About the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard

If you want to save big on your next flight, then take a look at the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard .  For starters, the welcome offer is worth up to 700¹ in WestJet dollars. The card’s standard earn rate is another way to help you save. Earn 2% back in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights or WestJet Vacations packages using your card⁸. Earn 1.5% back in WestJet dollars for everyday purchases you make on your card⁸. Given that 1 WJ dollar equals $1 CAD, your rewards can go a long way. Redeeming West Jet dollars is also easy, as you don’t need to worry about redemption charts, blackout dates, or seat availability.

Even though the card has an annual fee of $119, you get some pretty good annual benefits. It includes a free first checked bag for the primary cardholder on WestJet flights and up to eight additional guests on the same reservation⁴ (valid for primary cardholders of the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard and up to eight (8) additional guests travelling on the same reservation. Additional terms and conditions apply). You also get an annual companion voucher³, which can save you a fair amount if you’re travelling with another person.

As for the potential rewards you can earn, let’s say you spend $2,000 on flights with WestJet and a total of $18,000 on all other purchases every year. This would earn you 310 in WestJet dollars. When you add in the welcome bonus worth up to 700¹ in WestJet dollars, you’ll get 1,010 WestJet dollars in the first year.

And there’s more: Remember those free checked bags? The cost of a checked bag starts at $30 each way. Let’s say you’re taking four flights a year. That’s eight segments total. In other words, with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard, you’d save $240 on checked bag fees. When you add everything up, you’re getting  a total of over $1,000 in value in the first year.

My Experience with RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard Insurance

To earn as many WestJet Dollars as possible, I use my WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to pay for nearly everything I buy. So when the 55" Samsung Frame TV I bought with this card needed its panel replaced after only 18 months of ownership (and just 6 months outside the protection of the manufacturer's warranty), I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I had an extended warranty for up to two years with the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. To use this feature, I paid for the repair myself, filed the claim online with the card's insurance carrier and I was reimbursed with a cheque for the full amount within weeks. Now I run every major purchase I can through this card—not only to earn the 1.5% back in WestJet dollars—but also to gain the protection of an extended warranty, without paying extra for one.

How the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard compares

While there’s no doubt that the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is a great credit card, you should consider the competition before you sign up. The most logical comparison would be the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card. Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada, so you can quickly compare the earn rate and benefits.

TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card

Best Offer yet for the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card: Earn up to $1,200 in value† including up to 50,000 Aeroplan points†. Conditions Apply. Account must be approved by June 3, 2024.

The TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card has a slightly higher annual fee of $139. Earn 1.5 points† for every $1 spent on eligible gas, grocery and direct through Air Canada ® purchases (including Air Canada Vacations ® ) made with your card. Earn 1 Aeroplan point † for every $1 spent on all other purchases made with your card. Redeeming points is arguably easier with Air Canada since they have more flights and airline partners. However, Aeroplan also uses dynamic pricing, which means during peak seasons, the cost for a free flight could cost you more points.

With both cards, you get free checked bags † . While the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard gives you an annual round-trip companion voucher, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card has the advantage in the travel insurance department since it includes trip cancellation† and delayed/lost baggage insurance † .

While the earn rate and benefits are important, you could argue your travel preferences are more important. If you like to fly WestJet, get the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard. If flexibility is more important, then the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card might be the better pick. But there are plenty of other  travel rewards credit cards  to consider too.

† Terms and conditions apply.

The offer for the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card is not available for residents of Quebec. For Quebec residents, please  click here.

The bottom line: WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard review

The  WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard  is an excellent card for frequent WestJet flyers. The welcome bonus is impressive, and you only need to make a single purchase to get it. The earn rate and additional benefits, including free checked bags⁴, will also be useful.

There’s no denying the card’s benefits, but you’re still restricted to WestJet or Delta code-share flights with your redemptions. This may not be an issue for some people, but those who prefer flexibility may want to see what  other travel cards  are out there. And if you're looking for a similar card from RBC and WestJet with less features and a lower annual fee, consider the WestJet RBC Mastercard instead.

Travel Advisories and Weather Alerts

Before you pack your bags, make sure it's safe to visit your destination.

Travel Advisories

http://travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories

http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv/index-eng.php

Weather Alerts

http://weather.gc.ca/warnings/

It’s important to confirm your travel arrangements and monitor weather conditions before departing on your trip. Airlines frequently allow changes to travel plans without a change fee. We suggest contacting your airline before heading to the airport to learn about potential delays and rescheduling options.

We offer coverage that helps protect you against carrier delays, missed connections and problems getting to the airport on time.  However, you must purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance (in a travel insurance package or stand-alone) prior to the time that a severe storm warning or watch is issued. Once a severe weather warning or watch has been forecasted, trip cancellation and interruption losses resulting from the storm are excluded from your coverage.

Claims and Emergencies FAQs

Have a question about making a claim or getting help during a travel emergency? Get the answers you need here.

