David Ryan Adams is an American alternative country singer-songwriter, musician and producer from Jacksonville in North Carolina who has been a member of Whiskeytown and The Cardinals.

As a young child, Ryan was known to be obsessed with poetry and cult fiction, enjoying the works of Edgar Allan Poe, Hubert Selby and Henry Miller. When his parents brought him an electric guitar for his fourteenth birthday he played it constantly and ended up joining a local band called Blank Label. Adams dropped out of school at an early age and went to live with bandmate Jere McIlwean, he was intent on pursuing his music career and played with two live bands at the time, Ass and The Lazy Stars and The Patty Duke Syndrome. After the split of the latter, Adams went on to form Whiskeytown with Caitlin Cary, Eric "Skillet" Gilmore, Steve Grothmann and Phil Wandscher. This is the time in which he developed his alt country style, the band released three albums together and achieved moderate success.

In 2000, Ryan Adams pursued a solo career with the release of his debut LP 'Heartbreaker' which was produced by Ethan Jones and gained the singer a nomination for the Shortlist Music Prize. His second album 'Gold' was received positively by fans and critics, yet Adams was adamant he did not want to promote the album through conventional methods such as radio interviews and meet & greets and instead opted for live dates and further recordings. For the follow-up to this Ryan was frozen out by his record label who hand picked tracks from four demo albums that were never released to create 'Demolition' and although this was a critical success, it did not sell as well as its predecessor 'Gold'.

In 2005, Adams joined rock band The Cardinals to release a couple of albums with them in the same year, both of which made the top thirty on the US Billboard charts. He also released a solo album titled '29' which was a momentous failure, charting at #144. His next release though 'Easy Tiger' managed to break the top ten due to his new found exposure with The Cardinals, during the heights of his fame Adams was scheduled to play Stonehenge when the Stonehenge society had to cancel the gigs to an overwhelming response to email or call-in for free tickets. They were highly concerned that the highway would have to be shut down during the performance due to the demand for tickets. Adams continued to steadily release solo material, with his 2014 self titled release achieving his highest charting places on both the US billboard charts and the UK charts.

Live reviews

"Mike, look at that! There are a bunch of people right there, look! They are right there!!!”

Ryan Adams was speaking to Mike Viola, the guitarist for his latest band, The Shining. The thing which had just happened (and was still happening) was the last performance of their short summer tour. The ‘bunch of people’ were made up of fans from across the country. The place was the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. And while the exclamatory nature of his remark would have seemed a little unnecessary coming from anyone else who had already performed the fabled venue a few times prior, it was almost expected from Ryan Adams. The prolific singer-songwriter from North Carolina is notorious for finding the spectacular in the most mundane aspects of life. That’s not to say playing at Red Rocks is anything less than phenomenal, but I have personally witnessed the man show the same enthusiasm when speaking about his cat, or how he came to the decision to name his debut album after a Mariah Carey poster that hung in his room.

The last time I saw Ryan Adams headline a show was in 2008. My wife and I had just started dating and I took her to see him perform the Zellerbach Hall at UC Berkeley. Adams had recently been diagnosed with Ménière’s disease and had quit using hard drugs and alcohol. I remember the banter more than the music that night. Sobriety didn’t exactly equate to a newfound focus on stage. His stories were bizarre, hilarious, and sometimes completely incomprehensible. It was a sit-down show, and although the Cardinals were with him, it felt very much like a solo, mostly-acoustic set. Easy Tiger had been my favorite release in quite some time, but the disjointed performance (as entertaining as it was) left me questioning the overall health and well-being of the man behind the music. My concern was only heightened when I learned III/IV and the metal-experiment, Orion, were also the result of that period in his life.

