little. There are certain things that are prohibited within the main temple complex, including shoes, leather belts, and handbags. A Parikrama around the lake is possible (walking around). There is a fair conducted here every year in the month of June. People travel from all of the nearby villages. The adjacent little mountain streams that feed this lake.

Itinerary of trek

We will all assemble at Bhuntar where we will board our vehicles taking us to the road end to start our trek. After saying farewell to our vehicle we begin our trek through open fields and begin with our climb to Parashar Lake. Today’s trail will take around 4-5 hours to complete and will cover around 8 kms. The initial part of the trail consists of a steep ascent which takes about half an hour to complete. As you keep progressing the trail eases a bit and the gradient becomes more gradual and more comfortable to trek on. Flora around the trail is mostly rhododendron. After crossing the forest area the view opens up to a meadow where you can relax and take in the view of the great Dhauladhar ranges. After the meadow we enter into another forest and the trail gradually keeps ascending. We will get on to the motorable road for a short duration and then again trek on the kacha rasta. After the last few bits of climbing we will reach the meadow of Parashar lake. From there you can get a clear view of the Dhauladhar and on clear days get a magnificent view of peaks such as Mukar Beh, Sikar Beh, Friendship peak, Mukila and Hanuman Tibba. When we reach the campsite we will be welcomed with some appetizers and tea. Overnight stay in tents at our campsite.

Wake early in the morning and witness the awe inspiring sunrise from Parashar. This a perfect setting to take some epic photographs to show back home of the great experience. Spend some time near the lake and then return to the campsite for breakfast. After having our breakfast we will soon depart for Baghi. We will start our climb from the motorable road then enter into the forest area where we will take our trail down to Baghi. Today’s trek is mostly easy and downhill so it does not take much effort to complete. We will reach around 1-2 pm and then we will be dropped off at Bhuntar from there you can arrange your travel or accommodation.

➽ preparation for trek.

As you well know, the great Himalayan trek is one that requires careful preparation, a strategy that allows for enough flexibility to adapt to whatever challenges may arise.

Therefore, here are some things to consider before setting out on your trek:

⦿ Physically – You should start working out at least a month before signing up for a program if you want to be physically prepared for the rigours of a journey. Strengthen your legs by jogging and working out regularly to increase your stamina. To better acclimatise to the environment and increase your resilience on the walk, you should give up smoking and undertake breathing exercises twice a day. Engage in vigorous physical activity, such as playing sports, doing Yoga, or running.

⦿ Mentally –

Getting in shape physically is essential, but mental preparation is just as crucial for a successful walk. Take time to enjoy your regular activities, maintain a healthy diet and sleep schedule, and unwind before embarking on a hike. Predictions regarding the journey should not cause mental worry. Spend time with your closest pals to recharge your batteries and renew your spirit. Pre-trek preconceptions are unwarranted since the first contact with the other trekkers is certain to be a source of inspiration and energy. Conditions during the walk will contribute to the increase in mental readiness. The mental repercussions of physical disadvantages will not be ignored. So, when you hike, pay attention to different regions of your body and purposefully relax them. If you want to enjoy your hike, you should learn to loosen up a little, particularly in the hips. Think about your descent as a simple dance, and enjoy the natural rhythms that the path and your body can discover together gradually, whether you're on a flowing downhill route or a frightening slope. Try out a few new walking techniques to add some fun to your commute without worrying about getting somewhere in particular. Maintaining mental fitness mostly requires a willingness to relax and take in the journey, rather than subjecting oneself to undue stress.

⦿ Technically-

Get the right size hiking boots and go for it, from a technical standpoint. You should make use of 60 litres. To become acclimated to carrying heavy items, it is recommended to utilise a backpack on a regular basis. Get a hiking stick, a water bottle, some thermal socks, a fleece or feather coat, some long pants, a poncho, some flip-flops, and any devices you may need like a camera or a power bank (DSLR or digital camera).

➽ Things to Carry

CAPTURED BY OUR TEAM

Testimonials, ➽ provided by the customers.