If you have trip cancellation and interruption insurance and the emergency is covered, it will help pay for your expenses to return home. There are a number of circumstances that qualify as an emergency (for example, the death or serious illness of a family member). These circumstances, as well as terms and conditions, are described in the certificate of insurance.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance also reimburses you for any cancellation penalties that a travel provider might charge (if you cancel a non-refundable airline ticket, for example).

Remember, in order to be reimbursed, you must call Allianz Global Assistance. You can call Allianz Global Assistance toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-387-2487 from the U.S. and Canada or (905) 816-2561 collect from anywhere in the world.

Yes, as soon as medically possible. There are several reasons to call the emergency contact number first:

  • The multilingual representatives of Allianz Global Assistance are experienced experts in coordinating emergency care for travellers in foreign lands.
  • They're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • If you don't call Allianz Global Assistance first, your benefits may be reduced and your coverage may be limited . As stated in your certificate of insurance, if you do not contact Allianz Global Assistance at the time of your medical emergency or you choose to receive treatment from a medical service provider outside the Allianz Global Assistance network, you will be responsible for 30% of your medical expenses covered under your insurance and in excess of your medical expenses paid by your government health plan. You can call Allianz Global Assistance toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-387-2487 from the U.S. and Canada or (905) 816-2561 collect from anywhere in the world.

Of course, obtaining urgent care in an emergency is your #1 priority—and our representatives are here to help at our toll-free emergency contact number. However, if your medical condition prevents you from calling before seeking emergency treatment, then you must call as soon as medically possible.

Someone else (a family member, friend, hospital or physician's office staff, etc.) may call on your behalf–so it's a very good idea to carry your RBC Insurance travel insurance wallet card with you at all times.

We want to do all we can to help you if you have an emergency—starting with reducing your stress level. If you need assistance call Allianz Global Assistance Toll-Free.

It's our goal to settle every claim as quickly as possible. While every claim is different, there are things you can do to speed things up:

  • If you require emergency care on your trip , call our emergency contact number immediately, or at the earliest possible opportunity (someone else can call if you're unable to). If you do not, your coverage may be limited and your benefits could be reduced.
  • If you need to cancel your trip prior to departing , call your travel agency, airline, tour company or the carrier immediately to cancel your trip no later than one business day after the cause of cancelation. Call Allianz Global Assistance the same day.
  • For all claims , carefully read the instructions for submitting your claim. Make sure you fully complete any required claims forms and submit all required documentation at your earliest possible convenience. For example, you may need to provide Allianz Global Assistance with information on your past health history if you are submitting an emergency medical claim or a trip cancellation claim due to a medical condition.

The multilingual representatives of Allianz Global Assistance are ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week when you have a medical emergency. You can rely on them to refer you or (when medically appropriate) transfer you to one of the accredited medical service providers within the Allianz Global Assistance network, so you can receive the care you need as quickly as possible.

Because the representatives are multilingual and have 24-hour access to real-time translation services, they can provide the help you need in your own language—and also have someone to communicate on your behalf with medical personnel who may speak a different language.

Whenever possible, Allianz Global Assistance will also request for the medical service provider within the network to bill the covered medical expenses directly to them instead of you—reducing stress and hassle.

We will pay your eligible medical bills directly to the medical provider or hospital for you whenever possible.

No matter where in the world you are, we’ll be here for you. If you have an emergency, you can call Allianz Global Assistance toll-free 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 1-800-387-2487 from the U.S. and Canada or (905) 816-2561 collect from anywhere in the world.

The documentation you need to provide will depend on the type of claim, the type of plan you purchased and the province/territory in which you live.

30,000 Aeroplan points are worth $600 , according to Milesopedia’s estimate of the value of points .

While 600 WestJet dollars are worth $600 with the ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard . However, with the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card, you have 6 months to reach the minimum spend versus 3 months on the ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard side.

But the WestJet credit card has an added bonus: the travel companion voucher ! This allows you to buy a flight and get the second one for as little as $119. Depending on your destination, you could save an additional $500 on average.

The ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card/" rel="noindex">TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card requires a minimum personal income of $60,000 or $100,000 annual household income.

The ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard has an annual fee of $119.

The annual fee for the ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card/" rel="noindex">TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card is higher than for the ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">Westjet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard .

The ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard and ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card/" rel="noindex">TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card each offer different levels of points accumulation.

With the ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card/" rel="noindex">TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card, the maximum points earned are 1.5 Aeroplan points per dollar for purchases:

  • Grocery purchases
  • Gas purchases
  • With Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations

1 Aeroplan point per dollar on all other purchases.

With the ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard , you earn WestJet dollars on the following purchases:

  • 1.5% cash back in Westjet dollars on all regular purchases
  • 2% cash back in WestJet dollars on flights with WestJet or WestJet Vacations

WestJet dollars and Aeroplan points are two different kinds of points, each with a different value:

  • 1 WestJet dollar = $1
  • 1 Aeroplan point = $0.02

So, you have to do a bit of math to figure out which earns the most value between the two. Take the following examples:

According to Milesopedia, Aeroplan points are more valuable than WestJet dollars.

