Engine and Performance
The 2023 avatar of the Tata Safari retains the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. This motor meets BS6 Phase 2 emissions standards and produces 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The automatic transmission still works very well, with the shifts that remain quick, smooth, and in sync with the engine’s characteristics and power delivery. There is enough torque for pulling from low speeds, and the transmission's responsiveness to both upshifts and downshifts makes the driving experience enjoyable. It also gets paddle shifters, and they respond well, making the driving experience more engaging.
The Eco, City, and Sport driving modes remain unchanged, offering responsive throttle inputs. The Safari has sufficient load-carrying and people-hauling capabilities in both urban and highway settings, and it can overtake effortlessly despite its size and weight. This Tata SUV remains planted and stable at triple-digit speeds, and its performance is not compromised despite being larger and heavier than the Harrier. The terrain mode selector, which efficiently alters the response through software maps, has been retained too. However, some off-road enthusiasts may argue that all-wheel drive (AWD) would have made the SUV more capable in hilly regions and slippery conditions. Nonetheless, our experience suggests that the Safari can tackle trails and rough terrain with poise for the most part.
Ride and Handling
The Safari's high ground clearance, tall stance, and well-tuned suspension allow it to effortlessly absorb bumps, potholes, and ruts on broken roads. Occupants are not unsettled, and there is minimal noise inside the cabin — whether driving at low or high speeds. Its robust build quality and Land Rover underpinnings are evident in its ride and handling.
Previous Safari owners complained about the heavy hydraulic steering, but the new electronic power steering has addressed this issue. It feels lighter at low speeds but adds weight as the speed increases, as is also noticeable in the Sport mode. The ADAS, meanwhile, is not intrusive and gently guides the car back into the marked lane if it starts to veer off. Then, all the disc brakes provide good stopping power and work well with the emergency automatic braking system. Overall, both systems functioned flawlessly, with the adaptive cruise control responding to commands instantly.
Exterior Design
Despite being a facelift, the new model has been significantly redesigned, giving it a concept-like appearance and a more upmarket feel than its predecessor. The new single grille is unique, with accents that match the exterior body colour on this version. The connected LED bar is a welcome addition, and the new squared-off headlamp housings on the re-sculpted bumper further distinguish it from the previous model.
Moreover, the new 19-inch wheels have an attractive design similar to the Sierra concept's wheels showcased at this year's Auto Expo. The rear section has been updated with tweaked taillights and a new LED bar that gets the welcome and goodbye animation in line with the front. There's also a faux skid plate on the redesigned bumper with vertically stacked reflectors and reverse light housing.
Interior and Features
The interior has also been updated, but the overall design remains largely unchanged. The most noticeable change is the new steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which was first seen on the new Nexon. Tata has also addressed our previous criticism of this new steering’s horn placement, which was awkward and difficult to use. The horn has now been repositioned and is more responsive to inputs.
The new Safari also features touch controls for the AC. Other major updates to the dashboard include a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. The latter gets readable fonts, fast response time, and high customisability, and is packed with information, including ADAS. The touchscreen is also highly responsive and has a clean UI, but it lacks haptic feedback and knobs for quick control.
The seating layout remains unchanged, with ample space in all rows. However, a major improvement that elevates its interior's premium feel is the high-quality materials used for the upholstery, dashboard, and most surfaces. Nothing feels cheap or out of place, and the cabin remains robust. The Safari has been known for its 'boss mode', and it continues to offer a laid-back seating position with power adjustments. The seats also get adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort. To further delight passengers, ventilated seats are now available in both rows, which will be a blessing in our hot and humid climate.
The carmaker has also taken the safety aspect up a notch. For example, all variants/personas now come standard with six airbags, while the top-spec version gets an additional driver's knee airbag. In addition, the Safari gets a 360-degree camera and a host of ADAS features, including new ones like adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, high beam assist, lane change alert, and lane departure warning. Other ADAS features include door open alert, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, other important safety features include rear collision warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking, which worked effectively. The SUV also gets disc brakes on all four wheels.