Ryan Adams is many things to many people. There are those who will always pine for the Whiskeytown days. There are old-school fans who will continue to see every album through the impossible lens of Heartbreaker. Some people will always like the alt-country troubadour, while others prefer the unhinged punk and metal enthusiast. And in this time and age when the 80’s are remembered more fondly than they might deserve to be, some will applaud his unapologetic adoption of the soft rock popularized during that era. Critics lift him up, only to throw him down. Women pretend his lyrics were written just for them…that is, until he writes something they don’t like. Guys who can’t be pigeonholed into a defining label will relate to his no-fucks-to-give style. You can say what you want about Ryan Adams, but you can never accuse him of pandering to the masses. He is many things to many people, but he knows himself. He is confident in himself. Only a man with confidence and self-awareness could walk onto a stage, in front of thousands of people, and sing a song like “Trouble” while wearing a red flannel over a black Samhain t-shirt.

Thursday 19th February. Brighton Dome. Ryan Adams. Its night one of a Brighton double bill at the Dome. The four Musketeers of Antony, Graham, John and I are down on the south coast for two days of music and beer.

Ryan Adams is one of my favourite artists, always consistently good (although sometimes needs a little editing) on both record and live. What has made Ryan stand out in the past are his maverick tendencies and edginess to his performances. Whether with a full band or acoustic you are never entirely sure what you are going to get but in the main he has delivered. So Ryan Adams of 2015 is clean sober and recently separated from his wife and we wait with anticipation for what we are about to receive.

The stage is festooned with all sorts of crap from stars and stripes flags to stuffed tigers. It’s a five piece tonight with an added organ to the usual mix of guitars, drum and bass. What follows is an immaculately performed set by a tight band of some great songs. But, it’s all a little one paced set to a medium tempo with little light and shade and no real standout moments. The songs kinda blend into one with the occasional guitar solo thrown in although even these feel restrained.

The set covers most of his career with a good chunk from his two classic albums Heartbreaker and Gold with ‘Come Pick Me Up’ and ‘When the Stars Go Blue’ raising the bar above what has been set for the rest of evening. There’s minimal banter with the crowd although a heckler is given short shrift and there’s an amusing improvised song about Indiana Jones but there’s no real energy either on or off the stage.

It’s a difficult gig to summarise with the songs all skilfully delivered by a great set of musicians but it felt a little soulless. It’s ultimately disappointing and this one won’t live long in the memory so let’s start a campaign to get Ryan back on the booze and getting laid to get his mojo back.

I wish I had a work ethic that was even half as ferocious as Ryan Adams. Since leaving Whiskeytown in 2000 and making his solo debut with the classic Heartbreaker, he’s produced no fewer than fourteen solo records, both on his own and with The Cardinals, and another, self-titled effort is lined up for later this year. Accordingly, his live shows have varied dramatically over the years; some completely solo and acoustic, others with The Cardinals backing him, all of them delivered with the conviction of an artist who isn’t just happy to experiment stylistically; it genuinely appears as if he needs to do so, to continue as a musician. His most recent UK show, at the Royal Albert Hall last year in support of Ashes & Fire, saw him opt for a set that spanned much of his most personal work; as well as a slew of cuts from his latest album, he dropped a number of Heartbreaker tracks, too, including ‘My Winding Wheel’ and a solo version of the gorgeous ‘Oh My Sweet Carolina’. We can probably expect future UK shows to follow a similar tack, flitting between full band and acoustic efforts; with any luck, he might include the devastating solo piano version of ‘New York, New York’ that he played on Letterman last year, too.

I should start by saying I've been a fan since way before the first time I saw him 10 years ago. He's influenced my music tastes and some big life choices for a log time. I've seen him at the Ryman 2x before this and each show was special in itself.

However, it was so good to see him back at The Mother Church playing so many of my favorite songs. It surprises me to this day how great his voice still sounds live. Coupled with his great songwriting, he performed a range that included true rock songs and broken-hearted ballads. It reminded there hasn't been an incarnation of Ryan Adams that hasn't been worth the price of a ticket. His catalogue is deep and his onstage banter has improved by leaps and bounds, if that's important to you. He even went as far as to acknowledge difficulties he's had with Nashville audiences. But, I believe every ticket purchased was an unspoken agreement to not be an asshole. Either of us.

He poked fun at himself by crushing a cover or Bryan Adams Summer of '69 and brought out fellow Americana Royalty, Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires.