Everything about our visit to Prashar lake was better than we could have imagined. From our initial contact with Himalayan Adventure Trips, we felt their genuine interest in learning about our group's goals and expectations, and our travels with them reinforced at every turn that they not only understood our requirements but also have the acute skill and expertise to achieve them. Having already had such a wonderful experience with this firm, I will be promoting a trek to Prashar lake to all my friends who share my passion for hiking and will specifically recommend that they work with this outfit. Absolutely fantastic; I have nothing but praise for it.

I went on the Prashar Lake Trek with Himalayan Adventure Trips with some friends; it was our first trek, and we had a great time because of the beautiful scenery and convenient location. We owe a debt of gratitude to Manu, who organised the trip.

Visiting Prashar lake was a fantastic experience.

We went on a weekend hike in January, perfect for seeing snowy peaks and getting the feel of winter hiking. The hike up to Parashar lake was well worth it in my opinion since it provided a glimpse of both lush vegetation and a snowy landscape. You get a sneak peek of your destination along the way, but it's much more stunning in person. We slept under the stars (and the full moon) in tents we set up ourselves and ate and drank with the aid of friendly locals. The next morning, we went outside to enjoy the snow, made snowmen, and slid down snow hills before returning home. It wasn't a long journey, but it was a pleasant one. It's not a difficult hike, but anybody going on their first trip should start training at least three weeks in advance by going for a 30-minute walk or jog every day. Finally, remember to take it easy and have fun with it. Bring back some exciting stories to tell!!

Prashar Lake Trek

Prashar Lake is located 60 km north of Mandi and lies next to a three-storeyed pagoda-like temple. Situated at an altitude of about 2730 m, Prashar Lake is surrounded by the mesmerizing Dhauladhar ranges. In fact, you get a 180-degree view of the Dhauladhar, Kinnaur , and Pir Pinjal mountain ranges from here.

The pagoda-like temple next to the lake uses the traditional Himachali architecture and is dedicated to sage Prashar. According to the locals, the temple was built in the 13th century by a baby using a single tree. It is also said that this is the place where sage Prashar used to meditate which is why this lake is considered quite sacred by the locals. But these are just a few of the many stories about this place which makes this lake so mysterious to the travelers.

Prashar Temple

here is also a small floating island located in the lake which moves around the lake. Made up of plant matter in different decomposition stages, the island floats due to the oxygen released by the plants’ roots. One of the most interesting things about this place is that no one knows the exact depth of this lake.

Why Should You Go to Prashar Lake?

One of the easier treks, Prashar Lake trek is the best way to enter the world of mountains. And since there is a motorable road connecting Baggi Village to Prashar, you can also take the easy way out. But honestly, the trek is quite simple and can be attempted with children as well.

Now, you might ask why you should go to Prashar Lake out of all the places in Himachal . Well, there are a couple of reasons why a trip to this place is a must.

Firstly, it is a beautiful spot where you are surrounded by gorgeous mountain ranges. On the entire trek, you will be presented with some incredible views which will make this 3-4 hour trek completely worth it. And since not many people still come to this spot, you can enjoy some peace and quiet as well.

Top of Prashar Hill

Another reason why you should visit this place is that the night sky is completely magical here. On a clear night, you can see the stars and the moon shine brightly in the sky. So, if you are interested in astrophotography or just admiring the night sky, then this is definitely a good place to visit.

Also, you can enjoy the most amazing sunsets and sunrises from the hilltop here. You can watch the sun go down behind the hill, giving off a warm golden glow to the lake and the temple. And if you are an early bird then you can even catch a mesmerizing sunrise from the hilltop here.

In the morning, the first rays of the sun peek out from behind the clouds and wash away the whole place in a magical golden hue.