The new Safari is also equipped with a new e-call feature for emergency assistance. With a touch of a button, the breakdown call can notify the roadside assistance service. Other impressive tech features that worked flawlessly include the new TFT cluster, terrain mode selector with TFT screen, audio controls compatible with Alexa, powered tailgate opening, and the connected car experience. Finally, whether you choose the six- or seven-seater version, every variant, from the entry-level Smart to the top-spec Accomplished+, offers a good variety of exterior colour options and material choices.
Tata Motors wants to broaden the appeal of the new Safari with a wider range of exterior colours, including a segment-first dual-tone option, and a plethora of new features. The Safari retains its macho appearance, making it a symbol of authority while offering a premium and spacious cabin. Prospective buyers also get new technology and added connectivity, all while cocooned in safety. Tata Motors also has kept the premium reasonable, making the new Safari an easy choice for buyers, given its many appealing features.

Tata Safari User Reviews & Ratings
The Tata Safari is the flagship model for the Indian car maker that was first introduced in the country in 2021. At that time, the focus was as much on drawing inspiration from an iconic name as was on putting a brand-new model on a pedestal. This eventually resulted in the introduction of a three-row vehicle that promised SUV-like style but claimed MPV-like comfort. Fast forward just two years and the updated Tata Safari has a new wardrobe to show off in 2023.
And then there is the pivotal factor of in-car features - the more, the better, even if you end up not using a significant chunk of these in the long run. The Koreans started the trend and rivals like Tata Motors are only too keen to hit back. The Tata Safari, therefore, was always going to be pampered and peppered with features galore. So how do all of these factors come together to manifest in the flagship product from Tata Motors? Here is the first-drive review of the 2023 Tata Safari facelift:
Also watch: 2023 Tata Safari review: Family SUV with bachelor spirit?
2023 tata safari facelift: exterior.
The updated Safari looks a tad bit more sporty compared to the outgoing model, while still retaining its largely sophisticated exterior design language. The face, for instance, has been reworked and now sports a new grille, a reworked vertical housing for the fog lamps and headlights, and a stretched DRL bar that connects the sequential DRLs on either side. In a nutshell, the comprehensive updates of the front fascia have given the SUV a butch yet premium look, making it significantly distinctive from the previous model which it has replaced.
There is not much change in the side profile of the new Tata Safari SUV, apart from the reworked alloy design on the 19-inch wheels. The design is likely to evoke different reactions from different viewpoints instead of inviting unilateral awe. But what works really well is how Tata Motors' designers have managed to snub the use of chrome elements and still come up with a visually striking profile. Overall, the side profile of the SUV looks slightly curvy and pretty clean. The subtly flared wheel arches give the SUV a bold and muscular look, while the new design alloy wheels enhance the premium sporty feel.
There are no chrome elements on the rear of the Safari either, where a stretched LED bar connects the two tail lights and runs all across the length of the trunk door which, by the way, offers powered powered-open option. Besides that, the tailgate looks pretty sculpted thanks to the glossy black panel running through the centre of the trunk that also houses the sleek LED bar. The integrated roof spoiler and chunky black bumper with a thick metal skid plate are other design elements that come enhancing the SUV's bold visual appearance.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Interior
The new Tata Safari's cabin has become much more premium now and a slew of updates to the feature list as well as to the upholstery lend the vehicle a premium appeal that would have otherwise been restricted to models in segments above the one this car competes in. The top-end Accomplished variant - or persona, as Tata Motors refers to it, comes with a dual-tone colour scheme inside the cabin but the White theme on the seats would be quite hard to maintain in pristine condition.
The layered dashboard now gets an artificial wood panel which is a nice touch while the central section is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display unit that is intuitive, puts out clear feed from the 360-degree cameras and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The map feed can also be redirected to the all-digital driver display screen for better navigation which now sports customisable layouts.
The steering wheel has also been updated and is now a four-spoke set with mounted controls and has an illuminated Tata logo on it. This is certainly another nice touch from Tata Motors enhancing the premium quotient inside the cabin of the new Safari SUV. The updated steering wheel is quite easy to operate and control the advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functionalities that this car offers, courtesy of the layout of the control buttons on the wheel. On that note, the new Tata Safari SUV offers 11 ADAS functions in a further bid to aid driving safety and convenience.