What can I say; He's The King of Cool and one of the most rock 'n roll performers I know. He can come back anytime.

I've seen Ryan Adams play Brisbane either with the cardinals or solo. The Tivoli in my opinion has always been my favourite place to see him.

The music varied from the cardinal days (sweet illusions) to the more recent songs of Do you still love me...

He was more talkative this time round which was a real treat. Loved the improv Brisbane Gothic Girl and his story during my winding wheel.

I think my favourite songs that night were When the Stars go Blue and of course Wonderwall.

He played til midnight and whilst it was a work night, it was worth the tired eyes and sore head....

It was great to come from a gig just welling with conversation, smiles and a few vinos....

Never seen him live before. What a witty guy! As well as loving the music, his comical asides had me in stitches. One of the security guys was shining his torch into the crowd, flashing it on and off at people who were filming with their phones. Ryan said that the flashlight was more distracting than the filming, then he felt bad that he yelled at the guy and made up a 4 minute song about "Stage Security Right" on the spot apologising. Stage Security Right was not won round... "I think I pissed him off further," Ryan said. I think he's right. But his motives came from a good place.

Firstly I will say I love Ryan Adams, but I was very disappointed in this show. The opening statement given before he came on made him look like a prima dona that would excuse him from failing. No flashing lights from cameras/phones....then the first song was accompanied by ....flashing stage lights!!!

As to the performance, I expected some subtlety, as he demonstrates in many of his beautiful lyrical songs... but was greeted with and onslaught of driving rock, a wall of sound with Adams sreaming like a Bruce Springsteen sound alike.....walked out before the end.

Ryan is good as usual

He did a very powerful concert, with strong electrical sound.

To be honest I prefer more acoustic tune but it's only a personal opinion and the concert was good anyway.

Corn Exchange has a high acoustics level sound but seats disposition is terrible and I really struggled to see the stage and not the back head of the person in front of me. Worse of that, temperature in the back and top places became very high (hot air go up) and many attendees went away before concert finished.

So, Ryan 4 stars out 5, Corn Exchange 2 stars out 5.

Ryan Adams was great. He sounds fantastic live. It was unfortunate that there was a guy in the front row that was pretty much heckling the artist all night and no one thought to maybe remove him from the show. Also, the air conditioning was not working at The Lincoln Theater which made for a pretty miserable temperature inside the theater on a hot summer night. I thought about leaving but wanted to hear all the songs. I would suggest working AC for future concerts on 90 plus degree days.

Ryan Adams new band the shining are a tight sounding outfit and add to his latest style of sound on his newer and older songs. Still prefer the cardinals but adams don't. Plenty of added riffs and electricity to all the songs. His last couple of albums show a sign of decline and will probably never match up to the past but what bands do. Saying that the concert was pretty good and worth the entrance fee. Would I go again? Not to sure maybe I've seen him too many times already.

RYAN ADAMS ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL 18-SHOW NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN FALL / WINTER 2022

Article contributed by boulder theater | published on wednesday, august 10, 2022.

ryan adams tour opener

On the heels of very successful East Coast shows in the Spring of 2022 and a sold-out Los Angeles show in July, Ryan Adams announces an additional 18-solo tour dates in November and December 2022. These new dates are in addition to the 8-show Midwest October tour that is already on-sale, including sold out shows in Atlanta and Asheville.

The new series of concerts will kick-off on November 4th in Austin at ACL Live at the Moody Theater, and will then see Adams perform in San Antonio, Phoenix, Tucson, Los Angeles, El Cajon, Oakland and San Luis Obispo before a short break. The second block of dates embarks with two shows at Boulder Theater, Colorado at the end of November– followed by visits to Omaha, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Northfield, Toronto, Detroit, Greensburg and ending in North Bethesda.

The concerts will feature Adams, his guitars and piano in an acoustic tour-de-force. During Spring’s East-Coast run he performed a stunning 168 songs over five nights in shows that averaged two hours and forty minutes.