Redeeming points

As these two credit cards are part of different loyalty programs, the ways in which points are used are also different!

Each month, Aeroplan points earned on ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-aeroplan-visa-infinite-card/" rel="noindex">TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Card purchases are automatically transferred to the cardholder’s Aeroplan account.

Then, to use your Aeroplan points, book your flight on the Air Canada or Air Canada Vacations website. These Aeroplan points can be used to get a less expensive vacation package or a flight from some fifty partners, members of the Star Alliance network, such as:

  • United Airlines , Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific ;
  • Egyptair, Emirates , Etihad , Lufthansa , Singapore Airlines ;
  • Swiss , TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines , etc.

WestJet dollars earned with the ® World Elite Mastercard" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/westjet-world-elite-mastercard-rbc/" rel="noindex">WestJet RBC ® World Elite Mastercard are credited to the WestJet Rewards membership account.

The WestJet member can then redeem these WestJet dollars to deduct all or part of the cost:

  • A vacation package with WestJet Vacations ;

WestJet RBC® Mastercard

rbc westjet visa travel insurance

Best offer is available publicly

Signup bonus:, annual fee:, annual interest rates:, earning rate:, perks & benefits:.

The WestJet RBC ®  Mastercard is a scaled-down version of the WestJet RBC ®  World Elite Mastercard .

We’d recommend the World Elite card to those who qualify for it, as it has a stronger welcome bonus, companion pass, and card benefits. However, the basic WestJet RBC ®  Mastercard could be a good fit for those that don’t qualify for the World Elite card but like to travel with WestJet.

Bonuses & Fees

Currently, the signup offer on the WestJet RBC ®  Mastercard is 100 WestJet Dollars.† All 100 WestJet Dollars are awarded after spending $1,000 in the first three months after applying.†

The annual fee is $39, with supplementary cardholders costing $19 each.†

Earning Rewards

With the WestJet RBC ® Mastercard, you’ll earn:

  • 1.5 % back in WestJet dollars per dollar spent on eligible WestJet flights and vacations†
  • 1% back in WestJet dollars per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases†

Redeeming Rewards

What exactly are WestJet dollars? Well, 100 WestJet dollars can be applied as a $100 credit to the base fare of any WestJet booking. Therefore, as long as you fly with WestJet once a year to the tune of at least $100, the signup bonus is as good as cash in your pocket.

WestJet Rewards allows you to redeem WestJet dollars towards the cost of any WestJet flight, so there’s no need to worry about “award availability” or anything like that.

As long as there’s a seat available for purchase, you can use your WestJet dollars towards it.

The 100 WestJet dollars bonus doesn’t have to be used up all in one go either. You’re free to earn the bonus, wait for one of WestJet’s great deals to pop up on a route you’re interested in, and then apply the bonus towards your booking.

However, it’s important to point out that since the value of WestJet dollars is fixed, you wouldn’t be able to find out-sized value redemptions opportunities as you could with other programs. Moreover, WestJet dollars can only be applied to offset against the base fare – excluding items such as taxes, fees, and other air transportation charges.

Perks & Benefits

The major selling point of the WestJet RBC Mastercard is an annual round-trip companion voucher for travel on WestJet.† This companion voucher can be redeemed as a $199 base fare for travel within Canada or the contiguous U.S.†

Since it’s a companion voucher, you have to be booking an itinerary for at least two people – the first passenger would pay full price, while the second passenger would enjoy the companion voucher’s promotional price.

The vouchers are valid for round-trip tickets in economy or premium class (not business class). You’ll also have to pay taxes and fees on the companion ticket, in addition to the discounted base fare.

If you’ll be taking advantage of the $199 companion voucher, the $39 annual fee is a relatively small price to pay.

Other benefits include the ability to save 3¢/L on fuel at Petro-Canada whilst earning 20% more PetroPoints,† and receiving three months of complimentary DoorDash DashPass.†

Insurance Coverage

As an entry-level travel card, this card comes with basic travel insurance, including:

Auto rental damage and theft insurance for MSRPs of up to $65,000, which can help you save on the insurance fees that rental companies like to impose†

Hotel burglary insurance of up to $2,500 in total†

Travel accident insurance of up to $500,000 against accidental death or dismemberment†

You’ll also enjoy an extended warranty that doubles the original manufacturer’s warranty for up to one year,† and coverage against accidental loss or damage of personal property for up to 90 days from the date of purchase.†

Legal Disclaimers

† Terms and conditions apply. Refer to the RBC ® website for the most up-to-date information.

As a lower end travel credit card, the WestJet RBC® Mastercard has no minimum income requirement. Follow the below link to the RBC® website to learn more about this card and submit an application.