There are plenty of other convenience features that the new Safari packs as well, whether it is the dual-zone climate control function, air purification system, ventilated seats at the front and middle, voice-activated panoramic sunroof, Alexa to Home technology or remote access to the vehicle.
Space remains the same inside the cabin of the new Tata Safari, which means that the SUV continues to be a decently spacious vehicle for passengers in all three rows. Space in that third row, however, continues to come at the cost of a compromised boot storage space. But that's really expected, right?
Overall, the new Tata Safari SUV come as a very well-appointed vehicle with quite a lot of space for comfortable long trips but now, at least in the top-spec version, is significantly more premium than before.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Safety
Tata Motors has been taking the front row across different segments in the Indian passenger vehicle market over the last few years when it comes to making safe cars. While the modern Tata cars come with a wide range of safety features, they also come with robust build quality as well. The Tata Safari facelift too comes following the same strategy.
The Tata Safari comes well-equipped with a host of safety features designed to provide peace of mind to the occupants. Some of the advanced safety technologies available onboard the Tata Safari facelift include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, electronic parking brake with auto hold, rain-sensing wipers, rollover mitigation, hill hold control, 360-degree view HD camera system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and lane departure warning, front collision prevention function, blind spot detection etc. Moreover, it also gets features like ABS with EBD, Isofix child seat anchors etc.
Here are some of the key safety features onboard the Tata Safari.
2023 tata safari facelift: performance.
Here is where the updated Tata Safari SUV could have been improved so much more. But isn't. So much has already been mentioned - and experienced - about the 2.0-litre turbo diesel motor under the hood and the choice between an automatic gearbox and a six-speed manual stick. Yes, the turbocharged diesel motor could have been refined further. Yes, the grunt is still uncomfortably palpable when pushing the vehicle to its limits. But yes, the new Tata Safari - especially with the automatic transmission - is still quite a fun car to drive and has enough power to get a move on when required. The suspension continues to hold its own on rough roads and the steering still has a nice heft to aid matters.
But why this otherwise very capable model does not also come with a petrol engine under its hood is beyond the comprehension of many. Tata Motors is almost snubbing the petrol-buying audience in the country, a group that is steadily increasing. There is also no 4x4 option for the updated version of the SUV because the platform on which the new Tata Safari is based on does not allow for it. But here is also a miss, especially as this model does go up against authentic off-road options in the market as well.
2023 Tata Safari facelift: Verdict
The updated Tata Safari is a big step up in terms of its exterior design and cabin features and quality when compared to the previous model. Space has always been this car's strength but the additions to the feature list arm this SUV to the absolute teeth.
The diesel motor and the automatic transmission work extremely well in tandem but as mentioned previously, Tata Motors ought to strongly consider a petrol option for the model as well, especially considering the number of buyers favouring the petrol engines are increasing across India over the last few years

Unlike previous Safaris, which used ladder-frame chassis and traditional, rear-biased 4x4, the new one uses Land Rover's D8 platform (OmegaArc in Tata parlance) and is front-wheel-drive only. It's powered by a 170hp FCA-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engine, which can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.

Tata Safari Overview
Safari specifications & features.
Explore an in-depth overview of the Tata Safari specifications and features, offering comprehensive details on its engine choices, fuel efficiency, torque, power, transmission, dimensions, and trunk capacity. Additionally, gain insights into the car's advanced safety features and infotainment system.
What's New?
The facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari have been launched in India. The Tata Harrier facelift is priced from Rs 15.49 lakh with prices for the automatic starting from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier Dark Edition is priced from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Safari facelift's prices, meanwhile, start from Rs 16.19 lakh with the automatics and Dark Edition variants both priced from Rs 20.69 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The prices are introductory and valid for a limited period. The SUVs are priced at a premium over the outgoing models but pack in a lot more tech than before.
Starting with the exterior, both SUVs now get greater differentiation in design. Both SUVs retain the split headlamp design but now feature full-width lightbars up top with the main headlamps positioned lower down. Both SUVs also get different design bumpers with the Harrier featuring more triangular housings for the headlamps to the Safari’s more rectangular housings. The Safari also gets a silver-finished faux skid-plate element while the Harrier gets a black-finished piece. At the rear, both SUVs get revised tail lamps with a lightbar element along with redesigned bumpers.