“Word of mouth from the first leg of the tour was so good that promoters came to us,” explained Adams’ Manager, Richard Jones. “Ryan hasn’t toured since 2019 and there seems to be a voracious appetite to see him perform live.” The tour was conceived and orchestrated by Jones and Mike Hayes, Adams’ agent at ICM.

Tickets will be offered to Adams’ fan base first, and what is left will be made available to the general public. Tickets will be available via the following link: https://ryanadams.ffm.to/tour.OPR

In addition to his touring prep, Adams has sensationally released three albums so far this year under his own label PAX-AM Recordings: Chris, a tribute to his late brother, Romeo & Juliet following shortly after and FM – the new rock-and-roll album released on July 22. Music legend Don Was recorded his Carnegie Hall concert in May for release later this year.

Ryan Adams Books More Tour Dates in Post-Scandal Comeback Bid

Following some successful east coast tour dates in May, Adams is moving on to markets like Chicago and Atlanta as he looks to reestablish viability as a live artist three years after allegations of sexual misconduct put his career in limbo.

In a further test of whether he will be able to pick up his career somewhere in the vicinity of where it left off amid misconduct allegations three years ago, Ryan Adams has announced a tour of eight cities in the Midwest and South, following up on a run of five cities in the Northeast he completed in May.

The mini-tour of mid-sized halls begins Oct. 14 with a stop at Atlanta’s 2,600-seat Tabernacle and wraps up in the almost identically sized Stephens Auditorium in Ames, Iowa Oct. 22. Dates in-between include Chicago’s Chicago Theatre, Minneapolis’ State Theatre, Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater. St. Louis’ Factory, Louisville’s Palace and Asheville’s Thomas Wolfe.

While an eight-city tour announcement might be a blip in most artists’ careers, it’s significant for Adams in that he has spent the last three years as pretty much persona non grata in the music industry, by his own admission, following a 2019 New York Times article that alleged sexual misconduct and emotional manipulation in his dealings with women, particularly among female artists he worked with.

These new bookings, along with the five shows he completed in the east and one he has coming up at Los Angeles’ Orpheum July 22, are his bid to prove that a sizable portion of his audience has stuck with him despite the allegations that left his career in limbo for three years.

These newly announced shows go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. PT. Like the other shows Adams has done this year, they will be solo performances, likely with a running time similar to the two hours and 40 minutes that Adams averaged in his east coast gigs.

“The word of mouth from the first leg of the tour was so good that promoters came to us,” Richard Jones, Adams’ manager, said in a statement. “Ryan hasn’t toured since 2019 and there seems to be a voracious appetite to see him perform live.”  Jones is putting the shows together along with Adams’ ICM agent, Mike Hayes.

Although Adams lost his distribution deal with Blue Note Records in the wake of the 2019 allegations, that label’s president, Don Was, has continued to work with him and recorded Adams’ sold-out Carnegie Hall show in May for a live album expected to come out later this year.

In a story earlier this month titled “Can Ryan Adams Be a Rock Star Again? With a New Team and Return to Concerts, Singer Looks to Move Past Sexual Misconduct Allegations,” Variety talked with Jones and crisis PR specialist Howard Bragman about their efforts to put Adams back into the spotlight.

In that story, the singer’s new manager admitted there had been a reluctance by venues and promoters to book Adams, but said the Carnegie show broke the logjam. “I think the truth is, somebody had to do it first, and then people noticed and realized that it was successful, and he was obviously in an extremely good place personally and could deliver such a good, extensive show,” Jones said. “What’s happened, noticeably, since we’ve completed those shows is the amount of promoters across the world that have now contacted us and are offering dates in venues and wanting to book Ryan.”

Adams’ reps put the total gross for the five east coast shows at around $600,000.

Previously, in a Los Angeles magazine profile last year, Adams — who had five top 10 albums in the Billboard 200 between 2007-2017 — had said he was in danger of becoming destitute as a result of being ostracized by the music industry.