The Prashar Lake trek is in itself an amazing experience. It is not overly exerting or hard like other treks. However, it is a little challenging as you need to climb up the steep hill for 3-4 hours to reach the lake. And the meadow on the way is a must-stop place to witness the beauty of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Finally, visit this place to hear the stories about the mysterious lake from the locals. Also, if you notice, the small island in the lake changes positions. In fact, we ourselves witnessed it making a full round on our 2-day stay here.

Prashar Lake Trek Start

Also, if you are trekking during the monsoon period then you will encounter a lot of leeches on the trail. Make sure your arms and legs are covered at all times. And do check periodically for any leeches on your clothes and shoes.

Prashar Lake trek is quite simple and easy. But as mentioned before, it is mostly an uphill route. So, you might tire easily when ascending on the hill. Also, it would be advisable to take a local guide with you who knows the route else you might get a little lost in the forest.

From Bagi village, you need to walk for at least 1-2 Kms on rocky terrain. After that, you will come across the forest trail which goes on for another 3-4 km. Remember that once you are in the forest region, stick to the right side uphill path. Do not go straight on the trail as you can get lost. Best time for Prashar Lake Trek

Although Prashar Lake trek can be completed throughout the year, each season offers something unique to the trekkers. Below, we have mentioned what you can expect in each season here.

Summer Season (March – June)

If you are trying to escape the heat then summertime is a good time to embark on the Prashar Lake trek. The air is cool at this time and you will enjoy camping near the lake. But make sure you carry sufficient water for the trek as you can get easily dehydrated on the way.

Monsoon Season (July – September)

You can opt to do the Prashar Lake all round the year but it is especially beautiful just after the monsoons and during the snowfall.  If you are looking to spend some time during the lush greenery, then we would suggest you go just immediately after monsoons.

Do remember that the Prashar Lake trek trail will be muddy and slippery during this time. And there will be a lot of leeches on the way. So, dress appropriately and wear proper trekking shoes.

Prashar Lake in monsoon

Winter Season

Although the roads are closed from December to February due to snowfall, it is still possible for you to undertake the Prashar Lake trek. However, you would need snow trekking equipment in order to attempt it.

And it would be wise to choose a trekking company or a local guide for the trek to Prashar Lake as the entire route is covered with snow. So, accidents are likely to occur if you aren’t careful.

ATMs in Prashar

You will find no ATM available on the Prashar Lake trek from Bagi Village. So, make sure you withdraw sufficient cash before leaving. There are a couple of ATMs in Suran and Kataula but these are likely to have no cash in them. So, if you need to withdraw cash, do it in Mandi itself.

Network Availability in Prashar

You won’t find a strong mobile network connection on the Prashar lake trek at any point. There won’t be any signal on the trail itself but once you reach the lake, you might get a little signal on JIO or BSNL sims.

However, the signal is quite intermittent so finish your important calls in Mandi.

Where to Stay near Prashar Lake

In terms of accommodation, you won’t find a lack of options here. So, once you complete the Prashar Lake trek, you have there are three options to choose from, depending on your budget.

Camping Sites

In the past few years, a lot of camping sites have opened up around here so you can simply book a stay with them. These camp properties can charge you anywhere between 500 – 1200 INR for a day, depending on whether you choose to eat your meals there or not.

A few camping properties worth noting are Prashar Camps Flysports , Parashar Adventure Camps , and Prashar Lake Krishna Camp . One thing to note is that you will not find private washrooms here except in Krishna Camp. So, you will have to use the public washroom (which is dirty) or choose another stay option.

Bring Your Own Camp

One of the most popular options for a stay near Prashar Lake is to stay in tents. If you are on a budget trip then get your own tent or you can hire a tent for the night here. The camping tent will cost you around 300 – 500 INR per person here.

It gets really cold at night in Prashar. So, if you are getting your own tent, don’t forget to get a warm sleeping bag and sleeping mattress as well. If you don’t then you will end up shivering in cold the entire night.

Camping beside Prashar Lake

There is also a toilet and a bathroom here. So, if you wish then you can take a bath here too. However, they are closed during the evenings so you will need to relieve yourself somewhere inconspicuously.