Inside, both SUVs get a revised dashboard design with new control surfaces and more tech. Top models now feature a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, each trim level – Persona in Tata speak – gets its own unique interior trim finishes to stand out. There’s a lot to talk about by way of features as well with both SUVs packing in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, powered tailgates, panoramic sunroof with mood lights, electronic parking brake with auto hold, ventilated front seats, ventilated seats in second row (Safari), powered driver seat and more.
Tata has also revised the variant names going from the previous XE, XM, XT and XZ variants to using Smart, Pure, Adventure, Fearless and Accomplished. As with the outgoing model, Tata is offering both SUVs with the Dark Edition variants.
Expert Review on Tata Safari
- Solid Road Presence
- Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
- Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
- Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
- Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
- Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable
Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.
Tata Safari
The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.
How’s the Design?
The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.
How does it perform?
The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.
How’s the mileage?
- Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
- Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl
How’s the driving experience?
The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.
What’s the interior like?
The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.
Tech and infotainment
The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.
Safety equipment
The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.
Which variant to buy?
You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.
Which cars compete in the segment?
The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.
Verdict (Value for Money)
The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

The ex-showroom prices of the 2024 Safari start from ₹16.19 lakh for the Smart variant with the 2.0L turbo diesel engine and 6-speed MT. The range tops out at ₹27.34 lakh (ex-showroom) with the Accomplished Plus Dark 6 Seater variant, which gets 2.0L turbo diesel engine with 6-speed TC. Here are the variant-wise prices below:
Dimensions of Tata Safari
The 2024 Safari is 4668mm long, 1922mm wide and 1795mm tall. Bigger exterior dimensions give a car a stronger road presence. The Safari has a 2741mm long wheelbase. A long wheelbase makes the car more stable at high speeds and gives better legroom in the back seat, while a shorter wheelbase makes the car more agile. The 2024 Tata Safari has a fuel tank capacity of 50 litres and a boot space measuring 420 litres. The Safari has a ground clearance of 200mm. The tyre size of the 2024 Safari base model is 235/65 R17 and the top model rides on 245/55 R19 tyres. Cars running on bigger wheels provide better handling and styling. However, these advantages come at the cost of efficiency. Having bigger wheels means more metal and more rotating mass. Therefore, it adversely impacts your drivability, performance and mileage.
Tata Safari Engine Specs
The Tata Safari only gets a 2.0L turbo diesel engine, which is available with a 6-speed MT and a 6-speed TC transmission. The Safari turbo diesel engine makes 170PS of power at 3750rpm and 350Nm of torque between 1750 and 2500rpm.

Tesla sales drop as competition in the electric vehicle market heats up
By Khristopher J. Brooks
Edited By Anne Marie Lee
April 2, 2024 / 1:01 PM EDT / CBS News
Tesla sales fell sharply last quarter as competition in the electric vehicle market increased worldwide and price cuts the company enacted months ago failed to entice more buyers.
The Austin, Texas, company owned by Elon Musk, said Tuesday it delivered 386,810 vehicles from January through March, almost 9% below the 423,000 it sold during the same period last year. The company blamed the decline in part on phasing in an updated version of the Model 3 sedan at its Fremont, California factory. Plant shutdowns due to shipping diversions in the Red Sea, and an arson attack that knocked out power to its German factory also caused fewer deliveries, it said.
Last year, Tesla dramatically lowered prices by up to $20,000 for some models. In March, it temporarily knocked $1,000 off the Model Y, its top-selling vehicle. The reductions cut into the company's profit margins, which spooked investors.
The drop in Tesla's sales marks the first time its number of vehicle deliveries has fallen since 2020, the Wall Street Journal reported . The company's poor performance last quarter "was an unmitigated disaster that is hard to explain away," Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said Tuesday.
In its letter to investors in January, Tesla predicted "notably lower" sales growth this year. The company added that it's between two big growth waves — one from global expansion of the Models 3 and Y; and one from the Model 2, a new smaller and less expensive vehicle.
"For Musk, this is a fork-in-the-road time to get Tesla through this turbulent period, otherwise troubling days could be ahead," Ives said. "With the ongoing debacle around margins, production and ongoing macro events, Musk will need to quickly take the reins back in to regain confidence in the eyes of Wall Street with a big few quarters ahead."