With the apparent success of the east coast shows, Adams looked to join a list of entertainers like Louis C.K. that have been able to resume their careers — with practical limitations — after becoming #MeToo emblems, with some former fans lost forever and others saying it’s time to extend forgiveness or contending that the performer was railroaded all along.

Adams’ itinerary can be found here . The new dates:

‍ Ryan Adams & The Cardinals ‍ Listen | Watch

As one of the most influential and beloved Americana artists of the 21st century, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals captivated audiences since their formation in 2004. The band’s influence can be heard in the music of countless artists, from Wilco to The Avett Brothers.

The group earned the admiration of critics and fans alike, and their legacy as one of the most influential Americana bands of the 21st century is more than secure. Led by the enigmatic Ryan Adams, the band has been hailed as one of the most innovative and dynamic acts to emerge from the Americana scene. Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Adams was drawn to music, picking up the guitar at age 12 and teaching himself to play by listening to classic rock and blues albums. His early influences included Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and Neil Young.

At age 16, Adams formed his first band, The Patty Duke Syndrome, which played small clubs and bars in the Jacksonville area. After graduating from high school, Adams moved to Nashville and began to pursue a career in music. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented songwriter, and soon signed a recording contract with Lost Highway Records.

In 2004, Adams formed the infamous Ryan Adams & The Cardinals with lead guitarist Neal Casal, bassist Chris Feinstein, and drummer Brad Pemberton. The band quickly made a name for themselves, releasing their critically acclaimed debut album, Cold Roses, in 2005. The album featured a mix of folk, country, and rock, and was praised for its raw, stripped-down sound. The collective released a steady stream of albums, including Jacksonville City Nights (2005), Easy Tiger (2007), and Cardinology (2008). Each album showcased the band’s unique blend of Americana, folk, and rock, while Adams’ songwriting continued to evolve and mature.

In 2010, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals disbanded, and Adams returned to his solo career. Since then, he has released a steady stream of solo albums, including no less than 5 studio albums in 2022 alone.

But the love of The Cardinals has remained - often praised for their unique blend of Americana, folk, and rock. While the band’s live performances have been remembered by nostalgic fans for their energy and intensity.

March, 2023 - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals announce their long awaited return. Adams has put together an all-star line-up who will hit the road in the US in the Summer of 20223. The line-up: Adams, Brad Pemberton, Chris Stills, Daniel Clarke and Don Was.

Brad Pemberton – a founding member of The Cardinals who had toured with Adams from 2001-2009, recording numerous albums together. Brad has also recorded/performed with Steve Earle & The Dukes, Iodine, Patty Griffin, Elizabeth Cook, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams and numerous others.

Chris Stills - son of Stephen Stills and French singer-songwriter Veronique Sanson, Stills first picked up a guitar on the road with Crosby, Stills And Nash aged 12 and went on to forge his own solo career over two albums, 100 Year Thing (1998) and Chris Stills (2005). He also played with Adams, the Jayhawks and more. As well as turning to acting too, both on stage (a 2009 role as Julius Caesar in the French production Cleopatre - La Derniere Reine d'Egypt ) and screen, appearing in 2010 movie Requiem For A Killer and TV shows such as Shameless .

Daniel Clarke - keyboardist in Adams’ backing band The Shining between 2014 and 2017, Richmond, Virginia native Clarke is a well-respected multi-instrumentalist, playing at the White House and the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony. A collaborator with a wide array of acts including k.d. lang, The War On Drugs, Jenny Lewis and Bob Mould, he has also enjoyed a solo career involving a single, “Diamonds”, released on Adams’ label PAX AM in 2015.

Don Was - the literal Don of ‘80s funk rock legends Was (Not Was), Was has moved on to become a celebrated, Grammy-winning producer for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Elton John and Bob Dylan, among countless others. Now president of Blue Note Records Was has also helped co-produce two of Adams’ recent albums (2020’s Wednesdays and 2021’s Big Colors ).

Ryan Adams Mines Gold At Atlanta Tour Opener

ryan adams tour opener

ATLANTA — For Ryan Adams, opening his solo tour at the Variety Playhouse on Friday meant digging up a few ghosts from the past — and putting a few others to rest.

