Remembering Perth's wildly popular African safari park, where lions stalked the family car
"Trespassers will be eaten."
It was the first of many grisly greetings for visitors to Bullen's African Lion Safari in the 1970s and 1980s.
More than 30 lions and cubs once roamed the open-range zoo in the outer-Perth suburb of Wanneroo which was established in 1971 as a refuge for displaced circus lions.
Wanneroo Museum historian Susan Dalgleish said the park tried to replicate an authentic African safari experience.
"You could sit in your car and the animals would come to you," she said.
"You'd have them coming right up getting on your bonnet, getting on the roof, and you're right there and you've got a lion or lioness actually right there outside your window.
"Anything that was an appendage on the car was open slather for the lions to take a bite off.
"Windscreen wipers were a favourite thing — they did go for tyres as well."
Taking lions by the tail
Ms Dalgleish said the lions were well cared for by staff and would eat at least two kilograms of meat every day.
"For all intents and purposes, the lions actually had quite a good life, albeit they were there on display but in a bigger area than just being in a circus."
In an oral history interview with the museum, the now-deceased park manager John Gilbertson admitted he had no background in caring for exotic animals before accepting the job.
"The only background I had was a domestic cat and dog at home, but when the lion park was being built I approached [park owners] Stafford and Ken Bullen and I was told to start the next day."
Mr Gilberton said many of the lions were tame.
"If you were working in the night quarters, Ferocious the lion would come and lay down alongside you and that's where he'd stay," he said.
"You had to get him by the tail and drag him out of the way."
Escaped lioness folklore
In the mid 1980s, police investigated reports of a lioness wandering through scrubland near the park.
A teenager claimed he had to stop his car on Wanneroo Road to avoid hitting the animal while it crossed the road.
Park coordinator Greg Bullen told a local newspaper at the time the large barbed-wire fences surrounding the park meant there was no chance of a lion escaping.
"A press release was issued by the park to say 'it's not one of ours, none of our lions have escaped', but that didn't actually solve where the lion came from," Ms Dalgleish said.
"So there's still all of this folklore about the lion that never was or was there ever a sighting?"
Tippi Hedren spells the end of safari
The beginning of the end for the park came in 1981 when American actress Tippi Hedren visited and told local media she was appalled at the conditions in which the lions were kept.
Then in 1982, a man stepped out of his car and walked into the lion compound wearing religious medallions and holding a cross — he was mauled to death by a pack of lions awaiting their mid-morning feed.
"You can't stop people from doing silly things," Mr Gilbertson said in his interview.
The park closed in 1988, with management citing the high cost of animal feed, expensive public liability insurance and opposition from animal rights activists.
"Even though the lions were not being mistreated, the tide was turning for that sort of a thing," Ms Dalgleish said.
The remaining lions were shot and killed. Management said it was too difficult to re-home the animals as they would not integrate with other prides.
It was the first and only time Western Australia had an open-range zoo.
In the lead-up to the 2017 state election, then-premier Colin Barnett pledged to establish an open-range zoo in the Perth hills, but the plans were scrapped after his government was defeated.

Find out about our team, the people who make the difference
Tourism is in my DNA. I was born in Nairobi, Kenya as was my father Tom Fernandes, who established a safari company servicing guests from all over the globe. I worked in the office every school holidays, mostly all the mundane jobs. I was sent to boarding school in Perth, Australia where I attended Aquinas College, the great Christian Brothers institution, then to Curtin University, graduating with a business degree and joining a big accounting firm.
After two years of “tick and bash”, I went “walkabout” around the U.S.A. and ended up in northern California, where I was asked to establish a “safari desk” within a large travel agency. Six months later I went solo and established Wildlife Safari, a luxury outbound operator selling East Africa and serviced, by our family business.
From a one man band, Wildlife Safari grew into an outstanding business and expanded into the U.K. and Australia, but after 25 years, I decided to consolidate the sales and reservations activity into the Australia office. I moved back to Perth in 1996, where I enjoy being in one of the most liveable cities in the world and Wildlife Safari now sells luxury travel to Africa, India and the islands of the Indian Ocean. We still maintain our head office in Nairobi, Kenya with an experienced team of safari specialists.
I met Peter Askin during the late 80’s while living in California and we conducted joint sales activities promoting our respective destinations through the country. Peter contacted me in 2003 with a proposal to invest in Southern World Australia which was undergoing a change of ownership and I bought 50% of Southern World Australia, with David Armour, Peter Askin and Martin Horgan as my partners.
Richard Peate, a Southern World original founder, retired in 2013 and the subsequent Southern World New Zealand restructure resulted in my acquiring 50% of this business with David, Peter, Martin and Tim Reid as my partners.
My role as Group Chairman is more “bigger picture” than day to day, while providing support and advice as required, particularly in the accounting, taxation and legal areas. Having the Wildlife Safari group as a related entity also lends a global view to both businesses.
Southern World and Wildlife Safari reflect many of the same ethos, guests are always first, we deliver a unique experience at excellent value, with service, service, service as a mantra.
Living in the great state of Western Australia, I’m also very passionate to promote my state under the Southern World brand, and with the launch of nonstop Qantas flights from London to Perth in 2018, I plan to get out from behind my desk and sell the wonders of Western Australia with luxury and style, of course.

Some tours can be run with as few as one person, but the maximum size tends to be around 10-15 people, plus your driver and your guide. There are tours that focus solely on the safari experience, or you can look at a tour that incorporates a few days on safari along with other holiday highlights. Tours can either be accommodated, or you can choose a tour where you camp. It is important that you understand fully before you confirm your booking the sort of tour that you are going on, as some tours will cater more for the ‘sedate’ holiday-maker; others are more geared towards the ‘adventurous/action seeker’ holiday-maker. The SAFARI Research Group is led by Professor Onur Mutlu . We are part of the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) at ETH Zurich .
Our group conducts cutting-edge research and education in computer architecture, computing systems, hardware security, bioinformatics, and software/hardware co-design. The major goal is to design fundamentally better computing architectures. Our work spans the boundaries between applications, systems, languages, system software, compilers, and hardware, with architecture at the core. We tackle many fundamental issues in high performance, energy efficiency, hardware security, fault tolerance, predictable systems, dependable systems, hardware/software cooperation, and genome analysis. We are especially excited about novel, fundamentally-secure and fundamentally-efficient computation, communication and memory/storage paradigms. Recent impactful examples of the group’s work include leading research into memory/storage systems and new computing paradigms, e.g., the discovery of the DRAM RowHammer vulnerability and the development of a comprehensive Processing-in-Memory paradigm.