Also, the toilets and the bathrooms are quite bad near the lake so, I would advise you to avoid them if you can.

Forest Reserve Guesthouse and PWD Rest House

Another option is to take a room in the Forest Rest House or Trekker’s hut here. There are two guesthouses here, located around a km from the lake. There are limited rooms here so make sure you book in advance. You will see them on your Prashar Lake trek before you reach the lake itself.

You can call DFO Mandi at 01905-23536 or RFO Mandi at 01905-269485 to book a room for yourself. A room here is likely to cost you around 500-700 INR.

Dormitory at the Temple Complex

You can also stay in the dormitory in the Prashar temple. We aren’t sure of the cost but it shouldn’t cost you more than 300-400 INR for a night. But do remember that the facilities are quite basic here.

If you opt to stay in Mandi and just attempt Prashar Lake trek as a day trek, then you can check out stay options in this Search Finder.

Hotels and Homestays Near Prashar Lake

There are a few hotels and homestays also that have cropped up near Prashar Lake in the past couple of years. So, you can contact them in advance to book a room there. These hotels are around 7 – 10 km away from the lake and can easily be reached via trek or a car.

Where and What to Eat

You won’t find any food stalls or options available on the Prashar Lake trek trail. So, make sure you carry enough water and snacks with you for the trek. The last major village to stock up will be Bagi village and the prices are slightly on the higher side here.

At Prashar, you would find a couple of dhabas but they have limited food options. You would get Rajma Chawla and a few other dishes here, so don’t expect too much. Rajma Chawla is actually pretty great over here so, do try it out. A simple meal here will cost you around 70 – 100 INR and will be quite filling.

You can also take your own Maggi or Wai Wai and ask them to prepare it for you. They would take some service charge (around 10-20 INR) for it but they would do it for you.

Legends and Stories about Prashar Lake

Apart from the picturesque landscape and the exciting Prashar Lake trek, this place is also known for its interesting legends. There are several captivating stories associated with this lake which makes it an enticing mystery spot to visit. Here are a few of the top stories about this place.

Prashar Lake Temple

Legend Number 1

It is said that this was the place where Prashar rishi used to meditate in the earlier times. And Prashar lake was the barrier against the demons who tried to enter the world. Sage Prashar had a faithful devotee who volunteered to go into the lake and kill the demons to protect the world once and for all.

According to the locals, the lake water started overflowing and threatened to drown this place. In order to stop this, sage Prashar’s devotee went into the lake and didn’t come out for another 4-5 days. No one knew if he was dead or alive. Finally, on the fifth day, he came out of the lake and water receded back to its original level.

From then on, he stayed with Prashar rishi here and made the Pagoda-like temple in his honor.

Legend Number 2

Another popular legend about this place is the formation of the lake. It is said that Bheema, one of the Pandavas, created this lake. According to the story, Pandavas were returning after the Kurukshetra war with Lord Kamrunag.

Lord Kamrunag fell in love with this place so Bheema used his elbow to create a dent which is Prashar Lake. According to the locals, the lake is in the shape of Bheema’s elbow which is why this region is known as Kamru valley. And the lake is also known as the Kamrunag lake.

Story Number 1

All the locals say that no one knows the exact depth of this lake. Many people have tried to find out the depth but all have failed. In fact, once a few people came with all the measuring devices and a long rope but they still couldn’t figure out the depth.

The locals have seen long trees being drowned in this lake with not a glimpse on the surface.

Prashar Lake

Story Number 2

The small island inside the lake moves according to the climate. When it is going to be bad weather, it moves to the left side of the temple. And when it is going to be warm, it moves to the right side. This is what the locals believe but we don’t have any proof for it.

But we did witness the floating island moving and make a full circle of the lake.

These are all the stories told to us by the locals to us. We don’t claim these to be 100% true.

I am planning to solo trek prashar on new year eve. What are all things i should keep in my mind and would that be a good idea? Also if i dont carry my tent or sleeping bag, will i get any place to stay?