At the first stop on the 26-year-old singer/songwriter's fall trek in support of his new solo release, Gold, Adams admitted that he was returning to less-than-hallowed ground.

"Thanks for coming out to the first show," the scruffy-haired, denim-jacket-clad Adams told the crowd. "Nice to do it here, since this is the place I f---ed up last time I tried to play with a band."

That last time was back in spring 1998, when Atlanta fans witnessed one of the final meltdowns featuring Adams and his former band, North Carolina alt-country darlings Whiskeytown.

Adams has put time and distance between himself and his Whiskeytown days, issuing a stripped-down, emotionally raw debut, Heartbreaker, last year while splitting time between New York and Nashville. (Whiskeytown's posthumous Pneumonia was issued earlier this year.)

The Gold sessions brought a shift to the sunnier climes of Hollywood, where Adams hobnobbed with the likes of Alanis Morissette and Winona Ryder while recording the sprawling, multifaceted LP with several friends and notable rock progeny, including the Counting Crows' Adam Duritz, Ethan Johns (son of producer Glyn Johns) and Chris Stills (Stephen Stills' son) (see [article id="1442608"]"Ryan Adams Reflects On Pneumonia, Gold "[/article]).

As evidenced by Gold 's generally brisk feel and upbeat outlook, the change of scenery has done Adams a wealth of good. Onstage in Atlanta, even though he didn't look tanned, Adams practically beamed as he comfortably led his touring band, the Lax, through a rootsy and rocking 25-song, two-hour-plus set.

Emphasizing the new, Adams and the Lax — featuring childhood friend Billy Mercer on bass, veteran session hand "Bucky" Baxter on pedal steel, guitarist Brad Rice and drummer Brad Pemberton — opened with an unreleased song, "Candy Doll," before knocking out a half-dozen new nuggets from Gold, highlighted by "Somehow, Someday," "Firecracker" and the Heartbreakers-ish potboiler "Nobody Girl."

After a brief, lighthearted detour through the country standard "Lovesick Blues," Adams was in good enough spirits to deflect an audience request for the James Gang's "Funk #49" with a simple, "I'm sorry, but f--- ya kindly," then launch into the honky-tonk shuffles of "To Be Young (Is to Be Sad, Is to Be High)" and "The Rescue Blues."

Adams and company also downplayed and rode out the typical first-night hiccups, laughing off a false start of another new tune, "La Cienega Just Smiled," and trying to pass it off as intentional.

"Sorry, that was in the wrong key," Adams admitted in between slugs from a bottled beer. "I'm a big enough stoner that I could have been in the wrong key, but I don't think so. We actually worked that out at soundcheck so we could finish our cigarettes. That's gonna work well tomorrow night, I swear."

After hotboxing a bit of the Rolling Stones' "Midnight Rambler" onto the end of "Oh My Sweet Carolina" via a harmonica-led workout, Adams made his sole nod to his Whiskeytown past by covering "Nervous Breakdown," the Black Flag song Adams' former band often played in concert.

But "Breakdown" was the only drop of Whiskeytown to be had at the show, as Adams instead relished the role of leader and focal point of a boisterous rock band cutting loose on his own tunes.

In a somber and poignant — yet uplifting — moment during the show, the crowd openly acknowledged the September 11 tragedy and paid tribute to New Yorkers by roaring in approval of the "I'll always love you though, New York" chorus to Gold 's lead track, "New York, New York."

For the first encore, Adams returned to the stage with an acoustic guitar for several of his Heartbreaker ballads, including stirring versions of "My Winding Wheel," "Don't Ask for the Water" and "Damn, Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains)."

Bringing out the Lax for the last round of songs, Adams and cohorts then freely rambled through "Come Pick Me Up" and several other unreleased tracks before asking the audience for its approval and a little friendly advice.

"I'm sorry, that's as much as we know, and that's as long as we have," Adams said, "but this wasn't too bad for a first gig, right? Now, what's a good place to get really pissed at?"