Automakers around the globe have indeed rolled out EVs aimed at competing with the likes of Tesla's Model Y and Cybertruck. As more Americans grow curious about owning EVs , companies like Ford and General Motors are investing billions of dollars to produce vehicles that are less expensive than Tesla cars. Between 2018 and 2020, Tesla accounted for 80% of EV sales in the U.S., but that figure fell to 55% in 2023, according to Cox Automotive.
A record 1.2 million EVs were sold in the U.S. last year, according to Cox data. A semiconductor chip shortage three years ago kept some major automakers from running their EV factories at full capacity, but those woes have dissipated and companies are starting to rev up production, auto experts said.
During the quarter, Tesla lost production time in Germany after what is suspected to have been an arson attack cut its power supply. U.S. production was slowed by an upgrade to the Model 3, and Ives estimated that Tesla's China sales slid 3% to 4% during the period.
Deliveries of the Models 3 and Y, which are by far Tesla's top sellers, fell 10.3% year over year to 369,783. Sales of the company's other models, the X and S and the new Cybertruck, rose almost 60% to 17,027. Tesla produced 10% more vehicles than it sold during the first quarter.

Tesla is offering steep discounts on its Model Y SUV as it tries to clear out inventory
- Tesla is offering big discounts on its Model Y SUV .
- Elon Musk's EV maker is marking down Model Y prices by $7,500 in some cases.
- In Q1, the company produced more than 46,000 more cars than it delivered.
Tesla is cutting the prices of its Model Y as it faces a broader sales problem .
Elon Musk's electric carmaker is marking down prices of the SUV by upwards of $7,500 in some cases as it tries to clear out inventory.
Tesla's website shows discount amounts varying across the different versions of the SUV and across individual vehicles of any one version.

Here's a sampling of some price markdowns: Some Model Y Performance All-Wheel Drive vehicles are now priced at $49,040, down from $54,490. Some price cuts put Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive cars at $44,990, down from $49,990. Some Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive SUVs now show a $39,470 price tag, down from $46,990.
Tesla's latest quarterly report , meanwhile, doesn't look promising.
In Q1, the company produced 433,371 vehicles but delivered just 386,810. The deliveries were far fewer than Wall Street analysts expected , representing a drop of about 20% from the prior quarter and 8% from the same time last year.
It's also the first time since 2020 that Tesla has seen a year-over-year drop in quarterly deliveries.
In a press release Tuesday, Tesla attributed the drop in delivery volume to its production ramp for its updated Model 3 , an arson attack at its Berlin Gigafactory , and supply chain issues from the Red Sea conflict . Softening demand may also be a problem for Tesla, as it is for many other EV makers.
Tesla shares were down more than 5% following its quarterly report and have fallen about 30% over the past year.

Tesla slashed Model Y prices to clear its inventory backlog
D espite being the top EV seller in the U.S., Tesla had a somewhat rocky first quarter of 2024, building significantly more vehicles than it delivered. While some analysts’ predictions that Tesla could “go bust” sound overblown, the automaker is in recovery mode, offering deeper discounts to move unsold inventory.
Tesla’s first-quarter sales dipped by 8.5% worldwide in the first quarter. In response, the company is offering notable discounts on the popular Model Y crossover . The cuts are large enough to make it temptingly affordable after federal tax credits, which apply to all Model Y variants in 2024.
Sawyer Merritt, a notable Tesla social media personality, posted about the discounts on X/Twitter earlier this month, listing prices for existing Model Y inventory . After the $7,500 credit, the Model Y RWD starts at $33,890, the Long Range at $37,490, and the range-topping Model Y Performance at $40,690.
It’s possible to significantly drive up those prices with Tesla’s advanced driver aid features, but Merritt noted that buyers could get three months of a Full Self-Driving subscription using his referral link.
Tesla cited the new Model 3 ’s production increase as part of its overage, saying that downtime to convert the factory for the new car played a role. The automaker also saw a shutdown at its German factory, though some aren’t so sure of the company’s excuses.