Hey Ashish, I don’t think that would be a good idea because usually this time Prashar lake is covered with snow and you won’t find a lot of people trekking on this path. When we visited Prashar lake, we were told by the locals that during snow there is only one family which stays there to look over things so you might get a room but you can’t be too sure about it. Don’t forget to take really warm clothes and something to eat as during snow you might find it hard to find eating places. Let us know how …  Read more »

I am planning solo trip in the 1st week of June over here . If I won’t carry tent with me , Is there any chance of any camping/ tent on rent from Mandi? Thx

Yes, you can. There are tents near the lake as well, however, I will give you one tip. What you can do is, once you reach Mandi, ask the people around of the number of people going to the top. If by chance a lot of people are actually going (which generally does not happen), you can rent out the tents from Mandi itself. Hope that helped 🙂

Yup, thanks a lot ☺️

Can I visit parashar lake trek in the last week of July? Will some showers of rain affect my trip?

Gagan

Will some showers of rain affect my trip?

It depends really. Are you trekking to Prashar? Then make sure you take your raincoat and wear good pair of shoes. If you are not trekking, then it shouldn’t matter. All you need to worry about is taking a rain cover for your tent and a raincoat for yourself.

Istuti Raajvanshi

Hey! Me and my friends are planning to go to this place during 2nd week of October. The only concern we have is of renting the tents. Can we easily get tents on rent in Mandi?

Hey Istuti,

Ideally, you should get tents in Mandi or even at Prashar. However, if you can then it would be better to take a rented tent from your starting place itself.

shatakshi

Well explained post!!! I visited prashar in feb and entire place was in snow. Lake was also frozen and during trek we passed through 3 ft snow..

Thank you Shatakshi. 🙂

The Prashar lake trek is the perfect weekend trip from Delhi to enjoy some peaceful time while also satisfying your inner adrenal junkie.

Situated at an altitude of 2730 meters above sea level, the mystical lake is nestled among snow-covered mountains with the Beas river flowing downside.

One of the most fascinating things about Prashar lake is that a mysterious island keeps floating in the lake all throughout the year. It seemingly looks as if it were rotating in an orbit around the Prashar Temple which is one of the must-visit places in Prashar.

To reach Prashar lake, one has to first cover the distance between Mandi and Parashar, where the village Mandi is the starting point for anyone visiting Prashar lake.  Prashar Trek distance sums up to be around 16 Kilometers to and fro which makes up for a wonderful uphill climbing experience.

The temple has mythical as well as historical significance as it dates back to the 13th century and was named after the sage Prashar. As far as legend goes, it is believed that this three-storied temple was built using a single tree. Interestingly, the stories associated with the temple go as far back in time as the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

One of the reasons that this lake stirs curiosity in the minds of travelers is that the true depth of this lake still remains unknown.

We organize this trek to Prashar in an effort to encourage passionate travelers to explore the hidden gems our country has to offer. Prashar lake is easily one of the best winter treks to do in India and a place that you must visit in Himachal.

In this weekend getaway, we take you to a winter wonderland. Although the cold weather and high altitude can put some strain on you, the view that you get to see is extraordinary and feels rewarding. Triund, Dhauladhar, and Hanuman Tibba are some of the peaks that are visible from the viewpoint.

The Prashar lake is treated as a sacred place by all the locals and once you reach this place, you won’t be able to stop yourself from getting lost in the spiritual essence that is palpable in the air.

There are a ton of places to visit near Prashar lake, which are equally beautiful and can add to your experience. Bijli Mahadev Temple, Lord Ramchandra Temple, and Kulant Pith are a few examples of the same. Also, if you are looking for camping places to stay near Prashar lake then your best bet could be camping near Prashar lake, a forest guest house or one could take shelter in the Parashar temple itself.

The best time to do the Prashar lake trek is from November to  December when the mountains as well as the meadows are covered with a thick blanket of ivory snow. Although it remains accessible around the year, the presence of the snow just makes the entire experience even more breathtaking than it usually is.