Regardless of the cause, the price cuts make the Model Y one of the most affordable EVs on sale today, which could further solidify its position as the best-selling electric vehicle in the world. Even so, demand for EVs is not on the hockey-stick upward trend that many had hoped for. The situation has led some legacy automakers, including Ford and GM , to backtrack a bit and lean more into hybrids and plug-in hybrids to bridge the gap.

Resurrecting Moskvitch Won’t Be Easy for Russia
Renault's relinquished Moscow plant could relaunch a dormant brand, along with promised EVs, but development will be a challenge in uncertain times.
- Renault has transferred its plant in Moscow and its stake to the government of the city, while also giving up its stake in AvtoVAZ to the NAMI institute.
- The Moscow city government has revealed a plan to relaunch the Moskvitch brand at the Renault plant in Moscow, located on the former site of the AZLK plant that produced Moskvitch vehicles for decades.
- The plan faces serious challenges as the country's auto industry has been largely cut off from western European investment and technology.
"The first stage will be the production of internal combustion engined cars, and then potentially electric cars," Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement.
Sobyanin did not indicate whether the gas-engined models or EVs would be developed within the country or produced under license, raising quite a few questions about the feasibility of the project. The mayor did indicate that the KamAZ truck plant, which produces trucks and buses in Naberezhnye Chelny, several hundred miles east of Moscow, would serve as the main engineering partner for the Moskvitch plant. In addition to heavy trucks, KamAZ produces electric city buses.
The Moscow-based AZLK plant—for decades one of the main passenger car production factories in the USSR—was known for its Moskvitch sedans and station wagons at home and in many export markets. The plant, located on Volgogradsky Prospekt in Moscow's southeast, had seen some tough times in the 1990s when a five-door hatchback named the Moskvitch 2141 that was launched in the mid 1980s effectively became the last available platform, spawning a number of sedans and coupes built in small numbers. The factory had effectively come to a standstill in early 2000s as the country struggled to recover from the financial crisis of 1998, and was eventually absorbed into Renault's operations years later, producing the inexpensive Logan range of small cars.
"This has been a very unexpected development, first of all, but with the city administration having gotten the plant once again for the first time since the 1990s, something has to be produced there," Yaroslav V., an eastern European auto historian told Autoweek . "The big question is where they're going to get the tooling for gas and electric cars at this point, and almost everything really points to China. The Moskvitch factory would have difficulties getting a whole assembly line from some western automaker, while China has plenty of automakers and EVs in production. So they can sell designs and assembly lines."
"The other option is more AvtoVAZ models under the Moskvitch brand with some exterior differences, but that would probably cause oversupply of current models. That would be a simple solution, and perhaps something that will also end up happening."
Industry observers in Russia have speculated that the plant won't be able to keep Renault production going even if it wanted to, due to the need to source components from Renault, effectively closing the door to existing platforms produced at the plant. Auto industry watchers have also noted that funding for a plant retrofit to restart car production would be difficult in the near term, given that car sales in Russia have fallen over 70% since the start of the war in Ukraine.
"I don't see them doing something quickly with the Moskvitch project, given where car sales and priorities are right now," Yaroslav adds. "But with the upcoming end of imports of some western brands, demand for domestic models will have to return to levels unseen for decades because Russia will now have to build a lot of its own cars instead of importing them. With the current political situation and the pullout of several automakers, the domestic car industry is going to have to grow really fast in the coming years to keep up with demand. But mostly, I believe this will be a boon for Chinese brands that will want to take advantage of export opportunities."
European auto industry observers are also noting that amid the confident announcements from the city government, if bringing back Moskvitch was so easy, why wasn't it done years ago when economic conditions were much more favorable? Now the new owners of the plant face a much bleaker supply chain environment and perhaps tighter budgets, even when it comes to putting internal combustion models into production. The only upside the project faces is the fact that competition from imported models is likely to be much weaker in the coming years, as there won't be as many foreign brands left on the market.

Jay Ramey grew up around very strange European cars, and instead of seeking out something reliable and comfortable for his own personal use he has been drawn to the more adventurous side of the dependability spectrum. Despite being followed around by French cars for the past decade, he has somehow been able to avoid Citroën ownership, judging them too commonplace, and is currently looking at cars from the former Czechoslovakia.
